I always stood outside Galaxy Apartments in Bandstand, Bandra, Mumbai for more than 30 minutes whenever I visited Mount Mary Church to catch a glimpse of my favourite star Salman Khan. I joined the gym after seeing Salman’s OH OH JAANE JAANA SONG from the movie Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya. My sister and I got beaten once by my father as we both jumped out of our beds, and hurt someone while getting right in front of TV to get a close look at Salman’s interview. Salman Khan! The so called BHAI of Bollywood used to be my favourite actor, till I recently read an article about Ravindra Patil. Ravindra Patil, a young Mumbai Police constable who was appointed as the security guard of Salman Khan died as he didn’t give up and believed in truth and justice. Ravindra, was the key eye witness to Salman’s very famous hit and run case, he revealed the truth in his statement against Salman Khan. Ravindra Patil was tortured, threatened, removed from his job and disowned by his family until he finally gave up and died a lonely man’s life with no one willing to even collect his dead body. Ravindra Patil is the real hero and not Salman Khan as Ravindra did not change his statement till his last breath. Salman Khan promotes ‘Being Human’, where was the human in him when Ravindra Patil was dying? I grew up trying to emulate Salman, but no more. Ravindra Patil, you are the real Hero. Faiz Qezilbash has done a great job in putting together the story of Ravindra Patil in our cover story for this issue. Faiz, has also put together information on some of the haunted places in Hong Kong. We wouldn’t know if these places are really haunted unless we experience ourselves. In fact one of the haunted places is very close to where I live in Tsim Sha Tsui. Are these places really haunted? Check out for yourselves, the list of these places is now available in our Featured section. On Demand, is a new section that I’ve added in this issue. I will publish articles in this section based on the responses received from readers in the past. Mr.Jatin Lahori sent me 3 emails before I decided to publish his favourite article about the Hijra Tribe of India. With our regulars like Aunty MVP, Globe Trotter, Astrology, South Asian Faces and Kids section, this issue has surely turned out to be one that readers will relish. Please do send me your feedback and reviews directly to my email : gaurav@adesiflava.com Enjoy reading this issue.

Salman Khan-
Being Human or Inhuman?
S
alman Khan, a man loved by the teaming millions of India, a superstar, an entertainer. Worshipped for his rippling muscles and amusing wisecracks, Khan enjoys demi-god status largely thanks to his fans and Hindi cinema viewers across the globe. An actor whose films have the biggest openings, a feat that even his contemporaries Aamir and Shahrukh, haven’t mastered yet, his fans literally hold on to every word uttered by him and his following is iconic.

Cover Story Personally, I am an admirer and although he might have never convinced me as an actor, I am also one of those many cinemagoers, who have been enamored by his colossal stardom. Celebrities, however important they might be, are human at the end of the day, and that they will make mistakes is inevitable. In the wise words of the legendary Vincent Van Gogh “Even the knowledge of my own fallibility cannot keep me from making mistakes. Only when I fall do I get up again”. It is human to err they say, and a wise man learns from his mistakes. Unfortunately this does not hold true for the subject in question. Khan has repeatedly been in the news for the wrong reasons, whether it is because of his turbulent relationship with the press, his brawls at public venues or the infamous black buck incident. Labeled as one of Bollywood’s bad boys, a category in which he provides company to close friend Sanjay Dutt, Salman Khan has some serious soul searching to do. And if all this wasn’t enough, along came the drunk driving case, which of course takes the cake in his long list of misdoings. On 28 September 2002, Khan was arrested for rash and negligent driving. His car ran into a bakery in Mumbai; one person who was sleeping on the pavement outside the bakery died and three others were injured in the mishap. Charges of culpable homicide were laid against him, but later dropped. On 24 July 2013, he was formally charged with culpable homicide in the case, to which he pleaded not guilty.
Twenty-four year old Ravendra Patil was a police constable in the lowest rung of the Mumbai police hierarchy and was assigned as an unarmed bodyguard to the star, when he started receiving threatening calls from the underworld in early 2002.
(Source: Wikipedia)
The possibility of Khan being in an inebriated state, whilst driving his Landcruiser SUV was not overruled and it angered many. It was later established that a blood sample taken post his arrest, revealed 65 milligrams of alcohol, which was enough for him to be drunk at the time of the accident. In this hullabaloo of the public and the press ripping the actor apart, a vital element of this tragedy went unnoticed.

Cover Story
Ravindra Patil, few days before he died Patil accompanied Khan on all his outings and was in the vehicle which was supposedly being driven by the actor on the fateful night of September the 28th. This made Patil one of the prime witnesses in the case, and little did he know that this incident would seal his fate for the worst. In his statements to the police, Patil maintained that it was Khan who was driving the SUV when it ran over the victims sleeping on the pavement and that the actor was in an inebriated state. He also mentioned that Khan was so stunned to see people wailing and crying under the wheels of his car that he chose to flee the spot rather than take the victims to the hospital.
Page - 10
Those close to Patil admitted that he was under enormous pressure to change his statement and while it was unclear as to who was putting pressure, some say that it might have been Salman’s well-wishers from the police force, while others claim that those talking to Patil were Salman’s close friends from the film industry. Regardless of who these individuals were, Patil seemed to be reeling under pressure and was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. In 2006 witnesses connected to the case were being questioned, and Patil started missing his court hearings, in order to avoid crossexamination by top brass lawyers hired by Khan and also to stay away from the constant gaze of the media, which was desperate to squeeze a sensational story out of him. www.adesiflava.com
Cover Story He chose to run away from Mumbai for a few days, since this whole episode had taken a huge physical and emotional toll on him and this he felt would be the best way to steer clear of this high profile drama which had made his life a living hell.

ADVERTISE
The repercussions were most unexpected and an arrest warrant was issued in his name, since the proceedings of the court were being held up due to his absence. Subsequently he was arrested from a hotel in Mahabaleswar, just outside Mumbai and was imprisoned at Arthur Road Jail.
WITH US
The worst was yet to come. At the Arthur Road Jail Patil was lodged with hardened criminals and in spite of him going on record and saying that he went absconding as he was mentally disturbed at the thought of being cross-examined by defence lawyers, nobody seemed to be interested.
Hong Kong's first lifestyle magazine for
After his release from jail he lost his job and was disowned by his family. A man crushed by his circumstances, he went missing again and was later found in 2007 at the Sewri Municipal Hospital in Mumbai. He had begged on the streets prior to being brought to the hospital and years of mental trauma clubbed with a drinking problem had reduced him to a skeleton. To make matters worse he had contracted drug-resistant tuberculosis.
South Asians
On the 4th of October, 2007, Ravindra Patil breathed his last. His family was not aware of his death and his brothers who were later informed, came forward to perform the last rites. We are not here to play judge, jury and executioner. However the question to ask is what led to this atrocious miscarriage of justice? Also how does the charitable, gold hearted Salman Khan feel about it? Khan’s charity Being Human is known for many a good deed and is as many would call it, his small little effort at philanthropy. While the actor continues to bask in the sunshine of his success, an innocent man was sent to his grave. A reluctant, unwilling participant stuck in a game that he did not wish to play. He just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. The law of the land is the same for all men. If found guilty, individuals should be prosecuted regardless of their social and financial stature and judgments should be sans favours and privileges. It would be apt to quote lines from one of Khan’s films which are “Mujpe ek ehsaan karna, ki mujhpe koi ehsaan mat karna”. Once proven guilty, he should be made to pay for his mistakes, just as any other offender in the dock.

The Last Tinsel Warriors
Hijras- Shadow tribe of the Orient A decayed reminder of Lucknow’s past, Were the transvestites and eunuchs of the ghetto, In women’s’ clothes and with cheap jewelry, making lewd jokes And begging; the darkness of the sexual urge finding this ritual, Semigrotesque, safe public expression. -VS Naipaul: A million mutinies now
H
ave you experienced them? They always come in a flurry of vibrant color and tinsel, a big, bawdy bunch. Chiffon saris, indiscreet sequined blouses, cheap lipstick, hair oiled and coiled. A cacophony of claps and the rhythmic beat of the Dhol usually mark their arrival.
They are the Hijras. Stranger than any elixir, with more secretive myths than any other urban tribe, hijras are a sight generally unique to South-east Asia.Dressed like erratic caricatures, they sing jocular raunchy songs, tell erotic jokes and carry the license to be generally lewd. They walk with a grace hard to fathom and to tell you honestly, if you aren’t prepared, you’re in for quite an experience! Hijras are physiological males who have feminine sex identity. Often perceived as the ‘THIRD SEX’, they are marked by distinctly feminine gestures and clothing. Their presence in society is justified by many Hindu myths. The word hijra is Hindustani, derived from the Arabic root ‘hjr’ meaning “leaving one’s tribe”. Translated into English as “Eunuch” or “Hermaphrodite” where the irregularity of the male genitalia is central to the definition. Considered the harbingers of joy and good luck, their traditional occupation is begging for alms when bestowing blessings on male babies and weddings. Welcomed in homes, to drive away the evil-eye at auspicious occasions of a new birth, marriage or housewarmings, they are handed large quantities of cash for their services as the Devil-Damners, they are nevertheless kept at a safe hands distance. It seems ironic that the hijras, who are unable to reproduce, have the power to bestow fertility blessings on brides.
Page - 12
www.adesiflava.com
On Demand A PRIVILEGED PAST Hijras have a recorded history in south-east Asia since the Kama Sutra period, colored with legends, part spiritual and part survival. During Moghal times, hijras were kept as guards to protect royal females, without any risk of sexual overtures towards them. They held sanctioned positions in royal courts and in the homes of the nobility. Nizams and nawabs patronized the hijras by giving them land near the royal palace. Two of the most prestigious families among the hijras are called the Badshahwallas and Wazirwallas - the king’s men and the minister’s men, respectively. Hindu society found another purpose for hijras, based on the lore about their spiritual powers; male transvestism became a part of several esoteric Hindu ritual practices. Hijras were now welcomed to ceremonies and celebrations as entertainers and good luck charms in south-east Asian families. Hijras are mentioned in the Kama Sutra, which contains an entire chapter on how to receive pleasure from a eunuch. Hijras clearly had an accepted status within Hindu mythology and Islamic culture.
THE MYTH AND LORE The hijra lore goes back a long way back. One can trace their origins to myths in Ramayana and Mahabharata. Rama, while leaving for the forest for 14 years, asked his followers, all the `men and women’ to return to the city. Hijras alone decide to stay with him. Impressed with their devotion, Rama sanctions them the power to confer blessings on auspicious occasions. Many Hindu deities are linked to hijras; such as Arjun, who lived for a year as eunuch, Vishnu, who transformed himself in to the most beautiful woman in the world in order to defeat a demon by seducing him, Shiva, who is both male and female, and Krishna’s son Samba, who was a homosexual and cross dresser.
A DUBIOUS PRESENT One walks into the impoverished, dark by-lanes behind flea markets in glam cities of Bombay and Bangkok, and comes across these old discolored doorways opening into cobbled courtyards. This is where one sees the real person behind the tinsel. It’s a tight, secretive community. All hijras are part of one of seven houses which function as a sub continental joint-family system. Each house has a guru who represents them, is a teacher, as well as a mother. These communities have sustained themselves over generations by adopting young boys who are rejected by society.
www.adesiflava.com
Page - 13
On Demand Despite the golden past, hijras have an ambivalent place in society today. They are seen as having the power to confer fertility. However, this power is a “double-edged sword”. Apparently, they also have the power to curse a family with infertility and other misfortunes, topped with a generous dash of indecent verbal abuse if forbidden to perform or not paid for their performance. This explains why their social treatment is laced with fear, stigma and distaste. Ostracized by friends and family, they have formed a mysterious parallel universe of sorts. Hijras also earn their living as homosexual prostitutes, essential to the economic maintenance of their community. With changing times and gated-dwellings it is increasingly difficult for hijras to earn their livelihood the traditional way. Prejudice makes it difficult for them to get mainstream jobs. More and more of them are turning to human trafficking and drugs. The gravest threat this community faces today is AIDS. It is estimated that one in three hijras in Bombay is HIV positive. Because of their indiscriminate sexual lives, they are like ticking time-bombs. However, around the world, human rights activists are beginning to recognize the rights of transgender people. Gender Identity has to be recognized as a legitimate concept. Strong hate-crime laws, hygienic housing, education and employment opportunities, Legal gender reassignment surgeries, along with strict non-discrimination laws have to be established. In a landmark judgment in the United Kingdom, 2002, the European Court of Human Rights declared that the U.K. government’s failure to alter birth certificates of transsexual people was a breach of the European Convention on Human Rights. Of late the Asian hijra community has begun to mobilize themselves by forming a collective ‘Sangam’ an organisation working with hijras, kothis and sex workers in Bangalore. Its services include organizing a drop-in centre for hijras and kothis, conducting a series of public rallies and marches, using legal assistance in case of police harassment, and establishing links with other social movements.
ARE HIJRAS BORN OR MADE? The typical hijra is a man and undergoes ritual removal of the genitals to become a hijra. However, some have other sexually ambiguous backgrounds: they may be born intersexed, fail to develop fully at puberty, have non-functioning reproductive systems. In some cases, children are sold by their parents for money or young boys are kidnapped and castrated. Castration is a grim reality within the structure of the hijra sect. After the Arab attack in the eighth century, castration of males in order to put them on specific jobs began on a large scale. This led to the creation of the ‘third sex’ – the castrated eunuchs. Usually, castration is a crude surgery done in the most unhygienic conditions, threatening health of the patient. It is not permitted by the Indian legal statutes so is done in absolute secrecy by dais. These sexless wonders realized that perversions did exist in society. Many males found them distractingly attractive. The potential ‘femme fatale’ was born!
CONCLUSION Once employed by the sultans, the hijras live today on the fringes of society. They are now among groups with high risk of spreading HIV/AIDS. They have no safe spaces, where they are protected from prejudice and abuse. This prejudice is translated into violence, often of a brutal nature, in public spaces, police stations, prisons and even in their homes. They have few sources of eking out a livelihood. Yes, it is difficult to warm up to this strange tinsel warrior who blocks our way with exaggerated gestures, a voice so raucous attire so obscene that our immediate response is to shy away. We mutely seethe at this person’s audacity in demanding –not requesting – not begging, mind you – but demanding money in lieu of a package deal in blessings. But each one of this strange species of humanity, has a story to share. The story goes that after a eunuch dies the others of the group gives the dead body 27 beatings with their slippers so that the person is never again born as a eunuch.

Haunted places in Hong Kong H
ey what happened, did you just see a ghost? A question you might be asked if you looked bewildered or shocked. What if you really saw a ghost? As absurd and ludicrous as this may sound, there have been instances of individuals claiming to have experienced the paranormal, and some of these cases are documented, with pictures and images to support them. Another important aspect with regards to these so called paranormal experiences, are the actual locations where the witnesses or victims in some cases, claim to have encountered spirits, ghosts etc. If several episodes are connected to a particular location, the location is immediately deemed evil and is invariably termed haunted. Like most other cities across the world, Hong Kong too has its share of haunted spots and buildings, and not only will this article will tell you where they are located, but also how they earned their notorious reputations.
Page - 16
A) 31 GRANVILLE ROAD, TSIM SHA TSUI In 1999, a 23-year-old girl was kidnapped and tortured in an apartment at 31 Granville Road by three men, because she owed them HKD 20,000. The girl died a month later and her body was decapitated. The killers stuffed her head inside a Hello Kitty doll, and the case which came to be known as the “Hello Kitty Murder” caught everyone’s attention. Her killers were sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment for manslaughter and in spite of them being made to pay for their crimes; it is said that there are CCTV images of her ghost lurking outside the building’s entrance. B) SAI YING PUN COMMUNITY COMPLEX The Sai Ying Pun Community Complex was constructed in 1892 as the Civil Hospital nurses’ quarters, but was turned into a mental asylum in the 1930s. During the Second World War the asylum was used as an execution hall, before being converted back into a mental asylum at the end of the war. In the 1970s, the building was abandoned and ruined by two fires, but was subsequently turned into a community complex. Although the structure underwent significant metamorphosis, there have been cases of people reporting unusual activity whilst driving past the complex, which includes spirits sightings, the presence of ghosts and also abnormal screams. C) NAM KOO TERRACE A two-storey house in the Wanchai district on Hong Kong island, Nam Koo Terrace is considered haunted and visitors claim that they have heard screams of tortured women and have even seen green fireballs floating in the air. During the Second World War, Japanese soldiers made Nam Koo Terrace a military brothel and local women were raped and tortured inside the house. A group of teenagers visited the house in 2003 in anticipation of encountering ghosts and evil spirits. One of the girls became possessed and had to be hospitalized. D) TSUNG TSAI YUEN, TAI PO About 60 years back, a group of teachers and students went on a school picnic to Tsung Tsai Yuen and it started to rain. Although they managed to find cover under the Mang Gui Kiu Bridge, which was very close to the picnic site, they were destined to meet a terrible end, and a sudden landslide swept them away, burying them alive. Since this accident took place, drivers in the area have reported sightings of pale-faced children trying to stop them. A minibus driver has also claimed to have given a ghost woman a ride. www.adesiflava.com

E) BRIDE’S POOL Beautiful, yet spooky is what many claim. Legend has it that many many years ago a wedding procession was passing by the pool, when one of the bride’s chair bearers slipped and fell, which for some reason led to the deaths of the entire procession. Witnesses have reported seeing her ghost in the pool, still dressed in traditional wedding attire. F) CHINESE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG, (MONG MAN WAI BUILDING) The Mong Man Wai Building is located on the CUHK campus, and if stories are to be believed, at some point the building’s second floor was a morgue. Several students have claimed witnessing unexplainable activities on this floor, with stories ranging from the lift door opening to a blank wall on the second floor, when there is actually no provision for the lift to stop there, to seeing people pushing carts, something that you would find in a morgue. G) MUSEUM OF COASTAL DEFENCE This museum is located in Shau Kei Wan, and was used for coastal defence. It has tunnels and obscure grounds, which make it scary and frightful. The spirits of the soldiers that died in battle seem to have found refuge in this museum, and security guards have reported screams and sightings.

Featured Good luck with trying to explain the above Is there even a shred of truth in these stories or are they just figments of imagination? I guess we will never really know, unless of course we muster the courage to visit one of these so called haunted places, and check for ourselves. To that I’d say “Happy Exploring””. DELIA GROUP OF
SCHOOLS
Learning Chinese is considered as one of the major steps in helping non-Chinese speaking students to integrate in the society, continue further studies and start their career in Hong Kong. An all-rounded Chinese Language learning programme for non-Chinese students most certainly helps developing students’ competency in Chinese Language as well as understanding and appreciation towards Chinese culture. Delia Memorial School, a well established Direct Subsidy Scheme school in Hong Kong has developed a curriculum of Chinese as a Second Language specifically tailored for non-Chinese students.
Page - 20
www.adesiflava.com
Advertorial Delia Memorial School began as a small institution in Hong Kong 50 years ago. It was named after Sister Delia Tetreault, a Canadian nun from the Holy Mother Immaculate Mission, who had a dream that the wheat in a field turned into the faces of children from all over the world. How fitting it is that Delia Memorial School now serves students from over 50 nations with a wide range of backgrounds! Since its establishment in 1965, Delia Memorial School has expanded to several campuses and has become Delia Group of Schools, which consists of 5 secondary schools, 2 primary schools, 2 kindergartens, and an international school. Their enrolment has grown to over 6500 students who come from a variety of backgrounds. Delia Memorial School is devoted in developing Chinese as a Second Language curriculum for non-Chinese students in Hong Kong. Other than using regular textbooks, enhancements were made to include videos, sound effects and input of Chinese characters accordingly to the needs of the students. Lesson activities have also been made to link to the Internet, so that learning may become more interesting and motivating. Other than the Cantonese programme, a Putonghua version was also developed and offered. Putonghua has grown its popularity in an increasing rate as the needs to communicate with people in mainland China become stronger and stronger. To make learning Putonghua more interesting, multimedia becomes an essential part of the programme. Interesting topics like personal identity, family life, school life, shopping, education, and leisure are used.Students can also access the learning materials with their tablet PCs provided by Delia. Parents are encouraged to access the learning platform with their children, so that they can develop

AMENDMENT
CORRECTS IMBALANCE IN SEXUAL
HARASSMENT LAW HERE IS A HYPOTHETICAL CASE: Ms. X is a staff at a restaurant. One evening while waiting at tables, she is upset by the attentions of one male customer, Mr. Y, who repeatedly calls her “beautiful girl and drops hints at wanting to take her out for a date. She complains to her supervisor, who asks another waiter to serve that customer. Mr. Y visits the restaurant a few more times and each time propositions Ms. X, even touching her on her arm and waist even though Ms. X tells him she is not interested. Prior to Dec 2014, the above act of sexual harassment would not have been covered under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance as harassment of a customer (service recipient) by a waitress (service provider) was not included in the law. However, sexual harassment of a customer by a waitress or service provider was covered by the law and is unlawful. This imbalance was corrected by an amendment to the Sex Discrimination Ordinance that became effective on 12 December 2014. Now, sexual harassment not just by service providers but also by customers is unlawful. According to a survey carried out by the Equal Opportunities Commission from November 2013 to February 2014 among workers of service industries, including retail, catering, healthcare and nursing industries, nearly one-fifth (19%) of respondents had been sexually harassed in the last 12 months. Most frequent harassers were colleagues of the same rank (39%) and customers (28%). In a separate survey conducted by the Equal Opportunities Commission among flight attendants around the same time, it was found that 27% of the respondents had been sexually harassed in the past year and of these 59% of the harassers were men. Given this high incidence of sexual harassment among workers in the service industry by customers, the amendment to the Sex Discrimination Ordinance making such acts unlawful was imperative and most welcome.

Some frequently asked questions on the Amendment: 1
Does the amended Ordinance protect males from sexual harassment by customers? Yes, it does.
2
Online shopping has become a popular trend in recent years. Will the Ordinance apply to online trade if a salesperson or a customer service representative of an online shop is being sexually harassed by customers via emails? Similar to the case when an employee sends an obscene email to another employee in the workplace, it is unlawful for a customer to sexually harass the provider of goods via email
3
The amended Ordinance only covers the sexual harassment acts committed on the ships and aircraft registered in Hong Kong. If an employee who works on a ship or aircraft not registered in Hong Kong is sexually harassed during the stay in the Hong Kong territory, will that employee be protected by the Ordinance? If an employee who works on a ship or aircraft, which is neither registered in Hong Kong nor staying in the Hong Kong territory, is harassed, how can that employee make his/her claim? If the ship or aircraft concerned is stationed within the territory of Hong Kong, that is, within the jurisdiction of Hong Kong, then Hong Kong people working on the ship or aircraft would still be protected from sexual harassment by the Ordinance. However, when the ship/aircraft has left Hong Kong, the act of harassment could only be dealt with in accordance with the relevant laws of the jurisdiction which the ship/aircraft is registered. The victim can seek assistance from and make claims with the law enforcement bodies of the relevant jurisdiction.
4
If an employee informs his/her employer that (s)he is sexually harassed by a customer, yet the employer fails to take any reasonably practicable measures to prevent the harassment, or prevent the employee to lodge a complaint against the sexual harassment, will the employer be legally liable ? Even though the employer is not liable for the sexual harassment of employees by customers under the Amendment Ordinance, the employer may be liable for discriminating against an employee by way of victimisation if the employer prevents that employee from lodging a complaint of sexual harassment, or terminates the employment because that employee takes legal proceedings against the customer or complains against the customer, unless the allegation by the employee is false and not in good faith. The EOC believes that employers should proactively take measures to provide a safe and harassment-free work environment for their employees although this is not specified in the Amendment Ordinance. This would in fact have positive impact on both the productivity of employees and the overall efficiency of the organisations.

HIV TRANSMISSION Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is an infectious disease that attacks the immune system. The most common route of HIV transmission is hav.ing unprotected sex and sharing needles, syringes, and other injection equipment with an HIV-infected person. You are at risk of getting HIV if you do not use condoms with a partner whose HIV status is positive or unknown and share used needles with an infected drug user. Injured by a HIV-contaminated needle stick or sharp (especially for health care workers) Receiving blood transfusions, blood products, or organ/ tissue transplants that are contaminated with HIV Mother-child transmission is less common as HIV testing is now available for pregnant women. HIV can be passed from the mother to the infant during pregnancy, delivery and breastfeeding. The risk of transmission is reduced when the infected woman takes medications during pregnancy. HIV can also be spread, though uncommon nowadays, by these routes: Some body fluids – blood, semen, preseminal fluid (pre-cum), rectal fluids, vaginal fluids, and breast milk – carrying HIV from one person can transmit to others. Transmission only occurs when these body fluids come in contact with mucous membrane (such as the mouth, the rectum, genital areas, etc) or damaged tissue or are directly injected into the bloodstream. Therefore, HIV infection can take place even the person has no broken skin and no direct contact with HIV-contaminated blood. HIV is not transmitted through some other body fluids, including saliva, sweat, tears, feces, urine, vomit and nasal fluid.

Health & Wellness CAN I GET HIV FROM CAUSAL CONTACT?
No HIV cannot live long outside a body and is not spread through the air, so you will not be infected from surfaces such as: • a toilet seat and flush handle • food • drinking glasses and utensils • a door knob • a drinking fountain • a telephone
As HIV is not transmitted through some body fluids like saliva and sweat, social interactions with a HIV-infected person will not get you infected. For instance: • Having meal together • Sharing a drinking glass • Coughing and sneezing of an infected person • Shaking hands • Hugging • Social kissing

NEPAL, GOD’S Hangout Written and Photography by – Deepak Deshpande
I
have been hiking in Hong Kong for a few years now. The mountains and the landscapes here always fascinated the photographer inside me. They provoke me to hike to the places which are unexplored to pickup raw and virgin bits of nature. It is always a bit risky to hike alone, no matter how experienced hiker you are, especially on trails that are sparsely used by hikers or unmarked. The best way was to find a bunch of like minded people and hike together. The experiences and adventures shared by each one on various terrains and local cultures of the countries they have hiked are invaluable. I found the “Hong Kong Hiking Meetup” group back in 2010 and in no time realized that it was the most organized group of crazy hikers. Himalayas have always fascinated me to limits. The Indian inside of me always hit those rummy nerves as I creed to go to the places which are mentioned in most of the mythical and apocryphal Hindu scriptures. They are related to me through stories that my Grandma narrated when I was just a little.
Page - 28
It’s not easy to make arrangements if you are a lone hiker and you should be prepared for a big hole to your pocket. A trek to the Annapurna mountain ranges, Nepal, was announced on the meetup group and I grabbed the opportunity without wasting a minute. Nine of us confirmed and after a brief meeting with the group leaders who had organized the same route last year things got easy. Daniel took the initiative and contacted the hiking company in Nepal called Mountain Monarch. Flight tickets were booked, with me having a special itinerary as I planned to continue to India after the trek to meet my parents. Date of departure was decided as on 22nd Dec and we were all set for a 2 week journey through one of the most exotic places right in the heart of the mighty Himalayas, Nepal. A total trip of 12 days and 6 of which were on the trail was exciting me and the photographer inside of me was waiting to be unleashed. That afternoon of 22nd December I packed my back pack and was off to the airport post lunch. After the briefing over a cup of coffee, we
finished our checks and boarded the flight as we took off at 1745. Landed in Katmandu airport around 2330, very small venue considering thousands of hikers come here each year for expeditions and treks and most of them not being from Nepal. We were greeted at the airport by our lead Sherpa Mr. Sunil Gurung; he was the one we were going to spend most of our time with on and off the trail in Nepal. A van took us to our Hotel called Shanker. It was very warm and welcoming place amidst the dead cold night. That night we just got into the rooms, took a hot shower and crashed. An early breakfast awaited us at 7am.
Katmandu, a city, a hermitage
Woke up and went for a run, it was chilling at around 2°C. A heavy and a nice English breakfast was really something I was overjoyed to see on the table. We then left for a city tour with our city guide Ram. Pashupatinath temple was the first stop and it lies in the heart of the Katmandu city. In the name Pashupati, “pashu” means animal and “pati” means God, so he

is known as the God of the animals. If you are an Indian, you don’t have to pay any entrance fee for the temple. It was not long when we reached the bank of the Bagmati River over which the enigmatic structure of Pashupati resides. I was grogged by what I saw on the bank of Bagmati. Cremations, at least 5-6 in series, right outside the temple, people mourning for their loved ones, cold and sorrow surrounded the holy site. Caste discrimination was clearly visible, the Brahmins enjoying the elite and cleaner bank of the river while the Kshudras kept away from the vicinity of the main temple building. I had only heard of it in the past and now I was looking right upon it. We then walked around the premises of the grand Pashupati. Vatsleshwari temple was the one that grabbed my attention. The small temple is rich in erotic carvings and has flying horses on the brim of the roof indicating it was a flying temple. I then entered the Pashupatinath temple, which is only a privilege for the Hindus. There are only four such temples of the Mahadev, three of which reside in India. Next on our itinerary was the biggest stupa in Asia, the Baudhanath. The monstrous structure is a relic of the Kashya Buddha, the predecessor of Gautam. There are five colored flags surrounding the stupa representing the five elements of nature where yellow depicts fire, white is sky, blue is water, green is earth, and red is the space. There is a saying written and genuinely followed by the Buddhist around the stupa “ Thinking positive keeps you happy, happiness keeps you healthy, and good health keeps you handsome” so think positive and you will look handsome.

After enjoying some local Nepalese food we were back to the hotel and greeted by Pradeep Da, the owner of the Mountain monarch company. We were then briefed about the circuit terrain, weather conditions, clothing precautions, medical aids etc. that we should expect during our journey to the Poon hill. We were handed duffle bags, sleeping bags, down jackets and liners. That night we had a cultural program over dinner and off we went into the mythical stories of the Alien Gods. Slept early that night and ready for the big day when we would begin our trek to 3200m Poon hill summit.
A day at the Feva lake and off to the trail head
Morning we left to Pokhara, a 6 hrs drive by road. Although at a lower altitude (1100m) than Katmandu (1800m), Pokhara is cooler. The ambience of the city situated right in the valley that is surrounded by the Annapurna mountain ranges will definitely make you feel enchanted. You see the ice capped summits of the Annapurna, the holy Macchapure (Fish tail), Mt. Nilgiri, Mt. Dhaulagiri and many at one glimpse around your own self. If you are in Pokhara, Feva Lake is something you will never want to miss out on. The best place to view the lake is from the lake itself. You can hire a paddle boat to take a tour around the place. After spending the evening around the lake taking pictures and enjoying the ginger tea, we headed back for an exquisite Christmas night dinner to a Barbeque restaurant where we enjoyed some roasted pork, meat quiche, pizzas, tortillas and some
local beer (Everest). That was the last in some time that we would be relinquishing such a meal, so everyone wanted to make it count.
Nayapul- Shaoli BazaarGhandruk-KharepaniGhorepaniTadapani-Poon Hill-Nayapul
The trek began from Nayapul, a 90 mins bus ride from our hotel in Pokhara. We were 9 hikers, 1 Lead Sherpa Sunil, 3 Assistant Sherpas Yam, Diwas, Vijay, and 5 Porters who carried our duffle bags. The trail was beautiful and so were the villages round it. Six days suddenly started to sound too short to absorb the beauty of these spectacular landscapes. The sight of the villagers doing their daily chores is something that your eyes would never miss a chance to glimpse upon. Villagers carrying 25 kilos gunny bags on their backs and tied with loops on their foreheads, unguided packs of mules carrying groceries, LPG bottles and even injured hikers are some of the common sites around you. Terrace farming being a common practice in the Annapurna regions, the sight of the flat cut mountain beds is spectacular to watch. The first stopover for lunch was at Shaoli bazaar, and small village located about 7km from Naya Pool where we enjoyed the local daal bhat (lentil with rice) with some chicken curry. Post lunch was a steep climb with steps worth 690m distributed over 6kms of trail length. Passed by a pack of mules carrying groceries of 50 kilos each headed to Kharepani (15km from where we were). This evening we reached Ghandruk, a warm and cozy tea house called Trekkers Inn

welcomed us. It had now started to get chilly and the whistling of the wind God was gaining momentum, as if He was saying “Welcome to my kingdom”. The tea house was facing into the valley that we crossed from Nayapul. After dinner we took some pictures of the stars and headed to our respective rooms. Morning was really chilly, but we were still able to survive with our down jackets. The dew on the plants and the tables had transformed into snowflakes. Left Ghandruk at 9am and our next stop was Kharepani for lunch and well as a stopover. So today was a short hike of around 4 hrs would get us to the other side. The trek was easy today and the tea house called Panorama Retreat was really a treat as we see a panoramic view of the Fish tail, Annapurna south, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri and Himichuli. Our lunch consisted of daal, baked potatoes, rice and Tibetan bread. After the lunch we went on an excursion with our lead Sherpa Sunil and other Sherpas Yam, Diwas and Vijay. The climb was nasty with a lot of bushwhacking but worth the view from the top which was spectacular looking directly into the face of the titans. A hot shower cost us 100Rs now and onwards, so I had to make most of it. We placed our orders for dinner to Diwas. Dinner was nice and simple; the dining table had a heater under it and a blanket on our laps which trapped the heat inside. Next destination was Ghorepani which was going to mark our 30 km trek and we left early. It soon got warm with the sun coming up and I was sweating. Changed into hiking shorts for the first time on the trail as we moved over a long uphill climb with not much of downhill. This section of the trail was fascinating, frozen rivers and springs. Waterfalls turned into Page - 30
sharp chunks of ice daggers. I wish I could take one home for display. Lunch at Ghorepani was veggies and then we had another ascend to hit the 3215 mark until we descend back to around 2800m to reach Ghorepani. We reached by around 5pm but it was freezing in there. The room temperature was showing 0°C on my watch and outside went to -11°C. Some of our co-hikers started feeling the effects of the altitude sickness. Head ache, loss of appetite, dizziness are the common symptoms. Two caps of cognac, morning and evening kept me out of any discomfort. The common room had a very nice central fireplace and an old lady kept supplying coal to keep the heat going. That night we slept early and we had an early wake up call next day around 5am to go up to the Poon Hill to see the sun rise. This is what we came all the way for and it was tomorrow. We left at 0530 next morning and hit the Poon Hill which is around 400m from our lodge by around 0630. When I saw the sun rise, I knew it was all worth walking for the past 4 days, over 16 hrs walking, 50 km trekking to come here and see what I was looking at. Surrounded by the mighty Himalayas on all the four sides, with the snow capped giants like Annapurna 1-3, Annapurna South, Machapuchre, Mount Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri bowing down to the big Lord. We then descended back to the lodge and after breakfast we started our way back towards Nayapul and we had to now descend over a 1000m down from Ulleri to reach Birethanti. This was where we spent our last i.e. 4th night, fairly warm as we were back into the comfortable altitude zone and things were getting back to normal. Ears popped out, no more low pressure around us and the cold was much bearable now. This was where we also tipped our Porters who did a great job and the Sherpas which took
good care of us on the trails. Next morning was only a 2 hrs walk back to Naya Pul where we started from and then back to Pokhara. A twitter plane dropped us from Pokhara to Katmandu the next day. I was going to fly into Mumbai to visit my parents while the rest of the group would leave for Hong Kong. We took leave from Sunil and other Sherpas with a promise, a Promise to come back for the Everest base camp next season. My first encounter with the Titans of the North and do I believe in love at first sight? NO! I need to come back … to the kingdom of the Gods…. to the kingdom of peace. AUNTY MVP– APRIL 2015 Hello friends, our favorite Aunty MVP is back

Share your love and relationship problems with her, she knows it all.. Aunty Poonam Mehta, HK’s well-known Counsellor & our Columnist for Love & Relationships section. — M. Ed. Guidance & Counseling, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne U K and Early Years Registered Educator in Hong Kong
1. Hello Aunty, I’m Rachana (name changed) and living in Tsim Sha Tsui. My husband really loves me and the kids a lot but hardly gives us any time. Despite of being so busy with his business and not being able to give time for family, he manages to go out with his friends for overnight parties once in every week. When I ask him, why he has time for his friends when he doesn’t have enough time for his family? He says that with friends he can be himself and can get mental relaxation which is very necessary for him. Aunty please suggest something by which my husband gives more time at home and spends more time with me and the kids rather than spending lots of money and the entire night doing god-knows-what with his friends.
Answer 1 Dear Rachana, It appears you are longing to spend quality time as a Page - 36
family and you very concerned about your husband spending long hours outside. Please count your blessings, that your husband can express his view openly. Everyone needs space. He is right in his own way so are you. If your spouse is not a drinker or a gambler, then be grateful. Build your own self-esteem so that you are not overly dependent on your husband’s attention. Simple solution is not to question him but make him aware of your feelings. Make a plan with him. Surprise him by taking him for dinner just both of you, enjoy your evening, casually bring the topic of spending Sundays with kids to parks or an outing to the place of interest. Maybe you need to build some friendships together as well. Getting together with other couples is a very enjoyable and healthy thing to do. Invite some close couples for dinner. I hope this is helpful for you.

Love & Relationship
2. Hi, I’m Nobel a Pilipino girl in a relationship with an Indian Guy by the name of Rakesh. Aunty I got this magazine in one of the Indian restaurants in Central and really liked reading your column. Aunty, my boyfriend Rakesh is already married and is having 2 kids and wife back home in India. He wants to keep our relationship in the same way and also at the same time he wants to continue with his relationship with his family in India. I have no issues in being his second wife and also having a family with him in Hong Kong, but the problem is that he does not want to do a legal marriage with me and just wants to keep it the way it is now. Can you please suggest something? Also I would like to have your contact details for some counseling for my relationship issues with my boyfriend. Thank you so much Aunty.
Answer 2
Poonam Mehta Ji, I’m Radhika (name changed) from Tung Chung. I am living a perfect life, with 2 kids, husband and myself. We go on holidays, spend most of the time together and somehow myself and my husband we like being at home and spending time together with our kids and each other. Career and Finance wise also we are very well settled and happy. Despite of having everything, I sometimes get in to depression and also have very bad dreams at night time. Is it because I am comparing my life with others who are having problems and the fear of something similar happening with me is the cause of my depression? Since I am on facebook most of the time, I somehow come across posts, shares and things which are related to several issues with husbands, families etc…and somehow after reading these posts on facebook, my mind starts framing the same issues with me and my family.
Dear Nobel,
Answer 3.
First, of all thank you for taking interest in the column. I understand your insecurity of not having any legal bonding with your friend. Even if he marries you it is Bigamy. Lawfully he cannot marry you. According to section 20(1) of the Matrimonial Clause Ordinance (MCO), Cap. 179 , when at the time of marriage either party has already been lawfully married, the said marriage is void. For example, if a person marries a second time without first completing the formal steps of divorce for his/her first marriage, then his/her second marriage is nullified. Besides, do you realize that, your friend is with you for physical attraction, nothing beyond. Furthermore, please be aware that you will be ruining a happy settled life, because of your selfish desire. Please move on with your life, find someone who would love you as a true friend. As for my contact details please write Desi flava magazine. 3. Hi Adesiflava magazine, you guys are doing a great job with this magazine in Hong Kong and I will you even more success with every new issue that comes out. I have a question for Aunty MVP. Aunty
www.adesiflava.com
Dear Radhika, I am glad that my column inspires you. You are a blessed soul, who is grateful and happy for what you have. That is great!! But your fear of loosing what you have is causing depression and anxiety. Sometimes we are overwhelmed by a negative exaggeration of our own worth, which, when the cloud lifts, makes us wonder how we ever allowed such thoughts to dominate. We all have the ability to think well of ourselves but sometimes it needs a ‘key’ of understanding to actually switch our thinking from automatic negative thoughts (ANTS) to something more positive. Set a goal of always appreciating good things in your life. Make it a practice, when bad thoughts disturb you switch it off. Believe that you alone are master of your own thoughts and train yourself not to yield to negative thinking. It is your choice which mindset you allow to dominate your thinking. Gradually, the momentum of denying your negativities, forcibly if necessary, will bring you back to a better sense of worth..

Horoscope
ASTROLOGY BY BEJAN DARUWALLA FOR APRIL ARIES: Ganesha says you have been involved, till now, in seriously and conservatively building your family’s nest-egg. You have been a responsible child/parent/spouse/friend/employee and have won kudos for your cool, caring and calm nature. Now, at this phase, you could feel an upsurge of emotional energy which could cause restlessness and loneliness. You may indulge in disruptive and decadent behavior and shock your loved ones. Taurus:- Your reckless behavior is under control as you knuckle down to the sedate job of making a living and creating wealth. You are interested right now in fulfilling your professional and personal obligations. You determinedly slog away at your routine chores, commitments. There could be some problems at work which you will have to resolve, and accusations from the home front of being a workaholic could cause added stress. It will be a good idea to find a balance.
focus has shifted from work to home and this requires detailed planning. All issues related to the home are highlighted: from restorations/renovations/additions to investments in property, land, leases and loans. There will be very intense bonding and you spend memorable moments in the company of loved ones.
GEMINI:- You natural inclination is towards spirituality and you involve yourself in studying the scriptures/visiting holy and sacred shrines/meditation/chanting. Finances continue to occupy your attention but Ganesha advises you to stay alert in all money matters. This is the right time for parking your money in safe and stable investments and not risking or squandering it away in get-rich-quick schemes.
SAGITTARIUS:- You have continued to work hard and diligently even in the midst of all the interpersonal drama in your private life, winning approval with your superiors. Your reputation will soar. Prestige, promotions and pelf are the results of your own hard work and dedication and you deserve it. As your self-esteem and self-confidence, along with your social standing, soar you manage to, thankfully, retain your helpful and gracious attitude with all and sundry irrespective of their status in life.
CANCER:- You are on a high as you involve the 3Cscommunication, contacts and correspondence – to take your career/business up the next rung of success. Your stupendous inter-personal skills attract attention and just dividends. You could be tempted to venture into risky territory; the indications are all there and you will have to control yourself. Ganesha advises caution in money matters, love affairs and in over-indulgence. Bold declarations and dynamic gestures of love are possible. LEO:- Money matters continue to demand attention. But along with that, friends/loved ones/extended family demand your attention and you do not hold back as you respond. You overextend yourself to bring peace and humanity in all your relationships, both professional and personal, and the results are spectacular. Ganesha blesses you with happy bonding. You have pleasurable moments with your lover and, if a parent, great times with your kids. There will also be happy occasions with siblings/parents/in-laws and extended family. VIRGO:- You have an inherent edge in communicating with people and so any relationship issues with children/family elders/ siblings can be sorted out by talking. Friends are the source of fun and frolic and you will enjoy partying virtually all week long. You manage to give equal and quality time to both your career and your children. Spirituality and religious matters also interest you. The money position is strong and Ganesha is pleased. LIBRA:- The trend of the past few weeks continues and you put in dedicated efforts in all your projects and initiatives. The
Page - 38
SCORPIO:- The 3 Cs – contacts, communications and correspondence – are this week’s theme and so there will be a flurry of letters, emails, SMS as well as travel and trips. You will be in touch with the world and there will be many new work projects. A personal situation/work issue could put you in a dilemma but you manage to come through unstuck with some deft maneuvering. There is a good chance to meet up with extended family and friends in religious functions/family gettogethers/celebrations.
CAPRICORN:- You are now determined to put in your all towards building your dreams which includes both your career path and the lifestyle you aspire to. You have received rewards for your efforts, but now breaking the status quo and pushing ahead calls for some risky moves. There may have been hindrances before but now you want it all. So you equip yourself physically and mentally through determined and disciplined efforts/research/ studies, ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking and a ‘can-do’ attitude. AQUARIUS:- The trend that began in the full moon phase continues and you put in superhuman efforts at work. You are a rock star and your achievements are in the spotlight but you don’t allow it to distract you from the larger vision. There are obstacles and potholes ahead but you have the stamina to move ahead. You may step on a few toes in the process but you also manage to quell any untoward incident and defuse a difficult situation before it blows up. Rewards, returns and revenues – these 3 R’s – are the result. PISCES:- You learn to let go a bit at work this week but continue to get amazing results from your associations and connections. Supportive and co-operative ties with your colleagues and workmates will energise you. The domestic situation will also require your intense dedication and focus and so you are occupied on all fronts. Children/pets/dependents/older relatives could also take your time once again this week, too but you are generous with yourself and they love it. You gain love and affection and are filled with goodwill.

Horoscope
ASTROLOGY BY BEJAN DARUWALLA FOR MAY ARIES: Ganesha says you strike out boldly in and out to achieve. In your case, “Well begun is half done,” may easily apply to love, sudden gains or windfalls or money from home, new ventures, business collaborations and fresh new proposals. It may also manifest itself in terms of intensive research and/or intense creativity, or both. You may easily excel at what you take on now. TAURUS:- There is tremendous gain in both joy and material benefits. This comes about through the fusion of performance and passion. You will develop an ancillary line of business, get a promotion or additional perks, and arrange loans and joint-finance. If in a position to do so, some hiring and firing will keep you busy. The emphasis is on subordinates and pets. GEMINI:- Tough going may be in store for you. There is a strong likelihood of opposition to plans, things not going the way you want them to, stumbling blocks and hurdles to overcome. Health wise, it is also not a very good time and some precautions and care will have to be exercised. A kind of melancholia or depression may beset you but will ease later in the month. Doubts and despair may cloud your judgment, so weigh up options and decisions carefully before implementing them. I would suggest you offer them, and yourself, at the feet of Ganesha, the remover of difficulties. CANCER:- Funds, joint-finance, loans will materialize, insurance, taxes, pension and retirement benefits, legacies, lotteries may go a long way to sounding the tinkle in the coffers that is music to everyone’s ears. This can really turn out to be the month for opportunities. LEO:- The week is truly for planning and pleasure – the 2 P’s, new and different to the ones I usually talk/write about. Another strong trend will be the dual one of rising expenses but the counter balancing one of an upsurge of joy – a chance to be happy and to make a loved one happy (this does not necessarily imply a lover or sweetheart). You will also travel, and take either short or long trips. VIRGO:- A mighty strange month. It is a foregone conclusion that you will encounter stiff opposition, if not pitched battles, to get your way, but your ambition and drive will have acquired a cutting edge, so upsets and collisions are part of the game. Parents, in-laws, even partners/colleagues or your spouse will cause you anxiety regarding their health. Both good and bad for you from Ganesha’s bounty. LIBRA:- One of the best months for Librans. A slice of luck, with all sincerity, is what I’m referring to. Gains, socialising, a possible wish-fulfillment are very likely. Equally satisfying and rewarding will be family bonds,
www.adesiflava.com
prayer, meditation and the wise counsel of well wishers. You will be truly blessed, says Ganesha. SCORPIO:- Expenses will go right through the ceiling this month, but equally spiralling will be your confidence in your ability to cope so that things will not get you down. Achievements come to those of you who have the right mindset, and that you definitely do. Surreptitious activities, secret deals, something cooking which will not be inimical to you! Liaisons, ties and partnerships and meets and meetings are all foretold. SAGITTARIUS:- You are like Jack the giant-killer this month, making strides ahead in your seven-league boots. There is so much on your plate that you don’t know how and where to start. Personal interests, home and family are strongly emphasized but so, too, are professional pursuits and business interests. Both equally important, and equally absorbing. CAPRICORN:- Gain and more gain is the theme for this month. Let me spell it out, with the blessings and inspiration of Ganesha. It takes the form of – a). Family bonding, smoothness or warmth in relationships, joy in bonding and interaction. b). Financial benefits, sudden gains, easy money (I wonder if you feel it’s a good time to buy a lottery ticket), income from sources other than work, maybe a legacy or a twin at the pools. AQUARIUS AND PISCES:- Actually, both these months should be taken together as the trend is definitely for both as a whole. To put it another way, what starts now finds its culmination, apogee or climax in December, This may include: a) Buying/selling/shopping/leasing/renting/acquiring – will definitely focus more than strongly on house/home/ office/shop. b) Renovation, decoration, re-doing refurbishing. c) Those dealing in property, land, or real estate will, naturally, prosper. d) Peace and comfort prevail on the home front – BUT, e) Unfortunately there may be loss, natural or forced separation or a parting with a loved one, someone who is both dear and close to you. Ganesha says, you can have no pleasure without pain.
