RECLAIMING URBAN SPACES ADITI BOGGARAM

Yeshwantpur, Bangalore
INTRODUCTION
The above picture shows how the labour class who are living on the streets are drying their clothes in this empty space.
The task provided is to identify and reclaim eithera ‘loose space’ or for a group of people in Yeshwantpur. Today, Yeshwantpur is an upcoming residential area, hence you can find multiple kinds of families put up there, including thelabour class. The group I focused on were the children playing near the construction site. There are small loose spaces along the roads which has plenty of potential to do a lot more. Why is it that the space is not being used ideally?
There is garbage thrown in one particular side and post this point the row of temporary shelters begin.
SITE
Currently the drain is chocked causing an overflow of smell water onto the sidewalk.
Throughout the entire stretch even though it is a residential area there are no streetlights present. This makes it an unsafe area. There are electrical poles which shows that electricity is available.
The prospected site is a sidewalk present in front of a residential society called ‘Golden Grand Apartment’. This space is not used as a sidewalk but instead as a space to dump garbage/dry laundry/park autos. There is a mixed variety of people living there. The labourers live right outside these high end societies in their temporary shelters till their project ends. The road in front of this buiding is relatively narrow and filled with speeding vehicles. Reclaiming Urban Spaces

It has an area of 60sqm and it platforms over a lake. This space connects to a community garden which has helped the increasing population of that area.

Barrio Public Space Project, Venezuela
In Carcas, Due to overcrowding and lack of space, these barrios have no safe, clean, and adequate public green spaces . With the amount of foliage minimized, the landscapes lacked natural color. To make up for this the architects painted the space’s facades with bright colors and simple designs. Reclaiming Urban Spaces
