Volunteer of the Year: Larry Brockway
Ambulance Service volunteer recognized for 23 years of service
By LAUREN YATES Staff Writer LAKE
PLACID
It’s
2 a.m. and a pager goes off
Someone in Lake Placid is in need of emergency medical attention, and odds are high that it’s Larry Brockway, a volunteer driver and member of the Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service, who is on his way to help Brockway, a Lake Placid native, is the Enterprise and Lake Placid News Volunteer of the Year for 2023, selected for his 23 years of service with the LPVAS
Brockway, 53, has worked as a “jack of all trades” at North Elba’s transfer station for 32 years He’d been on the job nearly 10 years when an ambulance squad vol-
unteer approached him and asked if he wanted to join the LPVAS, too After a little pressing, Brockway gave the ambulance service a try.
“I actually enjoyed it, and I’ve been there ever since,” he said
For the last 10 years, Brockway has served as the LPVAS president But when (Continued on Page 6)

‘Volunteering is good for your soul’

asked about his individual contributions to the squad, Brockway stresses that the LPVAS is successful because of the teamwork behind its operations. LPVAS members ranging from from 18 years old to more than 70 years old come together to fill out state paperwork, respond to calls, serve big events like the Ironman Lake Placid triathlon and generally keep the LPVAS going through tough times.
“It’s kind of like a big group of people that all help each other out,” Brockway said Even though the LPVAS is made up of around 80% paid workers now, Brockway said, he’s one of the dozen or so volunteers left in the squad. That’s by choice he said he comes from a generation that was brought up to help people without expecting anything in return, and he’s all about serving his community
“Plus, volunteering is good for your soul,” he said Brockway enjoys the job as a lifelong Lake Placid resident, he said he likes knowing most everyone he sees on calls as well as taking care of tourists or people who are just passing through He said he’s seen almost everything during his 23 years, though he still hasn’t seen a baby being born That’s a bit of an unspoken goal for all LPVAS workers, he said they see people dying and suffering all the time while on the job, but they rarely get to see the start of a life.
“That’s, like, the highest
honor,” he said Working with the LPVAS came with an early perk of meeting his future wife Heather Borachok was working as an ER tech at the hospital when Brockway joined the squad, and she sometimes joined the LPVAS on calls when the squad was short-handed Brockway can still recall an early morning at around 2 a m during his first year with the LPVAS when Borachok called him from the ER and said, “Hey, I’ve got a question for you. Are you ever going to ask me out on a date?”
They’ve been together ever since, building a family with two daughters and a son.
Borachok nominated Brockway as volunteer of the year. He joked that the nomination was one of the many “little secrets” she likes to keep from him He didn’t know he was chosen as volunteer of the year until reached by the Enterprise on Feb. 20 or that Borachok would gift herself a puppy this past Christmas.
“Many nights he responds to the citizens of our incredible town and gives them friendly, caring and gentle care He does this without complaint or reservation,” Borachok wrote of Brockway “Many know him and love him. He does this, not for the glory, not for the recognition, but because of the generous spirit he has ” Borachok, who is now an RN and still serves with the LPVAS, told the Enterprise about Brockway’s work ethic with the LPVAS that he often responds to calls even when he’s not on duty and his diligence in volunteering with the squad, especially through their family’s
hardships over the last year
Brockway and Borachok’s youngest daughter, Miranda, suffered a nearly-fatal motorcycle accident after being t-boned by a car while riding last summer. Several parts of her body were broken in the crash, including her neck and her pelvis, rendering her unable to walk for months. She required constant care, and Brockaway and Borshack were always by her side on a rotating basis.
Miranda’s survival after the crash was remarkable in itself, according to Brockway, who said she came close to death a couple of times in recovery. Even more remarkable was the fact that, while in recovery, Miranda learned that she was pregnant during the crash and that her baby had survived, too
On Feb 20, Brockaway said Miranda was expecting to have her baby which appeared in perfect health on ultrasound scans on Feb 24
Throughout Miranda’s most intense months of recovery, Brockaway didn’t miss a beat with the LPVAS. Because he works the midnight to 6 a m shift, he could keep volunteering while looking after Miranda He said LPVAS members often came to help Miranda up the stairs or into the shower, too
Now that Miranda is anywhere from moments to days away from giving birth, Brockaway might finally get to fulfill his dream of seeing a baby being born while volunteering for the LPVAS.

Tales of a bell ringer
Charles Blackman rings in the holiday season with music, donations and stories
By AARON MARBONE Staff Writer
TUPPER LAKE Seeing Charles Blackman
bundled up outside the Shaheen’s IGA grocery store, listening to Christmas tunes while he rings the Salvation Army bell, is a sign of the Christmas season in Tupper Lake.
Blackman has been donating his time to the cause for 18 consecutive years from Thanksgiving Day to Christmas Eve in all sorts of weather
Every year he helps collect a few thousand dollars in donations, whether it be pocket change or huge jugs of $75 in quarters and dimes He said the Salvation Army collects an average of $4,000 in a season in town The money all stays local, he said, at charities like the Tupper Lake Food Pantry.
Blackman’s neighbor, Russell Eidhammer, said he is impressed with his neighbor’s annual selfless act and wanted to give him some recognition.
Eidhammer moved to town five years ago and became Blackman’s neighbor They see each other about every day walking on the road or visiting their homes
“They don’t make people like this anymore,”
Eidhammer said of Blackman
Blackman is the type of guy to answer the phone with a “I’m doing marvelous! Top shelf.”
Blackman moved to town from New Jersey in 2003 He started ringing the bell in 2005 The bell ringing is a tradition he looks forward to.
“My little motto is ‘The more we do for others, the more we do for ourselves,’” Blackman said.
“There are no negatives on it ”
It all started when he saw an ad in the paper and knew he was qualified.
“As long as it takes no skill and no intelligence, I can handle it,” Blackman said
But it does take a hearty spirit to stand in the cold for hours for days
Eidhammer said Blackman is like the U.S. Postal Service he’s there “sleet or snow ”
“You know, my layers have layers,” Blackman said.
“I get to listen to Christmas music, talk to nice people and hopefully I’m helping somebody That’s a nice way to spend four or five hours in the morning,” Blackman said “It makes the day go very fast

and so many nice things happen that it’s an extremely enjoyable experience.”
“One year led to another, to another, to another,” Blackman said
Now it’s become a habit.
He usually goes from around 8:30 a m to 1 p m The morning is always the busiest at the store He’s there six days a week Monday through Saturday He’s got no shortage of Christmas music, with a rotating collection of around 15 CDs
He’s got Anne Murray, Bing Crosby and Cumberland Gap Reunion’s “Smokey Mountain Christmas” in the mix, as well as “Peter Pierogi’s 30 Christmas Polka Favorites,” what Blackman calls “a real toe-tapper ”
One year, a man he had never met stopped by with a gift a homemade Christmas mixtape. The man’s hobby is making CDs, Blackman said, and he had noticed the local bell ringer’s affinity for Christmas CDs.
Every year since, he’s given Blackman another mixtape
“I tell him that I start the day, every day, with one of his Christmas CDs,” Blackman said
In 18 years on the job, Blackman said he’s seen a lot of funny, heartwarming and thought-provoking moments.
“I write every day, some little touching experience that goes by,” Blackman said He’s got a whole journal full of them. “Not a week goes by that I don’t get choked up ”
“If I ever got some energy I’d write a book,” he added. “‘Tales of the Bell Ringer’ or something.”
For a couple years there was a school bus that would go by and the kids would all wave at me and I’d ring the bell and the bus driver would beep the horn,” Blackman said.
A few years ago, the students collected change throughout the weeks they saw him and on the last day before their holiday break, the bus made an extra stop outside the grocery store so a student could run out and deliver a jar full of change to Blackman
Some people pull up, put change in, but don’t go in the store.
“I think that’s really nice, for them to take the time to do that when they’re not even shopping,” Blackman said
When parents give change to to their kids to hand him, he tips the kettle so they can reach Blackman remembers one boy of about 3 coming up to him with a clenched fist and plunking in a quarter and a nickle
“He smiled and walked away,” Blackman said “And his mother yelled ‘Put it all in!’”
The boy came back and dropped a dime and three pennies in
“I know that he is going to be successful somewhere in life, but the question is, is it going to be on the right or the wrong side of the law?” Blackman wondered
He gets a kick when people come out of the store and apologize, saying something like “I have only plastic on me today.”
“They don’t have to say anything!” Blackman said “I just think that it’s really kind of cute that they think they have to apologize ”
Blackman said with the “good Lord willing,” he’ll continue to ring the bell for the Salvation Army for many more years to come.

Cool with the kids
Rachel Daby provides children safe outlet for energy
By PARKER O’BRIEN Sports Editor
Rachel Daby, a Vermontville native, comes from a family that loves to volunteer
Her grandmother used to own the St Paul’s food pantry in Vermontville before she passed away. Her aunt now owns the food pantry So it’s no shock that she loves to make a difference in this world, too Daby, who now resides in Essex Junction, Vermont as she attends Saint Michael’s College, has been working at a Days Inn for some time now She originally started working part-time before eventually taking on a full-time role at the hotel But over the summer, Daby started to see an influx of children running around the hotel The children weren’t staying as typical guests they were staying as part of a group of families being housed at the hotel through Vermont’s transitional housing program
Days Inn has a contract with the state of Vermont to shelter people without homes to eventually get them into stable housing The program works through Vermont’s Emergency Housing and Transitional Housing program
“A lot of the kids were out of school and stuff like that and they were just running around and up and down the halls,” Daby said “They were just trying to have fun, but it’s a hotel and it’s not in a supercute, friendly area, so there aren’t that many chances for them to get their energy out ”
Daby said it was hard on the staff to continue to do their jobs with children running around because they were still taking in regular guests at the same time She added that it wasn’t super business-friendly.
“It sounds terrible to say,” Daby said, “but it wasn’t great to have kids running around the halls and sometimes they would accidentally trip guests and stuff like that They just needed a safe place for everybody to get their energy out.”
After talking with the hotel’s manager, she decided to reach out to a program at Saint Michael’s called Mobilization of Volunteer Efforts (MOVE). The program helps fill some of the community’s unserved needs by creating volunteer groups
“Saint Mike’s has a really big volunteer campus and it’s actually a huge mission of the Edmund teachings, who founded the campus,” Daby said. “So, I just knew of the volunteer efforts of Saint Mike’s ”
Since September, MOVE has come to the hotel once a week to play supervised games and activities with the children Daby said the children absolutely love the program.
“During the week, they’ll be like, ‘Oh it’s happening this week right?’ and they’ll tell me about every-
(Provided photo)
thing that has gone on some of the weeks,” Daby said “I have gone with them and they just have a great time.”
She said that some of the children have even made friends with the other children at the hotel
“So when they are hanging out outside of the room or outside of the program,” she said “Instead of being groups of siblings, they are all friends with each other which is so awesome to see.”
When the program first started, Daby said she was heavily involved
“I would go over with them and stuff that way they would have somebody that they are comfortable with and that they knew,” Daby said. “After a while, the volunteers really had it in hand and I wasn’t needed as much So now I just kind of make sure of everything that goes in the school day and keep the volunteer groups updated with numbers and things ”
Daby said its been absolutely rewarding to know that the children have a safe place to get their energy out
“It genuinely makes me feel good to see those kids have a good time,” she said “The hotel is not always a happy place as much as I’d like to say that it is Things get pretty serious or pretty scary sometimes. So it’s really good to just see the kids relax and have fun in a safe environment ”
While Daby, who graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 2020, said she isn’t quite sure what the Saranac Lake community would need in terms of a program like this, but she added that it would be helpful for other areas to have something similar.
“It’s only had positive effects and there hasn’t been a single negative effect since the program,” Daby said
