Helping to support F A M I L Y
FOUNDATION
PRESIDENT’S WELCOME Dear Friends, I am thrilled to welcome everyone to this fabulously festive evening, and I thank you all for your support. What an honor to be able to participate in tonight’s festivities, which combine our profound dedication to social action with good food and great fun. I began my “career” at Barnert through our Social Action Committee, which did and continues to do work that touches my heart. I thank Rabbi Frishman for continuing the legacy and adding her unique passion and inspiration. We have been taught well that nothing is more important than doing what we can to make our world a better place. Toward that end, we are honored to be able to work with and support the following organizations: The Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative, run by volunteer healthcare practitioners and laypeople from our community, BVMI provides free primary healthcare for working residents of Bergen County whose earnings are between 100% and 200% of the Federal Poverty Level and The Family Reach Foundation, a grassroots organization which provides financial relief and support to families fighting cancer. It has been a privilege for us to learn about the meaningful work that you both do and to partner with each of you. A huge THANK YOU to the committee of volunteers that worked tirelessly to make this evening a reality. You are all winners, no matter how you do at the tables tonight! And, to the many sponsors whose names appear in this program – your generosity and commitment to tikkun olam (healing the world) is truly appreciated and an inspiration to us all. Have fun! Warmly, Pam Himeles President, Barnert Temple
CHAIRPERSONS’ WELCOME CASINO NIGHT 2010 “Opening Doors: Individuals. Community. The World.” Casino Night 2010 proves once again that great things happen when great people collaborate. On behalf of the entire Casino Night 2010 Committee, we welcome both Barnert Temple members and guests for a wonderful evening of celebration, inspiration and fun. Monies raised by Casino Night 2010 will support Family Reach Foundation which supports families fighting cancer and Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative which provides free healthcare for uninsured Bergen County residents, in addition to Barnert Temple Education and Outreach programs. We are proud to be able to support these noble causes through your generosity. Please peruse this Ad Journal and offer your support to the wonderful organizations, businesses, and individuals who contributed to its great success. We also thank all of our donors for the amazing prizes and silent auction items being offered tonight. We would like to offer special thanks to the Meringoff Family Foundation and BNP Paribas for their Diamond Sponsorship; and Accenture, CB Richard Ellis, Cushman & Wakefield, JT Magen and Virgin Atlantic for their Gold Sponsorship. Thanks also go to our Silver Sponsors: G3, Bob & Ellen Gutenstein, Kramer, Levin , Naftalis & Frankel, Larry & Diane Sobin and Joel & Carole Ann Steiger. Many people within our community worked tirelessly to make this event a reality. You will see their names listed on the next page. The collaborative effort of both the Barnert Temple Men’s Club and the Barnert Temple Sisterhood was spectacular. Special recognition and thanks go the following who were instrumental in helping us meet our financial goals by generously tapping their personal and professional networks in support of these great causes: David Cohen, Seth Haubenstock, Rand Pear, Susan Low Sauer and Larry Sobin. We would also like to acknowledge Marian Filan who did an amazing job managing all the prizes and silent auction items. We also extend a heartfelt thanks to the Temple office and custodial staff as well as the entire Board of Trustees and advisory board for their ongoing support. Finally, the success of this year’s event, like previous years, has so much to do with the terrific organizational skills and professional approach of Jim Judd. His even temperament, wise guidance, and tremendous follow-up were fantastic. It’s all in the details, and our thanks to Jim for managing them so efficiently and successfully. Have a great time eating, drinking, gaming, and participating in our silent auction, and hopefully winning one of our raffle prizes! Enjoy the company of old friends and use this opportunity to make new ones. Thank you so much for joining us! Stephen Becker and Jennifer Sauer Co-Chairs Casino Night 2010

BENEFICIARY ORGANIZATIONS The Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative With a population of more than 900,000 and a high median household income of $65,600, Bergen County, NJ, ranks among the ten most prosperous counties in the United States. Yet 13% of Bergen residents live below 200% of the federal poverty level, which for a family of four is $44,100.
The common element is that children are involved and impacted, either directly as patients, or indirectly within the family. The focus of our current efforts is to raise funds to help eligible families pay for a variety of significant expenses that mount during the patient’s treatment. Our goal is to help more than 1,000 families in the next 3-5 years. Premise of our Cause
Many of our neighbors are hard-working individuals and families who do not have and cannot afford health insurance or healthcare. In fact, more than 85,000 have neither Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans’ nor private insurance. Approximately 40% of the uninsured are unable to obtain any routine healthcare and more than two thirds do not have a family doctor. As a result, many medical conditions are not treated until a crisis arises. The only recourse becomes a visit to the emergency room of a local hospital - a costly and inefficient use of resources. The BVMI, founded by Barnert Temple member Dr. Sam Cassell, is a group of local physicians, other healthcare practitioners and concerned citizens who have established a free Healthcare Center in Bergen County. Our volunteers are dedicated to helping our neighbors and improving the overall health of the community. For information, contact BVMI at 201-342-2478 or www.bvmi.org.
The Family Reach Foundation The Family Reach Foundation’s mission is to provide financial relief and heartfelt support to families fighting cancer. The majority of our funds are dedicated to families with a child or young adult who is being treated for a pediatric or other type of cancer. However, we have also designated a portion of funds for other special cases, including other adult cancers and catastrophic illnesses.
A Menacing Storm: Each year, there are over a million new cases of cancer, 20,000 afflicting patients under the age of 30 and their families. The disease does not discriminate - it affects people of all backgrounds and financial means. Facing the Tornado: The surprise and trauma of the disease can resemble the sudden devastation of a tornado: One moment, life is safe and normal, and the next it is has been turned upside down with no time to hide or recover. Attending to Love Ones: Quickly, the only thing that matters to the family is bringing a loved-one back to good health and restoring calm to the family - make the pain go away, get rid of the cancer, return to normalcy, do whatever it takes. The Ongoing Aftermath: At the same time, life continues to move - the world does not wait. The often-overlooked consequence of the cancer tornado is that thousands of families hit financial and emotional breaking points. Staying Afloat: Many families struggle tirelessly to keep the calm, stay on top of difficult financial conditions, and help bring F A M I L Y health back to their loved one fighting cancer. The drain can be catastrophic, FOUNDATION and lasting. Family Reach exists to help families get through this unimaginable storm.
