LASTING CONSERVATION SINCE 1984
ANNUAL REPORT 2019
Our board and staff regularly re-evaluate our responsibilities and LASTING CONSERVATION SINCE 1984 opportunities to address some of the Adirondacks’ most pressing challenges. This year the Adirondack Land Trust updated our mission and vision statements, earned Land Trust Alliance national accreditation, and revised our strategic plan (page 8).
Mission
To forever conserve the forests, farmlands,
waters and wild places that advance the quality of life of our
communities and the ecological integrity of the Adirondacks.
Vision
The Adirondacks thrive as a living model of
how people embrace and respect the natural world. Our communities benefit from wild lands, clean water, clean energy, working forests, family farms and outdoor recreation. The Adirondack Park—larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier and Grand Canyon national parks combined—grows ever more vital in a changing climate, inspiring new and diverse advocates for conservation.
LEGACY AND JOY
O
ur mission at the Adirondack Land Trust encourages us to take a long-term perspective, as so much of our work involves protecting lands and waters in perpetuity. Accordingly, the word legacy comes to mind. In particular, we think about the Adirondack legacy that we inherited from our ancestors and that we will leave to our children and grandchildren. In my own case, the legacy started with my great-grandfather, who built a camp on Schroon Lake in the early 1900s. Although I never knew him, I received my first Adirondack exposure there at the tender age of three. I spent the next 15 summers at Schroon Lake with my grandparents, and by my The key is for each teenage years was totally hooked on of us to be involved. hiking and other Adirondack joys. Today, my wife Nan and I are incredibly Collectively, we can fortunate to have three wonderful make a real difference. children (with equally wonderful spouses) and seven loving grandchildren. Our extended family of 15 spends considerable time in the mountains, enjoying the outdoor activities made possible by millions of acres of protected lands and thousands of miles of wild streams and rivers. Seven of us, including three of our grandchildren, are 46ers, having summited each of the Adirondack peaks over 4,000 feet, and others are well along in their quests. Among my most treasured moments are the hikes on which we’ve shared a sense of community, excitement, perseverance, and, yes, occasional pain and exhaustion, all amidst the beauty of the wild. It’s been hugely satisfying to introduce my family to hiking, fishing and other outdoor pursuits over what are now three generations (actually six, including my ancestors). Even more gratifying is knowing that they, in turn, will take similar delight in sharing these pleasures with their descendants. Being in nature gives us peace and adds balance and perspective to our lives. (Left to right) Emma Paternotte, Jack Paternotte and Brooke Wise hiking with their grandfather Bill Paternotte.

In order for this legacy to be experienced by future generations, I feel a personal obligation to do my part to ensure that our lands and waters are passed on in the same—or better—condition than we found them. My particular passion, the Adirondack Land Trust, has a meaningful and measurable impact on the quality of life in the mountains we love, but there are many other ways to perpetuate our legacy. Some help protect fragile alpine plants, while others spend time encouraging our elected representatives to appropriate funds to combat invasive species. The key is for each of us to be involved. Collectively, we can make a real difference. As I reflect on my personal commitment, I have to admit that it’s partly self-serving. By being involved now, before it’s too late to make a difference, I help make it possible for our children and grandchildren to share the same sense of discovery that I did as a child. As I see them pass this legacy to their loved ones, it gives me tremendous joy and fulfillment.

Places protected
Eagle Mountain Wilderness Preserve We’ve joined with other land trusts to protect a rare 2,434-acre expanse of wild streams and ponds, low mountains and mature forest in the Champlain Valley. “In contrast to the great wilderness areas of the central and western Adirondacks, the easternmost region of the Adirondack Park has fewer forever wild landscapes,” said Jon Leibowitz, executive director of Northeast Wilderness Trust, which purchased the land in Essex County, near Keeseville. The Adirondack Land Trust will hold a conservation easement on the land to help ensure its wilderness attributes are maintained forever. “We love the scale and wildness of this for the Champlain Valley, where most of our work has focused on farms,” said Mike Carr, executive director of the Adirondack Land Trust. “This is private forever wild land that will soon be open to the public for hiking and other outdoor experiences. Also, we love that we are just one of several partners helping to protect and manage this special place, leveraging the strengths of all involved.” Other partners include Champlain Area Trails and Open Space Institute. Eagle Mountain Preserve protects the headwaters of the North Branch of the Boquet River. Peregrine falcons nest on the cliffs of Eagle Mountain.

Thank you! Your support has helped the Adirondack Land Trust conserve 26,628 acres at 90 sites to date. We are now working to complete five projects to protect more than two miles of shoreline, including a wild river, a family farm and a children’s camp.

Moxham Mountain The Adirondack Land Trust purchased 250 acres of Moxham Mountain adjoining the 91,854-acre Vanderwhacker Mountain Wild Forest. “We are extraordinarily grateful for our collaboration with the Adirondack Land Trust, which will preserve Moxham Mountain for all time,” said Mary Brassel Zack, who grew up in the Adirondacks and now lives in Pennsylvania, and whose parents bought the land in the 1950s. “This Adirondack landmark will remain forever undeveloped and beautiful; eventually, when it is transferred to the Adirondack Forest Preserve, it will be accessible to those who want to enjoy its unique terrain.”
Little Charley Pond The Adirondack Land Trust and a private landowner partnered to protect unbroken forest and a unique strain of brook trout on 2,122 acres bordering the William C. Whitney Wilderness in the town of Long Lake. The Little Charley Pond tract contains Snell, Bear and Little Charley ponds, and five miles of wild shoreline. A new owner, Charley Pond Preserve, has donated a conservation easement to the Adirondack Land Trust that keeps the forest whole and safeguards a rare fish community.

Stewardship is Forever “I was just looking for a place with peace and quiet, and a lot of beauty,” said Tina Bradt, who grew up on Seventh Lake in the southwest Adirondacks. Seven years ago, she found that place on Mays Pond, tucked into the 50,000-acre Pigeon Lake Wilderness, one of the wildest places in the East.
Buying the Mays Pond tract was a big decision for Bradt, but she has no regrets. “A positive was that nothing was going to happen to the property,” she said. Together Tina Bradt and the She works with the land trust ensure that the forest, Adirondack Land Trust to manage the land under a wetlands and 3,000 feet of conservation easement, shoreline stay mostly wild. which is a voluntary, legally binding agreement that limits specified types of land use and development, now and in the future. Together Bradt and the land trust ensure that the forest, wetlands and 3,000 feet of shoreline stay mostly wild. Bradt’s true passion is restoring historic structures. As attracted as she was to the land, she was just as interested in a log cabin on the property that was built in the 1930s for a timber dealer in search of a quiet retreat. Bradt is bringing it back to its past glory. She doesn’t mind keeping the building to its original footprint; in fact, she wouldn’t want it any other way. Her focus is on bringing out the best in this special place and sharing it with friends and family. Tina Bradt orients conservation manager Bill Brown during an annual conservation easement monitoring visit.

That’s how Bradt met the Adirondack Land Trust. She learned that we were looking for a conservation buyer for 330 acres we purchased in 2007 to limit forest fragmentation at the western edge of the wilderness.
Protect What You Value Like Tina Bradt, 62 landowners have used conservation easements to protect 19,850 acres in partnership with the Adirondack Land Trust. Each agreement conserves particular values of a place, from wildlife habitat to farmland to clean water to working forest. Easements are recorded in the title and stay with the land forever. The F.M. Kirby Foundation established the Fred M. and Walker D. Kirby Land Stewardship Endowment to provide and inspire support for the critical but often unseen role of stewardship in land conservation. Building the endowment will make us more effective in supporting landowners as environmental stewards of Adirondack lands, today and in the future. For information on options for protecting your own land, or on contributing to our stewardship endowment, please contact our office at (518) 576-2400 | info@adirondacklandtrust.org.

Over the past year the Adirondack Land Trust board and staff considered how we can measurably increase our ability to make a difference for connected forests, clean water, working farms and vibrant communities. We identified goals in four areas to guide our actions. 1
LAND
Left: © Brendan Wiltse; right top three: ALT staff; bottom: © Larry Master
The Adirondacks balances people and nature in a landscape that has become a living model for the world. We will work to sustain intact forests and family farms, and to protect smaller but significant tracts that advance community goals, strengthen connections between people and wildlands, and provide essential habitat. 2
WATER
Clean, cold water is essential to Adirondack ecosystems and communities, and it attracts people for swimming, paddling and other recreation. Through land protection, advocacy and partnership, we will secure a future in which native aquatic species thrive, and people have access to clean water for drinking and enjoyment. 3
COMMUNITY
The Adirondacks is distinguished from other parts of the country by small communities dispersed among protected lands and waters. We will apply our land, water and climate strategies—and strengthen partnerships with communities —to make this region an even better and healthier place to live, work and play. 4
CLIMATE
Climate change profoundly affects Adirondack lands, waters and livelihoods. We will employ land protection tools and advocacy to sequester carbon, support wildlife adaptation and migration, mitigate the effects of severe weather, reduce stresses on aquatic life, and advance alternative energy development.

Working for Wild Places The Adirondack Land Trust contracts with exceptional Adirondack conservation professionals to extend our reach. Featured here are two people having a big impact on our work. Tricia Bhatia has been working part-time with the Adirondack Land Trust since January 2019, assisting our transition to new conservation tracking software. Tricia is returning to land conservation work after a 15-year hiatus. She started at the Greater Worcester Land Trust after graduating from College of the Holy Cross with a BA in political science and environmental studies. In the interim, she worked in labor politics in DC; marine ecology in Brooklyn, Alaska and California; and as a ranch hand in Big Sur. She has family roots in Ticonderoga and spent childhood summers there and on Lake George. Tricia also works part-time for the Eddy Foundation, which protects wildlife corridors and leads other conservation work in the Champlain Valley. She enjoys human-powered locomotion. John Davis has worked seasonally with the Adirondack Land Trust for nine years, monitoring conservation easements, but that’s just a small part of his land protection résumé. John is co-founder of Wildlands Network, which has helped move habitat connectivity to the top of international conservation agendas. He serves on the boards of the Algonquin to Adirondack Conservation Collaborative (A2A), RESTORE: The North Woods, Eddy Foundation, Champlain Area Trails and Cougar Rewilding Foundation. John’s self-powered wildways treks have been featured in the book Big, Wild, and Connected: Scouting an Eastern Wildway from Florida to Quebec and in the film Born to Rewild, about scouting Rocky Mountain habitat connections. His explorations also include walking, paddling and cycling much of the A2A connection. He edits Rewilding Earth (rewilding.org).

New Board Members We were delighted to welcome two additions to our board of directors this year.
Vinny McClelland, of Keene Valley, has been exploring and working in the Adirondacks most of his life. After earning a forestry degree from the University of Vermont, he has worked in land-use planning in Alaska and the Adirondacks, and in running the family business, The Mountaineer. He is principal broker for LandVest in the timberland, consulting and real estate marketing divisions. Vinny serves on the Adirondack Landowners Association board, and heads the Keene Food Pantry and 507 Summit Steward Fund. He has three children with his wife, Barbara, and enjoys chasing them climbing, hiking and back-country skiing. Konrad “Kip Testwuide, of Lake Placid and Katonah, draws on 35 years of global experience as an investment banker to advise innovative early-stage companies. He channels his financial expertise for the benefit of the Adirondacks as a participant in Point Positive, an angel funding network that brings seed capital to businesses in this region. Kip is a volunteer with several conservation and education organizations, and serves on the board of visitors for the College of Letters and Science at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is a member of the board of trustees of the Trudeau Institute in Saranac Lake and treasurer of the Beaver Dam Sanctuary, in Katonah.

Public-Private Power The Adirondack Land Trust’s Coon Mountain Preserve is where many children reach their first summit. A mile-long hike provides views of Champlain Valley farmlands and woodlands, the Adirondack High Peaks and the Green Mountains of Vermont. New York State and the Land Trust Alliance this year awarded the Adirondack Land Trust $23,535 to improve trails at Coon Mountain, a grant made possible by private matching gifts from 25 generous individuals and foundations (see below). The grant was one of 70 statewide through New York’s Environmental Protection Fund, leveraging $2.2 million in private and local funding to support projects that protect water quality and farmland, improve public access for outdoor recreation, and conserve places that build healthy communities. Adirondack Land Trust was awarded a second grant to fund new technology for land protection and stewardship.
GIFTS TO CAPITAL AND SPECIAL PROJECTS Along with gifts to our annual operating fund, support for special initiatives is important to fulfilling our mission.

J. Edward Fowler, 1931–2019 Our friend and former board chair Ed Fowler passed away in May at age 87. Ed left an Adirondack conservation legacy totaling nearly 350,000 acres protected, from wilderness to working farms. Ed served 18 years on the then-shared boards of the Adirondack Land Trust and the Adirondack Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, from 1998 to 2007 and 2008 to 2017. He was chair from 2001 to 2004, leading by bringing everyone together in a sense of inclusiveness and shared energy. In 1996 Ed and his wife, Carolyn, donated 446 acres they owned to the Adirondack Forest Preserve—on Snow Mountain in the High Peaks Wilderness and on Mossy Cascade in the Giant Mountain Wilderness. Their generosity has touched many lives. When Hurricane Irene tore through Keene Valley in 2011, two of our staff’s homes were made unlivable by floodwaters. The morning after the storm, Carolyn and Ed offered their camp to one of the families.
