LASTING CONSERVATION SINCE 1984
ANNUAL REPORT 2017
ABOUT THE ADIRONDACK LAND TRUST MISSION Founded in 1984, the Adirondack Land Trust protects farms and forests, undeveloped shoreline, scenic vistas and other lands contributing to the quality of life of our communities as well as the wildness and rural character of the Adirondacks.

VISION We work to fulfill the promise of the Adirondack Park as a place of resilient lands, waters and communities. LAND TRUST POWER ALT is one of 1,000 land trusts working across the United States. Land trusts harness three fundamental values: private initiative, community cooperation and a deep connection to the land. American land trusts voluntarily conserve nearly 2 million acres per year.

The Adirondack Land Trust works to protect places people love, and places that are important to the lasting integrity of the Adirondack Park. Whether farms or forests, canoe carries or wild shorelines, vistas or wildlife habitat—all of these places matter, and all deepen the connection between Adirondack communities and their landscape.

Thanks to our supporters and partners, the Adirondack Land Trust has protected 23,032 acres since its founding in 1984. This annual report highlights how ALT empowers private citizens to work together to conserve lands, waters and places that are important to communities. This is a momentous time for the Adirondacks. Communities are embracing land and water protection as integral to their well-being and as a path to economic sustainability, and they are recognizing that conservation plays an important role in reducing the impacts and costs of climate change. As a result, the opportunity to protect essential lands and waters is literally multiplying. This is also an exciting time for the Adirondack Land Trust. Having shared Mike Carr, executive director (left), and staff and resources with the Adirondack Bill Paternotte, chair (right). Chapter of The Nature Conservancy since 1988, we became a fully independent entity again this year. Our mission remains the same: to protect working farms and forests, undeveloped shoreline, scenic vistas and other lands contributing to the quality of life of our communities as well as the wildness and rural character of the Adirondacks. But to fulfill this mission and honor our obligation to the communities we serve, ALT must increase its capacity to respond to these critical opportunities. The need is clear and urgent. We are currently in confidential negotiations on eight separate land-protection projects spanning 3,667 acres and valued at $2.9 million. We look forward to reporting to you upon successful protection of these places in the coming year. This report illustrates how important your support is to keeping the Adirondacks a place of clean waters, abundant wildlife, vast forests and vibrant communities. Thank you for all you do on our behalf.

Land
Impact:

Many projects accomplish several goals. By acquiring the 238-acre Glenview preserve in Harrietstown last year, for example, ALT protected a scenic vista, safeguarded the water quality of one of the largest boreal bogs in the Northeast and kept open the possibility of restoring grazing lands important to the viability of a small organic dairy.
Since 1984, the Adirondack Land Trust has worked with landowners and communities to conserve 23,032 acres — and counting. Land trusts accept donations of land, purchase land, negotiate voluntary conservation agreements on land and care for privately conserved lands in perpetuity. The Adirondack Park is a model for the world of how people and nature can thrive together. Larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier and Grand Canyon national parks combined, the park contains 85 percent of the wilderness in the East as well as 102 small towns and villages. We work with New York State and other partners to ensure that large forests remain intact, streams flow clear and cool, wildlife have room to roam, and communities thrive in harmony with protected lands. Facing page: © ALT/Emily Landry; left: © Larry Master
Lands that we decide to protect must: 1. Sustain our rural economies through working farms and forests and the ecosystem services provided by protected lands. 2. Link people to the land by protecting the Adirondack Park’s natural aesthetics, and increasing community connections to the natural areas that surround them. 3. Protect habitat for native plants and animals. 4. Provide a hedge against climate change, for the benefit of natural and human communities.
5
Water
Impact:
The boundary of the Adirondack Park is commonly known as the Blue Line—but with 3,000 lakes and ponds, and 30,000 miles of rivers and streams, there’s just as much blue inside. Thanks to more than a century of conservation action, many of these waters still provide habitat for native trout and clean drinking water, and they are less impacted by invasive species and fertilizers than waters elsewhere in the Northeast. Below: Bog River © Carl Heilman II. Right: Great blue herons © Larry Master.
6
Forested shorelines act as sponges to absorb stormwater, provide shade to keep rivers and lakes cool, and provide habitat onshore and off. They play a major role in strengthening the Adirondacks’ resilience to climate change and invasive species. The Adirondack Land Trust is currently working on projects that would protect shoreline on the Ausable River, Sacandaga River, Upper Saranac Lake, Lake Champlain and three ponds in the central Adirondacks. In addition to other ponds and stretches of lakeshore, ALT has previously protected wild sections of the Ausable, Bog, Boquet, Oswegatchie and Upper Hudson rivers. Communities
All across the Adirondacks, people are working together to conserve fields, farms, vistas and trails close to home. They bring energy, creativity and local knowledge, and it is a privilege to work with these individuals and other partners to protect the places we all value. The Adirondack Land Trust works with farmers to help them provide healthy food—we currently hold conservation easements on 20 farms. We work with communities to provide trails that connect them to nature. We work with landowners to protect shorelines and productive forests. Land conservation protects drinking water quality, generates revenue from outdoor recreation, reduces the intensity of flooding and generates jobs by keeping forests and farms working.
Northern Forest Canoe Trail paddler Emily Rosser, of Cambridge, MA, pulls her kayak over Indian Carry, the portage that connects Stony Creek Ponds to Upper Saranac Lake. Adirondack Land Trust conserved the 36-acre property and cut the portage trail in the 1980s, and helped NFCT improve the trail in 2016. The NFCT extends 740 miles from Old Forge, NY, to Fort Kent, ME. Š Mike Lynch

Conservationist of the Year Mike Carr In November 2016, after 17 years as shared executive director of both the Adirondack Land Trust and the Adirondack Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, Mike Carr transitioned to full-time executive director of ALT. This year the Adirondack Council honored Mike as Conservationist of the Year for his work with environmental organizations, community leaders, landowners and New York State to protect 340,000 acres of the Adirondack Park. One of Mike’s friends and partners, former commissioner of the New York Department of Environmental Conservation Joe Martens, wrote to congratulate Mike. An excerpt from Joe’s letter: I will reflect for a moment on why you have been able to accomplish so much. First, you are passionate about the Adirondack Park, all of it, from hamlets to wilderness. Second, you may not have been born here, but you are a local. You fish, you hunt, and you tell tall tales about both. You are a volunteer fireman. You understand the challenges of living in the park and the interconnectedness of economy and environment. Third, except for the fishing and hunting stories, you are the straightest shooter I know. Thank you and congratulations. — Joe Martens

People-powered Conservation The Hyson Family Chris Hyson’s great-grandparents, George and Katharine Notman, came to Keene Valley in the late 1800s; they loved the valley and acquired substantial acreage here. Over the years, many of the Notman holdings have been dispersed to the community—the site of Keene Central School, for instance, is the former Notman farm. Chris’s parents, Winifred and Charles Hyson, honored their family’s wishes to maintain some of their land as Forever Wild when they chose to gift 78 acres, including Little Round Top Mountain, to the Adirondack Land Trust for later transfer to the Forest Preserve. Chris and his wife, Audrey, seen here on Baxter Mountain with Little Round Top in the background, continue the family legacy today by supporting land trust work in the Adirondacks.

Public-Private Power The Adirondack Land Trust (ALT) was honored to receive two New York State Conservation Partnership Program grants in 2017: $30,000 to increase our conservation impact as ALT relaunches as an independent organization, and $10,000 to begin care and management of Glenview Preserve in the Town of Harrietstown. The funding was awarded by the Land Trust Alliance of New York and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The state’s Environmental Protection Fund provided the grants, and generous private donors provided a match.
