Conventional wisdom tells us that, as we get older, time seems to speed up. In your Staff Centre, projects are evolving at a fast pace since we launched the first edition of the Staff Centre magazine. In the coming months, the following will take place: first inter-delegations sports competition, in support of NATO’s injured soldiers (p.6), the introduction at Aramark self service area of a faster, secure payment system called “Scan & Go” (p.39), and new Zumba® sessions to fulfill the growing demand. With a goal of communicating the most accurate information on the Staff Centre’s activities, the second issue of the NATO Staff Centre Magazine also features exciting interviews from: Philippe Beeckmans, Chief Instructor at the Fire Department (p.10), Dr Sonia Lejeune, the Medical Centre’s gynaecologist (p.42), Thomas Evers Poulsen, professional dancer and Zumba® instructor (p.46) as well as Natalie Bourlard, your shiatsu practitioner (p.48). New annual rendez-vous at the Staff Centre, both family oriented and intercultural, the inter-delegations sports competition of 9 June combines promoting cultural resources and gathering around a common cause: that of the wounded soldiers of NATO. We had a chat with Davy Wauters, the brain behind the project. “The idea came to me a few months ago when, looking for a way to take

La rumeur se répandit telle une traînée de poudre jusqu’à titiller l’intérêt de la Division Diplomatie Publique, qui y apporta volontiers son soutien. «L’idée m’est venue il y a quelques mois lorsque, à la recherche d’un moyen de se mobiliser pour les soldats blessés qui œuvrent au maintien de la paix, de nos droits fondamentaux et les objectifs de l’OTAN, j’ai réalisé l’ampleur du potentiel des infrastructures du Centre du Personnel, explique Davy avec éloquence. Grâce à l’un des plus grands centres sportifs d’Europe, nous pouvons organiser ici un événement à la fois caritatif et sportif basé sur l’esprit d’équipe. Je voulais que nous puissions nous unir dans l’effort pour une journée dédiée au don de soi, pour tous ceux dont c’est le quotidien et qui sont au front. Après mûre réflexion, la décision fut prise de laisser le choix de l’ASBL bénéficiaire à la délégation gagnante (pour autant que ce soit au profit de nos vétérans). «Je ne suis pas un soldat, précise Davy, et je ne risque pas ma vie tous les jours, mais je fais de mon mieux pour aider les dirigeants de l’Organisation à accomplir sa mission. L’OTAN œuvre au maintien de la paix depuis 1949, et je suis fier d’en faire part.»

The rumour spread like wildfire to the point of raising the interest of the Public Diplomacy Division, which brought its support.

“The idea came to me a few months ago when, looking for a way to take action for the injured soldiers who work so hard to maintain peace, fundamental human rights and NATO’s objectives, I realised the magnitude of the potential of the Staff Centre’s infrastructures, explains Davy eloquently. With one of the largest sports centres in Europe, we can organise here an event both charitable and sports oriented based on team spirit. I wanted all of us to share the effort for a day dedicated to selfsacrifice, for all of those are in the front line.” After careful consideration, the decision was made to leave the choice of beneficiary to the winning delegation (as long as it is for our veterans). “I am not a soldier, specifies Davy, and I don’t risk my life every day, but I do my best to help the leaders of the Organization to accomplish its mission. NATO works to maintain peace since 1949, and I am proud to be part of it.”

Supporting the initiative Rest assured, whether you are a sports fan or not, there will be something for everyone on 9 June. On the schedule that day: four sports events, a huge barbecue... And with a little luck, sunshine! Whether you work for NATO as International Military Staff, International Staff, Military Representative, delegations or linked to the SHAPE, the only requirement to be allowed to enroll is to support your native country. From 15 March until 1 May, people willing to participate can get in touch with the delegation of their native country to subscribe, by teams of two. “There will be a link available on natostaffcentre.be with the details of the contact person for each delegation, Davy adds. And don’t forget: there are no small countries; just great nations!” To raise funds, a payment of €25 per participant will be asked. Donations welcome, of course (bank account: 643-0034603-51).

Au programme, quatre épreuves sportives réparties sur la journée, un énorme barbecue... Et avec un peu de chance, du soleil! Que vous travailliez pour l’OTAN au sein de l’État-major militaire international, au secrétariat international, comme membre d’une délégation ou du SHAPE, la seule condition pour être autorisé à concourir est d’appuyer votre pays d’origine. À partir du 15 mars et jusqu’au 1er mai, les personnes souhaitant participer pourront prendre contact avec leur délégation pour s’inscrire, par équipe de deux. «Il y aura un lien disponible sur natostaffcentre.be avec les détails de la personne-ressource pour chaque nation, ajoute Davy. Et n’oubliez pas: il n’y a pas de petit pays, il n’y a que des grandes nations!» Afin d’amasser des fonds, un versement de 25€ par participant sera demandé. Donations bienvenues, évidemment (compte bancaire: 643-0034603-51).

Le Jour J Les quatre différentes épreuves retenues pour la compétition nécessiteront de l’endurance, de la force physique, de la souplesse, de la vitesse, de l’agilité et de la précision dans l’exécution des mouvements. Ces derniers pourront être étudiés d’avance via une vidéo publiée sur le web. «Rien de trop technique, rassure Davy. Les quatre épreuves ont été conçues sous forme de courses à relais d’une durée de 15 minutes chacune. Les coéquipiers devront effectuer à tour de rôle des mouvements spécifiques qui, cumulés, détermineront leur score, tandis que le binôme prouvera son endurance via natation, course à pieds, etc.» Avis à ceux qui n’auraient pas totalement saisi, une séance d’information aura lieu une semaine avant l’événement pour éclaircir les derniers points.

The D Day The four different tests selected for the competition will require stamina, physical strength, flexibility, speed, agility and precision in the execution of the movements. Those will be explained in advance via a video published on the web. “Nothing too technical, reassures Davy. The four tests were designed as 15-minute relay races each. Teammates will have to execute in turn specific movements which, combined, will determine their score, while the pair will prove his endurance through swimming, running, etc.” To those who have not fully understood, an information session will be held a week before the event to clarify the last points.

A constantly updated training, daily physical activity; fire fighters from NATO’s fire unit do not rest. To remain ready to intervene in all circumstances, regular monitoring of equipment and, most of all, absolute trust between members of the team are imperative. Philippe Beeckmans explains. f, before arriving at NATO, fire fighters from the fire department must have a minimum of five years’ experience, most of them are well beyond the ten years. “All these people come here with their background, their culture, their language and their professionalism, indicates Philippe, Chief Inspector. We are lucky to have a relatively stable team, which is important because we must work on mutual trust. Imagine if, during an intervention, your partner loses the lifeline… Then you’re busted!” Most of these interventions are associated with the site, continues Philippe: “Among the frequently encountered problems, there are infiltrations, which become fairly regular given the age of the buildings, stuck elevators, and neutralisation of hydrocarbons, wasps nests or fallen trees. Then, given the specificity of the Organization, it must also deal from time to time to suspect parcels, more marginal interventions compared to normal fire stations.”

i, avant d’arriver à l’OTAN, les pompiers de l’unité d’incendie doivent avoir accumulé un minimum de cinq années d’expérience, la plupart d’entre eux ont largement dépassé le cap des dix ans. «Tous ces gens viennent ici avec leur bagage, leur culture, leur langue et leur professionnalisme, indique Philippe, inspecteur en chef. On a la chance d’avoir une équipe relativement stable, ce qui est important car on doit travailler sur la confiance mutuelle. Imaginez si, lors d’une intervention, votre binôme lâche la ligne de vie… alors vous êtes grillé!» La plupart de ces interventions vont de pair avec le site, continue Philippe: «Parmi les problèmes fréquemment rencontrés, on dénombre des infiltrations, qui deviennent assez régulières vu l’âge des bâtiments, des blocages d’ascenseurs, des neutralisations d’hydrocarbures, des nids de guêpes ou encore d’arbres qui tombent. Puis, vu la spécificité de l’Organisation, on doit aussi faire face de temps à autre à des colis suspects, interventions plus marginales par rapport à une caserne extérieure.»

«Vers sept heures, on commence, comme toute caserne, par le contrôle et la maintenance du véhicule et du matériel. Nous avons une ambulance, une camionnette incendie et un chariot électrique qui fait office de camion intérieur où l’on range le matériel de sauvetage, les lances, les clés pour ouvrir l’eau ou les ascenseurs, le matériel respiratoire… explique Philippe. Il faut savoir que le site fait environ 150.000m2, d’où l’utilité d’un chariot!» Après une petite pause-café vient la revue de la théorie par l’un des pompiers. Réanimation cardio-pulmonaire, mise en sécurité des victimes, triangle de feu; à chaque matin son volet théorique. «Il y a un infirmier pompier qui revoit l’aspect médical, par exemple. Ce peut être de la théorie générale, mais aussi plus spécifique en fonction des bâtiments de l’OTAN.» Commence ensuite la journée à proprement parler: «Il y a d’abord le contrôle des hydrants et extincteurs; il faut vérifier les accès et le bon fonctionnement des conduites d’eau et voir si les extincteurs sont toujours en place, s’ils ne sont pas vides… On contrôle également les mécanismes des portes de secours. C’est un bâtiment en perpétuelle mutation donc

A day at the Fire Unit “We start around seven am, like any other fire station, with the control and maintenance of vehicles and equipment. We have an ambulance, a fire truck and an electric truck where we keep the rescue equipment, spears, keys to open water or elevators, respiratory equipment … explains Philippe. You must know that the site is about 150,000m2, hence the usefulness of a truck!” After a short coffee break, one of the fire fighters carries out the theory. CPR, safety of the victims, fire triangle; each morning has its theoretical module. “There is a nurse fire fighter that reviews the medical aspects, for example. It can be of general theory, but also more specific to NATO buildings.” Then begins the day itself: “There is first the control of hydrants and extinguishers; we must check the access and the proper functioning of the water lines and see if extinguishers are still in place, if they are not empty… We also control the emergency exits mechanisms. It is a building in perpetual mutation, therefore must be systematically adapt to risks and react accordingly” explains Philippe. In the meanwhile, some members of the team, trainers, provide courses (on the use of defibrillators or resuscitation techniques for example): “trainers have a certified degree recognised by the European Resuscitation Council, says the Chief Inspector. They must give a number of free courses to keep their certification.” In parallel, other train in the sports centre. “There is a turnover, because everyone needs to train one hour a day. We are subject to a sports test once a year with an obligation of result.” Worrying? Not really, says Philippe: “A few people here have an athletic background, sometimes even at the professional level.” Finally, when the replacement team arrives at around seven pm, it is time to pack up (except in case of an intervention, of course). All the events of the day are recounted during the change of shifts. The team relaying generally arrives 30 minutes earlier for this exchange of information, crucial to the good continuation. “The difficulty, summarises Philippe, is to pin all activities, not to let people who are training without instructors, and since we are only a small section, sometimes we must adapt. Another problem is the language; we must juggle between different nationalities to communicate with them in case of emergency. During the training sessions, for example, we try to have a translator in order to explain the more specific terms. Each delegation also has designated officials to explain what to do in case of fire or evacuation drills.”

Pendant ce temps, certains membres dans l’équipe, formateurs, donnent cours (sur l’utilisation des défibrillateurs ou encore les techniques de réanimation par exemple): «Les formateurs ont un diplôme agréé reconnu par l’European Rescucitation Council, explique l’inspecteur chef. Ils doivent donner un certain nombre de formations gratuites pour garder leur agréation.» En parallèle, d’autres s’entraînent au centre sportif. «Il y a un roulement, car chacun doit s’entraîner une heure par jour. Nous sommes soumis à un test sportif une fois par an avec une obligation de résultat.» Inquiétant? Pas vraiment, cède Philippe: «Beaucoup ici ont un passé sportif, parfois même au niveau professionnel.» Enfin, quand l’équipe montante arrive vers 19h, il est temps de plier bagage (sauf en cas d’intervention, bien entendu). Tous les événements de la journée sont relatés lors du changement de garde. L’ équipe qui relaie arrive généralement 30 minutes plus tôt pour avoir cet échange d’information, primordial pour la bonne continuation. «La difficulté, résume Philippe, c’est de goupiller toutes les activités, de ne pas laisser les gens qui sont en formation sans instructeurs, et comme nous ne sommes qu’une petite section, parfois il faut s’adapter. Un autre problème, c’est la langue; il faut savoir jongler avec les différentes nationalités pour pouvoir communiquer avec eux en cas d’urgence. Lors des formations par exemple, on essaie d’avoir un traducteur pour pouvoir expliquer les termes plus spécifiques. Chaque délégation possède d’ailleurs ses responsables désignés pour pouvoir expliquer quoi faire en cas d’incendie ou d’exercices d’évacuation.»

ts port and trade have promoted its prosperity for centuries, while its orderly and symmetrical urbanism provides sceneries of great beauty, such as the gothic neighbourhood, the area of Las Ramblas or modernist Passeig de Gràcia. All the area around the latter, privileged part of the Eixample, is asserted as the residence of the Barcelona bourgeoisie in the late 19th century, coinciding with the emergence and diffusion of modernism. Later, thanks to the 1992 Olympic Games, Barcelona became a city not only elegant and harmonious, but also ready to satisfy the just about any craving; currently, one can find more than 35,000 shops as well as a highly qualitative cuisine.

Modern(ist) architecture… In Catalonia, Modernism enjoyed artistic qualities and an extraordinary intensity. Its influence remains very present in Barcelona and can be observed on the great monuments, but also on sliding doors and facades, in houses vestibules, or shops ornamented with rich decoration of the style, which included new materials nicely worked; glass, wood, forged iron, ceramic… And who says modernism necessarily says Antoni Gaudí, without a doubt the most universal artist of Catalan modernism, of which Barcelona can boast to be the major décor and the principal evidence of his work. The architect, who used freely and his own way Muslim art and Gothic and baroque styles signed works now classified as world heritage by UNESCO: the Park and the Palau Güell, Casa Milà, commonly known as “la Pedrera”, the unfinished Sagrada Família, Casa Vicens, Casa Batlló and the Cripta de la Colònia Güell.

…and countless hot spots Fans of shopping, you will love Barcelona! A mix of tradition and innovation characterise the most varied commercial offering. Small popular outdoor markets and shops of antique boutiques, craft workshops to design facilities and contemporary art galleries, the possibilities are virtually unlimited. A must, the Shopping Line there extends over five kilometres, from Port Vell to the high part of the Diagonal Avenue, passing through La Rambla, the Barri Gòtic (Gothic neighbourhood) and Catalunya square. Moreover, the area where is located the Quadrat d’Or (the Golden Square) where you can admire the most modernist Barcelona, is also a very unique business and trade centre in the city. This centre mainly centres around the Passeig de Gràcia and La Rambla de Catalunya. Bulevar Rosa is probably the most representative trade gallery of this area. All along the Passeig de Gràcia, you will find most international brands such as Burberry, Chanel, Mango and Zara, and flagship stores of Spanish designers such as Antoni Miró, Andres Sardà, or Purificación García. The Rambla de Catalunya, lined with lime trees and paved with terraces of cafes, also offers many shops of major brands, but also art galleries, bookstores and theatres. Its large central space for pedestrians, in the shadow of the 300 years old trees, allows making purchases in an incomparable environment. Pas étonnant dès lors qu’on y dénombre ici pas moins de 21 restaurants étoilés au guide Michelin. «Le fait est que, ces dernières années, Barcelone est devenu un must international au niveau culinaire» explique Pere Duran, DG de l’office de tourisme. De la traditionnelle paëlla de riz aux savoureux tapas à déguster accompagnés d’un bon verre de vin ou de cava, la qualité offerte à Barcelona n’a d’égal que la compétitivité de ses tarifs. To buy or not to buy? Counting on the rental income of a property on the Belgian coast seemed to have become an illusion. Those who – still – want to place their money there rely more on long-term value and ‘pleasure’ investment. That being said, some types of goods and some towns may still be worth it. Today, a low cost plane ticket to a destination in the South of France or even the Maghreb is sometimes less expensive than a round trip train ticket to Oostend or Blankenberge. The ticket quickly pays, and sun is guaranteed! And Nice is not that much more expensive than Knokke, where a simple coffee on a terrace often exceeds three euros!”

Les stations offrant un maximum d’activités et de services sont à privilégier, comme celles qui assurent une activité commerçante à l’année. En conclusion, l’achat réfléchi d’un bien plus coûteux initialement mais répondant à tous les critères de la demande attire sensiblement les locataires, de la même manière qu’il l’a fait pour ses propriétaires. » Ces contraintes pousseraient plutôt pour l’instant les accros au grand air iodé et aux promenades dans les dunes à opter pour la location d’une chambre d’hôtes à la semaine ou au week-end prolongé. Les offres en ligne sont d’ailleurs légion pour l’instant du Zoute à La Panne, et le service compris de plus en plus attrayant. Une autre formule qui fait florès est de réserver un hôtel à Bruges lorsque les offres de prix sont alléchantes et de gagner la côte depuis là, en train ou en voiture (une demi-heure). Cette option permet, si le temps est incertain, de flâner dans les ruelles ou sur les canaux de la Venise du Nord: l’animation y est permanente en toute saison. On peut ainsi, pour un forfait de 500 € à 1.000 €, passer un week-end prolongé à deux ou en famille sans s’engager à long terme dans un achat qu’on n’est pas certain de ne pas regretter.

Côte vs low cost Louer un appartement de vacances en Belgique des mois avant la haute-saison est une pratique qui n’a plus guère la cote, surtout vu la qualité des étés belges ces dernières années. « Mais la Côte belge reste prise d’assaut quand le soleil apparaît, pas d’illusion à avoir » souligne Claude, qui vit à Ostende depuis 20 ans. « Aujourd’hui, un billet low cost pour une destination au sud de la France ou même au Maghreb revient parfois moins cher qu’un aller-retour en train vers Ostende ou Blankenberge. On a vite fait de rentabiliser son billet, soleil garanti! Et Nice n’est pas beaucoup plus chère que Knokke, où le simple café en terrasse dépasse souvent les trois euros! »

Belgian seaside’s Smart buys Middelkerke Middelkerke shares with Blankenberge the place of master-purchase on the average price of apartments: the lowest of the coast, which is €220,000. Same observation, indeed, for the villas and houses. Not that the commune suffered a withdraw, its market is even higher: about 10% of increase for these properties between 2009 and 2010. Middelkerke partage avec Blankenberge la place de maître-achat concernant le prix moyen des appartements: le plus bas de la côte, soit 220.000 €. Même constat, d’ailleurs, pour les villas et les maisons. Non pas que la commune ait subi une déclasse, son marché évolue même à la hausse: environ 10% de hausse pour ces biens immobiliers entre 2009 et 2010.

Newport If you haven’t visited Newport in the last few years, you may be surprised: the municipality has been revamped. As the apartments sales, figures from the FPS support its good health. In fact, in five years, the prices have increased by 46% and verge on the €285,000, a place of choice after Koksijde and Knokke. Careful though, this average does not consider the situation of the property. The sea view is a criteria that can double the approximate price. Gagnez de la place. Pensez aux chaises repliables – elles existent sous des formes et dans des teintes aussi diversifiées qu’imaginables –, que vous pouvez ensuite accrocher au mur. Facile!

La chambre Les tons neutres à base de gris, de brun, de beige. Si vous voulez une pièce calme, c’est le bon choix! Mais pour ne pas sombrer, à la longue, dans l’ennui, privilégiez, au bout de quelques années, des tissus colorés (housses de couette, taies d’oreiller, coussins...) qui égaieront l’ensemble. The idea To resolve the situation, the contractor (ARAMARK) decided to introduce a system called “Scan & Go”. This new process consists of a pre-paid card, that does not have to be inserted into the terminal (such as with Bancontact and Proton) but only has to be scanned at the till quickly, avoiding as such the introduction of a pin code. This can be recharged via terminals that will be installed early April, in both the self-service and cafeteria area. There will be no expiration date, no minimum recharge and the staff members can take their credits from the card whenever they chose. The idea is for it to be simple, fast and the system should reduce the waiting times at the tills. There will be a learning curve and the restaurant committee will be there to help during this transition period.

The transition During the week of the 2nd to the 6th of April, an information booth will be installed at the ARAMARK catering areas to explain the functioning of the new system and allow the staff to register. Once the process is completed, a numbered card linked to an account will be given to the staff members, free of charge. If the card is lost or breaks, as with any credit card, the remaining balance may be blocked and then transferred to a new card (replacement cards have a small fee). For those who miss the initial launch, staff can receive their card at the reception of the Staff Centre. The system itself will be operational from the 16 April. The current payment system (cash and Proton) will remain in place during the transition period, before being gradually replaced on some cash registers with the “Scan & Go” system. The idea is that more and more staff use the “Scan & Go” and the visitors use the tills for cash and other payment forms.

Ce nouveau procédé consiste en une carte à puce prépayée qui ne doit pas être insérée dans le terminal (comme Bancontact et Proton) mais dois seulement être scannée rapidement à la caisse, évitant l’introduction d’un code PIN. Cette dernière sera rechargeable via des bornes qui seront installées début avril tant à la cafeteria qu’au libre-service. Il n’y aura pas de date limite de validité, pas de montant minimum de recharge et les membres du personnel pourront reprendre leurs crédits de la carte quand ils le voudront. L’idée est que ce soit simple, rapide et le système devrait réduire le temps d’attente aux caisses. Il y aura une période d’apprentissage et le comité du restaurant sera là pour aider durant la transition.

La transition Durant la semaine du 2 au 6 avril, un stand d’information sera installé à l’espace de restauration ARAMARK pour expliquer le fonctionnement du nouveau système et permettre au personnel de s’inscrire. Une fois les formalités terminées, une carte numérotée liée au compte du membre du personnel lui sera alors remise gratuitement. Si la carte se perd ou se casse, comme toute carte de crédit, le solde restant pourra être bloqué puis transféré sur une nouvelle carte, (les cartes de remplacement auront un léger coût). Pour ceux qui manqueraient le lancement initial, le personnel pourra ensuite s’inscrire à la réception du Centre du Personnel de l’OTAN. Le système à proprement parler sera opérationnel pour le 16 avril. Le système de paiement actuel (liquide et Proton) restera disponible, le temps d’effectuer la transition, avant d’être progressivement remplacé sur certaines caisses par le principe de «Scan & Go». L’idée est que de plus en plus de membres du personnel utilisent le «Scan & Go» tandis que les visiteurs utilisent les caisses pour régler en liquide et via les autres modes de paiements.

Braised pork with white beans Preparation time: 2 hours Ingredients ❙ 4 pork chops, boned and degreased (+/- 160 g each) ❙ 2 slices rindless, lean smoked bacon (finely chopped) ❙ 250 g of dry white beans ❙ 1 chopped onion ❙ 400 g of crushed tomatoes ❙ 2 tbsps rown sugar ❙ 3 Jamaica pepper berries ❙ 2 tbsps Dijon mustard ❙ 25 cl British dark lager ❙ Worcestershire sauce ❙ Cider vinegar ❙ 1 tbsp sunflower oil

The beans 1- Soak the dried beans in cold water for 12 hours, drain and rinse. 2- Place the beans in a saucepan and cover with twice the volume of cold water. Cover and boil. Skim regularly. 3- Reduce heat, cover and leave to simmer for 45 min. The beans should be just tender.

The meat 1- Heat the oil in a slow cooker and brown the onions over a medium heat before adding the pork chops for five minutes, turning them regularly. 2- Season very lightly with salt and pepper and then add the lager, crushed tomatoes, 5 ml of Worcestershire sauce, the brown sugar and the Jamaican pepper. 3- Cover and leave to simmer for about an hour.

The presentation 1- Drain the hot, cooked beans and incorporate them in the slow cooker. 2-Add the mustard and the fine chopped bacon. Cover. 3-Cook on very low heat for another hour. 4-Adjust seasoning. Serve with hash brown potatoes.

Les haricots 1- Faire tremper les haricots blancs secs 12h dans l’eau froide, puis égoutter et rincer. 2- Placer les haricots dans une casserole et couvrir de deux fois le volume en eau froide. Couvrir et porter à ébullition en écumant régulièrement. 3- Diminuer le feu, couvrir et laisser frémir pendant 45 min. Les haricots doivent être juste tendre

La viande 1- Faire chauffer l’huile de tournesol dans une cocotte et y faire revenir à feu moyen les oignons suivis des côtes de porcs pendant environ cinq minutes, en prenant soin de retourner régulièrement les côtes. 2- Assaisonner très légèrement de sel et de poivre, ajouter la bière brune, les tomates concassées, 5 ml de sauce Worcestershire, la cassonade et le poivre de la Jamaïque. 3- Couvrir et laisser frémir pendant environ une heure.

La présentation 1- Égoutter les haricots cuits et chauds et les incorporer dans la cocotte. 2- Ajouter la moutarde et le lard finement émincé. Couvrir. 3- Laisser cuire à feu très doux pendant une heure supplémentaire. 4- Rectifier l’assaisonnement. Accompagner de pommes de terre.

Apple and cinnamon crumble Preparation time: 30 minutes 1 serve

Ingredients ❙ 1 peeled apple, cut into pieces ❙ 40 g flour ❙ 25 g sugar ❙ 25 g unsalted, softened butter ❙ Vanilla ice cream

1- Place the chunks of apple in a small oven dish and sprinkle with cinnamon. 2- Mix together the flour, sugar and butter, put the obtained dough on the apples and oven 15 minutes at 175°C. 3-Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. 1- Mettre les morceaux de pomme dans un petit plat allant au four et saupoudrer de cannelle. 2- Mélanger la farine, le sucre fin et le beurre, mettre la pâte obtenue sur les morceaux de pommes et enfourner 15 minutes à 175°C. 3- Servir tiède accompagné d’une boule de glace vanille.

Yes, you’ve heard it before; we are what we eat. Most of us don’t quite believe it, but truth is food can ward off a variety of ailments. What we eat determines the composition of our cells, blood and even hormones. Doctor Sonia Lejeune, your SC Medical Centre’s gynaecologist, explains the potential of nutrition in her field of expertise. Audrey: First of all, how did you end up at the Staff Centre? Dr. Lejeune: Speaking English allowed me to work with several embassies and I am accustomed to expatriate patients. When NATO STAFF CENTRE’s Medical Centre team decided to appoint a gynaecologist mastering English, the health unit of one of these embassies put me in contact with them. Audrey: Can you explain the specificity of your background? Dr. Lejeune: I am specialised in surgery and oncology, but I am also a great epicurean and, about ten years ago, I began to take cooking classes. At first, I took courses in a classic young restaurateurs’ restaurant, then in a macrobiotic restaurant. I then began to eat differently and that is that I really realised the influence that nutrition can have on health. It transformed me! In parallel, I had started nutritherapy via several university courses. Since then, I am much more satisfied with the care I can provide to patients.

Audrey: Tout d’abord, comment êtes-vous arrivée au Staff Centre? Dr Lejeune: Le fait de parler anglais m’ a permis de travailler avec plusieurs ambassades et je suis habituée à soigner des patientes expatriées. Lorsque l’ équipe du centre médical du CP de l’OTAN a eu le désir de s’adjoindre une gynécologue maîtrisant l’anglais, c’est l’unité de santé d’une de ces ambassades qui m’a mise en contact avec eux. Audrey: Pouvez-vous expliquer aux lecteurs quelle est la particularité de votre formation? Dr Lejeune: Je suis spécialisée en chirurgie et en oncologie, mais je suis également une grande gourmande et, il y a environ dix ans, j’ai commencé à suivre des cours de cuisine. Au début, j’ai pris des cours

dans un restaurant classique de jeunes restaurateurs, puis dans un restaurant macrobiotique. Je me suis alors mise à manger différemment et c’est là que j’ai vraiment réalisé l’influence que la nutrition pouvait avoir sur la santé. Ça m’a transformée! En parallèle, j’avais commencé à me former en nutrithérapie via plusieurs formations universitaires. Depuis, je suis beaucoup plus satisfaite des soins que je peux prodiguer aux patientes. Audrey: Quel est le lien entre gynécologie et nutrition? Dr Lejeune: La gynécologie est un des domaines de la médecine où la nutrition a un grand impact possible. Beaucoup de pathologies y sont liées à un déséquilibre des acides gras polyinsaturés. Vous savez, les fameux omégas 3 et 6? D’autres sont causés par une acidose tissulaire. Ces types de problèmes sont relativement simples à rééquilibrer via des modifications de l’alimentation. Dans d’autres cas il s’agit de troubles liés au stress. En effet, les ovaires subissent l’influence des hormones cérébrales, ce qui explique le lien entre le stress et les pathologies ovariennes et utérines. Alors bien souvent les modifications alimentaires ne suffisent pas et il faut y adjoindre des compléments alimentaires à base de magnésium, de vitamines B et parfois de précurseurs de la sérotonine. Ces rééquilibrages prennent parfois du temps, mais cela en vaut la peine. Audrey: Justement, quels sont les avantages liés à cette approche?

Audrey: What is the link between nutrition and gynaecology? Dr. Lejeune: Gynaecology is one of the areas of medicine where nutrition has a great potential impact. Many diseases are related to an imbalance of polyunsaturated fatty acids. You know, the famous Omega 3 and 6? Others are caused by tissue acidosis. These types of issues are relatively simple to rebalance via changes in food. In other cases, it is stress-related disorders. Actually, the ovaries are influenced by brain hormones, which explains the link between stress and ovarian and uterine pathologies. Then often dietary changes are not enough and must be completed with dietary supplements, either magnesium or Vitamin B based, and sometimes precursor of serotonin. These modifications sometimes take time, but it is worth the effort. Audrey: Precisely, talking of which, what are the benefits of this approach? Dr. Lejeune: It is not only a treatment with very few side effects, but also inexpensive and, once the food changes are acquired, the patient

Dr Lejeune: Il s’agit non seulement d’une thérapeutique comportant peu d’effets secondaires, mais également peu coûteuse et, une fois les modifications alimentaires acquises, la patiente veille en quelque sorte elle-même à sa santé. J’apprécie beaucoup cette face de la problématique; donner aux patientes les outils pour qu’elles puissent se prendre en mains. Elles repartent avec de nouvelles compétences, et non pas avec une pilule miracle qu’elles devront se faire prescrire encore et encore… Audrey: Pouvez-vous citer un exemple de cas où la nutrition joue un rôle prépondérant? Dr Lejeune: La ménopause. Apparaissent alors de nombreux changements physiologiques et pathologies à forte connotation nutritionnelle: prise de poids, troubles du métabolisme, problèmes cardio-vasculaires et dégénératifs, ostéoporose... Ceci s’inscrit aussi dans un contexte psychologique pouvant favoriser les troubles de l’image et du comportement alimentaire. C’est dire que les préoccupations nutritionnelles des femmes sont importantes à cette époque de la vie.

herself can sort of ensure her own health. I really appreciate this side of the issue; give patients the tools so they can handle themselves. They leave with new skills and not with a miracle pill that they need to be prescribed again and again… Audrey: Can you mention an example of a case where nutrition plays a major role? Dr. Lejeune: Menopause. Then many physiological changes and diseases appear, with a strong nutritional connotation: weight gain, metabolism disorders, cardiovascular and degenerative problems, osteoporosis... This is also part of a psychological context that can alter self-image and create feeding disorders. This tells you how nutritional concerns of women are important at this time of life. Audrey: Can it be said that nutrition influences the incidence of cancer?

Dr. Lejeune: A recent scientific study managed to demonstrate a net decrease in the risk of breast cancer after menopause by avoiding alcohol intake, overweight, and by conducting regular physical exercises. This decrease of the risk was greater than anything we could get with the drugs currently on the market!

Audrey: Peut-on dire que la nutrition influence les incidences de cancer? Dr Lejeune: Une étude scientifique récentes a ainsi permis de démontrer une nette diminution du risque de cancer du sein après la ménopause en évitant la prise d’alcool, le surpoids, et en effectuant des exercices physiques réguliers. Cette diminution du risque était supérieure à tout ce que l’on avait pu obtenir avec les médicaments actuellement sur le marché!

Exfoliate 1. Y ou will need remove those dead skin cells suffocating the healthy

underlying layers and giving you that gloomy skin tone. A weekly body scrub is a good start. Pay special attention to rough areas. 2. Use a body brush abrasive enough to remove dry skin. If you are looking for a milder, more hydrating option, go for a cream-based sugar scrub. 3. Never use either of the above on your face or neck as they are far too harsh. Keep them for the skin below the cleavage. 4. C onsider booking a face treatment at the Beauty Centre once a month, and while you’re there, ask Monique about microdermabrasion.

Fight UV damages 5. A void direct sunlight immediately after a scrub. 6. T o avoid harmful UV rays, start by incorporating daily sun protection into

your everyday routine. If you are not a huge fan of creams, change your daily moisturiser for one containing a high SPF. 7. I f you are aware of the damages sun can cause but don’t want to give up glowing skin, try self-tanners. You can even blend some in your moisturiser.

Moisturise 8. Th ere is no better time to moisturise your skin than directly after

exfoliating, shaving or tanning, although most experts recommend applying moisturiser morning and night. 9. M oisturising masks and wraps will also help nurture your skin and provide minerals and antioxidants to fight against free radicals.

Beyond the pleasure of moving to dynamic rythms, a Zumba® session brings together slow, then fast rhythms, resistance exercises, and Latin dance moves that improve physical condition and make some muscles work that you didn’t even know existed! The alternation of phases of acceleration on fast music - such as merengue - and phases of recovery on softer music (salsa, cumbia) allows to increase and reduce the heart rate to constant moves. The body tones up while burning calories. «The good thing about Zumba is that you don’t have to be good, adds Thomas, the importance is not to be in rhythm; it is simply to have fun while you keep moving”.

Here we go again! At first, the idea may seem a little mad. “Before one of Mrs Rasmussen’s charity balls, we thought: why not launch Zumba classes in NATO? Here in Denmark, explains the instructor, people are not used to going to their fitness classes during their lunch break, so I was very surprised to see so many participants in the first two sessions organised! Between 50 and 60 people came, it was impressive.” Given the success, the Staff Centre team is currently struggling to find a time slot to offer courses on a regular basis. Until then, the next Zumba® Fitness Party hosted by Thomas Evers Poulsen will take place 13 March 12.30 pm in the Omni sports hall. To register, go to the Staff Centre’s reception desk.

On remet ça! À la base, l’idée pouvait sembler un peu folle. «Avant l’un des bals de charité de Mme Rasmussen, on s’est dit: pourquoi pas lancer des cours de Zumba à l’OTAN? Chez moi au Danemark, explique l’instructeur, les gens n’ont pas l’habitude de faire du fitness pendant leur temps de midi, donc j’ai été très surpris de voir autant de participants aux deux premières séances organisées! Entre 50 et 60 personnes sont venus, c’était impressionnant.» Vu le succès rencontré, l’équipe du Centre du Personnel se démène actuellement afin de trouver une plage horaire qui permette d’offrir des cours sur une base régulière. D’ici là, la prochaine Zumba® Fitness Party animée par Thomas Evers Poulsen aura lieu le 13 mars prochain à 12h30 à la salle omnisports. More than a simple relaxation technique, this ancestral method engages the conversation with the therapist and particularly with oneself. For Natalie, efficiency cannot exist without sharing. Thus, the first session inevitably starts with a conversation with the patient focusing on the reasons behind his visit, at the term of which the therapist devises a program spread over several sessions depending on the dysfunctions. “Based on the response, I adapt and refine the treatment; it requires trust from the patients, but more than that, they listen to themselves,” says Natalie. Shiatsu is most often practised on the floor, on a futon, through flexible and loose garments. Although many perceive the technique as nothing more than a deep massage, Natalie takes many notes and will carry out extensive searches between each visit to adapt to the physical

Ces pressions, poursuit la thérapeute, s’exercent sur des points précis du corps, qui sont reliés aux organes internes, comme en acupuncture.»

Viennent alors les problèmes que l’on découvre en cours de route car, si certains perçoivent la technique comme un massage profond, sans plus, Natalie, elle, prend des notes et effectue entre chaque visite des recherches approfondies afin de pouvoir s’adapter aux réactions physiques et émotionnelles du patient. «J’essaie d’aller un maximum vers le shiatsu thérapeutique, précise Natalie, bien qu’ici la plupart des gens recherchent principalement un moment de relaxation. Le thérapeutique est certes plus austère, mais il y a plus d’interaction avec le patient, plus de dialogue.»

and emotional reactions of the patient. “I try to push the therapeutic shiatsu as much as I can, says Natalie, although, here, most of the people are mainly looking for a moment of relaxation. The therapeutic is certainly more austere, but there is more interaction with the patient, more dialogue”.

Natalie a également développé une variante sur chaise ergonomique, basée sur le massage d’entreprise, d’une durée plus courte et axée sur les méridiens: «C’est un shiatsu que je conseille à toute personne souffrant de problèmes de dos, de raideur des épaules ou de maux de tête récurrents; il assouplit, ressource, oxygène, draine et active la circulation sanguine.» Sans compter qu’on peut facilement se le permettre sur son temps de midi, avec une durée moyenne de 30 minutes!

Relaxing or therapeutic? “Treating yourself to a shiatsu gives the sensation of being wrapped in a comforting presence, explains Natalie, it promotes complete relaxation of the body, mind and spirit.” In a relaxing shiatsu, the work focuses on breathing, stretching, deep relaxation of the back muscles and pressure on specific areas that simultaneously slow the heart rate and deepen breathing. Natalie has also developed a variant astride an ergonomic chair, based on on-site chair massage. This shorter massage focuses on the meridians: “It is a shiatsu I recommend to any person suffering from back pain, stiffness in the shoulders or recurrent headache problems; it relaxes, resources, oxygenates, drains and activates blood flow.” Not to mention that it can easily be fitted into any lunchtime, with an average duration of 30 minutes!

Rappelons qu’il ne s’agit pas ici d’une médecine à l’efficacité prouvée, néanmoins, des améliorations notoires auraient pu être observées: «pour estomper des soucis chroniques comme l’asthme, la toux, le reflux gastrique, les états nauséeux, les tensions musculaires, les douleurs articulaires, les migraines et maux de tête, les torticolis, l’eczéma, ou encore pour faciliter la digestion ou le transit intestinal.» Il faut compter environ six à dix séances pour qu’une sensation de bien-être s’installe.

“On the other hand, while therapeutic shiatsu proves perhaps less pleasant at first, it often prevents certain problems and can even contribute to healing. It’s a different approach” indicates the enthusiastic therapist. Without being scientifically proven as efficient, notable improvements have been observed: “to alleviate chronic ailments such as asthma, coughing, gastric reflux, nauseas, muscle and joint pain, migraines and headaches, stiff neck, eczema, or even to facilitate digestion or intestinal transit.” It takes approximately six to ten sessions for a feeling of wellbeing to settle.

What benefits? For Natalie, it is primarily awareness: of how we feel, behave and even breathe. But beware; to reap all the benefits from the therapy, patients need to be willing to listen to themselves. “Then breathing deepens, a sense of lightness sets in thanks to an increased blood flow, sleep improves, mood as well, muscles relax, stress decreases and energy gradually comes back.” The spirit opens to the world; the patient starts to feel capable of influencing his physical and emotional health and takes the necessary steps to achieve wellbeing. vant même de s’asseoir au volant de cette nouvelle Jaguar, deux atouts ne manqueront pas de séduire les acheteurs indécis, à la recherche d’arguments rationnels pour fonder leur choix: ses émissions combinées de CO2 (149 g/km), très compétitives fiscalement, et sa consommation moyenne normalisée (5,4 litres/100 km). Ce nouveau modèle d’entrée de gamme XF affiche donc clairement ses atouts pour séduire une nouvelle frange de clients très attentifs aux récents surcoûts fiscaux. Il rivalise d’emblée avec les meilleurs de sa classe (2 à 2,2 litres de cylindrée en boîte automatique), juste derrière la BMW 520d (5,2 l, 137 g/km). La XF 2,2 est d’ailleurs la seule, avec la bavaroise, à offrir 8 rapports automatiques et un Stop/ Start intelligent très bien adapté. Et si la motorisation retenue, d’origine PSA, se partage aujourd’hui sous bien des capots (Land Rover Freelander, Peugeot 508 ou Citroën C5), les mises au point, les puissances et couples diffèrent ici positivement pour réveiller cette berline de 1.745 kg à propulsion arrière. Chez Jaguar, la modification majeure de ce quatre cylindres de base (163 ch) découle de son implantation longitudinale dans la XF. En outre, l’isolation a été étudiée de manière à isoler de façon optimale l’habitacle, particulièrement soigné. As the essence of a test remains its critics, we shall mention the inevitable adjustment of drivers to the multimedia environment offered by the on-board computer. Although particularly comprehensive, it proves sophisticated, and sometimes fails in the user-friendly department. So drivers should really explore its wide range possibilities and intricacies before hitting the road serenely. The audio equipment (16 broadcasters) proves remarkable for listening to music (radio, CD, DVD, iPod, USB) or using the telephone (hands-free Bluetooth with contacts display on colour LCD screen). Other small areas for improvements include the ear guard of the roof, which is measured, but that does not limits access; and the trunk lid. Although the latter may be slightly restrictive, the volume on offer remains average. Finally, the price remains falls in line with comparable productions from the competition, particularly that the guarantees prove much more extensive than that of its German contenders. However, the residual value is more difficult to identify.

In the first of a new series tackling key questions on education in Brussels, we met Erica Lutes, educational advisor and program manager at Fulbright Belgium. DAVID: I’m a European expat parent with kids studying here in Brussels. Should I consider sending any of my children to college in the US? Or is it a dream too far? ERICA: You should absolutely consider sending your children to study in the United States. The United States is world-renowned for the high quality of its higher education. The large number of institutions located in the United States also means that potential students are able to choose from a wide variety of universities and colleges.

ERICA: I used to work on Wall Street before coming to Belgium and then pursued graduate work at the University of Leuven. ERICA: One major aspect of Fulbright’s work is our annual Brussels College Night, which provides Belgian students with an opportunity to meet face-to-face with American college admissions advisors. Last year, over 500 interested students and parents were able to meet with the representatives of over 75 universities with campuses in both the United States and Europe. The event also includes a panel discussion where students and their parents can ask a group of experts for information on the US application process. DAVID: Is a university career in the US really for everyone? What are the challenges and opportunities for young people thinking about studying overseas? ERICA: There are many opportunities for students interested in pursuing their studies in the United States. That being said, the American university system is indeed very different from its counterparts across Europe. The visa process, the application process, and the test and transcript requirements are often daunting to potential students. Luckily, Fulbright provides assistance on all of these issues and works to make the process as easy as possible.

DAVID: Can you attend a Belgian school and get into a US college? ERICA: Even if you have attended a Belgian school, it is entirely possible to study at an American university. While American schools may have different requirements than their European equivalents, they are generally very open to bringing in students from Europe. There are some special steps Belgian students interested in studying in the US will have to take, and Fulbright can provide these students with more information on the process.

DAVID: Pouvez-vous nous expliquer ce que Fulbright fait et comment, en pratique, il assiste les étudiants désireux d’étudier aux États-Unis? DAVID: Of course, sooner or later, you knew I was going to ask about costs. How does a family afford to cover the cost of sending their child to study in the US? ERICA: Students studying in the United States can apply for a variety of loans and scholarships to help cover the expenses of their education and housing. Eligible students should also consider applying for a Fulbright grant (Masters level and above), which will cover many of their expenses. Those students who are not eligible for a Fulbright grant should look into scholarships and loans offered by both their university as well as third parties. Fulbright has information on both our own grants as well as other financial aid opportunities.

Literature Public Enemies Michel Houellebecq & Bernard-Henri Levy Novelist Michel Houellebecq and philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy, two of today’s most controversial intellectual figures in Europe go pen to pen in a hilarious and revealing war of the words. They argue and disagree on pretty much everything. No matter how self-obsessed and ridiculous they appear at times, it is heartening to know that intellectual discourse and discord is still alive and kicking. As Houellebecq writes: “Everything separates us from one another, with the exception of one fundamental point: we’re both utterly despicable individuals.”

Valley of The Dolls Jacqueline Susann Before Sex and The City, Bridget Jones Diary and before “the story of small town girl moves to big city and finds love, fame, happiness then loses it all again” became a tired old cliché, there was Valley of The Dolls. Nobody has told such a sordid tale better though many have tried. This is one of the few novels about women written by a woman who shoots from the hip and writes from the heart. It dishes the dirt on Hollywood and the creeping surrender to celebrity and fame fixation. A book that truly deserves the description of cult classic.

Europeana A Brief . Patrick Ourednik Describing the cataclysmic political changes of the last century to shed light on the one to follow, Ourednik threads his way through subjects and statistics so disparate and yet so interconnected to the timeline of humanity. Barbie Dolls, Scientology, Internet, genocides... In a terrifying monologue, the author compares the banality of evil with the pleasantries of easily available disposable plastic goods and the ultimate absurdity that for all its progress, the world still can’t even agree on something so simple as what year it actually is.

Pet Sematary Bartleby & Co. Enrique Vila-Matas Marcelo once wrote a novel, but since then... nothing. He is one of many Bartleby’s in the book, the character from the same-named novella by Herman Melville whose mantra is, “I would prefer not to”. Marcelo, instead of writing, spends his time tracking down all the various Bartleby’s throughout literature, writers who preferred not to write and their intriguing reasons for not doing so. Referencing many wellknown authors and some imaginary ones, Marcelo provides the ultimate intellectual slacker stance. Light as a feather and both irreverent and thought provoking.

Stephen King Absolutely terrifying. Happily married with two adorable children and a lovable cat, Dr Louis Creed begins a new job in a new town. The house is beautiful, everybody’s happy, the cat purrs contentedly in a sunny window seat looking out onto the rolling Maine countryside. At the back of the house a well-kept path leads up to the cemetery and the deep dark woods. In the introduction, King even alludes to the possibility that everything he describes actually happened. Read in the daytime with ALL the lights on.

Debt: The First 5,000 David Graeber Anthropologist David Graeber challenges the accepted historical view that money replaced a bartering system. As he correctly points out, there is no evidence to support this axiom. Rather, for more than 5,000 years humans have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods. The world could be divided into debtors and creditors. Over time, virtual credit money was replaced by gold and the system as a whole went into decline. Un homme de tempérament. David Lodge Un roman biographique autour du personnage de H.G. Wells, mais aussi le portait de la société anglaise du début du siècle passé. Wells était un défenseur ardent de l’amour libre et, tout au long de sa vie, il a multiplié les conquêtes et les aventures. Avec des conséquences parfois négatives sur ses ambitions politiques, mais surtout négatives pour les femmes qui ont partagé sa vie et ses rêves d’un monde meilleur. Servi par la plume alerte d’un Lodge en grande forme, c’est un régal.

Le livre des enfants AS Byatt En 1895, on découvre la famille d’Olive Wellwood dans la campagne anglaise. Cette auteure de livres pour enfants à l’imagination foisonnante règne en souveraine sur un petit cercle d’intellectuels soucieux de sortir le peuple de l’ignorance et la pauvreté. Ses enfants grandissent dans un monde de contes de fées. On partage, grâce au travail d’orfèvre de Byatt, les rêves et les désillusions de toute cette communauté. Un très beau roman qui traite sur le moment où il faut la quitter.

Une année studieuse Anne Wiazemsky Alors qu’elle s’apprête à entamer des études de philosophie, Anne découvre Godard. Tout au long de cette année qui lui fait rencontrer les plus éminents représentants de son époque (Jean Vilar, Jeanne Moreau, Maurice Béjart, Jacques Rivette), elle raconte son histoire d’amour, tantôt chaotique, tantôt idyllique, avec celui qui a révolutionné le cinéma. Une plongée ébouriffante dans un monde en pleine mutation.

7 February to 23 September Marten Toonder’s centenary Marten Toonder, a comic books author and illustrator and novelist, has treated generations of readers with his series Panda and Tom Pouce, which were published in the daily papers in several countries. The exhibition at the Belgian Comic Strip Centre inaugurates an international year of celebrations dedicated to 20th century fabulist, born in Rotterdam in 1912, whose bust can be found in the Hague Museum of Literature. 23 March to 1 April Eurantica: Brussels fine art fair For 10 days, the Brussels fair, recognised for its eclecticism and modernity, will honour a selection of 150 Belgian and foreign galleries. Like the past seven editions, the fair boasts more than 30% new participants, thus widening the visual horizons with a particular focus on the XXth Century and primitive Arts. Today Eurantica is perceived seen as one of the key events of the North European arts sector. It positions itself as an innovative and contemporary fair focusing on refinement and eclecticism. Durant 10 jours le salon bruxellois, reconnu pour son éclectisme et sa modernité, met en lumière une sélection de 150 galeries belges et étrangères. Comme ce fut le cas lors des sept dernières éditions, le salon compte plus de 30% de nouveaux participants, ce qui élargit la part de découverte, tout particulièrement le style 20e siècle et celui des Arts premiers. SLICK now comes to Brussels with the same spirit that has made it such a thriving fair since its creation in Paris in 2006: innovation, dynamism and a severe selection. SLICK Brussels marks the first Belgium edition of the Slick contemporary art fair, hosting around fifty international galleries, selected on the basis of their innovative search for tomorrow’s most forceful artists, and more than thirty monumental projects.

Founded in 2002, the Brussels Design Market is a flea market exclusively devoted to design, essentially productions of the 50’s to early 80’s. About 50 exhibitors, professionals and enlightened amateurs, from Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Germany and Italy, will unpack their furniture and objects in a relaxed bric-a-brac spirit. The appointment is given to the public, merchants and collectors in the historical framework of the former harbour station of Tours & Taxis.

The plural woman with her metamorphoses hides away in our unconscious, questioning the collective memory.

Jeff Dunham Controlled Chaos Tour Jeff Dunham takes the art of ventriloquism to new heights and transforms it into a comedy experience that yields worldwide appeal. In April 2011, he became the first Englishspeaking comedian to sell out two shows at the Antwerp Sportpaleis. The phenomenon returns to Belgium with his new live show ‘Controlled Chaos’ at the Ethias Arena, where he performs his only show in the Benelux.

La Tentation d’Ève, au-delà d’un spectacle sur l’histoire de la femme à travers les siècles, parle de façon intime de l’énergie féminine, du féminin de l’être. Ce spectacle hybride, où s’entremêlent la danse, le théâtre du corps et d’objet, nous guide à travers la condition féminine et le symbolisme qu’elle enfante. La femme plurielle avec ses métamorphoses, dissimulée dans notre inconscient, questionne la mémoire collective.

Jeff Dunham a porté l’art du ventriloquisme à de nouveaux sommets et l’a transformé en une expérience comique qui a su charmer le monde entier. En avril 2011, il devint le premier comédien anglophone à faire deux fois salle comble au Sportpaleis Anvers. A European tour had been scheduled for a long time, and no one could foresee that the show would become a posthumous tribute to Michael Jackson. Producer Adrian Grant, an expert and a friend of the superstar, celebrates the work of the King of Pop. Unbridled succession of dances, songs and live performances of the musicians, it proves nothing less than a party in homage of the music, albeit not a theatrical farewell, but the celebration of a legend. La première du spectacle Thriller Live a eu lieu à Londres, il y a quatre ans. Une tournée européenne était prévue de longue date, sans que personne ne puisse imaginer que le spectacle deviendrait un hommage posthume à Michael Jackson.
