My love for architecture stems from my love for exploring materiality and spatial design. Design, according to me should be a delicate balance of one’s artist expression, human exprience and laws of mother nature. When these factors work harmoniously, great design is achieved effortlessly.

I often find myself working with concrete, POP and resin to express myself. I also have a keen interest in product design, furniture design and watch design.

Thane Creek, Navi Mumbai I Architecture Design Thesis Semester

Guide: Ar. Swapna Hankare

1

The thesis undertook understanding how varied religons progressed over time and how it affected the architecture of their places of worship. It parallelly tried to understand the lasting effects of the pandemic on humanity and the shift in belief systems of people from God, to more spiritual practices.

After analysing of over 100 people in the urban context the programme was set to be a Spiritual centre located in a urban zone but in the lap of nature. Materials used were exposed rammed earth, concrete and glass to allow for the true nature of the material to be visible. Atmospheres by Peter Zumthor and O.O.O. by Graham Harman were theories that heavily guided the design.

Intervening at the handshake of the sea and land the project aimed at creating spaces which beckoned people from all socio-economic backgrounds. Utilising the DCPR to design a public market inspired by the Venetian canals, the project’s main programme was a meditation centre along with therapy spaces.

The design also included public parks, performance spaces and cycling tracks as breakout spaces for tourists who visit Cuffe Parade and the people who work there. The materials majorly used were concrete for foundations, steel spaces frames for the internal support systems and GFRC panels with glazing to achieve a dynamic form which enhanced the skyline of the city.

An illustration analysing the 5 major zones of confluence which have varied socio economic residential populations and a plethora of activites specific to the zone. The aim of the illustration was to put forth the activites by opening the elevations and thus exploring the possibilites of creating a nonintrusive intervention which assisted and improved the quality of life. The above illustration won the second prize in "Graphic of the Year" competition.

16

The subsequent illustration aimed to showcase the consolidation of activities in the 5 zones of study. Post researching about Maslow’s theory and applying to the existing user groups we arrived at the conclusion of making a wellness and meditation centre at the site. The illustration also tries effectively show the filtration and selection of common functions prevalent on the site.

The parametric roof pattern flows and turns into the primary divide of spaces between the external wellness functions and internal meditation zone.

Varying modulations in openings and form have been made to control the amount of light as per function below and filter artificial light as the space desires.

One enters the spiritual center on the upper level and the lower level can be accessed via four different staircases and three lift shafts.

These islands of reclamation act as a foundation base for the entire structure and allows to direct movement of water canoes.

The entire structure is supported on 8 massive steel truncated columns which are made on three different pieces of reclaimed land.

External GFRC panels are clipped onto the truss system which follows a lamella pattern.

GFRC sheets help achieve the desired light weight shape that possess good acoustic qualities

The ellipitical void has treated double glass panels that allow permeable light.

Quality of space is enhanced by providing cut outs in the slab which allow for light and persistent sound of the sea.

The project was to redesign the LBS Maritime institute located on the eastern coast of Mumbai. Though the site is currently located at an isolated industrial spot, the project was designed keeping in mind the future influx and rapid urbanisation plans for the eastern zones of Mumbai.

The design aimed to create a sense of nostalgia for the alumni and a source of inspiration for the unexplored. The design is inspired by the sea and vistas are created at all zones to keep the user visually connected with the sea.

Understanding The Marine Academia

The site planning created vistas to the sea are created. Using an elevated plinth for the academic block and a placing the museum at a subterranean level ensured constant visual stimulation.

The public accessiblity opens the semiprivate insitute to the sea, and the accessible roof allows for multi-levelled interactive spaces.

Wooden louvres were used to control the amount of thermal radiation on the structure and the built is essentially hollow to maximize the stack effect and reduce the amount of air conditioning used.

1) Vihaan - Resilience Centre

Worli Koliwada I Sustainable Design, Resilience

Solar Decathlon is a 9 month multi disciplinary competition with the goal to design Net Zero structures. The 10 person team designed a modular community resilience centre which won the First prize for its economical, aesthetic, net positive and versatile design language. The competition also allowed for government collaborations and industry partners.

Vihaan is designed as a community centre which adapts to flooding times and homes the residents of Worli Koliwada who have been displaced. Utilizing effective shading techniques, eco-STPs, energy efficient devices and low flow fixtures, the shipping container and steel structure manages to not only create a safe haven but also return water and energy back to the grid.

26
Sectional View of Vihaan- Community Resilience Centre

Why Shipping Containers?

Shipping containers were chosen as the building blocks of the design, the team decided so as:

- Mumbai controls 55% of national maritime freights.

- Ability to reuse second hand containers.

- Shipping containers are highly stackable and have structural advantages over conventional methods.

- Reduction in building time thus highly adaptible and versatile.

- Function specific modules can be chosen according to the needs of the community and site.

User Groups

There are various user groups present near the site, some of them are:

- Working Professionals who work and live near zone of intervention

- Families residing in Koliwada.

- Fishermen and fisherwomen.

- Senior citizens.

-Young adults and kids aged from 8 years to 20 years.

2) Modular Clinic

Koliwada + Adaptible I Sustainable Design, Healthcare

Series of shipping containers as health-care modules were proposed to the MCGM at high density locations. The modules were designed in an ‘attractive colour scheme’ to please the eye, ‘ramps’ were provided for ‘univeral access’ and modules was well insulated against outside heat and were well ventilated to maintain hygenic conditions. Initial proposed locations included hospitals, colleges, office spaces and open play areas near the Koliwada region, but the modular proposal made the design adaptable on a wider range of locations.

Views of Modular Clinic

Variations:-

Variation 1 included a proposal for a two bed blood donation centre which could be set up in any location. The goal was to promote blood donation and bring the module as close as possible to the donation site

Variation 2 proposed a doctors’ module, or a space which could be easily set-up near underprivileged area so that hygenic medical help is accessible to all. Provision of dedicated partition walls and storage for medication has been proposed for the module.

Variation 3 was proposed as a three-bed extension module. The aim was to create a module which acts as an addition to any existing checkup space or to make a testing module which can be set up in public zones of high interaction

30
A clinic module in its closed form View 1 of modular clinic. View 2 of modular clinic. Elevation of partially open clinic

3) Th(reading) between the Lines

As the circular module rotates , an interesting wave pattern gets formed on its surface creating visual interactions

Process:-

The aim was to emphasize on inclusivity and interaction. The 9 circular modules with vividly vibrant threads are designed to incorporate the same. The installation attracts the audience from all around and brings them in a common space which we believe dissolves all lines of differences in that moment.

The circular modules renders a fun-filled, interactive experience and draw parallels with our country’s ever dynamic nature. We also believe that the true essence of our country is its diversity.

4) Bamboos and Bricks

Poladpur + Alibaug I Sustainable Design, Vernacular Design

Hands on workshops at Alibaug and Poladpur help me gain experience with bamboo and brick as a material. The team designed and executed a bamboo shack facing the beach, a pavilion for rest and learnt how to create a brick arch.

Process

The foundation for the pavilion was created by filling stone into the ground with mud and rammed untill it was stable, the pipe was used as a base for the bamboos.

Converging bamboos in the pipe foundation were fixed in place with help of a mixture of wet mud, stones and rubble available on site.

The dugout foundation was levelled with mud excavated from the site itself.

Thick binding wire was used to tie bamboo which had been slit into two halves to allow for maximum bendiblity. Binding wire was tied into place using pliers and hands.

Initial form was put into place by tying 2-4 slit bamboos in place and fixing them into the pipe foundations. Post the execution of the basic form, weaker bamboos were used to reinforce the pavilion.
