23rd Annual Golf & Tennis Tournament

23rd Annual Golf & Tennis Tournament Dedicated to Changing Lives Through Research and Outreach The Alan T Brown Foundation to Cure Paralysis (ATBF) was established in 1988 and has supported scientific and medical research worldwide. Some of the institutions that have been the recipients of ATBF’s funding are:

· · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·

The Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Foundation The Alan T Brown Image Analysis Facility at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis The Miami Project To Cure Paralysis Children’s Hospital, Boston, MA Columbia University, New York, NY Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC American Spinal Injury Association The Spinal Cord Injury Project as Rutgers University, Piscataway, NJ University of California, San Diego, CA The Achilles Track Club National Institute for Medical Research, London The University Hospital of Copenhagen, Denmark University of Hamburg, Germany University of Zurich, Switzerland Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel Visiting Nurse Services of NY

While scientists work towards a cure, improvement of chronic problems associated with paralysis must be addressed. Therefore, studies that alleviate physical and medical pain and make life more bearable are core to our mission. The Foundation is now focusing on Quality of Life issues and in 2009 gave a grant to ASIA (American Spinal Injury Association) in support of the research of Dr. Andrei Krassioukov. This research focuses on investigations of the mechanisms of the autonomic dysfunctions that are common in individuals following spinal cord injury. The Foundation’s Peer Mentoring and Outreach Program provides information about healthcare, education, fertility, driving, and other areas that will help individuals achieve a level of independence after paralysis. ATBF is proud that this vital resource and support system has been, and continues to be, instrumental in helping individuals cross barriers and realize that there is life after a spinal cord injury. That is a “cure” in itself. ATBF is grateful to be the recipient of generously donated funds from a number of different individuals and organizations. Most recently, the Foundation has been proud to receive grants from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Foundation, as well as donations from individuals who designate the Foundation as the recipient of funds raised from fitness challenges and personal milestones. ATBF also receives funds honoring friends who have suffered spinal cord injury.

August 1, 2011 Dear Friends, It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 23rd Annual John Vanbiesbrouck Celebrity Golf & Tennis Tournament. As many of you know, this Tournament has become the signature event of the Alan T Brown Foundation, serving as the highlight in the ATBF fundraising campaign. This event creates an awareness of spinal cord injuries and supports the Outreach and Peer Mentoring Program. I have known the Brown family for over 30 years and it is a privilege to call Fran, Benjy and their family my friends. The Brown Family is an inspiration to me. They have taken a personal trauma and embraced others in similar situations—providing hope, compassion and information to move forward. I would like to congratulate Howard Cohen, the 2011 Guest of Honor, and the McDonald Family, recipients of the 2011 Standing Tall Award. Their affiliations with this most worthy cause enable the Foundation to continue the important services to the spinally injured and their families when their lives are turned upside down. This event is the culmination of many months of hard work, planning and preparation. I would like to thank the Golf Committee who I had the pleasure of working with, as well as the staff at ATBF—who together made this event possible. To all of you—thank you for participating in the day’s activities at Ridgewood Country Club. Your generosity and commitment allows the Foundation to continue its essential work. With warmest regards,

Lynn Scheck

23rd Annual Golf & Tennis Tournament Howard Cohen 2011 Guest of Honor August 1, 2011 Dear Guests:

Welcome to the Alan T Brown Foundation’s 23rd Annual Celebrity Golf & Tennis Tournament. I appreciate the opportunity to help the Foundation by being this year’s Guest of Honor, but we all know that the real Guests of Honor each year are the many individuals who attend this event in a wheelchair due to their spinal cord injuries and Fran Brown who works 24/7 on their behalf. I was introduced to the Brown Family and the Foundation by my clients and friends, The Clare Family. My friend, Jamie Clare, who received so much support and love from the Brown Family and the Foundation after his spinal cord injury, inspires me in so many ways and is one of the primary reasons for my commitment to the Alan T Brown Foundation. The Alan T Brown Foundation has assisted many spinally injured individuals to achieve a better quality of life since 1988. Recently the Foundation has supported the Transition Care Program at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City, which targets the uninsured and provides homecare services after rehabilitation for the newly injured. The information provided through the Quality of Life Program has made a significant difference for people who contact the office for advice after an injury. So enjoy this wonderful day and remember that each of you make a difference in the Foundation ’s effort to improve the quality of life and to find the cure to paralysis from spinal cord injuries. Thank you. Sincerely,

Howard Cohen
