East Branch Friends of the Arts features a wide range of concerts
I
n 1996, trustees Linda Fisher, Sam Fisk, Ruth Kuhfahl, Mary Lawrence, Lelia Matthews, Peter Proud and Barbara Strowger, with Lulu Brown as Honorary Chairman, began East Branch Friends of the Arts. Peter Proud suggested the name for the organization and Linda Fisher created the logo. Based in the town of Keene, East Branch Friends of the Arts is a community-based, non-profit group dedicated to supporting and promoting the visual and performing arts; expanding opportunities of involvement in arts events for residents and visitors; developing and showcasing the community’s rich musical, artistic, literary heritage; and instilling a love of the arts and learning in children. Past and current activities include play readings, poetry readings, chamber music concerts, artists studio tours, dramatic presentations, snow sculpture contests, photography contests and jazz concerts. EBFA welcomes the support and suggestions of the year round and seasonal residents of Keene, and those of our many visitors. East Branch Friends of the Arts is proud to present this season’s featured concerts: Gabrielle Stravelli Quartet, Cole Quest and the City Pickers, Berta Rojas, and Honeysuckle. Gabrielle Stravelli Quartet June 18, 8 p.m., Recovery Lounge Gabrielle is a wonderful jazz singer and songwriter from NYC with an impressive resume, including great reviews in the NY Times and Downbeat Magazine. She has performed extensively with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and has appeared around the world as part of the “American Music Abroad” program. Her band features two great musicians with North Country connections; bassist Pat O’Leary and drummer Michael Benedict, both of whom attended the Crane School of Music.

Cole Quest and the City Pickers Aug. 20, 8 p.m., Keene Valley Congregational Church
Cole Quest and The City Pickers are a group of New York City musicians connected by friendship and a love of bluegrass. Cole Quest, grandson of the folk icon Woody Guthrie, has brought together a collection of eclectic pickers who have gained recognition on the local scene. Performing both Quest’s original tunes as well as traditional favorites, The City Pickers bring their special brand of high-spirited talent to the stage, with up-beat, knee slapping energy and a high lonesome sound that’ll leave you wanting more. They’ve shared the stage with great musicians such as Sarah Jaroz, Blind Boy Paxton, Tony Trischka, and many others, and have been featured in leading publications like Bluegrass Today, American Songwriter, and more. Bluegrass legend Tony Trischka described the group’s first release: “The overall sound is wonderfully organic, with rich trio and lead singing, solid instrumental picking, and a repertoire that keeps you coming back for more.” Journalist and producer Frank Matheis wrote: “The ensemble is packed with individual talent and each musician (Continued on page 10)
