IS YOUR FACEBOOK A FAKEBOOK?

SOCIAL MEDIA WAS FIRST DESIGNED FOR US TO EXPRESS OURSELVES, BUT INSTEAD WE SEEM TO HAVE LOST OUR TRAITS AND TASTES TO OUR FACEBOOK PROFILES AND PAGES.

n the ongoing era of cyberspace, the prevalence of social media has grown such, that even a hermit is likely to have an active Facebook account. Owning an account today has almost become as common as having a telephone number or a postal address. Some brands use their social media pages to strengthen their social presence, though personal profiles are used for a wider plethora of purposes. While the usefulness is unquestionable, there have been several suspicions raised over the authenticity and integrity maintained on personal pages. Can one’s Facebook profile page ever be a true reflection of its owner’s personality and preferences? Or will a Facebook page soon become labelled as a ‘Fakebook’?

12

COVER STORY

Over the past decade, several social media websites and smartphone apps have allowed people to reach out and connect with others beyond geographical boundaries. Users first took to it to post pictures, circulate information, and share links with selected circles. Xanga, Hi5, MySpace are few of the many also-ran brands, while the sites that are still running are Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and - of course - Facebook.

couples, and even businesses got to personally interact with clients. In fact, the platform was also considered as one of the greatest boon for those averse to socialising; introverts found a new outlet of sharing, and cult members formed their own groups to share their uncommon passions. Mark Zuckerberg’s invention has been such a success, that by April 2017 it accumulated over 1.9 billion global users.

Facebook to escape into the virtual world. To distract themselves from unpleasant experiences, emotions, and thoughts, many of them seek out a new measure, and source, of happiness; so they begin to benchmark the quality and quantity of friends, followers and fans that they have on Facebook, and use that measure as their barometer of personal happiness. Unsurprisingly, as a compensation to fill mental voids, repress stresses, or to mask

From its early days, Facebook was often praised to the skies for being that blessing which helped give cyber communication its color. Even through networks of wires and binary codes, connection alas became more personal; long lost friends have been reunited, pairs of singletons were converted into

This could be explained by the observation that many people – especially teenagers – repeatedly resort to social media in both, times of happiness and sadness. Reportedly, they use Facebook to share, celebrate and treasure memorable moments; but with equal measure though, those low on self-esteem also use

raw emotions, profiles, statuses and communication on social media are becoming increasingly colourful in every way possible.

innovation is encouraged, as users often feel the need to conceptualise posts that they think would intrigue, entertain, or impress others. Their posts usually involve exclusive events, dexterous delicacies, picturesque places, and prolific personalities. While there are inevitable photos of friends and families, they seem to be used more to boast status symbols or success stories;

posts featuring raw emotions and vulnerable thoughts are far and few. They could reveal a lot more about a person’s true trials and triumphs. Although it is equally unhealthy to post dirty laundry online, what is most concerning is the intention and purpose that drives people make their posts, along with the content and regularity of their posts. The hunger for attention and drought of emotional nourishment cannot be ignored.

As a canvas gets more colored though, different shades and shadows start to surface. Statistics further reveal that an average global user has around 340 friends on Facebook. However, social anthropologist Robin Dunbar recognises that a person usually has upto around 150 meaningful relationships overall. So what about the other 190 contacts? How often do we communicate with them? How well do we connect with them? How much do we even ‘know’ them? Are they even ‘friends’? Worryingly, as our social network of friends widens in breath, the communication and connection within tends to lose its depth and becomes shallower. Yet, that doesn’t seem to incline people to use the system any less; reports reveal that over 1.1 million people worldwide log

onto their Facebook at least once a day. Although some may call clinically be recognised as ‘addicted’ to the system, the overwhelming statistics also help to confirm the idea that all living beings have six degrees of separation. Despite trying to dodge stereotypes and generalisations, cynics have been so appalled by the recent trends, that some have even termed Facebook as ‘Fakebook.’ What once started as a transparent platform for individuals to share their personalities and preferences freely, has since become a place where people not only censor their posts to solely show their best selves, but some even strategize their posts to ensure they get optimal ‘likes’ and feedback. The sole silver lining is that creativity and

Being so engrossed in trying to rev up their virtual world, some active users have even shown symptoms of addiction, and mental absence from their reality. Analysts suggest that this could be because there is an increasing reliance on social media to derive, and determine, our identity - and even more worryingly, our self-worth. Increasingly, the sense of comfort that one gets from sharing on virtual reality is getting higher, deeper and more valuable than sharing with any person in real life. Precisely, the extreme judgement - or the fear of it – that a person experiences in their real life is so overwhelming, that a person would rather opt to escape it and seek solace in a virtual reality. They thus lose their sense of presence from reality as the potential of shame can stain a person more so than any form of encouragement, acknowledgement, and appreciation ever can console them.

COVER STORY

Such has been the overuse and reliance on Facebook, that some even lose the capacity to think independently for themselves. In 2016, a video was posted on Facebook where a young girl was shown

trembling at the ledge of a building moments before she jumped to her death. If instead of shooting and sharing the video on Facebook, the witness called the police, perhaps a life could have been saved. In fact, the Federation of Youth Groups has found that an increasing number of university students post suicide-related messages on Facebook. If, instead of posting on Facebook, they speak with a trustworthy relative, friend, Samaritan, or even professional

counsellor, it is likely that more lives can be saved. The proportional correlation between the rise in suicides, and the surge in social media sharing is hard to ignore. But should Facebook be blamed? Perhaps not, as it is hard to blame a platform that has become one of the greatest and richest brands in the world. Now that we have recognized this worrying trend though, it is important to identify the possible remedies to help people live more authentically, both in real life, and virtually. From a Fakebook, Facebook could then perhaps become a virtual book of that reflect real feelings and fun.

IN THE MOOD

Join us as we go through the hits and misses of the Modi government and find out whether India can really be called an independent nation.

The Review Even though a youngster graduates into adulthood at the age of 21, there are other markers that are more reflective of his true independence. His influence on others, moral principles, as well as selfsustenance must be evaluated. Similarly,

to review the independence of India, we have chosen to review the present government by its impact on the common man, security, international policies, and minority and women issues.

IS INDIA INDEPENDENT, OR IS IT IN DEPENDENCE?

WE CELEBRATE INDIA’S INDEPENDENCE EVERY YEAR, BUT WHAT WILL IT TAKE FOR A COUNTRY TO BE SAFE?

A

s we get ready to celebrate India’s Independence Day, it is an apt time to look at the country and consider whether India can really be called a free country. Under

the stewardship of a prime minister of Narendra Modi, the country has taken smooth strides towards success. Nonetheless, the challenges are still there – some of them are apparent while others are still lurking in the shadows.

1. Elevation of Common Man Instead of offering poor and Below Poverty Line (BPL) families monetary support and free food, the Government is providing them with opportunities to gain the skills required for earning a steady income. More importantly, they have also been given support to help manage their funds. The government has gone a mile further by also offering them a cheap pension scheme to live a dignified old age. a. Jan Dhan Scheme: This scheme allows BPL families to open a bank account with zero balance and enjoy other financial benefits like credit card, debit card ATM etc. Good to Know • Average deposit per account (March 2015): Rs.1064 • Average Deposit per Account (as per March 2017): Rs. 2,235

IN THE MOOD

Remarks: The major objective of the scheme was to offer bank support to the poor people. The above figures show that the scheme has not only succeeded in its objectives but has allowed the poor people to effectively manage their funds and start saving for the future. Benefits: • Effective Fund Management and Principal Security • Increased Deposits resulting in enhanced liquidation

• Pradhan Mantri Kausal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) aimed at training poor youth in various skills to enhance their employability • Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vika Yojana (PMKVY) aimed at developing the skills of poor youth for enhancing their employability • The Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) for offering easy loans to aspiring entrepreneurs with limited resources and exposure

• More accurate monitoring of poverty data

2. Security

• Enhanced life quality, literacy rate and elimination of child labour

India has recently started a slow yet steady journey towards redefining its policies. The soft stance of Indian Government had prevented the military to prove their mettle in many cases. Modi Government has now allowed, and even encouraged, the military to play a pro-active role in combating the terrorism coming from within and outside the county.

b. Atal Pension Yojana (APY): This scheme helps poor people build a pension scheme with negligible premium. Half of the premium amount or Rs.1000 per person annually – whichever is lower – will be recognised as the government’s support. Good to know: The total number of population that have enrolled themselves under APY is estimated to be 48.54 lakh, while the reported total pension wealth is R.1756.48 core. Remarks: Not only is the number of beneficiaries encouraging, but the total pension wealth also gives a reason to feel positive. The scheme is especially beneficial for poor people who are generally involved in the jobs that don’t offer any pension. It will promote healthy aging among poor, and also increase their longevity and at the same time reduce their extra medical expenses. Other important ambitious schemes started by Modi Sarkar include • Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) to offer life insurance for poor people

a. Kashmir Issue • From being merely condemning the attacks, the government has now started attacking at the sources. This determined unhesitant approach on Kashmir has already started bearing fruits. • During the 3 years of Modi Government more than 350 militants were neutralized in Jammu and Kashmir. • Organizations nurturing militants are now openly labelled illegal and attract mass arrests and other necessary actions. Recently 5 Islamic State Operatives were arrested along with 90 of their sympasisers. • The surgical strikes across the line of control (LOC) is arguably of of the boldest steps in the recent military history of India. It has also shown the bold determination of Modi Government to weaken the terrorism using core military methods.

17

b. In-House terrorism One of the most pertinent terrorism issues inside the country is Left Wing Extremism (LWE). The expectation is that it may still take some time to repair the comparison of present condition with the condition during past government gives some assurance. • The proportion of extremists who have surrendered has gone up by 100% as compared to 2011. The number of naxal attacks has also reduced by 25%. • Apart from the military endeavours, the government is also proactively engaged in the development of these states to invite investment, reduce unemployment and prevent youth from joining naxalites due to monetary needs or dissatisfaction. Here is the collective infrastructure development in these states:  5412 km of roads  2187 mobile towers with proposed 2882 more towers  752 ATMs  1789 post offices c. Reduced Infiltration The confident stance of Indian army has helped prevent the infiltration from Pakistan, which has gone down considerately by 45% when compared to the same period last year.

3. International Policy The country’s international policy is aimed at fortifying the fundamental rather than aiming at the immediate and limited benefits. The focus is on aligning India with the changing global economical conditions and making India a beneficiary in the global economical prosperity. The authoritative prime minister and single majority party

18

IN THE MOOD

strengthens international relations by infusing confidence in the alleys. India has also started shunning hesitation when it comes to speaking against unfair practices by China. • The recent decision to boycott Belt and Road Forum (BRF) in Beijing is a welcome change to India’s hesitant and tentative approach towards confronting China publicly. • India openly objected to the Civil Procedure Code (CPC) and One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative due to the lack of transparency, exploitative nature and resultant damage to the environment. • In 2011 China ranked 35th when it came to FDI but the rank improved to 28th in 2014 and further enhanced in 2016 to 17th rank. So, economically the relations with China don’t disappoint. a. International relations • The Overseas Friends of India is an ambitious step with an objective to encourage the Indian diaspora to communicate with investors. It is also to help India be perceived as a business-friendly country and promote their recent developments to facilitate investments. • However, the unstable political condition in the US and less-friendly approach of Trump toward different nations along with America First mentality has put a question mark on the future progress of the relations. • India has supported its international relations on the solid foundation of powerful economic imperatives, investment in infrastructure, welcoming policies and a vital role played by India in the treats sponsored by group like ISIS that along with the obvious benefits will also make other nations go farther from Pakistan. • The focused attacks on minorities and increasing attacks on Africans can cost

India some of its major international allies like UAE and more importantly, a number of African nations.

4. Minority Groups This group is time and again targeted by the saffron and other Hindu-oriented groups and the incidents have only increased during the recent times. The youth of minority groups are still facing a soft, unapparent isolation in the job market among local businesses. The attacks on social media and society have made the group fear for their safety in sensitive situations or locations. The incidents of attacks on minorities, lynching and anti-minority rhetoric has caused the minorities to fear for their safety in India. The anti-minority terrorism present in different ways has only weakened the trust of minorities in inclination of India towards making them a respectable part of the society. a. Neighbours first • The India-Nepal relations have shown an improvement under the prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal. The credit goes to the constructive measures taken by Modi Government. • Once keen on developing strategic relations with China, Bangladesh has now largely normalized its relations with India, courtesy Modi. Besides recent developments in free trade agreement, sharing river waters, building a railway line and developing energy have helped build peaceful relations. India will also utilize 4.5 billion USD on LOC projects. • The India is all determined to exclude Pakistan from Saarc that will also allow it to have a smooth relation with its other neighbours. • A new trade pact with Sri Lanka Economic and Technological Cooperation Agreement (ETCA), was

also developed aiming at enhancing bilateral trade between Sri Lanka and 5 major South Indian states (Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana)

5. Women Safety (312) Due to the increasing number of women crimes and lack of security, women are reportedly forced to live a strangled life in the country. When the capital of a country is regarded as unsafe for women, the country cannot be called an “independent country,” at least by the fair gender. The gender based difference has increased during the Modi governments and the same is expressed in the increased number of crimes against women, foeticides and discrimination against the girls. • The gender discrimination is a bitter reality of India that does not seem to show any signs of improvement. The situation is worse for the rural population and women belonging to economically backward classes. However, the latest budget did not offer any special allocation for the women in women oriented industries like diary. • Women workers constitute around 57% of the manpower employed by Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. In spite of this, the budget for the scheme has only increased by 1% to 48,000 crores in 2017-2018. Apart from the dismal budget increase, the irregularities or utter denial of wages decimates the very objective of the schemes. • Likewise the Integrated Child Development Scheme is aimed only at women and also looks after the nutritional requirements of the infants. According to may 2015 data there were 24.58 lakh women employed under the scheme. That might sound positive

IN THE MOOD

but the truth is that these women are not considered to be workers and are offered an honorarium that, in plain language is an unjust meagre amount with irregular disbursements. • Even in Urban areas the working women numbers have decreased to over at a dismal 14%. The country ranks 136th in the gender parity at work n which a total f 145 countries are ranked.

Conclusion Unlike many previous attempts by different politicians, Modi hasn’t only given mangoes to the poor to savour but he has even told them how to plant and nurture their proverbial mango tree. Independence of any nation is identified by the condition of the marginalized sections and poor people. On this front, we can say that India has become a more

19

independent country for poor people. Bolder steps toward security are another factor making India a better place to live. However, for minorities and women, the rise of attacks sponsored or promoted by RSS and similar organizations and step treatment of women in economic schemes have turned their own country into a cage for them.

VINOD KHANNA’S JOURNEY THROUGH OSHO: HOW AN ENTERTAINING HERO TURNED INTO A SPIRITUAL DISCIPLE AND RETURNED

M

any regard Vinod Khanna as a popular Bollywood actor, how many know about his tryst with Rajneesh

Osho?

Vinod Khanna’s life story is full of interesting twists and turns, and beyond Bollywood, his spiritual liaison with Rajneesh Osho was a significant milestone. From his early childhood in Pakistan to chancing upon the junction of films, and landing at the junction of spirituality, Khanna has indeed experienced the best of both realms – spiritual and material. Although his Bollywood celebrity status had a role to play in his popularity, it is his spiritual sojourn with Osho that had the world looking at him with mixed reactions of astonishment and admiration.

At crossroads with Osho Rajneesh Vinod Khanna met Osho Rajneesh when his career was taking off wonderfully in the wake of hits like Qurbani. He was introduced to Osho by Director Vijay Anand. Initially he visited the Pune Ashram every weekend and sometimes even rescheduled his shooting dates to visit the ashram. He was formally initiated in 1975. The glamour of film industry had revoked different reactions in people. Much later, Khanna revealed his reason for joining the Osho community:

"he wanted to know his true identity or inner self." The celebrity status had entangled his mind in a loop; he often felt hyper and angry beyond tolerable limits. In his personal quest for the purpose of his existence, and to seek a pure form of peace, he thus landed at Osho.

Embracing Osho Principles Although many followers revered Acharya Rajneesh Osho for his spiritual guidance, some citizens and authorities frowned upon the philosophies of liberated libido and other amoral associations of the Osho community.

The main reason for Vinod Khanna’s spiritual turn was his attraction to Osho’s principles though, was that it served as an apt antidote to Khanna’s wandering and saturated mind.

After embracing Osho, Khanna started to meditate and realized he can control his thoughts. He learnt that he could focus on productive activities rather than dwell on destruction. He recognized the

need to be free of films for a span. He

courtesy the meditation and spiritual guidance he received under Osho Rajneesh.

Real Roles It is said that Acharya Rajneesh had advised Khanna to pay attention to the relations, roles and responsibilities he had off-screen, in his real life. This meant that he committed himself to each of his real roles and responsibilities wholeheartedly. Unsurprisingly for him, it led to even greater success and happiness in both, his professional and personal life.

Irrevocable changes in lifestyle At a time when his fans were expecting more films from him, Vinod Khanna made the sudden decision to quit films altogether. In 1980, he held a press conference where he declared his intention to reside in Oregon, USA with Osho Rajneesh, and he was away from films till 1985. After selling his favorite Mercedes that he proudly bought, he flew to Oregon, where he took on the role of a gardener at Osho’s ashram.

EDUTAINMENT EDUTAINMENT

From Stardom to Stewardship During his four years’ stay at the Osho ashram, Vinod Khanna devoted himself to doing acts of service. The tasks he was assigned included cleaning toiles, washing dishes and tending to the plants and any other similar work. Meanwhile, his new lifestyle took its toll on his personal life, as not many shared his penchant and passion for his chosen path. His wife and sons faced a lot of anxiety and distress without his presence. Eventually, his first wife Geetanjali divorced him, citing his long periods of absence, as which he did not return to India even for a visit.

Return of the prodigal In 1985, trouble started brewing in the peaceful Osho Ashram in USA. Osho wanted Khanna to return to India and take care of Pune Ashram. However, Vinod Khanna refused citing his inexperience in managing the ashram. This led to a fall out between the guru and his disciple.

Khanna seemed to have had his fill of Osho’s decadence and libido and the sense of abandonment led him to became disenchanted in the same speed as he embraced the Osho principles. Fortunately for him, his return to movies was easy. He married again and this time around he bought a Volkswagen Beetle. He later turned into a devoted husband to his second wife, Kavita, famous politician and devoted sanyasi without feeling the pressure or hassles that come with juggling multiple roles.

The Spirituality Behind his Luxury Reflecting back, Vinod Khanna seemed to have sufficient experience of both worlds; spirituality, and luxury. His journey through Osho gave him a different perspective on existence, which also made him a more calm and likeable personality when he returned. Even in his later years, his lavish lifestyle and preferences was apparent in the way he spent his money for his pleasure and enjoyment; he had

31

always wanted the best in everything from food and apartments to cars. However, he maintained that he had spent his money wisely; his humble experiences at Osho’s ashram had taught him the value of money. Although he believed in living life to its fullest, which involved enjoying the pleasures of wealth, he still had enough self-control to stay cautious and not squander it away needlessly out of his greed of materialistic pursuits. True to this character, he lived a fulfilling life, making a name for himself in films and later in politics, before succumbing to cancer in April, 2017. SPIRITUAL

SPIRITUAL RESPONSE THERAPY SRT presents a personalised modality of releasing blockages and healing your body, mind and soul. Spiritual Response Therapy (SRT) is a healing technique that removes negative energies and help you lead a happier life. SRT works on a soul level to help eliminate physical, mental, emotional and spiritual challenges that could include areas such as: relationships, life purpose, spiritual connectivity, marriage, career, finances, depression, weight loss, addictions, illnesses, anxiety, aches and general wellbeing. It is a great way to help children work through developmental challenges like ADD, anxiety, behavioural issues and lack of concentration. Pets and other animals

can also benefit from SRT clearings and this also allows us to care for them in a more complete manner.

programming. The negative energies are cleared from the subconscious, soul (Akashic) records, which then leads to healing across levels.

What is SRT and How does it work? SRT was developed by Robert E. Detzler, and has been used by thousands of healers since 1988. It is a process that taps into the subconscious mind as well as soul records to release negative energies or limiting thoughts, and replace them with empowering beliefs. SRT provides a powerful, painless and precise way of changing the landscape of our inner and outer lives. This is achieved with the help of higher guidance ('Higher Self'), and involves healing of past life energies, subconscious blocks, and negative soul

How is an SRT session conducted? Initially, the practitioner will consult the client to understand what energies need to be released for that challenge to be removed. Then using the client’s muscle response and intuition, the therapist gauges where problems lie and what questions to ask for a thorough clearing. This also helps in connecting with the client to better understand their situation as well as to provide guidance and counselling to them. During the process, the practitioner uses a pendulum

33

Who can benefit from SRT sessions? SRT is the perfect tool for us to use for anyone at any age, and even animals. What if the SRT Practitioner and the client are in different countries? In SRT, the practitioner connects with clients on a soul level; so time, location and distance are insignificant. Sessions can be conducted in person, over the phone, or even in the client’s absence. With SRT, it is possible to work on clients who are hospitalised or even in an unconscious state (e.g. a coma), as the connection is made at a soul level, so the conscious mind and physical body are bypassed. The effectiveness of a session in person, over the phone or in the absence of the client are all the same. How long does an SRT session last and what is the cost?

or a special set of charts to connect with the client's Higher Self to channel the energies that need to be released. Why do we have these negative energies and Where have they come from? According to SRT, each soul is a part of Source. The purpose of life is to understand the Source where we have come from. This allows Source to grow, which then also allows for each soul to expand their consciousness too. Once you return to Source at death, you calibrate your life experiences. This involves releasing negative experiences and energies, while retaining the positive learning experiences. However, most souls are not able to instantly erase all

negative experiences and energies of their past lives from their subconscious. Why is it so important to clear these negative energies? In addition to negative energies and thoughts fatiguing us, they also get stored in our bodies. We hold energies like guilt, resentment, shame, conflict, hurt, betrayal, lack of self-worth in various parts of our body. These energies show up in our reality because we attract them through our thoughts and energies. Eventually, the negative emotion accumulates to manifest into a physical pain, illness, or disease. SRT can help to break those patterns so you no longer identify yourself with those energies and heal your sicknesses.

A "Full Clearing” session lasts anywhere from 1-2 hours, depending on the energies the client’s soul chooses to release. The duration of further sessions are predetermined to address specific challenges. The cost of a session starts at around HKD 1,000/hr (USD 130/hr), based on the practitioner's qualifications and experience.

SANGEETHA VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT WHEN A MEAT LOVER CHOOSES TO DINE AT A PURE VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT, IT SURELY PRIZES PRAISES TO THE PLACE.

REVIEW REVIEW

S

angeetha Vegetarian Restaurant, nestled in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui, serves South Indian culinary delicacies and delights for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It is a franchised restaurant that started in Chennai over thirty years ago and it since now expanded to have branches across Asia, Europe, USA, and UAE. In its third year in Hong Kong, Sangeetha now offers an impressive and exhaustive array of South Indian food for Indians and foreigners alike. To complement its signature dishes such as vadas, dosas, and idlis, diners can also enjoy the restaurant's plethora of over thirty sauces and chutneys. To trailer the best of the rest, Sangeetha suggests eaters to try its thalis, platters and tiffins. Even after feasting on several scrumptious dishes though, a meal at Sangeetha would be incomplete without

devouring their homemade savouries and filtered coffee. Besides superlative culinary variety and quality, Sangeetha also hosts many events and special promotions. With tall windows overlooking one of the most picturesque and popular harbour views in the world, the restaurant is a prime place for private parties, professional functions, and festival celebrations. While the restaurant can arrange food for take away or delivery through Foodpanda, it is most famous for its feast during the Onam festival. This is one of the rare times when the restaurant arranges a buffet. It often features over 14 authentic dishes from Kerala, such as thieyl (spicy curry) kalan (yoghurt flavoured fritters), thoran (vegetables), parupu payasam (sweet dish), and palada pradhaman (sweet dish). It is surely a treat for the diners who crave authentic South Indian food.

37

Above all,

dining at Sangeetha’s is an enjoyable experience. With efficient, accommodating, and friendly staff, most dishes can be customised according to individual needs and wants. The portions of dishes will not leave anyone hungry, as the food management is top notch. Although the presentation of the food and overall aesthetics could be improved, such blemishes are secondary afore its impressive ambience, service, and dishes.

AUNTY MVP

DEAR AUNTY POONAM Each issue, we invite readers to send us questions under anonymity about on personal dynamics and relations. Here are 3 selected questions from those recently sent to us:

Question 2: Dear Poonam Aunty,

Question 1: Dear Poonam Aunty, My name is Parul and I am 43 years old. My daughter is in her early twenties and is now wanting her own space, to the extent that she won't even tell me what she does or where she goes. While I don't intend to pry, or even over-protect her at this age, I do wish to have - and maintain - a smooth relationship with my child even though she is an adult and doesn't necessarily 'need' me as much. Please help me deal with the empty nest.

Answer 1: Dear Parul, I appreciate your concern, to me that you are a single parent. When your daughter was younger, it must have been easier to establish a clearer authority as she greatly relied on you. Now your daughter is actually a young adult, she is just beginning to find her own place in the world, and as we know, it can be pretty daunting. To maintain a healthy relationship, treat your daughter with respect, set boundaries and show plenty of love and compassion. Since you live under one roof, she must be sensitized to your comfort and acceptance level too. Set clear expectations of her outings and the kind of friends she chooses to mingle with. Express your concern by telling her that it is in her best interest, and for her wellbeing. Include her in your world, so she knows you are building trust, and bonding as friends. Best Wishes.

My name is Rocky and am 22 years old. I fancy my colleague at work. We often chat and have recently started meeting outside the office. Although we are friendly, we are not close, and I haven't expressed my feelings for her. I would like your advice on how to tackle the tricky situation, as I wouldn't want to put our careers at stake, nor become the fodder of office gossip. How do you suggest I handle the situation?

whom I respect dearly, I often struggle to find much common grounds due to the different cultures, ethnicities, religion, traditions, which is sort of making life too complicated for my daughter, as she has had a love marriage, I feel in every step her in laws are always testing her and not accepting very willingly, and being her mom, it is very painful to see her struggles and resulting I have lost interest in myself as I always feel helpless. Please suggest ways to improve family bonding. Thank you.

Answer 3:

Answer 2:

Dear Kavita,

Dear Rocky, In today's times, to have a friendly chat with your colleague is acceptable. Please try to get to know each other a little better before rushing into a relationship. To help you open up to one another emotionally, there must be an atmosphere of trust and faith. When you feel that you are in a comfortable space, you could share your feelings with her. You must also listen to her views attentively. Let your friendship grow steadily, if she too shows an interest in you. In such a situation, you need not worry of others around you. My only suggestion is that as you are still very young, it would be healthy to continue to socialise with other friends too, outside your office. Again, to make any commitment, you must ask yourself if you truly are ready now.

Question 3: Hi Aunty My name is Kavita. My daughter has recently had an interracial marriage. While my son-in-law is a decent man,

I understand how you feel. While I am not entirely sure if it is communication or cultural issue, I would caution you to refrain from interfering perhaps too much in your daughter’s life. You must stay happy while acknowledging that your daughter has married a good man. Discordant relations between two families often runs the risk of leading to great disharmony, and an eventual burnout between the couple. We say that the world has developed so much, but emotional progress still remains a distant light at the end of the tunnel. An attitude of acceptance and open communication are the cornerstones for healthy relationships. Please ask your daughter to share her feelings with her husband. It is the responsibility of her husband to support her by gently explaining to his mother how he feels if his wife is sidelined, and that it is his desire to see his wife be included as an important family member. It is his responsibility and moral obligation to ensure that his wife is happy in her marital life.

All names and details of personal identities have been modified.

Please send your questions on love and relationships to adesiflava@gmail.com with subject line Dear Aunty Poonam.

Additionally, there is depth, intensity, and true bonding in love, and this makes you march to a fine drummer, a song on your lips and gladness in your heart.

Libra:

Sagittarius:

Your human and humane side comes to the fore now. Human – in that you seek people, strive to relate to them, show them you care. Humane, inasmuch as you share the concerns of people the world over, and identify with them. With you, thought is action – in a positive, constructive way. Therefore, charity, time, and financial help will be a priority. Also, your dual roles as both parent and child, employer and employee, or provider and receiver will come to the fore.

Capricorn: New ideas, innovations, creativity, and originality, will be the highlights of this period. With this creativity will also come a linked factor of children, procreation, recreation. For a change, you may be inclined to be more light-hearted, fun loving, and easygoing; you may be vibrating beautifully with the younger generation.

Alongside your career plans, ventures and enterprises, another kind of growth has happened to you in the last period. The plant now blossoms, bearing fruits of spiritual insights, true faith, knowledge and wisdom. The impact of this will be felt most strongly in the personal sphere; expect an abundance of warmth, love and closeness to come to you, and remember you give it back a hundredfold! Ganesha is truly generous to you.

Aquarius:

Scorpio: You again do some serious

to think about your role in life. You seek to live up to your own standards and expectations, both in the family, and in the purview of your work. Even as you define your own role, you also give much leeway to others’ roles in your scheme of things. Tolerance, patience, and kindness come easy to you. You feel that the realisation of your goals is not just possible, it’s a certainty!

thinking. This time around you’re thinking of choices, ramifications and demands, before you reach some rather major decisions. You have the tenacity to stand by your choices and decisions at all times, but you have to choose wisely and consciously. Ganesha is steering you gently but firmly to think about your home, love, and family.

Meetings, conferences, seminars, gettogethers, and celebrations – this month you will relate much better to people and you will even have results to show! Your own thoughts and vision, take a marvelous upswing. You will feel both an easing, and energising effect on your attitude. In this new mood, you will be able to resolve issues and conclude delayed matters.

Pisces: Once again, you have the time

HOROSCOPES BY

BEJAN DARUWALA FOR AUGUST 2017

Aries:

Ganesha says, a larger canvas for you this week. You reach out in every way you can – from meetings and rendezvous to fax, email, and voice-mail. Not just to people, but even places. The environment, eco-concerns, wider issues also keep you busy. A huge level of awareness and commitment will be seen in you. You are the world, now. Not in confrontation but in fine accord.

Taurus:

The growing awareness of last week develops further. After the pleasures and pain of the material plane, your mind is irresistibly drawn to a higher level. You set your sights on a higher and superior consciousness, spirituality, and the cosmic cycle of karma. Also research, higher studies and imbibing knowledge for its own sake could take precedence – as would journeys of the mind and real travels.

Gemini:

A somewhat taxing and certainly demanding week month ahead. A little stress may develop. You could be over-wrought about unfairness in your work and somewhat depleted in health. At the same time, there could be useful discussions, meaningful dialogues with those to whom you can reveal your innermost thoughts. Perhaps a mystery could be revealed. The possibility is there, says Ganesha.

Cancer:

A strengthening of commitment comes now – and it is very much needed, too. Money will be easy, though not wonderful. Nor will your health. More rest is recommended for you as once again, all kinds of pulls could level you feeling as if your batteries are running low and you just can’t cope with all that you are required to do. Your faith will energize you, as will your warm interactions with loved ones. Once again you focus is very definitely on home, family, property, in several ways.

Leo:

This is a time when Ganesha endows you with satisfaction and the belief that you are going the right way to a better life. Harmony and contentment are your goals now. All that the preceding forecast was about is now sought to be put into action, or motion, by you. You get off to a dramatic, stylish start in the work arena. You are redefining your attitudes to home and career, refocusing on fresh goals in terms of advancement.

Virgo:

A truly fine week, again, in which you find satisfaction in all spheres – work, family, love and marriage. You gain in effortless ways both at home and at work. Understanding and rapport with people who are part of your personal “think-tank” lends to an energizing effect on both money matters and affairs of the heart. You work with equal zest and energy as you play.

Libra:

Energy, inspiration, enthusiasm all comes to you in a torrent with this new moon. The operative word here is new – most definitely. It is ideal for creating a new product, or starting a new project, or venture. Creativity manifests itself even in getting a new job or a new addition to the family. It is also a wonderful time for those in the media, publicity, writing, copywriting, the e-world.

Scorpio: As a typical Scorpio with its emphasis on faith, religion, spirituality, you could feel an urge to live less in the material world and more in the spiritual. However, it is material concerns that will force themselves on your attention. Finances, joint-funds, debts and loans will all have to be dealt with or handled in some form or the other. If not your own, they could pertain to the family interactions.

Sagittarius:

Much comes to you now, and in easy, harmonious ways; you will not have to struggle to achieve. Your efforts produce effects far beyond your expectations. Fun and games are embraced joyfully in a spirit of celebration. Do not let go of the clarity of communication and sharing that you have established with those around you – friends as well as workmates. You realize and appreciate the role of good people in your life.

Capricorn: An influx of solid gains

– both, material and spiritual – could make this a period of progress. You tend to ponder on deeper questions, as a deep quest for knowledge leads to wisdom and maturity. Good ideas at work, solid interaction with friends, and family, add to the creation of deeper ties. This period will be about the travel of spirit, and taking your ties to a whole new level.

Aquarius: You are full of

grace in your public position, and you exercise authority with affection and charm. That is probably the least of your gains, as you could expect even greater results at work and at home. You may feel a little more internal, more reflective, more introspective.

Pisces:

Your spiritual and emotional growth has been steady and sustained. It is a much larger canvas that you are painting on, once again leaving your own individual imprint. You function as a part of a group or social organization, see your place in the world order and open up the vitas of your mind. Original studies, research, higher learning, these, hypothesis – even the media, and particularly television – are all part of your sphere.

KIDS

SUMMER SENSATIONS FOR YOUNGSTERS

ADESIFLAVA MAGAZINE SELECTS ITS PICKS TO CONVERT IDLE TIME INTO AN IDEAL TIME FOR KIDS.

S

ummer is a time when many youngsters yearn to stay away from their academics. In fact, some are so tired of following structured programs, that they even detest summer camps and

sports courses, let alone academic catchup programs. This comes much at the chagrin of the busy Hong Kong parents, who are poised with the unique challenge of entertaining their kids throughout the summer. Since there are only so many

times that a person can visit theme parks like Ocean Park and Disneyland, we have scoured the city and created a list of engaging activities and top places for kids.

1. Core Aqua Park in Lake Egret

2

Hong Kong largest inflatable water park floats in one of the most picturesque locales of Hong Kong. A trip to Lake Egret Nature Park could make for the perfect outing for kids and adults alike. Water sport enthusiasts can feast on a 6-meter-long water slide, as well as 43 other inflatable obstacles to dodge around. Skilled swimmers would also be treated to an opportunity to try out wakeboarding, while the rest of the family can enjoy boat peddling, feeding sheep, as well as dining at a top notch restaurant. Most of all, the ambience of the place makes it a perfect getaway destination for the entire family, from tots to aged. Address: Lake Egret Nature Park No. 2 Hung Lam Drive, Tai Po Kau, New Territories, Hong Kong Tel: 26576657 Website: http://www.lakeegret.com

2. MX Club MX Club is a haven for fans of speed and thrills. Upon reaching the club, riders are greeted with an array of bikes to choose from: from pro bike, dirt bike, quad bike, mountain bike, and even e-bike. They can then cruise through the terrains of Yuen Long and enjoy an adventurous adrenalin rush like never before. Rest assured, with all the safety gear provided, youngsters

are well secured from accidents. Despite the high costs, visitors are recommended to book their ride in advance to secure their placement. Address: MX Club, Fam Kam Road, Tong Kung Leung Village, Sheung Shui Tel: 2668 0948 Website: http://www.mxclub.com.hk

3. Ryze If ever there is a fun way to losing weight and fat, as well as improving postures and blood circulation, it is to go to Hong Kong’s first trampoline park, Ryze. Within an indoor space of around 7,000 square feet, it has attractions for children

and adults alike. Some of the activities include dodgeball, basketball, open jump, SlackLine, and Ninja Obstacle Course. Address: 3/F, Kodak House 1, 321 Java Road, Quarry Bay, Hong Kong Tel: 2337 8191 Website: http://www.ryzehongkong.com

4. Freeing Hong Kong With the concept being a huge success across the globe in places like Europe, America, China, India, Japan, and Taiwan, Freeing Hong Kong is the city’s first room escape game. It puts participants in a themed room, with unique challenges and riddles to solve.

5. Bubble Football Bubble Soccer presents a unique way of playing soccer, as each participant

wears a big plastic bubble over their bodies while playing. It is perhaps the only time where people can smash into each other and emerge scot-free and pain-free. More importantly, the game helps players improve their hand, eye, and feet coordination. To top it off, a game of bubble football can often get just as entertaining for the players as for the spectators, who marvel at the sight of their young ones bouncing around and smashing into each other. Don’t be surprised to see their social media filled with interesting captures, captions, and comments on the match.

This BMX bike park is suitable for experts and amateurs alike. As it was the original venue for the BMX event of the East Asian Games 2009, the park is geared with professional facilities, tracks, and courses. The 39,200 square metres BMX Park is the first and only qualified venue for BMX racing in Hong Kong, and it is ideal for cycling enthusiasts to take their hobby to the next level.
