ALMI NEWS / SUMMER 2013

“The time of perfect young summer, the fulfillment of the promise of the earlier months, and with as yet no sign to remind one that its fresh young beauty will ever fade.” ― Gertrude Jekyll

Hello, Summer. Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language; so said Henry James. And, Henry, we agree! So, how do you spend the glorious, fleeting days of summer? We recently read a note from Elle Decor’s Editor in Chief regarding “summer escapes” and the multitude of marvelous places people escape to feel relaxed and rejuvenated. For us -- and yes, we are biased -there is nothing sweeter than escaping to your own backyard. In celebration of the season and your very own “yardcation,” we focus this issue on the joys of summer with features on gardening with summer berries, creating an inviting outdoor living space using pottery and our favorite garden-related market finds. Additionally, we highlight an amazing project in Santa Ynez Wine Country we completed last summer that just won the California Landscape Contractor’s Association Sweepstakes Award for Best Overall Project. We hope you enjoy the summer issue of our Addison Landscape E-Zine and that it inspires you to enjoy your own “yardcation.” Tyler and Alli Addison, Owners Addison Landscape, Inc

In designing your kid-friendly edible garden, reserve a spot for berries—blueberries, strawberries and raspberries.

Blueberries. The ultimate super berry. Kids love their super taste. Parents love their super nutrition. But please note, these are not your “just plant them and they will grow” edibles. They require some careful prep prior to planting. Blueberries thrive in cooler climates and very acidic soils (pH of 4.5–5.5), something that does not occur naturally here on the Central Coast. Luckily for us blueberrylovin’-growyour-own advocatin’ types, there are many varieties that are better adapted to warmer and/or coastal climates (consider a warmer-climate loving and compact southern high-bush variety, like “Sunshine Blue”). Because our native soil is not conducive to blueberry producing, we recommend container growing for complete soil control. A mixture of peat moss, acidic potting soil, soil-sulfur and bark can provide your blueberry bushes with just the nutrition they need to turn out the blueberries you desire. Place your blueberries in full sun, provide them with a consistent water supply and watch out for the birds—they enjoy the berries just as much as we do. Tell the kiddies that the blueberries (like many fruits) will be ready to harvest when the berries practically fall off into their hands. And the darker the berry, the sweeter the taste. Raspberries. Easy to grow, rich in vitamins A and C and downright delicious. The first step in growing these delicate and delicious berries is to choose your berry. And really, this will be quite easy as there are two distinct types: summer-bearing (one large annual crop) and everbearing (two crops, one in the summer and one in the fall). Plant your berries in late winter or early spring, three feet apart and in rows eight feet apart in full sun. Raspberries can be grown as shrubs, but are easier for kids to harvest and tend to when the canes are trained on a Tbar trellis or hedgerow. Raspberries like well-draining soil and do not appreciate being watered from above— so irrigate them using a soaker hose, positioned near the canes.

“RUSTIC ELEGANCE

R

ustic elegance best describes the expansive landscape of this newly constructed residence in Santa Ynez Wine Country. Combining features like the cutting and rose garden (many of which were transplants from the homeowners previous estate), a micro orchard, raised edible garden beds, and stunning landscaped areas surrounding the main residence, guest quarters and pool house, this landscape is ideally suited for outdoor entertaining.

Additional features of the landscape include interlocking concrete pavers and edger by Belgard Hardscapes (Mega Lafitt and Anglia Edger in Toscana) and a rare Santa Barbara sandstone harvested after the Montecito Tea Fire in 2008 (stone has a distinct cooked character) used throughout property and in dry-stack retaining walls.

Deeply ingrained in the local wine community, the owners’ vision for the property was to infuse comfort and relaxation. Much like wine, this landscape demonstrates a graceful way of living.

OUTDOOR LIVING

OUR IN-HOUSE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR DESIGN EXPERT ALLI ADDISON ON ADDING STYLE AND INTEREST WITH CONTAINER PLANTINGS.

L

ooking for a quick, simple and cost effective way to add major style and interest to your outdoor living space? Consider container plantings. From formal to relaxed, traditional to contemporary, there is an arrangement to suit your needs. And your container choices are endless. Here we round-up our favorites and discuss tips for planting and arranging with style: Go for formal and structured. The deep, glossy green leaves of a boxwood topiary planted in a large container is a stately choice for any outdoor living space. Consider pairing these arrangements on either side of a door or walkway. Let the plants be the star. Select containers that are neutral in color (think whites, greys and taupes). This will allow your plantings to pop and create a strong focal point.

28

addisonlandscape.com

Get Colorful. Or on the flip side, arrange a collection of colorful containers in varying hues and plant them all to similar plants. Mass plantings and consistency. If you are looking to make a big statement, purchase a large quantity of the same containers and select the exact same plant to be placed in each. You can arrange these around the exterior of your home or mass them together in a courtyard. Consider citrus. Containers filled with navel oranges, mexican limes and dwarf Meyer Lemons are a classic choice that look beautiful and smell beautiful in an outdoor living space. Plant them in a traditional Versailles planter for a formal approach, or consider a clean-lined cast concrete container for a modern twist. We suggest placing container citrus plantings in a courtyard space -- the smaller the space, the stronger the fragrance.

Channel your inner farmer. Herbs and select veggies do well in container plantings, and are especially suited if you are tight on space for a standard-sized edible garden. In fact, certain herbs are actually recommended for container plantings because of their overbearing nature, such as cilantro and mint. Line a path. Make a statement by lining a path way or drive with container plantings. Consider lower-lying trough containers. They will help to “lengthen” the pathway.

Liberty White Gloss 23”W x 21.5”H, from $294. arizonapottery.com

Beyond the patio. Yes, container plantings look great on a patio, but don’t be afraid to incorporate them into your landscape as well. Imagine a bright yellow container planted to a selection of succulents placed in an area of native grasses. The juxtaposition of the modern container and the relaxed landscape would add major interest to your yard.

ALMI

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP A series of succulents and agave is elevated with

rustic appeal thanks to a unique and weathered container. Three colorful containers overlook a landscape and the fairway at a Trilogy home in Nipomo. A muted green container is placed against a brick column, helping to elongate the garage door area and extend the color palette across the front facade of the house.
