he end of the year is for many of us a time of questioning and, more often than not, a time to look back at the challenges we have faced and the achievements we have made.

It is with great pride that we can look back at the accomplishments made which allow us to look forward to a NATO Staff Centre which offers its members a recreational, cultural and sports experience as well as many new community services. For our children, they can experience sports activities such as swimming, tennis or attend the holiday camps.

To enable our members to be informed of all our activities, we have created communication tools such as the www.natostaffcentre.be website. It is in this light that is born the NATO Staff Centre Magazine, of which you hold the very first edition.

Designed for you, but also thanks to you, NATO Staff Centre Magazine is your new quarterly appointment with Staff Centre news, trends and hot spots.

With this magazine, you can have information about travelling abroad as well as locally in Belgium. You will learn about real estate, as well as architectural masterpieces, gastronomy, beauty and wellbeing, fashion, culture, new technologies…

This first issue reflects, within each page, the atmosphere and energy of the festive season.

A cultural evening for Afghan women and children’s benefit.

Une soirée culturelle au profit des femmes et des enfants en Afghanistan.

A

t the initiative of Mrs Anne-Mette Rasmussen, a charitable cultural event was held on 10 October at the NATO Staff Centre.

The wife of NATO’s Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, known for her support for children and women suffering from the war in Afghanistan, welcomed that evening two of her compatriots to share their experience.

Britt Salver, Danish painter, presented a new collection of 50 faces of children, offered in the auction for the benefit of this initiative. «I have worked with children and painting children's faces and know that there is nothing better than to help where children can benefit from it.»

Anne-Cathrine Riebnitzsky, 36 years old, has a very different experience.

Engaged in the civil-military cooperation, she was sent to Helmand in 2007 as an officer. Sensitive to their situation, she made contact with a group of Afghan women. In 2008 she returned to Afghanistan as a civil consultant hired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She spent 14 months there, where she established a centre for women regularly holding major meetings, with up to 70 women. "Many of these women encountered were fully convinced that their lack of rights was simply linked to the nature of women". On 25 March, the story of her experience was published in a book entitled The War of Women.

For many, it was a pleasure to acquire an original artwork knowing that the profits would go to a cause; that of women and children suffering from the war. We would like to thank Mrs Anne-Mette Rasmussen for this evening, for her energy and determination to make a difference; to Mrs Britt Salver for her generosity as well as Mrs Anne-Cathrine Riebnitzsky for having shared her courageous experience with sensitivity and humour.

L’épouse du Secrétaire Général de l'OTAN, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, dont on connaît le combat en faveur des enfants et des femmes qui souffrent de la guerre en Afghanistan, recevait ce soir-là deux de ses compatriotes pour partager leur expérience.

Britt Salver, peintre danoise, présentait une nouvelle collection de 50 visages d’enfants, offerte aux enchères au profit de cette initiative. «J’ai toujours travaillé avec des enfants et peint leur visage. Je sais qu’il n’y a rien de mieux à faire que d’apporter son aide là où les enfants peuvent en bénéficier».

Anne-Cathrine Riebnitzsky, 36 ans, a une expérience très différente. Engagée dans la coopération civilo-militaire, elle fut envoyée à Helmand en 2007 comme officier. Sensible à leur situation, elle établit un contact avec un groupe de femmes afghanes. En 2008 elle retourna en Afghanistan en tant que consultant civil embauchée par le ministère des Affaires étrangères. Elle y passa 14 mois, où elle créa un centre pour femmes tenant régulièrement de grandes réunions, avec jusqu'à 70 femmes. «Beaucoup de ces femmes rencontrées étaient parfaitement convaincues que leur absence de droits était tout simplement lié à leur nature de femmes». Le 25 mars dernier, fut publié le récit de cette expérience dans un livre qui s’intitule La Guerre des Femmes.

«In Russia, Courchevel has become a synonym of excellence, says Christophe Normand, Director of the ESF (ski school), it is a

place blessed by gods.» In this jet set lair, it is not stars but constellations illuminating palaces and restaurants, whose excellence attracts every year number of celebrities and Russian oligarchs. Jumped-up prices, smoke and mirrors or privileged location where luxury emanates from the quality of the services, we conducted the investigation.

Behind the myth

Courchevel 1850 «En Russie, Courchevel est devenu un nom commun, synonyme d’excellence, raconte Christophe Normand, directeur de l’ESF,

c’est un endroit béni des Dieux.» À 1850, le repaire de la jet-set, ce ne sont plus des étoiles mais des constellations qui éclairent palaces et restaurants dont l’éminence attire chaque année nombre d’oligarques et de célébrités. Prix surfaits et poudre aux yeux ou endroit privilégié ou le luxe émane de la qualité des prestations, nous avons mené l’enquête.

o shed light on the true identity of this jewel of the Trois Vallées, the largest ski resort worldwide, we met Nathalie Faure and Julie Cuisinier of Courchevel Tourisme: «When I started here, some members of my own family thought they could never afford a stay in Courchevel, says Nathalie. That is to tell how this image is widespread, especially because of sensational media.» And that is not from yesterday. Already in the 1960s, personalities such as Brigitte Bardot created the reputation of this station designed from scratch in the post-war period. If, at that time, the socio-economic life was at the very opposite of what it is today, the offer quickly developed to meet the requirements of tourists.

Exceptional services…

Well-maintained slopes, irreproachable infrastructure and excellent snow conditions... And yet, nowadays, 15 to 20% of Courchevel’s vacationers don’t ski; Show-off? Not especially, despite generally accepted ideas; looking for a wellness haven, they want to take advantage of a varied leisure offer.

As to gastronomy, the station reaches the summits more than ever. Seven of its restaurants totalise not less than ten prestigious Michelin stars. For those who prefer casual atmospheres to gourmet dishes, the streets of the village are crowded with pubs, cafés and piano bars where to decompress after a well filled day. Excellent examples are Le Café de la Poste, L’Équipe or, down the Praz, La Table de Mon Grand-Père. Season workers and tourists gather around a meal or a drink in a friendly atmosphere.

To relax, with 39 spas, Jacuzzis, swimming pools, whirlpools, countercurrent swimming pools and massage salons, there is something to help you relax at any time of the day. Some institutions, including the famous Palace Les Airelles, even propose yummy and fun treatments for children!

As to the Chabichou, the Rochedy family’s iconic four-star, seven million euros have been invested to build, among others, the Cha’banya; a lavish spa of 1100m2 whose every detail was examined carefully by Hydro Concept: «Our faithful clients wanted a swimming pool, explains Michel Rochedy, the owner. «And a gentleman who buys everything in Courchevel wanted to do a nightclub with the adjacent land, that cannot be bought because there is a slope just above, so we rented it over 95 years to build the bistro Le Chabotté, which will be open every day of the year.» Other innovation, the Annapurna hotel opens this winter the first heated outdoor pool of the resort, exquisite pleasure after an eventful day. Located near the airport, the landscape is simply majestic and, at dusk, swimming under the firmament is part of these rare but divine luxuries.

… and privileged location

Skiing remains by far the number one activity in the resort, with a total of 1000 multilingual instructors. Christophe Normand, Director of the ski school (ESF), insists: «A monitor who doesn’t speak English can’t work here.

The ideal being to speak three or four languages. The main challenge is to stick to the reality of the resort and be up to the services offered in Courchevel.

Here, regardless of the hotel, you are on the slopes. The offer is quite varied, the constant being the guarantee of good quality wherever you are.» And since there is no age for skiing, the director, who’s been working at ESF for six years, has introduced an innovative concept; the «BB Ski». Established to discover the joys of skiing to toddlers from 18 months old in private lessons, the initiative has been very successful since its creation three years ago.

The resort tries to reconnect with sport, despite the image given to us in France.

our faire toute la lumière sur la véritable identité de ce joyau des Trois Vallées, plus grand domaine skiable au monde, rendezvous avec Nathalie Faure et Julie Cuisinier, de Courchevel Tourisme : «Quand j’ai débuté ici, des membres de ma propre famille croyaient ne jamais pouvoir se payer un séjour à Courchevel, raconte Nathalie. C’est dire à quel point cette image est répandue, notamment à cause des médias à sensations.» Image qui ne date pas d’hier; déjà dans les années soixante, des personnalités comme Brigitte Bardot créèrent la réputation de cette station conçue de toute pièce à l’après-guerre. Si à cette époque la vie socio-économique était aux antipodes de ce qu’elle est aujourd’hui, l’offre s’est pourtant rapidement développée pour répondre aux exigences des touristes.

Prestations exceptionnelles…

Des pistes bien entretenues, une infrastructure irréprochable et d’excellentes conditions de glisse… et pourtant, Courchevel accueille à l’heure actuelle 15 à 20% de vacanciers qui ne skient pas.

Besides, a plethora of complementary activities allow international customers to entertain themselves. For the small ones, the Forum offers a variety of indoor activities: ice skating, adventure trail, Tarzan liana, climbing, bowling… In exterior, a 2 km long red sledging trail has been built.

For the most adventurous, the station offers all kinds of thrilling activities such as ice cascades climbing, free-fall ride initiation, paragliding and hang gliding. With a 23 km track, mechanical sports enthusiasts also have the opportunity to discover the joys of driving on snow with scooters, quads, or snowmobile, once the ski area closed.

PRACTICAL INFOS Getting there From Brussels, Geneva (140km) and Lyon Saint-Exupery (200km) are the closest international airports. If the flight lasts only about one hour, count two more to be on time at the airport plus two after arrival to reach the station, no matter where you land.

During the winter, there’s a direct train from Brussels to Moûtiers (the closest town, approximately 25km from Courchevel), which takes about nine hours.

Fan of the outdoor but rather sedentary? The more contemplatives can admire Courchevel from the sky in hot-air balloon, helicopter or plane. For art lovers, a monumental sculptures exhibition is set to admire the work of the best contemporary artists, including Roméo Britto, Mel Ramos and Robert Mars. The station has also nine routes for snowshoes and 17 km of marked paths and well maintained trails for hiking, cross-country skiing or dog mushing. To conclude, what to say except that there still is, in Courchevel, a real dedication to a quality of services in agreement with the expectations of an increasingly demanding clientele? The last word undeniably belongs to Chef Michel Rochedy, master of the Palace of the heart and sincere friendships, incarnation of the place’s soul: «We do everything we can so that there is a soul and that it remains. The current mayor has a lot to do, but we remain confident nevertheless.»

Côté gastronomie, la station tutoie plus que jamais les sommets. Sept de ses restaurants, tenus par des pointures de la cuisine, ne totalisent pas moins de dix étoiles au prestigieux Guide Michelin. Pour ceux qui privilégient les atmosphères décontractées aux plats gastronomiques, les rues du village sont bondées de bistrots à l’ancienne, pubs, cafés et piano bars où se retrouver pour décompresser après une journée bien remplie. Le Café de la Poste, l’Équipe ou, en descendant vers le Praz, La Table de Mon GrandPère en sont d’excellents exemples. Saisonniers et touristes s’y côtoient pour casser la croûte ou boire un verre dans une atmosphère bon enfant.

Question bien-être, avec 39 spas, des jacuzzis, piscines à remous, bassins de nage à contrecourant et salons de massages, il y a de quoi se faire chouchouter à toute heure de la journée.

Quelques établissements, dont le fameux Cheval Blanc du groupe LVMH, proposent même des soins gourmands et rigolos pour enfants! Quant au Chabichou, quatre étoiles emblématique de la famille Rochedy, sept millions d’euros y ont été investis, notamment pour construire le Cha’banya, un somptueux spa de 1100m2 dont les moindres détails ont été examinés avec soin par la société Hydro Concept: «les bons clients réclamaient une piscine, explique Michel Rochedy, le propriétaire. Et un monsieur qui achète tout à Courchevel voulait faire une boite de nuit avec le terrain adjacent, qu’on ne peut pas acheter car il y a une piste juste au-dessus, donc on l’a loué sur 95 ans pour faire le Chabotté, qui sera ouvert tous les jours de l’année.» Autre nouveauté, l’hôtel Annapurna inaugure cet hiver la première piscine extérieure chauffée de la station, plaisir exquis après une journée mouvementée. Situé près de l’altiport, le paysage y est tout simplement majestueux et, au crépuscule, la baignade sous le firmament fait partie de ces luxes rarissimes mais divins.

Le ski demeure de loin l’activité numéro un dans la station avec, au total, 1000 instructeurs polyglottes. Christophe Normand, directeur de l’école de ski (ESF), insiste: «Un moniteur qui ne parle pas bien anglais ne rentre pas dans la station. L’idéal étant de parler trois à quatre langues. Le principal challenge est de coller à la réalité de la station et d’être à la hauteur des services proposés à Courchevel. Ici, peu importe l’hôtel, vous êtes sur les pistes; l’offre est assez variée, la constante étant la garantie de la bonne qualité où que vous soyez.» Et puisqu’il n’y a pas d’âge pour skier, le directeur en poste NATO STAFF CENTRE #1 | 11

he Central Station, chosen by Newsweek as the fourth most beautiful train station in the world, is the perfect point of departure for a day in Antwerp. From the station, walk through the Diamond district and, before 10 January, visit the Circuito Dos Diamantes exhibition at the Diamond Museum. For those who really want to get a whiff of this multicultural district, a visit to the Jewish neighbourhood or Chinatown is indispensable.

Stadsfeestzaal (City Function Hall). A little further on, the Rubens House is surely worth a visit. Walk to the Theaterplein and stand still for a moment to gaze upon the magnificent porch.

❞ From there, walk along the Schuttershofstraat and the Leopold-straat via the Bourla Theatre. In the Wilde Zee, great restaurants can be found, along with shops where one can buy Antwerp hands (Antwerpse handjes) and others chocolate specialties.

In the well-off municipalities of the capital as in those of the two neighbouring Brabant provinces that make up its Hinterland, building is not the only smart niche investment. Quality building lots, particularly rare, reached in the last decade values so high that real estate developers specialized in residential have only a few alternatives: either develop high density projects, or aim at the top of range. In quest for deco tips, we met

Jocelyne Sibuet, passionate designer passing in Brussels: “when we

bought the Lodge Park fifteen years ago, the hotel had a contemporary art deco style: cold, stiff, all in black and white. It was a total flop, people wanted cocooning.” The CEO of Group Sibuet explains the masterful transformation made to the place, as well as how to transpose its principles to our own interior.

la question «Qu’est-ce qu’une déco réussie?», Jocelyne Sibuet répond: «Une image c’est très, très long à construire et ça se casse très vite. Quand on commence, si l’on n’a pas une main très sûre et affirmée, qu’on ne prend pas de parti pris au risque de se tromper, on ne réussit pas parce qu’on hésite. Il faut être audacieux dans les mélanges, être décalé... Le syndrome du «Wow!», c’est important. Il faut avoir un parti pris et s’y tenir. Aller au bout de l’idée. Puis en avançant, on vient avec plus de simplicité. Le vrai exercice de style, c’est de garder la sobriété. Quand on gagne en maturité, on gagne en sobriété. Même Les Fermes de Marie à Megève (qui arborent un style savoyard) sont devenues beaucoup plus sobres et épurées, en mono-couleur. J’aime les tons rabattus (le blanc et le blanc cassé pour des chambres par exemple, c’est d’une élégance extrême!), le raffiné et pas rustique, le «Country Chic» qui dépasse le côté ‘écossais’.»

o the question “What’s a successful interior design?” Jocelyne Sibuet replies: “An image is very, very long to build and can be broken very quickly. When you start, if it is not with a very safe and stated hand, if you don’t stick to your convictions because you fear the risk of being wrong, then you will fail because you hesitate. You must be bold in the mixes, be fun... The “Wow!” syndrome is important. You must have your convictions and stick to it. Pursue the idea. Then over time, one gains in simplicity. The true style exercise is to keep the sobriety. When gaining in maturity, one wins in sobriety. Even Les Fermes de Marie in Megève (bearing a Savoyard style) has become much more sober and uncluttered, in monochrome. I like unsaturated tones (white and off-white for bedrooms for instance are of an extreme elegance!), the refined and not rustic, the “Country Chic “ going beyond the ‘Scottish’ style.”

Justement, question Country Chic, comment en être arrivé à ce résultat avec le Lodge Park, aujourd’hui l’un des hôtels les plus tendance en montagne ? «La bâtisse datait du début du siècle, répond la créatrice, à l’époque c’était le Grand Hôtel du Parc, un vieux palace très traditionnel.

On s’est dit «les volumes sont très beaux, mais que faire pour lui donner du style?» Le vieux bois, ça n’était pas ça l’histoire du lieu. On a voulu étoffer la bâtisse, construire des balcons en boiserie, des contreforts pour une apparence plus trapue dans les volumes extérieurs. Il fallait faire quelque chose de radicalement différent.»

Precisely, about Country Chic, how was this result achieved with the Park Lodge, today one of the trendiest hotels in the mountains? “The building dated from the beginning of the century, recalls the designer, at the time it was the Grand Hôtel du Parc, a very traditional, old palace.”

We thought: “the volumes are beautiful, but what to do to give it style?”

That old wood, that wasn’t the history of the place. To expand the building, we built wooden balconies and foothills for a more stocky appearance in external volumes. It had to be something radically different.»

In the suites, one can find brown alcantara, fur, cognac leather or crocodile headboards in a more contemporary style, white, taupe or grey false fur, interesting chunky fabrics, wool for curtains or blankets, touches of rabbit in leopard or zebra style, elegant carpets, Mongol goat… Stone as well, juxtaposed to leather and fur, around the chimneys for example.

INTERIOR DESIGN Dans les suites, on retrouve de l’alcantara marron, des têtes de lit en fourrure plus contemporaine ou en cuir cognac, en croco, etc. De la fausse fourrure blanche, taupe, grise, de grosses étoffes intéressantes dans la matière; de la laine pour des rideaux ou couvertures, des touches de lapin façon léopard ou zèbre, des tapis élégants, de la chèvre de Mongolie… De la pierre, aussi, juxtaposée aux touches de cuir et de fourrure, dans le pourtour des cheminées par exemple. Côté salon, c’est assez subtile dans le mélange. On y trouve des rideaux de chez Métaphores hyper raffinés, en reptile façon brun doré avec des pointes d’or dedans, du bois peint en taupe, des meubles plus contemporains mais toujours en bois, des tables en tranches de séquoia, des photos en noir et blanc, des fauteuils en peaux et des toiles tendues…»

As to the living rooms, the mix is quite subtle. There are hyper sophisticated curtains from Métaphores, in golden-brown reptile with spikes of gold inside, wood painted in taupe, more contemporary furniture but in wood still, tables made of slices of redwood, black and white photographs, skin armchairs and stretched canvas.»

And in practice, to transpose this to your interior: «For a contemporary urban or lodge style apartment, I think about those famous linen curtains from Métaphores, with a large feather cuff or bordered by ostriches or pheasant feathers; play monochrome with curtains like that, with cameo cushions, it’s sublime. The thing is to gauge: add a cow skin carpet in leopard or zebra style, a couple of quite sophisticated matching lamps, a pair of silver candlesticks, a beautiful centrepiece, candle holders in horn… Look at Flamant for example. In an apartment hallway, leather or buckskin lampshades, or even lizard style, greige, Chanel beige or taupe walls and a large skin with antler or rabbit chairs directly sets the trend.

To conclude, remember that success in a setting is not due to a total look; an interior design must deal with the DNA of the place, but must also match the personality of the occupant.»

Et en pratique, pour transposer le tout à son intérieur: «Pour un intérieur d’appartement urbain contemporain ou style Lodge, je pense à ces fameux rideaux en lin de chez Métaphores, avec de grand revers de plumes ou une bordure de plumes d’autruches ou de faisans; jouer la monochromie avec des rideaux comme ça, avec des coussins en camaïeu, c’est sublime. Leaves have slowly fallen, the fresh air is filled with scents of earth, cedar and spices… It has now become undeniable: winter is at our door, and in our plates. Hunting season is the perfect time to rediscover wild and delicious flavours, paired with a nice glass of spicy Burgundy.

Until January, wild duck, pheasant, hare, stag and doe find their ways into restaurant kitchens. Here’s a non-exhaustive list of addresses, to consume without moderation.

Les arbres ont graduellement perdu leur feuillage, l’air frais s’est gorgé d’arômes de terre, de cèdre et d’épices... C’est indéniable: l’hiver est à nos portes, et dans nos assiettes. La saison de la chasse est un moment propice à la redécouverte de saveurs sauvages et délicieuses, jumelées à un bon verre de Bourgogne épicé. Le Médicis Located in a charming renovated villa, Le Médicis offers doe, stag and pheasant dishes prepared ‘à la française’, to choose separately or in 3 or 4-courses menu. As to the reception, Yves Balthazar attaches particular care in receiving each client with a smiling attention. An appeal reinforced by nicely dressed tables, old chimneys and a few contemporary touches recently made by designer Martine Dekkers. Your wallet should not suffer too much despite the quality of the products, and the wine menu, French as well, has a few good surprises which do not necessitate paying a fortune.

GASTRONOMY NATO Staff Centre restaurant The team of NATO Staff Centre’s restaurant has enlarged with the arrival of a new chef. Luc Archambeau, after a (more than noticed) stopover at Lipsius (Overijse), gave himself for mission to introduce new Belgian and international flavours and demystify fancy cuisine while still offering fresh quality products. Ideal for a simple but tasty meal pleasantly shared between colleagues, family or friends. In December, the menu assures a few good surprises, such as the “Fillet of doe, “Grand Veneur” sauce” or even the “Guineafowl paupiette stuffed with foie gras and maroon.”

NATO STAFF CENTRE’S new chef Ce magazine n’est pas le seul nouveau venu à l’intérieur du Centre du Personnel; Luc Archambeau, son nouveau chef, vient lui aussi d’arriver. Nous avons tenté d’en savoir un peu plus sur lui et sur ses projets…

NSCM: Parlez-nous un peu de votre parcours.

Luc: J’ai fait l’école hôtelière de Namur, puis j’ai roulé ma bosse. En restaurants gastronomiques, à l’époque j’ai travaillé au Café de Paris, rue de la Vierge Noire à Bruxelles, puis j’ai commencé au restaurant le Lipsus il y a 27 ans, en même temps que le patron. Il y a 3 ans j’ai reçu mon diplôme de compagnon de la toque blanche (qui équivaut aux 33 Maîtres-Queux de Belgique, mais lorsqu’on n’est pas patron de son propre établissement). J’ai aussi été chef privé pour l’ambassadeur des États-Unis, dans sa résidence.

This magazine isn’t the only newcomer within the Staff Centre; Luc Archambeau, its new chef, has also just arrived. We’ve tried to learn a little bit more about him and his projects…

NSCM: Tell us a little bit more about your background.

Luc: I did the Namur hospitality management school, and then I went places. In gourmet restaurants, I worked at the Café de Paris, Rue de la Vierge Noire in Brussels, and then I started at the Lipsus restaurant 27 years ago, at the same time as the boss. Three years ago, I received my degree of “Companion of the white toque” (equivalent to The Order of 33 Master-Chefs of Belgium). I’ve also been chef for the private residence of the United States Ambassador.

NSCM: Que voulez-vous apporter à l’établissement ?

Luc: Arriver à en faire une brasserie de renom je dirais. Apporter de la gastronomie tout en conservant cet environnement de cercle sportif, avec des petites touches personnelles. Mieux présenter les plats, apporter des touches de nouvelle cuisine et essayer de relever le niveau tout en conservant la convivialité des lieux.

NSCM: Quelles différences faites-vous entre le restaurant du Staff Centre et les autres établissements dont vous avez fait l’expérience dans le passé ?

Luc: Déjà, c’est un restaurant d’entreprise sans en être un, quelque part, parce que les gens ne doivent pas se sentir dans leur environnement de travail lorsqu’ils sont ici. Parfois on fait 150 couverts le midi. C’est un cercle assez fermé.

NSCM: Comment gérer le multiculturalisme et les différentes tendances culinaires dans cet environnement?

GASTRONOMY NSCM: What do you want to bring to the establishment?

Luc: I would say to make it a renowned brasserie. To bring gastronomy while maintaining this environment of sports circle, with a few personal touches. Enhance the presentation of the dishes, bring a few notes of contemporary cuisine and try to increase the level while maintaining the conviviality of the place.

NSCM: What differences do you make between the Staff Centre’s restaurant and other restaurants that you have experienced in the past?

Luc: It is a business restaurant without being one, in a sense, because people should not feel in their work environment when they are here.

Sometimes we serve 150 people on lunch time. It is a fairly closed circle.

NSCM: How to manage the multiculturalism and different culinary trends in this environment?

Luc: I’ve worked in French gastronomy and then for the Ambassador of the United States where it was rather Tex-Mex and American food, but I really think that there is a way of allocating one week per country.

My goal would be to do at least once a month dishes coming from one of NATO member countries.

NSCM: What do you like the most about your job?

Luc: To be able to create and bring happiness to people. To see them happy. My greatest pleasure is when the waiters bring back the plates; I always have a look to see if they are empty.

NSCM: What challenges do you meet at NATO? Luc: The lunch rush, that’s a good challenge! When I worked in brasseries in the past, people would arrive at noon and leave at 3:30, 4 pm; they had time. Here, the 150 dishes have to be served in one hour!

And to adapt myself to the mentality, to have my ideas accepted and to please everyone. There are things which are more difficult to accept around here; bringing novelty and challenging the established order is not always easy.

NSCM: A model in the profession?

Luc: Not necessarily, but I like to follow the 3 stars chefs who do extravagant things, fusion cuisine, and so on. I’m a fan of Top Chefs and that kind of shows.

NSCM: An example of suggestions of the moment?

Luc: Game meat and wild mushrooms.

NSCM: What is your favourite dish?

Luc: Pastas. I’m a huge fan of pastas.

NSCM: The creation of which you are the most satisfied?

Luc: Pan-fried duck liver with acacia honey sauce and ginger jam, served on gingerbread French toasts. As a matter of fact, we do it in the starters suggestions.

NSCM: Who inspired you to become a chef?

Luc: I have no idea! No one was in this business in my family... But already when I was very small -about eight, nine years old- I would make pancakes during the weekends at home.

NSCM: What are your hobbies outside of cooking?

Luc: I love chilling! I am often immersed in my recipes books.

Otherwise I love traveling, and seeing what is happening elsewhere.

Luc: J’ai travaillé en gastronomie française puis pour l’ambassadeur des États-Unis ou c’était plutôt Tex-Mex et américaine, mais je pense qu’il y a fortement moyen d’avoir des semaines de cuisine qui se rapporte à chaque pays de l’OTAN. Mon but serait de faire au moins une fois par mois des plats qui proviennent d’un des pays membre de l’OTAN. NSCM: Qu’est-ce qui vous plait le plus dans votre métier ?

Luc: Pouvoir créer et donner du bonheur aux gens. Qu’ils soient contents. Mon plus grand plaisir c’est lorsque les serveurs ramènent les assiettes ; je regarde toujours si l’assiette est vide.

NSCM: Quels défis rencontrez-vous à l’OTAN ?

Luc: Le rush du midi, ça c’est un bon défi !

Quand je travaillais dans la brasserie avant, les gens arrivaient à midi et repartaient à 3h30 – 4h, ils avaient le temps. Ici les 150 couverts, il faut les faire en 1h ! Et de m’adapter à la mentalité d’ici, de faire accepter mes idées, et de plaire à tout le monde. Il y a des choses qui sont plus difficile à faire accepter, amener de la nouveauté et bousculer l’ordre établi c’est pas toujours facile.

NSCM: Un modèle dans la profession ?

Luc: Pas forcément, mais j’aime bien suivre les grands chefs 3* qui font des trucs un peu extravagants, la cuisine fusion, je suis fan des émissions du style Top Chef, etc.

NSCM: Un exemple de suggestions du moment?

Luc: Gibier et champignons des bois.

NSCM: Quel est votre plat préféré ?

Luc: Les pâtes, je suis un fana de pâtes.

NSCM: La création dont vous êtes le plus satisfait?

Luc: Foie de canard poêlé avec sauce au miel d’acacia et gingembre confit, servi sur un pain perdu au pain d’épices. On en fait d’ailleurs en suggestions dans les entrées.

NSCM: Qui vous a donné le goût à la cuisine?

Luc: Je n’en sais rien ! Personne n’a fait l’horeca chez moi… Mais déjà tout petit -vers huit, neuf ans- je faisais des crêpes le weekend à la maison.

NSCM: Quels sont vos centres d’intérêts en-dehors de la cuisine ?

Luc: J’adore pantoufler ! Je suis souvent plongé dans mes bouquins de recettes. Sinon j’adore voyager, voir ce qui se passe ailleurs.

The Chef ’s Secret

Luc Archambeau For this first gastronomic rendezvous, the Staff Centre’s new chef suggests a refined and gourmet seasonal menu.

Pour ce premier rendez-vous gastronomique, le nouveau chef du Centre du Personnel vous propose un menu de saison gourmand et raffiné.

Foie gras of duck Preparation time: 15 minutes Ingredients pour 2 people: 1 pear ■ Frothy butter ■ Brown sugar ■ Cider vinegar ■ Liège syrup ■ 2 slices of raw foie gras of duck ❞ Cut a pear into quarters and sear it in a frying-pan with a little frothy butter, sprinkle brown sugar over and lightly caramelise. ❞ Arrange the pieces of pear on a plate and keep warm.

Deglaze the pan with a dash of cider vinegar and a spoonful of Liège syrup. ❞ Add a drop of water to lighten the sauce and keep it warm to use as topping. ❞ Sear two slices of raw duck liver (2 x 80g per person) on both sides in a very hot non-adhesive pan without any fat, and put into a hot oven (175°C) for 3-4 minutes. Make sure they remain tender. ❞ Dry on kitchen paper, place on the pears and add the sauce. ❞ Couper une poire en quartiers et la saisir dans une poêle avec un peu de beurre mousseux, saupoudrer de cassonade brune et légèrement caraméliser. ❞ Dresser les morceaux de poires sur l’assiette et tenir au chaud. ❞ Déglacer la poêle avec un filet de vinaigre de cidre et une bonne cuillère de sirop de liège. ❞ Ajouter un filet d’eau pour détendre la sauce et garder au chaud pour napper. ❞ Saisir deux tranches de foie de canard cru dans une poêle non-adhésive bien chaude, sans apport de matière grasse et des deux côtés, et passer au four (175°C) pendant 3 à 4 minutes. Veiller à ce que le tout reste moelleux. ❞ Éponger sur du papier de cuisine, dresser sur les poires et saucer.

Filet of Brabant pheasant with Geuze beer Preparation time: 30 minutes Ingredients pour 2 people: 1 pheasant ■ 4 endives ■ Frothy butter ■ 1 Gueuze beer ■ Cream ■ ■ 150 g cranberries ■ 2 apples ❞B rown the pheasant and cook it the oven (175°C) for about 30 minutes (the fillet flesh may remain slightly pink), cover with foil and keep in the oven (turned off and door slightly open) for 10 minutes. This will make the meat tender. ❞M eanwhile, slice the endive thinly and put it into frothy butter in a frying pan, then remove the endive and keep for later. ❞D eglaze the pan with Gueuze beer, let it reduce to syrup, add cream and let it thicken. Put the endive back in. ❞C heck the seasoning and pour over the pheasant, which meat has been removed from the bones. ❞C an be served with cranberries and a baked potato. ❞C olorer le faisan et cuire à four chaud (175°C) environ 30 minutes. Il peut rester légèrement rosé au filet. ❞ Couvrir

d’aluminium et garder au four, éteint mais entr’ouvert, durant 10 minutes. Ceci a pour effet d’attendrir la chair. ❞É mincer les chicons et les faire revenir dans un beurre mousseux, en sauteuse. Retirer les chicons et réserver. ❞D églacer à la Gueuze, laisser réduire à l’état de sirop, ajouter de la crème et laisser réduire à consistance. Y remettre les chicons. ❞ Rectifier l’assaisonnement et napper le faisan qui aura été levé de sa carcasse. ❞ Ce plat peut être accompagné d’airelles et d’une pomme au four.

ood pairing is a technique which attempts to discover food items which blend pleasantly. This three steps method is based on the principle that products go well together when they have in common some essential tastes.

Step 1| Taste analysis

The first step is critical to provide the necessary information to apply the food pairing method successfully. A detailed analysis of the aromas is done in a university lab. This provides a set of data which are then structured in a statistical overview.

Step 2|main components of the taste

Tastes that exceed a certain threshold value are the main components of the taste. They are gathered in a list of five to twenty observable tastes, to distinguish.

Step 3|Establish the food pairing trees

Finally, key taste components of a product are compared with an internal database. The result is presented in a food pairing tree; a visualisation of the best combinations. The main ingredient is placed in the middle and surrounded by its best matches, which are grouped by type. The more the branch is short, the better is the correspondence.

An example?|Foie gras and peach skin

Foie gras is definitely a product of excellence. In combination with pear, it remains a classic of French cuisine. To give a contemporary twist to this traditional taste union, foie gras is combined to peach skin, a new trend in the gastronomic world. It forms the perfect mixture of sweet and salty.

La première étape cruciale fournit des informations qui sont nécessaires afin d’appliquer avec succès la méthode de food pairing. Dans un laboratoire universitaire, on réalise une analyse détaillée des arômes. Ceci fournit tout un ensemble de données qui sont ensuite structurées dans un aperçu statistique.

Étape 2 principaux composants du goût

Les goûts qui dépassent une certaine valeur seuil sont les principaux composants du goût. Ils sont rassemblés dans une liste de cinq à vingt goûts observables, à distinguer.

Enfin, on compare les principaux composants de goût d’un produit avec une base de données interne. Le résultat est présenté dans un arbre food pairing; une visualisation des meilleures combinaisons. L’ingrédient de base est placé au milieu et entouré des meilleures correspondances, qui sont regroupées par type. Plus la branche est courte, meilleure est la correspondance.

Le foie gras est définitivement un produit d’excellence. En combinaison avec la poire, celui-ci reste un classique de la cuisine française. he patient himself does not realise he snores. Very often, the partner comes to consult because of the awful nights spent. It’s not a joke; some couples get divorced because of that!” relates Dr Ghosn, ENT within NATO Staff Centre. Fortunately, several treatments, medical or surgical, can overcome continuous snoring.

Step 1: identify the cause

Fear the

“The ENT is the most competent to identify the cause of snoring”. In adults, there are three types of anatomical causes of snoring: nasal, oral, or pharyngeal.” specifies Dr Ghosn. To sum up, regarding the nose, there may be obstruction because of polyps, allergic rhinitis, a deviation of the septum (congenital or traumatic) or too narrow nasal valves. Same for the mouth: remote mandibles can obstruct the airway and cause vibration of the soft palate causing people to snore. As to the pharynx, an hypertrophy of the palatine tonsils or of the veil of the palate or a hypotonic uvula can also generate the same

inconveniences. Not to mention obesity. “In children, adds Dr Ghosn, adenoid hypertrophy is the main cause.” Note that a worsening of the phenomenon often occurs when taking sleeping pills or alcohol.

Step 2: Establish a diagnosis In adults, after a clinical examination, the ENT systematically makes a polysomnography, or “sleep lab”, to exclude sleep apnoea, which may seriously threaten the health of the patient. “The patient sleeps one night at the hospital and we record several parameters, including the number of snoring, oxygen saturation in the blood and the amount of respiratory arrest per hour. If we count more than 30, then we talk about sleep apnoea.

The results of the tests will determine the type of treatment to choose.»”

Étape 1: identifier la cause «C’est l’ORL qui est le plus compétent pour identifier la cause du ronflement. Chez les adultes, il existe trois types de causes anatomiques à l’origine du ronflement: nasal, buccal ou pharyngé» précise le Dr Ghosn. En clair, au niveau du nez, il peut y avoir obstruction suite à une rhinite allergique, à une déviation du septum ou de la cloison nasale (congénitale ou traumatique), à la présence de polypes ou à des valves nasales trop étroites. Idem pour la bouche : des mandibules reculées peuvent entraver les voies respiratoires et provoquer la vibration du voile du palais à l’origine du ronflement. Quant au pharynx, une hypertrophie des amygdales palatines ou du voile du palais ou une luette hypotonique peut également engendrer les mêmes désagréments. Sans parler de l’obésité. «Quant aux enfants, rajoute Dr Ghosn, les végétations adénoïdes hypertrophiées sont la principale cause.» À noter qu’une aggravation du phénomène intervient souvent lors de la prise de somnifères et d’alcool.

Étape 2: établir le diagnostic Chez l’adulte, après un examen clinique, l’ORL fait systématiquement une polysomnographie, ou «labo du sommeil», pour exclure l’apnée du sommeil qui peut menacer sérieusement la santé du patient. «Le patient dort une nuit à l’hôpital et on y enregistre plusieurs paramètres, dont le nombre de ronflements, la saturation d’oxygène dans le sang ainsi que la quantité d’arrêts respiratoires par heure. Si on en dénombre plus de 30, alors on parle d’apnée du sommeil. Les résultats des tests vont déterminer le type de traitement à préconiser.»

Étape 3: traiter En guise de prévention, les gens souffrant de surcharge pondérale doivent songer à perdre de poids. Éviter la prise de calmants, somnifères et boissons alcoolisées qui engendrent une dépression des voies respiratoires et cesser de fumer peut également faire une différence significative. En plus de la prévention, il existe des traitements médicaux et interventions chirurgicales pour améliorer la qualité de vie des patients. Quant aux patients souffrant d’apnées du sommeil, un appareil nommé CPAP (pour continuous positive air pressure) peut être requis.

Ce masque, avec lequel le patient doit dormir toutes les nuits, souffle de l’oxygène pressurisé dans les voies respiratoires dès qu’une apnée se déclenche.

Au niveau chirurgical, il existe plusieurs techniques de correction en fonction du problème anatomique. Le retrait des polypes et/ou végétations et le redressement de la cloison nasale (ou septoplastie) en font partie. Cela dit, l’opération la plus commune est l’uvulo-palato-pharyngo-plastie (UPPP). «On retire les amygdales, raccourcit le voile du palais et la luette. On tend le voile du palais et élargit les voies respiratoires pour faire cesser les vibrations.» Et lorsque l’anesthésie générale est contreindiquée? «On peut aussi retendre le voile du palais grâce à des radiofréquences; via l’application d’une source thermique, on crée une fibrose du voile du palais. Cela se fait en trois séances espacées de huit semaines, sous anesthésie locale. C’est une bonne alternative pour les personnes âgées, par exemple» explique Dr Ghosn. «Et tout est pris en charge par la mutuelle, sauf le CPAP si le patient souffre de moins de 25 apnées par heure.»

Step 3: Treat As prevention, overweight people should consider losing weight. Avoid taking of tranquilizers, sleeping pills and alcoholic beverages that cause respiratory depression and quit smoking can also make a significant difference. In addition to prevention, there are several medical treatments and surgical interventions to improve the quality of life of the patients.

For patients with sleep apnoea, a device named CPAP (for continuous positive air pressure) may be required. This mask, with which the patient should sleep every night, blows pressurised oxygen in the respiratory tract as soon as apnoea starts.

At the surgical level, there are several techniques to correct the anatomical problems. The removal of polyps and/or adenoids and straightening of the nasal septum (or septoplasty) are good examples. That said, the most common operation is Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). What does it mean? “It means removing the tonsils, shortening the soft palate and the uvula. It tends the soft palate’s tissue and enlarges the airways to stop the vibration.” And when general anaesthesia is contraindicated? “We can also achieve re-tension of the soft palate thanks to radiofrequencies; through the application of a heat source, it creates a fibrosis of the soft palate’s tissue. This is done in three sessions done height weeks apart, under local anaesthesia. It is a good alternative for the elderly, for example” explains Dr Ghosn. “And everything is taken in charge by the health insurance, except the CPAP if the patient suffers from less than 25 apnoea per hour.”

If reflexology cannot pretend to treat or cure any medical condition, this approach can certainly be considered to improve various health issues. For some people, it turns out to be particularly helpful to reduce stress and anxiety. Meeting with Mrs Morag Davite, reflexologist AT THE NATO STAFF CENTRE MEDICAL CENTRE, describing her job.

n the West, reflexology goes back to the work on reflex zones of the American doctor William Fitzgerald and physiotherapist Eunice D. Ingham. Ingham began to develop her theory during the early thirties, before founding the first school of reflexology.

Named International Institute of Reflexology, this school is today run by her nephew, Dwight Byers. “Reflexology is not the same in each country, explains Morag Davite, reflexologist at the medical centre of NATO, personally, I did my training in England, and it was very different from what is practised elsewhere. The technique with which I work is that of the Institute of reflexology, founded by Ingham.”

n Occident, la réflexologie remonte aux travaux sur les zones réflexes du docteur américain William Fitzgerald et de la physiothérapeute Eunice D. Ingham. Celle-ci a commencé à développer sa théorie au début des années trente, avant de fonder la première école de réflexologie. Non-intrusive therapeutic method which stimulates different areas of the body through feet and hands massage, reflexology is a complement and not a replacement of traditional medicine. According to its practitioners, it would count among its benefits a relief of tension, a regulation of gland and organ functions, and an improvement of blood and lymphatic flow. “It is a therapy where we work on a person in its entirety: the emotional, mental and physical. Nobody really knows how, but it works! I’ve been a reflexologist for 12 years and I am constantly surprised of its effectiveness on people, particularly on stress” says Morag. “It is not a cure, I can’t claim that, but people find that it helps to relax. And through relaxation, the body helps itself to heal its conditions, emotional or physical.”

In practice At the first visit, the Scottish reflexologist makes a health check to ensure that there is no objection to the treatment. She then determines if certain points should be avoided, in pregnant women, for example.

“I must always listen, she says, because if some people say everything to you straight away, others can hide their real problems, which then appear after a few sessions. I even saw people burst into tears in the middle of the session!” The application of pressure, stretches and movements of the feet or hands, assigned to corresponding parts of the body, eliminate the stress responsible of disrupting one’s normal balance. About the problems that often lead to consultation, Morag mentions “stress related to work, primarily, but also pain in the shoulders and back and hormonal disorders.”

Reflexology is for everyone, although there are some contraindications: “If someone suffers from thrombosis, then I can’t practice. I also prefer to avoid treating pregnant women in the first three months of their pregnancy.” It can also be used on oneself or relatives after taking a basic course or being initiated by one of the many practical manuals on the market. A session must normally provide a sense of serenity and relaxation. Giving your impressions to the therapist and enjoying the sessions is the best way to increase their effectiveness.

Je suis réflexologue depuis 12 ans et je suis constamment surprise de son efficacité sur les gens, plus particulièrement sur le stress.» déclare Morag. «Ça n’est pas un remède, je ne peux prétendre ça, mais les gens trouvent que ça les aide à se détendre.

Et par le biais de la relaxation, l’organisme s’aide lui-même à soigner ses maux, qu’ils soient affectifs ou physiques.»

En pratique À la première visite, la réflexologue écossaise fait un bilan de santé pour s’assurer que rien ne s’oppose au traitement. Elle détermine alors si certains points doivent être évités, dans le cas des femmes enceintes, par exemple. «Il faut toujours être à l’écoute, précise-t-elle, car si certaines personnes vous disent tout directement, d’autres peuvent masquer leurs vrais problèmes, qui n’apparaissent alors qu’au bout de quelques séances. J’ai même vu des gens fondre en larmes en plein milieu de séance!» S’en suit l’application de pressions, d’étirements et de mouvements des pieds ou des mains pour affecter les parties correspondantes du corps, par effet miroir.

En appliquant cette technique, la réflexologue élimine le stress présent, qui perturbe l’équilibre normal de l’organisme. À propos des problèmes qui mènent le plus souvent à la consultation, Morag dénombre «le stress lié au travail, principalement, mais aussi des douleurs aux épaules et au dos ainsi que des dérèglements hormonaux.»

La réflexologie s’adresse à tous, bien qu’il existe parfois des contre-indication: «Si quelqu’un souffre de thromboses veineuses, alors je ne peux pratiquer. Je préfère également éviter de traiter des femmes enceintes dans les trois premiers mois de leur grossesse.» On peut également s’en servir sur soi-même ou ses proches après avoir suivi un cours de base ou s’y être initié grâce à l’un des nombreux manuels pratiques que l’on trouve sur le marché. Une séance doit normalement procurer un sentiment de sérénité et de relaxation. Donner ses impressions à votre réflexologue et profiter des séances est le meilleur moyen d’augmenter leur efficacité.

People from Finland and Sweden already know it: sauna therapy is a highly effective way to reduce anxiety and stress. However, saunas are much more than that; other health benefits of its use include muscle relaxation, detoxification and glowing healthy skin.

The following tips might make it even more effective.

Les Finlandais et les Suédois le savent déjà: le sauna est un moyen très efficace pour réduire l’anxiété et le stress. Cela dit, les saunas ont bien d’autres avantages; relaxation musculaire, désintoxication du corps et peau éclatante en font partie. Les conseils suivants pourraient rendre vos futures séances encore plus efficaces.

Before the sauna 1. Avoid the sauna after a hearty meal or if you have an empty stomach.

2. Go to the bathroom, take a hot shower and dry your skin afterwards as wet skin hampers sweating.

3. Be sure to remove your contact lenses before entering the sauna.

During the sauna 4. It is better to perspire profusely for a short period rather than less for a longer period. Therefore, sit on the highest seat.

5. D on’t forget your towel! It must be large enough to wrap you entirely.

6. Sitting or lying? Up to you. If you lie, the heat will be distributed more easily all over your body. However, during the last minutes, it is preferable to sit (at a lower level) to stimulate the blood flow.

7. Do not stay in the hot room for more than 30 minutes. 15 minutes should be enough.

8. Drink sufficient amount of water to replenish lost fluids and minerals.

After the sauna 9. Allow adequate time for rest after leaving the sauna; the cooling phase is really necessary. Going out to get some fresh air is beneficial to the brain, body and also to “cool down” your lungs.

10. A cold shower or bath helps your body find its normal temperature and eliminates perspiration. Be sure to immerse your head under water since it is at this level that the body evacuates the heat the most.

5. N’oubliez pas votre serviette! Elle doit être suffisamment grande pour vous envelopper entièrement.

to the Black Box

On 3 February 2011, NATO Staff Centre has introduced a new training programme which has grown to be the most popular sport and leisure activity at the headquarters, with some 170 staff members training every week.

rossfit is the main strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units and champion martial artists, but can be practiced by anyone with the right motivation and will. Members of NATO’s Close Protection Unit suggested to the Director of the Staff Centre that all staff members at NATO could benefit from this new training facility. Consequently, the “Black Box”, together with a new sense of community, was created.

A facility near the squash courts in the omnisport hall has been redesigned to what has become known as the “Black Box”, a place where Crossfitters gather to do their workout under supervision and guidance of an instructor who helps you to improve and evolve taking into account your level of fitness and capacities. It takes about three classes to understand the various exercises and for your muscles to get used to the new movements.

The kettle bell plays the lead role in most trainings and lets you focus on strength and flexibility training as well as cardiovascular activity. The entire workout lasts for one hour, with a good balance between technique and cardio. Crossfit is about striving towards the same goals with a group of people who you instantly feel connected with, because everyone is there to work hard and to make the most out of the workout by exceeding their potential that little extra each time.

“There is this moment during the workout, when nothing else matters, when you cannot think about work, life, or anything else because wasting that much energy means you will not have enough left, everything falls away and all that is left is the next repetition... Crossfit Zen” enthuses SFC Timothy Mayeux, United States Army. According to trainer Emil Hansen: “The Black Box is for anyone who is willing to face their limitations and, in time, surpass them.”

The atmosphere that is created throughout Crossfit is mixed: constant encouragement from the trainer, sweating and cheering, and most of all, making sure that nobody gives up; that is its key to success. It is like no other sport you may have encountered because it is not a sport focusing on specialisation but rather on scalability which is applicable to anyone regardless of their fitness level. After all, everyone who starts Crossfit becomes hooked. That is a given. Before you know it, you will be discussing “reps, squats, burpees, cleans and jerks” in the NATO hallway with your fellow colleagues. Working out is a lot more fun with a smile.

L'entraînement complet dure une heure, avec un bon équilibre entre la technique et le cardio.

Le Crossfit, c’est s'efforcer d’aller vers les mêmes buts avec un groupe de personnes avec qui vous êtes instantanément connectées, parce que chacun est là pour s’entraîner ardemment et pour dépasser à chaque fois un peu plus ses limites.

«Il y a ce moment au cours de la séance d'entraînement où plus rien n’a d’importance, où vous ne pensez plus au travail, à votre vie, ou à toute autre chose, parce que gaspiller cette quantité d'énergie signifie que vous n'en aurez plus assez de disponible, tout autour s’évanouit et tout ce qui reste c’est la répétition suivante... C’est le Crossfit Zen » s’enthousiasme le sergent-chef Timothy Mayeux, de l’Armée américaine. Selon l'entraîneur Emil Hansen: «La black Box est faite pour tout ceux qui sont prêts à faire face à leurs limites et, à terme, à les dépasser.».

L'atmosphère créée tout au long du Crossfit est mixte: encouragements constant de l’entraîneur, transpiration, exaltation et surtout, en s'assurer que personne n’abandonne; c'est là la clé du succès. Ça ne ressemble à aucun autre sport dont vous pourriez avoir fait l’expérience car ce n'est pas un sport qui met l'accent sur la spécialisation, mais plutôt sur l'évolutivité qui s'applique à toute personne, indépendamment de son niveau de condition physique. Après tout, tout le monde qui débute le Crossfit devient accro. C'est un fait. Avant de vous en rendre compte, vous discuterez «reps, squats, burpees, clean et jerks» dans les couloirs de l'OTAN avec vos collègues.

The Audi Q3 came out on the Belgian market in November. If the price for the base version remains affordable, it is not cheap once ornamented with all its attire.

It has all of a great car and offers a range of equipment originating in straight line from the prestige vehicles segment which Audi leads, here, with 5,4% of market share. We have tested it for you, in its 2,0 gasoline, 170 bhp version.

n SUV which doesn’t look like one, but includes all the best of its siblings’ features (Q5 and Q7), steroids and weight-less.

Audi clearly takes up the conquest of a new market segment with this new model which looks like nothing in appearance but is, in fact, packed with innovations, all very accessible and intuitive, to keep intact the pleasure of driving.

The essence is almost invisible at first sight, past the 12 customisable body colours and five choices of interior, enhanced with larch wood and aluminium inlays, including three well-groomed leather upholsteries.

Of course, the typical “2/3 vs 1/3” proportions between the painted body surfaces and glass is maintained by the German brand. And with its length of 4,39 m for a width of 1,83 m and a height of 1,60 m, the Q3 would go almost unnoticed compared to the muscled species of its segment, often unskilful in urban areas. But with its drag coefficient of 0,32 and optimised airflow even under the vehicle thanks to its streamlined base and 17 cm ground clearance, it is a reference.

Without even looking like one, and while remaining as comfortable in the city as in the countryside.

Once the door crossed, the true potential of the new Q3 quickly appears. Even before being in motion: more than any other high-end German model, it is only one behind the steering wheel that the reasons for the entry price to become owner of this jewel of technology and balance show, which is sure to seduce female clients which may be a bit cooled by the larger versions. A single number: in its frontwheel-drive version, the latest Audi displays less than 1.500 kg on the scale.

Impossible here to detail the list of equipment on the menu, including many multimedia Audi Connect options (Bluetooth, WLAN, GPS GPS assistance system, camera, etc.) and centralised management of energy efficiency (including start-stop), heated seats and the ‘comfort’ key, which allows access and start up key in the pocket. Nevertheless, in a list as long as an arm, not free of course, let’s mention the intelligent regulation of Xenon headlights and «Bose Surround Sound» audio system with 14 speakers, particularly well-conceived.

Bien sûr, le typique rapport «2/3-1/3» entre les surfaces de carrosserie peintes et les vitres est maintenu par la marque allemande. Et avec sa longueur de 4,39m pour une largeur de 1,83m et une hauteur de 1,60m, la Q3 passerait quasi inaperçue dans les specimens musclés de son segment, souvent patauds en milieu urbain. Mais avec son coefficient de trainée de 0,32 et le flux d’air optimisé même sous le véhicule grâce à son soubassement caréné et sa garde au sol de 17 cm, elle fait d’emblée référence. Sans même en avoir l’air et en restant aussi à l’aise en ville qu’à la campagne.

Une fois la porte franchie, les vraies potentialités de la nouvelle Q3 se révèlent rapidement. Avant même d’être en mouvement: plus que tout autre modèle haut de gamme allemand, c’est au volant seulement que l’on découvre les raisons du prix d’entrée à payer pour devenir propriétaire de ce petit bijou ciselé de technologie et d’équilibre, qui ne manquera pas de séduire tout particulièrement une clientèle féminine un peut refroidie par les

Engines: passion and sobriety combined

Keeping the best for the end, the Audi Q3 will be offered, in the long term, with four types of 2,0 litres, four-cylinder engines. Three are available for the moment, all four-wheel-drive. Two petrol version: the 125 kW (170 bhp) TFSI, which we tested for you, and 155 kW (211 bhp). The 2,0 TDI (diesel) available from launch develops 130 kW (177 bhp). Its front-wheel-drive variant, which still has to reach Belgium (103 kW, 140 bhp), will display an average consumption under 5,5 litres per 100 km.

The model we tested, still in break-in, showed 7 litres per 100 km during the test, in non-thrifty driving.

If the six-speed manual gearbox of the tested model (as on the fuel-efficient TDI version still expected) is a real pleasure, fulfilling driving happiness is reached with the S tronic automatic twin-clutch transmission, with steering wheel control. Leather-wrapped, it goes without saying.

Motorisations: fougue et sobriété couplées

Le meilleur pour la fin: l’Audi Q3 sera proposée à terme avec 4 motorisations 2 litres, 4 cylindres.

Trois sont disponibles pour l’instant, toutes en transmission quattro. Deux en version essence: les TFSI 125kW (170CV), que nous avons testé pour vous, et 155kW (211CV). Le 2,0 TDI (diesel) disponible au lancement développe 130 kW (177 CV).

Sa variante ‘traction’, qui doit encore arriver chez nous (103kW, 140CV), affichera une consommation plancher moyenne sous les 5,5 litres aux 100 kms. Le modèle que nous avons testé, toujours en rodage, affichait 7 litres aux 100 kms durant l’essai, en conduite peu économe.

Si la boîte manuelle 6 vitesses de série sur le modèle testé (comme sur le TDI le plus économe encore attendu) est un vrai plaisir, le comble du bonheur de conduite est au rendez-vous avec la boîte S tronic à 7 rapports, avec commandes au volant.

Il a la particularité de ne pas violer ni ne tuer ses proies mais de leur réserver un sort sans doute pire: les abandonner dans un état de mort cérébrale après les avoir séduites et kidnappées.

“Building Brasilia”

The exhibition «Building Brasilia», with 62 photographs from the Moreira Salles Institute collection (IMS), will take place at BIP (Brussels Info Place), as part of the Europalia. Brasil Festival.

The exhibition offers a wide view of the period of Brasilia’s construction, with a special emphasis on the architectural pieces built at this same period. There are also images of the Núcleo Bandeirante, a neighborhood that was officially created in 1957 to house thousands of workers who were drawn to the city during the years of construction.

Dans le cadre de la programmation Europalia.brasil, l’exposition «Building Brasilia» regroupe 62 photographies émanant de la collection de l’Institut Moreira Salles. Elle se tient au BIP (Brussels Info Place), dans le cadre du Festival international des Arts Europalia.

L’exposition offrira un bel angle de vue sur la période couvrant la construction de Brasilia et mettra particulièrement en exergue les œuvres architecturales, érigées à cette même époque. Vous découvrirez également des images de Núcleo Bandeirante, la ville voisine qui fut officiellement créée en 1957 pour héberger les millions de travailleurs ayant mis le cap sur Brasilia durant les années de sa construction.

For the opening of this new space in Brussels, Flore de Brantes exposes three artists: Hervé Van der Straeten, Todd & Fitch and Ian Davenport. Her personal tastes are to mix her first loves, French furniture of the 18th century with the artworks of contemporary artists, the common denominator between the works of these three artists being the almost obsessive attention to perfection and detail.

Museum Night Fever

On 3 March 2012 comes back the Museum Night Fever, the annual meeting of the Brussels museums night. The Sofitel Brussels Louise hotel hosts Robin, photographer of international reputation, in an exhibition on the theme of the martyrdom of St. Sebastian, to be held in its lounge until 12 March, 2012.

From Depeche Mode to Mylène Farmer, from Robbie Williams to Radiohead, Robin photographed the musical world for twenty years. For the international day against AIDS, Robin provides original thinking through images inspired by the figure of St. Sebastian, creating a parallel between the two worst epidemics in the history of humanity, plague and AIDS. L’hôtel Sofitel Brussels Le Louise accueille Robin, photographe de réputation internationale, dans le cadre d’une exposition sur le thème du martyre de Saint Sébastien, qui se tiendra dans ses salons jusqu’au 12 mars 2012. De Depeche Mode à Mylène Farmer, de Robbie Williams à Radiohead, Robin photographie le monde musical depuis vingt ans.

Nabucco

This impressive and modern opera was elevated to a new level by Director Frank Van Laecke, literally as figuratively.

In addition to the visual and threedimensional experience, this opera is primarily a human testimony in which unity, commitment and universality are highlighted. The composer, Giuseppe Verdi, translated in music the great passions and intimate emotions of a public and private story. Nabucco is a compelling love story with, as a background, a fight for freedom and a struggle for power. Love, hate, freedom merging into a single work.

Cet opéra moderne et impressionnant a été élevé à un nouveau niveau par le metteur en scène Frank Van Laecke, au propre comme au figuré.
