Bridging the gap Lombok moving forward

Selain dukungan terhadap transportasi udara, TransNusa juga menaruh perhatian penuh pada upaya mem-Vote Komodo menjadi the new 7 wonders of the world.

To customers of TransNusa Air Services Welcome aboard! This October, all eyes are on Lombok, where from October 16 – October 19, the island is hosting Indonesia’s premier travel event, TIME (Tourism Indonesia Mart and Expo) 2009. As an airline that services the West Nusa Tenggara region that includes Lombok, we wholeheartedly support the event and are fully behind the development of the area as one of Indonesia’s fastest developing tourism destinations. Working together with the Local Government and the people of Lombok, TransNusa will be part of a process that will continue far into the future. We wish every success for TIME 2009. TransNusa as always is increasing the facilities for its customers; one such initiative was the setting up and recent opening of the NTT (East Nusa Tenggara) Corner in the Kupang office – a relaxing annex where visitors can meet our consultants and actively interact with us. NTT Corner is already playing a vital role in the development of the NTT region as one of the bases for supporting the voting process to have Komodo included as one of the new 7 Wonders of Nature. To vote and read about this see www.new7wonders.com. We provide free internet facilities for those wishing to vote, and plans are underway to set up similar facilities in other TransNusa offices – all ways to serve you, the customer, better. We sincerely hope you all have a very pleasant flight and thank you for flying with TransNusa. TransNusa | Inflight Magazine | edisi October-December 2009 | 01

When it’s important that everything is

just right

Dining at the Square is dining in what everyone says is Senggigi’s finest restaurant – a dining venue that is now becoming a benchmark for all future Lombok eateries. The Square now means that Lombok residents and visitors alike can dine on dishes prepared by talented chefs from around Indonesia, confident of the quality of the meals - a mouth-watering variety of cuisines, including international dishe, and innovative Asian-fusion and Chinese cooking styles, using the freshest of local and imported ingredients The beverages list includes premium imported wines and a wide range of cocktails and cold drinks from an extensive bar. Some just stop in for a drink or some coffee with friends. Others make use of the restauarant at lunch time. But dining is more than just food and drinks, overall ambience is important, and the Square seems to have got it just right; where a romantic dinner in the cool garden setting alongside the pond is just as enticing as the more conversational tables upstairs on the terrace, overlooking the action on the main street. The Square restaurant has a speedy hotspot providing wireless internet access for its guests who often bring their laptops to the table while wining and dining, or as they relax in the cool lounge doing their business in style. The well-trained staff and attentive service ensure that your dining experience runs smoothly while for some interesting post dining relaxation, the Square offers fine Illy coffees and Cuban cigars for you to enjoy. Sometimes things have to be just right.

Netbook LG X130

Marina Café

The place to party

Never let it be said if you’re young or young at heart that you were in Lombok and at some time or other you didn’t set foot in Marina Café. The upbeat venue has two levels of bars and entertainment where every week some of Indonesia’s top bands and DJs do their thing to the cheers of Marina patrons. There’s a cool courtyard where the volume is lower and the action always gives you something different to look at – even if it is only checking out who’s arriving and who’s leaving – that goes on all night long. There are quiet tables in dark corners, booths to share and big spaces for groups who want to enjoy the evening together. Dancing and listening to music can make you hungry – that’s where Marina’s great snacks and meals come into the picture. Marina is known for its great pizzas. Choose from nine different styles at easy-on-the-pocket prices (Rp39,000 medium; Rp44,000 large). Or you can grab a snack while having a drink, and watching the action on stage. Snacks range from Rp15,000 to Rp28,000 and include corn chips, spring rolls, calamari rings, French fries and fish fingers. There are two salads (Rp15,000 and Rp20,000), seven Indonesian dishes and six Western offerings. Marina’s like that.... that’s why it’s a legend. It sort of says: Just come in and join the party. It’s a place for meeting new friends, watching the local action or getting together with your party pals for a top night out!

bridging

the gap

Di sebelah timur lautan pulau jawa Somewhere in the sea east of java two twin islands lay terdapat dua pulau bak pulau kembar side by side and worlds apart for many years, the quieter yang berdampingan satu sama lain dan of the two, lombok is beginning to stir mereka memiliki dunia yang berbeda.

One was a beautiful land where everything grew without effort. The creative inhabitants had plenty of time to devote their energies to artistic pursuits – dance, painting and elaborate architecture. Even down to manicured rice fields, the whole island was like one big sculpture. The other one was a harder land. Sweat-of-the-brow slog characterised the main endeavour of the inhabitants. An inhospitable terrain frequently stricken by drought was not a good provider. To add insult to continuous injury this island was once conquered and enslaved by the other. They called her Bumi Gora. “The Dry Farmland”. The fertile island needs no introduction. As an earthly paradise Bali has been attracting visitors from every area of the globe for more than 70 years. Lombok, the other one, inhabited by the hardy Sasaks, has largely been only 50 – odd kilometers to the east of Bali across the Straits of Lombok you world have thought that Lombok could have at least capitalised on the overflow from Bali; it didn’t. Lombok which means chili pepper was ironically thought to be dull and uninteresting; its people unfriendly, even hostile to outsiders. It was therefore bypassed by all but a lucky few; those pioneers of travel, the adventurers, hippies, backpackers, surfers who have always had the uncanny knack of being the first to discover idyllic, uncrowded beaches, mountain retreats and friendly “natives”. They had their secret hideaway. One factor was the problem of getting there. Flights from Bali were erratic; cancellations legendary. The ferry from Bali to Lombok was a marathon – you left Bali at dawn and finally arrived shattered at your spartan Lombok hotel (if you could find one!) around midnight.

But the situation has changed. Airlines and fast boats have bridged the gap and many more travellers are becoming familiar with an enchanting island. Glistening paddy plains, verdant hills, a rugged mountain chain and miles of white, sandy beaches loom through the windows of arriving aircraft. Lombok’s peaceful surroundings are obvious the moment you set foot on the island. The friendliness and hospitality of the people is apparent. There are no traffic jams, no smog. Traditional carts pulled by small ponies still seem to be the preferred method of transport. Even in streams beside the main streets of Mataram, the capital, you can find drivers washing their steeds in clean mountain water. Finding a comfortable place to rest tired traveler bones is no longer a problem. From home grown properties to international chains such as Sheraton, Holiday Inn, Novotel and Oberoi a wide selection of accommodation that caters to every budget is available. Today it’s easy to fly to Lombok. TransNusa flies three times a day from Bali while Silk Air flies direct from Singapore. Fast boats like the Gili Cat make daily return trips to the Gilis and Lombok’s mainland that take only about two hours. Next year Lombok’s International airport begins operations which will really see the beginning of a new era. But for the time being don’t be alarmed. The very things those early travelers found so attractive still exist. It’s still essentially a place to get away from the crowds where you can just sit back, relax and watch the rest of the world go by. Where if you want you can still find adventure off the beaten track, swim among some truly exotic coral and marine life and if you’re lucky, witness some ancient rites or rituals.

Lombok was isolated because of it’s geographic location and because it was thought to be less exciting than other destinations in Indonesia. Now however, the former isolated position and uniqueness have become its strengths. That small island between Bali and Sumbawa is finally attracting a lot of attention.

First on the list of attractions is the national heritage selected Mt Rinjani with its beautiful crater lake, one of the most stunning climbable volcanoes in the world. But it’s not only trekkers that can enjoy the mountain as the foothills offer scenery and colourful villages that are worth exploring. Areas like the like Sembalun valley (a hidden gem) with mountain folk, in appearance not far removed form others in the world’s cold mountain areas present attractions unlike any other in Indonesia.

Fast becoming Lombok’s most visited destination for international visitors are The Gilis – three small coral islands off the west coast of the island that are a diver’s heaven. Sophisticated restaurants and stunning accommodation possibilities are features that underline the truly international feel of Gili Trawangan – you could be on a Greek island or somehwre in Ibiza.. No cars or motor bikes to disturb disturb diners seated right by waves lapping at their tables’ edges as they dine on cuisine that could easily pass as dishes prepared in Europe’s finest restauarants. Try ko-ko-mo, Villa Ombak, The Beach Club and Horizontal for delicious fare. And then there is Senggigi, for many years the heart of Lombok tourism with its international resorts and stunning bay. Bars and restaurants like the Square and Marina line the Senggigi strip presenting food and beverages and entertainment to suit all budgets. Accommodation ranges from the Holiday Resort with its beautiful cottages and apartments to the Senggigi

Beach Hotel with its ‘designer’ Pool Villa club occupying the area’s best beachside real estate to the revamped Sentosa Villas, likewise right on the beach. Specatcular views and the fact the area accommodates all budgets mark the attraction of the Puri Bunga Cottages lining the hill overlooking ther Bay. The Kuta area in Lombok’s south has developed slowly but because of its stunning pristine beaches and surf opportunities is now rapidly gaining popularity which is sure to increase even more with the opening of the new international airport located near by. The area abounds in superb surfing locations like Grupuk and Maui. Novotel Coralia is the areas most spectacular accommodation possibility.

Ya, jembatan telah dibuka - gap pun telah hilang. Banjir wisatawan sudah mulai dirasakan, apalagi bila international airport jadi diresmikan pada tahun 2010, keadaan Yes, the bridge is in place - the gap has disappeared . The flood of visitors recently suggest the future with an international airport will be even rosier. pasti akan semakin lebih baik. | TransNusa | Inflight Magazine | edisi October-December 2009

Three small coral islands off the west coast of Lombok are fast becoming a magnet for divers from around the world

Who among us hasn’t watched with fascination and envy shots of Cousteau feeding giant grouper, riding huge whaler sharks, frolicking with porpoises and feeding swarms of multi coloured smaller creatures of the deep. Many explorers of the watery realm search for beautiful coral, others roam the world for sunken wrecks, some find release in waters of the bluest blue, but most will agree that the real underwater turn-on is fish. Now the Gilis do have a lot of coral, that’s why they have so much fish, and their blue coral is famous in its own right. The Gilis also have the odd wreck or two and water of the clear and blue variety - the basics needed for most dive sites. But what makes the Gili islands so special, however, is the mélange and abundance of a marine life that finds its home in those coral reefs and crystal clear waters that surround each island; among the richest in the world with over 3.500 species. It’s this sheer profusion of marine life that will take your breath away. When you compare that with the Great Barrier Reef and it’s 1.500 species and the Red Sea with its 600 species, you realize that the Gilis are major players in the premier dive-site stakes.

Most divers want to see sharks, generally within a day’s diving, the reef sharks which have no interest in humans are spotted. You’ll also see manta ray, barracuda, green turtle, clown fish and moray eel, (non dangerous). Two species of turtle, the Green turtle and the Hawksbill, make their home in the rich waters, and although they are on the endangered species list, both are commonly seen on dive and snorkeling trips. And of course there is the stationary life, the beautiful coral reefs themselves, colonies of living organisms which are continuously growing and building magnificently shaped abodes for the marine life to live among. But let’s not forget the island themselves! After all you don’t spend all your time in the water. There are three Gilis remember, formerly looked upon as backpacker party islands where cheap accommodation was the norm and good diving an afterthought. Such however was the potential of the Gilis as premier dive sites and idyllic getaways that the situation was destined never to last. I’m not saying the party is over, nor am I saying anything against backpackers and cheap digs, but what I am saying is that the level of sophistication and professionalism has been upped more that just a notch. This goes for both diving establishments as well as choices of accommodation. Prices have risen accordingly but if full houses and full diving boats are any indication no one has given it a thought. Dive centres like Dream divers, Blue Marlin, Buddha, Manta Dive appear to have no shortage of clients. With their practice pools and computerized dive equipment, their operations are as high tech and state of the art as anywhere else in the world. You don’t dive and don’t care to? That’s nothing to be ashamed of, though believe me the level of professionalism in diving instruction is such that grannies and granddads are also successfully getting tanked up and into rubber suits. You can always snorkel off the beach in the beautifully clear water or if you surf you can get out that surfboard for some nice waves that occasionally break off famous Sunset Point on the SW side of the island. Gili Trawangan even has a mountain

to explore and conquer, and from the summit you look down on a sleepy township reminiscent of those turn of the century south sea island settlements written about by the Somerset Maughams and Joseph Conrads extolling the charms of the far-east island mystique. In the distance, volcanic Mt Rinjani rises majestically. Sawahs (rice fields) sweep in a gentle slope to the palm fringed coastline with its golden beaches. A little off the mainland is another island ringed by its own sandy necklace while sailing trips rest at anchor in peaceful bays to complete the scene. The only sound is that of waves and the sea breeze. Incredulously you say that this is Indonesia, home of more motor cycle noise than any where else on the planet. Thankfully the means of transport on all three islands are one’s feet, a rented bicycle or Lombok’s ubiquitous horse and carriage, the cidomo.

Di Pulau mana Anda akan tinggal?

And which island should you stay on?

You may want to have more ‘cultural content’ in your holiday, learn a bit of the language’, ‘interact’, with the locals and get a ‘feel’ for what the country is really like. Gili Air could be the answer. Gili Air is closest to the mainland and with the biggest local population. But with all that you never lose the magic feeling of staying on serene tropical island.

Gili Meno was once the island of escape. However as a result of the general increase in Gili magnetism, it’s now becoming more popular - new resorts with all the necessary modern facilities are springing up. Gili Meno of all the Gilis is the one where you can really get away from it all on your own almost exclusive deserted island. Gili Trawangan, the largest of Lombok’s triumvirate of coral islands, and the furthest flung from the mainland was the original party-animal island. And while there is more nightlife on Trawangan than on the other islands, the “animals” are now tame and melt into a foreshore trip of snazzy restaurants and beachside cafes where a relaxing drink in the evening often precedes dining on some of the best cuisine found anywhere in Indonesia.

Trawangan’s first and largest resort, The Villa Ombak, spectaculary resides by the beach with a level of comfort and service normally only seen in the resorts of Ubud or Kuta. With its ’ by-the-beach’ dining and superb menu, a three-tier swimming pool, spa and beauty treatment centre, international health centre and state-of-the-art dive operation, its facilities are a far cry from what used to be available on Gili Trawangan. There is also ko-ko-mo Resort and The Beach House that lead the way in the development Teluk Nare, Lombok Available transport to Gili Islands

of some very chic bungalows and spacious villas with private swimming pools or jacuzzis and luxurious furnishings and fittings that are beginning to become the rage. Both resorts have ‘get-there-early-if -you-want-a-seat’ bars and restaurants facing thre beach and feature gourmet dining. Rewsorts are constructed in harmony with the island’s local charms using natural materials where simple elegance is the dominant theme of most developments. Cool, sassy and sexy Horizontal (Resort) also resides at the top of the list and like the others mentioned above has its sumptuous private luxury living “spaces,” the ‘H’ Rooms as well as a chill-out lounge and beachside dining. Transport to the islands has never been easier. The Gili Cat that flies along at 30 knots with a capacity of 30 pax and other fast craft often do two crossings from Bali. Flights from Bali are readily available to Lombok each day, with the choice being the reliable TransNusa operation that flies three times a day from Bali. Beachside Bar & Restaurant

Off the Northwest coast of Lombok floats Gili Trawangan – an island renowned for its’ white sand beaches, aqua clear water, stunning coral reefs, abundant sea life and excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. ko-ko-mo Resort is situated directly opposite the beach, facing the beautiful highlands of Lombok. Eleven 1 and 2 and 3 bedroom private Villas, each with their own freshwater swimming pools, provide an exclusive retreat from the noise and bustle of hectic city life. A fine dining restaurant caters to modern culinary tastes and guests can relax on ko-ko-mo Beach in the evening while sipping on delicious cocktails and enjoying the eclectic music and spectacular views. Gili Trawangan is one of the three main Gilis (small islands), and has a reputation for being relaxed and laid-back, yet sophisticated and chic. It’s the combination of these traits that makes it an increasingly popular place to visit and it is no surprise that many repeat visitors to the island are so captivated that they end up purchasing villas and share in the wonderful lifestyle that Gili Trawangan has to offer. What is lifestyle without delicious food? Of ko-ko-mo’s restaurant, Fine Restaurants and Villas magazine says “In a sense, they are

trying to create one of the world’s greatest, and maybe one of the most difficult to get to, destination restaurants on the planet. But they have one major trick up their sleeve; arriving on that white sandy beach on a beautiful speed boat, booking into a luxurious, but not pretentious, resort and dining in what could be one of the country’s finest restaurants does have a certain hedonistic, ‘I love life to the fullest’ ring to it.”

Komodo Dragon Photo courtesy of TransNusa

If you’re lucky enough to be reading this aboard a flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo on the northwest tip of Flores, then maybe you should put this magazine down, look out of the window and relish one of the world’s prettiest flights. After crossing the elongated island of Sumbawa, you will see Komodo and Rinca, their coastlines peppered with inlets and crescent shaped bays dressed with ribbons of white sand. This is followed by atoll after atoll, coral reefs, lagoons and perfectly-circular volcanic lakes. In fact, by the time the aircraft descends into Bandar Komodo, the tiny airport at Labuan Bajo, you – like us –will be hungry to explore more of this extraordinary group of islands. Sailing into Komodo on a chartered boat we were struck by an eerie sense of desolation and despair. Dare we intrude further into this remote and hostile territory or turn tail and head back to civilization? Yet, despite our trepidation, we disembarked and took sudden delight in the island’s raw energy, its lack of refinement and its primitiveness, sharing what the early explorers must have felt centuries ago when they first stepped ashore. And then we saw something we had never seen before… unfamiliar footprints in the compacted sand, showing clearly defined claw marks accompanied by the telltale tracks of a tail, without doubt an ancient carnivorous monster! We cautiously moved to the reception office to get our national park entry tickets, valid for three days. We were then directed towards TransNusa | Inflight Magazine | edisi October-December 2009 | 25

another building and, at the base of its steps, we had our first encounter with one of the giant lizards known as the Komodo dragons. A massive scale-covered monitor with spiked claws, an armour-clad body, a snake-like head, and fierce jaws from which flicked a long yellow forked tongue. These are Indonesia’s living dinosaurs, and they deceptively bear a not uncommon resemblance to the geckoes that grace the walls of our Balinese homes. But that’s where the similarity starts and ends. Our guide, armed with a pronged wooden stick, led us inland, a hot and dry monsoon forest surrounded by open savannah grasslands. Timor deer and wild boar darted nervously through the prickly palms; prey to the dragons that have no enemies apart from their own kind. The reason that these primeval apex predators have survived unmolested for so long is attributed to the fact that the treacherous whirlpools and rip currents in the seas around Komodo and Rinca have ensured their isolated endurance in a habitat that is free from invaders. Heading along the banks of a dry riverbed, we were accompanied by the sound of bird song and chirruping cicadas. There was a sweet smell that we couldn’t identify; we observed strange yellow snails clinging to the bushes, sulphur-crested cockatoos, a water buffalo at a drinking hole, butterflies, jungle chickens, and a swarm of bees hanging in an angry mass from the bough of a tree. Our floral sightings, meanwhile, included rare orchids, distinctive lontar palms and kapok trees. With over 1000 species of fish in the waters offshore, there is much more to this wildlife reserve than just dragons. Nevertheless, to see more dragons was our objective and we soon found one under a thorn tree, guarding her nest from marauders, which are usually other dragons. Two metres in length, her

Nahkoda kapal 28

menacing beady eyes regarded us as she stretched her neck, replenishing the folds in her thick loose skin. We were lucky to spot several more on the trails; the most dangerous predatory lizards in existence. We had no desire to get too close – and we still question the effectiveness of a forked stick as a deterrent should one decide to have a tourist for lunch – but it was a privilege to see them in the wild, in a natural environment that has hardly been touched by commercialism. Two hours later, were still on a Jurassic high as our boat pulled away from the jetty. After this adrenaline-filled holiday adventure it was now time for some pure relaxation at someplace where we could kick back and think of absolutely nothing at all. The captain swung the vessel out into the channel and we chugged off westwards in search of a fabled South Seas Shangri-la; namely Seraya Island, a haven of quaint thatched huts, white sands, sun and turquoise sea. We sailed past the many islands of The Komodo National Park, navigating the reefs and scouting for manta rays and flying fish. After four hours of cruising, the boat pulled around the tip of Seraya to reveal a sandy, sun-drenched tropical paradise. A small dugout canoe paddled out to meet us and take us ashore. The island has just 13 huts built along the beach, which can be rented for around US$12 a night, supported by a small restaurant with good food, friendly staff and an endless supply of cold drinks. For the next two days we swam, snorkelled on the amazing reef, ate fresh fish, drank cold beer and worked on our suntans. There is simply nothing else to do, and that in itself is the reason for going there. Seraya’s bungalows are no Four Seasons and certainly will not be everyone’s cup of tea. There is electrical power for only a few hours each evening and there is very limited

fresh water (which incidentally is shipped over from another island each day) so guests are urged to wash in seawater often than not. However, for any ecologically aware modern tourist – and many who come to visit the dragons in Komodo are – it is a rare treat to conserve resources and live the simple life. Seraya is the perfect place to finish a voyage to the islands of the dragons; Komodo and its neighbour, Rinca, are a journey back in time to the land of there and then, while Seraya is about leaving the modern world behind and concentrating on the here and now.

The Rote Open 2009

19 September 2009, Nemberala, Rote Island: In a very closely contested 30 minute final at scenic Bo’a Beach on the East Indonesian island of Rote, Garut Widiarta narrowly defeated Marlon Gerber to bring home 20 million Rupiah (USD 2,000) and 3,500 points in the inaugural Rote Open 2009 presented by the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour.

“I feel a bit lucky to have been in this final and win against Marlon, especially because it’s on not an easy wave to surf on my backhand. Marlon has been surfing insanely in every heat, so I’m actually surprised that I beat him” said Widiarta after the final. “All the guys were surfing so good, like Lee (Wilson), Dede (Suryana), Betet (Merta) and Marlon, so I was really fortunate to come out on top.”

The government of Rote Ndao in conjunction with event organizer PTR Communications and the Coca-Cola ISC Tour produced this four-day surfing event on the island of Rote in East Indonesia in an effort to promote tourism and provide a great venue to hold a six star prime ISC tour surfing competition. The event was open to international and Indonesian surfers with 90 surfers from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Switzerland, Uruguay and the USA competing in four divisions; Open Pro, Masters, Women’s, and Local.

Setiap hari selama pertandingan berlangsung, Pemerintah Rote Ndao dan event organizer menyuguhkan pertunjukan tradisional termasuk tarian dan musik sasando, sebuah musik khas daerah Rote Ndao.

Each day at the contest site the local government officials and event organizers treated the contestants and spectators to cultural programs including dancing, music, and speeches to show off their unique and interesting culture.

At the closing ceremony the Regent of Rote Leonardus Hanning expressed his appreciation to all for producing such an excellent event, and his commitment to having PTR Communications and the Coca-Cola ISC Tour back next year and as long as he is in office (a five year term).
