Welcome Following a highly successful 2015, ASO is very proud to offer a further expanded and richly diverse program of creative and participatory projects for schools and students in 2016. The two week ASO Festival of Learning & Participation will be led by highly charismatic composer and educator Paul Rissmann as he returns to Adelaide with all-new programs. We are thrilled to be collaborating with Adelaide Youth Orchestras to present The Petrushka Project as part of the festival. This feature project will see 30 young musicians working together with Paul Rissmann and ASO players over a week-long program of creative workshops. The project will culminate in a performance involving the student creative ensemble and 80 ASO musicians performing together on stage.

Our suite of touring performances continues to grow, including three unique programs All Aboard!, The Bush Concert, and MOTIF8. We also launch a brand new open rehearsal program Rehearsals Unwrapped for secondary students, as well as a specially devised in-school creative project for Year 8-10 classes, The Petrushka Project for Schools. Our newly expanded Big Rehearsal and Professional Pathways programs will be offered to selected music students and instrumentalists, providing outstanding performance and career development opportunities for young and emerging artists and educators across South Australia. A new wide-ranging Professional Learning Program will provide educators the chance to work with local and international artist-educators, including Richard Gill OAM and Paul Rissmann. We encourage you all to take part in what promises to be our most vibrant Learning Program yet.

ASO Festival of Learning & Participation LED BY PAUL RISSMANN In 2015, ASO made exhilarating music with over 3000 students during our inaugural Festival of Learning and Participation. It is with great excitement that we welcome back internationally acclaimed composer and educator Paul Rissmann. In April 2016, Paul leads an augmented program of school and family concerts, teacher workshops, community events and a cutting-edge creative project.

Award-winning British composer, presenter and music educator Paul Rissmann returns to ASO with a brand new program for primary students. Crazy Creatures features two of Rissmann’s most recent compositions based on the hilarious tales of The Duck with No Luck and a Cat Called Scratch by Jonathan Long, illustrated by Korky Paul and published by Oxford University Press. These fun-filled stories are brought to life with a colourful score, participatory songs and actions, and delightful imagery projected onto a screen above the orchestra. 30 selected instrumental music students will come together for a week-long creative program to work with internationally acclaimed composer and educator Paul Rissmann and to be mentored by ASO players. Inspired by Igor Stravinsky's groundbreaking composition, the project will culminate in a finale concert featuring the student ensemble, performing their freshly composed music interwoven with the original Petrushka ballet score, with the full forces of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

Looking for an innovative in-school project through which to engage your students in creativity and composition? The Petrushka Project for Schools is a creative project devised by award-winning composer, Paul Rissmann, that aims to challenge students’ thinking as they learn about compositional techniques and devise their own work inspired by Igor Stravinsky's music. Following a Teacher Professional Learning Program in April, registered classes will undertake the project throughout Term 2 and will be encouraged to share their work online with other participating students. All registered classes will be invited to then experience the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra rehearse the original Petrushka score at the Adelaide Town Hall on June 24, conducted by ASO Principal Conductor, Nicholas Carter.

Learn about the unique sounds of the instruments as the musicians perform Mark Simeon Ferguson's enchanting score. In 2016 we offer upper primary school students an outstanding opportunity to work with South Australian composer and jazz violinist Julian Ferraretto in a creative in-school workshop. Focusing on the use of motifs as a musical composition device, these workshops will enable up to three classes to create their own musical ideas, that will later be scored for ASO octet. The newly devised composition will then premiere in a follow-up incursion concert for students in Years 5-7, featuring a program that will highlight the use of motifs by composers throughout history. Western Australian rising star Christopher Dragon conducts a charming program of refined favourites. Schumann’s graceful and expressive Overture, Scherzo and Finale is complemented by Strauss’s final complete composition, the romantic Duet Concertino for clarinet and bassoon. Haydn’s well-loved Symphony No 88, replete with rustic folk themes and cheerful melodies, rounds out the program.

ASO Concertmaster Natsuko Yoshimoto leads her colleagues in perhaps the most charming and beloved of all classical compositions, Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik. This strings-only concert is rounded out by Bartók’s spontaneous Divertimento, a lively 20th century piece with an 18th century spirit.

Are you seeking that added edge to your skills and training? Here’s your chance to go behind the scenes of South Australia’s largest performing arts organisation. Join us at the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra for a year-long program of diverse career development opportunities. In 2016 we invite young and emerging musicians to immerse themselves in ASO Professional Pathways program which aims to inspire, nurture and open doors to a creative future. Music Leadership Develop your music leadership and presentation skills through involvement in the ASO learning and community programs. Performance Experience what it is like to play in a professional symphony orchestra and develop your orchestral and creative ensemble skills in the ASO Big Rehearsals and/or The Petrushka Project (separate application process applies, see pages 15 & 6). Arts Management Hear from members of the ASO Management Team and learn about the diverse administrative and management roles and opportunities within arts organisations.
