BIG THANKS TO YOU GUYS! Your comments, feedback, views and participation is of utmost importance to us. We appreciate your time taken in writing back to us. Hi Adesiflava, I’m Sheetal from Tai Koo Place. I picked up your magazine from Tung Chung during my visit to a friend’s place in Carribbean Coast. I was not even aware that such a thing like an Indian Magazine exists in Hong Kong. I really liked the cover story and i think next time whenever we meet such a group of Indian men on street, we should immediately notify the police and get them arrested. They are not only spoiling the name of our country but are also cheating their own people along with the several others who are innocent. Please subscribe me for your magazine and send me a copy of every new issue. Sheetal from Tai Koo Place Response: Thank You Sheetal. We will surely register your name and address in our list of subscribers. I agree with your comment on getting the swindlers arrested by the Police. If by any chance you come across this group, feel free to call me and I will also give my statement against them. Thanks, Gaurav. Hi Gaurav, thanks for sending me a copy of your JuneJuly Issue by post. I wanted to share my positive comments on the article ‘Why do Indian women quit their jobs after having kids’. The article is very nicely written by your writer Sumati and I’m sure it must

have taken a lot of efforts in compiling together on the feedbacks and views from so many working moms in HK. Well done, all the best and keep rocking with your Adesiflava, Aamchi Mumbai and not sure what’s going to be your next big thing. Heena from Tsim Sha Tsui. Response: Thanks Heena. Appreciate your positive comments on the article. Sumati will be happy to know about your comments. Aamchi Mumbai, A-Desiflava and next will be Aamchi Mumbai Express...coming soon. Dear Editor & Graphics Designer of Adesiflava. I think you need to really work on the formatting, spacing, font types and usage of consistent typefaces for every article in the magazine. The magazine is very good and the contents are really nice but it needs some serious work on the designing front. Please set a guidelines or style book for your magazine and give it to your designer to follow and do exactly as per the style book. I’m a graphics designer myself and i wish i could design one issue for you in order to help you guys with my concern. Manish from Laguna City Response: Hi Manish, thank you so much for your feedback and suggestion on making the stylebook for our magazine. After receiving your feedback, I’ve already started working on the style book with my graphics designer. You are right; we need to have consistency in our design and layout of the magazine. I will surely keep in touch with you to get some designing tips for our magazine.

As India and Indians across the globe gear up to celebrate 68 years of independence, i want to ask a question to all the Indian expats living in HK. Are we all really independent from the burden of expensive living costs in HK? Education, House Rental, Tiny houses and Private Medication are some of the main factors taking away more than 60% of your monthly income. Plus the language barrier doesn’t let you or your spouse switch over to better jobs easily. Our cover story in this issue highlights about the difficulties we face in Hong Kong in order to save some money for our better future. I wouldn’t say it’s the same scenario for the rich Indian businessmen and high profile corporate job owners who are getting highly paid in Hong Kong. This situation mainly prevails amongst the Lower to Middle Income group families. In HK, the rich guys are filthy rich and the lower income groups are struggling like hell. In-the-mood with our Independence Day celebrations, Sumati (our regular writer) has highlighted on ‘A reflection on India’s journey since Independence’. She speaks about all the fabulous achievements and progress the nation has done in 68 years since Independence. The article got completed before I heard about the news of Sundar Pichai, the designated Indian originated CEO of Google. Wow! This sounds fabulous and makes us feel so proud of this guy. I’m sure one day we’ll see our fellow Indians at the top of every big MNC around the world. It not only makes us feel proud but proves to the world that ‘We Indians are the best breeds of humans on the earth. Another exciting thing I’ve added in this issue is the Hong Kong MTR Map highlighting all the important places and attractions of HK with an Indian tourist perspective. I meet several Indian tourists at our restaurant everyday, who keep asking me about things they should do in HK. Most of them ask about shopping, attractions, night life and important places in HK. To make it easy for me and all those who ask me and my staff, i came up with this idea of an MTR Map of HK highlighting all of this on a double spread sheet. Next time anyone asks me about what to do, where to go and how to go, I’ll just hand-over a copy of my magazine and ask them to open the centre double-spread. This unique MTR map of HK will also be very useful for the new-comers to HK. Globetrotter takes you to Koh Samui in this issue, whereas the Kids section has some English to Hindi (in English) translations for your little ones to learn some Hindi. Next time your kids ask you something in English, please reply back in Hindi and when they say ‘what it means?’ ask them to refer back to Adesiflava’s page 41 & 42. I want to thank all our readers who are reading regularly and sending us their positive and negative feedbacks. It really helps us a lot. Once again, Happy Independence Day and Happy Raksha Bandhan in advance.

HONKEE WOES “Welcome to Hong Kong international airport. The skies are blue and the sun is out, and you are going to be rich and successful. You are going to run a multi-million dollar business, own a massive apartment and drive a fancy car. Your kids will go to the best schools, and you will spend your summers at a different exotic location every year. So basically you’re set for life”.

Cover Story Isn’t that what the public announcement system on the plane sounds like, when you land in Hong Kong for the first time? There is hope and glimmer in your eyes and optimism in your heart. You have traveled thousands of miles and have carried a dream with you. A dream carefully carved from the aims and the aspirations that you have been so tenaciously pursuing for years. I’m no party pooper, but let’s be honest; the truth is far from the above. A couple of years in this city and all you’re really thinking about is paying your rent and budgeting for your children’s education. Sometimes you sit and wonder if this is the same city that you thought would catapult you to affluence and prosperity. Now I know that prosperity is a relative term, and what might be prosperity for some, might not be good enough for others. In a city where materialism is now a way of life and the social yardstick for success is either the size of your apartment or the brand of the automobile that you drive, there is tremendous pressure on a large chunk of individuals to maintain a certain public image and financial status. Let me give you an insight into what some Honkees have to say about Hong Kong’s socio-economic issuesJeet Kotai is a close friend of mine and has been in Hong Kong since 2009. A successful accountancy professional and family man, this is what Jeet has to say – “Overseas relocation is primarily for two reasons, to lead a comfortable life and save money. Hong Kong has not been very kind to me and saving money in this city is next to impossible. Every penny is assigned to an expense, and I couldn’t agree more with a friend who once said to me, that there was no point in breaking your head over trying to save money in Hong Kong. Instead just try and increase your sources of income”. Sandy Gill is what many would call an inspiration for working women. She very successfully spearheads the international operations of a large and reputed courier and logistics group and is also a doting mother. This is Sandy’s take on what she thinks is not right with this city“I have been a honkee for almost two decades now. I love this city and it is now what I call home. However I have seen its social fabric change. People were more receptive and they had more time for you in the past. Everybody seems to be so busy now. Also it is very unfortunate that pretense and display of wealth are very common, and people have turned into money-making machines. This is not the Hong Kong I came to” Communication is another area of concern. For several years the international community in Hong Kong found it extremely difficult to communicate with the locals. This led to misconceptions and locals were accused of racism and discrimination. Although there has been an improvement in this area you still get to hear stories about both nonchinese residents and tourists having difficulties. Education expenses in Hong Kong are giving parents sleepless nights. If your child attends an ESF or International school the fact that you will be paying through your nose is no secret. Local schools don’t come cheap either, and if you have a kid who is at the threshold of starting his or her basic education, you better start saving up folks! This is going to be a long and expensive ride. Lets’ now move to housing and rents. It is known the world over that Hong Kong is one of the most expensive real estate markets, second

Cover Story

probably only to Tokyo. There was a time not long ago, and I mean ten years, when honkees could actually think about buying property. In more recent times purchase of property has become a nightmare, not only because of sky rocketing prices, but also because of government regulations which state that any individual, whether local or foreign will have to pay almost fifty percent down payment. This amounts to a huge sum and has deterred many from investing in real estate. A huge reason behind the artificial rise in prices is the generosity of Mainland buyers who are willing to pay ridiculous amounts of money for a property that catches their fancy. Renting is no better. With almost a thirty to forty percent increase across the board, tiny little apartments are now unaffordable. Moving away from the main city does help a bit, but then transportation expenses go up. It’s a catch 22 and you get hit one way or the other. Is going back to your home country an option? Let’s take India’s example. In spite of India’s rapid economic growth the infrastructure even in bigger cities is not at par with most major international cities. Regular commuting can be a very unpleasant experience and facilities and amenities that one might take for granted say in a city like Hong Kong, are still enjoying luxury status in countries like India and Pakistan. Getting work done in government offices is no less than an uphill Himalayan trek and if you don’t flash the cash even the peons look the other way. So

Page - 10

are you up for all this or would you rather rough it out here? A little something for everyone to think about. They say that no city is perfect. Some are better than others, but at the end of the day every city has its negatives. Hong Kong is no different. It is home to over seven million residents, of which a large percentage is now of foreigners and expatriates. When you have such a mixed bag there will be issues and troubleshooting is imperative. Neither social nor financial issues can be solved easily. Social issues, because Rome wasn’t built in a day, and it takes years to change mindsets and mentalities. Hong Kong has evolved socially, but I think it still has a long way to go. There has to be greater acceptance of international cultures and co-existence should be the order of the day. Also put away your Louis Vuittons and Chanels and call an old friend. At the end of the day it’s the relationships that matter, not your material possessions. Financial issues, because they are determined by a lot of external factors and are not easy to control. We are living in difficult financial times and with the global economy dwindling, Hong Kong too has to bear the brunt. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed and hope that we’re able to sleep well at night without having to worry about paying our bills the next morning. Article written by Faiz Qezilbash

INDIA UNLEASHED

69 years ago, at the stroke of midnight, a nation was born, nascent and unsure, but determined and tenacious. It was borne from the loins of a long freedom struggle against an oppressive foreign rule, drenched in the bloodbath of cruel partition. On August 15, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru addressed a newly-liberated people with possibility and hope- to collectively build an egalitarian and democratic nation. Nehru’s famous words:

Page - 12

“The future beckons to us. Whither do we go and what shall be our endeavor? To bring freedom and opportunity to the common man, to the peasants and workers of India; to fight and end poverty and ignorance and disease; to build up a prosperous, democratic and progressive nation, and to create social, economic and political institutions which will ensure justice and fullness of life to every man and woman.”

IN THE MOOD

HOW CLOSE ARE WE TODAY TO THE DAZZLING DREAM OF 69 YEARS AGO? INDIA’S HESITANT STRUGGLES It has been a tumultuous journey. As India took baby steps towards Nehru’s modern India, we stumbled because of the early chaos of partition, an exhausted resource-bank and the giant task of forming a democratic government in a country with a hugely diverse ethnic and religious people. Just after birth we executed the world’s largest merger and acquisition activity, when 560 small princely states joined (merged) into the Union of India. Not a drop of blood was spilt, nor any bullet fired. We made steady albeit slow progress in fields of agriculture, infrastructure and industry. An agricultural revolution in the 50’s and 60’s changed our ‘importer’ of grains status to ‘exporter’ and made us one of the largest producers of grains, oil and fruits. Land reforms, rapid growth of roadways and railways, dams and power generating capacity contributed to industrial growth. But a ‘socialist’ approach and redundant economic ideals slowly took us to the dead end of a stagnant economy while population exploded manifold. We were stuck with the redundant economic ideal of “license Raj”, while the rest of Asia - Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan and China were overtaking us in ‘Capitalistic’ wagons. The reforms of 1991 finally brought an end to the agony and started the liberalization and privatization era with two decades of the free market economy. India, a huge consumer market, given its ever-growing population, became the playground of international investors, surging our economy forward at breakneck speed. No longer did we depend on khadi & village industries. The inflow of huge FDIs & FIIs

www.adesiflava.com

created heavy duty industries and global industrialists like the Azim Premji and the Birla’s. From 4.5% in the 2013 fiscal year, Our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate jumped up to 6.9% in 2014, making India one of the fastest growing economies of its size in the world, poised to overtake even China, Asia’s largest economy.

INDIA’S ADOLESCENT ACHIEVEMENTS The 70’s and 80’s marked an era of confident scientific leaps. India took on ambitious projects in space. We’ve achieved incredible feats since our first satellite ‘Aryabhatta’ in 1975. Our geo-stationary satellites are providing us invaluable data for weather-phenomena and prediction of impending natural calamities. Probably the biggest achievement of the past year is the success of the country’s Mars Orbiter Mission. ‘Mangalyaan’ entered Mar’s Orbit on September 24, 2014, making India the first Asian country to enter the Mars orbit in its first attempt. India has joined the select club of five countries which have successfully sent a spacecraft to Mars. The 90’s have seen India emerge as an important hub for Information Technology and the world has taken notice. An astonishing growth in the sector of teleservices and outsourcing has led to the generation of thousands of new jobs, giving birth to an affluent and well-informed middle-class. Healthcare and education have thus improved, raising a more dignified standard of living. Since 1947, Life-expectancy has more than doubled, infant-mortality has halved. Literacy has grown from 12% to 74%; unemployment has dropped from 48% at independence to around 19% now, and per capita income has risen.

Page - 13

IN THE MOOD

INDIA SOARING Apart from working on being one of the fastest developing nations of the world, India is aiding several countries in their development too. As an example, India aids 53 Pan African countries in the areas of education & health. It also provides funds to several countries’ five year plans like Nepal etc. From being a support receiver we have now become a support provider for many countries. Our tactful Indian foreign policy can be characterized as ‘relationship on our terms’. The recent successful visit of Chinese President to India and presence of US President as Chief Guest on Republic Day have brought a paradigm shift in India’s ‘Look East’ policy to ‘Act East’ policy. Yes, it’s true that despite this upward momentum, we still have a big percentage of masses living under the poverty line. For every marble shopping mall there is a slum. The gap between India’s poor and India’s well-todo is an abyss. We are still facing issues like Inflation, Income and Wealth inequality, exploitation of weaker sections of society, Crimes against women, corruption and terrorism, but we are no longer bogged down by them. We are waking up, and we are acting. We are actively uniting in demanding transparency and accountability in government, user-friendly fast-track bureaucratic processes, fast and fair judicial system, respect for women, better laws for civil society etc. We are rejecting the ‘dynastic’ rule and choosing better leaders who are making policies towards a better future. While there exists an India that is entrenched in dangerous political corruption, there is also a parallel India, a thinking, acting India that is growing phenomenally, undeterred, united and proud, without distinction of gender, caste or state. The Indian economy is likely to continue to grow at between 7 and 8 per cent for the next couple of

Page - 14

decades. This means that a large majority of Indians will soon emerge from a struggle against want and into an age when they will be at ease. Poverty will not vanish, but the number of poor will come down to a manageable level, and more importantly, the politics of the country will change. As Gursharan Das wrote, “the answer lies with India’s society- with India’s newly awakened middle class. The nation’s center of gravity is shifting and so will its politics.” With a country as large, diverse, communal and imbued in caste and culture as India, we’ve done a fantastic job at national integration, our most scintillating achievement in the post-independence era. The single most important legacy of contemporary India is that it is the largest democracy in the world, and every single adult Indian citizen has a right to vote. Today, as India is celebrating another year of its independence, it stands robust and shining. No longer the land of snake-charmers, elephants and native folk who spoke obscure languages, this multi-cultural country has overcome acute backwardness, a shattered economy and widespread illiteracy, and has taken the attention of the world with its code of Non-violence & peace. Today as we have achieved another milestone by completing 69 years of independence, there’s so much to be proud of. It’s now the time for every Indian to introspect on what is still to be achieved to make India a global power, an economic juggernaut- inexorable, unstoppable and gaining momentum. JAI HIND! A renowned Scientist Dr. Richard Dawkins conducts many experiments to prove that certain beliefs are only superstitions and they actually do not affect the outcome of our life in anyway.

Now Dr. Dawkins decides to play with the pigeon’s mind. He uses a timer which releases grains at random intervals Dr. Dawkins completely dissociates the connection between the lever and the grain.

Dr. Dawkins has met many self proclaimed spiritual healers and falsified their claims of healing abilities and rubbished it with logical scientific explanations.

The Pigeon keeps pressing the lever for a long duration and gets frustrated because his efforts are not leading to desired results But then suddenly a grain pops up and the pigeon is delighted. It thinks “What have I done to deserve this Reward”.

I am only going to talk about one such experiment where he decided to prove the natural phenomenon behind superstitious beliefs. A pigeon was used for his experiment and hence this experiment has been termed as Pigeon Superstition. A Pigeon is locked in a cage with a lever and like all other intelligent species; the pigeon realizes almost immediately that the pressing of the lever with its beak will generate a certain reward for him. As he presses the lever a grain gets delivered to the pigeon and he associates the pressing of the lever with the delivery of the tasty grain. This logic can be applied in basic human life as working hard and achieving desired results in the most logical way.

Page - 16

That is where Superstition surfaces. The Pigeon’s subconscious mind realizes that it was flapping its wings when the grain appeared and hence the Pigeon associates the flapping of its wings with the appearance of the grain. Similarly we humans first get frustrated when our efforts are not leading to desired results but then when random goodies start coming our way we start associating certain things like tying a red handkerchief to bring good luck to other more serious superstitions like fasting for seven Mondays to get a handsome husband.

TOP 5 SUPERSTITIONS THAT STILL EXIST AMONGST INDIANS ALL OVER THE WORLD 5) BRIBING GOD Bribing GOD is as common as taking a bath as both of these things happen almost every day. Bribing God in India is more of a culture than that of a superstition. Not only in Hindu religion, but in other religions also, bribing God is a medium of getting your wishes fulfilled. It can be heard very commonly from the lips of a student praying to God that “Please pass us in the examinations and we will dedicate sweets worth a particular amount to you!” Sometimes fasting for a day or two is also a way of bribing God, and I just don’t understand as to why God will enjoy seeing you starve and reward you for it. Lalbaug Cha Raja in Mumbai employs 50 people every year to count the amount of money and gold offered to the deity on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. . I personally feel that if you are a true devotee of Ganpati Bappa, he will listen to you even if you do not offer him anything but your true devotion.

4) PHOBIA OF CERTAIN DAYS LIKE TUESDAY / THURSDAY The literal meaning of “phobia” is extreme fear of something, and the Indian superstitions have rendered a phobia among people regarding a few days of the week. Right since childhood we are told that if we do not follow the phobia associated with these days something bad will happen to us. There are other fears linked to certain specific days like solar eclipse and lunar eclipse which cannot be proven scientifically Imagine someone has a Million Dollar deal to crack with a potential customer on a Thursday but he cannot shave, cut his nails or his overgrown hair.

3) BAD OMEN OR “PANVATI” If you are going out and someone sneezes in front of you, that is said to be a bad omen, and the work you are going to perform won’t just happen. Similarly when you are going somewhere and someone else calls you from behind your back. That person has to be blamed for causing the bad omen, if things do not work out well. But logically, speaking, how could anyone calling from behind or just sneezing in front of us will prevent us from completing the job we are assigned to perform? The black cat crossing your path is in the same league. I have personally seen people change their path completely and even take longer route to reach their destination. www.adesiflava.com

2) PROTECTION FROM EVIL EYE AS IN BURI NAZAR If you are praising the looks of a newly born child, you would notice his/her mother, taking a little eye liner out of their eye and putting it up on the neck or at the back of ear of that kid. This is called Nazar Utaarna, which is usually done to prevent anyone from putting a negative vibe over the small kid. The process is simple, which is done by putting a black colored dot (bindi) on the kid or by tying a black colored thread on the kid’s hand or leg. Another process of preventing people from putting a negative vibe from the house or a vehicle is by tying a combination of chili and lemon into a thread and hanging it in front of that house or vehicle. There can never be a logical or scientific explanation to the above as logically speaking chilies are nothing but spices and lemons help to have the tangy flavor in food. I have been rebellious ever since I understood that all the superstitions were fictitious. The shock value of knowing about new superstitious beliefs had declined in me. I was not amazed when a certain deity started drinking milk. I was not amazed when a certain statue started crying tears of blood or moved its position. But, when I read about the below superstition being followed, It really sent shock waves down my spine. I felt that even gamblers play a safer bet.

1) ROLL OF DICE, FATE OF FOETUS Female Foeticide is a grave concern. Although it was banned and we all cried in that episode of Satyameva Jayate where Aamir and his team showed how cruel we have become towards our daughters. “O ri chiraiya, Nanhi si chidiya , Angna mein phir aaja re” was a very touchy song in that episode . But what still happens in certain parts of india is shocking. Sex determination is a crime but gambling isn’t? Hence some prospective parents decide the fate of the child’s life based on this roll of dice. At a temple in Vattakaadu village, for instance, they practice something locally called Palli Vaakku-”They wait for the temple lizard to make sounds-sometimes for a day or two-to know the gender of an unborn child. Expecting women also visit Amaravathi Amman temple near Omalur to witness this ‘magic’. The priest there, we were told, employs kaluruti, a form of astrology using Page - 17

Fe ature sacred stones, to make predictions. Clad in a red dhoti, the bare-chested priest sits outside the temple and throws some stones in front of the curious woman. He then looks at her intently before starting off on his “Predictions”.Then he usually pauses and asks what she wants. The priest then looks at the stones again and announces his ‘forecast’: Well it may make you laugh that some people believe in such stuff. I have no problems with people’s belief. I would not want to thrust my logic into any persons hope. Sometimes a superstition can be their last positive hope. Magical things happen only when you believe in them. However what concerns me is in our stern and rigid ways to keep age old superstitions alive we are causing harm to others and in our fanaticism causing serious fatal issues and even death It is believed that snakes can drink milk. During the festival of Nag Panchami, snakes are captured and force-fed milk. As a result, several thousand snakes die annually Godmen and faith healers have been fooling people to perform the most horrendous rituals to get their desired wishes. People have lost their hard earned money and become insane in trying to learn tantric vidya or black magic

We have to bring some logic into our beliefs and associate things with certain practical scientific explanations. We are a land of progressed individuals who are exceedingly intelligent. I hope and wish through this article that I can spread logic and reasoning and discourage people from superstition. I welcome you to give me feedback and if you have any logical explanations for the superstitions I mentioned I would be happy to hear from you and enhance my knowledge. When these superstitions were initiated by our ancestors in the early days there definitely may have been a logical reason to them but they are not relevant to today’s times. The Sooner we stop following illogical superstitions the faster we will grow in life. DMIT

DERMATOGLYPHICS

MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCE TEST

GIVE YOUR CHILD THE BIGGEST GIFT OF LIFETIME. RIGHT MOVE AT RIGHT TIME CAN DECIDE THE RIGHT PATH FOR YOUR CHILD. Is your Child’s age between 3 years to 21 years? Are you aware of the hidden talents of your child? Every child has 8 inborn intelligences. These intelligences determine the BEHAVIOUR & PERONALITY of every child. It is very difficult to identify these intelligences in our normal routine life. Out of these intelligences, few will be HIGHLY DEVELOPED naturally. Therefore, if the highly developed intelligence of your child gets the right EXPOSURE right from the childhood, then your child has the highest chances to excel in life towards a career or life based on the most developed intelligence. How do we come to know which Intelligences of our child are developing naturally? A normal child is born with a fully developed brain. How the brain matures further depends on “The Environment” around him. DMIT is the latest scientifically proven technology through which we can identify the inborn potential of the child at a very young age. Today, many parents are taking the advantage of this latest technology for their children by knowing their LEARNING PATTERN + LEARNING SENSITIVITY and are giving them a GIFT OF LIFETIME. D M I T : Dermatoglyphics Multiple Intelligence Test. What is Dermatoglyphics ? Dermatoglyphics is the study of the pattern of skin’s (Dermal) ridges on fingers and hands. These patterns

Page - 24

are distinctive and are related to one’s genetic formation and are closely linked to our nervous system. As per the latest research, fingerprints are external display of Brain structure – mirror images of multiple intelligences of a person. From the anatomical point of view, the human hands dominate all other organs in terms of relative importance. This is why the brain dedicates the majority of approximately two hundred million nerve endings to the hands. Finger prints are genetic, we can identify the personality and potential of a person based on his/her ten finger prints. Finger prints are usually formed at the 13th to 19th week of an embryo, at the same time the brain starts developing hence the co relation. Dermatoglyphics is complex. Each finger represents different abilities, each print has different interpretations. One’s potential can be generally identified based on the shape of finger prints. For more accurate results, the number of stripes and ATD angle - the angle between the a-triradius (under the index finger), the axial triradius (near the wrist), and the d-triradius (under the pinky finger) needs to be measured. The more number of stripes a person has, usually has a higher ability. The smaller the ATD angle, the higher is the sensitivity for learning. What is Multiple Intelligence theory? The concept of “Multiple Intelligences” was introduced in 1983 by developmental psychologist professor Howard Gardner in his Book “Frames of Mind: The theory of Multiple Intelligences”. As per the theory, every human has minimum 8 kinds of intelligences. The proportion in which it is available in a person differs in every individual.

www.adesiflava.com

Must Read 8 Multiple Intelligences are: 1.

Intrapersonal – It has to do with introspective and self-reflective capacities. People who are strongest in this intelligence are typically introverts and prefer to work alone. They are usually highly self-aware and capable of understanding their own emotions, goal and motivations. They learn best when allowed to concentrate on the subject themselves. There is often a high level of perfectionism associated with this intelligence.

2. Logical/Mathematical – People with this intelligence naturally excel in maths, chess, computer programming and other logical or numerical activities. They have more reasoning capabilities, abstract pattern recognition, scientific thinking and ability to perform complex calculations. 3. Linguistic – Verbal – People with this intelligence display a facility with words and languages. They are typically good at reading, writing, telling stories and memorizing words and dates. They tend to learn best by reading, taking notes and listening. They are skilled at explaining, teaching and persuasive speaking, can learn foreign languages very easily. 4. Naturalistic – Involves understanding the natural world of plants and animals. It generally involves keen observation of environment. They like exploring nature, making collection of objects and studying them. They have keen sensory skill of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. 5. Interpersonal – It has to do with interaction with others. People with this intelligence are usually extroverts and characterized by their sensitivity to others moods, feelings, temperaments and motivations. They communicate effectively and empathize easily with others. 6. Bodily Kinesthetic – People with this intelligence are more inclined towards physical activities such as sports or dance. They may enjoy acting or performing and they often learn best by physically doing something rather than reading or hearing. They like to use what might be termed as muscle memory. 7.

Visual-Spatial – People with strong visual-spatial intelligence are typically very good at visualizing and mentally manipulating objects. They have a strong visual memory and are often artistically inclined. They have the ability to use mind maps.

8. Musical-Rhythmic – Those who have high level of this intelligence, display greater sensitivity to sounds, rhythms, tones and music. They normally have good pitch and are able to sing, play musical instruments and compose music. They will often use songs or rhythms to learn and memorize information and may work best when the music is playing.

www.adesiflava.com

DMIT will reveal following information about your child : • Intrinsic potential. • Multiple intelligence distribution. • Dominant and preferred learning style. • Learning communication character. • Allocation of various abilities. • Psychological and planning capability. • Learning sensitivity. • Innate work-management style. • IQ, EQ, CQ & AQ levels. With this test, one can know if the person has Left Brain or Right Brain dominance. Each side of the brain controls different types of thinking. People are said to prefer one type of thinking over the other. For example, a person who is “Left Brained” is often said to be more logical, analytical and objective. Whereas a person who is “Right Brained” is said to be more intuitive, thoughtful and subjective. Left Brain Characteristics Right Brain Characteristics Objective Subjective Open with Feelings Reserved with Feelings Safe and Cautious Adventurous Practical / Planned Impetuous / Spontaneous Fantasy based Reality based Rational Emotional Looks at parts Looks at whole Strategic Creative Holistic Lineal Science & Math’s Arts & Music Learning Styles: Visual, Auditory & Kinesthetic. Most people possess a dominant or preferred learning style which can be determined with DMIT. Visual learners tend to learn through seeing. They think in pictures and need to create mental images to retain information. They enjoy looking at maps, charts, pictures, videos and movies. Auditory learners learn through listening. They have highly developed auditory skills and are generally good at speaking and presenting. They like to think in words rather than pictures and learn best through verbal lectures, discussions, talking through and listening to what others have to say. Kinesthetic learners tend to learn through moving, doing and touching. They express themselves through movement and have a good sense of balance and eye hand co-ordination. DO “DMIT” of your child once & provide them a right & successful path throughout their life. Meet Hong Kong’s DMIT Specialist Dr.Urvi Furia and discuss about getting a DMIT done for your child. Bauhinia’s View

DIFFERENT PLATFORMS,

SAME ESSENCE The changes and unchanged in the social media age; a perspective from intimate, societal and public spheres of communication circles

The advent and proliferation of social media and its convenient carriage, smart phone, have quietly, often unnoticed, but profoundly changed our way of thinking and relating to each other, based on an unchanged essence of normality under certain contexts. Not a day has gone by nowadays in a metropolitan like Hong Kong where broadband and Wi-Fi internet access are readily available do people not to check and post feeds on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms that are both free to use and instant in spreading and receiving information. Social Media is taking the place of traditional or even early information age channels as a new media of human interaction. Not intended to be

Page - 26

a generalisation, this article seeks to analyse what has changed and what has not and will not change when this new media becomes readily available. First let’s look at what happens within the intimate sphere of people’s social circle. This is the immediate contacts beyond one’s self on a day-to-day basis, usually characterised by informal interaction and personal feelings exchange at home or home-like environments. Contacts at this sphere are often one’s lovers, spouses, parents, children, siblings, close confidantes, etc. Communication within this circle takes quite some time to adopt social media and even a much longer time to be mainly depended on it.

www.adesiflava.com

Bauhinia’s View Social media, once penetrated into the intimate sphere, usually takes little formality but is more contentfocused. Hardly does anyone has a Facebook fan page or regular Twitter posting to family members, nor do we type for a particular public appeal within this confine. Instead, it is chats and video calls that are mostly exchanged, which by and large serve as a technological supplement to or replacement on traditional telephone calls and text messages. Facebook and Twitteralike, thanks for its instant and convenient features in the internet age, take the shape of an advanced tool for our basic needs of love, understanding, and intimacy. This is not so much what social media plays in our societal sphere, communications with co-workers, colleagues, work partners, teachers, and many others that we interact with for the purpose of social needs - job, study, party, etc. In this sphere, social media is reshuffling the timing, frequency, formality, and priority of such interactions. When these interactions adopt social media channels, newly, unwritten, but widely understood rules and norms of acknowledging social media feeds are gradually formed. When and by which particular Facebook or Twitter function to send, announce, release, or spread information can indicate different meanings, different urgency, and different attitude which were traditionally initiated and accepted through posts, faxes, and emails. It is not necessarily that in this societal sphere social media will replace the communication formalities people have been used to in schools, offices, and workplaces but the more people utilise social media for such purpose the more social media-equivalent norms will be generally developed and understood by those who do depend on social media when interacting in this circle. Finally, it’s about news. This is perhaps the very reason today’s renowned social media providers had in mind when first invented

www.adesiflava.com

this sort of new media-to make the news, in a multimedia way of combining written report and video clips, readily available and swiftly enough to anyone that had little access to traditional mass media. And by and large, it did. In this public sphere most are receivers who require such constant flow of information for making informed life, job, and business decisions. Also, citizens’ unhindered access to such information is essential for a functional government and society to work. Facebook and Twitter, representing most social media providers, did impact greatly on our news reading and sharing habit to a point that some papers are starting to reduce print volumes. This public sphere is also where institutions, governments, businesses, universitiesalike make press releases to their social media followers, whose number are increasing and will soon be large enough to represent the whole public concerns related matters. Whether such social media posting can be as legally-binding as traditional press releases remains to be seen but the public sphere is where news coverage is becoming more accessible than ever before. On and on social media companies will upgrade techniques in response to the changing user habits, and user experience will surly evolve into something that might be somewhat different from our vintage point today. Nevertheless, the essence and norms of interacting with contacts in a certain sphere as human beings have developed and confined themselves into over thousands of years will remain intact, only to take a different platform on what we all call social media. Living in Hong Kong, exploring Asia is as easy as stepping out of your front door. With so many different destinations, it can be hard to choose where to go; India for culture, Japan for forward thinking, Indonesia for exoticness….but what it ultimately boils down to is the kind of trip you want to go on. Having recently finished school, graduates were teeming with excitement – myself included – to escape to a land of ultimate freedom: gorgeous beaches, delicious food, and a raging party scene. With these desires in mind, all signs pointed towards Koh Samui,Thailand where the 10-day getaway would turn into the highlight of our teenage years. The weeks leading up to the trip were electrified with excitement for what was to come. But little did we know that any and every expectation we had would be blown out of the water the minute we landed. We stepped off the plane with an immediate kiss fromThai sunshine and were warmly welcomed in to the tiny but resort-like airport before making our way to Chaweng Beach. It was then that we fully realized our holiday in paradise had begun. I had never been to a beach city in Thailand before so every experience I encountered was a new one.The main beach, Chaweng, was alive with tourists from different corners of the world, filled with street vendors selling you a range ofThai delicacies, and dotted with beachfront clubs selling you refreshing drinks to help you soak up all the sun, sea, and serenity that Koh Samui has to offer.

Globetroter

There is no shortage of goodies you can bring home and most definitely no shortage of amazing places to eat. Ark Bar, one of the beachfront resorts, served amazing Western food if you were craving a bit of home.

The Islander, a sports bar across the road, allows you to indulge your stomach in their $30 HKD pad thai set meal and your heart in the rugby game along side old and new friends. But if you are looking for an authentic Thai meal, a look around the corner will be all you will need! 40 baht pad thai, sweet and sour pork, and fried pineapple rice dishes await for you to savor.

Once your daily adventures have been completed, the sunset takes away the calmness of the town by day and injects it with the intoxicating party scene of the night. DJ booths along the beachfront can be heard around town and the partygoers come out to play. However, the party doesn’t stop at the water’s edge… a side street off the main road is where clubs and bars squat next to one another where there are tubs of alcohol, neon face paints and laughing gas balloons galore. People shimmy their way from club to club for there is no shortage of them! Most popularly would be The Green Mango and Sound Club, but there’s nothing more exciting than exploring a new area with friends in which you find a quirky little place that becomes your ‘spot’. There are clubs blaring mainstream music, clubs booming with underground rap, and clubs pounding out music from around the globe. But if you fancy a more toned down night, there are bars also dotted along this party strip where you can kick back, relax with a Chang beer, and shoot some pool. Come morning when hangovers are expected, taking some time for TLC can be just what the doctor ordered. Street vendors selling locally grown fresh fruit can help banish your dehydration and others selling sweet street pancakes will get you back on your feet in no time. Once your feet, stomach, and wallet started to ache, a whole new number of possibilities to relax became available. Traditional Thai massages for the equivalent of $60 HKD along the beach were a favorite way for us to take it easy after a good shopping trip and meal. Nothing says total serenity quite like getting a traditional Thai massage in Thailand while concurrently sipping mojitos, watching people go by and light blue waves crash gently onto the white sandy shores. Total relaxation.

But for some, taking time off and living in your own little beach world can feel a bit like “Castaway”. But in Kohsa, this rut is very easy to get out of. Not a day would go by that we didn’t meet a new group of people.

APP Simply sitting down for a drink at Sober Bar would have you surrounded by fellow tourists let alone when going out to The Green Mango Club come nighttime where clinking glasses with them was always guaranteed. Getting to know all these people from far off locations like Italy or from nearby places like Bangkok always kept the trip interesting and exciting. Talking with these new friends about their trip made me realize that we all came to the island in the same boat - we were there to forget about our worries and simply live a bohemian life based on hourly desires. This carefree aura seeped into each one of us and put us into a complete trance. It was one of the most (positively) mind numbing experiences I’ve ever had. Koh Samui offers itself up for you to completely indulge in whatever you want to do. Have it be island hopping, hang gliding or banana boating, all can be done on the island. Whatever kind of relaxation you’re looking for: all day drinking, tanning beachside, or exploring the tropical regions in search of culture, Thailand is for you. Koh Samui is the ultimate beach getaway that’s right around the corner and never gets old. Article by: Samantha Sugarman

Love & Relationship

M A R R I A G E S A R E M A D E I N H E AV E N P L E A S E D O N ’ T M A K E T H E M H E L L O N E A R T H . Hey, guys..... Hong Kong is a beautiful place, luxury, freedom, pompous, show buzz, page 3 gossips, hot stuff, coolness, fun, enjoyment.... you name it, and Hong Kong has it...! In other words Hong Kong is a place to be... Work hard, party hard and get the fullest rewards of your achievements but beyond or behind or backside of this goes on another, fun and an element of enjoyment for Men in general. All, many or most of them enjoy a life after life.... meaning are involved or enjoy these yummy dummy extra marital affairs.... As all of us are aware of! It is seen mostly, seen more for Hong Kong men or men in general, than the ladies who engage in this fun filled activity! My question is that why do men do this, why? , When they marry, they marry to the lady they have abided for, rightly chosen by them on their will and wish after tying a knot with one lady with whom they have promised to live and die, be with them in hell and happiness and through thick and then.... then... what happens to them after a few years of marriage? Why does the charm of the relationship go away? Why couples are bored with each other’s company or in general bored with their marriage to be more specific! It’s high time, Men and women who have married to each other should start being more aware and alert of what are the side effects that can take place, if you guys don’t wake up! Enjoy with your soul mate, make special moments for each other, respect, love, compromise and be there Page - 32

for each other through all the tough times. But after a few years couples take each other for granted, and as you know men are men... It’s in the women and it’s in their nature to mould through and mould onto to suit a man’s nature and behave and act in a way preferred by their men. If by doing a soft compromise, their men are happy and satisfied, then I think the women should be smart enough to change a little bit for the betterment and tenacity of their relationship and as you all know a happy man, makes a woman happy and a happy woman in return means a happy family, men I can proudly say that’s the beauty of an Indian Lady. However modern we are either we are from India or abroad, we have the power to make a happy family, and a happy living! If both parties will be strong and stubborn and give their views more importance and they don’t listen to each other or don’t respect each other’s words and decision, if both struggle to strength their own ego, then two things happen, either a Divorce (Separation) or a weak marriage meaning, couples are there together as a happy married couple in just in front of the world. They are staying with each just for the sake of it, for family pressures or they are there... But don’t have any feelings or emotions. These are the two ways of marriage breakups or having a Name -Sake married life! There can be another highly not recommended side Effect.... It’s the freedom and the easiness... Where www.adesiflava.com

Love & Relationship

in a lady or a man can choose to have an Extra Marital Affair.... I just want to ask why.... A person who is married a man or a woman... Wants or is forced to do that because he or she is not getting what he wants in a relationship.... and why that’s us so... It’s because of either too busy schedules, lack of time, lack of understanding or lack of love! So guys why don’t couples try and make each other happy and enjoy special moments together rather than involving in these love affairs.... If all people as a couple... Try to understand their partner, make sure to spend quality time with their spouse... Like at least a good one hour everyday if not more, love each other, sacrifice for each other, the number of extra marital affairs can come down, why can’t we be happy and cherish what we have rather than seeking happiness and pleasure outside. Rather than that we can engage in creative activities and focus on uplifting our own families through different ways, focusing on family life, on kids, house and if still we feel bored or unsatisfied and still feel something is missing., then we can engage in social services, creating family clubs, laughter clubs, get-togethers etc, but why do people choose to ditch their married partners and enjoy with another person for momentary pleasure and fun! Is this called Indian ethics and values....? Why can’t we try and love and respect the lady at home, rather than seeking enjoyment with a lady outside home, who seems prettier... Huh (If also she is prettier) she will not come and look after your kids and family... She only will satisfy your needs... But your wife is your pillar of support.... A lady to look for and who will always be there at the time of your victory as well as failure.... at your side... When u are at the most difficult stage of your life, but still..... Some people in Hong Kong... Forget their moralities... And think about those outside ladies to be much better than their married life partners..... That’s the tragedy of today’s modern world!! Shhhhhh!! Moreover in Hong Kong it’s kind of easy... As we have a lots of freedom and choices to choose from. We have this whole group of ladies.... who are there to give you want you want... but at the end of the day... Still people are not satisfied.... Because in the deepest corners of their hearts they know, they have cheated on someone... They feel guilty but.... Inspire of that don’t change!

www.adesiflava.com

It’s high time that we should all start focusing at what we have and try to improve and better the relationships, rather than.... Look for spicy flavors outside! Hope this Article could create this Awareness... And also if a few people can try and change things and make improvements to enhance and beautify their relationship or their lifeless married life...and bring in some life and Color in their married life’s and be there and love and respect their partners and revive their beautiful memories of their honeymoon days, of their days when they were madly and deeply in love with their partners...then... things will start getting better!

MRS. POONAM MEHTA Aunty Poonam Mehta,

HK’s well-known Counsellor & our Columnist for Love & Relationships section. — M. Ed. Guidance & Counseling, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne U K and Early Years Registered Educator in Hong Kong

Question 1:

Response:

Hello Aunty, I have been reading your column very regularly and I like the way you answer these most difficult and complicated problems faced by people. Sometimes I wonder how come these people have the guts of sharing their issues with a local Hong Kong publication?? Never mind, mine is a simple one. I have recently moved from India with my parents due to my father’s job in HK. I’ve finished my graduation in Delhi and I am now looking to get admission with a decent university in Hong Kong for my further education. I’ve almost wasted one whole year but still I am struggling to find a place. I have tried every possible way to get my admission and even my father has been meeting several people who have contacts with the universities or are either in the teaching faculty of the universities. However, none of our attempts have worked so far and now I am working part time in subway and still looking for my further education path in HK. I wanted to ask you if there is any community centre for Indians in HK which can help me with my problem or can help me route through the right channel with getting my admission done. I can’t live alone in India without my parents and at the same time my education is going on a toss. Please help. Sushma from Tsim Sha Tsui.

Thank you for taking interest in Adesiflava magazine, I am pleased to know you appreciate my column. As a counselor I do my best.

In Hong Kong there aren’t any community centers to process your application or help you. Institutions in Hong Kong enjoy a high degree of autonomy in admission of students; requirements for student admission may vary from institution to institution, and from programme to programme. Institutions will make admission decisions primarily based on the merits (e.g. academic and other non-academic achievements) of individual applications. Some institutions will invite applicants to attend interviews, whose performance at the interviews will also be taken into consideration. In general you need to have completed secondary school, have earned satisfactory results in your country’s Leaving or Aptitude exams, if offered (for example, A Levels, International Baccalaureate, SATs, etc.). If English is not your mother tongue, you will need to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System), or equivalent exams.

As an educationist I can guide you but you have to be very specific of what you wish to pursue. You have mentioned that you are a graduate, it is not clear to me in what field are you seeking admission. In Hong Kong grades (merits and honors) are very important and everything goes by the rule you cannot pull strings to get into any university. However, please contact at 92356628 in order for me to guide you. Best wishes Question 2:

It may be hard for your parents to change their mindset. They are conditioned to society’s norms, their own beliefs and fears. In addition, no matter how open-minded the society is today: Hindu and Muslim marriages may not be well accepted to both parents concerned. Ponder over above points and share with your friend. As for getting Indian Visa please contact Indian Embassy in Hong Kong for right information. Best wishes.

H Hello Aunty I am Sajida a 19 year old girl from Sha Tin. I have purposely changed my name while sending you this question as I don’t want to get into any trouble with my family. I am in love with an Indian Punjabi Guy and I am a Pakistani. We both studied in the same school and even our families know each other. We both have been dating each other from the past 3 years now and we want to get married. I am worried if our families will accept this marriage and also I am worried will I ever get an Indian visa to visit my boyfriends/ husband’s family in India. Please can you give some advice on how we both should tackle this issue?

Question 3:

Response:

Response:

Dear Salida

Dear Jagjit,

Thank you Salida for asking before taking any drastic step. It appears you both are very young? Can you both support each other financially? Yes, I am with you when you are in love you don’t see beyond and the reality of life. Inter- religious marriages are often crippled with unique challenges, which couples don’t foresee.

It appears you are not sure if she has similar feelings for you and would agree to marry you. Have you shared your interest in her? Have you discussed with your parents? Are you a vegetarian?

You may have to face big hurdles in the light of your decision to defy all and maybe the basic norms of society too. • • • •

Problems in adapting to a new environment, culture and rituals. Inability to convince parents and in laws. In many societies inter religious marriages are considered a religious offence where couples suffer threats from their own family members. The ongoing friction between the families can lead to a mutual disharmony and misunderstanding between couples.

Bearing all this in mind you have to be bold enough to take one parent in confidence. Your mother probably will be your best counsellor. Since you are very young then please wait until you are mature enough to understand the difference between getting married or respecting your parent’s view.

www.adesiflava.com

Namaste Poonam Ji, my name is Jagjit and I work as an investment banker with a leading bank in HK. I have a very simple question to ask. I am attracted towards a Chinese girl in my office and I know that even she has feelings for me. I am just worried that if I take this relationship seriously and think of getting married to her, will she accept our Hindu culture and religious practices? I am a very Hindu by heart and I would want her also to be like a traditional Indian or Hindu wife. Please guide me through this; I don’t want to repent after our marriage.

Adapting to Hindu culture will take a long time, don’t expect a Chinese girl draped in Indian attire to follow Indian culture or religion and to become a Hindu daughter - in - law overnight.Your parent’s expectations will matter a lot. Apart from that a marriage means much more than just two people being in love. Especially in India, it includes families, points-of-view, upbringing, cultural beliefs, and much more, which can make or break a relationship. Besides, choosing to go ahead you may have your own fears too. Even though you and your partner might have accepted each other’s religious values and sentiments, when it comes to bringing-up children, there is a possibility of clashes of opinions. The most important thing to remember always, and keep reminding each other, is that you have both accepted each other with the cultures that you come with for the sole reason of love. Please discuss everything with your friend. Good Luck!

Sadda HAQ

SADDA HAQ AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2015 1. In my daughter’s all-girls school, the wearing or carrying of any overt religious symbolism such as ornaments, accessories or clothing is not allowed. One can get permission if one writes a letter to the Principal explaining the requirement to wear/carry something that is seen as religious. Hence, I had to get special permission for my daughter to wear a kada (steel bangle) to school. However, she tells me that her friend wears a chain with a cross and did not have to take special permission for it? Is this race discrimination? Mrs. Amrita Singh, Tuen Muen A. Schools imposing rules for uniform and appearance is quite normal and in fact advisable as there are many benefits to having school uniform policies. However in making such rules, the school has to be accommodating of all cultures and religions and special requirements that may come up from time to time. It is nice that your daughter’s school makes accommodations when justifiable reasons are given. It is also important that schools apply these rules consistently and across the board without exceptions that are not justified. Having differential rules may amount to discrimination as the rule has been applied in one case and not the other. Even though discrimination on the ground of religion does not come under the ambit of the Race Discrimination Ordinance, there may be a case of indirect race discrimination as race and religion are very often closely linked. In this case, Sikhs, though a religious group, will be considered a distinct race because their religious requirements in terms of appearance, identify them as a distinct community. Hence, there may be a case of indirect race discrimination against the school in the situation you mention. 2. The other day while travelling by MTR, an elderly Chinese man standing next to me turned to me and rubbed his finger across my arm. He did it twice. When I asked him why he was doing that, he didn’t say anything. I believe it was because of my skin colour. It was embarrassing and humiliating. Can I complain about incidents like this to the EOC? Mr. Selva Kumar, Tung Chung

Page - 40

A. If a person engages in unwelcome, abusive, insulting or offensive behavior because of another person’s race which makes him feel threatened, humiliated or embarrassed then it is racial harassment. Racial harassment can be in any form—physical, visual, verbal or non-verbal— and even a single incident may constitute racial harassment. While the incident you describe may qualify on all the above grounds, there is one element lacking which prevents you from lodging a complaint of racial harassment with the EOC. The “relationship” between the two parties. The Race Discrimination Ordinance makes racial harassment unlawful in the areas of employment, education, provision of goods, facilities and services and a few others. In other words, racial harassment of an employee by an employer or vice versa or by colleagues, of a student by a teacher or vice versa or by other classmates, of a service provider by a customer or vice versa are all covered under the law. Unfortunately, in the incident you faced the relationship between you and the old gentleman is one of co-commuters, a relationship not covered under the present law. You could write to the MTR Corporation and ask them to put up public education messages so as to prevent incidents such as this in the future. We at the EOC are also in regular talks with public transport bodies to educate them about the anti-discrimination laws and equal treatment of people. If you need further information regarding your rights under Hong Kong’s anti-discrimination ordinances and the complaint handling procedures of the EOC, please contact:
