Namaste Desis, Yet another calendar year has reached its finality. 2017 has given us plenty to write about, and a lot to recall, reflect, and report on. One of our recent highlights has been the launch of our new website portal. After months of efforts from the entire team, the website is now running smoothly, as it continues to garner more views. Besides housing all the articles and details of our print magazine, the online portal promises to serve readers with exclusive information and reviews on popular businesses, places, and events. Along with our website, we are also launching an exclusive membership privilege card, which entitles our members to special attractions and offers from our supporters and partners. On the heels of Diwali, Hong Kongers were graced by one of the India's most renowned spiritual figures, Mr Jjaggi Vasudev, fondly known as Sadhguru. In honor of his visitation to Asia's World City, we have an article on the various number of famous, and infamous, spiritual leaders. Along with that, we have articles on personal development, spirituality, and astrology from our regular contributors Munisha Khatwani, Aunty Poonam Mehta, Sonia Samtani, and Ruhaani - aka Varsha Dodani. To facilitate our readers' plans for the upcoming festive season, we have listed an article on the possible places, events, and activities for families and young kids to celebrate Christmas. Those who prefer to stay indoors may enjoy having the latest Blue Projector model to supplement their entertainment. Meanwhile, in case anyone is looking for a new place to stay, do check out Jeet Kotai's articles on the top ten reasons why an increasing number of Indians are choosing to stay in Tung Chung. Last but not least, we have a sneak preview into the next year, as go behind the scenes of one of the cricketing franchised teams that will be participating in the Hong Kong T20 Blitz 2018. Galaxy Gladiators Lantau, among others, is gearing up to make the tournament's third season the greatest yet. Of course, more of this tournament and its teams will be featured in our next issue, Jan/Feb 2018 - so stay tuned!

On behalf of A-Desiflava, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year of 2018!

HOW DO YOU DEFINE A HAPPY CHILDHOOD?

Suraj (Sam) Samtani Managing Editor of A-Desiflava sam@adesiflava.com

Being cared for by a loving family? Living an abundant life or simply enjoying school happily? To the migrant children of India, this is far from being the case‌ Many never get the chance to enjoy the above as their childhood is spent in dangerous brick kilns, working 12 hours a day.

These extreme conditions jeopardize their lives, and put them at risk of accidents and injuries. Each year, 15 million children and their parents migrate across the country to make a living. Sadly, instead of going to school, 40% of these children are enslaved as laborers.

GALAXY GLADIATORS GETS GLAMOROUS AND GENEROUS FOR HKT20 BLITZ 2018

On the cusp of the next HKT20 Blitz season, Galaxy Gladiators Lantau have declared their determination to glide towards glory with glamour, grit, and generosity.

O

ne of the two team coowners, Vinod Dhariwal, shares his views on the team’s journey so far, and announces their gameplan to not only lift the trophy, but also raise the lives, lifestyles, and livelihoods of several others. The highlight of his plans was the Galaxy Gladiators Cricket Kids Scholarship Program.

Vinod Dhariwal – Co-Owner Galaxy Gladiators Lantau

Following a rainy inaugural season in 2016, Dhariwal joined with Delhian Suresh Khandewal to take joint ownership, interest and control of Galaxy Gladiators Lantau in the subsequent year. Naturally, the owners dreamed of seeing the Gladiators being recognised as victors, and winning many fans and followers. To manifest the former, Dhariwal worked towards gearing his team with prolific and popular players, which helped maintained a largely buildup prior to the tournament. From players, to coaches, and even mentors, the team boasted of countless reputable names who had proven themselves repeatedly at the world class level. Their mentor, Brian Lara, still holds the record for having the highest individual score in Test cricket, while their icon player, Kumar Sangakarra, is currently the second-highest run-scorer in ODI cricket and the fifth-highest run scorer in Tests. Despite their gargantuan efforts though, the Gladiators were unable to get the results they aimed for in 2017. Tournament glory eluded them,

Suresh Khandelwal – Co-Owner Galaxy Gladiators Lantau yet Dhariwal remained nonchalant. It was the first complete HKT20 Blitz tournament staged in Hong Kong, and from Dhariwal’s perspective, his team was the tournament’s biggest victors as they gained the greatest learning curve. Going into the third season of the HKT20 Blitz, Gladiators have taken expert advice and will take the field with a revised game plan.

16

BUZZ IN TOWN

adesiflava.com

Above and beyond the team’s performance in the tournament though, the co-owners are equally intent on having a galactic impact on their fans, followers, friends and family. From the very beginning, Dhariwal ensured that for every effort spent on the sport, equal attention was also given to ensure that the fans and followers are well taken care of. The Gladiators have hosted multiple events and campaigns for members of the community, especially for children. Last season, the team organised BlitzKidz, which was a 22-team cricket tournament for children in Tung Chung. With a participation rate of over 200 kids, the attendance rate was also equally high. The event was a huge success, as it was followed avidly by the sizable live crowd and their respective friends and family.

BlitzKidz– Community outreach program organized in 2017 Gladiators hosted another similar cricket event for kids, called “Galaxy Gladiators Adesiflava Box Cricket League.” This was a 2-day indoor cricket tournament for adults, which was just as successful as the KPL. The response from the community not only helped bring in footfalls and commercials gains, but the frenzy illustrated how valuable cricket was to the community. The tournament comprised

Galaxy Gladiators Box Cricket Tournament organised in May 2017 of 22 teams of 11 each, while among the crowds were underprivileged, yet keen enthusiasts of the game. Dhariwal was quick to notice this, and was determined to help out as much as possible. For the coming year, the plan is to also have players, coaches and other support staff visit schools across Hong Kong. Besides teaching techniques, technicalities and tactics of the game, the Gladiators also intend to guide the young guns with valuable life lessons. Principles of sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline and work ethics are universal guidelines that should be taught early, in order to be applied to all areas of a person’s life. By using cricket as a metaphor, kids are to learn that matches cannot solely be won by muscle strength alone. Dhariwal recites his own example; he personally values being an opening batsman and bowler more than any other player, and it reflects his philosophy of taking initiative and facing challenges fearlessly. The impact of such sessions in local schools could be even more effective and hard hitting than any cricket match or practice session. To top it off, the Gladiators are even planning to introduce a special scholarship scheme for interested

Volume 6 | Issue 6

young guns, called “Galaxy Gladiators Cricket Kids Scholarship Program”. The Gladiators selection committee will shortlist then choose five children between the ages of 12-16 to be awarded the scholarship. This will entitle the winners to a cash bonus, along with cricketing gear, merchandise, and cricketing mentorship for the course of one year. In order to be eligible for the scholarship, every child must be endorsed and nominated by a cricket coach. Those who are interested but are having difficulty finding a coach endorsement can approach Tabarak Dar. Dar is the team Manager of Galaxy Gladiators Lantau and his contact number is +852-91479694. The intent of this initiative is to not only spread the awareness and exposure of the sport, but to also make an invaluable contribution towards community members. Having been a successful entrepreneur in Hong Kong, with roots stemming from India, Dhariwal has taken on this venture to invest in the growth of cricket and individuals in Hong Kong. As a former cricketer for Haryana, he is able to personally understand and relate to the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of a professional cricketer. Buoyed by the recent acceptance of Ireland and Afghanistan into Test cricket, Dhariwal too anticipates Hong Kong to enhance its playing prospects every year. With such philosophies and perspectives, Dhariwal and his team at Galaxy Gladiators Lantau are rightfully confident of seeing success in the upcoming HKT20 Blitz. Without unveiling any secrets or strategies, Dhariwal promises that the next season is granted to be a glorified one for his team. Of course, the icing would be tournament glory, but even the goodwill garnered will make the proverbial cake taste just as sweet as success, regardless of the scores or results.

TOP 10 REASONS INDIANS CHOOSE TO LIVE IN TUNG CHUNG

Having personally lived in Tung Chung, I have a personal affinity with the area. Besides being near the airport, Tung Chung offers many benefits for residents and visitors alike, of all ages, and from all backgrounds. Here are ten of the reasons why Tung Chung stands out as one of the best places in Hong Kong.

1. Clubhouse Facilities There are many buildings in Tung Chung with elegant and accessible clubhouses. Most of the clubhouses are laden with facilities that allow people of all ages and walks of life to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The clubhouses commonly host innumerable activities like tennis, snooker, and squash. Moreover, every estate has at least one swimming pool and gymnasium. Only those living in Tung Chung would be able to avail the clubhouse benefits.

2. Child Friendly Environment Tung Chung has plenty of schools around and kids can be seen freely wandering the neighborhood at all times. There are lots of parks for kids around Tung Chung. In fact, Caribbean Coast has three different play areas made for kids. Events to celebrate Halloween, Easter and Christmas take place in every estate, and kids have plenty of options in Tung Chung to play throughout the year. The security guards are helpful and friendly, and there is sufficient regulation to ensure the Kids are taken good care of at all times.

22

LOCAL

3. Pet Friendly Most estates in Tung Chung allow residents to have pets. There are all breeds of dogs seen in Tung Chung. Usually, people are seen walking their pets at night in one of the various parks or paths across the area. While, there are a lot of open spaces for people to take their pets, the most pet friendly estate is Caribbean Coast.

4. Weekend Serenity I personally do not enjoy if anyone interrupts my peace during a weekend. Living in Tung Chung ensures that you can get your weekends’ worth of peace. You can spend the entire day around Tung Chung and put your feet up and relax. Even if something important comes up in the city, it will only take you 45 minutes to reach there. The important things can wait till Monday.

5. Restaurants Tung Chung offers a great variety of diners. Every estate boasts of a variety of restaurants with a fusion of cuisines.

adesiflava.com

There is a restaurant at every few steps and visitors as well as residents are unlikely to be left hungry for choices.

6.Citygate Outlets Tung Chung is a great place for shopping. The outlets offer attractive deals from reputable brands at affordable prices. This would appeal to shoppers of all tastes.

7. Indian Community There is a closely knit Indian circle in Tung Chung. Diwali balls and other religious events are organized from time to time. Sadashiv Temple in Tung Chung organizes events like Navratri, Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi and Mahashivratri. The Indians also gather together weekly for recreational activities such as cricket and rummy.

8. Tourist Attractions Tung Chung is very near to tourists’ spots. The Ngong Ping cable car is available from the Tung Chung MTR.

Volume 6 | Issue 6

There is an Olympic trail that goes from Tung Chung to Mui Wo, and even leads to the Lantau Buddha. Pui O and Discovery bay are also nearby, just as is the Disneyland Theme Park and Inspiration Lake.

9. The view The sky from Tung Chung looks like a painter’s masterpiece. There are many Tung Chung residents who regularly post pictures on their social media of beautiful locales in Tung Chung. In fact, professional photographers make special trips to Tung Chung just to capture the perfect shot. The view from most balconies either boast of a sea view or a picturesque mountain. In most cases, the view acts as a tranquilizer in today’s stressful lives.

10. Rent Most of Tung Chung’s leased flats are reasonably priced. Residents get fantastic facilities for paying just a fraction of the costs for flats in many other areas of Hong Kong, which are obnoxiously priced.

THE GOOD GURUS AND BAD BABAS OF INDIA

Why do bad babas have such a fan following? Don’t the good gurus have some imperfections as humans? How do we discern between them? Read on to find out more about gurus, babas and idolism.

I

ndia is a land of holy priests, babas, and gurus. Earlier, these noble souls taught people the importance of spirituality and enlightenment in lives. But with the passage of time, many gurus focused on exploiting people physically and fulfilling their greedy motives. Nowadays, famous gurus are being in the headlines every now and then for both good and wrong reasons. Every guru teaches his or her followers the epic ways of leading a peaceful life, while some of them are also ready to aid the weaker sections of the society. Some propagate the agenda of staying relaxed with their helpful meditation techniques, and some contribute their funds significantly to charities and NGOs. This is when people start blindly following these babas and comparing them with the almighty. At that moment, these individuals are not concerned about if they are good or bad; they are only familiar with one thing that their ‘BABA ROCKS’. In the last decade, a few iconic swamis were caught running sex scandals in their ashrams, while some of them were accused of raping or physically abusing their female followers. However, we take a bow to these loyal followers who still love and support them no matter what.

But the man who inspired people to make yoga a part of their daily regime, didn’t do adequate yoga himself. As per the reports, Bapu attained divinity at the age of 8. As the time passed by, he developed a medicine by using cow urine as a major ingredient and wrote several religious books including Gurugita. However, he was put behind bars for molesting a minor in his ashram.

It’s the core responsibility of a guru to preach the message of peace and unity among his or her followers. There are gurus who don’t get enticed by media, fame, and money, and then, there are others who want to gain media attention and be worshipped as Gods. The gurus with their evil deeds don’t think twice before deceiving their followers, or sexually assaulting them, nor are they concerned with how it’d affect their public image as they know the people would still be there to defend them in the harshest scenarios. When governments fail to fulfill the demands of their public, people start relying on these babas to seek peacefulness and optimism in their lives. The gurus who are genuine have got an only mission in life, that is, to spread peace among their followers and bring all the sections and religions under one hood of spirituality. Let’s admit that gurus, irrespective of their agendas or deeds, are imperfect humans just as we are. There are people who believe that Osho was completely fascinated with sex, and some say that it’s impossible for humans to follow Avdhoot’s practices in the real life. But when we love somebody, we love them with our whole heart neglecting all of their odds and flaws. Why not find your own guru in a common man, and appreciate his or her positive traits?

Asaram Bapu - Is he a God or a fraud?

BRIGHTNESS AMIDST DARKNESS While we often celebrate the presence of brightness, how many times have you stopped to appreciate or even accept darkness? Many religious scriptures cite stories where light triumphs over darkness, which marks a period of growth and enlightenment. In fact, the term enlightenment is when we bring light (or wisdom) into darkness (or ignorance). However, if we didn’t realise darkness, perhaps we may have never acknowledged the light around us. The world we live in is often referred to as the ‘third dimension’, which is the place where we tend to understand ourselves, each other, and life’s phenomena through opposites; we have light and dark, wet and dry, up and down, in and out, and so on. Unfortunately, many of us have been conditioned to judge the darkness as ‘wrong’ or ‘bad’ instead of simply perceiving it as a natural experience of life. This often leads us to reject parts of our own darkness, as well as the darkness around us. What if, instead of pushing away feelings of anger, sadness and fear, we recognized them as part of our life by lifting the veil of judgment and replacing it with unconditional acceptance of ourselves and in others?

The world we live in is often referred to as the ‘third dimension.

For starters, we could be in more peace, and the emotional charge of our feelings would also pass by quicker, sans the resistance. Just like happiness is a transient experience, sadness is too; in fact all emotions are ‘energy in motion’ - an energy that we feel in our mind and body for a short period of time until it passes. Granted, this is a tall order and not easy – but that’s part of the game of life! In this sense lightness and darkness are both equally important for our experience in this life, and our job is to allow both into our world without judgment. We will all go through periods of darkness in our human experience, as it is an inevitable part of life. If we can accept the darkness as just another experience of life, we could grow exponentially, and finally see the light at the end of every challenge, for without darkness, even the value of light is dim.

SPIRITUAL RESPONSE THERAPY

W

Spiritual Response Therapy Practitioner, Ruhaani, shares her views and advice on how we can transform ourselves so we can lead happier, humble and honest life.

hen we consider having control over our life, often it feels like we are calling the shots. As the universe presents us with situations that are not what we deem as favourable, we may fall to our knees and give up our control by calling it fate or destiny. Alternatively, when someone else causes tidal waves in our life, once again we forfeit our control by blaming them for their actions or speech. We make ourselves feel as though we are no longer in control and then react to the situation usually through some negative emotion like anger, grief, sadness, vengefulness, jealousy, or maybe even unworthiness. If we were to think of each situation or person in our life as a mirror reflecting back to us the energies, thoughts or

beliefs that we emanate, we would want to retrieve our control and power. We would know that only we are able to change that reflection that we see. How does one do this? We could look at any area in our life that we consider to be “out of alignment” and consider the energies, emotions, actions or thoughts that we are contributing to it. It is not only the things we say, but our intention as well. Although we may say a positive statement (like an affirmation), we may not be sending out the equivalent energies, so the universe reverts by returning what we had sent out energetically. If we want to change that area, we need to add to it positively from EVERY angle (emotionally, verbally, intentionally, energetically and physically – through our actions). This means that the introduction of ANY negativity (through even a small deed

or an action) would throw this equation back to give us the old result again. By understanding that we have full control, we empower ourselves to sculpt the kind of picture we want to look at; this one belief alone is a game changer! So, the next time something throws us off balance, STOP… evaluate the situation from an objective (unemotional) space. When we do this, it gives us a bird’s eye view and we give ourselves the opportunity to see the most perfect solution for us (one that could have been missed completely had we allowed ourselves to get emotional and lose control). The key question to ask ourselves in those trying moments is “Is this worth losing my peace and balance over?” This does take practice, but as we practice this, it does become easier and eventually becomes our natural reaction… to not react.

THE MAESTRO BEHIND MULTI LINES:

KARMJIT SINGH SANDHU

Having started his business from humble beginnings, he has since transformed into an affluent and inspirational entrepreneur.

T That Karmjit was able to overcome adversity remains one of his greatest strengths that still characterises his approach today, even as his firm is now making billions.

o make an empire from an idea is the hallmark of an idol. In 2006, Karmjit Singh Sandhu - aka Johnny - founded Multi Lines, and over the years, the company has since grown into a billion dollar company. With an impressive annual growth rate of 70% Karmjit has taken his company to unprecedented heights. As his brand continues to multiply its growth, Karmjit himself has emerged as an inspirational and aspirational leader. Karmjit was born in the mid 1970s in Hong Kong. Soon after, he spent his early childhood in a village in Thathian, Amritsar, Punjab, India, until he was in grade 8. Karmjit returned to Hong Kong to complete his secondary education. Having faced a modest childhood, Karmjit was determined to be a

breadwinner and support his family from an early age. Such was his dedication that he even accepted compromising working conditions and pay when he first started, at the age of 21, for a trading firm called Shivalaya. Over the years, he picked up many tricks of the trade and was mentored by influential, inspirational and insightful individuals. After a period of struggles in his youth, Karmjit Singh came into his own when he started Multi Lines. Once again, his beginning was humble, as he started the company alone in a small space comprising of just a table and chair. Yet Karmjit remain committed to his company and vision, and started off by offering LED lights to large businesses. By his own admission, the first few years were challenging, and it took time and hard work to build up a reliable set of clients, as well as other stakeholders. That Karmjit was able to overcome adversity remains one of his greatest strengths that still characterises his approach today, even as his film is now making billions. Karmjit’s business now operates in multiple industries, and offers a plethora of products and services. Since diversifying from LED lights, his product lines include: Christmas lights and decoration, solar lights and decoration, gift and gadgets, health and beauty, tools, pet care, home appliances, electrical accessories, OEMs, private label products and packaging designs, conducting factory audits, quality control, certification and shipping. The journey from having a single offering, to now being the incumbent of multiple product lines has been

remarkable for Karmjit. As he reflects back, Karmjit notes that one of the cornerstone to his success has been his adaptability. “My customer’s needs comes before and above anything else,” he hints. For anyone in the know, the electronics market is very dynamic and is a place where only the fittest survive. That Karmjit and his brand not only survived, but thrived is testament of his immense success. This would entail having the courage and confidence to make decisions practically and promptly, especially in the face of challenges. Looking back, Karmjit is most thankful to his critics and adversaries. “The strength that one can gain from failures is unlike any other,” he advises. When asked about his idol, Karmjit is quick to mention his own father, Sardar Raghbir Singh Sandu. Karmjit watched and observed how his father handled struggles. While Karmjit had his own challenges, he admitted that his father had seen days where the only vision was to find resources for survival. Seeing such strenuous situations has kept Karmjit overwhelmed with gratitude for his success. To overcome the inertia that drove many businesses into bankruptcy, Karmjit strongly advises his fans and followers to be open and receptive to changes. As an expression of his humility and gratitude, Karmjit regularly takes on endeavours to help, contribute, and donate to people. This philosophy of seva was instilled by his grandparents, who had taught him all the values and practices

35

of being a Sikh in Thathian. As Karmjit grew, he extended his roots as he strived to imbibe the teachings from his role models. He later even applied them into his business. Till date, Karmjit constantly encourages his Multi Lines stakeholders to contribute to the community. Personally, Karmjit believes a lot in the philosophy of accounting. Not just financially, but he maintains that every person must be “accountable for every work” they do. His trading business epitomises his motto, as not just in his work, but even in his personal life, he tries to “source for the best.” Today, Multilines itself has developed an image for being the source of the best; best products, and best services. While it may not have come easy, Karmjit stands tall as a proud leader who has used his experiences, passions and skills, to become a man behind one of the greatest trading businesses in Hong Kong today.

To overcome the inertia that drove many businesses into bankruptcy, Karmjit strongly advises his fans and followers to be open and receptive to changes.

ASTROLOGY BY

Munisha Khatwani for December 2017 Aries:

You might decide to take certain decisions in your own hands as you feel this is the best that you can do at the moment, says your planet Venus. You are also in the mood to help a friend out financially and he or she will appreciate the same, says your Mars planet.

Taurus:

This month your motto needs to be ‘keep the faith,’ as you might not see the light at the end of the tunnel yet. The cards advise you to remember that the light is not an illusion, but the tunnel is, as better times are expected ahead. Your Venus is in a positive position which could mean that some blocked money comes out.

Gemini:

Travel is greatly on your mind and you need to focus on your trips as they are likely to benefit you. Those stuck in legal matters will have to be brave and brace it up. On the personal front, instead of trying to control the situation, try to be more adjusting, as it could help you in the long run.

Cancer:

Be ready to release things from your life if they are not working out for you. You need to figure what is best for you professionally this month, says your planet Mercury. The journey this month, on the personal front, is quite pleasant and you have something to smile about.

Leo:

You have reasons to smile this month, as your relationship with your partner could improve greatly. Your Mars planet does favours for you, so your hidden enemies come out in the open this month and you will be able to face them heads on. For students, this is a good time to concentrate on your studies.

Virgo: Finally, you breathe a sigh of

relief as your problems start to subside this month, says your Saturn planet. For those who have been having relationship problems, this month could bring in

visible improvements. Financial issues are also reduced this month as you get help from a new family member.

Libra:

Your Health will be a bit of concern this month and you cannot make any rash decision regarding the same. Life might not be as simple as you are expecting it to be this month, but your cards suggest patience is the key as you have got the card of the Devil. The present time may not be the best for you, so just be patient.

Scorpio:

If you are expecting that things will change as you want, then that is something you need to change your thought process on, says your Mercury planet. You need to patient as good things come to those who wait. You might have a minor argument with a friend, so you need to keep your patience this month.

Sagittarius: You will be feeling guilty

about certain friendships this month, as you realise that you could have been wrong and might have overreacted in certain situations. You need to drop your ego and apologise to those who you have hurt, says your planet Sun. Your work is stable, and you are likely to reap its benefits.

Capricorn: It is better to speak the truth even if it hurts, rather than avoiding it on the personal front. You are looking for some new ventures on the work front but now is not the right time, says your stars. For those looking to get married, you might think of opting the arranged way. Aquarius: Your social calendar will

be very busy this month, as you have a lot of commitments lined up. You may try to balance your personal and professional life, but this month might be a little difficult for you to do so. For those looking for a job, however, this could be a lucky month for you, as you might have something to smile about says your cards.

Pisces: You are not in the correct state of mind this month, and you may be feeling very low about certian aspects in your life. You need to keep yourself mentally occupied with work, in order to distract yourself from your issues this month. Travel is on the cards and you may be planning a trip soon, says your planet Sun. The good news is that some blocked money is expected to come this month. Munisha Khatwani has been a famous and popular professional tarot card reader for the last 18 years. f we have fever for example, we will go to the doctor he will prescribe us some medicine we will buy it from pharmacy and onwards pharmacist becomes our doctor. Sometimes we are taking the same antibiotic for viral fever which is in vain. Popping pill for low grade fever, headache, cold coryza or even a mild skin rash is now seen as normal. But no it is not. Overuse of these drugs induced illnesses called as iatrogenic illnesses which are much more difficult, complex and critical to treat. So one has to be cautious and not self prescribe and consume medicine for minor ailments on regular basis making it habit. It is vital to understand what we are doing with our body and worse we are allowing to be done under the name of self prescription. There are many alternative ways which we can use to heal ourselves in more natural way.

Homeopathy is one of them‌‌‌ In homoeopathy we are giving medicine in ultra-diluted substances, mostly in pills form which will only stimulate your natural power of healing your body with the help of vital force. In homeopathy the medicine is given on basis on individualization, hence different patient can get different medicine for the same disease. So the homeopathy medicines cannot be generalised, and each person needs to be given specialised treatment.

AUNTY MVP

Volume 6 | Issue 6

DEAR AUNTY POONAM Each issue, we invite readers to send us questions under anonymity about on personal dynamics and relations. Here are 3 selected questions from those recently sent to us:

Question 1: Dear Poonam Aunty My name is Rahul and I am having problems making friends. I am in my late twenties, but I am still very hesitant when meeting and interacting with new people. At the same time, I prefer not to mix my professional and personal lives, and so I am intentionally distant with my colleagues. Given this, please advise your suggestion on how I could meet new people and make new friends.

Answer 1: Dear Rahul, Understanding other people isn’t easy because we view the world through our own filters and assume that if WE do something a certain way, then it must be good for everybody. Be open-minded and gradually learn to trust people. Friendship is all about trust. You must socialize; human communication is very important. It builds confidence and fosters the healthy sense of self-esteem that also leads to inner stability. People who have low self-esteem or fear of what others think may struggle in developing good relationships. You can be friendly with your colleagues while maintaining your professional standards. You can approach people according to your interest. Retaining friendship depends on your comfort zone, your likes and dislikes, and how you express your thoughts and emotions while respecting those of others.

Question 2: Dear Poonam Aunty, I am Resham, a recent university graduate. As I am currently looking

for a job, I have been quite disturbed by the number of men worldwide who have recently been accused of assault or abuse. I would like to know your advice on how to deal with men in power. What are the warning signs to watch out for, and how can I set my standards and boundaries from the very onset?

Answer 2: Dear Resham, Abusing or exploiting others has been recorded since the beginning of human history, but more cases are being reported now. Men who abuse are extremely charming; their personality is deceiving and they generally behave differently at home and in public. Be aware of local laws against personal, racial and gender abuse. You can look into your company or office standard on such issues and guidelines. Be familiar with cultural and social norms of the place and people where you live and work. Abuse can be verbal, physical, emotional or psychological. Be assertive about your rights. When you experience any such abusive expression from anyone, you protest and complain to your company and to the police. There can be several reasons why people like to abuse others. However, you can resist – get help and ensure that the abuser is handled by law enforcers.

Question 3: Dear Poonam Aunty, I am Kiran, a 40 year old spinster. Till date, I still live with my parents, and I have been trying to move out since many years now. Their response is always the same: until I am unmarried, I will stay with them. While of course I love them, and I will continue to keep in contact

and look after my parents, how can I reason with them that I would now like my own independence, regardless of my marital status?

Answer 3: Dear Kiran, Please note, a mother’s treasure is her daughter. Every parent has concern for his or her unmarried girls and the thought of girls living on their own is unthinkable as they come from an old school of thought as well as due to cultural stigma. As you mentioned, they do not consider your age or your capabilities, just that you are single is their only concern. However, if you look from their point of view and you will find the source of their worry and fear. You need to diffuse their beliefs by presenting to them how being independent helps to develop your personality; you can understand a lot more about yourself, and as a result, you can be more efficient and much happier. Ensure them that the care and love you have for each other will remain the same. Consequently, maintaining a healthy relationship will be upshot in better understanding, and it will enable both parties to gain more respect for each other. Majorly important is your happiness, not how society will perceive your living alone. Involve your parents when finding a place for yourself. When setting your kitchen, take guidance from your mom. ‘Mothers know it all’ – make her your best friend.
