Lincoln Square Synagogue Annual Dinner

This year LSS is proud to pay tribute to its Community Scholar and our community's scholars. Linda & Howard Sterling

Mrs. Elana Stein Hain

Both Elana Stein Hain and Linda and Howard Sterling are inspired, natural educators who willingly share their scholarship with our community. Elana, in the less than two years it has been our privilege to have her as a member of our clergy, has demonstrated great learning, passion and compassion, warmth, and hard work, as she, virtually instantaneously, took charge of our educational programming, and became one of the pillars of our kehilla. In a recent column discussing the leadership role of women in Orthodox Judaism, Jewish Week Associate Editor Jonathan Mark stated: "There's one thing I've noticed about spiritual leaders, men or women...Those who have accomplished the most, care about titles the least. Be something special and the people will figure out what to call you." As I read the piece, all I kept thinking about was Mrs. Elana Stein Hain Linda Sterling has devoted countless hours to enlightening the members of our shul on the nexus of Jewish culture and religion, whether lecturing on Franz Kline or Franz Kafka, Sarah Imaynu or Sarah Bernhardt, either at LSS or the Jewish Museum. Her husband, Howard, teaches the fascinating weekly Shabbat morning class called Peer Parsha, and, as a constant consumer of Joseph Shapiro Institute classes and lectures, always seems to manage to make the most insightful comments and ask the most significant questions. The Sterllings have been members of our community since the mid-1980's and we are thrilled that they have finally agreed to allow the shul to pay tribute to their many contributions.

Lincoln Square Synagogue Annual Dinner

Welcome to the 2010 Lincoln Square Synagogue Annual Dinner. Tonight’s dinner is about Jewish Learning and Jewish Culture. It is also about celebrating Jewish Life and Jewish Community. I would like to wish a personal Mazal Tov to our wonderful and deserving honorees, Elana Stein Hain and Howard and Linda Sterling. The first class I ever gave as Rabbi of the community took place at the Sterlings’ home. I don’t remember what I spoke about, but I remember everything else about the evening. The apartment adorned in every space with evidence of a love of art, Judaism and Learning, the scintillating conversation, the polite but persistent demand for more knowledge, the love of family, friends and Peoplehood, and most of all the warmth and the love. In the 5 years that have followed I have learned so much from Howard and Linda. I have taken museum tours with Linda. I have participated in classes on Torah taught by Howard. I have participated with them in times of mourning and times of Joy. I have witnessed there love of Israel expressed in the most active sense, and have marveled how they have galvanized the community to do more and more for Israel. Howard and Linda are truly two very special people who give so much to our community, to the Jewish People and to the world around them. It is almost impossible to describe what it means to me to be a colleague to Mrs. Elana Stein Hain. In the two years that I have known her and worked with her I have learned to always have the highest possible expectations, and to always have these expectations exceeded. When I think of Elana and her role in the shul, I find myself thinking of Dayenu. If she were merely a Torah scholar of great learning, dayenu. If she were merely a teacher with a unique ability to enthuse, fascinate and edify an audience, dayenu. If she were merely a counselor of skill, love and empathy, dayenu. If she were merely a program director of imagination, innovation and professionalism, dayenu. If she were merely a community leader of warmth, charisma and magnetism, dayenu. If she were merely a role model of piety, observance and spirituality, dayenu. The fact is that she is all of these things and so many more. I am proud of everything that Elana has achieved at Lincoln Square in just two years, and no less proud of our community that has embraced Elana and helped her make such dazzling achievements. Tonight’s dinner could not have succeeded without the incredible commitment of the hard working and tireless committee Shelley Cohen, Rose & Morty Landowne, Allison & Yitzy Rubin, Edina Sultanik Silver & Ian Silver. The commitment that they show to the shul and its vital work is humbling and inspiring. Thank you. I would also like to thank Joe Blank, Marilyn Osgood, Florine Skolnick, Phil Landsberg, Sharon Sachs in the office, and all of the countless volunteers who have made tonight such a success. I would like to thank my fellow clergy members, the Officers, particularly our incomparable president and my friend Ruvan Cohen and the entire officer group and everyone who does so much magnificent work in being involved in the shul around the year. May the almighty continue to bless our Shul, the entire membership, tonight’s honorees and all of us, that we may continue to grow in Torah and spiritual values as Jews and as human beings. With best wishes

Shaul Robinson

Lincoln Square Synagogue Annual Dinner

Dear LSS Community, It has been an extraordinary honor to serve as your president for the last three years. When I was elected to the position shortly after the passing of our beloved Nathaniel, I assumed that it would provide me with a means of repaying the community for its kindness and caring of our family over the years. It turned out that I was the recipient of more good will and kindness, and for that Shelley, Jonathan, Jackie and I are forever grateful. Certainly, central figures of that kindness have always been our honorees Linda and Howard Sterling. Howard, in his quiet, emotional way has been a source of caring, intellectual challenge, devotion and love for our family and for many in the Community. Linda, in her slightly less quiet way, has earned a position in the LSS membership as a person whose life expresses so many of the values of our community: love of Israel, integration of the best of the modern world with the best of the Jewish world, and devotion to community-building. The legendary Shabbat meals at the Sterlings are the salons of our time, filled with intellects challenged, senses sated and divrei torah delivered. Perhaps the finest accomplishment of my Presidency has been the zachut of working with Rabbi Robinson and with the extended clergy. When Rabbi Robinson and I first had the opportunity to meet Mrs. Elana Stein Hain (at the time we had not yet settled on the “Mrs.” honorary title) we were overwhelmed with her torah scholarship, warmth and personality. Little did we suspect that we had underestimated these gifts. Mrs. Stein Hain has altered the LSS Community for the better through her unique combination of warmth and intellect. She is not a female Torah Scholar. She is one the finest Torah minds of our Community, with the ability to integrate and present Torah with clarity, infectious joy, and insight that are the rival of Torah Scholars of any gender. She inspires us all and is a role model to us all. We are blessed to have her in our midst on a daily basis. Finally, I want to thank my family for being supportive of my mission as president these past three years. Integrating the demands of this wonderful community with the needs of my wonderful family has been a challenge, but my family’s support and understanding has enabled me to not feel conflicted about the need to make choices. I have no doubt that the next administration will be successful in leading us into the new building, b’mehera b’yamaynu, and I look forward to dancing down Amsterdam Avenue with all of you. Yours truly,

Ruvan Cohen

Lincoln Square Synagogue Annual Dinner

We read in Tehillim 89:

Rabbi Meir Leibush Malbim (19th c. Russia) offers a very relevant interpretation. He writes that God created the world with chesed, with no prior reason to do sonot as fulfillment of any debt - but out of complete altruism. And God sustains the world with emunah, by faithfully extending that original chesed each and every day. Our honorees tonight, Linda and Howard Sterling, are certainly models of these two traits as well - chesed and emunah. In their private lives and their communal lives, their various projects and initiatives show tremendous care and loyalty to people, to Israel, and to our kehilla. And all those who have put together tonight's event - from office staff to dinner chairpersons - have shown that volunteerism and fidelity in return. We thank them all for their generosity and for their leadership. Truly, it is this pairing of chesed and emunah which is the foundation of our synagogue. In a true spirit of imitatio Dei, this synagogue was founded on altruism, to provide a place where all are welcome. And today, one of the many dimensions that distinguish our Lincoln Square Synagogue community - and perhaps the most salient one- is commitment, loyalty. We are committed to Judaism in all of its expressions - halacha, culture, history, education. We are committed to each other in all of our diversity- across ages, backgrounds, experiences. And we are committed to our shul - in a certain sense, the sum of those parts. May we see the very literal fulfillment of a world, and a shul, built on chesed, very soon one block south! Mazal tov, and enjoy your evening!

Elana Stein Hain

Lincoln Square Synagogue Annual Dinner

There is an old Yiddish saying: “Tzu Gott und tzu leyten,” a remez – reference – to equally giving G-d and Mankind that which is due to them. To G-d we dedicate our Sacred Service, learning and doing the Mitzvot. To Man, we dedicate ourselves to strive to improve the world through our actions – Tikkun Olam. I don’t believe the phrase meant for us to separate our actions into Holy and Earthly spheres. I believe that if we analyze the Yiddish version carefully, it seems to be saying that each should be integrated into the other. Humankind should take upon itself qualities of the Divine, and the Divine should look upon us with the human paradyms of compassion and love. Elana Stein Hain and Linda and Howard Sterling represent the two spheres: that of Kodesh , the Divine, and that of Chol, Humankind. However, the uniqueness of each of them is that they possess both qualities. Few are as close to the Sacred and dedicated to the Word of the Torah, Torah learning and Mitzvot as is Elana, and yet she shows the wonderful qualities of compassion, concern, care and love, that are so very human, to everyone she comes into contact with. Linda and Howard are active and successful examples of Human achievement who nevertheless possess an undercurrent of the Divine in everything they do. That is true whether it is Linda’s ability to inspire throngs with her lectures on aspects of Judaism, Judaic Art and History, or Howard leading the “Peer Parsha” Shabbat Morning sessions in the Parsha of the week, and his active participation in many classes of Jewish thought and interest. Each honoree is one side of the double-sided ”Golden Mean” that combines the Divine with the Human. We at LSS are fortunate to have such individuals in our midst. Today, we celebrate three human beings who truly understand the meaning of “Tzu Gott und Tzu Leyten.” MAZAL TOV ELANA, LINDA AND HOWARD! Batya joins me in wishing you a life filled with joy and Yiddishe Nachas! Chazzan Sherwood Goffin

Lincoln Square Synagogue Annual Dinner

Dear Friends, I am delighted to write this letter on behalf of Linda and Howard Sterling, and Mrs. Elana Stein Hain who are being honored at the forthcoming Lincoln Square Synagogue Dinner. The Sterlings are one of the nicest couples of the Lincoln Square Synagogue family, I am deeply indebted to Linda Sterling for filling in the “black hole in my education. As an unschooled and untutored boy from the Bronx, I knew little about art and museums. Unfortunately, I still know little about art and museums, but Linda Sterling has attempted to fill in that lacuna. Her celebrated guided tours of the great New York museums have left a deep impact on myself and Aidel, and we look forward to them eagerly whenever they are offered. Despite my lingering cultural disability I have gained a much greater appreciation for the fine arts, and there is now hope that I will eventually become a cultured person. Since her arrival at LSS, Mrs. Elana Stein Hain has taken the synagogue by storm. Having known Elana from her early childhood, Aidel and I are not at all surprised. We are very proud of her accomplishments and know that this is only the beginning of a stellar career. Lincoln Square Synagogue is fortunate to have her and to learn from her. We wish Linda, Howard, and Elana much mazal on their well deserved honors.

Ephraim Z. Buchwald

Lincoln Square Synagogue Annual Dinner

Since the second temple period the Synagogue the "Mikdash Me'at" came to replace the Temple as the communal place of worship. While the Temple had mainly been a place of sacrifice and intermittent communal gathering, the Synagogue became the epicenter of Jewish communal life, binding each and every Jewish community together. In the Temple sacrifice was a private matter. A korban is brought by an individual and can be shared only after the completion of the spiritual service. Prayer on the other hand can be joined by many and in fact is meant to be said betzibur or with a quorum. Prayer and Torah learning are spiritual endeavors which can be shared and enjoyed by many. When one shares a physical pleasure with other people they may be gaining similar enjoyment but no group of people can share the exact same physical pleasure. For example, if one shares a meal, the actual pleasure is derived from separate pieces of food or bites. The satisfaction and pleasure derived from a spiritual endeavor can be shared in totality. The same thought can bring pleasure to many, the same song can uplift many. This is what gives spirituality its ultimate unifying quality. Lincoln Square Synagogue has always been at the forefront of Orthodox Synagogues as a place of beautiful worship and intense Torah learning. This year we recognize the fantastic leadership and contribution of both an outstanding member of the klei kodesh as well as a special couple of the lay leadership: With a resounding Mazal Tov to Mrs. Elana Stein Hain And Linda and Howard Sterling on their well deserved awards for their tremendous contributions to making Lincoln Square the great house of prayer and learning that it is. Elana, your tremendous spirit, knowledge, and programming efforts add a dynamic component to the synagogue that is indispensable. Mazal Tov on this most deserved honor. It is both an honor and a pleasure to work with you. Linda and Howard, as Jewish educators in your own right, you are pillars of strength and chesed in our community. You embody the values of Torah and Mitzvot, love for Israel and the Jewish people. You devotion and commitment to teaching the Jewish people and our community is a model for us all to aspire to. Mazal Tov on this honor and may we all merit the fulfillment of G-d's promise:

Rabbi Elli Ausubel

Lincoln Square Synagogue Annual Dinner The choices for Honorees at this year’s Annual Dinner are truly worthy of Top Chef. Each one has made their own contribution toward a most delightful and sumptuous buffet of learning at Lincoln Square Synagogue. Howard Sterling’s sparkling and challenging Peer Parsha class provides the appetizer for Shabbat morning and the weekly Torah portion; Linda Sterling’s exhilarating (sold out) museum tours and art talks achieve that extraordinary synthesis of cultural and intellectual pleasure – providing a most satisfying course of haute scholarship that is always “well done”; Elana Stein Hain’s incredible shiurim are the icing on the cake. Her words and thoughts stick to your mind and leave you wanting more. In addition to their immense wealth of knowledge, what makes the honorees unique is their graciousness and generosity in sharing their scholarship with all of us, particularly as they spice their teaching with a wonderful passion that makes the learning that much more enjoyable. The LSS members, and community at large, have all been afforded a truly incredible menu of learning. We honor Howard, Linda & Elana for honoring us with their presence at LSS. And now it is time to enjoy the Dinner.

Joe Blank, Executive Director Lincoln Square Synagogue

We are honored to participate in the well-deserved honor being paid to our teachers and friends Elana Stein Hain and Linda and Howard Sterling. We have learned much from all of them and look forward to many more years of benefiting from their knowledge, creativity, and friendship.

We also salute our beloved friend, Ruvan Cohen, as he completes the final days of his momentous presidency of Lincoln Square Synagogue. Out of the depths of his family's bottomless sorrow at the tragic death of Nathaniel, z.l., he chose to begin the task of keeping Nathaniel's memory alive by assuming the enormous responsibility for the lay leadership of our shul. Over the last three years, with love, humility, endless patience, good humor, deep wisdom, and just plain hard work, Ruvan set the platinum standard for any future leader of Lincoln Square Synagogue. We are all in his debt for his labors on our behalf and look forward to the time when proper public tribute can be paid to him, Shelley, Jonathan and Jackie to express our community's appreciation.
