Dear Readers,
W
ith this month’s issue, Adesiflava Magazine celebrates its 2nd anniversary. With the blessings of our parents and Lord Ganesha, I’m proud to say we’ve managed to grow bigger and better with every issue of Adesiflava over the past two years. It has helped us branch out to new business endeavours: our first restaurant in HK and conducting several public events. We would like to thank each one of you, who contributed, read our magazine and supported us through advertising. From the bottom of our hearts, A BIG THANKS TO ALL OF YOU! To all our readers: we will continue to stay true to our tagline, which is To ENLIGHTEN, ENTERTAIN & ENGAGE. In this issue, you’ll find a special article about Ganeshotsav, a popular festival celebrated in India in recognition of Lord Ganesha. It contains a quick look at some of the most popular Ganeshotsav attractions in and around the city of Aamchi Mumbai – check it out in our Festive Mood section. You’ll also find an article comparing the cost of living in Hong Kong with other major cities across the globe. Since it came about due to a friend’s enquiry on Hong Kong’s cost of living, I’m going to gift this article to her. I used to think that Hong Kong is the most expensive place to live in, but some of the stats we unravelled completely changed my perspective. Don’t miss reading this article at any cost. In our new section ‘ANALYSIS’ we follow our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi and see how he’s diligently shaping a new image of India for foreign eyes. We’re excited about the change he’s working towards and the promise of new India under his unique leadership. In ‘GIVING TO OTHERS’ section, we tell you about the fascinating story of Poonam Mehta who is shaping the lives of 35 kids from different socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. Aunty Poonam is helping the kids to shape-up and grow like superstars and learn some basic and most important things of life. Read all about how Aunty Poonam’s 70th birthday was celebrated by these kids that she’s helping. We salute her efforts!
I wanted to share an incident that recently happened with me and Gaurav. After we finished our meal at the Pizza Hut in Tsim Sha Tsui, we moved out of the outlet and took the elevator going down. To our horror, we found ourselves stuck in the elevator, and no amount of frantic button pressing or shouting would help. After about five minutes, we could hear the security guard saying something that we couldn’t understand (because it was in Chinese). I was losing my breath; Gaurav was also getting very nervous, as we had spent over 10 min. inside the stuck elevator by now. We were completely helpless as phone networks were also weak inside. With considerable effort, we finally managed to call 999 and inform them about our condition. Immediately, the fire department and an ambulance were at the scene under five minutes. In no time we both got pulled out by fire-fighters, and were treated by the standby medicare personnel with some first-aid. Needless to say I was super impressed with the first responders. With the help of Suraj Samtani we managed to interview HK Fire Services Dept to try and understand how their team maintains their performance and efficiency of over 90% every time. Did you know that the largest ever festival of Indian culture and heritage was inaugurated and held in Shanghai & Beijing recently? Wow! Great news indeed. Anything that helps our two great nations come closer to understanding each other is welcome, and read all about it our BUZZ section. ADF couldn’t be complete without Bauhinia’s view, Aunty Poonam’s Love & Relationships, Bollywood Gossip and more. Packed with this lovely issue of Adesiflava, are two Diwali Gifts for all the readers: free food coupons from Aamchi Mumbai and complimentary passes to our upcoming Navratri Event. We look forward to joining us there! Wish you all a very Happy Diwali and prosperous New Year from the entire team of Adesiflava. — Neha G.Pathak

in the festive mood
Ganpati Bappa Morya! Ganeshotsav 2014 is probably the largest festival celebrated in the country after Diwali. Here’s how the 11 day long festival is witnessed through the streets of Mumbai, with a look at also some of the most popular Ganeshotsav attractions in maximum city
E
very year, since Lokmanya Tilak gave his clarion call to people to observe and celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi as a festival in 1893, the tradition of Ganeshotsav (Ganesha festival) has been observed in full swing for over 120 years. And it continues to go strong. The Indian state of Maharashtra, home to eight special pilgrimage spots dedicated to the Elephant-headed God Ganesha, is pretty much the epicentre of the 11 day festival that resonates to all parts of India – from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, from Gandhinagar to Itanagar. The festival takes place between either August or September every year. Why? Because according to Hindu mythology, Ganesha is bestowed the honour of being first

among all other gods. First to be worshipped, whenever there’s a special offering for gods, according to customs and traditions. Ganesha is also heralded as the remover of obstacles, and the supreme god of wisdom, among all things, and receiving his blessings before starting any new enterprise or act is considered sacrosanct among practicing Hindus all over the world, not just in India. That’s why the celebration and festival of Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganeshotsav assumes so much importance into the Hindu psyche. During the festival days, sculpted images of Ganesh are put up in colorfully decorated mandals (pavilions) which depict religious themes, current events, or other themes relating to social awareness. There are large public displays of
images of Ganesh with aarti (light rituals), loud religious music, and dancing by devotees.
Mumbai’s biggest Ganeshotsav attractions The people of Mumbai have always celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi with all enthusiasm and joy for more than hundred years now and this festival is nothing less than Diwali especially for Mumbaikars that celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in grand style. Although the kind of competition and business concept that have been merged with the festival because of the commercialization of Ganesh Chaturthi is a sad trend,, but that does not stop devotees to visit some of the must visit Ganesh mandals in Mumbai that draw large number
in the festive mood
The myth and legend of Ganesha • The biggest Ganesha idol is located in Vishakhapatnam and measures more than 70 feet tall. • Modak is believed to be a favourite of Lord Ganesha and is especially prepared during the festival. Literally, it refers to something that brings joy. • Lord Ganesha is also refered as “Vigana Harta” (the remover of obstacles) and “Buddhi Pradaayaka” (the giver of wisdom and intellect). In fact, there are around 108 names of Lord Ganesha, but Ganesha and Ganpati are more common. • Ganesha Chaturthi is also the day when Lord Shiva declared Ganesha to be above all Hindu Gods, excluding Vishnu Lakshmi, Shiva and Parvati. • Lord Ganesha is sometimes represented with only one tusk. This form of Lord Ganesha is known as Ek Dant. There are many myths about the missing tooth of Ganesha. The most common is the story about the tooth being lost as it was hurled at the moon who had offended Ganesha by mocking him. • It is considered unlucky to look at the Moon during Ganesha Chaturthi. According to Hindu mythology, once while returning from a feast,
of people from all over Mumbai and also from Maharashtra. Here’s a quick look at some of the most popular Ganeshotsav attractions in and around the city of Mumbai.
The Lalbaugcha Raja Do I even have to introduce you to the most famous Ganesh idol in the city? Well, Mumbaikars already love their Lalbaugcha Raja (King of Lalbaug), so probably they know better than me, but for some of my readers let me share a few things. Established in 1934 this mandal (Ganesh group) managed to gain more popularity in 1990s and have managed to attract more number of people and devotees than any other mandal in the city. You won’t believe that almost every day a million people come to visit this mandal (idol) believing that Ganpati Bappa will fulfill their wishes. The mandal is located at G.D. Ambedkar Road in
Ganesha riding atop his mouse, was accosted by a snake. On seeing the snake, the petrified mouse dropped Lord Ganesha on the ground. Because of the impact of the fall, the belly of Lord Ganesha burst open and the food he had at the feast spilled out. Ganesha gathered all the fallen ladoos and modaks and stuffed them back in his belly, using the snake to hold his belly together. Chandra (Moon) who was watching everything burst out laughing. This enraged Ganesha and he broke his tooth and hurled it at the Moon, cursing him to never be able to shine again. Later, the Moon sought forgiveness and the curse was undone. But the myth about looking at the moon as a bad luck omen still prevails. • Though many believe Ganesha to be a bachelor, there are numerous instances where Ganesha is represented with two wives-Ridhi and Sidhi. Both of them were created by Brahma to placate Ganesha who was distraught at not having any wife when several Gods and deities had more than one. While Ridhi stands for wealth and prosperity, Sidhi symbolises intellect and wisdom. It is believed that anyone who worships Lord Ganesha also invokes the blessings of his wives.
Lalbaug and you can get down at Lower Parel, Curry Road or Chinchpokli stations to get here. The visiting hours are open around the clock, but your waiting time can be anything from five hours to twenty hours depends on your luck factor and the amount devotees in the line at that time.
Ganesh Galli Mumbaicha Raja Well, the competition is always tough and just couples of lanes away you can find Ganesh Galli Mumbaicha Raja (King of Mumbai) which still many believe is the most popular Ganesh mandal in Mumbai throughout the history of Ganesh mandals. Why? Well, it started way before The Lalbaugcha Raja (King of Lalbaug) was established and it managed to attract devotees and people for more than six decades until The Lalbaugcha Raja manage to garner better response. Established in 1928 this is also the oldest
Ganesh mandal (group) in the locality which was originally formed for the benefit of mill workers. The Ganesh mandal is located in Ganesh Galli in Lalbaug and you can get down at either Lower Parel, Curry Road or Chinchpokli stations to get here. While the pandal (visiting area) is always busy and crowded it will take you an hour or so to take the darshan (glimpse) of Lord Ganesha’s idol inside.
12th Lane Khetwadi Ganesh Idol Spectacular is the right word to describe Khetwadicha Ganraj that leaves you spellbound when you enter the pandal (set-up area). Established in 1959 Khetwadicha Ganraj never achieved the popularity that they have managed to get recently in the last few decades. It was only during early 2000s that the mandal (group) dared to come up with the tallest Ganesh idol

ever of 40 feet that dwarfed all others that year. You can see the grand decoration and set up in the picture below which is a replica of a palace interior. Since then Khetwadicha Ganraj has managed to attract large number of people annually getting the kind of popularity it deserved. The mandal is open to people till late night so you can visit it any time you want. You can get down at Grant Road or Sandhurst Road which are the nearest stations and the pandal is located in the 12th Lane of Khetwadi. Oh, when you are here, do visit other Khetwadi lanes as well that also bring up smaller Ganesh idols. Khetwadi has in all 14 lanes, so you get to see lot of idols here, both
I believe respecting the nature is as good as respecting your God and that is why GSB Seva Ganesh mandal is the most popular mandal (group) for those who think differently. Established in 1952 and started by Gowd Saraswat Brahmin community of Karnataka this Ganesh idol is something that you should not miss out especially when you are on the tour of top Ganesh mandals in Mumbai. So, what makes this Ganesh idol stand apart? Well, its eco-friendly and made out of clay plus it is adorned with real gold. It is believed that this idol is adorned with 60 kilograms of gold. I am not trying to put someone down here, but GSB Seva Ganesh mandal do not play any recorded songs in regional languages that we usually here playing out loud on the streets. Instead, the mandal (group) plays traditional Indian music instruments which are usually played in South Indian temples. Finally, a group that still sticks to the basics and does not give in to the concept of money.
Andhericha Raja In the last few years, a major part of the city’s population has moved to suburbs and therefore the Andhericha Raja (King of Andheri) has managed to gain more popularity especially for
Ganeshotsav in numbers
• 15,000 common Ganesha mandals in and around the city of Mumbai • 2-3 lakh Ganesha idols installed by individual households and cooperative societies • Around 40,000 Ganesha idols exported to various countries for people to observe the over week long festival • Close to 10,000 idols have been shipped to nearby states and cities like Gujarat, Goa, Hyderabad, Delhi, and more
the people living close to Andheri. The mandal was established in 1966 by mill and factory workers who moved to suburbs from Lalbaug. In simple words, Andhericha Raja is the sort of Lalbaugcha Raja for people that live in this part of Mumbai. However, don’t expect glitz and glamour here and you will also miss out the tall statues here because Andhericha Raja is not about competition, but about respect and devotion and people come here because they believe that Lord Ganesha will fulfill their wishes and get rid of their problems. The mandal is located at Veera Desai Road, Azad Nagar in Andheri West. To reach the mandal get down at Andheri station and take a bus or rickshaw to Veera Desai Road, Azad Nagar. — by Ameya Pathak

Mumbai
By and large travel in Hong Kong tends to be cheap and affordable. Taxi fares are particularly affordable, compared to places like London or New York. A local bus in Hong Kong would typically cost $2.82 as would MTR for 2 persons. A peak tram in Hong Kong would cost $7.69.
Fairly expensive. Intercity transportation would cost $30+ while a taxi from the airport to the main city would cost $25+.
It is not for nothing that London is considered one of the most expensive cities in the world! A taxi from Heathrow to city centre can set you back by anywhere from $75 to $100. The tube is a much more viable option where the same ride would cost anywhere between $5 to $8+. The refundable Oyster card for $8.33 is a great alternative too.
Travel in Mumbai is cheap, on a regular black and yellow taxi, $15 - $18 would be sufficient to take you from one end of the city to another. Private taxis are more expensive. Auto-rickshaws (or tuktuks) start at 25 cents minimum fare and only run in the suburbs. Train travel on the suburban railway network (commonly called local) is most common and advisable; a first class tourist ticket usable on all lines all day would cost $2.6.
Affordable for local Cantonese language schools; prohibitively expensive for English language education at private schools. Indicative costs as high as $1100 a month.
Foreigners pay more for education as is the norm in places round the world. For instance, medicine studies at NUS (National University of Singapore) would cost $37,000+.
Tuition fees in international schools in London can go up to $16,500+ per term. Yet, London also offers students ample opportunities to “earn while they learn”.
Private schools (as opposed to government schools which could even be free but very poor quality) are getting increasingly expensive in Mumbai; even at the pre-school level, you might have to spend upwards of $11,000 on fees, which only get higher as your child progresses through school.
Food in Hong Kong remains fairly affordable. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant would cost you less than $6 while a Combo Meal at McDonald’s would cost less than $4. Beer, both local and imported, would also cost you less than $4.
Plenty of hawkers across Singapore make street food extremely inexpensive yet tasty! Beer starts from $4. A Big Mac costs about $3.5.
A reasonable meal in the business district would cost $23 while a combo meal in a fast food joint would cost just $9. Basic dinner for two at a neighborhood pub would be costlier at $51 though.
Food in Mumbai can be unbelievably cheap, depending on where you eat (high end restaurants can be quite expensive though, even by western standards!). A budget meal at most places would cost less than $5. A big Maharaja Mac chicken burger (equivalent of the Big Mac) at McDonald’s costs just about $1.5, one of the cheapest in the world!
A basic one bedroom apartment in the city centre would cost you $2,500 to rent. Buying one in the same area would cost you nearly $15,000 per square meter.
Location can make a big difference to housing costs in Mumbai. Renting a 1 bedroom apartment in the city centre would cost upwards of $500 while buying one would cost nearly $5,000 per square meter in the same location.
Owning a car in London is quite expensive. Firstly, cars are expensive to buy, including those that are considered cheap in other parts of the world. Add to that exorbitant parking fees and congestion charges, so you will end up spending a pretty penny. Using public transport as far as possible is always advisable.
You can expect a car in the range of the Volkswagen Golf to cost about $13,000 in Mumbai. Luxury cars in India tend to cost more than overseas due to high taxes, duties, etc.
When it comes to clothing options, London scores well for cheap choices - consider stores like Topshop, Primark, New Look, Forever 21, and TK Maxx for great bargains!
Clothing is cheap in Mumbai, especially for unbranded stuff which is available in plenty. Among the branded offerings, a pair of Levis should cost close to $40.
Housing unfortunately is one of the most expensive aspects of living in Hong Kong, especially for expats, where median prices can touch more than half a million US dollars!
One of the biggest costs of living in Singapore, the cheapest option would be renting a shared flat at $400 a month. If you can afford, renting a house would cost upwards of $6,000 to start with. Considerably expensive than the US Owning cars is a prohibitively because of taxes. Hot sellers like the expensive proposition in Singapore. Mercedes E-Class cost upwards of After all costs and charges, an Audi $64,000. Numerous add-ons to the A4 could cost you $182,000 while a cost of a car include vehicle license BMW 328 would cost $238,000. costs, hefty parking fees, fuel expenses, and insurance to the extent that over a 5 year period, even a second hand Toyota Corolla can end up costing you upwards of $80,000. While high end retail is just as Clothing is where Singapore provides expensive as in places like London some respite! Places like Bugis or Paris, there is plenty of cheap Street and Far East Plaza offer great clothing on offer in Hong Kong, deals on clothes. which can cost as little as $2.5 to start with. For women’s clothing try the Cheung Sha Wan Road in Sham Shui Po which locals refer to as “Fashion Street”.

Comparing Cost of Living in Hong Kong
H
ong Kong has always been well known (infamous perhaps?!) for its high cost of living, to the extent that for many expats (in particular), it consistently ranks as one of the most expensive places to relocate, according to numerous studies.
14 | www.adesiflava.com
At A-Desi Flava we wanted to put this commonly held notion to test. Accordingly, we went ahead and compared cost of living in Hong Kong to various other places round the world which are also well known for their high cost of living – along various parameters. Our findings are summarized
feature
New York
Thailand
Indonesia
Taxis in the Big Apple start at $2.50. Buses and subways cost the same - $2.25. Driving in the city is not advisable, especially for newcomers, with traffic, congestion, parking fees being some reasons.
Traveling across Thailand is a convenient and cheap proposition with ample choices for doing so, including by air - competition has meant that airfares tend to be low as well. Once inside Thailand, you will find taxis relatively commonly, especially in Bangkok and other tourist hubs. They start at a little over a dollar as the minimum fare. Trains and buses are cheap as well. International schools in Thailand are rather expensive where fees can range anywhere between $10,000 to $20,000 per annum and sometimes even more!
Given the country’s geography as Local transport would cost $28+ an archipelago, traveling between while intercity transport would cost islands would often involve air travel $100+. which can be expensive - a flight from Sumatra to Flores could cost $300! Yet, within an island, inland travel by bus can be quite cheap - as little as $1.40!
Taxi from airport to city center in Beijing would cost between $11 and $20. Airport express train to city center is just about $4. The subway is really cheap at $0.33.
Education costs in Indonesia vary by region, with Jakarta the most expensive, especially for international schools. Tuition fees vary considerably from institution to institution, so providing a specific figure may not be feasible.
Education in Beijing is becoming an increasingly expensive proposition, especially in international schools which can cost anywhere between $20,000 to $35,000 for senior year of high school.
When it comes to education in New York City, a lot depends on the institution. For instance, the annual tuition and fees at New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts is $31,250 at the time of writing this piece. That said, taking a child right through all the various stages of education in New York City can end up costing $1 million eventually! While the general reputation of New York is that of an expensive city, food can be cheap depending on where you eat. Generally, there are a number of budget options across the city where you can easily have all 3 meals of the day for less than $10 each. Median home values in New York are about $525,000 currently. Rent for a one bedroom apartment in the city centre would be $2,800+.
On an average a new car costs about $30,000 in New York City. Remember there are many add-ons which bump up costs, especially parking costs which are very high in the city. There are also many tolls you need to keep in mind. If you are new, use public transport as much as you can.

By and large, food in Thailand is cheap, especially street food (which is also mostly very good quality!) that can be as less as $2. However, hotels and restaurants serving nonThai food do tend to be expensive, maybe ten times as much as street food. A Combo Meal at McDonalds would cost $5. Housing costs vary by area with Bangkok typically the most expensive. On an average, a decent apartment should cost you $300 to $500 a month to rent, though there can be significant variations. Cars, whether new or used, tend to cost a lot in Thailand. For many models, especially European or American brands, you would likely end up paying more than you would back home.

conclusion
So in conclusion, as you can see – and as common knowledge goes, Mumbai (and India as a whole) does score very well on the affordability scale. Yet, as may have been a bit of a surprise for you, destinations traditionally considered pricy such as New York or London, can also offer some bargains, at least on the clothing front!

India & The World:
Dawn of a new era Putting a bold new foot forward to wow the world audience and countrymen alike, the Modi-led government at the centre is helping shape a new image of the country for foreign eyes
A
fter May 2014, and Modi’s swearing in as India’s latest Prime Minister, a lot has changed in the country. Apart from a renewed sense of optimism and enthusiasm for the masses, there seems to be a drastic shift in India’s foreign policy. Not restricted to paltry tokenism and symbolism, the new government at the centre is trying to repair relations with its neighbours, uphold the country’s dignity and respect, uphold age-old tenets of India’s “guest
16 | www.adesiflava.com
is god” philosophy, and fighting hard for Indian’s at the global stage – which is nice to see for a change. Here’s some of the highlights of what we feel is India’s new foreign policy:
Behaving like good neighbours In one bold stroke of statesmanship, Prime Minister designate Mr. Narendra Damodar Modi had raised India’s stature not only in South Asia, but all over the world by doing a very simple – and a first of its kind – thing. He invited the heads of state of all India’s neighbourly nations, particularly pertaining to the South Asian region. India invited Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and leaders from six other neighbouring nations to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi in an unparalleled and symbolically loaded step dictated by the Prime Ministerdesignate. By extending this invitation, Mr. Modi has shown not only that he has his clear
priorities, often out of the bureaucratic box, but also that in foreign policy he is more likely to follow Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee’s style of making the policy announcement first and leaving it to the bureaucracy to implement it. Even the American were impressed by Modi’s political acumen. US Secretary of State John Kerry has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for inviting his Pakistan counterpart Nawaz Sharif for his swearing-in ceremony which he described as the first step towards improving relations between the two neighbours. “Prime Minister Modi took the important first step of inviting Nawaz Sharif to his inauguration. Both men are business-minded leaders who want to create opportunity for their people,” Kerry told a Washington-audience at an event organised by the Centre for American Progress (CAP), a US think-tank. “I talked to Nawaz Sharif after his visit there. He was very encouraged, thought it was positive, possibilities he understood. So improved trade is a win-win for both countries and both peoples,” he said.

From automobiles to agro value addition “Come, Make in India”, paper or plastic, “Come, Make in India”, satellite or submarine “Come, Make in India”. BRICS Summit Immediately after the FIFA World Cup final, Narendra Modi flew to Brazil for his big summit at the world stage, under the BRICS initiative. And what is widely being hailed as a major victory for India at the international forum for emerging economies, the BRICS Summit agreed to establish a brand new development bank, a requirement tabled by India for a while now. The bank will be started with an initial size of 100 billion dollars for which the initial subscribed capital will be equally shared by the founding members. The bank will have an initial authorised capital of USD 100 billion. The initial subscribed capital shall be of USD 50 billion to be equally shared by the founding-members. Also, India is going to enjoy a leadership role for the newly formed bank which will be headquartered in Shanghai. While some see the formation of the NDB as a victory for India, especially after it managed
to ensure that all the countries share the equity equally, fears remain that China, given its immense financial clout and the skewed trade balance ratio, especially with the US, may try to use the bank as a potent arm in the high-stake, high-risk game it is playing to beat the US at its own game. For India, the challenge to ensure that the new bank`s resources are used for its intended purpose would be daunting given the obvious keenness in New Delhi to not upset the good relationship India has forged with the West in the recent past. How Narendra Modi and his cabinet utilizes the funds loaned by the BRICS bank to deliver on his promise of ‘ache din’ (good days) to the electorate that voted him into power remains to be seen.
World Trade Organization Stand The agricultural sector is India’s most vulnerable sector. With the livelihood of around 650 million
people in the country being dependent on agriculture, India’s interests in the negotiations on agriculture are mainly defensive. India’s offensive interests lie in reducing the heavy subsidisation in developed countries. Keeping its agrarian crisis in view, India had made a strong pitch for according adequate tariff protection to certain products by designating them special products. The products within agriculture regarding which India is extra sensitive with respect to trade liberalisation -- due to their potential for huge employment-generation and livelihood concerns -- include cereals, edible oils and oilseeds and dairy products. As part of G33, India has strongly supported the need for developing countries to have a Special Safeguard Mechanism (SSM) which would allow them to impose additional tariffs when faced with cheap imports or when there is a surge in imports. However, developed countries and some developing countries have sought to impose

Analysis
extremely restrictive requirements for invoking SSM, which would render this instrument ineffective. As far as agriculture is concerned, overall there does not appear to have been any major shift in India’s negotiating stand. It has firmly resisted making deep tariff cuts on agricultural products. At the same time, it is aggressively pushing developed countries to reduce their farm support. While India’s negotiating strategy has been defensive, in general, there are several products in which it may have an export interest. From India’s perspective it would be most crucial during the Doha negotiations to protect the interests of its farmers, even at the cost of foregoing benefits that might have otherwise been made in services and NAMA negotiations. As far as agriculture negotiations are concerned, the playing field may be tilted further against India if it is required to undertake deep tariff cuts without any concurrent elimination of farm subsidies by developed countries. As far as NAMA is concerned, without a steep reduction in tariffs in the textiles and clothing sector in developed countries, India may not stand to gain significantly.
Independence Day call to action Here’s an excerpt from Modi’s address to the nation on 15, August, 2014, the country’s Indian Independence Day: “My brothers and sisters, it is a country of young people. Therefore I want to appeal all the people world over, from the ramparts of the Red Fort, “Come, make in India”, “Come, manufacture in India”. Sell in any country of the world but manufacture here. We have got skill, talent, discipline, and determination to do something. We want to give the world an favourable opportunity that come here, “Come, Make in India” and we will say to the world, from electrical to electronics, “Come, Make in India”, from automobiles to agro value addition “Come, Make in India”, paper or plastic, “Come, Make in India”, satellite or submarine “Come, Make in India”. Our country is powerful. Come, I am giving you an invitation. Brothers and Sisters, I would like to pose a question to my youngsters as to why despite them, we are forced to import even the smallest of things? My country`s youth can resolve it, they should conduct research, try to find out as to what type of items are imported by India and then each one should resolve that, through may be micro or small industries only, he would manufacture atleast one such item so that we need not import the same in future. We should even advance to a situation wherein we are able to export such items. If each one of our millions of youngsters resolves to manufacture atleast one such item, India can become a net exporter of goods. I, therefore, urge upon the youth, in particular our small entrepreneurs that they would never compromise, atleast on two counts. First, zero defect and, second again zero effect.” — by Jagmohan Sarod

With a beautiful cake made by her granddaughter, singing, dancing, musical performances and scrumptious food throughout the afternoon, the event was definitely a day to be remembered. This was evident when we interviewed the parents. Speaking to her about Be The Change, it
quickly becomes clear how important and dear the organisation is to her heart. She humbly states that her husband is the rock in her accomplishments, her three children and their spouses are her pillars and her four grandchildren make her ceiling of love and care. She considers all her volunteers and donors as bricks of blessing and addresses them as angels in disguise who have continuously supported Be The Change and its worthy cause. In addition, she is thankful to Raju Wadhwani who is the trustee, Leesha Khemlani, Be The Change’s former vice president, and Naresh Gangaramani, the treasurer, for playing a major role in founding Be The Change. Fueling the Fire of Light; Honoring the Men who Fight. T
owards the latter end of October 2014, Indians all over the world would be sparked with a new fuel to celebrate their New Year, Diwali, with friends and family, as well as elements of nature. Among the five elements, the presence of fire is particularly pivotal; not only is it used in almost all rituals of prayer, it is also alight in decorative candles - diyas - to amplify the color and grandeur of the celebrations. With Hong Kong’s growing Indian population set to use their lighters and matchsticks this Diwali, we speak with our local Fire Services Department, and find out how the practices in place keeps Hong Kong

one of the safest places in the world. Hong Kong’s Fire Services Department (FSD) is often earmarked for its high standards that have consistently kept its performance efficiency over 90%. While trying to be both economical and resourceful, the department has kept abreast with the latest advancements of the industry. They are equipped with state of the art engines and machinery, and many of the staff are sent overseas, to places like USA and Australia, for specialized training programs. The firemen are also often seen volunteering and teaching the public on safety practices. Clearly, their dedication to save
human and animal life stretches beyond just their assigned duties. The firemen remind us, however, that their success is largely dependent on the victims’ cooperation. Despite the stresses of the situation, “it is very important for the callers to express themselves clearly,” they reiterate. The victims must convey complete details of the accident, the exact location, and return telephone number. Based on the description, a team of qualified firemen would promptly summon their engines from the nearest station, and strive to arrive at the scene within six minutes.

In the meanwhile, the victims are urged to stay calm and alert, and adhere to all the safety precautions. In instances of fire, people who cannot access the stairs are urged to stay in a room furthest away from the smoke, seal the door with duct tape, and flag their whereabouts to the firemen through the window. Although some rooms may be small and uncomfortable to wait in, especially as Hong Kong properties get smaller and more expensive, the one thing that they would not be lacking in is the safety regulations and facilities. All buildings are now made in compliance
24 | www.adesiflava.com
with the Fire Safety Installation requirements, which mean that they are equipped with accessible fire bells and sprinkler systems. Before making a building, the plan must be approved by the Buildings Department, and in cases where the building is a school or hospital, the FSD may enforce more stringent requirements. Smoking indoors is now a criminal offence, and the burning of firecrackers by the public is banned in Hong Kong. Although this may quieten our Diwali celebrations when compared to India, the value of one’s life is surely more important
than a few hours of dangerous play. Besides these, the FSD hasn’t mandated a particular way or instance in which a fire must not be alighted. Flames are ignited on a regular basis, especially while cooking,

using candles, or illuminating a dark place. Also, religious people, including the local Chinese and Indians, alight fires as part of their rituals. Although fire is often associated with destruction, some religions see it as having a light and sacred energy that can be used to ward off the evil forces. While respecting others’ beliefs and practices, the firemen emphasis that “it is important to strike a balance between traditions and fire safety.” They urge us to keep all corridors, staircases
and passageways free from obstruction at all times, which means that people must be cautious of where and how they keep their diyas during Diwali, especially if the diyas are left unattended all night. Neighboring onlookers scared or suspicious of anything dangerous would have every right to complain and call the FSD. Besides instances of fire, the FSD are called for their rescue services of several other situations. In 2013, there were more
than 31,000 special service calls, which documented cases of victims being stuck in a lift or locked premises, gas leakage, landslide, flooding, and attempted suicide. Following each incident, the firemen formally review their performances, and assess how they could improve. With such a systematic practice in place, it is no surprise then that Hong Kong has remains one of the safest places around. Even when dealing with one of the most dangerous elements of nature, one can be rest assured that any accidents would be handled with utmost professionalism and personal care. It is only then that we can enjoy our festivals and celebrations so peacefully, and ignite the fire that would illuminate and enlighten us. — by Suraj Samtani

Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) Master Plan for Retirement or Meat-Preying for Finanical Institutions?
O
nce we trigger the talk on Hong Kong’s chronic problems, readers’ feedback are unstoppable. To echo with the tide of feedback, we focus the action you regularly do every month but might lack a second-thought to apprehend its purpose. Today, let us spend minutes to pick up your MPF statements. Being the author of this article, I do not intend to seek everyone’s empathy. The MPF accounts of highpaid CEOs only attributed to a tiny fraction of their net worth, their retirement is not our concerns. For the same subject percevied by the MPF Authority (MPFA) and financial practitioners, their views have a conflict of interest so that the fairness is questionable. This article aims to postion yourself in an ordinary employee, with a wish to express a reverse-view and use three argumentations to refute its dignified bearing. I am not sentimentally affected by one or two years’ losses to offer a revenge. All Ordinances, the same as MPF Ordinances, were underwent the third reading in the Legislative Council. Of course, the discussion extends for decades since the idea debuted thiry years ago. To avoid someone conversely refutes me and says, “ Everyone could be a smart guy
30 | www.adesiflava.com
in hindsight”. I stress my contemplation at the outset. It focuses all on the system features and mechanism, not the investment result!
Blind emphasis on financial assets No matter you like it or not, the major selection in MPF spectrum is either stock or bond. Selections are said to offer choices for different ages and risk appettie. However, with more than 15 years, review tells “simplicity is the best, and the most important one have been left out”. If there is an investment expert, over the past decade never indicates optimistic toward gold and offers the upbeat assessment on the property in Hong Kong, without controversy, he is a novice. You need to know that the continuous soar in these two areas are backed by macro-economic factors. But they are not simple reflected in MPF and offered as choice. Supporters and advocators of MPF scheme must use various reasons to defend its existence value. Don’t let them divert our attention. The litmus test is stragithforwad. We favour whatever plan intrincially benefical to employee. With MPF favours complication
and avoids simplicity, how can we apprehend the MPF system as beneficial in the absence of direct sharing of economic gain? In fact, putting our money in gold and in The Link REIT (stock code : 823), which is equivalent to Hong Kong’s property stake, suffices to meet this purpose. In reality, the MPF scheme deprived everyone of a simple handling approach and forced everyone to bet in a dissatisfactory way. In the past few years, you and I have witnessed the European debt crisis and the U.S financial crisis. They widespread as battle fires to pervade the entire world. Hitherto, no central government proposes to sell their gold reserve to pay off the debt even though it could be a viable solution. Some of their reserves were established after the World War II when the gold price was significantly cheaper than it is. Why no one venture into this direction? Because all governments are sober, the credibility of the financial assets in the future will turn volatile and uncertain. Only by keeping gold in the reserve can they retain the currency trusthworthiness. The trade-off is just a natural response of human behavior. They keep the valuable items in safe and try to kick out the

rubbish to other’s garden. If our MPF system continues to use a financial product-based approach, it fosters a silly system to encourage a detrimental outcome. Flaw Index: ***** (five * is the highest)
Blind reliance on fund managers’ abilities As mentioned in the preceding paragraph, MPF selections fluctuate with macroeconomic environment. On the other hand, you could have a simple approach to combat inflation and to devise retirement arrangements. At present, you
have no choice to incorporate human factor - fund managers’ decision. Many employees could probably dissatisfy with the absurd logic: “Fund Managers’ mistakes, but I suffer”. As a forced operation, transparency and accountability are desired to introduce in the MPF system so that we know who operate our money and how good their decision and ethic are. Having perused my MPF annual reports for years, I have no idea on who and what is their background in doing better than myself . MPF practitioners may argue that they have profound financial studies and seasoned accountants to do better than an ordinary person
does. With the past results illustrate, it is not truth. You and I also encounter the experience that drug application to the West could unsuitable to the Oriental body. Similarly, the knowledge and methods used in Western Countries may wreck in developing countries, especially in China and India which have a long history deviated the development of capitalism. Some scholars even describe the present era is a paradigm shift. Even if you’re knowledgeable or achieve doctorate in Western countries, the knowledge usefulness in developing countries takes time to verify. Fund managers do investment on scheme member’s belalf have a high feeling of experimental meaning.
www.adesiflava.com | 31
Bauhinia View one. Now, the lockup money is released upon retirement, however, it is merely enough to buy a bathroom in Guangzhou. This is sufficient to ridicule, MPF scheme should have a wider consideration. Its rigidity is a very backward mentality. Readers of A-Desi-flow should deeply share this feeling. Perhaps a readers’s career is devoted to companies in Tsimsahishui or Central, but their retirement could link to India or UK. So, MPFA should allow “overseas retirement plan” be one of the exemption reasons. Honestly, the high living standard could deter someone’s continuous wish to live in Hong Kong after retirement.
2011 is one of the best examples to illustrate how terrible the fund managers in China market and in Asian cities. A double-digit loss is not unusual and nearly no fund manager could avoid. In June 2014, the market has a clue to resume bullish. Our MPF returns are likely positive this year. But is it due to fund mangers’ effort? It is hard to utter. Failure index: **** (five * is the highest)
Lack of global perspective to meet with nowaday’s reitrment plan The launch of the MPF aims to provide a plan for retirement. Is it implied we cannot have a better planning in the lack of such scheme? Is private planning necessary inferior to public planning? Under the existing MPF system, the official age to redeem is 65. Prior to the age 65, only several conditions allow early withdrawal. Overall, our money is trapped in a tight box to yield uncertain returns. Nonetheless, we are living in a globalized world which differs from the one the scheme proposed thirty years ago. Large companies have already adopted approach in the global resource allocation and human deployment. In a globalized view, sales locations, production location and saving location could come from various areas of the map. Retirement location could be irrelevant to them too. For instant, we embark on a Hong Kong career but we can also deposit funds in other corners of the world. Many readers, Indians or other expatriates, could be a good example that their circumstances have already hinted to retire in elsewhere. Definitely, the subject employee should know more than others do to plan for overseas retirement matters. Nevertheless, this category of staff cannot exempt from MPF enrollment. The only result as found, their money is contributed to

benefit financial institutions’ business. Let’s quote a good example to see how ironic the lockup of money in an inflexible scheme. Imagined a Hong Kong worker who had foreseen the burdensome to retire in Hong Kong 15 years ago and expected to live in the suburban of Guangzhou for the rest of his life. The same as we do, he cannot but to contribute 5% to the scheme in his career because he is working in Hong Kong. Now, this arrangement brings about a nightmare, not aid, to this individual’s future. Had the money released for alternative use 15 years ago, the individual could have bought a property in Guangzhou at a very cheap price. His retirement life is a enjoyful

The MPF system deficiencies surely exceed the three I mentioned. The reason why I have chosen these three is they are the decisive facts to refute the scheme setup purpose. No matter this year the statement offers you a gain or a loss, try to think deeper. You could be worse off in comparison with the alternatives I mentioned. After receiving numerous criticisms, the MPFA has actively reviewed the operation of MPF and willing to listen various parties’ opinions. Therefore, this simple statement entails immense meaning. Please express your view and don’t take it for granted anymore. You could think of the fourth, the fifth or the sixth!

34 | www.adesiflava.com

buzz
Indo China Buzz: What’s the latest? A section where we dive into the latest news and developments focusing on the relationship building exercises conducted by our two great nations, India and China. Age-old neighbours, partners in each other’s prosperity, and forging new ties to take our great nations to new heights into the 21st century. Largest showcase of Indian culture, heritage in China as part of year long festival
India and China usher in greater military understanding along its border The Indian Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army met in a ceremonial border personnel meeting on August 15, India’s Independence Day. The two sides met on the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the boundary demarcating Chineseadministered land from Indian-administered land in the disputed regions of northeastern Kashmir. Specifically, the troops met in eastern Ladakh, near where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi traveled last week and delivered a speech condemning Pakistan. According to The Hindu, a similar ceremony was held on the Chinese side of the border on August 1. According to a public relations officer on the Indian side, Col. S.D. Goswami, “Both sides reiterated their commitment in upholding the protocols and agreements signed between the two countries and acknowledged that the peace

and tranquility which prevails along the Line of Actual Control should be further strengthened and stabilized.” India and China signed a Border Defense Cooperation Agreement (BDCA) last October following a stand-off in April 2013 where a small contingent of Chinese PLA troops entered the Indian side of the LAC and set up camp for about three weeks. The BDCA was intended to swiftly resolve these sorts of incursions in the future. According to the Wall Street Journal‘s Live Mint, the meeting was less administrative and more focused on fostering good military-tomilitary ties between the two sides. Both sides enjoyed “cultural and entertainment shows and sports events.” Col. Goswami noted that the “participation of Chinese delegation in India’s Independence Day celebrations is a gesture which will further foster friendly relations between India and China and build up mutual trust and confidence.”
Aptly called “Glimpses of India”, the largest ever festival of Indian culture and heritage in China was inaugurated in Shanghai and Beijing with a classical dance programme performed by the Chennai-based Kalakshetra earlier this May. The year-long festival will have a sprinkling of the usual ingredients often served as an intrinsic part of Indian culture – movies, Yoga, an exhibition of IT and cuisine from different parts of the country. A break from the tradition will be the focus on Buddhism including an exhibition of Buddhism-related artefacts exhibited in the 200- year-old Indian Museum in Kolkata. “It will be a very large exhibition,” Ravindra Singh, secretary of culture, told Indian journalists in Beijin. Singh said this was the first time that Indian culture was being showcased in China in such a large-scale.“The focus is on people who do not know India...to reach out to the Chinese youth,” Singh said.A film festival with around a dozen Hindi and regional language movies is expected to be held later this year. A bunch of movies has been submitted to the Chinese government for their censor board to see and certify. China's Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jianchao, while inaugurating the festival, said: “Even today, the Chinese people are mesmerised by the mysterious culture of India and also eager to learn more about the oriental wisdom, spirit and charm embodied in the Indian civilisation.” “I believe that the activities during the Glimpses also offer an opportunity and window to Chinese people to learn about India, get close to India and embrace India,” Liu added.
Chinese students rush to Gujarat to learn Hindi amidst growing trade between India and China With trade relations between India and China thriving, several Chinese nationals are now flocking to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state of Gujarat to learn Hindi. at China's Yunnan Minzu University is in India to learn Hindi. Growing business relations between India and China have triggered a trend where Chinese students want to learn Hindi. Li Chaoling aims to be a Hindi teacher in China and she already speaks the language to some extent. "Mujhe aasha hain ki Hindi ki adhyapika banu (I want to be a Hindi teacher and teach more people to learn Hindi)", says Chaoling. Chaoling is one of the 11 Chinese students who have enrolled for the nine-month Business Hindi Certification Course at Ahmedabad's Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India. The students want to work as translators with companies that do business with India and want
to teach Hindi in Chinese schools and colleges. Others want to be entrepreneurs and do business with Indian companies. "What we are teaching is business Hindi... They have to communicate with Indians in business situations... demand, supply, quality, taxation etc," says Dr Dinesh Awasthi, Director, EDI. Even though these students have been in India for less than a week, their fascination with Bollywood is evident as they sing a popular Bollywood number. — by Ameya Pathak

technology
Waterproof gadgets to beat the rain T here is little doubt that the advantages of technology are myriad. But if there’s one thing for certain, then the relationship between technology and mother nature is a bit iffy. Let’s be honest, gadgets and gizmos are meant for use in a controlled environment and they don’t fare all too well when exposed to the elements. While we all absolutely adore our electronics, the harsh monsoons are notoriously infamous for wreaking sheer havoc on our beloved devices. Come June every year, not only do umbrellas and rainy shoes come out of the closet,
but also plastic sheets, wrappers and seals to keep our tech toys moisture-free. Thankfully enough, the advantages of technology are myriad. Thankfully even more, the impending monsoons seem a tad bit more bearable given the army of accessories existing exclusively to safeguard your electronic devices -- be it a smartphone, tablet, laptop, digital watch, MP3 player, GPS device, or the likes. It’s big business and everyone wants a piece of the action, while the monsoon lasts. However, there are two sides to every coin.
Even the most experienced of potential buyers tend to get lost in the cesspool that the Internet can be, littered with products making all sorts of false promises that even rival Hitler’s propaganda in the 30s. But worry not, we are here to point you in the right direction. With that said, here is a definitive list of accessories that ask the monsoon to shower itself dry on some of our most precious water-allergic gadgets.

technology Understanding IP Rating You may notice that certain gadgets designed to withstand the elements come with what’s called an IP code. This is a standard that helps determine waterproof and dustproof capabilities with a simple rating. Take a look at the table below to understanding the different IP Ratings that a gadget may have and what do they mean. IP rating Protection against solid objects Protection against water/liquids 0 No protection No protection 1 Protected against solid objects over 50mm Protected against vertically falling drops of water or condensation. 2 Protected against solid objects over 12.5mm Protected against falling drops of water up to 15° from vertical 3 Protected against solid objects over 2.5mm Protected against sprays of water from any direction up to 60° from vertical 4 Protected against solid objects over 1.0mm Protected against splashes of water from any direction 5 Protected against dust with no harmful deposit Protected against low pressure water jets from any direction 6 Totally protected against dust Protected against high pressure water jets from any direction 7 N/A Protected against short periods of immersion in water between 150mm to 1 metre 8 N/A Protected against long periods of immersion in water at a specified depth
Nikon1AW1
Remember how everyone tries to ninja their smartphones or cameras on the first hint of rainfall, to avoid the devices from getting spoilt? Say goodbye to all of that, because for all you shutterbugs out there who want to capture the myriad shades of rain and monsoon in still pictures and videos, you have to get yourself the new Nikon 1 AW1, claimed to be the world’s first waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses. Supporting high speed shooting modes, this Nikon camera can withstand water submersion up to a depth of 15 metres. Rain can’t put a dampener on that now, can it?

Kyocera Hydro Elite With so much of our world gravitating around our smartphones, we can’t have them expose to moisture and humidity and go belly up in the monsoon now, can we? This phone, the Kyocera Hydro Elite, is shown to be waterproof by none other than Discovery Channel’s most avidly reckless adventurer. Nothing else compares. Not even its specs matter! Panasonic Toughbook CF-19 As far as a fully functional mobile computer (in other words a laptop) that you can carry around in extreme weather and temperature, including rainfall, it just doesn’t get any better than the Panasonic Toughbook. This beast of a laptop is fitted an enclosure that’s tested on US military specs standard, designed to protect its sensitive electronics innards from dirt, dust, grime and even water. That’s right, the Toughbook CF-19 isn’t water submersible, but it is spill and splash proof. Forget rainfall, but even if you were to use it as a shield against someone trying to drench you in a jet of water through a water gun on Holi, this laptop should be just fine. Not a dent or a drip. Amazing, isn’t it?
Sony Walkman NWZ-W273
Anyone who said the good ol’ MP3 is dead obviously didn’t budget in the fact that you can’t take most smartphones on a lap through the swimming pool. Which is what the Sony W273 Walkman series MP3 player promises to do! It’s waterproof up to 6 feet of submersion, and has a cool wrap-around design that makes it look like a very funky pair of earphones, nothing more. But don’t be fooled by its minimalistic, chic design, as the W273 houses 4GB of storage space and the capacity to store up to 900 songs. Enough for a month’s worth of swimming, and then some.

Dear Aunty MVP, I’m Mike , please advice the best thing I can do in this situation. The mother of one of my best friends was diagnosed with liver cancer a few months ago. She is quite ill and in a lot of pain. She's been in and out of the hospital lately and things don't look so good. My own father was diagnosed with prostate cancer a year and a half ago, but he is really doing quite well (with medication, treatment, etc.). My friend's mother will probably be dead within six months to a year, so I'm not going through an immediate crisis. My question is: What things should (and shouldn't) I be saying to, and doing for, my friend? I try so hard to be there for her but I really don't know what she's going through. She is very matter-of-fact about the fact that her mom is going to die. But I'm sure there's something I could be doing, isn't there? I hate feeling like I'm actually making her feel worse! Could you give me some idea of what she might be going through right now and how I could help? Even if it's a method for taking her mind off it occasionally (if that's a good idea). Thanks, Just Trying to Help Dear Mike, It must be hard for your friend to believe and face sudden condition of her mother. She could be shocked, afraid, confused or hurt. Express your genuine concern and empathy. Your support and care for them will be more important than feeling sorry for them. Your friend will eventually recognize and accept that in life, one cannot avoid pain and death. She will gather strength and spend the remaining time more meaningfully and closely with mother. You can guide the patient to face her illness bravely. Let her know that you are there to care for her and for your friend. If you believe in any faith; pray for her. Prayer does bring inner healing and give hope for long living and security. Your father seems to be fortunate to have vanquished the disease and is relishing good health. Praise the Almighty for such a miraculous recovery. Continue to care and pray for him too.
Aunty Please Help!! I’m Nisha and I have done the almost impossible thing — I met the most wonderful person ever! We have so much in common and we are married. My problem is that my love wants to spend every weekend together, spend one night together during the week, and go out after work sometimes, too. After the first few months, all of this love and time together is getting a little stifling for me. Lately I lied and said I was sick so I could have some time alone. I really want this relationship to work! I don't want hurt his feelings by saying I need a little breathing room, but I don't want to keep making up excuses to spend some time alone. Hi Nisha, It appears you are feeling guilty about your r e c e n t r e l a ti o n s h i p. S i n c e yo u b oth a r e married adults you perhaps need to rethink this relationship. You have to understand his reason to be in relationship with you. Is it true love, infatuation or lust to satisfy his physical need? If you are already feeling claustrophobic, let him know your feelings at the same time be ready for consequences of this relationship. Best wishes Nisha. Dear Aunty MVP please help! Im Aditi and I’m in my late 20’s . I'm so insecure that my first reaction when I'm asked a question about myself is to lie and make myself seem like I'm more than I am. It's not even with questions, I've made up stories, and taken other people's stories as my own and I can't seem to stop. What can I do? Hi Aditi, You have understood correctly insecure or people with low self-esteem seek attention. Wanting at tention isn't a problem. Pret t y much all humans want attention! But getting it through lies sounds like something that is starting to get to you, which also shows you are aware and want to make a change. If you have friends who are willing to listen to spicy stories then you are getting into habit of creating more. Without realizing it is damaging your self -image. You may get caught up in a situation
Love and Relationships
that could be humiliating. It's obvious you don't like lying. It's a means to an end. It's the attention you like. So the scales here are real simple. On one side you have the weight of your love of attention; on the other the weight of your dislike of lying. The dislike of lying needs to weigh more. it needs to weigh more than the love of attention. You could find a totally different way to get a lot of attention. Rationalize your fears find something you are really good at (that is positive) and do something different. If you are creative, do a lot of art, or whatever it is you are creative with. Or try acting! Being on stage and portraying another character is a great way to get attention in a positive way. Or work with people: kids, or elderly – You may find it very satisfying, and will certainly receive positive attention.
Dear Aunty MVP please guide as I’m all confused what’s wrong with me . I’m just in my early 30’s my name is Vivek. I live in Tung Chung area .I'm always tired. I get plenty of rest (at least eight hours a night), eat healthy, and exercise regularly. I went to my doctor and he took blood only to conclude that I am perfectly healthy. But every day, I am exhausted constantly to the point that it affects my everyday activities. Any suggestions as to what I can do? Or what is making me tiered that I just want to be home after work and do nothing. Hi Vivek It is good to know that you have consulted your doctor and you are perfectly healthy. With a few simple lifestyle changes, it is likely that you have the power to put the vitality back in your life. Besides physical exercise,
balanced diet control and good sleep you are following well. Consider other ways that can boost your energy levels. You may focus on mental, emotional, social, and spiritual aspect of your life. Seek meaning and purpose in life. Appreciate who you are and people in your life. Prayer and meditation too can give you content and boost energy level. Believe in your healthy body. Talk to yourself and feed your body with positive talk. Before going home, plan your evening believing that you are full of vitality and you are going to enjoy your evening to the fullest. Stay healthy and happy! If you have any love or relationship related questions for which you wish to take advice from Aunty Poonam, Please send us your questions to info@adesiflava.com with subject line Aunty Poonam Mehta. Ranbir Kapoor to meet Katrina Kaif's mother Suzanne?
T
hey haven't even made their relationship official yet but buzz has it that Ranbir Kapoor is wasting no time in meeting rumored girlfriend Katrina's Kaif mother Suzanne Turquotte in London. Whether they admit it or not there sure seems to be some huge development taking place. First there were the reports claiming they were buying a flat together and moving; then came the romantic getaways and now finally this. Reportedly Katrina Kaif has already met Ranbir's family including matriarch Krishna Raj.
And his latest trip to London will have Ranbir meeting her mom but it won't be the first time. Ranbir and Katrina, along with their mothers Neetu Singh and Suzanne, have reportedly already met before. But the sudden shift in gears has us wondering that there could be more. He's reportedly finishing his shoot in Corsica for Imtiaz Ali's Tamasha opposite ex Deepika Padukone, and will soon have some free time on his hands. And we guess it makes sense to use it for the best - a little trip to London.
Govinda says no to film with Alia Bhatt !!
P
utting an end to all speculations of a film starring actor Govinda and Alia Bhatt as father and daughter respectively, it has now been reported that Govinda has apparently turned down the film. Director Vikas Bahl of Queen fame was planning on bringing to the screen yesteryear superstar Govinda playing father to a cool and vibrant Alia.
44 | www.adesiflava.com
The film has been tentatively titled 'Shaandar'. While reasons for Govinda backing out of the project range from apparent financial disagreements to prior commitments, neither the actor nor director have given out a formal announcement. The film starring Alia Bhatt and Shahid Kapoor is Vikas Bahl's second film after Queen and will be shot extensively in Europe.
Juhi Chawla Faces Disappointment in Hollywood
J
uhi Chawla is going to be starring in a Steven Spielberg production The Hundred Foot Journey, directed by Lasse Hallstrom. The current buzz in Bollywood is that Juhi Chawla is extremely disappointed in what was meant to be her Hollywood debut. Even as The Hundred-Foot Journey is being talked about, it’s not what Juhi signed up for. According to sources, she was given a different impression altogether and was told she would have a pivotal role as Om Puri’s wife in the film. But rumour has it that all the scenes Juhi shot for were snipped at the editing table and she only appears in the beginning of the film. She’s said to be quite mad at this and has refused to promote the film. On the other hand, you have Govinda who supposedly turned down James Cameron who approached him with a script. Govinda has said that he told James the film was a potential blockbuster but thank you, he didn’t want to sign up for it. Even as you ask why anyone would turn down James Cameron, Govinda’s reasons are unique as he says he didn’t want to be painted blue in the film! Also, Juhi is going to be ageing 15 years for the film -- at least digitally with advanced post-production techniques. We can't wait to see Juhi's new avatar and are proud of her for bagging this amazing role! Good going Chirpy Chawla.

Aamir Khan defends nudity on PK poster
S
uperstar Aamir Khan, who has left many intrigued and many ridiculing him over his nude look in the poster of his upcoming film "PK", says it's not for publicity. Calling it "key art", he says it depicts the story of the film. The poster of Rajkumar Hirani's "PK" features Aamir posing nude with a strategically placed boombox hiding his modesty. While some appreciated the dare bare act, some even criticised it and even called it a "publicity stunt". Talking about it, Aamir said: "When you (audience) will watch the film then only you will be able to understand the idea behind (the poster). But I would just like to say that the kind of filmmaker, the kind of writer Rajkumar is, he always tries to present the things, his thinking, in a unique way and that's why I am his huge fan." Aamir spoke on the sidelines of a screening of Marathi film "Saturday Sunday" here Wednesday. Citing the example of the poster of one of his past production and directorial debut, "Taare Zameen Par", he said: "In the poster of 'Taare Zameen Par', the child (actor Darsheel Safary) is sitting in the front on the school bench and I am sitting behind him. So it is a kind of key art...the image that tells you much about the story and so is the poster of 'PK'." "This is not for publicity, not for us atleast. Infact, this poster embibes all the elements of the film." Meanwhile, a case was also filed in a court in Kanpur recently against Aamir, director Rajkumar Hirani and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra. They were accused of promoting nudity and vulgarity through "PK" poster. However, the actor is hopeful that everything will get clear once people watch the film when it releases in December. "We are getting a mixed response from the people. But I feel that when they will watch the film, their doubts will get cleared," the 49-year-old said. "PK" also features actor Sanjay Dutt, Anushka Sharma and Sushant Singh Rajput.

Astrology
september 2014 Very special thanks to Bejan Daruwalla Sir for his continued support and blessings towards A-Desiflava Magazine.
Aries: Ganesha says you now give home and family, your mate, loved ones, their due space in firm up satisfactorily only later. What’s truly awesome in this glory is the joy in love that brings you spectacular contentment. And that’s only one part of it - albeit the best. A sense of balance and harmony is ushered in this week. In that respect, that is the major gain, for in all other aspects there is a definite confirmation of the trends of last week. Taurus: You swing back to your devil may - care, reckless attitude to life. Ganesha warns you, however, not to throw away all your marvelous gains for a whim. What you need to guard against is rashness, carelessness or immaturity, in financial matters (most particularly) and family altercations, if they arise. And they do arise, even in the most closely knit and well - adjusted families. They could also be the reason for the change in your attitude. You may be so upset that you become careless, rather than caring too much. Whatever may be the reason, the hasty, impetuous, rash side of the dichotomy is at the forefront this week and my advice to you, obviously, is to curb these tendencies and just wait things out quietly. Patience, equally obviously is necessary. Gemini:- Some negative aspects come to us all from time to time; and so with you Gemini’s in this phase, but let me give you the good part first, since it helps you cope not just adequately but intelligently and successfully. Fortunately for you, Ganesha blesses you with accord and harmony relating to family and loved ones and spouse/mate. They are you inspiration and strength. Otherwise, what this week contains are just COMPLICATIONS. The whole gamut could be in store for you, from family squabbles and even “international incidents” and confrontations at work with bosses/authority figures. Obviously, not ALL of these will happen to very Gemini, but one or more are a distinct possibility.
Cancer:- You may not want to make any great effort this week. You could be feeling low, after the various stresses and pulls that had to be dealt with. Suddenly, you throw off your inertia. Problems and demands continue, but you feel very confident about coping. Money may be tight, but there is understanding with 46 | www.adesiflava.com
people close to you. Not only does it tide you over, but it inspires you to help others. Do some charitable/philanthropic work, look at deeper values. You are determined to take care of those who look to you for support and sustenance, and even those who don’t Somewhat like Ganesha, who watches over all of us.
Leo:- The gains of last week are sustained through this one, too. You realize the importance of ties, family and caring. You know that absence of worry is necessary for peace of mind and for meditation practices. So, you set about handling commitments, funds for family and security, and your own capacity to handle income-generating activities . Virgo:- You need to hold back your impetuous streak and hastiness. A time to avoid rashness and impatience very rigidly. You need to not just brush away the cobwebs, but also think of new and bright moves and how to implement them. There are snags, but several points of progress and change, too. Your main concerns now will pertain strictly to family matters and affairs. New projects and ventures can be discussed and planned. The time is more favorable now. And this could be on both fronts-business and domestic, even more so. Libra:-
A contented and quiet phase is yours to enjoy. At last-you may well say. New goals and orientations and a willingness to accept new responsibility with grace makes for harmony and peace in family life and marriage. Simultaneously, work concerns, your career and, of course, your finances will be strongly focalized. A boon could come also in terms of a)travel to broaden your mind, and b)further study, gaining fresh expertise/skills/knowledge.
Scorpio:- You will realize, as perhaps never before, the value of good relationships. And these run the entire gamut from friends to colleagues, to loved ones, to spouse, to parents/children. There could be some differences arising, thought the interactions will be mostly cordial and warm, you will be much more retrained and tactful so that conflicts do not arise. Now is the time when your energy levels and spirits are raised tremendously. What also zooms is money – lucky wins, investments that shoot up and even a bonus could be seen.
Sagittarius:- Ganesha gives you a good week, even though you may not be expecting it. You’ve been experiencing and upswing in all aspects of life-health, love, career, money, spirituality. You might be justified in thinking, or rather, fearing that the law of gravity will come into action, i.e., what goes up must come down, but all it brings on right now is a mood of what the poet calls “Gather ye rosebuds while ye may” While you have fun, you’re not averse to putting in both extra effort and a fair amount of hard work. Result? There is more good news in store – awards, rewards, recognition, and personal popularity. Capricorn:-
The upward swing hasn’t stopped yet. All the Ps-praise, promotion, perks, personal benefits/parents, prestige – in some form or the other will be there and to round off the feast, the P of profession. Your boss/superior/the powers-that-be, are also pleased with you, personally and regarding your performance at work. Truly a splendid week.
Aquarius:- You feel now that you’ve finally got yourself where you wanted to be. All the tumults and glory will finally quieted down in this phase-peace and contentment prevail, and some much needed rest and relaxation, surrounded by those you love, by friends, good companions who share your ideas. You are truly grateful and appreciative of all you’ve got going for you over the past weeks. It makes you mellow and gentle in all your dealings. You’ve finally come into a phase when all is well with your little world. A spirit of harmony, of identifying with your environment, envelops you and, by extension, those close to you. Pisces:-
Another phase of closeness, bonding and affection. With your family, children, loved ones, too, there is an excitement in personal interaction. If you are single and also fancy-free, you might find yourself falling in love, or being irresistibly drawn to someone you find exciting. It’s sent you off, travelling to new or unknown places in a spirit of adventure. You’re determined to squeeze every drop of intoxication from the act of living itself. New sports, interests, work options and projects and even leisure activities draw you to prove yourself or just enjoy the ride, as they say. — Article written by Poonam Motihar
Astrology
October 2014 Aries:
Ganesha says, watch out for new developments. You will be looking at true growth, comprising your own assets and your larger role in the community. You will look inwards at your own limitations and will also spend time with welfare activities and charities. You move positively from the worldly affairs that occupied you till recently to more self - analyzing and introspection. Your main criterion is personal growth and you will do all that you can to progress in the right direction. Ganesha gives you blessings.
Taurus:
Ganesha makes this phase truly challenging and you have a strong and tough month. You probably feel that you have been pursuing the wrong goals. The focus will be on loans and funds and, strangely, on passion and sex. There may also be some neuroses, anxiety, minor alignments and an unsettled feeling to contend with. You may turn to prayer and meditation. This is a testing time and you will tap into the spiritual nooks and crannies of your being, and your soul for answers.
with a sense of satisfaction. Ganesha send you your due rewards in several ways. This is a joyous phase filled with good tidings. There is a welcome twist too with travel, journeys for fun or for work, partnerships and ties, whether new or old, romantic ties and attachments, even greater joy in matrimony and other bonds. There is a change in the momentum with new interests, new pursuits and a new slant on life.
coming to a close and it is a good time for reflection. You started off with ambition and grand plans on the work front and then saw a platter ranging from strange esoteric pursuits, to flights of fancy, the supernatural and even the supernatural but back to the drawing board now and it is time for investments, finances (loans, funds, buying, selling) and capital raising.
Virgo:
Capricorn: You have put in a lot in terms of ideas, efforts and commitment and this is the time for reaping the harvest. You like the sweet sound of good money in the bank and the social standing and perquisites that come in the form of pleasing symbols of success. You enjoy it all without a second thought, and why not? They bring joy to you and your family. You look back on the year and even seek to expand on the good fortune coming to you from time well spent. The health of an elder in the family can cause grave concern.
This is the time for the expansion and extension of your mental horizons. New inclinations and predilections, a new focus, are even more likely to emerge than they were last month. You move towards spirituality and the higher issues of life and are concerned with justice, law and order and the higher consciousness. More than just acquiring knowledge, it will be a widening of the vistas of your mind that interests you. Travel, publicity, visits, interviews, meets, conferences, collaborations and networking (including even in - laws, kin, and distant relatives) within and outside the family.
Gemini: Your good spirits will be restored. There will be success with people you want to have fun and enjoy the limelight. You seek out good company, good friends, good food and all the good things of life. Which I mentioned earlier. Being sociable, amiable and outgoing, you will be partying and socializing. Ganesha has given you charisma and charm, even good looks and a deceptively seductive manner. You use it in all your interactions with disarming effect. You are caught up at several levels of social life - both meeting and even renewing old acquaintances and friendships.
Libra:
Cancer: Money and the people in your life will both be in sharp focus this quarter. You will look at new avenues of business, sources of income. Ganesha warns against both, a) too much socializing, once again, and not to b) mixing business with pleasure. This may lead to situations you don’t want to get into and are better off without. You are friendly and sociable and also keen to get on with overhauling of your both career and income. Leasing, rentals and business deals, taxes, funding, will be part of the theme this month.
Scorpio: You will look at changing your lifestyle and priorities. You need to get your act together and need to do some hard rethinking. Ganesha tell you to look deep within yourself; you have had too much of a social life, been a party animal, and your expenses are also mounting. You need to guard against arousing animosity in others as well. People get jealous of you. You think and act big and are breaking new ground in a number of spheres, but don’t forget that even ordinary ties are important.
Leo: Your life is moving at a certain pace and in the right directions and you will be filled

At one level, you are at the crossroads. You need to make strong decisions. You don’t want your success / popularity, good interactions to slip and falter. It is also a great time to help the community at large, to share resources, and give charity and monetary help. You work with purpose and want to get act together professionally in the larger social context as well as within your immediate social circle. Money will also be an important consideration and better planning and effort will be required. There is a need also to streamline relationships.
Sagittarius: This sun in your own signs
Aquarius: You are in introspection mode. You even look at parapsychology Medicare, healing mind and bodies, charities will take your time and energy and quite happily too. You have many desires to be fulfilled and are filled with a new mindset of inquiry. The moon phase brings a sense of completion and direction to the growth of the past several months. Pisces: You are pressured by commitments to work and family. Both will need hard work and effort. There will also be the investments and outlays, both financial and with time. You will have a lot of coping to do as they are all linked. It can be a heavy burden and so guard against overdoing it. But, whatever you do now, the results that follow will be pleasant. I must also tell you now that this is a special time and is filled with favors coming your way. It will be almost ideal for getting things done.

Prime time for kindergarten kids in hk “ It’s the most crucial time for parents of kindergarten kids to find and secure a place for their children in a primary school.....a stepping stone to their future..... it’s time for decision making.”
T
he primary years education of any child is the most formidable important and a precious time for his or her life as it not only determines their future line of education but also how he will grow up to be. Will these 6-7 years of his life blend his abilities and opportunities or will withdraw him from the interest to explore and learn until the end of time. Every parent with a child ready for primary faces this most crucial time.... A time for decision making. It starts from considering an appropriate primary school that best suits the child or in today’s rat race the best child that suits the school. Gossip, hearsay and endless debate about the merits and demerits of schools and systems is carried out which one should seriously not get into. However we need to consider various pros and cons while deciding on this adventure for our children. With Hong Kong providing alternatives that can be sometimes overwhelming or confusing each
parent needs to fully consider their own options before stepping ahead. Parents can keep an open mind gather information by personally visiting the school or browsing through its website or speaking to existing parents and students of various schools. Usually most parents keep in mind the curriculum teachers standards levels of education it’s facilities extra curricular activities the overall fee structure and the location of the school. Parents also need you make a decision based on the curriculum it offers like IB IGCSE GCSE international local bi lingual. School choices can also be based on the category it belongs to like ESF ISF DSS. Or Aided schools. However parents should note that whichever school they choose each has its own individual and strict procedures from application deadlines interview formalities to announcement of results. These usually start from August September and end in January. Some could extend during their
supplementary add on phase from June till August. As much as you put in your efforts in this multi tracking school admission system to find the best school for your child there are bound to be hitches ups and downs as you may have chosen the best school for your child but the school may not choose you thus adding to enormous pressures resulting in multi choosing from the parents end. But once the right choices have been made potential candidates been chosen and complex processes being complete parents feel greatly rewarded and now see their children complete their primary years of education in a fulfilling and rewarding manner To conclude in every part of the world has a right to basic primary education. The most formative years of their life to learn and play. Lets together both schools and parents make primary education an achievable experience for parents and children. — by Poonam Motihar
