Solar Decathlon is a 9 month multi disciplinary competition with the goal to design Net Zero structures. The 10 person team designed a modular community resilience centre which won the First prize for its economical, aesthetic, net positive and versatile design language. The competition also allowed for government collaborations and industry partners.

Vihaan is designed as a community centre which adapts to flooding times and homes the residents of Worli Koliwada who have been displaced. Utilizing effective shading techniques, eco-STPs, energy efficient devices and low flow fixtures, the shipping container and steel structure manages to not only create a safe haven but also return water and energy back to the grid.

Why Shipping Containers?

Shipping containers were chosen as the building blocks of the design, the team decided so as:

- Mumbai controls 55% of national maritime freights.

- Ability to reuse second hand containers.

- Shipping containers are highly stackable and have structural advantages over conventional methods.

- Reduction in building time thus highly adaptible and versatile.

- Function specific modules can be chosen according to the needs of the community and site.

User Groups

There are various user groups present near the site, some of them are:

- Working Professionals who work and live near zone of intervention

- Families residing in Koliwada.

- Fishermen and fisherwomen.

- Senior citizens.

-Young adults and kids aged from 8 years to 20 years.
