PARKING and CARS

Despite our frequent usage of vehicles, its physical by-products like roads or parking facilities have become increasingly unpopular. mankind’s discovery of the rst machine-moving car was rst founded by Karl Benz with his rst prototype . With the car industry became more mass-market oriented the price drop of the automobile change its eligiblity towards large range of society. As car itself began to touch huge segment of society (in the 1887s cars often symbolized as a prestige and pride of the owner because the car possession in those era was still limited to the rich people), it becomes the most adored technology that frequently accompany human with their activities. As J.B. Jacksons (a writer, publisher, instructor, and sketch artist in landscape design) stated that car is a “pleasure vehicle & a toy, costly, exciting, and extraornidary elegance.” As the vehicle industry (including cars) keeps rising towards more larger market the need of an open free space to store those large numbers of transportation. During and after the world-war I the practicality of the parking actvity still dominates in a dense urban environment. Many huge open space and unused structure was converted into a parking storage facilities.

EXPERIMENTAL ARCHITECTURE

Parking, was derived from the french word which means “storage space” specialized for storing a large mass of cars. During the vastly-improved civilization after the world war, the types of parking mainly divided into two general frame. Between the technique-deliverence oriented and the experiment search of the parking structure new typologies & landscape forms.

As a city becomes more congested, the quick solution to this problem was to develop certain multi-storey parking facilities in 1950-1960. This potential however, haven’t been explored thoroughly its fucntional and aesthetic limits. The dominance of the practical aspect still over-shadow the aesthetic potential of the architecture until 1960 where numerous design rm began to look at the aesthetic aspect of such structures. Parking structure, as the name sounds, is based on the incapability of a car in following the human gestures. The obliquity syntax such as ramp, slope, incline, diagonal, acclivity, declivity, scarp, escarp, and rise : these terms all describe a condition other than atness. The ramp - the result of the wheel, which distinguishes the motion of the car from that of the human body - sets the ramped multi-storey car park apart from other types of building.

Car Free Day World car free day, which is celebrated on September 22th is a day where motorists are encouraged to give up their motor-vehicle for a day. Organized events are held in some cities and countries (including Jakarta). The event oers the city motorists and commuters an idea of their locality with fewer cars. With the usage of machine-powered vehicle that produces harmful emission to a minimum, citizens could feel the refreshed air and relax doing exercises and some family gathering activity without the worry like in the weekdays. Every Sunday from 6 to 11 a.m., Jalan Sudirman and Jalan Thamrin are closed to all private cars. While this may not seem such a big deal, for the many Jakartans who live with macet (traďŹƒc) all week, it truly is. Thousands ock to the big boulevard to walk, run, cycle and skate or simply to stroll leisurely, enjoying the street food, circus-like displays and occasional public events. Originally started as a government initiative to help reduce pollution, car free day on Sudirman and Thamrin has become a well-loved Jakarta tradition, an opportunity for city folk to get up early and get active in the company of many, many like minds and bodies. Spatial-Con guration Relations Part I - Leisure Activity

Leisure activity scattered through the car free day territory in Jl. M.H. Thamrin, Jakarta. Usually citizens spends time with their family and doing some outdoor activity to take advantage of the condition during the car free day period. Therefore, many non-machinery vehicles like bicycles, skateboard, and roller skates dominates the road. Citizens that gathers within the area do some activity such as playing some light sport (badminton, rope jumping, aerobic gymnastic) along the predetermined road. These kind of sports doesn’t need xed space con guration and relatively easy to learn by newbie and attracted youngsters. Quite often family brought together their members to do some picnic activity in some shaded area. they often bring foods by themselves and often spends time to enjoy the day without any noise generated by the usual machine-powered transportations and their pollutions.

EXPERIMENTAL ARCHITECTURE

In the rst transformation type the actual capacity began to take over the primary function of the architecture. This phenomenon occurs because the similarity between the space con guration of a food market and the space con guration of parking places. Over time from the evening to early morning the actual capacity took over the function place and becomes the function itself until the morning comes where all the food market activity would become dormant and allowing the primary function to take over again.

In this second weekly transformation type the second actual capacity began to take over the primary function of the architecture. This phenomenon occurs because the similarity between the space con guration of a certain leisure activity and the space con guration of parking places. Over time from the early morning to mid-day the actual capacity took over the function place and becomes the function itself until the mid-day comes where all visitors activity would become dormant and allowing the primary function to take over again.
