In my opinion, the computer is merely a tool, and the design comes from using quick hand drawings. But to disregard its potential for presentation purpose is definetly a disadvantage. Through my years of practicing landscape I tried to balance hand sketching and the use of digital rendering. AutoCAD Photoshop Ilustrator InDesign Sketch Up 3d Studio Max Arc GIS

STRATEGIC PLANNING

Photoshop Illustrator Indesign Sketch Up V-ray

The Rail Station has always been a symbol of the city, with a strategic pericentral localization, and a representation function. At the present time, both in America and Europe, there is a slow process of rehabilitation of railways system, admitting that it’s potential to stop the phenomena of urban sprawl and uncontrolled expantion of the city. _ 10

The Strategies at the european level have and will have consequences at the local level. The ulterior development that it may produce has already been recognized and evaluated in the reports of TOD (Transit-Oriented Development (in America), or in specialized magazines on the TSAD theme (Train Station Area Development, for Europe).

The research is proposing to establish the relation between the railway system and the green system, considering planning at the Metropolitan level of Bucharest to the redesign of historical railway stations. The detailed design area focuses on a former industrial area in decline and railway station of Progresul, which has an entry/exit status and proposes a new intermodal node with creative industries.

PRAHOVA VALLEY RECLAIM - BREAZA PARK Breaza, Romania School Project, Year 1 Master, 2013

LANDSCAPE D E S I G N

Breaza city is located in a Subcarpathian landscape, and is the first touristic city on a string of mountain resorts on the Prahova valley. The proposal of theme park, is part of a larger vision of a green spine along the Prahova river valley within the city of Breaza. The focus of the proposal is on the traditional Romanian practices such as pottery, sewing, glass making, _ 16

wood crafting. The hardscape of the design consists of traditional practices pavilions, or colored glass greenhouses and landart. Traditional motives inspired by traditional female clothing of Breaza are exposed through out the park in the form of wooden landmark sculptures. The steep topography of the valley, on which the park is laid out, is being

used as an asset. Many interesting viewpoints are proposed, with an over view of the river and the spread out city. At the lowest elevation of the topography, lies Prahova river. The bed of the river is currently concealed, so the intention is to re-expose the water circuit by designing a natural flooding area with connected water basins.

The project is the final project of the Bachelors Degree, and it concerns rehabilitating the forestry and fruit tree landscapes of the Geoagiu county, in Romania. Also, in the center of the strategic development of the region stands a former experimental fruit tree resort which used to uphold an impressive activity in the walnut trees research and pro_ 20

ductivity, due to the existing favorable biological, morphological and climatic conditions, while extending the city without urbanizing the area and promoting the specificity of it’s cultural landscape. The proposal, at the master plan level, was the ecological one, focusing more on the tourism and economic potential of the area in a sustainable

manner. The design of the ensemble is meant to promote the complementary functionalities of the research center. These include: commercial, hosting, exhibition garden, educational area. The “mini arboretum” garden has a metaphorical concept at it’s basis, identified by the idea of the walnut fruit. This means that the planting design resonates it.

Vacaresti artificial lake is an old abandoned project from the Communist era, in Bucharest, Romania. It is a very interesting place since nature has taken it’s course along for almost 25 years. Now there is a massive open wetlands with biodiversity of animal species and plants.

_ 28

The proposal integrates this space into the city life by transforming it into a park, but at the same time protect it’s untainted character.

The masterplan of the pier area is designed as a unit of planted vegetation with aesthetical, experimental and production purposes.

The part of the park that I focused represented the lake’s pier which is designed to be a planted and productive barrier, ensuring controlled access to the park.

At the same time it offers interesting view points and various activities for leisure and some commercial activities.

LANDSCAPE PLANNING

Bucharest is one of the European Capitals with the least green space per inhabitant. The resources and potential for creating new recreational space are most likely to be located in the vicinity of Colentina Lakes in the North of the city. The project consists of strategic planning of the green system of Colentina Lakes in Bucharest. The proposal _ 32

focuses on revitalizing the industrial areas and the unused areas with direct access or link to the Colentina river and it’s lakes. The proposal consists of regulation of green space typologies, emphasizing the recovery of the banks of Colentina river for leisure and recreational purposes. The proposal envisions a linkage between the available land for

conversion and existing parks into a emerald necklace. The objective would be to create a consistent and continuous spaces available for sports and outdoor activities and leisure, but also to protect the ecological value of the lakes. Productive plantations such as energy willow, orchards and forests have been proposed for preserving the lakes.

REABILITATION OF JOHANNES HONTERUS SQUARE Brasov, Romania Competition , 2011

U R B A N D E S I G N

Photoshop Illustrator Hand drawing Sketch Up V-ray

The project was part of urban competition of the renewal of an medieval square in Brasov city, in Romania. The proposed interventions are minimal, introducing a new simple black and white pavement, while extending the square through public commercial functions.

_ 36

The vegetation is proposed to be integrated discreetly in the square as an addition to an existing alignment of trees. The simple design is based on the antithesis between light and shade or between interior and exterior, or simply the classical and symbolically contrast of black and white, while revolving around spirituality.

The concept of light vs shade from the inside out of the church, symbolically suggesting that the light comes from within, is the driving force for the the design of pavement. The conceptual sketches show this idea of light and shade or white vs black.

The vegetation offers a variety of native shrubs and small and medium size tree species, due to the restricted space of the property.
