The time has come for a new way of looking at the mountains. For years, we’ve been out there conquering the highest summits; nothing has changed. But it is not just about the summit any more. New possibilities have evolved, some of which are limitless or even gravity-free. We can climb, run, bike and fly. We can venture into new territory, striving for new heights and gliding above the world below. We can live more intensely than ever before and set new limits.

Guido’s World When it comes to multi-sport versatility, Guido Unterwurzacher runs, bikes, climbs and flies in his playground of the Alps. But with only so many hours in the day, how does the Austrian find the time for all four activities? For Guido, it comes down to having unlimited imagination, insatiable passion and a love of pushing his limits. Guido seems to have been given four times as many hours each day than the rest of us. How else can you explain that, in a single day, Guido will find time to pack in a huge morning trail run, a lunchtime rock climbing session with routes up to highest grades, an afternoon flight through gorgeous Austrian valleys on his paraglider, and an evening mountainbike ride down twisting single tracks? What would take most of us four days, Guido gets to experience almost every day, always with his big ear-to-ear grin across his face. This multi-sport versatility is a direct result of where Guido grew up: in Going, Austria. With its surrounding peaks and active outdoor community, this Austrian alpine playground provided Guido with unlimited opportunities to stoke his imagination and passion for outdoor sports. >>

His mountain education was also bolstered by some key mentors. Guido’s uncle Tom taught him to climb at the world-renowned Schleierwasserfall, located near their hometown. This climbing area is famous as the training grounds for none other than Alexander Huber, who once free-soloed the route Kommunist (8b+) here. Having this cliff, with so many hard routes and being surrounded by a community of world-class climbers certainly helped to raise Guido’s levels quickly.

It wasn’t just the number of stamps in his passport that were expanding; his portfolio of different mountain sports was growing bigger, too. Just as climbing captured his interest as a kid, now Guido was growing obsessed with flying, running and mountain biking. “The mountains have so much to offer. I usually go from day to day and pick the activity I feel is best suited for the conditions and the surroundings. I love the freedom to be able to choose the best activity in

“I absorbed climbing like a sponge,” says Guido of these years. “It became my major focus. All I could think about all day.” It wasn’t long before Guido was also climbing at a world-class level. By age 14, he had climbed up to 8b at Schleierwasserfall. Reaching new levels and higher grades encouraged Guido to test his skills on the World Cup competition circuit. At the Youth World Championships in Courmayer, he found himself fighting his way to an impressive fourth place finish. Yet being indoors was a strange experience for someone who grew up climbing in an outdoor context. To Guido, climbing is meant to be experienced outside: “My head was always somewhere else,” he says, referring to his time on the comp scene. “I couldn’t help but wonder what I was doing indoors when the sun was shining bright and I could be outside. With comp climbing, your results will be irrelevant and forgotten after one year. I made the decision to create memories that nobody could ever take away from me. Your own experiences and memories can’t be erased.” This decision to pursue personally meaningful experiences—to seek personal passion over points in a comp—steered Guido on a global odyssey to the most incredible locations in the world. He ventured to the Dolomites, Spain, Yosemite Valley, Pakistan. Patagonia, Norway, and all over Europe—always returning to his home turf in Wilder Kaiser area between trips.

“… I love the freedom to be able to choose the best activity in relation to what’s there, rather than being forced to do something that isn’t ideal.” relation to what’s there, rather than being forced to do something that isn’t ideal.” Guido’s child-like enthusiasm for his new sports— the places they took him, and the people they introduced him to—quickly helped Guido raise his level of ability in each discipline. But there’s just one major problem: What to do with all the new equipment?! Open up the back doors of his van, and you’ll see an impressive collection of gear that would rival the display of any fine outdoor mountain shop. Climbing gear nestles besides a mountain bike and biking gear. Paragliding equipment drapes over his running shoes. There’s spare bike tires, various helmets, and carabiners for numerous purposes. >>

Austria. Guido was born in Kitzbühel and spent his childhood years in Going, at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser.

“Keeping all this equipment in my van allows me the flexibility to just dive into an opportunity whenever, wherever. I can’t go back and change my clothes all the time. My apparel and footwear simply has to be in sync with what I do. I can save weight on my way up and can keep my options open once I’m at the top. I like doing my mountain runs with an ultra light paraglider strapped to my back. It intensifies my run and the thought of gliding down the mountain is the perfect motivation.” But it must be asked: Does doing too many sports at once make it impossible to truly perform at your highest level in each sport? Guido says no, insisting that all of his activities don’t compete with each other. Rather, they complement each other by providing a foundation of overall strength and stamina. The cardio from running improves his climbing endurance. The forearm strength from climbing improves his mountain biking. And the psychological challenge of paragliding and speed-flying improves his spirit and overall motivation in all four sports. “The gratification of gliding down the mountain you just conquered by foot is incredible,” he says. “Flying also gives me the chance to make the best of my downtime days.” Guido sums up being a versatile multi-sport athlete as an expression of his love of being outdoors, and using up every drop of time given to him each day. “For me it’s about becoming a better athlete every day, and spending as much time outdoors as I can.” And in Guido’s world, he sure can use as much time outdoors as possible.

GUIDO UNVARNISHED Guido was born on 26 September 1984 in Kitzbühel and spent his childhood years in Going, at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser. He regularly embarks on expeditions to remote parts of the world, including Patagonia, Pakistan, Norway, China, Morocco and Cuba, always looking for new ways to push himself and his limits. He refers to himself as an “allround alpinist“. Limiting himself to only one element doesn‘t suit the Tyrolean; in fact, he feels equally comfortable on rock, ice, snow or even in the air – and he excels on pretty much any turf. Among his many accolades in the world of sports, he has three-peated the 8b+ route known as Des Kaisers neue Kleider (first ascent by Stefan Glowacz in 1994) on Wilder Kaiser, one of the hardest multi-pitch climbs in the Alps, completed first ascents like the spectacular Feuertaufe 8b+ (Sonnwand/Lofer) together with Alexander Huber and some fast-paced ascents in Patagonia, such as the Cerro Torre via the Ferrari route. Also among his achievements are the following: Fitz Roy, Aguja Poincenot, Cerro Standhardt and the Aguja Guillaumet, the ascent of the Nameless Tower in Pakistan via the Eternal Flame route, some challenging ice climbs up to grade WI6+ and ambitious sport climbing up to 8c+. Today Guido lives with his girlfriend in St. Johann in Tyrol. He is a certified mountain and ski guide. He leads his own Alpine learning center, speed glides and mountain bikes with passion and yet still finds the time to hold lectures about his exploits and adventures. And if all of this weren‘t enough – he‘s expecting his first child in spring.

VERSATILITY IS THE KEY Do more with less. Do more in a day. All while expanding comfort zones. That’s what drove Tim Maud – Global Design Director Outdoor Apparel – in the process of designing the new Spring/Summer 15 terrex collection.

Tim, in recent years modern alpinism has become more and more athletic. What does that mean for your daily work as an apparel designer? In fact, our athletes are changing their activities. They’re doing more things in a day. They’re running, biking, climbing and even flying. Our aim is to produce versatile, lightweight garments with the maximum performance possible. We want our athletes to do all these multiple activities with less restriction, have more freedom to explore and to express themselves in the mountains. Our athletes … are our inspiration. Can you give us an example for that kind of inspiration? We have an athlete called Don Bowie. This guy intends to climb an 8,000 meter peak in less than 24 hours. To train for this he’s running and cycling. As an apparel designer, my job was to use innovative fabrics in an innovative manner and then construct them in a way that makes our new products incredibly light, incredibly versatile, durable and perfectly fitting for the use of the athlete.

Then people might say your products are good at all things but excellent at none, right? You might think that, but our goal for the Spring/ Summer 15 collection was to create versatile products without compromise that are the masters of everything. And our athletes’ feedback tells us that we have achieved it. How did you manage that? For the Skyclimb Top, for example, we combined the super high-performing fabric Polartec Power Dry High Efficiency with the new insulation fabric called Polartec Alpha and the most innovative Pertex Equilibrium to realize a whole new concept. By using these in a sandwich we’ve created a completely different garment that is wind-resistant, has great water resistance and active moisture management – in one piece. This is something that has not been done before. The athlete can put this on at the car park, run up the mountain, ski or bike down the mountain. Do more with less. Do more in a day. All while expanding comfort zones. That’s the versatility we’re talking about. >>

TERREX AND ATHLETES How do you interact with the adidas athletes in apparel development? We’re the athletic brand in the outdoors. terrex is for the athlete. So the interaction is really close. We have athletes like Don Bowie or Alex Luger, who are very product-focused. They have that conceptual thinking and give us highly qualitative and constructive feedback. For us it’s important to understand what these guys do: They go from relatively low altitude to relatively high altitude. And they go quickly. Traveling through temperature zones from 25 degrees to minus 5 degrees. But they don’t want

“… So you have to understand what products they need during their activities in those environments …” to change their clothes all the time. So you have to understand what products they need during their activities in those environments. Then we can build products that support them in whatever they’re doing. So versatility is the key. What is the most important part of your work … finding the best fabrics? Actually, we ask ourselves what we can do apart from using new fabrics. What we do is to engineer products. In all our pieces, we’ve done the best we can in terms of construction. For example, the terrex Skyclimb top has no tangible seams, it feels completely flat. The hems and the cuffs are bonded so there are no seams and no stitch lines. Seams, cut lines and stitching are always a point of abrasion on your skin, but also for external abrasion from a rucksack or jacket.

So the best garment would be made out of one single piece? That’s what we try to do. For our terrex agravic tee we’ve taken a 110-gram fabric, a merino wool polyester which is the best lightweight base layer fabric that we can get – and engineered the pattern to make it the most comfortable piece there is. One piece of fabric with only two seams. And the seams are taken away from any abrasion point, from the shoulders and the hips. It still has perfect arm lift, it still fits really close to the body … and it looks pretty cool. You’re working closely with the adidas FUTUR Team. How’s that collaboration? There’s a small team in Herzogenaurach, a larger one sitting in Portland, and the relationship is really good. They have been testing our terrex down blaze jacket to see how many benefits the baffle construction gives in terms of warmth. Every baffle is slightly oversized on the inside. That means that the stitch lines are covered when you wear the jacket. By this you don’t get any hot air escaping, which gives you a warmer product for the weight. Or a lighter product with the same amount of warmth, because we can trap more heat inside. The adidas FUTURE Team is testing these things, they have the machines and can prove that what we’ve done makes sense. What comes first – testing in the lab or testing in the field? We do it at the same time. If you can prove it in a lab it doesn’t necessarily mean that it works in the field. And vice versa. Sometimes you can feel differences in the mountains but you can’t replicate that in a lab. So we do our testing in conjunction. Are there also ideas that have been proven by the adidas FUTURE Team to make no sense? That can happen. But if you have an idea … try it! No matter how stupid it is. That’s the principle of evolution. Our nature is designed through millions of years of trial and error. So don’t predict! Try and don’t be afraid to fail.

Apart from the athletes and their activities: Is nature your main source of inspiration? As a designer your eyes are always open. You never switch off. You’re always trying to understand construction. You’re always looking for inspiration. Everywhere and anywhere. You look at trees. You look at cars. You look at bikes. You look at electronics. Something that we tried to really do for the

“… You’re always trying to understand construction. You’re always looking for inspiration …”

Tim Maud is 43 years old and studied Sports Science and Sports Performance Design in England. The passionate whitewater kayaker was a river guide in Kathmandu (Nepal) for three years and worked at several outdoor companies for 10 years. Since 2008, he has been working for adidas Outdoor and is now Global Design Director for outdoor apparel.

Spring/Summer 2015 collection was to embrace the space. We tried to get rid of unnecessary seams. Products that fit and work … but the construction is invisible. What are your favorite products? I love all of them … they are all my children! Any special children in the family? Well, we have some shorts that are under 70 grams, durable, water-repellent, wind-resistant – one of the lightest shorts on the market. For running, for climbing, for biking … whatever. And the terrex skyclimb top makes me very proud because it does enable athletes to do more. I am super-stoked that we managed to realize the concept of the different heat-sealing baffles. For me that is a game changer. I often compare it to the trolley bag. The trolley bag? Look … the suitcase existed for hundreds of years. The wheel for thousands of years. But it took some bright spot in the mid-90s to combine these two things to a trolley bag. That’s so easy. But it makes it different and totally new, more convenient and more performance orientated. Do you expect more innovations like this for the future? Yes. Which? Can’t tell you (laughs). Can you give us an impression? Okay, clothing has been made the same way since humans started making clothes. Even back in cavemen times they stitched furs together to create cloth. Today we’re sitting here in this room wearing stitched garments. So the construction has to change. Now we bond it. That’s new. But is that the smartest way? We engineer products with fewer seams. Is that the best way? Or is there a completely different way? I think there is. We just need to find the way to make it work in production. Maybe one day we’ll produce our clothes in something like a 3D printer? Could be something like this …

Solar Fusion Sunrise and Lemur’s cries echoed off the wall waking Mayan Smith-Gobat and me – our alarm clock for the past three days. Warmth washed over us as the sun crested the mountain tops.

Mayan shifted in her sleeping bag in a futile attempt to escape the overbearing heat which hit moments later. Giving up, she draped her head over the edge of the portaledge and watched the clouds drift lazily across the valley 300 meters below. After 3 days on the ground fixing line, being rained out by massive thunderstorms, hiking equipment to haul, and two nights sleeping on the wall, Mayan and I made significant progress to the base of the crux pitch. We were on track to claim the first free ascent on an open project going up Madagascar’s Tsaranoro Massif. In the last few moments of sunlight the day before, we unlocked the sequence of the crux pitch and fixed a rope to its base. Over a breakfast of soaked oats, stale bread, and cold coffee Mayan and I made plans for the day. “How’re you feeling?” Mayan asked. I checked my fingers – torn and bruised from the 300 meters of small crystalline granite below. “We’ll see what happens,” I sighed. >>

Mayan and Ben relax and enjoy their view of the landscape 300 meters above the ground.

Finger tip cracks and small razor blade holds greeted my sore stiff fingers. Small black and tan crystals bit my flesh and gouged my toes with every move. I grimaced in pain from the rough texture of the granite, but fought to push the sensation from my mind. Gradually, the pitch steepened and the entire route dropped below in a giant swooping arc. The exposure was worse than the previous walls I had been on; but I felt good. I glanced down 500 meters to the ground – confident (for once) and thought, ‘Ah yeah … I got this.’

“… I’m holding onto something that I can barely get my finger nails on!” To reach a familiar credit card width hold with my left hand I swung high onto a small foothold. Three meters above the last bolt, I moved quickly to another barely non-existent hold. As my hand touched the rock, my foot kicked violently into space, the entire weight of my body shock-loaded my arms. Letting out a shout of surprise I miraculously held on and brought my foot to a higher piece of rock. “Did a hold break?” I asked. “Yeah it did! Keep going!” Mayan encouraged.

“This is ridiculous!” Mayan shouted. “What?” I yelled. “I’m holding onto something that I can barely get my finger nails on!” For over an hour Mayan pushed for the chains. Patience was key to her success, and she moved with precision. Loose bits of rock trickled down the wall making her foot slip slightly; but she recovered regaining her composure. I lost sight of her of at small bulge in the wall and had no idea what to expect at this point. After another ten minutes a victorious, “Ye-ha!” flowed down the wall. She’d made it to the chains and I followed on top rope. The next pitch was the last of the route – to our surprise. I on-sighted, but as Mayan seconded the pitch I wondered, “How?” Grey granite waves rolled down the wall as Mayan navigated the textured bulges. Often there were no holds as she pressed her hands flat against the rock slightly off balance by its angle and used friction to inch her way toward the chains. It looked like she was climbing a glass wall as she searched for any indentation on the rock for a hand or foot. But she somehow held on and climbed the pitch clean.

Morning light shines on Tsaranoro Massif’s Eastern Face revealing the beauty of Madagascar. Shaken I questioned every hold as I became more and more fatigued. I fought the pump and reached the crux move tired, but determined. I gave it everything and stuck the delicate finger tip holds and gained my stance to clip the chains. Excited and off to a good start I brought Mayan up. “We can do this today,” Mayan said joining me. She cast off into the unknown. The wind had barely began to scrape across the wall as she moved delicately up the pitch. I was impressed as Mayan navigated the thin holds. Her feet gripped on impossibly small divots of rock and pushed as if she were on the biggest ledge in the world so she could reach the next hold. I cringed because I knew that her foot could blow at any point and send her skipping down the wall– any error and there would be no recovery. She really didn’t want to have to repeat a pitch.

Mayan joined me and we watched the setting sun paint the valley vibrant orange and red. Flames of color ignited the ground below giving the peaks around us a kaleidoscope of color, but it also let us know that darkness was coming. Exhausted and exhilarated we enjoyed our few precious moments watching the light fade before we rappelled. “We need to go,” I said as the sky darkened. We touched ground just as the stars began to shine and hiked back to camp. Over the course of six days, Mayan and I accomplished our goal. We claimed the first free ascent of the 14 pitch route we named Solar Fusion (8a).

Above Mayan bears down on small holds climbing the delicate arete pitch. At the bottom left Nine hours of cross country travel lands Mayan and Ben in Baobab Alley. The iconic trees dot the plains creating an exotic view. At the bottom right A long boat ride and waiting for high tide, Ben enjoys the breeze and rock above the Indian Ocean.

MAYAN SMITH-GOBAT Mayan grew up in the NZ mountains with a strong affinity to nature. At age 16, she began Alpine climbing, yet quickly shifted her focus to her true passion – the physical challenges of rock climbing. Since 2001 Mayan has dedicated herself to climbing, quickly becoming one of NZ’s best climbers and the first Kiwi woman to climb 5.14b/8c. Her focus soon shifted from bouldering and competition to excel in traditional climbing, free-climbing big walls and breaking speed records. Mayan loves to push her limits in the vertical world – exploring remote places and developing new routes on large, aesthetic rock faces.

BEN RUECK Ben grew up in the rural country side of western Colorado. His connection to the open spaces of the Colorado National Monument’s deserts and plateaus instilled a genuine curiosity for the great outdoors. At age 17 he found his passion in climbing. After obtaining his bachelor’s degree, Ben focused all of his energies on bouldering, putting up FA boulder problems ranging to V12. By age 25 he shifted his focus to ropes, climbing 5.13+ trad., 5.14 sport, and 5.13 big wall. He now travels the world searching for the most aesthetic lines to challenge him and pursue his passion.
