to all the readers and well-wishers of A-Desiflava Magazine. 2015 has started with a great news for all the followers of Shirdi Sai Baba in Hong Kong with the opening of a Shirdi Saibaba temple right in the heart of Kowloon. The Murti(statue) of Sai Baba really pulls your eyes with the devotional power and charisma of his real presence and blessings. The temple is open on all 7 days and every Thursday is considered as Baba's special day which is celebrated in full sway and mood by all the devotees and followers of Baba in Hong Kong. Don't forget to take your darshan and bring as many non-Indians to show them how our baba is a symbol of greatness and spirituality, in its purest form. In our FEATURED zone, we have a very interesting article written by a Lebanese-Canadian writer who wants to clarify the misconceptions that continue to haunt the peaceful religion of Islam, in today's day and age. Read our FEATURED article Islam vs. Terrorism on Pg12. Up next, in our POLITICS zone we talk about, what mistake's BJP made in New Delhi causing them a disastrous loss in the recent elections. After winning the elections Arvind Kejriwal rightly said one very important thing which is 'BJP's arrogant nature was the biggest reason for their loss'. Our Delhi correspondent and writer Parag Tipnis has shed some light on ‘How Arvind Kejriwal turned the opinion and why common man liked AAP more than BJP? In BEAUTY & WELLNESS, we have a sponsored article by The Nethersole School of Nursing, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, which talks about their drive against HIV-AIDS in Hong Kong. They are conducting educational talks, health check, educational booklets and road shows related to AIDS on ethnic radio, newspapers, temples and various locations in Hong Kong to cover the ethnic minority population of HK. Also this entire drive will be carried in different languages for the Hindi, Thai and Nepalese groups. Why don't such initiatives begin in India from a grass root level? In this Issue, I want to convey a special thanks to our guest columnist Faiz Qezilbash whose efforts and contribution will be reflected in every page of this magazine. A big thanks to you and long way to go with A-Desiflava my friend. With 2015 setting up right for me, I hope and wish that it sets up even better for all of you, may this year bring you lots of luck, success and happiness. So now read this magazine, share your comments and views and like Salman say’s in Big Boss, after reading the magazine ‘Do whatever you want to do’.

Shirdi 's

Sai Baba Now in Hong Kong

A

n epitome of love and compassion with devotees all over the globe, Shirdi’s Sai Baba is a symbol of greatness and spirituality, in it’s purest form.

Born in India in the late 19th century, Sai Baba arrived at the village of Shirdi in the Ahmednagar District of Maharashtra, British India (Source: Wikipedia), when he was about 16 years old. He slowly came into prominence, when the villagers in that region were enamored by this young boy who practiced such hard penance, and yet remained unperturbed by extreme weather conditions. It was his unbelievable inner strength and the ability to not fall prey to distractions of any kind, which made them recognize the saint that dwelled within him.

Page - 8

www.adesiflava.com

His devotees are not just restricted to Hindus and he is revered by Muslims, Christians and Zoroastrians alike. Every year thousands of devotees throng to Shirdi to seek Baba’s blessings and to catch a glimpse of his holy presence. We are very fortunate that Baba has graced us with his presence, here in Hong Kong. A-Desiflava had the privilege of meeting and speaking with the man who is single-handedly responsible for this amazing feat. Interview with Mr. Ramesh Amarnani, the founder of the first Shirdi Sai Baba temple in Hong Kong ADF: Good morning sir and thank you for speaking with us RA: Good morning and thank you for having me ADF: We would like to begin by congratulating you on this amazing achievement RA: Thank you, this is all thanks to Baba’s blessings ADF: Could you please tell us a little bit about yourself www.adesiflava.com

RA: I am originally from Mumbai and have been settled in Hong Kong with my family i.e. wife and son for the last 45 years now. I am a businessman and own and run a trading and manufacturing business. ADF: What is it that inspired you to build this temple? It this temple the result of an experience that changed your life? RA: My family and I have been devotees of Baba for the longest time. I used to regularly visit Shirdi with my parents, and for the last few years it was my dream to set-up a temple in Hong Kong. However I was unable to find the right location, until Baba decided to come himself (smiles) and everything just fell into place. This is not my temple, I’m just the caretaker. This is Baba’s temple and it is for everyone, regardless of what caste, creed or religion he or she belongs to. We will welcome everyone with open arms.

ADF: Have you visited Shirdi recently? RA: Yes I have. I visit Shirdi whenever I go to India. In fact I have a trip in the pipeline, since I have to go and thank Baba for giving me the strength to build this temple. ADF: Would you say that you are one of Baba’s most loyal devotees? RA: That is for Baba to decide (smiles) ADF: Our research tells us that you built this temple single- handedly, without taking any financial support from elsewhere. Kindly shed some light on the same. RA: Yes, that is correct. All the funds that were used towards the construction of this temple were my personal funds. However I received help in the form of encouragement and moral support from Mahinder Baba, who is one of the visiting priests from India and flew in especially to attend the inauguration of the temple. Also he was huge help with regards to all the purchasing that had to be done for the temple in India, since I’m not that clued in with the local market. Page - 9

On a personal level I received a lot of help and encouragement from my wife, who I would say proved to be the backbone of this amazing venture that I undertook. ADF: How long did it take you to actually set-up the temple? RA: It took about 7-8 months. I purchased this property, since it was not feasible to set-up the temple on rented premises, the reason being that once the rent contract ends, you have to move and it was not advisable to move Baba from one location to another. After the purchase came the refurbishment and the transformation of the property into a proper full-fledged temple. ADF:When was this temple formally opened to the general public for worship? RA: The temple was formally opened on the 29th of January, 2015. However we held havans on the 27th and the 28th of January. ADF: Will the temple have an official caretaker? Also what are it’s timings? RA: Ganesh Maharaj from India is the official priest and caretaker of the temple. The timings are 09:30 am till 12:30 pm and then from 6 pm till 8pm.The temple will be open 7 days a week.

ADF: Are you accepting any donations that will be used for the betterment of the temple? RA: No we are not. On the insistence of some devotees, we have kept a Dakshna box in the temple. All the money from this box will go directly to Baba’s account and can be used for charitable purposes. However all expenses connected to the temple i.e. prasad, refurbishment etc. will be my sole responsibility. ADF: What is your message for the people of Hong Kong? I don’t just mean Baba followers, but also people from other communities? RA: As I mentioned earlier, we will welcome everyone with open arms. They are free to visit the temple whenever they want and seek Baba’s blessings. I have Chinese friends in Thailand who came for the opening and also there is another group of friends who flew in from Australia. This goes to show that this temple is for everyone. “Baba sabka bhala kare” (smiles) ADF: Once again, our heartiest congratulations and may Baba shower you with his blessings. RA: Thank you, I think he already is (smiles) As told to our guest columnist

Islam vs. Terrorism UNVEILING THE TRUTH

On the 16th of December, 2014 the world witnessed one of the most horrific incidents in recent times. Nine gunmen affiliated with the Tehrik-i-Taliban (TTP) conducted a terrorist attack on the Army Public School in the Northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar, killing 145 people, including 132 schoolchildren (all boys), ranging between eight and eighteen years of age. The attacks were carried out in retaliation to the joint military offensive conducted by the Pakistan Armed Forces against various terrorist groups in North Waziristan (Source: Wikipedia). It was difficult to comprehend that human beings could actually do this to their own brethren. What made this incident even more gruesome was the fact, that most of the victims were young innocent children. In the wake of these attacks, the Pakistani Consulate in Hong Kong organised a candle light vigil on the 21st of December, 2014 at Statue Square on Hong Kong Island. The vigil was attended not only by Pakistanis and other members of the South Asian community, but by people of many nationalities and from different walks of life. Page - 12

The A-Desiflava team was also present at the vigil and it was our way of condemning this heinous act, and also showing our solidarity towards the victims and their families. As a magazine that cares deeply about its readers, we felt that it was our social responsibility to address this issue, and to unveil the truth behind this ugly and horrific picture, that has unfortunately tainted the religion of Islam in the eyes of the world. That is precisely what this article does, and we are extremely thankful to our guest writer Ms. Mariam Jomha for delivering this message in a very simple and heartfelt manner. Have you ever been on a bus with a bearded man wearing a long robe, carrying a knapsack or bag? Did you happen to ask yourself or wonder, maybe, it could be a bomb?Your answer is probablyYES. But why has society and the media stereotyped all Muslims as being possible ‘terrorist’ threats? Is Islam really a religion of terror, violence and killing? It’s time to really look for answers to this question, in both the Quran, which is

the Holy book of Islam, and the life and teachings of its messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him).

smile, is an act of charity and one of the best things a person can do is to greet someone with a smile.

READ. This was the very first verse of the Quran. Not kill nor fight, but read. Islam emphasizes the importance of educating oneself and says that “knowledge is light and ignorance is darkness”. It is ignorance that has led some socalled ‘Muslims’ to kill and spread terror and it is also ignorance that has led the rest of the world to label Islam as a religion of terror. First of all, the term “Islam” is closely related the word “peace” or “salam”. The Muslim greeting is “peace on you” instead of “hi” or “hello”. The messenger commanded his followers to spread peace amongst each other. He also said that a smile, YES a

Islam, being a religion that constantly calls for mercy and peace, is too often tagged with the label of terrorism. “Jihad” is the term almost always linked to violence and terrorism and is often misused to mean ‘Holy war’. It is one of the most manipulated concepts in Islam today. But, what exactly is jihad and what does the Quran say in regards to it? The literal definition of the word jihad is striving to achieve a goal. The Quranic definition, on the other hand, is striving with oneself and one’s money in the cause of God. At the individual level, this struggle is within oneself to be a person of virtue and to submit to God’s will.

www.adesiflava.com

The Prophet Muhammad, upon his return from a battle, told his men “Blessed are those who have performed the minor jihad and have yet to perform the major jihad. When asked, “what is the major jihad?” the Prophet replied: The jihad of the self, meaning fighting the evil within and stopping oneself from doing wrong which is a much greater battle.

Page - 13

So, what about physical jihad? When is war or going into battle allowed? To start with the Quran is clear in prohibiting all violence, unlawful killing and forcing others into Islam. Here are some verses from the Quran.

F EATURED -With regards to violence: “ .......... If they leave you alone, refrain from fighting you, and offer your peace, then God gives you no excuse to fight them” 4:90 “If they resort to peace, so shall you, and put your trust in God. He is the Hearer, the Omniscient.” 8:61 “do not aggress; God dislikes the aggressors.” 5:87

-With regards to killing: “You shall not kill any person - for God has made life sacred - except in the course of justice. .....” 17:33 “......, we decreed for the Children of Israel that anyone who murders any person who had not committed murder or horrendous crimes, it shall be as if he murdered all the people. “ 5:32 (Here, the Quran equates the taking of even one human life unjustly, with killing all of humanity)

-With regards to forcing others into Islam: “There shall be no compulsion in religion ...” 2:256. “You have your religion and I have mine” 109:6. “Had your Lord willed, all the people on earth would have believed. Do you want to force the people to become believers?” 10:99

Page - 14

www.adesiflava.com

So, war is acknowledged in the Quran, but only under certain situations and circumstances. Saying so, are there any rules to be followed or ‘does everything go’? Surprisingly, there is a fairly long list of the do’s and do not’s in any fight, namely called the Islamic etiquette of war. Never ever kill children, women, the old and infirm, persons living aloof and alone in their houses; Never go near the gardens, never cut trees, never ruin the houses, never destroy the places of worship, never mutilate dead bodies, never ever attack in the dead of night. Feed the prisoners of war well, give them what you eat, treat them with kindness and mercy, do not torture them and encourage them to enter Islam.

burned Muslims alive in Burma... The list goes on and on. Just as Japan does not hold every single American accountable for the crime/terrorist act of the US government, the world should not hold every Muslim accountable for the acts of others claiming to act in the name of Islam.Terror has no identity, race or religion.

After all of this, one can only wonder, what is going on in the world? Who are these people shooting, bombing, threatening and slaying others This article was in the name of conceptualized and edited God? That is by our guest columnist just it- they are Mr. Faiz Qezilbash, who is people. The same based in Hong Kong. kind of people The writer of the article that bombed Ms. Mariam Jomha is LebaneseCanadian, and holds a Masters of Hiroshima and Science degree in microbiology Nagasaki, that from Beirut Arab University. ARVIND KEJRIWAL

TURNS INDIAN POLITICS UPSIDE DOWN WITH A LANDSLIDE VICTORY The story of Aam Aadmi Party and its leader Arvind Kejriwal has made waves around the globe. It has all the elements of a Bollywood blockbuster or a bestselling novel. A “common man” comes out of obscurity to the fore of the nation’s politics and challenges the heavyweights on their home ground. Capturing the country’s imagination he disrupts the status quo and becomes a force to reckon with. In a twist of fate; a series of misfortunate events, some bad decisions, and clever ploy by his opponents lead to his unexpected downfall. He is written off from the fight and even ridiculed. But he doesn’t give up. He takes his time to recover, recuperate

Page - 16

and regain his lost ground. And when he comes back he not only challenges but kills, no – slaughters the proverbial Goliath. Arvind Kejriwal’s victory in 2015 Delhi legislative assembly elections, is much more shocking and praiseworthy than his rise to power one year ago. When he came to power in 2014, he already stood on flimsy ground of outside Congress support. After a media maelstrom caused by an incident related to Somnath Bharti, a minister in Kejriwal’s cabinet, sucked in the entire Aam Aadmi party government, things started going south for AAP. In just 49 days of being in power, Kejriwal

decided to resign and go to the people for complete majority. But this move was seen by many as his desertion of people who had voted for him the election. The “aam aadmi” who had rallied behind Kejriwal during his initial rise became alienated by this move. They had hoped for a strong stable government and when Arvind Kejriwal had taken his oath as a Chief Minister at Ram Lila Maidan in Delhi, everyone thought that the rule of the “aam aadmi” had arrived. But they felt deceived when Kejriwal gave up this power. To add insult to injury, people had begun to visualize a new messiah in Narendra Modi, the

www.adesiflava.com

prime ministerial candidate of the Bhartiya Janata Party. Congress was already weakened by corruption scandals and humiliating defeat in the Delhi state assembly polls of 2014. People felt deceived by AAP. And BJP came in, riding on a white horse with promises of development and a better future. The stories of miraculous development in his home state by Narendra Modi, the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, began circulating among the public. In a hope of stable government and wooed by promises of development, people of India voted in large numbers for the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections of 2014. In the same Lok Sabha elections, Aam Aadmi Party, which had been the talk of the town a few months back, registered a lackluster performance. People wrote obituaries of AAP and Arvind Kejriwal’s political future. Meanwhile Narendra Modi became the man with the Midas touch. After Lok Sabha, he went on to help his party achieve election victory in state polls of three states. Thus when they got into the electoral battle in 2015 Aam Aadmi Party were the underdogs. The Congress was already suffering with a low morale and it seemed like an assured victory for the BJP. The unstoppable and invincible Narendra Modi campaigned hard in Delhi while AAP was embroiled in a slew of

www.adesiflava.com

accusations regarding donations made to the party through its website. Arvind Kejriwal was really facing the Goliath this time, and a stronger one. But the first signs of trouble appeared when the exit polls started predicting a victory for AAP. The BJP leaders were so sure of the victory that they began questioning the veracity of the exit polls. The true shocker came when the results were out. Not only had Arvind Kejriwal won the 2015 Delhi Lok Sabha elections, but he had done it in an unprecedented way. The Aam Aadmi Party had won 67 out of the total 70 seats in the Delhi assembly i.e. the 96% of the seats, leaving only 3 seats for the stunned BJP. This was a record in itself, never before in any state elections had any party achieved such majority. Another blow to BJP was that 45 out of 67 candidates of AAP had won by a difference of more than twenty thousand votes, with 6 candidates winning with a margin over 50,000 votes and one achieving a margin of over 70,000 votes. The verdict was loud and clear – Delhi had rejected BJP and welcomed back Kejriwal with open arms. So what had happened? How did BJP, which seemed to be doing everything right, lose its plot so miserably in Delhi? And how did Kejriwal managed to stage a comeback which baffled the heavyweight opponents and the

political pundits alike? Here are a few facts about ground reality of how Kejriwal managed to turn the tide to his favor while BJP shot itself in the foot. Sincerity and Hard Work: Arvind Kejriwal knew and accepted that he had fallen out of favor with the people and he worked hard to regain the confidence of the people. In a never before gesture by a politician, Kejriwal publicly admitted to his mistake in resigning from office and apologized to the people with folded hands. This projected an image of a humble and down to earth politician who was willing to accept his mistakes and make amends. People wanted to give him one more chance after this show of humility. He also knew that he had much ground to cover and literally burnt midnight oil starting the campaign earlier than others. He made a mark being on the streets, going door to door and meeting people in their homes. Innovative Campaign and Focus on Local Issues: Aam Aadmi Party dedicated itself to winning people’s hearts and knocked on each door. They engaged in innovative methods like flash mobs and street plays which resonated with the common people. Arvind Kejriwal also focused his election campaign on local issues of Delhi like unauthorized

Page - 17

construction, women safety, petty corruption and high costs of electricity and water. This attracted the voters from lower income groups more than the name calling and mud raking of other parties.

and a deserter in public rallies, the voters poured their sympathy for Kejriwal. The people rallied their support behind a person who they thought was one of them taking on a massive political machinery of BJP.

Public Sympathy and unwitting help from BJP: While Arvind Kejriwal reminded people of his 49 day rule when corruption in the city had plummeted, BJP began personal attacks on Kejriwal through insulting him in public speeches and publishing cartoons of him in bad taste. When mammoth leaders like Modi called Kejriwal a Naxalite

Thus through 2015 Delhi elections Arvind Kejriwal has not only changed the face of India’s politics for coming years but taught a tough lesson to those who considered themselves the political spin masters. While people of Delhi now look up to Kejriwal with hope and anticipation to fulfill his election promises, it has created enormous pressure

on BJP government in the center to deliver on their promises lest Arvind Kejriwal deposes from the centre like he wiped them out in Delhi. Parag Tipnis finished his education in journalism in 2004. After that he played a banker, manager and salesman in 3 continents and 19 countries while continuing his love for the written word. He has published a collection of short stories and poems and continues to contribute to a fiction website founded by him – www.talkingsilence.com

fair and the most attended book fair in the world. The fair offers a typical fairground experience with a book flavor with picnickers, singers, -lyricists, and candy floss vendors.

# India has an ice-hockey-team Believe it or not but India does have an ice-hockey-team. Ice hockey is played mostly in places like Shimla, Ladakh and Kashmir in the north of India. The India national ice hockey team has been competing at the international level since 2009 with Head Coach Adam Sherlip behind the bench during the tournament in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Also, India hosted the 2012 tournament at the Doon Ice Rink.

# The longest road networks India has one of the longest road networks in the world. It is said that the road network is so long that it can run around the globe 117 times. This is pretty crazy because India has 4,689,842 kilometers in length while the world’s circumference is only 40,000 kilometers.

#A land of billionaires

India has 65 billionaires and even more number of millionaires. It is something that this nation can pride in but at the same time it is really sad because the poor are still in the same state they were decades back. Out of the 65 billionaires, the 25 richest people’s total wealth when combined equals the total GDP of Ukraine. Ukraine’s total GDP is about $176.2 billion. So, India is a land that is not short of money just lacks uncorrupt officials to drive the country’s economy.

# Highest Number of Suicides

India records one of the highest suicide rates in the world and to make things worse youths commit it more than the aged. According to 2012 reports, India witnessed total suicides of 135,445 and from this number, students rate the highest. India also has the highest farmer suicides due to debt and famine. When you look at suicides, you may think the educated escape this nightmare but according to reports, it is the educated people who succumb to this course more than the illiterate. What are HIV and AIDS? Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) damages the immune system of a person, whose disease-fighting cells (CD4) are progressively destroyed. A HIV disease can be categorized into three stages infection: acute infection, clinical latency, and finally AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). The progression to AIDS is confirmed when the CD4 cell count drops to a critical level and/or the person develops infections or infectionrelated cancers that usually do not manifest in a healthy body.

HIV/AIDS ~ Ethnic minorities in Hong Kong Hong Kong is highly ethnically homogeneous that the ethnic Chinese group makes up 93.6% of the population. Non-Chinese Asian accounts for the largest proportion of the nonChinese ethnic group, making up 5.2% of the whole population. In 2011, the largest NonChinese Asian ethnic group is Indonesian (29.6%), followed by Filipino (29.5%) and Indian (6.3%).1 Despite the small number of ethnic minorities in the population, they make up a considerable proportion of HIV/AIDS reported cases. As in Mar 2013, the cumulative reported number of HIV cases reached 5,922 in which 972 (16.4%) are non-Chinese Asian. Vietnamese, Thai, and Nepalese are the three Asian ethnic minority groups reported to have the highest cumulative number of HIV (19.1%, 14.8%, and 6.1%, respectively).

GLOBE TROTTER

Scintillating Xi’an Experience Xi’an was a name lingering in my mind since 2000 from the time we visited Beijing as it was another capital of Chinese Emperors. The city designed and developed by Ming Dynasty Emperors was still standing head high as a testimony to the ruler’s active comradeship. The fortified city, though changed a lot with modern buildings and modern culture has still some historical elements sticking to it till date.

Page - 28

www.adesiflava.com

When we landed in the airport, the only place in our minds was Terracotta warriors, which was in Lintong, a place two hours from Xi’an city. But as we travelled to our hotel crossing all the high raised modern artifacts and entered the Renmin Square, our interest also focused on visiting the places in the city too. The Ancient City Wall bordering the Renmin Square is quite attractive wall standing briskly on the day and twinkling with light in the night.Three days stay was not at all enough to see all the historical wonders spread all around the city. The Huimin Jie, Muslim street looked wonderful on the Christmas Eve with scores of people walking inch by inch on the road where we can see only the heads and not the road. The food varieties offered there will surely test our taste buds. We cannot stop our tongue from watering. Starting from candies, snacks to the meat varieties, each one was so special and looked attractive to eyes too. The vendors shouting to attract customers, displays and cooking enactments may be seen elsewhere too, but the feel here was quite different. Dimsum varieties and Lamb noodle with pitha bread are the specialties of this place.

scriptures into Chinese earning him the name Tripitaka master. Only such monks were instrumental in spreading Buddhism far and wide in China. The 7-storeyed building in the middle made us wonder. The halls around the Pagoda were all special in their own way. The exquisite Jade hall depicting Buddha’s life, the elegant wooden carved hall depicting the monks lives, the glittering hall dedicated to the Tr i p i t a k a master Xuanzang, Fung Shui based roofs, the age old original scripture written in Pali on display will stay in our memory forever. The park having the four pillars made of rock with inscriptions of names of all the successful candidates in the Imperial exams was testimony to how people give great importance to education from those days. It was told that parents bring their children before their National exams to see this place to encourage their children to work on their preparations to get into the Civil services. We really missed the Asia’s biggest water fountain show as we visited the place in the off-season.

The visit to the Big wild geese Pagoda called Da yan ta was thought first as just another place of visit till we set foot there. The way they introduced the Tripitaka master Xuanzang, we felt elated as we had learnt about the Chinese traveler monk Hsuen Tsang who visited India through Silk Road in age old days who came to learn about Buddhism in our school days. Yes, when we stood there, we felt great to visit the place where such a person has lived and did all his translation work of Buddhist

The travel to Lintong was quite impressive with lots of selling booths of wines, apples and pomegranates. The entrance to the place gave a great feeling as we could see lot of similar shaped scholar trees without any leaves on either side of the road. The walk from the first gate to the pits was giving us the feel of the place situated between the Jade mountain in front and a river far behind. The Pit 1 containing more than 6000 soldiers stunned us.

www.adesiflava.com

The soldiers and generals standing in rows showed how organized people were in those days. The art of pottery should have been at the peak during that time. Around 1000 statues standing there would have been in all the photos of more than seven million tourists w h o visit this place every year.

Page - 29

Pit 2 and Pit 3 having horses, chariots showed us how the excavation work is being done in all these 40 years to find this eighth wonder created by Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China who was also instrumental in creating the other wonder Great Wall of China. Though many people have toiled their lives in this project, the Emperor’s name is still living even after 2200 years. Many would have admired the intricate pottery work done on the statues and their chrome technology that makes these statues live this long. The tiny tiny grooves in the shoes are also created with great care. The distinction between a infantry, cavalry and generals was very clear when we see those statues showcased in that place. It was great to see the 70 years old farmer in person who first identified the statue in that place while trying to dig a well to find water for irrigation. When the government took over this place, a vast span of area have to be taken care to save the treasure.

The Huaqing Spa in Li Shan mountain on the way back to Xi’an city stand testimony to the luxury living of Emperors and his people during the winter. “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” Daoist Cultural arena in Louguan was another memorable place of visit as setting foot on the land where Laozi, the Taoist preacher lived and did his work Tao Te Ching in this area. The entire area is a scenic beauty with mountain landscape as the backdrop and waterfalls here and there. This will surely impress the tourists. The grand setting will make us awestruck. The ride on the ancient wall takes us back to the age old days of Chinese traditions as houses and streets in one particular area is still maintained to depict the old streets and designs. The towers, museum and other displays along the wall

and inside the wall takes us to the time of great emperors of Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui and Tang dynasties. The Drum Tower and Bell Tower inside this city wall brightens the city in the night will well decorated lights all around. It was told that the drums and bells displayed there were used in grand ceremonies in those days. The show in the night surely will take us to those ceremonies. But we missed that too for the same reason again as it was off-season. Wherever we went, we could see KFC, McDonalds, Subway as it has become a great tourist attraction in recent years. Our sumptuous dinner at the Indian restaurant near the Big wild geese pagoda is still in our memories. We heard that there may be less than 50 Indians living in Xi’an. Though we could not watch many shows, still we enjoyed our visit as we had the chance to see the Eighth wonder of the world and the historic city. An article contributed by: Mrs. Chitra Sivakumar

n the 31st of January, Maharashtra Mandal Hong Kong (MMHK) screened its very first Marathi movie, ‘Dr. Prakash Baba Amte – The Real Hero’, directed and produced by Samruddhi Porey. The screening took place at Lux theatre in Hung Hom. It was attended not only by Maharashtrians, but also several non-Maharashtrians and even nonIndians. Representatives from the Indian consulate of Hong Kong and representatives from various Indian organizations in Hong Kong were also present for the screening. This movie encapsulates, life of the prolific social worker and an altruistic doctor, Dr. Prakash Amte and his wife Dr. Mandakini Amte. A film about an incredible couple who dedicated their life for the

Page - 34

healthcare, education and a better lifestyle for the tribals of Hemalkasa. Dr Amte’s humanitarian work is truly inspiring. After watching the movie, one of my Chinese friend said, “It’s incredible to see how someone can selflessly dedicate their lives to the betterment of others”. The movie outlines Dr. Amte’s undying spirit and his display of persistence in the most extreme conditions. Dr. Prakash is not the only one who sacrificed his life to magnanimous services for underprivileged people in the remote area of Maharashtra, Hemalkasa. His father Baba Amte initiated these practices followed by the entire family, and now fourth generation is still committed to social work in various forms. After attaining his degree as a doctor Dr. Prakash devoted his life to provide medical help to the tribal population in Hemalkasa.

Some local and international media students who attended the movie screening.

The event had a display of various books and literary works on Dr. Amte’s life.

www.adesiflava.com

The film shows his journey, in which he was faced with various difficulties in order to create a better living environment for others, particularly in some secluded areas of Maharashtra. His real struggle started after he installed his clinic at Hemalkasa. The tribals seemed to have more faith in superstitious activities, than in worldly and established practices like medicine. There is an aching scene in the film where Dr. Prakash and his wife discovers a religious procedure where the tribals are trying to sacrifice a child in order to cure an old man of his illness. Dr. Amte cannot stand this sight and suggests that the tribals sacrifice him instead. After murmuring several religious phrases in the “maddi” (tribal) language, the tribal priest claims that Dr. Amte will die soon. Dr. Amte and his wife disregard his claims showing their disbelief on debatable entities such as god. Eventually the tribals start to show some belief in Dr. Amte and his abilities, and in one scene we can see the doctor and his companions celebrate the arrival of their first patient. The delight and pleasure that they show proves how keen they are on committing their lives to service. The irony of the situation is that the same tribal priest who once claimed to kill him with mere chants, came begging for the health of his own daughter, to Dr. Amte. The film also shows his love and affection for animals, and how it is difficult for him to cope with the animals’ health due to no veterinary services in the village. When we encounter people with various unpleasant illnesses or diseases we often look away, but Dr. Amte displays humanity at its best, he not only serves destitute patients with the right attitude but goes to

extreme extents to cure them. His humble nature sets an example for unadvertised, pure charity which is uncommon in today’s world. As a media student I would say that the technicalities of the film were not very impressive, however the purpose of the film overpowers everything. Usually movies that outline the lives of such people tend to turn into documentaries and don’t seem to entertain much, however incredible direction by Samruddhi Porey and brilliant performances by Nana Patekar and Sonali Kulkarni, make the movie a pleasant cinematic experience. Maharashtra Mandal Hong Kong (MMHK) raised a staggering 20 thousand HKD (approx. 1.5 Lakh Indian Rupees) for Dr. Amte’s ‘Lokbiradari’ project at Hemalkasa, and continues to look forward to helping other organizations and charities within their reach. I strongly recommend each and every human being to definitely give this movie a watch to discover the pure and genuine shades of humanity. Maharashtra Mandal Hong Kong (MMHK) encourages you to donate to Dr. Amte’s work in whatsoever way possible. For further details you can visit the online sites for Hemalkasa and the projects that are taking place there. An article by: Sanika Kulkarni ICHK I Year 11

Joy of First baby and being first time Mom...

It is magical as your whole life and the world around you change instantly with the birth of first baby.Your center of attraction is just your baby. His first glance makes mother forget all her pains and discomforts she faced during pregnancy and delivery. You feel you are holding the world in your hands when you first time hold your child. Its feels like a surreal dream for first few days. And then the real motherhood starts Page - 40

with those sleepless nights, those piles of unfinished chores, no time for oneself and watching your favorite show quietly becomes a luxury. It is all part and parcel of motherhood, swings of joys, angel like unconditional feelings of love and some bitter moments of stress and restlessness. It is the time when every daughter starts respecting her mother more than ever because she now knows the value of being there every time and care and love of mothers. It is also the time when every couple goes through a crash course of teamwork; it needs quick start right from the time of birth of birth child. Daddy has to do double duty of being father at home and earning bread for family. It is equally difficult and a learning period for fathers as well. Parenthood makes family bonds stronger and deep. We all respect each other’s role more than before and at same time the happiness of being first time parent cannot be described in words.

NUMEROLOGICAL ASTROLOGY FOR 2015 Let us try and decipher how 2015 could fare for people with all Numbers, from 1 to 9.

NUMBER 1:

People born on the 1st, 10th, 19th and 28th in any month are termed as Number 1 people, ruled by the Sun. Leo’s are also ruled by the Sun, though indirectly. In Numerology the # 1 represents the Sun and so is a Fortunate Number, if especially the person it represents is in charge or position of authority. Inactivity is fatal for No 1’s, just like the Sun is uncomfortable behind clouds. The relation between # 1 and 8 {2015} is as harmonious or disharmonious as a ‘fatherson’ relation. Like a generation gap causes friction, # 1’s could face a little strain initially but overall it will be a decent year as the second half can cover up well enough for the first. While your juniors will look upon you for light, avoid altercations with elders. Try taking the second opinion, particularly from elders. A critic always doesn’t mean bad. Try to focus on your goals; despite initial delays, your enthusiasm which when combined with hard work can turn the tide of fortune in your direction. Remember, ‘fortune favors the brave’. Take extra care of your health; avoid thinking negatively as it can have an impact on your mental well-being. Being busy can well be the key. Financially too, the second half looks more promising. Those wanting to invest in land should not wait further.

agony and have an effect on your health. Try to stay unruffled, regular yoga, pranayam or meditation with exercise would be handy, helping you to overcome many tricky situations this year. Remember, when the weather is bad, don’t go out for a drive! Be careful before making a huge investment, both financially and emotionally; do not judge the book by the cover. Instead of looking for motivation from outsiders, try to depend on yourself for most things. Having said that, No 8, Saturn is not a villain; if you labor on your hard work & deeds; chances are you could come up trumps when it is payback time. Those in creative or ‘service’ providing fields could do better.

NUMBER 3:

People born on the 3rd, 12th, 21st and 30th in any month are termed as Number 3 people, ruled by the biggest planet Jupiter, which also influences Pisceans and Sagittarians. 8 {2015} and 3 are accommodating to each other, with Jupiter {Guru} that’s like a teacher while Saturn {Shani} a strict Principal. Both believe in trials & tests so gear up for being tested & examined. Think long-term; avoid short-term speculations. Hard work & patience are the keys if you wish to make headways. old as well as new, and that’s not only because they would bring you solace and support.

NUMBER 4:

People born on the 4th, 13th, 22nd, and 31st in any month are termed as # 4’s, ruled by Uranus. Uranus {4} is linked with the Sun {1} so # 4’s are also indirectly influenced by the magnetic rays of the Sun. 8 {2015} and 4 attract each other strongly which can be extreme too; hence it would be an particularly eventful year with fortunes that could swing either way. So it would be advisable to look before you leap, especially if its something as important as marriage or joining another organization. Your finances may require streamlining & your attention. Avoid procrastinations in this regard at least. There is a strong possibility of problems cropping up in personal relations if you do not think before you speak. Words are like arrows; once said cannot be taken back. On the other hand, if not laid-back in your approach, you could win accolades for your brave performances. Like a salad is incomplete without a proper dressing or sauce, work on your presentation skills as much as on your intentions & ideas. With regards to health, take particular care of the urinary tract and the lower parts of the body {legs}.

NUMBER 5:

People born on the 5h, 14th, 23rd in any month are termed as # 5’s, ruled by Mercury, the fastest. Gemini’s and Virgos are ruled by Mercury too. www.adesiflava.com

As the numbers 5 and 8 share affinity and are friendly to each other, this would be a better year for you, especially in financial matters. Travel is indicated too and those who crave to see far-off lands can realize some of their dreams. However this could also be a stressful year if you let your mind stray or wander; worrying unnecessarily comes naturally to you. It is a well known fact that stress can cause stomach ailments too apart from making you irritable and short-tempered. On the positive side, Mercury blesses with recuperative powers too ensuring that you bounce back from difficult situations that could break other mortals. Nervous disorders can also be awarded with an emerald; and with you learning to focus on one thing at a time, though you would like to take pride in multi-tasking. So try keeping a positive attitude to have a positive year. With you exuding confidence in others, relationships will get healthier too with your optimism.

For students it could be a good year to improve your qualifications and simultaneously raise the bar.

NUMBER 7:

People born on the 7th, 16th and 25th in any month are termed as # 7’s, ruled by Neptune, and such persons are also under the influence of the interchangeable # 2 of Moon. Cancerians too are ruled by 7 {and 2}. The relation between 7 and 8 {2015} is like ‘so close but yet so far’ types. The focus should be on continuity so prod on; the efforts made in 2014 {7} could fructify, helping you buy time. You could also periodically live on past laurels though it would be foolish to thrive or bank on them often. Frequent mood swings could be indicated this year, but that is more so if you are not patient enough.

you to believe in, so eventful can actually depend on your labor and actions. Sweat, strive and strike says Saturn! In most spheres be it physical, mental, financial oremotional, there could be an obvious delay but with an escalation or bonus that would well be justifiable. Investments in land could be something that can give you good returns; but nothing shortterm. Those looking to get hooked {readmarriage} could bite the line. Spiritually too, a rewarding year as you would gain wisdom from the wise and learned. The mantra for the year, if not a New-Year Resolution {that’s more often broken} should be the 3 P’s: practicality, patience & perseverance.

NUMBER 9:

People born on the 9th, 18th and 27th in any month are termed # 9’s, governed by Mars, and Scorpions & 8, Saturn teaches you to build on will- Arians too are Mars ruled. power & determination so always long- cuts would not necessarily mean a waste # 8 {2015} & 9 are not exactly best of of time.
