Progress & a skilled team with deep roots in Adirondack communities and the know-how to achieve conservation results that endure
We are pleased to present the Adirondack Land Trust’s 2018 annual report, which recaps our first full year of operation as an independent organization since 1988. Thanks to you and many others committed to making a difference in the Adirondacks, it has been a successful year.
Mike Carr, executive director (left), and Bill Paternotte, chair (right).
Since 1984, when the Land Trust was founded, we’ve protected 23,637 acres of farms, forests, trails, vistas and wildlife habitat.
We added two very special tracts to our portfolio this year: • Four Peaks, Wilmington & Jay: 600 acres that will expand Wilmington Wild Forest and the economic impact of trails. • Spruce Hill Vista, Keene: 5 acres at the heart of an irreplaceable view that also contains 1,000 feet of wild river shoreline. Throughout the Adirondack Land Trust’s 34-year history, we have remained laser-focused on conserving the lands and waters that people love— places that improve quality of life for our communities and contribute to the wildness and rural character of the Adirondack Park. We are now at work on 10 additional sites totaling 5,000 acres. At the same time, we are laying a strong organizational foundation for fulfillment of our mission over the long term. Through your support of our annual fund, we have been able to build a skilled team with deep roots in Adirondack communities and the know-how to achieve conservation results that endure. Over the past year, this support has been transformative. In 2017, we relaunched with five staff after a 30-year partnership with The Nature Conservancy; today we have a headquarters in Keene, a full-time team of seven, and we are searching for an eighth—a stewardship specialist to help care for privately protected lands. In addition: • We are pursuing Land Trust Alliance accreditation, to verify high standards for conservation and nonprofit management. • Our balance sheet exceeds $10 million in assets, which consist primarily of conservation lands and endowment funds. • We’re preparing a new strategic plan to guide our future work. In short, we are in a position of strength and poised to do more. Thank you again for all you do to keep the Adirondacks a place of clean waters, abundant wildlife, vast forests and vibrant communities.

Land Impact
The Adirondack Land Trust works with landowners and communities to conserve diverse and productive lands that: 1
Sustain our rural economies through working farms and forests and the ecosystem services provided by protected lands.
2
Link people to the land by protecting the Adirondack Park’s natural aesthetics and community connections to wildlands.
3
Protect habitat for native plants and animals.
4
Provide a hedge against climate change, for the benefit of people and nature.

Over the past year we’ve invested $646,496 in land, including the purchase of Four Peaks, a 600-acre tract straddling Wilmington and Jay. The acquisition maintains intact forest between Bassett Mountain, Wainwright Mountain, Ebenezer Mountain and Rattlesnake Knob. It also connects to Wilmington Wild Forest’s Beaver Brook tract, opening potential to expand a popular destination for mountain biking, trail running, hiking and hunting.

Water Impact
Land plays a direct role in the water quality of our rivers, lakes and streams, and land trusts play a direct role in protecting this resource. The Adirondack Land Trust has conserved wild shoreline on Cranberry Lake, Loon Lake, Osgood Pond, the St. Regis lakes and Upper Saranac Lake, as well as the Ausable, Boquet, Oswegatchie and Hudson rivers. Maintaining forests and wetlands along these shores absorbs runoff and keeps waters cool and clean for fish and recreation— and communities value the environmental and economic benefits

of this conservation. In Newcomb, for example, we help the town care for three miles along the Upper Hudson, where we hold a conservation easement that prohibits logging and building near the river. “It’s undeveloped and remote, a special place protected for future generations,” says town councilman Dave Olbert, who owns Cloud-Splitter Outfitters. The Adirondack Land Trust is currently working on projects that would protect shoreline on the Sacandaga River, Upper Saranac, and three ponds in the central Adirondacks; and 3.5 miles of streams, 155 acres of wetlands and five ponds at a partnership site in the northeast Adirondacks. A conservation easement helps keep water cool and clean on three miles of the Hudson River.
7
Community Impact
8
There is power in partnering with communities. Even small projects, such as trails that link people to protected lands, can bring positive change for all who live and visit here.

In the Champlain Valley, the Adirondack Land Trust has begun to rebuild the well-loved trails at our Coon Mountain Preserve. Countless local children have reached their first summit on this mile-long hike, which delivers views of farmlands, woodlands, the Adirondack High Peaks and Green Mountains of Vermont. Stewardship means more than owning land—it also means caring for it. We established the preserve in 1991 through a swap with a timberland owner, and have since expanded it to 378 acres. But increasing use means we need to shore up the trail to ensure it remains a vital recreational resource.
Other activities: • Working with High Peaks town officials on land-protection options to disperse trailhead crowding. • Working with an Essex County town to protect land surrounding its drinking-water source. • Partnering with 20 Champlain Valley farmers to help sustain the agrarian land base through conservation easements. • Advocating for a 2017 constitutional amendment that created a land bank allowing communities to make vital infrastructure improvements otherwise blocked by Forest Preserve. Above: One of 20 ALT-protected farms encompassing 7,363 acres producing milk, apples, beef, hay and grains. Left: Wilderness Property Management, an Adirondack-based business, clears a new section of the Hidden Valley Trail at Coon Mountain Preserve.

Public-Private Power The Adirondack Land Trust received a two-year grant of $80,000 from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Land Trust Alliance through the New York State Conservation Partnership Program, plus a $40,000 private matching grant from Annette Merle-Smith. Together, the grants allow the land trust to create the new position of stewardship specialist. Statewide, 70 grants totaling $2.29 million funded through New York’s Environmental Protection Fund leveraged an additional $2.3 million in private and local funding to support land trust projects that protect farmland, wildlife habitat and water quality; enhance public access for outdoor recreation; and conserve open-space areas that are important for community health and economic development.

Why We Volunteer By Roman and Leslie Kucharczyk In 2016 we moved to Keene from southeastern Pennsylvania, after spending several years slowly building our future retirement home here. Our retirement plans have only partially succeeded, but we have certainly enjoyed getting settled in our new home. In August 2017 we saw this post online: “Looking for handy volunteers— If anyone has free time to help the Adirondack Land Trust assemble filing cabinets and shelves, we’d love some help.” We have lots of experience building and fixing things, and we enjoy assembling cabinets and shelves more than computer spreadsheets. So this seemed like a perfect opportunity to meet new people, learn more about the area and volunteer for a worthy cause. We believe in preserving nature at the local level, and we appreciate that we are able to live in this beautiful area because others have already done so. The staff is friendly, engaging and generous, and quickly discovered that a plate of cookies will keep us coming back. The Adirondack Land Trust is strengthened by volunteers who take care of preserves, stuff and stamp envelopes, and help us put furniture together. If you’d like to pitch in, please contact Nancy Van Wie, director of philanthropy, (518) 576-2400, nancy.vanwie@adirondacklandtrust.org.

Sources and Uses of Funds The information presented here is based on unaudited financial statements for the 2018 fiscal year (July 1, 2017–June 30, 2018). These graphs are intended to provide timely information, but they are not a substitute for audited financial statements, available by writing to our office or to the New York State Office of the Attorney General, Charities Bureau, 120 Broadway, New York, NY 10271.
