About Emporia State  The university was founded in March of 1863 when the Kansas Legislature passed the enabling act to establish the Kansas State Normal School. In February of 1923, the name of the school was changed to the Kansas State Teachers College. In July of 1974, the name was changed to Emporia Kansas State College. On April 21, 1977, the college became Emporia State University. Since 1863 more than 150,000 students have studied at ESU.

 Combined Rural areas  ~63%

Financial Aid  Rising cost of a diploma 

“Average published tuition and fees at public four-year colleges and universities increased by 13% in 2015 dollars over the five years from 2010-11 to 2015-16, following a 24% increase between 2005-06 and 2010-11” (CollegeBoard, 2016).

“After decades of expanding enrollments, applications have begun tapering off. College enrollment peaked in 2011. With millions of recent debt-burdened college graduates still underemployed by one of the worst recessions on record, many students and their families are wondering why tuition keeps rising, and how much higher it will go. Meanwhile, the ongoing rise in costs have stretched families' capacity to pay for college to nearly the breaking point …. With the total level of student debt outstanding at more than $1.2 trillion, parents, students and researchers are now asking: how is this sustainable? And why does college cost so much?” (Schoen, 2016).

 Outside factors impacting continuous attendance 

Story of “Jeff”

Middle/Secondary Teacher Education  17 Teaching Fields 

Biology, Business, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, English, Journalism, Mathematics, Physics, History/Government (social studies), Speech/Theater, Art, TESOL, Spanish, Health, Music (instrumental/vocal), and Physical Education

 Secondary education majors at ESU are actually majors in their respective departments—advised by a faculty member from that content area, but begin teacher education curriculum within The Teachers College in their junior/senior year  Professional Semesters include Phase I (Educational Psychology, Principles of Secondary Education, and Behavior Management) and Phase II (Student Teaching). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKVKf25Wttw&feature=youtu.be

What is “The Changing Face”?  An examination of sex, age, race, language, rural vs. urban, SES, and other aspects of pre-service teachers.  “The K-12 student population has never been more diverse …. but the teaching force continues to be dominated by white women” (Sawchuk, 2016, p. 8)  Nationally, Black males represent roughly 2% of all public school teachers (Mitchell, 2016, p. 10).  “Research has found that nonblack teachers have significantly lower educational expectations for black students than black teachers do when evaluating the same students” (Mitchell, 2016, p. 10).
