Witness an underwater phenomenon without getting wet!

This wonderful world never stops surprising us. Who knew that there was a yearly migration of giant cuttlefish just off the coast of Whyalla?

Every year between May and August, the Whyalla waters become home to the mating rituals of tens of thousands of these giant sea creatures — a sight that divers from all over the world come to see for themselves, including film crews for National Geographic and David Attenborough!

If you’re not a diver, you might be wondering how you can witness this spectacular scene for yourself. Enter Cutty’s Tours, run by Matt Waller in his glass bottom boat! He’ll save you from climbing into the freezing cold winter waters while still giving you an incredible platform to view these bizarre creatures.

“Whyalla is the only place in the world known for the aggregation of these giant

cuttlefish. It used to be an area that was fished, but now, it’s protected so that divers can explore the shallow granite reef and see the strange mating rituals firsthand. We wanted as many people as possible to share in this unique experience, so we created the glass bottom boat experience,” says Matt.

Operating just 20 to 30 metres offshore in shallow water, these 45-minute boat tours allow you to see the happenings of the sea through the glass base of the boat, with Matt (a fourth generation fisherman) providing insight along the way.

“The male cuttlefish can get up to a metre long and look prehistoric in a way. They have a really interesting courting process where you can see them changing the colour and texture of their skin and strobing patterns to attract a mate. It’s a pretty incredible thing to witness — they’re often referred to as the chameleons of the sea.”

During the mating and spawning season, tours run every hour on the hour from 10am to 1pm to get the best light of the day (when the weather is fair), and hours are extended over long

IT’S PRETTY SPECIAL TO THINK THAT WE HAVE A WORLDWIDE ATTRACTION SITTING RIGHT HERE IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA’S BACKYARD.

weekends and school holidays. It’s the perfect adventure for tour groups and school groups, as well as campers and travellers passing through the area.

While accessible to most people, the tour includes a short walk down the stony beach to reach the boat, but if you have any concerns, just call Matt to chat about your options.

It’s pretty special to think that we have a worldwide attraction sitting right here in South Australia’s backyard. How lucky are we?

Tucked on 28 hectares of working vineyards managed by the FABAL team, this venue puts you in prime position to explore the Barossa’s heritage, incredible wineries and eateries — not that you’ll want to leave this little bit of heaven!

As players in the global wine industry, the three families who co-own the property know what makes an unforgettable experience. Choose from one of three private suites, or for an unforgettable getaway with loved ones, book out the homestead, which comfortably sleeps up to 12 people across three suites, each with its own ensuite.

• The Indelicato Suite – With three bedrooms and two bathrooms, sleeping up to six guests, a stay in this inviting suite will have you opening up French doors onto a

deck that overlooks the vineyard in the warmer months, and curled up by the huge fireplace indoors in cooler times.

• The Chizen Suite – Two luxurious bedrooms, two bathrooms and plenty of good times are on offer.

• The Day Suite – Grab your lover or someone special for a ridiculously romantic spot to unwind in luxury.

You’ll slip easily into a maxo relaxo state with the complimentary wine and handmade choccies on arrival, then sample from the vinos made on the property while perched on the deck overlooking the vineyard.

When you nab the whole property, the original cellar under the house makes for an exciting dinner party spot, and upon request, you can get in a chef to whip up a Barossa feast in any of the indoor or outdoor kitchens or turn your own hand to cooking up a storm.

If you’re after a game-changing idea for your little one’s birthday party, check out the Barossa Valley Chocolate Company, where the kids make their own freckles and feast on lunch and freshly made gelati. It’s a sure-fire winner!

Go for the vino, the chocolate, the gelati, the combo or all of the above — your tastebuds, your kids and your friends will thank you for it!

City staycay

WORDS Felicity Allan

We adore our fine city of Adelaide, and we love being tourists in our own town.

There’s nothing better than spending a night or two in the city to really soak it all in. Whether it’s a special occasion, a mid-week rendezvous, a girls’ night out or a romantic weekend, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to city hotels.

We road-tested four of the hottest spots for an overnight fling in town, and here’s what we found…

Crowne Plaza Adelaide

CrownePlazaAdelaide

Oh my, what a view! Perched high above Frome Street, with views for days across the city and the Adelaide Hills, is the Crowne Plaza Adelaide. The hotel rooms are modern and well-equipped — and the higher up you stay, the better the view! But no matter which room you stay in, every guest can take in the scenery from the stunning floor to ceiling windows on the tenth floor where you’ll find Luna10, Adelaide’s highest poolside bar and cocktail lounge. When the weather is fine, the pool deck is the place to be seen — but as winter approaches, you can cosy up on a plush couch in the cocktail lounge, with a martini in hand instead. And when your belly starts to rumble, step into Koomo, an Asian fusion restaurant with an Art Deco design and a view like no other.

@crowneplazaadelaide

HotelMOTEL Adelaide

Did someone say party time?

We all like a big night out on the town every now and then, but taking taxis to and from the city can be painful… which makes it the perfect opportunity to book a little overnighter at HotelMOTEL Adelaide instead!

This property is a modern twist on the retro-style motel and offers comfortable, stylish accommodation on South Terrace. The rooms are decked out in matte black with navy and terracotta accents, and have all the creature comforts you need after a big night on the town, like plush beds, private ensuites, aircon and large smart TVs. Oh, and with free parking right on your doorstep, you can drive on up and boogie on down. This place is screaming “girls’ weekend” and we’re here for it!

THERE’S REALLY NO NEED TO LEAVE THE HOTEL!

Hilton Adelaide

One destination — that pretty much sums up the Hilton Adelaide. If you’re looking for one spot to eat, sleep, relax and explore, we’ve found it! The Hilton is perfectly located overlooking Victoria Square, with Chinatown and Adelaide Central Market just a short stroll away. The rooms are spacious, and the food and beverage options are aplenty. Coal Cellar + Grill plates up some of the best steak

and seafood in town, The Wine Cellar houses over 2,000 wines to tantalise your tastebuds, and The Collins Bar is our fave spot for a cheeky cocktail or two. When you’ve had your fill, you can head to the state-of-the-art gym to work it all off. See? There’s really no need to leave the hotel!

The Playford

Lovebirds, listen up… this newly renovated gem in the heart of the city is the perfect spot for a couple’s getaway. The Art Nouveau styling throughout the entire hotel gives you the feeling that you could be somewhere in Europe, rather than right on North Terrace.

Dial up the romance in their luxe, New York style loft suites and gaze lovingly at your significant other across the table in the new Luma Restaurant and Bar. The restaurant recently opened to rave reviews and has already been awarded a Chef Hat by the Australian Good Food Guide. When you wake feeling all loved up, be sure to pop downstairs for something sweet from the pastry cabinet at Luma, made fresh by their pastry chef on site every day. LOVE!

Our BFGs

Us South Australians are in luck this winter, with three of the best vantage points for watching Southern Right Whales migrate to warmer waters!

Depending on where you live and how personal you want your whale watching adventure to be, you’re spoilt for choice. If it’s on your bucket list, you can get up close and personal with these magical giants every year from June to October — and better yet, you can see their calves tagging alongside Mum, too. The best spots to see all the action and take pictures are the Eyre Peninsula, Kangaroo Island and the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Here are just some of your worldclass whale watching options…

Eyre Peninsula

For five months of every year, Southern Right Whales take up residence within a 15-kilometre stretch of South Australian coastline at Head of Bight. Land-based

whale watchers will find a comfortable position along the cliffs or dedicated viewing areas at this premium whale watching location, complete with wheelchair access.

From the boardwalk, you won’t just see the upper 10 percent of whale sticking above the surface — iceberg style — you’ll see the whole ball of wax! You’ll also see lots of playful activity; with mums and bubs lopping, diving, spy hopping and even performing slow-motion somersaults. And if you listen carefully, you might even hear them “chatting” to each other as they swim around the bay.

Best way to see them

One of the most unique whale watching experiences in Australia would have to be kayaking around Fowlers Bay at

.

sunrise or sunset. It’s only a 90-minute flight from Adelaide to Ceduna, and from there, EP Cruises take you the rest of the way to Fowlers Bay for this once-in-alifetime experience.

If you have more than a day set for your adventure, dial it up a notch with a three-day extravaganza for up to 11 people with Untamed Escapes. Departing from Adelaide, you’ll fly into Ceduna, en route to your two-hour sea cruise with some very large special guests. On day two, the tour travels along the famous Bunda Cliffs.

- 10

And this is your golden opportunity to take to the skies and see these beautiful creatures from above, with Chinta Air Tour options ranging from 20 minutes, up to a full hour. Then on day three, enjoy the freshest oysters you’ll ever eat, plucked straight out of the briny at Smoky Bay.

The granddaddy of Eyre Peninsula whale watching adventures is with Australian Coastal Safaris — over five days, you’ll cover Fowlers Bay, Head of Bight, Bunda Cliffs, Port Lincoln National Park, Smoky Bay, Perlubie, Streaky Bay, Point Labatt, Murphy’s Haystacks, Talia Cave and Elliston.

Fleurieu Peninsula

If you’re in Adelaide, you’re only an hour away from whales. The best time of year to take a scenic drive down the coast is June to September, when you have extremely high chances of seeing Southern Right Whales frolicking in the warmer waters around the sleepy seaside town of Victor Harbor.

Some of the best viewing spots are Encounter Bay, The Bluff and Middleton Bay. If you’re feeling really fit, follow the cobblestone path from Horseshoe Bay in Port Elliot, round Lady’s Beach, Rocky Bay, Green Bay and finish at Knights Beach. At this point, Freemans Lookout becomes your natural amphitheatre for whale watching.

If you haven’t had your whale fix by then, or it’s just too cold for the kiddos, you can always learn everything you need to know at the South Australian Whale Centre — a hands-on interactive display, packed with information and tips from local whale watching experts.

Best way to see them

If you’re serious about seeing the whales up close, why not book a 90-minute Southern Ocean Adventure Tour with Big Duck Boat Tours departing from the iconic Granite Island Causeway? You’ll be able to cram as many Southern Right Whales, New Zealand Fur Seals, Australian Sea Lions and both Common and Bottlenose Dolphins as your memory card can handle, but remember to take a jacket because it gets blowy around these parts!

Kangaroo Island

The waters surrounding KI are packed with wildlife, yearround. But it’s May through to October when you can see 90-tonne gentle giants on their annual migration. For the ‘landlubbers’, there are endless options to see the whales from the island, with preferred spectator spots in Penneshaw and Kingscote. And for the ‘seadogs’, you can visit them on their level, out on the water.

Best way to see them

Aboard Kangaroo Island Ocean Safari, take a 75-minute coastal and wildlife tour, visiting Dolphin Cove, Kangaroo Head and Snapper Point, as whales, dolphins, seals and seabirds entertain you from the comfort of the Gemini Waverider.

South Australians have plenty of whale watching options. Simply work out where you’d like to meet these BFGs and how many days you need to take in all the magic.

As the Riverland’s number one fans, it’s our job to remind you why, despite recent floods, the region is a fabulous holiday destination for the whole family.

Here are a bunch of places to see, things to do and sips to be had in South Australia’s Riverland…

23rd Street Distillery

It’s the spirit of Renmark and a must-visit for any gin, whisky, brandy or vodka lover.

The super stylish 23rd Street Distillery has a passion for crafting award-winning, premium spirits using some of the state’s most unique botanicals.

Not only can you have sips and giggles while blending your own gin in their massive state-of-the-art venue, you can also take a history tour around the property. The site was built in 1914, and over the years, it’s been home to a

Set right on the riverbank in Wilkadene, this brewery attracts locals and tourists all year-round. Pet and family-friendly, the Woolshed Brewery is a walk-in venue where everyone is welcome. Bring a picnic or create your own platter with their locally made goods. And yes, the Hard Lemonades are a must… for adults only!

Your guide to Whyalla

WORDS Millie Looker

Whyalla is all shades of wonderful — here’s where to start.

Just four hours from Adelaide along the coast of the Eyre Peninsula, you’ll find Whyalla. If you’re picturing a sleepy, quaint seaside town, we’ve got news! It’s the fourth most populated city in South Australia, and it’s overflowing with beautiful attractions for travellers to explore.

The naturescapes and wildlife are second to none, the locals are salt of the earth, and the beaches make it a delightful getaway destination. If you’re new to the area, here are a few great spots to explore at your leisure…

The one of a kind jetty

Part of the allure of the Whyalla foreshore is its unique circular jetty — a design that was chosen by the local community. The huge 315-metre long loop is a great place to wander and take in the beauty of the beach. Even better, the jetty has six locations for children or people with a disability to safely fish from, making it accessible to everyone.

At night, the lights in the jetty handrail create a delightful ambience and show off the jetty’s beautiful shape after dark — making it the perfect spot to wrap up a summer evening in Whyalla.

The brand new Seaview Café

There’s something about being near the ocean that gets the hunger pangs firing! The brand new Seaview Café serves up all the best beachside eats, including fish and chips, big brekkies, milkshakes, ice creams and slushies. It’s an idyllic spot to sit and take in the views, or grab your food to go and enjoy it on the sand or vast lawn areas.

If you’re just passing through, you may even make use of the super handy, solar-powered charging station right outside the Seaview Café. It’s a free and ultra handy addition to the area, and the perfect shady spot to sit with a fantastic view while you charge up your phone or get some work done on your laptop.

- 16 TRAVEL: WHYALLA
Photo: Isaac Forman. Whyalla Aboriginal Women’s Group meeting in the Whyalla Library.

With visitors heading to the foreshore as word of the wonderful Whyalla gets out, it makes perfect sense that the Visitor Pod would be placed front and centre! This new addition to the foreshore offers tourists plenty of info on the area, as well as art, keepsakes, merchandise and more.

As with most things in Whyalla, the Visitor Pod has been made with plenty of heart, using recycled and repurposed materials that were previously used to build the Adelaide 500 corporate boxes. We love an eco-conscious town!

The weekend place to be, O Kipos

O Kipos is a Whyalla gem when the weekend rolls around. During the day, you can stop in for a coffee and check out the fresh fruit market, filled with locally grown produce. When night falls, O Kipos transforms into a funky bar with live music, grilled meats and veg, and delectable tasting platters. What an all-rounder!

The history-filled library

This building may look modern from the outside, but inside, a world of local history awaits! Whyalla has such a rich

past that it’s an important stop for visitors. In the heat of summer, head into this air conditioned safe haven, grab a coffee and turn back time in the local history room. Visitors can also make use of the internet access, borrow DVDs or a book to read beachside, and even hold workshops or meetings.

Whyalla is ready to welcome visitors with open arms and show off everything it’s got to offer. What are you waiting for?

Cosy up in the Fleurieu

WORDS Millie Looker

Oh fabulous Fleurieu, how we love you so!

We jump at any opportunity we get to make the short drive to the Fleurieu Peninsula. Why? Because it’s filled to the brim with incredible dining opportunities, an emerging drinks scene, a naturally beautiful landscape and, of course, some of the best accommodation that South Australia has to offer.

With some of the best beaches in SA, it makes for a great summer holiday spot. But there’s something magical about the rugged Fleurieu coastline in winter, too. Challenge your curiosity with these six spots to cosy up this winter...

Old Chaff Mill Retreat, Sellicks Hill

The history! The charm! You’ll find this beauty in the middle of the organic shiraz vineyards, right where the foothills meet the ocean. This phenomenal building dates right back to the nineteenth century, but after being devastatingly gutted by fire 100 years ago, it’s now been reborn as an architecturally designed, luxury accommodation that celebrates its rich past. We feel fancy just looking at it!

Kings Beach Retreats, Victor Harbor

This private oasis is the perfect place to sit back, relax and take in the endless coastline views. When the hustle and bustle gets too much, book into one of three totally private retreats. Whether you’re hunting for a romantic trip for two or a blissful spot to gather 14 of your loved ones together, there are options available for everyone.

Lost Retreats, Mount Jagged

An idyllic lake on one side, sprawling vineyard views on the other — it doesn’t get much better than that! Lost Retreats is the ideal getaway for those who want to unplug and relax but still explore the Fleurieu Peninsula — and these retreats are positioned within easy reach of some of the region’s most popular restaurants, wineries and markets. Or, if it’s privacy you’re after, you can build your own picnic with local wines, cheeses, olives and other locally produced delicacies to enjoy in peace.

Lapito House, Myponga

This old stone farmhouse has had a total makeover and now sleeps up to eight guests across five bedrooms. Created by a husband and wife who saw potential in this desolate stone home, the 116acre property now oozes warmth and comfort. If you’re a walking enthusiast, you’ll be extra pleased to know that Lapito House shares a border with the Heysen Trail and Myponga National Park — and is the perfect base to return to after a wintery day of walking.

Boathouse at Birks Harbour, Goolwa

Are you someone who craves the water? Even in the cooler months, this absolute waterfront accommodation will do the trick! Listen out for native birds on your own private deck as the water laps up, or just watch the boats sail past. And when you need to get toasty, you’ll be just as happy to be sitting inside soaking in the local artwork and maritime features. Feast on a gourmet brekky basket, sip premium local wines or get out and enjoy everything nature has to offer, with fishing and cycling on the agenda, too.

Cruising is growing in popularity, and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down anytime soon. With our own Mediterranean cruise booked for later this year (yippee!), we decided to find out more about why people LOVE cruising so much… turns out, there’s a lot to love!

Seasoned cruisers will tell you one of their favourite things about holidaying on a ship is the convenience of unpacking once, and once only. When you settle into your cabin, you can sit back and relax, knowing you don't have to worry about packing and unpacking every time you move to a new destination.

From Broadway style shows to comedy clubs and live music, there’s always something to keep you entertained on board. For families, you’ll find most cruises have kids’ clubs, but they go further than that! Mini golf, table tennis, basketball, trivia, rock climbing, waterslides, even gokarts and sky-diving simulators… you name it and we’ll show you a cruise that has it!

Zippy in the city

She’s number one for a reason.

Say hello to the zippiest, sassiest and most stylish girl in the Adelaide BMW range — the all-new BMW X1. She’s sporty without being racy, she’s compact but comfortably fits the whole family inside, and she’s super smart without being arrogant.

The BMW X1 may be considered a small SUV, but strangely enough, she feels super roomy — I think it’s the big windows that make it airy and light-filled. Or maybe it's the luxurious upholstery. Yep, this car's interior is super sexy with her fancy vegan leather seats, curved touch display screen and modern central controls.

With Adelady written all over her (we literally stuck our pineapple logo on the side), she’s the ideal zippy car to take you from school drop-off to work, to a day out in the CBD. Parking is a breeze, and you might even find yourself a new favourite pastime… parallel parking on Rundle Street! Let’s hit the city.

Stop one: Parallel park on Union Street and pop into Penny’s University for a skinny dirty chai to go. You might as well do a little window-shopping on Rundle while you’re waiting.

Stop two: Beeline for David Jones’ car park and use the super clever Parking Assistant Plus to ease your way into any space, then get your fingers and toes pampered at The Nail Bar in Adelaide Central Plaza.

Stop three: Confidence on high, turn up the Harman Kardon surround sound system and take a short drive through the city to Gouger Street for an Asian feast at Mrs Q.

Stop four: Hearts and bellies full, ask the BMW Personal Assistant to direct you through the West End and enjoy a last-minute cheeky cocktail or mocktail at BCKYRD on Peel Street.

And before you know it, it’s time to pick up the kids from school!

If you’ve always dreamt of having your own Adelaide BMW, then this baby is calling your name — and she’ll look after you and keep you safe, like a good bestie would. Even better, there’s a fully electric version — the BMW iX1, which will be in the showroom in the coming months.

Pop in to see the fabulous team at Adelaide BMW and meet your new number one — the BMW X1.

Adelaide is buzzing with a brand new adventure!

Get your big girl pants on because the crew behind the hugely successful TreeClimb in the Adelaide Park Lands has brought us South Australia’s first aerial nets course and zip-line over the Heysen Trail.

With stunning views, TreeClimb Kuitpo Forest is 15 acres of aerial playground, offering a next-level experience for adventure kids and thrill-loving adults — as well as catering for some people with disabilities.

“We’ve made a concerted effort to design a far more inclusive and accessible product at Kuitpo, meaning more people with disabilities can experience elements of TreeClimb with their families and carers,” says Sam Nuzzo, Manager at Kuitpo.

With multi-level challenge courses, extended zip-line loops that cross over parts of the famous Heysen Trail, and a suspended aerial nets course, the new adventures are getting pulses pumping.

Like the TreeClimb you already know and love, the new development includes all the safety gear you could dream of — and, of course, highly skilled and trained staff, so you’re in good hands. It also has a nature play zone, an environmental education room, check-in area, safety and harnessing space — and yes, mums and dads, there's coffee, with a small cafe for refreshments.

I have my kids' birthday parties sorted for the next three years, at least. See you on the course!

The Grand Course awaits, with 59 obstacles set across four different levels — you just need to be a minimum height of 135cm to get cracking.

FOR THE YOUNG AND THE FEARLESS

Purpose built for little adventurers, say hello to the Kids’ Course, which happens to be exclusively for kids (with a minimum height of 100cm). Kids can go wild with 26 activities across two different levels.

Thinking about bringing a little one into the world? You need to know about this.

I’m 28 and smack-bang in the part of life where, all of a sudden, my friends have started having babies. And while I’m not entering the baby phase yet, I recently came across some information that I’ve started sharing with everyone in my life because it feels so important.

Years of diligent research at SA’s very own SAHMRI, supported by funding from The Hospital Research Foundation and the Thyne Reid Foundation, has got us to the point where we know that omega-3 plays an important part in pregnancy and reducing the risk of premature birth. And it turns out that an incredibly simple test (that can be done on blood already taken!) can detect your omega-3 levels and determine whether you need a boost or not. It’s that simple.

I’m far from an expert, so I gathered up all my million-and-one questions and asked Professor Maria Makrides. Let’s jump in!

WHAT IS OMEGA-3 TESTING USED FOR IN PREGNANCY?

This test determines the level of omega-3 fatty acids in the blood of a pregnant woman. Knowing whether you’re low in omega-3 fatty acids when you’re pregnant is important because there is a greater risk of having a premature baby when it’s low, compared to women who have sufficient omega-3. And it’s such an easy fix, as omega-3 supplements are easy to take.

One of the best ways to ensure your baby gets a good start to life is to be born at full term. Babies born too soon, especially before 34 weeks of gestation, are more likely to have lengthy hospital stays and may have longer term health and developmental problems.

- 28 FEEL GOOD: SAHMRI
OMEGA-3 PLAYS AN IMPORTANT PART IN PREGNANCY AND REDUCING THE RISK OF PREMATURE BIRTH.

HOW IS OMEGA-3 TESTING DONE?

There’s nothing extra to do, as the omega-3 test can be included as part of the standard testing that happens already. All pregnant women in SA have access to the SA Maternal Serum Antenatal Screening (SAMSAS) early in pregnancy, which is run by SA Pathology. Using this standard testing form, doctors can order an omega-3 test — with or without other SAMSAS tests.

From there, SAHMRI scientists analyse the omega-3 levels, then the results are sent back to your doctor, with advice depending on whether the levels are low, moderate or sufficient.

HOW DO YOU OPT-IN FOR OMEGA-3 TESTING?

It’s simple! Your doctor or maternal care provider will discuss the range of routine screenings that are available before 20 weeks of pregnancy. All you need to do is tick the omega-3 box on the SAMSAS request form. That’s it! Just tick a box.

HOW CAN WE HELP CONTINUE THIS IMPORTANT RESEARCH?

This screening is a first for SA, and this program will give researchers even more evidence of how omega-3 levels affect babies being born prematurely.

Since we’ve begun offering the Omega-3 ‘Test-and-Treat’ Program in partnership with SA Pathology, we’ve had more than 8,000 women participate. About 15 percent of women tested low and were advised about specific supplementation.

For this program to continue making a difference to our community, we need at least eight out of ten pregnant women to tick that box. At the moment, more than 100 pregnant women in South Australia are getting tested each week — we need to double this number!

If we get the same results from this program as we got in our controlled

WHO NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT OMEGA-3 TESTING?

Everyone needs to know about omega-3 testing — but particularly women who are pregnant with a single baby, because multiple births bring a lot of additional factors that affect whether the babies will be carried to full term or not.

HOW IMPORTANT IS THIS RESEARCH?

If we can recreate the results of the controlled research studies within our Community Omega-3 ‘Test-and-Treat’ Program, we expect to see a reduction of about 14 percent in babies born before 34 weeks of gestation.

research studies, we expect to see a reduction of about 14 percent in babies born before 34 weeks. That’s one in every seven babies prevented from being born too soon!

WHERE CAN MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS TESTING BE FOUND?

You can find information about omega-3 testing and the research that supports it on the SAHMRI website.

There is so much information out there surrounding parenthood and the path to getting there. At the very least, we hope our chat with Professor Maria Makrides helps you to make your own decisions, for you and your baby.

From broker to bestie

WORDS Millie Looker

I’m no home loan expert, but luckily, I know someone who is.

If you haven’t heard about the rising interest rates, chances are you’re living under a rock. And I mean a literal rock — because I don’t know a single homeowner across SA (or the country) who hasn’t been paying extra close attention to what those pesky interest rates are up to!

Luckily, we’ve got Scott Matthews (the director of Bernie Lewis Home Loans) on speed dial, ready to ask him our mortgagerelated questions whenever they pop up. And that’s just the way he likes it!

“Now’s the time to check in with your broker — they could potentially save you a lot of money, and we love guiding you to a better solution,” Scott says. “There are millions of people coming out of a fixed rate loan right now and finding out that the current interest rates are incredibly inflated. It’s a huge shock to the system!” While it pays to be aware about what the market is doing, you’re not expected to be an expert.

“That’s what we’re here for — to keep track of the interest rates and which banks are offering the most competitive rates, so you don’t have to! All you need to do is check in with your broker every year or so to make sure that you’re getting the best deal available at that time,” smiles Scott.

I’m a big believer in ‘sharing is caring’, so here are a few other pearls of wisdom from my chat with Scott.

FEEL GOOD: BERNIE LEWIS HOME LOANS
- 30
“NOW’S THE TIME TO CHECK IN WITH YOUR BROKER — THEY COULD POTENTIALLY SAVE YOU A LOT OF MONEY.”

Proof is in the… petrol?

I must have been looking a little blank during my chat with Scott because he broke down competitive interest rates with this simple scenario.

“It’s similar to fuel — we all know the fortnightly fuel cycle goes up and down. If you get complacent and don’t know what the ‘normal’ petrol price is and fill up the car whenever it suits, you could be spending thousands of dollars more on petrol each year than if you keep an eye on the price and fill up at its cheapest. It’s the same with your mortgage — keep an eye on your interest rates, find out the ‘normal’ from your broker and then make sure your mortgage reflects that. You could save thousands of dollars!”

Size does matter

We’re creatures of comfort, which often means we stick to what we know. But is that really the best idea?

“If you’re still with the same bank you first deposited your piggy bank into, firstly — bravo for your loyalty! But secondly, maybe it’s time to mix things up. Some of the smaller banks or mortgage specialists are able to offer lower rates to give them an edge and help attract more customers. It might be worth considering some of the little players instead,” says Scott.

How long are we talking?

There have been whispers on the street for a while now that interest rates are ready to turn back around. We’re really hoping there’s a nugget of truth in there somewhere, Scott!

“At this stage, we’re expecting interest rates to start to decrease towards the end of 2023, hopefully settling somewhere between the four and five percent mark.

The good news is that the Australian Banking System has always allowed a buffer in their approvals, so if you can find a way to make a couple of sacrifices along the way, repayments should still be achievable while the rates are skyrocketing!”

Scott is just one of the extremely knowledgeable brokers in the Bernie Lewis Home Loans team. And if our chat today taught me anything, it’s that there’s a broker out there who would be genuinely overjoyed to help you secure a great new loan. So, don’t be shy, make a new broker bestie today!

The good fight

You usually know us as bright and bubbly — but when it comes to the health of our families, we turn into fierce warriors!

That’s why in 2023, we’ve officially joined the fight against disease and illness with The Hospital Research Foundation Group.

Over the past six years, we’ve supported many campaigns from this beautiful notfor-profit organisation — especially The Longest Table fundraiser, through which we’ve raised over $300,000 for one of the Group’s charities, Australian Breast Cancer Research.

But that barely scratches the surface! The Hospital Research Foundation Group has more than 10 charities under its umbrella, and supports more than 50 areas of medical research and patient care from birth to end of life, across every public hospital and community in South Australia — so, this isn’t a small fight!

If you look around at your family and friends, chances are that you know someone who has been impacted by a

disease or illness. Every South Australian stands to benefit from their amazing work, and we’re proud to be fighting the good fight together.

Here's a little more of their story...

From birth

Bringing a healthy child into the world is one of life’s true gifts. Sadly though, not everyone can experience this joy, due to complications with conception, pregnancy or birth.

Thanks to generous donors, fundraisers and ticket-buyers in the Hospital Research Foundation Home Lottery, they’ve been able to fund world-leading research and prenatal care in our hospitals to improve outcomes for mums and bubs.

WORDS Hayley Pearson and Lauren De Cesare Dr Maggie Centenera. Photo: Brenton Edwards. WE’RE PROUD TO BE FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT TOGETHER. Illustration: SAHMRI and Bragg Comprehensive Cancer Centre (currently under construction).

Just one of the projects funded by the foundation aims to improve IVF success rates through revolutionary technology that can determine the healthiest embryos. Another project involves trialling a new device that can rapidly diagnose pre-eclampsia within 30 minutes — which currently takes up to 24 long hours!

These incredible leaps and bounds from great minds in the lab can be restricted by tight funding, so researchers rely heavily on support from organisations like The Hospital Research Foundation Group to take it to the next level.

To end of life

Patient care is also a huge focus area for the foundation, particularly palliative care. When someone is faced with a terminal or life-limiting illness, palliative care can help support the patient and their loved ones through this difficult time. Someone may be in palliative care for days, months or even years, so it’s really about helping them live in comfort and bringing them

moments of joy, so they can create cherished memories with family.

The Hospital Research Foundation Group funds care programs right across South Australia’s palliative care units, from art therapy and pet therapy to new approaches to pain relief and more. Just one example of the programs that the Group helps to fund is the beautiful miniature horses from Nolton Park Horses Healing Hearts, who visit over 20,000 adults and children each year inside hospitals, hospice programs and aged care facilities to bring them joy.

And everything in between

And, of course, the foundation funds initiatives to fight a range of diseases, including cancer, heart disease, stroke, mental health, COVID-19, kidney disease, diabetes and so much more. They’re playing a major part in the start-up of the Bragg Comprehensive Cancer Centre (BCCC) currently under construction on North Terrace. Once

this phenomenal centre is completed, the BCCC expects to save 2,000 lives per year through cancer research, patient care, clinical trials, support and preventative measures for South Australians and beyond.

The BCCC will also be co-located with the Australian Bragg Centre for Proton Therapy and Research — the first place in the Southern Hemisphere to provide proton therapy (a type of radiation therapy that uses protons rather than x-rays to treat cancer) for children and young people with cancer. And that’s going to be right here in Adelaide!

This is some truly amazing stuff, and as we join forces with The Hospital Research Foundation Group, we hope you feel equally as proud about supporting these life-changing projects.

So, what are you waiting for? Join the good fight with us!

What’s in it for you?

To support you in reaching your workforce development goals, the friendly team at Mas works with you as the business owner or individual to understand your needs and see what Federal Funding you could be eligible for. Traineeships and apprenticeships can attract up to $15,000 in funding for the employer, and up to $5,000 for the apprentice or trainee — eligibility criteria applies. How good is that!

In full bloom

Here’s a walking talking example of just what they can do...

You know that giant pink building on Anzac Highway? It belongs to SA biz, Edible Blooms — the creators of some of Adelaide’s most loved edible bouquet arrangements — who have really made the most of Mas National’s expertise across the years.

“Edible Blooms started to grow quickly, which was so exciting — but it meant we had young team members stepping up to the plate and taking on leadership roles. As great as they were at their jobs, we wanted to make sure that we were setting them up for a successful future within the business and, of course, to make sure they were representing our brand well with every interaction. When Mas National reached out, we set up a meeting straight away!” says Kelly Jamieson, owner of Edible Blooms.

After one phone call, Mas National team member Kylie sat down with Kelly to understand exactly what would help Edible Blooms to keep growing, and which roles needed extra support. Before long, Kylie matched employees Bella and Madison with the perfect traineeship pathways. They each took on the Certificate IV in Leadership and Management.

Now, a few years down the track, Bella and Madison have finished up their traineeships. “The girls are both so important to our team! It’s wonderful to see them flourishing here at Edible Blooms, with the added confidence and experience of a traineeship behind them,” smiles Kelly.

Groundbreaking wellbeing hub

It should come as no surprise that when Scotch set their sights on a new fitness facility, they decided to go all out. The brand new Purruna Spencer Newton Centre is more than just a couple of basketball courts — it’s a groundbreaking wellbeing hub, designed to give back to the students and surrounding community for years to come.

This impeccably designed $27-million facility includes two new indoor courts, pilates, dance and fitness suites, a high performance gym, a swimming centre, classroom spaces, meditation spaces, consultation rooms and breakout areas. It’s all created to enhance Scotch’s wellbeing offer — an important part of their mission

Scotch College has been cooking up something new to benefit future generations.

to improve the wellbeing, satisfaction, performance and achievements of their students and employees.

“It’s essential for us to know that our students are resilient as they learn, grow and develop. We know that wellbeing is considered a major contributor to both high-achieving academic results and personal and professional success in later life,” says Scotch Principal Trent Driver. “We hope Purruna will be the key to enhancing their wellbeing as they grow into global citizens, and we hope the local community will be able to share that journey with us through exercise and activities.”

So, what sets it apart?

A name worth mentioning Purruna Spencer Newton Centre is a strong name — let’s break it down.

In the language of the Kaurna people, Purruna is a word that gives life and is a tribute to the traditional owners of the land. As for Spencer Newton? That’s a nod to two icons in the history of Scotch College — Raymond Spencer and Dr John Newton — who have been instrumental players in this monumental project.

- 38 FEEL GOOD: SCOTCH COLLEGE
WHEN SCOTCH SET THEIR SIGHTS ON A NEW FITNESS FACILITY, THEY DECIDED TO GO ALL OUT.

A nod to Mother Nature

When it comes to the environment, we’re not just talking about being sustainable here — no siree, we’re talking about a regenerative design, which means this new building isn’t just lessening the harm to our planet but actively making a positive change.

Here are a few of the key design elements:

• It’s built with the Living Building Challenge in mind, which means the building needs to have a positive impact immediately, as well as for the future in order to gain its certification.

• It has a 330-kilowatt solar powered system. To put that into perspective,

the average house runs on a 6-kilowatt to 7-kilowatt system. Scotch ain’t mucking around! • It has a reduction in water usage by up to 50 percent, compared to standard systems.

"As an educational institution, we have a responsibility not just to educate, but to inspire future leaders to take action on the pressing issue of climate change,” says Natalie Felkl, Director of Community & Marketing and the Sustainability Committee. “Purruna represents our commitment to leading by example, by going beyond simply reducing harm and actively contributing to a better future for our environment.

“This building is not just a physical structure, but a symbol of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and a beacon of hope for the future of the built environment in South Australia."

Everyone’s welcome

If you’re feeling jealous of the lucky Scotch students who get to enjoy the Purruna Spencer Newton Centre, we’ve got good news! Scotch has teamed up with YMCA to offer memberships to the public, including pilates, yoga, aqua

classes, lap swimming and swimming lessons — all with beautiful views overlooking the city.

We tip our hats to the innovative Scotch College team who shine light on the importance of wellbeing and make it a central focus of everything they do. We can’t wait to see this new centre (and the lucky people who utilise it) flourish over the coming years.

One minute, our beautiful Sofia was a tiny baby — and now, she’s a pocket rocket ready for her next Goodstart adventure.

I know I was warned about how fast time flies, but I can’t believe I have a toddler! Sofia has been attending Goodstart Early Learning since she was 10 months old and has always loved it. So, when it was time to transition her from the Nursery to the Toddler Room at 18 months, she was thrilled.

The Toddler Room offers a more structured and interactive learning environment, with plenty of activities that promote independence and selfhelp skills. Not to mention, Sofia’s days are filled with indoor and outdoor imaginative play and spending time with her new baby besties — helloooo, Lenny and Bella!

ANY PLACE THAT SOFIA LOVES THIS MUCH, WE LOVE TOO.

“We love the toddler age at Goodstart. It’s the perfect time to help your child develop their independence, imagination and motor skills, and build the foundation for lifelong language and literacy skills. It’s all about encouraging them to explore their world in a safe and nurturing environment,” says Jodie Hannaford, Centre Director.

Here are a few things that Goodstart does in the Toddler Room to make our lives easier and fill Sofia’s days with joy.

A SAFE SPACE

With the Goodstart team standing beside us, it’s been easy to take a step back and watch Sofia thrive. Each child has a key educator who works closely with a very small group of children and their families, so you can feel comfortable that there is someone who really knows and understands your child. Nothing makes me happier than seeing her walking in, all smiles and no tears — you can tell she feels happy and safe to be there, which makes me feel so calm when leaving her.

REGULAR ROUTINES

Hell hath no fury like a toddler whose routine has been rudely interrupted! Goodstart works with you to create a routine to keep your little one cool, calm and collected, while ensuring they get enough rest during the day. Each child even has their own bed and bedding, so they’re always in a familiar space.

MILESTONES

It feels like every day, Sofia is waking up with new words she seems to have learnt in her sleep! Children understand what’s being said to them before they can express themselves, so the Goodstart team will watch your baby’s expressions, gestures and new words, so they can continue to foster their development and celebrate all the exciting milestones with you!

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Mealtimes at Goodstart are never rushed, and the meals are nutritious and tasty for tiny tots to enjoy, with some great development opportunities, like learning to feed themselves and helping to clean up. I swear she likes Goodstart’s pasta way more than mine!

PLAY

There’s nothing we love more than checking the secure online updates throughout the day and seeing Sofia play. The joy! The fun! All the kids have the best time, enjoying different activities indoors and outdoors, including dance, creative play and learning experiences.

The first time Sofia pulled on her backpack and strutted into Goodstart’s Toddler Room like she owned the joint, we felt a little bit sad. But, we also realised that any place that Sofia loves this much, we love too. She’s not just getting a good start, but the best start.

Not just a road, it’s a brand new destination.

It’s the gateway to the Adelaide Hills, but these days, the top of Magill Road in Adelaide’s east is almost unrecognisable after undergoing months of roadworks, renovations, upgrades and putting big plans in place. Now, the brand new Magill Village is finally here for businesses, local residents and visitors to enjoy — and she’s a beauty!

Here’s everything there is to love about the brand new Magill Village.

Easy access

For any cyclists out there, you’ll be thrilled to know that the roads have been opened up to make them more pedestrian and

cyclist friendly, with designated bike lanes and plenty of space. This is especially good news for anyone that tackles the Norton Summit ride on the weekends.

A nature-lovers delight

A little bit of greenery goes a long way, and one of the finishing touches is Magill Village’s landscaping, which incorporates water sensitive urban design. With the road bordering the City of Burnside and Campbelltown City Council, the two councils have planted plenty of new trees, and the manicured garden beds will look spectacular as they flourish.

A sight to behold

It’s not all drinks and schnitties at the Tower Hotel now that the incredible 11-metre mural has been completed. Designed by John Whitney and painted with Bernadette Freeman, Ann Whitby, Sally Caston, James Parker and June Turbin, the mural depicts the history of the Magill area, which was originally known as Makgill. If you’re passing by, stop and take a look… and maybe pop in for a drink while you’re there.

As well as hitting up all the specialty stores, restaurants, bars and cafes, keen shoppers can also run daily errands and tick off their to-do list. Magill Village may just be one of our new fave all-rounders.

Fill your belly

Of course, we’ve got to start with the food! Whether you’re up for a quick coffee or a delicious dinner, there’s a meal with your name on it at Magill Village.

Hibernia Cafe serves up mouth-watering brunch and lunch, seven days a week (I have dreams about their braised beef bene with chipotle hollandaise, crispy kale and poached eggs).

Pepper Street Arts Centre is a great spot to grab a steaming cup of coffee and peruse the clever creations; and Greek Pastries & Delicacies serves our sweet tooth exactly what it wants. Catlin Wines is Magill’s answer to an intimate wine bar; and you’ll always leave Baan Thai, New Oriental Pearl, Amigo’s Café & Pizzeria, or Indian Club SA with a bursting belly. And that’s barely the beginning!

You wouldn’t let someone without a licence drive your car, so don’t take any risks when it comes to a building inspection.

My jaw dropped when I heard you can be a building inspector without being a licensed builder — and I’m sure I’m not alone. The good news? House Inspect Australia is determined to give you what you deserve when it comes to your biggest investment.

Mama of two, Litsa Adamou works alongside her partner in life and business, Barney, and with their business associate, Mike Pearl, they’re the backbone of House Inspect Australia. Founded by Mike eight years ago, House Inspect Australia is a proudly South Australian owned and operated business with a branch in New South Wales. This kick-ass queen is a qualified building inspector holding a current builder’s licence, and she’s more than breaking the glass ceiling — she’s shattering it.

“Currently, you don’t need to be a licensed builder to be an inspector, but we know that’s what you need. All our

inspectors hold a builder’s licence and qualifications, so they’re experts at telling you what’s right and wrong with a property. When so much weighs on that advice, it’s vital to get it right!” Litsa explains.

House Inspect Australia knows the areas they operate in like the back of their hand. They can tell you exactly how specific weather, terrain and locally or commonly sourced building materials can affect the quality of a build. “You want to make sure someone knows what they’re talking about — it could make or break your sale or purchase of a home, investment or business. That’s a big deal!” Litsa says.

BOTH SIDES OF THE COIN

These property protectors are on hand to safeguard people like you and I, as well as the builders and the developers on the other side of the equation. “You might be buying, building or selling a house or investment property. Our team has the knowledge to give you the facts upfront, and the skills to thoroughly assess any kind of issues. When it comes to supporting the

builders, we provide independent quality checks during the project and before hand-over to ensure it meets all the codes and standards,” Litsa explains. “We’re there for our customers and the industry — to make it better all round!”

More than anything, this team wants you to hit your goal. “I love that we can take the stress out of such a big transaction and we can give you all the right info to achieve your dream of home ownership or investment.”

It’s no surprise that Litsa has won several awards, and she’s driven to bring others into the fold. “I’m passionate about more females in our next generation getting into the construction industry. It’s no longer just a man’s world!”

For a top-quality building inspection, get in touch with Litsa and the team — they’ve got your back.

Kate Collins’ SA faves

WORDS Hayley Pearson

She’s got the smarts, she’s got the smile and she’s one hell of a mum — meet Channel 9’s Kate Collins!

Local girl through and through, Kate Collins grew up in SA and kicked off her media career at Channel 9 seventeen years ago. She landed her dream role as a news anchor in 2011 — and we've been lucky enough to have her in our living rooms every weeknight since.

Like most working mums, all balls are up in the air for Kate, and she somehow manages to juggle two busy boys, Harvey (9) and Eddie (5), like an award-winning Fringe artist.

“I love my job and our viewers — and it’s a privilege to share the newsdesk with Brenton Ragless every night. I also love that I can do school drop-off and come home to a chaotic house every night with my husband and boys.”

Lights and cameras aside, Kate’s a down-to-earth family girl who, like us, lives and breathes SA! And because I've had a long running girl crush on her, I crashed her change room to find out where this wonder woman loves to eat, shop and play in South Australia.

Over to you, Kate!

Fave place to brunch

Henry + Rose in Keith. They have superfriendly staff, and their brekky burger literally brings me back to life on long trips down to the South East.

I also adore my local cafe, SAHA, in Maylands. The owner, Abs, makes a mean almond milk flat white, and their smashed avocado with pomegranate molasses is to-die-for! Oh, and I can’t forget Qahwa in Victor Harbor. It’s such a great place right on the beach, so the kids can play and you can enjoy a coffee while it's still hot!

Fave region to holiday

We love spending our holidays and precious weekends off either on the Fleurieu Peninsula or in the South East. No matter where we are, my kids are drawn to the sea — so you’ll find us spending days bodyboarding at Victor Harbor or digging in the sand at Robe.

Fave coffee spots

Cheeky Grin Coffee and FrescoBah! When you find a good barista, you never let them go.

Fave SA labels

Kinney makes great, easy dresses; Acler and Significant Other have the party dresses sorted; and Lexi or Couture+Love+Madness are my go-to for those special occasions.

Fave thing to do with the kids

Anything outdoors that burns up energy! My boys love hitting the BMX dirt tracks on South Terrace, Challenge Hill at Woodhouse Activity Centre in Piccadilly, and TreeClimb at Kuitpo Forest.

So, there you have it — some local gems from one of our local gems!

500g Cheer Mozzarella Block

80g plain flour

2 eggs, lightly whisked

130g panko breadcrumbs

Olive oil, to shallow fry

Tomato pasta sauce, warmed to serve

• Cut the cheese block into thick slices, then into sticks (approximately 1.5cm x 1.5cm). Set aside on a plate.

• Add the flour to a bowl, eggs to another bowl, and panko breadcrumbs to a third bowl.

• Toss the mozzarella in the flour, dusting off the excess. Dip each stick into the egg, then roll in breadcrumbs, pressing firmly to coat. Transfer to a tray lined with baking paper. Chill in the fridge for 15 minutes.

• Pour 1cm of olive oil into a large frying pan. Heat oil over a medium to high heat. While it’s heating, line a second baking tray with paper towel.

• Working in batches, shallow-fry the mozzarella sticks, turning until golden on all sides. Place each stick on paper towel to remove excess oil.

• Serve the sticks warm, with heated pasta sauce or a pesto dip, salt, pepper and lemon wedges. They’re also great chopped and tossed through a salad the next day!

1 store-bought pastry shell

Panna cotta filling

50ml Schweppes Zero Sugar Pink Lemonade

4 gelatine leaves

250ml full cream milk

250ml thickened cream

35g caster sugar

1 tbsp vanilla bean paste

1 tsp rose essence

Pink Lemonade layer

150ml Schweppes Zero Sugar Pink Lemonade

2 gelatine leaves

1 drop pink food colouring

• Prepare your pre-made pastry shell as per packet instructions and set aside.

• To make the panna cotta filling, heat the milk, cream, sugar, pink lemonade and vanilla bean paste in a saucepan over a low to medium heat until almost at a boil. Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly.

• While the filling cools, add gelatine leaves to cold water and allow to soften (approximately 5–10 minutes).

• Remove gelatine leaves from water and squeeze out the excess water, then add to the warm milk mixture, whisking until dissolved.

• Pour the milk filling into the tart shell, and refrigerate until set (3 hours minimum).

• To make the pink lemonade layer, soak the gelatine leaves in cold water for 5–7 minutes.

• In a small saucepan over a low heat, add pink lemonade and food colouring, and stir until combined. Remove from heat.

• Squeeze the excess water out of the gelatine leaves and add to the lemonade mixture, stirring until the gelatine has dissolved.

• Pour mixture into a jug and allow to cool to room temperature before pouring it over the panna cotta filling. Return to the fridge to set.

• Garnish with edible flowers and crushed pistachios.

One focuses on food and the other is all about the cocktails. So, let’s get all dolled up and explore.

DOLLY

Unley’s newest addition, Dolly brings the vibes to 5061 and is modelled on the European style of drinking, where food is there to accompany your drinking experience, working together to create a great time. Located on bustling Unley Road, she’s an intimate space that’s packed with personality… perfect for a session with the girls.

Dolly isn't just a pretty face — this place knows how to party. “I noticed that there were no cocktails outside of town, so that was our key focus, and it’s working for us,” Sam says. The drinks menu is impressive to say the least, with a range of delicious cocktails that are sure to hit the spot.

Why not try a Coconut Mint Margarita or a Hot Stuff, with gin, pear liqueur, verjuice, lemon and soda? And if you prefer something a little stronger, they also offer a selection of premium spirits and liqueurs.

Dolly is the perfect central meeting spot for an arvo drink with your besties, or an after dinner wine with your better half. Of course, you can nibble on scrumptious bites and small plates. “We’re not a bar and we’re not a restaurant — we’re somewhere in the middle.”

And keep an eye out for something exciting popping up behind Dolly. It's tasty, fun and will make Hart Avenue come alive!

BAR LUNE

If you're looking for an out of this world dining experience, look no further than Bar Lune and Eatery in Beulah Park. This trendy spot sets the bar high for the Adelaide dining scene with its unique blend of delicious food and booze.

“Lune’s perfect for a romantic date or a fun dinner with friends, and our restaurant offers a range of dishes that are both delicious and inventive,” Sam says.

From the super popular prawn toast to the pork sando, or spinach and ricotta croquettes, the food is a party in itself. But it's not just the food that's getting rave reviews — Bar Lune can transform into an incredible event space. With a newly renovated, spacious outdoor dining area and courtyard, it’s a great spot for a party, special event or wedding reception.

Sam and his awesome team have the X-factor when it comes to creating super cool bars and restaurants in Adelaide. Keep an eye out for what’s next… because we’ve got no doubt it’s going to be rad!

What’s red, pink and delicious all over? Prospect’s latest hit, KOYO!

Created by a team of professionals who previously worked in Japanese restaurants together, this Asian fusion restaurant is a treat for all five senses and offers up the goods all day long.

SIGHT FOR SORE EYES

The decor is a dream come true, with red and pink tones and the perfect balance of luxe and casual. You can sit at the bar, keep it simple at any of the timber tables or cosy up in one of the red velvet booths. Huge windows let the daylight in, while pendants set the mood lighting at night, making any time a good time to dine at KOYO.

WHAT’S THAT SOUND?

It’s the sizzle of the Japanese coal fire!

“A lot of our menu is cooked over the chargrill because it adds a great depth of flavour. We leave our kitchen open, so the delicious smells waft out and get your mouth watering while you wait for your food to arrive,” says Manager Clara Hoang.

SMELLS LIKE…

Depending on what time you visit, you’ll either get a whiff of strong coffee or a

hint of red wine. The drinks menu is just as well curated as the food menu, with a cocktail list that had us drooling (hellooo, mango daiquiri!) and a wine list that’s been carefully matched to the food.

THE MAGIC TOUCH

KOYO welcomes everyone with open arms — and whether you’re popping in for a coffee in the AM or booking a full feast in the PM, everything your mouth touches will make your heart sing.

TASTE DELIGHT

If Asian flavours are your jam, you’re in for a real treat! The allday menu runs from 11am until late, seven days a week, and includes plenty of little dishes so you can sample everything. The tempura green beans with whipped tofu and nori salt were demolished before we’d even sat down; and the salted daikon, mushroom and tofu dumplings with shiitake dashi and crispy garlic oil are what dreams are made of. The skewers embrace the fiery flavours of the grill, and the bigger dishes are perfect for a hearty meal.

For our fellow indecisive pals, there’s a $70 per person ‘Let us feed you’ option, so all you have to do is sit back and eat the yumminess in front of you. And if a hearty lunch is your thing, it’s time to get pumped for the ‘Bottomless lunch’ option for $39 per person, which includes a lunch dish and one-and-a-half hours of unlimited beer, bubbles, coffee or mocktails every Sunday. @koyo.adl

Family dinners, friendly catch-ups or date nights filled with romance — it’s time to go crazy for KOYO.

Backyard pizza party

WORDS Millie Looker

Thirty years in the business makes Al Forno the wood fired pizza oven experts.

Picture this — it’s Friday and you’re ready for a quiet night at home with friends and family, a glass of wine and a delicious pizza. But instead of calling your local for takeaway, you wander into your backyard and whip up some phenomenal wood fired pizza instead. The theatre! The fun! The deliciousness!

Al Forno is here to make that dream a reality with their range of traditional wood fired pizza ovens. These aren’t just any pizza ovens, oh no! They’re the best of the best — made in Italy by a company that’s been operating for 65 years.

The pizza kings behind Al Forno, Rob Cusenza and Maurelio ‘Gabs’ Gabrielli, found a way to bring these high-quality, traditional Italian ovens to Adelaide in easy to assemble components, meaning that installation is a breeze. Instead of

assembling individual bricks, you only have a few pieces to join together (depending on the size of the oven), and you’ve got yourself a fully-fledged wood fired pizza oven.

Newbie alert!

Striving to make home-cooked pizzas accessible to anyone and everyone, Rob and Gabs have a new portable pizza oven on the market that guarantees the same high quality result. Introducing Al Forno’s new gas pizza oven range, Brio. It’s metal with gas burners inside, so all you need to do is pop it on your bench or its accompanying base, hook it up to your gas connection and you’re ready for pizza within 30 minutes.

This new addition to the Al Forno range is great for smaller spaces and perfect for homes with an outdoor kitchen, as it’s neat and tidy, and doesn't require wood or leave any ash to clean out. And to take one more item off your to-do list, these gas ovens come with the Australian

certificate for gas installation and are up to Australian standards. Hooray, no pesky call out fee for sign off!

Bring a piece of traditional Italy into your backyard with an Al Forno pizza oven. You’ll never regret a bite of perfect pizza!

The know-how

You’ve got your pizza oven, you’ve invited your besties over for pizza night — now what?

Anyone who purchases a pizza oven is given a masterclass in all things dough, toppings and cooking from Rob. As Al Forno’s office neighbours, we’ve been lucky enough to taste Rob’s wood fired pizza many times and can safely say he’s an expert.

Betty’s your way

Just like everyone has a different taste in music or clothes, our tastebuds also know exactly how we like our burger. Tomato or no tomato? Ketchup only, or extra saucy? There are a million different combos and luckily, the legends at Betty’s Burgers are ready to serve up anything you like.

Every single burger is made to order, which means you can make your burger dreams come true. With simple food and uncomplicated ingredients, you can tweak any burger on the menu to suit your preferences, whether it’s an indulgent experience or bringing it back to basics.

And each restaurant reflects that flexible, go with the flow beach lifestyle that Betty’s is all about. Want to dine in and enjoy the summery, laid-back atmosphere? Great! Want to grab your burger to go and stuff your face in the privacy of your own home? You got it! There are no rules at Betty’s, as long as you’re happy.

If you’re just starting out on your burgerloving journey, ask the ultra-friendly team for their top picks — I’m a big fan of ordering the staff’s recommendation, it’s always a banger! In the meantime, we’ve got a few suggestions for you — just take your pick and get ready to feast your heart out.

BEYOND THE BURGER

Go for the burgers, but stay for the indulgent extras! Do yourself a huge favour and sample their rich and creamy frozen custard ice cream. You can keep it simple with their OG vanilla or chocolate flavours, or enjoy a scoop from their deluxe range, featuring chocolate raspberry lamington, vanilla coconut velvet or rich chocolate brownie. Picking a favourite is impossible!

And to wash it down, enjoy one of their decadent thick shakes, sip on a soft drink or splurge on a wine or beer — that’s right, Betty’s is licensed! Their Small Things Rosé served in a can is simply delightful when paired with the perfect burger bite, or enjoy one of their bespoke Betty’s Beers, made exclusively by our local friends at Pirate Life.

KEEP IT TRIM

If you’re trying to stay low carb or keto, give the Bare Betty a go. Wrapped in lettuce, it’s a cleaner way to still indulge in a delicious burger with your mates, without the guilt.

TROPICAL THUNDER

Sick of the 9 to 5 and want to pretend you’re in a tropical paradise for a few minutes? We highly recommend Betty's Crispy Chicken Supreme with bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato and special sauce… but don’t stop there! Add pineapple for just a dollar and you’ll be saying “mahalo” in no time.

AVOCAD-OMG

No need to take a second mortgage out to enjoy avocado on your Crispy Chicken Smash Burger. The avocado is the perfect antidote to the spicy pickles and sriracha mayo that take this burger to the next level.

FOR THE RAVENOUS

You won’t find yourself rummaging through the fridge for a midnight snack after filling your tummy with the Betty’s Double (with double beef and double cheese), or the Betty’s Deluxe (add beetroot and egg, of course). A side of fries or onion rings will fill any final gaps.

FOR EVERY DAY

The most popular burger on the menu is still the Betty’s Classic. It’s everything you

want and need in a burger: Angus beef, lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and special sauce, all wrapped up in a soft milk bun. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

When the craving hits and you know nothing will fill your belly like a burger, you know where to go — straight to Betty’s.

Old-school social

WORDS Em Worthington

The bygone days of your local social club are back!

Calling all eighties babies — remember the social clubs of years ago? These versatile spaces were made for everything from birthday celebrations to corporate events, even weddings or a bite to eat on a lazy Sunday afternoon, with plenty of space for kids to run around in a safe environment. The Victoria Park Social Club gives you a modern take on these traditional community gathering spots — with great food, excellent wines, cocktails and a family-friendly vibe.

You’ll find this hub in the heritagelisted Bookmakers League Building at Victoria Park Racecourse, which has been meticulously restored and is set for nothing but good times. Owner of La Dolce Vita Catering, Rob Paglia took over the historic venue to create a flexible space that appeals to all ages. He seriously knows food, and the team

uses premium local ingredients to serve up dishes that are designed to share.

“Our main inspiration was the social clubs from our childhoods. We wanted to create a modern-day, versatile space where you can have a casual or black-tie wedding, wine dinners, themed nights or just a Sunday afternoon drinks session. Nothing’s over the top — it’s just a great place to be social,” Rob says.

The line-up

Given the adaptable nature of the venue, we recommend booking or checking their socials, but Thursdays to Sundays need to be on your radar. Thursday nights are ideal for feeding the whole family, especially hungry kids after sport or school activities — say ciao to Pizza

Night, with continuous pizza, antipasto and salad, gelati for the kids and $10 Aperol Spritz or $10 corkage per bottle of vino. When not booked for a wedding or function, Friday and Saturday nights serve up pizza, pasta and a revolving specials board. And Sundays bring back the casual hangs when it opens up to the public from midday, but we suggest making a booking so you can get your fix of pizza, pasta, barbecue bites, drink specials, bocce and a DJ — sounds pretty perfect!

If you’re throwing a wedding, big birthday bash or corporate event, this is an incredible space in the heart of Adelaide that can cater for up to 300 guests, which is hard to come by. Vic Park Social Club’s also the place to catch some of your favourite regional vinos, with wine dinners during the year, alongside plenty of themed events across the calendar — keep across their socials so you don’t miss out!

When you next feel the pangs of nostalgia for some quality community vibes, grab your crew and get all kinds of connected at the Victoria Park Social Club.

We’re into coffee, big time.

When you’re on the go every single day, sometimes you need a pickme-up. CIBO Espresso has saved our butts time and time again, whether that’s with a speedy bite to eat, a sugar hit or our daily caffeine fix.

It’s not one size fits all, though. Sometimes our coffee order sounds more like a complicated rap song, but the talented baristas get it right every. Damn. Time. Here’s a sneak peek into our daily coffee order — maybe it will inspire you to sip something new!

SKINNY

DIRTY CHAI – HAYLEY

I had my first skinny dirty chai five years ago and haven’t looked back since. The CIBO spiced chai mix is perfectly balanced, the coffee is bang on and the

skinny milk makes me feel like I’m making good choices. It’s a winner!

SKINNY LATTE – LAUREN

I always stick to my trusty skinny latte. The best way to kickstart a client meeting is to walk in holding a big tray of bright red CIBO cups.

ICED ALMOND LATTE – MILLIE

I like to pretend I’m living an endless summer, so my iced almond latte does the trick. CIBO Espresso is also a winner for the high quality milk alternatives because as much as I love milk, milk just doesn't love me.

CIBOCCINO – KRISTY

I’m always down to try something new, and lately, the exclusive CIBOccino has grabbed my attention. It’s a hot or iced coffee with a signature CIBO sweet hazelnut paste mixed in. It’s a total taste bomb!

TEA – FLIC

Much to the amazement of the women I work with, I don’t drink coffee — I know, how do I get through my days! CIBO has me covered with a luxe range of loose leaf teas. I’d go a steaming pot of their peppermint tea any day of the week!

FRIZZANTE – LILY

I’m a dairy free gal, so it makes me happy that I don’t have to miss out with CIBO’s frizzantes. I pick my fave dairy-free gelati flavour (though any flavour works!) and the CIBO team whizz it up into a frozen slushy-style drink.

ITALIAN HOT CHOCOLATE – EM

Nine times out of ten, I end up at CIBO with my kids, which means hot chocolates are the go. The silky Italian hot chocolate topped with whipped cream is heaven!

ESPRESSO – RHI

I don’t muck around when it comes to coffee — I want to taste the locally roasted CIBO coffee bean blend without anything getting in my way! So, a simple espresso is the way to my heart.

And the good news is if we mix up our cups when we sit down for a meeting, no one cares! Every sip, no matter how you order it, is simply perfecto!

VICTORIA HOTEL, STRATHALBYN

Rug up and make a day of it by heading 40 minutes from the Adelaide CBD to the crackling fires at the Vic Hotel in Strathalbyn. You’re welcomed into the historic bluestone building with the kind of country hospitality that comes with being in a quaint town like Strath. Heads up to schedule it around a meal so you don’t miss out on feasting in the unique split-level restaurant that’s got a lush garden, and views of the water feature and historic stone barn. And although you can choose from plenty of drinks, their list of local reds makes us oh-soproud to be South Australian!

THE COLONIST, NORWOOD

There’s a solid reason The Colonist’s been going strong since 1851! She’s a beauty all year-round, but the toasty flames in the Fireplace Room and the outdoor heaters and blinds make it ideal for an easy drink or feed in winter. The atmosphere in this intricate venue makes it super welcoming and cosy, with its high ceilings, ornate copper roofing and original scenic wallpaper. Add in a menu that features seasonal ingredients from some of SA’s finest suppliers, tapas, pub classics and restaurant-quality meals (including options for gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian needs), and you’re a-ok in the depths of the cold here.

In the mood for a little afternoon delight?

Say hello to South Australia’s sweetest new candy store, Kandy House!

Not your average lolly shop, Kandy House in Parabanks Shopping Centre is fully loaded with sweet treats from all over the world, including confectionery you won’t find anywhere else in Adelaide.

You know when you're gallivanting overseas and your eyes open up to a whole new world of flavour sensations?

You stock up because you know you’re never going to find that delicious goodness at home in Adelaide!

Well, you can eat your hat because chances are Kandy House in Salisbury has it! “We have people driving from Hallett Cove to Parabanks Shopping Centre just to get their hands on some of our unique products, and quite often, it’s something they've fallen in love with overseas,” says Kandy House owner and lolly enthusiast, Markus Blake.

Have you ever tried OREO O’s Cereal? Only in America, huh? How about Candy Sushi? “We’ve got more than 2,000 lines of sweets from across the world — South America, Malaysia, Japan and, of course, Australia too.” And everything is separated into regions, so you can go from Asia to America in just a couple of steps.

Don't worry, they also have plenty of classic favourites, like Jelly Belly jelly beans, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and Australia’s own Wagon Wheels. And because the sweet isn't as sweet without

the savoury, they have that, too. “I reckon we have Australia’s biggest selection of international Pringles, as well as The World’s Hottest Corn Chips!” Markus says.

If you’re planning an event, why not bring Kandy House to the party? They offer party supplies and custom candy buffets where you can actually create your own dessert bar full of sweeties you won’t find anywhere else. “We’ll load you up with everything you need to host the best party — tableware, balloons, bulk candy and chocolate, popcorn and slushy machines, platters and even pre-packed goodie bags filled with a variety of sweet treats,” smiles Markus.

And four final words to sweeten the deal — you can order online!

The Adelaide food and drink scene has never looked so good.

Gone are the days of Adelaide being called a ‘big sleepy country town’. Now, we’re finding hot new spots to gather our gals where we’d least expect them — and they’re absolutely blowing our socks off. Adelaide is quickly becoming the home of incredible local produce, coffee, cocktails and more… and we’re loving every second.

To celebrate some of these local finds, we’ve pulled together five of the hottest new cafes, bars and restaurants across Adelaide. Cheers to fabulous food and drink!

Kiin

Starting strong in the city, we’ve got Kiin — a modern Asian restaurant with a big Thai influence. Owners Ben and David aren’t new to the game, having spent their lives training and working on the east coast. “We decided to make the move to

WE’RE FINDING HOT NEW SPOTS TO GATHER OUR GALS WHERE WE’D LEAST EXPECT THEM.

Adelaide, as we really saw an opportunity to be part of the rapidly developing scene here! We think Kiin can become a unique part of the local foodscape,” says Ben.

On the menu is Ben’s take on classic Thai dishes but with innovative flavours that aren’t comparable to anything else in Adelaide right now. Hungry diners can enjoy a prawn and lychee pop stick with chilli sugar-salt; or burrata with green nahm jim, fried shallot and roti, in the relaxed atmosphere of the Angas Street restaurant. “Dining with us isn’t just about food and service — it’s more of an immersive and memorable experience that people will remember and talk about,” David says.

For a tasty drop to round out your meal, you’ll be thrilled to know that the wine list has been expertly curated to match the menu and features wines from boutique local producers and Europe. “We don’t sell wines from anywhere else in Australia besides SA, as we want to acknowledge how diverse and incredible the industry is down here,” David explains.

Svago Cucina Artigiani Italiani

Svago Cucina Artigiani Italiani on Unley Road gives you the opportunity to eat classic Italian food with a modern twist. It’s a truly Italian artisan kitchen, which allows the team to create unique foods while keeping their traditions alive.

At Svago, it’s all about keeping it real and sticking to handmade recipes that have been passed down for generations. Their pasta is all made in-house, and their pizza dough rests for 48 to 72 hours, creating a light and easily digestible dough. And then, the goods are paired with perfect flavours. “Our head chef has extensive culinary experience — he’s got some incredible dishes up his sleeve!” says the owner, Nancy.

The menu celebrates fresh produce that speaks for itself — whether that’s locally caught fish or a simple, fresh tomato sauce, the ingredients will sing. The spaghetti frutti de mare is a great

example, filled with calamari, prawns, vongole, mussels, cherry tomatoes, lobster bisque, chilli and finished with bottarga (a cured grey mullet roe). And that’s just the beginning! Our eyes lit up at the risotto funghi with porcini and swiss brown mushrooms, parsley, parmesan, fontina cheese and a drizzle of truffle oil, and we did a little dance when we saw tiramisu on the menu.

Whether you’re looking for a dinner party with expertly crafted specialty cocktails at Svago (a venue that caters for up to 120 people), or you’d like them to feed your next function at home, these guys are ready to serve you a taste of Italy.

Bandit Pizza & Wine

Bandit Pizza & Wine, sibling venue to Anchovy Bandit, has taken the best parts of what made the original Prospect venue iconic, and has transformed it into an entirely new iteration on Unley Road. With a menu centred around a custom-made hearth and wood fired oven, the distinct charred scent is unparalleled and totally inviting.

Executive Chef and CoOwner Shane Wilson champions seasonality in the menu, with the support of Head Chef Antonino Pruner. They mix things up often, giving diners a unique and memorable dining experience to be savoured every time.

Naturally, pizza features on the menu, but it’s the dishes with inspired combinations, such as the grilled Pacific oysters with seaweed butter, and the tiger prawns with native curry butter and grilled lime, that really set Bandit Pizza & Wine apart. Wash down each bite with a pick from their wine list, which is filled with hard-to-find drops that the team has kept tucked away in their cellar since 2019. Expect to find wines from some of the best local producers, as well as the occasional Barolo for good measure — all without the stuffy service that can come with wine culture. We’ll drink to that!

Home is a historic factory, which they’ve decked out to make it ultra Instagrammable (hello, indoor swings!), which sets the scene for their flavoursome meals and delightful drinks. 30 Acres

From brunch and business meetings to romance and feasting, 30 Acres does it all! And it all started with a dream.

“We live in the Adelaide Hills and always wanted to open a modern Australian eatery, sourcing products right from our back door. So, we created 30 Acres on The Parade, where our chefs, bakers and bartenders take local and seasonal produce and turn it into an experience for the whole family. Our small farm even provides the stone fruit and some of the vegetables for the restaurant!” says Alex, Co-Owner of 30 Acres with their partner Rik.

The walls of this beautiful space are lined with local wine, loaves of fresh bread, condiments, pottery and more. Each and every detail has been considered, and this is reflected in their menu. Order off the all-day menu or their

dinner menu, and you’re in for a treat!

Some of the mouth-watering options include the breakfast coconut, chickpea and lentil curry with fried potatoes, mango chutney, green sauce, yoghurt, poached egg and tarka; the avocado and Woodside chèvre on toasted rye with honey-spiced seeds, roasted pumpkin and a poached egg; or the chargrilled saltbush lamb rump with burnt cabbage puree, pickled currants, pepitas and honey fermented radicchio. So exotic!

The drinks menu boasts bubbling cocktails, housemade sodas (that pair nicely with gin!), hundreds of wines, as well as coffee and tea. There’s definitely something for everyone!

Raise your glass to Santalini’s new sparkling!

The last few years have seen a spike in the alcohol-free and alcohollimited movement. Whether it’s for your physical or mental health, you’re trying to conceive or are currently expecting, or just because you want to take on the challenge of cutting alcohol out of your life, more and more people are choosing to be sober-curious.

That doesn’t mean you need to miss out, though, when new bottles of bubbly (with a twist) are landing on a shelf near you. Santalini is an all new, nonalcoholic sparkling grape juice, offering two different blends. Sip smugly on their Golden Muscatel Sparkling Grape Juice or Red Sparkling Grape Juice, knowing that you can indulge all you want — without that dreaded hangover in the morning.

The grapes used to create Santalini are sourced from some of South Australia’s prime regions (including the beautiful Barossa) before being squished and squashed, then bottled up to promote the natural flavours and floral notes of the grapes at their peak. What you end up with is a delightfully fruity glass of fizz without the booze.

No need to make an extra stop-off at the bottle-o on your drive home either, because you’ll find Santalini in your local Romeo’s supermarket — how’s that for convenience! A glass of Santalini sparkling is best served chilled, but we’ve got a couple of other ideas to really make this fresh new drink sing.

A FRUITY TWIST

Use Santalini to create a non-alcoholic mimosa or bellini by adding a generous splash of either orange or peach juice to your glass of Golden Muscatel Sparkling Grape Juice.

SOBER SANGRIA

Create this sangria-style punch for your next alcohol-free event by combining Santalini’s Red Sparkling Grape Juice, orange juice, a touch of brown sugar, plenty of ice, and garnish with chopped apple and fresh orange slices. It’s great for baby showers!

Dipping your toe into a sober lifestyle doesn’t need to mean missing out altogether — it’s fabulous to see local businesses finding solutions for people to live as the best version of themselves. Bravo, Santalini.

Long lunches, after work cocktails or a Saturday night groove — we have a couple of hot venues in mind!

If you’ve got your finger on the pulse of Adelaide’s bar scene, there’s no doubt you’ve already paid a visit to these pumping places — Lady Burra Brewhouse and BCKYRD.

There’s a reason that these venues are unique, vibrant and offer something for every kind of person to enjoy — they’re both a product of love from the Kidd Retail Group. These guys know how to create the ultimate vibe, so let’s take a deep dive into what makes these party places shine.

A BREW OR TWO AT LADY BURRA

You know this team thinks outside of the box, given that they created Adelaide’s first full-blown microbrewery in the middle of the CBD! But what they’ve got to offer is oh-so-much more than beer.

Lady Burra is a huge space in Topham Mall, with a capacity for 300 people to eat, drink and be merry. You can book the entire venue out for an event (epic!),

or you can pop in any day of the week for a bite to eat and a drink with your mates. The relaxed atmosphere makes it perfect for those long lunches, and during the week you’ll be chuffed to find some fab food specials. Prepare your tastebuds for traditional brewhouse fare, with a Portuguese twist! The Lady Burra chip paddle is a fun option to share, and the pizzas are amazing — but personally, we can’t go past the paella, it’s just too good!

For those who enjoy a drink, there are plenty of local SA wines to choose from, and the Lady Burra cocktails are incredible — choose from fruity, tangy or sweet flavours, ready to match your mood. And back to those beers for a jiffy, you can sample a few cold brews with the beer paddle or just reach for your favourite once again.

DRINK: LADY BURRA BREWHOUSE + BCKYRD ADELAIDE’S FIRST FULL BLOWN MICROBREWERY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CBD!

If you’re hunting for a taste of Lady Burra Brewhouse at home too, big news — you can now buy up big and take a few brewskis home with you, thanks to the brand new canning line that they launched in late 2022.

Most importantly, Lady Burra is oozing with good vibes. You can choose to sit inside and share the space with their famous mural and open wooden bar; take in the city in the outdoor area with cocktail in hand; or head to the slightly moodier side room for the DJ and some dancing on a Friday and Saturday night. Whatever your choice, Lady Burra is always up for a good time.

BCKYRD

A backyard barbecue party in the middle of Peel Street? Genius! We once heard the story of a man who followed the smell of cooking sausages all the way from North Terrace just to end up at BCKYRD for a classic snag in bread at midnight. Now, that’s what BCKYRD is all about!

This laid-back venue is open from Thursday to Sunday, and you’re set to have the very best of times. The food offering is classic, with things like

barbecued skewers and share platters on the menu. And trust us, when it’s late and you’ve been on the party train for a while, it really helps to keep the options simple and utterly delicious.

For the bevvy lovers, there are plenty of cocktails, wines, the latest and greatest seltzer range available, and Lady Burra beers on tap, and this indoor-outdoor space lets you drink it up in the sunshine, under the city lights or inside where the tunes are. If you’ve got the moves, get ready to groove, with a big dance floor and a great DJ laying down the tracks.

And why not throw a party at BCKYRD, like we did? Our Adelady party went off with a bang — this venue can fit 120 people for an intimate and easy-going vibe.

A nod to the Originals

Sometimes, looking back at the original plan can show just how far you’ve come.

That’s exactly the case for Limestone Coast based winery, Wangolina. In 2023, they’re celebrating 21 years of their cellar door and a huge 100 years on their beautiful property. And while all those years have been filled with exciting new plans, experimental varieties and some serious gusto from head winemaker Anita Goode, this year, they’re choosing to take a step back in time to revisit the Originals.

The Originals wine range is dedicated to the varieties that were first planted in the vineyard in 1999. “The range represents the place where we started our winemaking journey, and it’s about acknowledging the past. All the grapes for this range are grown solely in our

vineyard at Mount Benson and were chosen as they suited the climate and were grapes that we could shape into wines that we love,” Anita says.

So, what can we expect from these delightful drops? “The Originals Sauvignon Blanc gives a tropical burst of fruit, with a grassy edge. The Originals Syrah is a contemporary style red that’s bright, perfumed and fresh, with savoury tannins and minerality. The Originals Cabernet is a 'modern' expression that’s the perfect wine for a Sunday roast. And we have the Originals Semillon — it’s zingy, textural and made using my favourite grape,” Anita says, bursting with well-deserved pride.

Go get it, girl

Shiny and new

2023 sees the introduction of Wangolina’s brand new winery!

The 2023 vintage will be the first grapes crushed in their very own facility. Having her own facility means that Anita can experiment more than ever before. “My goal is to create wines that truly speak to their variety. I’m aiming for clean and fresh, with an undeniable vibrance.” And there’s not a doubt in our mind that’s what we’ll get with Anita behind the wheel!

Now is the time to visit Wangolina’s Cellar Door and stock up on the goods. You’ll gain a well-rounded understanding of just how far this winery has come.

Not only is Anita an amazing winemaker, she’s a fourthgeneration Wangolina farm girl who now owns 700 acres of land that surrounds the vineyard. “I feel so privileged to be able to work on the land in the footsteps of my family, and alongside my dad, John — he provides so much wisdom and support,” says Anita. Wangolina has 11.5 hectares of vines that are managed and maintained by Anita, but she’s certainly not sticking to the status quo. Instead, Anita’s constantly dabbling in different winemaking experiments, introducing new varieties and looking into the future. “We’re always looking at varieties that are more suited to our climate, require lower vineyard inputs and need minimal intervention, which aligns with our values and ethos.”

For some people, it’s diamonds — for others, curtains are forever!

Good style never goes out of fashion — something I Design Decor’s owner, Janet Goldner, knows to be true. And for Janet, one thing you shouldn’t underestimate is the power of a good set of custom-made curtains.

Specialising in window treatments and soft furnishings for your home or workplace, Janet wants you to forget just throwing up any old thing for insulation and privacy — it’s time to look at the whole picture. “I studied Visual and

Commercial Art and completed my apprenticeship in Hairdressing before advancing into Interior Decoration and finding my creative passion, giving me over 27 years’ experience in the industry.”

Janet is so passionate about how she can transform a space, that she’s poured her heart into dressing your windows to perfection. We’re not talking the premade ones that line the shelves of chain homeware stores and all look drearily the same. It’s time to look at curtains, blinds, shutters and awnings in a whole new light. Pull back your peepers to the kaleidoscope of textures, dimension and colour.

“Some people are afraid of colour or don’t know how to introduce it stylishly without overwhelming a space. Over the years, I’ve seen many homes decorated in all white or touches of black, and they’re missing something. A touch of texture and colour in your window dressings can make a room really pop and give it a cosier atmosphere,” Janet explains.

It’s not just colour or texture, but a sense of luxury that can be created with fabrics. “How many of us stay in a hotel and love the luxurious feeling but don’t know how to create that at home? Quality soft furnishings like curtains can give you that luxe feeling every day.”

And forget the days of tugging on drawstrings — or worse, putting potentially dirty hands on the fabric to

Janet will make sure your creative vision will last for years to come. “We only use quality decor and design products, all backed by professional installation, so it’s a long-term investment in your space.”

Janet’s got plenty of ideas and can visualise what will work, but you won’t be pushed into something you don’t love. “It’s about thinking outside the box, but I want every client to love the result, so I make sure the suggestions complement their overall sense of style, not just cover a window. Joining forces never looked so good.

You may have heard of WOODCUT. You may have heard of Signorino. And now, these two powerhouses have joined forces right here in Adelaide to create the WOODCUT & Signorino showroom — with WOODCUT’s incredible engineered timber flooring, and Signorino’s Italian porcelain, stone, terrazzo and tiles all on display.

If you’re deep in renovation land or have always dreamed of a doer-upper, this new space on Unley Road is going to whiz you straight to heaven. Having worked together in the past, these premium brands have created some interior design dreams, so you can visualise how to bring your home to life. WOODCUT’s flooring perfectly complements Signorino’s sophisticated stonework — just one look will have you scrapping any building plans without them both.

Not to mention the utter convenience of picking out all your favourite colours and textures in the same place! The new

Adelaide showroom, which opened in 2022, makes it easy-peasy for even the most inexperienced home designer to pick and pair different flooring and stonework options, whether they’re for a bathroom, kitchen or living space. The experienced showroom consultants are well versed in both brands and love to talk about your project and design plans — plus, they’re pros at working to any budget.

In case we haven’t twisted your arm into paying WOODCUT & Signorino a visit yet, a picture paints a thousand words… why not take a peek at some of the beautiful designs that these visionaries have crafted on the website.

What to expect when expecting

Congratulations, you’re having a baby!

You might be one of the lucky ones with glowing skin that everyone dreams of. Or, you might be like the rest of us and experience severe discolouration, skin tags, varicose veins and breakouts — or bacne as I was “lucky” enough to endure. “Have a baby,” they said… right?!

When you’re fortunate enough to fall pregnant, you experience all sorts of changes in your body, both inside and

outside — and yes, it’s all worth it — but between all the extra estrogen and progesterone, hormonal fluctuations can cause your skin to do some crazy things. Fear not, though, most of these “horror” skin conditions can be treated and do tend to go away sometime after your baby is born — you might just need a helping hand — and thankfully, we have Rose.

Dermal Therapist and Director of Elixir

Skin Fitness in Adelaide, Rose Bonasara has been working in the skin health industry for more than twenty years. Treating preteens right through to golden oldies, she knows skin better than anyone.

Over to you Rose!

What happens to your skin when you fall pregnant?

Pregnancy can affect skin in so many ways. Some women have beautiful skin their whole lives — and all of a sudden, they fall pregnant and end up with acne. Other women get melasma pigmentation stimulated by hormones, also known as a “pregnancy mask”, which is a difficult condition to treat because there isn’t a lot you can do about it while pregnant. When you’re pregnant, your skin barrier changes significantly, so all of a sudden, your products might not be working anymore and your skin can become reactive, dry and irritated. And because every woman's experience is different, pregnancy skincare and treatments need to be tailored to the individual.

Why do some people glow and others don’t?

It’s just luck of the draw, unfortunately! Different skin conditions can flare up out of the blue from the skin’s extra oil production due to all those new hormones, which can then lead to changes in your skin’s microbiome.

HORMONAL FLUCTUATIONS CAN CAUSE YOUR SKIN TO DO SOME CRAZY THINGS.

SKIN IS UNPREDICTABLE IN THE WAY IT REACTS TO CERTAIN TREATMENTS WHEN PREGNANT, SO THERE ARE CERTAIN THINGS YOU SHOULD AVOID WHILE THE BUN IS IN THE OVEN.

Are there treatments to avoid while up the duff?

Yes. Skin is unpredictable in the way it reacts to certain treatments when pregnant, so there are certain things you should avoid while the bun is in the oven.

Light-based devices, like Laser and Omnilux, are generally avoided. However, with approval from your doctor, I can use the Omnilux infrared wavelength to manage irritation and extreme inflammation.

Certain peels that have actives like AHA and BHA’s are generally avoided, but in saying that, there are some you can use during pregnancy that can be positive — I just always need to assess your skin first.

Research shows that Vitamin A consumed topically and orally during

pregnancy can cause congenital birth abnormalities. So, if you’re pregnant, I’d remove Vitamin A and C from your skincare regime. Even though it’s a minuscule amount when taken topically, we can’t guarantee it won’t be absorbed into the bloodstream, and I always prefer to err on the side of caution. However, the good news is there are alternatives! Bacatual Pectas is a plantbased alternative to things like Vitamin A and Retinol, so you can still manage conditions like acne safely.

Sunscreen is still very important during pregnancy, as your skin is a lot more reactive to certain things, like the sun. Just avoid chemical based sunscreens, as they can irritate the skin.

The great news is once you finish breastfeeding, you can re-introduce

certain actives and procedures and treat the skin again as normal.

And trust me, I’m a mum of three beautiful grown-up children, the skin horror stories are all worth it when you look at your gorgeous babies!

There’s nobody like Rose in the skin biz. Pop in and meet her at Elixir Skin Fitness, Norwood Parade, Beulah Park.

Your experience and results may vary. Always consult your medical professional for advice on what’s best for you.

There are nail bars… and then, there’s The Nail Bar & Beauty Co.

As well as being the official Adelady manicurist, The Nail Bar (as we affectionately call it) has the upper hand when it comes to quality and luxury. From classic mani-pedis to intricate nail art designs, The Nail Bar provides high quality services in a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere.

It’s so convenient — there are six salons across SA — and behind them all is one very special woman. A quiet achiever with multiple businesses under her belt, Saland Nguyen has paved the way for women in business all over SA. In 2018, Saland set out to create something with mental and physical empowerment at its core.

Self-love and acceptance became the mantra behind her first nail salon in Murray Bridge, and the word spread quickly. With loyal customers all over South Australia heading for the hills, it only made sense to make The Nail Bar experience more accessible, with five more salons opening their doors — Adelaide Central Plaza, Norwood, Edwardstown, Port Pirie and newbie, Hendon.

Round, square, stiletto or almond?

We’re referring to the nail-biting decision of picking your perfect nail shape. The Nail Bar offers an extensive menu of services, including classic and deluxe manicures and pedicures, gel polish applications, and you can unleash your inner nail diva with intricate nail art designs. “We want everyone to feel comfortable expressing themselves through their nails. Nail art has become so popular, and we absolutely love seeing our work being flashed all over social media as you proudly show off your hands and feet,” says Saland.

All the feels

If a relaxing and calm environment is your vibe, then you'll love sinking into your massage chair, taking deep breaths and gathering your thoughts while your hands and feet are getting some much needed TLC.

Take as much time as you need, and when you step out that door, you should be beaming from ear to ear with confidence to take on whatever the day throws at you. “We want our clients to leave our salons not only looking beautiful, but feeling beautiful too.”

Pop into any of the six salons and you're likely to see one of our pineapple team getting her groove on.

sas has your back

games, artwork, notebooks, grooming kits, handkerchiefs, socks, sunglasses and even a dedicated Man Corner. And that barely scratches the surface!

The gifts that keep on giving

You might recognise the name sas by rovina from its days as a pop-up in the middle of Pasadena Shopping Centre. But now, it’s gone bricks-and-mortar in the same location, creating more room to showcase their endless gift options. Don’t worry if you live on the other side of town though — sas also has an online store that’s exploding with beautiful pieces.

When we say gift shop, we don’t just mean trinkets and knick-knacks — though, they’ve got them, too! There are thousands of items that have each been carefully chosen — and where possible, the products up for grabs are Australian made or designed. We’re talking homewares, accessories, fashion,

The gal behind the gifts, Sandra Rovina is in tune with the shoppers that walk through her doors. “We want to be that one shop you can walk into and find the perfect present, every time,” says Sandra.

Sandra has even taught her team how to ask the (sometimes tricky) questions to establish which gift might be right. “If you need a hand, we’ll guide you with questions around budget, age, or how well you know and like the person you’re buying for!”

And it’s the little things that make the biggest impact, with free gift wrapping available with every instore or online purchase. “We want the gift giver to feel like they’ve made an effort, and the receiver to feel extra special! We wrap the gift and add a little sweet, so you don’t just feel like you’ve visited a shop, but had a real experience,” says Sandra.

sas by rovina is open seven days a week, with extended opening hours on Thursdays and Fridays, which is very handy for those last minute shoppers! So, if you’re scratching your head, wondering what to buy that special person in your life, pay sas a visit — the answer is sitting on their shelves.

Some gifts hold extra meaning, depending on where they’ve come from. We asked Sandra to share some of her favourite items that never go out of style.

• Western Australian company Red Fox Sox make socks from bamboo, with designs created by young people from all over the world, making them extra unique.

• Jewellery company Jinja is owned by designer Joy — an Adeladian who has lived in Indonesia for 27 years. She sells local creations and then uses the profits to support the local community.

• We have a huge range of products created by the Indigenous community — and all the royalties go straight back to the artist and their community. Some of my favourites include Alperstein, Utopia, and Mainie.

henley general is taking you from beachwear to the bar.

For Matty and Zenna Mammone, Henley is more than just a beautiful beach — it’s also their family’s home and now, the heart of their brand new clothing brand.

henley general started as many great businesses do — with a gap in the market and a business plan in the living room. “We think the Henley coastline is just amazing and started to notice that Henley Beach wasn’t really represented through clothing. Plus, my husband Matty didn’t have anything to wear straight from the

beach to the bar, so we thought, ‘Let’s create it ourselves!’” Zenna says.

“Our dream is to help everyone celebrate beach life. Whether that's chilling with family and friends, or playing with the kids and walking the dog. Beach life has so much to offer, and to us, the journey starts with good quality and comfortable clothing,” says Matty.

Matty, who’s also the owner and director of the couple’s engineering firm, is discovering his inner fashionista, and the first few designs came easily. “We started off just designing the clothes that we’d love to wear — as long as they were high quality, a little bit luxe, liveable and represented beach life, we were happy.”

After launching their first release at the Henley Square Market and online,

the range has exploded to include men’s and women’s t-shirts, towels, hats, a kids range, matching linen sets, beautiful dresses, and 100 percent preshrunk cotton oversized beach bags that can be thrown straight in the wash — with plenty of new ideas also in the pipeline. It’s hard to believe this booming business isn’t even a year old!

With community at the heart of it all, it’s no surprise that the locals are snapping up the goods — we’ve even heard rumours that henley general is set to be stocked in other retail stores soon, so keep your eyes peeled and your wallet ready!

It was the first ever rent-a-rack market in Australia, and half a decade on, Mekko Market has morphed into a thriving and vibrant community.

89 Prospect Road has become a beehive of activity with lovers of slow-fashion, cocktails and Scandinavian-inspired food.

Just when you think you’ve struck cafe gold with Mekko’s mouth-watering brekkies and lunches flowing out of the kitchen, you realise that your new happy place also doubles as a sustainable fashion market!

“This is why people pop in for one drink and end up staying all day — they meet their friends, have coffee, stay for a delicious lunch, do a bit of shopping and then have a cocktail in the arvo,” says owner Irene.

Perhaps one of the most special things about Mekko Market is the sense of community that fills the space. It’s not uncommon to see friends and neighbours having a LOL over a drink. “It’s a place where people come together to celebrate creativity, culture and community.”

This guarantees an ever-expanding selection of great quality clothes in various styles and sizes.”

to Australia from Finland and couldn’t believe that it wasn't a thing here, given the concept is so popular in Europe. So, she started the trend herself, with Tom stepping into the role of head chef.

The fashion market is full of good quality, pre-loved clothes, shoes, bags and jewellery, with locals selling their wares to make some extra cash. It’s easy to have your own rack too, with 100 percent of the profits going back to the seller. You simply rent a rack, price up your garments and Mekko sells them for you.

Wearable art

WORDS Hayley Pearson

And then, there was colour!

Meet Hayley and Tammy — besties, business partners and the fabulous founders of one of the country's most successful handbag brands, Willow Bay Australia.

Famous for their neoprene tote bags, the girls keep the “oh wows” coming with their signature cross body bags, duffle bags, nappy bags, gym bags, travel bags and laptop bags. These down-to-earth Adelaide based mama bears have taken SA to the world, with their accessories proving super popular in Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and America.

If you have a Willow Bay at home, then you know the quality of their products is impeccable. Having perfected the style and fabric, Hayley and Tammy are always looking for ways to grow their brand and lucky for me, colour was on the horizon.

“We adore art and love the idea of creating wearable art, handpainted by a local artist. It took a long time and many prototypes before we found the perfect

medium for brightness in colour, longevity and wearability,” says Tammy.

And just like that, I’ve become part of the Willow Bay Australia story… say hello to the Art Gallery Collection! In late 2022, the girls pressed GO on an exclusive one-of-a-kind handpainted collection of Willow Bay bags.

“Each piece is unique and has its own personality. It’s something very special for people to be able to wear a piece of art (not just hang it on their walls), and it’s been extremely well received, with each drop selling out in hours. Plus, each piece comes with a certificate to authenticate the originality of the bag and free gift wrapping,” says Hayley.

“WE ADORE ART AND LOVE THE IDEA OF CREATING WEARABLE ART, HANDPAINTED BY A LOCAL ARTIST.”

Putting paintbrush to neoprene, I’ve been fortunate enough to be their first resident artist with the ‘Hayley Pearson x Willow Bay Collection’ going live a few months ago. It’s brought me so much joy splashing my neons and pastels all over these gorgeous bags — and then seeing people wearing them on the streets of Adelaide, well, that’s just incredible! Creating original pieces of art on a handbag brand I’ve loved since its inception is a dream come true. They’re sold exclusively online with new drops every month — I better get busy painting!

Unleashing Unley Road’s newest bar… with a twist!

You see, this is not your usual “I’ll have a G & T, please!” bar. This bar doubles up as a hair salon. Say what?!

Blow Out Style & Bar specialises in gram-worthy blow-drys and hair styling while also serving up scrumptious bubbles, cocktails, mocktails, wine, tea and coffee. The only way this new biz could get better in my books is if someone was massaging my feet at the same time.

Inside, it’s all chic and glamour. The music is pumping and the stylists buzz

around making you feel right at home, which is exactly what owner Michelle was aiming for.

“The whole concept came about after nine years of being at home with the kids, and like lots of mums, all I dreamed about was going to a hair salon where I could get a fresh blow-dry and a glass of bubbles at the same time,” Michelle explains. “We want to provide women with an hour where we look after you, instead of you doing the looking after.”

But it’s not just their styling skills that make the Blow Out Style & Bar a cut above the rest. Their menu of services is packed with add ons and extra treats that will leave you with options galore. Whether you’re in the mood for a bouncy Farrah Fawcett wave or a sleek and sophisticated up-do, they’ll make you feel like a million bucks.

They also offer all the extras, including extra-long head massages and specialised hair treatments. Michelle and her awesome team want to treat you to an hour of indulgence and leave you looking and feeling good!

And it gets better — light snacks are on the ever-changing menu. “My background is hospitality, so my role is to be behind the bar, serving our wonderful clients coffee, juices, cocktails, toasted croissants and little platters.”

The Blow Out Style & Bar is a double whammy. Shall we see you at the bar? We’ll be the ones dancing in the windows.

Arcade Cobblers & Locksmiths

These clever cats can fix your special pair of shoes, handbags, resize your watch and custom-make leather belts, plus they have a great range of giftware. More than just an iconic landmark off Rundle Mall, Adelaide Arcade is a place where creatives and art unite to give South Australians a shopping experience that celebrates local artisans and makers, sustainability, quality, and one-of-a-kind beauties.

Exception-oil

WORDS Em Worthington

When it comes to what we put onto our skin and into our bodies, we’ll always opt for natural. Luckily, Vasse Virgin makes it delightfully easy!

This family-owned business uses all natural ingredients to produce their small batch skincare and gourmet food ranges. And best of all, trying them out is a slippery slope straight into indulgence at their award-winning and historic venue in the Barossa. You can test, taste, watch and create, with options to get hands-on in their DIY workshops in perfumery, lip balms (my daughter’s dream day!), olive oil masterclasses and more. They’re perfect for all ages and we guarantee you’ll never look at olive oil the same way again!

Say what?

Many of us have only considered splashing extra virgin olive oil on our salads or roast veggies. But when you get your mitts on the highest quality form of olive oil, you’ll find it actually comes laden with therapeutic qualities that are a godsend for sensitive skin.

When Vasse Virgin owners Louis and Edwina Scherini’s three young-ins were diagnosed with eczema, soap or shampoo off the shelf became their enemy. And so began their mission to create a soap bar using a traditional cold process method to nurture and rejuvenate their bubbas’ skin.

At the heart of all their products, extra virgin olive oil forms a base ingredient that’s mild and gentle on sensitive skin while offering a little luxe — and who doesn’t deserve a touch of ooh-la-la each day! Add a dab of plant extracts and a trickle of essential oils, and you’ve got yourself a gorgeously pure product, just as nature intended.

Fast forward twenty years down the track and now, we can all enjoy these

game-changing products made on site in the Vasse Virgin factories in Seppeltsfield, South Australia, and Wilyabrup, Western Australia — or sample their gourmet food range including olives (of course!), extra virgin olive oils, balsamic vinegars and fruit vinaigrettes and a spread of delicious condiments all made by a dedicated chef.

Whether you’re there to treat your skin, your nose or your tummy, the Vasse Virgin team love helping you discover their line-up, and they have the knowhow to customise it to suit a huge range of ailments. Make a day of it and head to the Barossa to get your shine on with a touch of Mama Nature’s magic.
