FIELD TRIPPIN’ IN LOTUSLAND TAKE A SEAT IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS ALMI NEWS / SPRING 2013
“In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt.” ― Margaret Atwood
welcome
spring Spring has the x-factor -- that unique, unexplainable ability -- to instill a sense of innocence and newness, to beckon us outdoors, to encourage us to cleanse ourselves, our homes, our yards, to start fresh. It is a season of discovery, and rediscovery. We re-familiarize ourselves with our gardens; we teach our children how to tend and care for the earth and its creatures. We celebrate the sun. The rain. The fresh air. The new growth. In this issue, we focus on the elements that give the Spring its special ability. From local home-related events, to a feature from a favorite local publication -Edible SLO -- on gardening with and for children. We then embark on a field trip to Montecito to explore the wild and wonderful botanical world of Madame Ganna Walska and her famed Lotusland. And we end with a round-up on outdoor living and the best of outdoor furniture. We hope you enjoy the spring issue of our Addison Landscape E-Zine and that it inspires you to enjoy your own great outdoors. Tyler and Alli Addison, Owners Addison Landscape, Inc

The kid-friendly edible garden from EDIBLE SLO Spring 2013
Written by Alli Addison Photography by Amber Wighton Originally featured in Edible SLO
DIRT is downright FASCINATING!
as featured in edible slo spring 2013 Our marriage began as many young marriages do in the kitchen
-- with one too many improperly-prepared, overcooked, flavorlacking meals. Luckily for us, and our appetites, things did improve over time. Soon after we said “I do,” I began a career that left me immersed in the local wine and food culture. I was the ultimate sponge. Soaking up every piece of information and technique available, and like every Cal Poly alum, learning by doing. Before long, I was testing my new-found culinary skills on my landscape contractor husband and several other guinea-pig family members. The combination of the inspired, yet mildly-talented cooking bride with the inspired, and seriously-talented landscaping husband, inevitably resulted in the planting of our first edible garden. Thanks to some careful planning on the husband’s part, throughout the seasons, we were guaranteed the essentials: herbs, squash and melons, peppers, various lettuces, tomatoes, strawberries, corn, and carrots. Life was good, simple, delicious. But oh, how things change when a child enters your life. Upon discovering our family of two (plus two dogs) would soon grow to a family of five, I found myself crusading for the locavore cause, and later the “backyardavore” cause. In fact, it became my new mission in life, a revolution if you will, to provide our child with fresh, healthy, know-where-it-came-from goods. He entered life 100% pure, and we were determined to keep him that way. But how could we foster these same passions in our child? A passion for food, cultivation and the environment? Enter in the kid-friendly edible garden. The answer to our worries. The ability to work alongside our boy, provide our family with home-grown meals, and bestow a sense of responsibility. Kinda like having a puppy, but instead it’s a Bull’s Blood Beet. So, where to begin?

A VISUAL JOURNEY TO THE FAR ENDS OF THE BOTANICAL EARTH IN MONTECITO, CALIFORNIA Produced by Alli Addison Photography by Alli Addison
“Time and circumstances permitting, I dream that if given the opportunity, having considerable finances at my disposal, I might fulfill my work to develop Lotusland to its maximum capacity as the most outstanding center of horticultural significance and educational use. - Madame Ganna Walska

Transport yourself to another world, filled with botanical wonders, curiosities and exuberance, nestled in the hills of Montecito, CA. A trip to Lotusland steps you into the mind of 19th-century opera-singer turned socialite, and later -- evolved gardenista, Madame Ganna Walska. Over 3,000 plant specimens and 18 strikingly unique gardens span 37 acres, making a tour through Lotusland a bucket-list must-see for the gardening enthusiast.
The famed and iconic “blue garden looking east towards the mountains of Montecito.
Blue-green glass slag line the planter beds and pathways in this garden. Madame Walska purchased the glass from the Arrowhead Spring Water bottling factory, which chipped it out of its kilns.

must-sees The garden is open to the public via tour Wednesdays through Saturdays, by reservation only. There are two tour times available; 10AM and 1:30PM. Make tour reservations in advance. Garden must-sees include the iconic Blue Garden, the Theatre Garden, the million dollar ancient Cycad Garden (also believed to be the most complete in the country), and the whimsical Topiary Garden. Stop by the Butterfly Garden and citrus orchards to enjoy the alluring scent that attracts so many beneficial insects. Marvel at Madame Ganna Walska’s preference in mass plantings for major impact. Unwind in the serene and traditional Japanese Garden at the end of your tour. Ask questions! The docents hold a wealth of information, not only of the gardens but it’s rich history of inhabitants.

s a native Californian and life-long Central Coaster, I can attest to a lifetime of outdoorliving enjoyment. Our climate is made for, if not begging for, homeowners to get outside, enjoy their unique exterior spaces and relax. Thank goodness it is – or else Addison Landscape would be hard-pressed to find work! But a revolution is occurring, within and beyond the little slice of heaven that we call home. Outdoorliving, and the concept of bringing the indoors out, is sweeping the nation, and the design world. Long-gone are the days of unsightly, uncomfortable and un-stylish outdoor furniture. Over the decades,

simplistic patio furniture has matured into a blend of elegance and function, style and comfort. Outdoor furniture designers are turning out spectacular, indoor-worthy pieces. And acclaimed interior furniture design houses are shifting their focus and designing incredibly beautiful and durable lines of outdoor furniture. The choices are endless, the prices arrayed, and the accessibility better than ever. We always suggest starting with a single piece. A single piece of outdoor furniture, much like artwork, can transform a space, provide inspiration, and sometimes be the single statement making addition to your outdoor living space.
