Risë Steinberg Fogel Devoted Faculty Member Risë Steinberg Fogel was raised in Kew Gardens Hills just one block away from the Solomon Schechter School of Queens. Her parents, Flora and Morris Steinberg moved to Kew Gardens Hills shortly after the conclusion of World War II. “Murray” helped establish the Orthodox minyan at the Main Street Jewish Center and occasionally served as its Baal Koreh. A few years later, the Steinbergs were founding members of Torah Emeth, the Young Israel of Kew Gardens Hills and the Young Israel of Queens Valley. As their children Tina and Risë were reaching school age, the Steinbergs recognized the importance of a Jewish education. They were excited by the nascent day school movement of the 50’s and decided to send their daughters to a fledgling yeshiva called the Rabbi Dov Revel Yeshiva of Forest Hills. Risë graduated from Dov Revel with an excellent background in limudai kodesh (religious studies) as well as a strong secular education. She continued her secondary education at the Yeshiva High School of Queens and upon graduation attended Queens College. Risë was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and graduated Cum Laude with a BA in Early Childhood Education. She continued her graduate education at New York University where she earned a masters degree from the Department of Hebrew Culture and Education. Before joining the faculty at the Solomon Schechter School of Queens, Risë had a rich teaching history at the Solomon Schechter School of Nassau Country, the North Shore Hebrew Academy and her alma mater the Rabbi Dov Revel Yeshiva of Forest Hills. In addition to teaching, Risë gained a well‐rounded experience in Jewish communal service which included working in Jewish camping, The State of Israel Bonds and UJA Federation of Greater New York. Risë has been teaching kindergarten at our school for the past fourteen years. She enjoys working with children to create a warm, caring and nurturing environment where her students can feel comfortable and secure and can develop socially, emotionally and intellectually. Her particular passion is teaching children about Shabbat, Jewish Holidays and Parshat Hashavua (the portion of the week). She derives tremendous satisfaction from hearing the children participate in Hebrew song and prayer and participate in Jewish rituals such as the weekly Oneg Shabbat or the Model Passover Seder. Risë strongly feels that while it is important to provide children with the tools to succeed academically it is essential to instill within them strong emotional and spiritual connection to their Jewish heritage in order to ensure the transmission of our great tradition “m’dor l’dor”‐ from one generation to another. Risë is married to Mordecai Fogel, the Senior Executive V.P. at David Rosen Bakery Supplies. They have one lovely and talented daughter, Eta Eliana, who is currently a junior at New York University majoring in Architecture and Urban Design. She is involved in Jewish education as a teacher at the 92nd Street Y in their Hebrew School program called “Connect”. The family resides in Jamaica Estates where they are members of the Young Israel. We are happy and proud to honor Risë for her hard work and commitment to the Solomon Schechter School of Queens.

Message from David Kalman Executive Director Shimon the Righteous used to say: The world depends on three things‐ on Torah study, on the service of G‐d, and on kind deeds. (Pirkei Avot/Ch. 1:2) This year the Solomon Schechter School of Queens is proud to honor a group of people who exemplify many of these traits. Rabbi Manes and Silvia Kogan our Community Leaders and Active Parents Recipients have been involved with our school since arriving in Queens. Rabbi Kogan is a member of our Board of Trustees and Silvia is a member of the Board of Education. Our teachers are the recipients of his wonderful knowledge of Torah when he runs Lunch and Learn sessions throughout the year. Silvia is an active member of the Board of Education where her keen observation and knowledge of education enhances our discussions relating to the welfare of our children. We are proud to include their children Ilan and Abby as part of our Solomon Schechter family every school day. The Kogans truly are a family who follows the words of Shimon the Righteous. The best expression to describe Rise Steinberg Fogel, our Devoted Faculty Member Recipient is “To know you…is to love you”. Her love of life and children brings us all to a higher level each day. These past few years have been difficult for Rise, but you would never know it from watching her with the kindergarten children. Her room is always a happy place where the children are learning while enjoying their time in our school. Many times when I am leaving the school after a late meeting, Rise is still in her classroom preparing her room or lessons for the day ahead. Her joie de vivre is contagious and she is an asset to our school and community. Your kind deeds and service of G‐d as a teacher in a Jewish school does not go unnoticed and I wish you and your lovely family a mazal tov on this most deserved recognition. Norton Spiel is a very special person whose love of our school and the Hebrew language has elevated the way we teach limudei kodesh. His generous contribution to the Spiel Family Hebrew Language Enhancement Program has helped us place Smartboards in virtually every Hebrew classroom allowing our teachers to use the internet to supplement the program in Hebrew language. The Spiel Hebrew Language Enhancement Program has also enabled us to do much statistical analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of our various programs by segments including the various culture groups. Shimon the Righteous said the world depends on kind deeds‐we are grateful for all of his kind deeds to our school and honored to give you a special award this evening. Debra and Gary Weil, alumni parents are most deserved of a special award for their contribution to the Solomon Schechter School of Queens. Debra our “pinch hitter” nurse was past president of the SSSQ‐ PTA. She worked on various committees of the PTA and was always available whenever needed. Gary will always be known as the man who kept the Little League running single handedly for many years. As “commissioner” and coach you put the whole administrative responsibility on your shoulders. Many of our children received the benefit of all your effort. We are proud to give the Weils a special award for all their love and devotion to our school. As well, we wish their sons Tsvi, Aaron and Lavey a hearty mazal tov.
Message from Martin D. Mayerson Headmaster How wonderful it is to gather and celebrate another successful year for the Solomon Schechter School of Queens. For more than a half‐century our school has been preparing boys and girls to lead productive lives and to be leaders of the Jewish Community. Our dual curriculum encourages children to think expansively and creatively as they examine secular and Judaic subjects. Each year is exciting. This year we can boast of a new updated and soon‐to‐be interactive website. Additionally just about every classroom is equipped with a SmartBoard and several computers. Our teachers continue to update their skills by staying abreast of the newest curricular trends and standards. We are fortunate to have a great team of professionals and lay leaders who continue to make our successes possible. This Gala gives us an opportunity to recognize some of these wonderful people. I am happy to join in honoring Mrs. Rise Fogel who has worked with our Kindergartners for the past 15 years. She has helped prepare the foundation for children to love learning, and become life‐long learners. She has established the ground work in reading and mathematics as well as t’fillah and ahavot Israel. I wish her congratulations and continued professional and personal success. Mrs. Fogel represents just one of our dedicated professionals who toil daily to make school the wonderful experience it is for our children. Our success as a school is directly related to efforts of the many lay leaders who volunteer their time and resources. With the Kogan’s we really hit the jackpot. In addition to their wonderful children who are exceptional students Rabbi and Mrs. Kogan serve on our Board of Education and Board of Trustees. Mrs. Kogan is active in our PTA and can be seen helping at book fairs, boutiques and carnivals. Rabbi Kogan works with our teachers in our “Lunch ‘n’ Learn” program and with groups of students doing interesting, informative and relevant workshops. He has also been a personal advisor to me for which I am grateful. Mr. Spiel has been a generous donor to our school for many years. Through his generosity our Pre‐K program was born, and our Hebrew Language program has been enhanced. Not to mention that with his commitment there are three generations of Spiels involved with SSSQ. Last but not least I congratulate the Weil’s. It has been my pleasure to see their two younger sons graduate from the school. During the many years of their involvement they have contributed greatly to our PTA and school sports program. To all of our honorees tonight a hearty Yasher Kochahem!
Message from Dr. Ben Ami Principal of Judaic Studies I rarely attend the Solomon Schechter Queens gala – not because I am shying away from the people, the company, or the good food (which I probably should be avoiding!), or even the speeches. The truth is that often the gala coincides with the Israel trip, and I am far away across the ocean at this time. I am particularly pleased however that this year I am able to attend and to celebrate personally with the honorees, because I have gotten to know each of them after seven years here at the school, and I can sincerely appreciate their efforts and accomplishments on behalf of the school. Rabbi Kogan constantly looks for ways to enrich the school spirit by volunteering and initiating programs for the students and even for the staff. His mentschlik warm style and approach speak to everyone – and not to be shadowed by him, Silvia donates time and energy to school activities and meetings. And if I may add, on a personal level Rabbi Kogan has proved himself a loyal and helpful friend. I have worked closely with Mr. Spiel, whose generosity and commitments have been most valuable in moving the Hebrew program forward at the school in many ways – and it is always a delight just to shmooze (sorry for the Yiddish!) with him, and hear about how the previous generation dealt with the challenges of Jewish education. Mrs. Fogel is often the last person I see in the building at night, as she is still working in her work after some late night meeting going on, yet she is still smiling just like when I see her in the morning. Her classroom is always colorful and bright, spiritually as well as literally, and reflects the joy of her students. The Weils were part of the first group of parents I met at the school, as their children were here at school when I arrived, and their hard work as parent lay leaders was well recognized as they filled important positions in the school structure. To all of you I say Mazal Tov – Yishar Kochachem – and happy to be celebrating together with you tonight!
Message from Stuart Birbach President SSSQ has meant much to my family, having provided a wonderful education to our children Naomi class of 2000 and Marc class of 2002. Denise and I have spent numerous hours working on behalf of our school and this evening we have the pleasure of honoring Rabbi and Silvia Kogan, and Rise Steinberg Fogel. We also are proud to present special awards to Norton Spiel and Debra and Gary Weil. Our honorees and special award recipients have each in their own way contributed to the betterment of our school. Rabbi Manes Kogan the Rabbi of the Hillcrest Jewish Center has provided me with sage advice as our Board of Trustees has worked tirelessly to continually improve our school. Silvia Kogan a member of Committee on Education is an active participant on that Committee. They are the proud parents of Ilan, Abby and Daniela. Rise Steinberg Fogel is an outstanding teacher in our kindergarten. I have often seen her in the classroom late at night preparing for her class. We are pleased to give a special award to Norton Spiel. Norton has been a generous supporter of Schechter Queens and in particular our Hebrew Studies program. Norton’s children David, Saul, Michael and Jonathan are graduates of our school and his granddaughter Sivan is currently in our 4th grade. We are also presenting a special award to Debra Weil a former co president of Parent Teacher Association and Gary Weil who were both instrumental in our little league program that existed in our school and which was a participant in the Queens Jewish Community Little League. The Weil’s children Lavey, Aaron and Tsvi are graduates of our school. Each of our honorees and special award recipients’ has made a special contribution to Schechter Queens. It is through the dedicated efforts of them that SSSQ is able to thrive. Our school continues to advance in the use of new forms of technology to enhance our children’s education. Smartboards have been installed in most classrooms and a new lower school science lab has been built. The Board of Trustees is committed to making further improvements to our school in the future. In order to further improve our school the Board of Trustees has authorized a campaign to build a new middle school science lab and hope that you will join us and support the campaign. On behalf of the Board of Trustees I say “yishar koach” We are so proud of each and every one of you. May you continue to go from strength to strength. Lots of good luck in the future, MAZAL TOV!
Message from the Development Team ʺTzedek, tzedek tirdof: Justice, justice you will pursue.ʺ Deuteronomy 16 Debra and Gary Weil as alumni parents of Lavey ’03, Aaron ’06 and Tsvi ‘10 you are an important part of our community and realize the benefits a Jewish Day School education provided to your children. The values you display at home coupled with the Schechter experience formed a solid foundation for them. As involved alumni parents you represent positive role models for your children and for other parents to emulate. This evening you are presented with a special alumni parent award which is well‐deserved. Your contributions to Schechter Queens are felt when the words t‐ball and baseball are mentioned and through Gary’s connection to the players for many years. Debra’s activity in the Parents Teachers Association including former Presidency together with her involvement on the Board of Trustees and Committee on Education exhibits her sincere commitment to Schechter. It is a pleasure knowing you both, sharing memories, hours on the field and in the board room. All of your tremendous efforts on behalf of Schechter Queens are greatly acknowledged this evening. May you always be blessed with good health, joy and peace! Congratulations to you and your family on this special honor. To Debra and Gary Weil and all our deserving honorees ‐ Rabbi Manes and Silvia Kogan, Rise Steinberg Fogel and Norton Spiel‐you each are exemplars by the virtues you pursue: Tikkun olam — to heal, repair and transform the world B’tzelem elohim — living life “in the image of God” by caring for others Tzedakah — righteousness Mazal Tov
Elaine L. Suchow Naomi R. Horowitz Director of Development Alumni Coordinator
Message from the Teachers’ Association To the Honorees, Congratulations on your well deserved recognition. You’ve given of yourself in the finest tradition. Your caring and love of our children is so true That we’re sending a hearty Mazal Tov to you! Rise Fogel uses caring, sensitivity and enthusiasm to help guide her children through their kindergarten experience. She instills in them a love of being Jewish through stories, songs and art projects. Rise prepares her children by helping them work to the best of their ability and creating in them a desire to learn. Rise has been a teacher for fourteen years at Solomon Schechter. She is a teacher who is respected and admired, and a colleague who is well‐liked and valued. We are delighted that Rise was chosen to be honored this year and we thank her for her dedication to the students of our school. Our school has been the lucky recipient of the generosity of Norton Spiel and the Spiel family. Mr. Spiel has always had the best interest of our children in his heart. He helps sponsor programs that enhance the learning experiences of the students and prepares them for the next step in their education. Debra and Gary Weil are past parents of Schechter students. They have always been active parents. Debra is a past president of the PTA and Gary was instrumental in organizing and running the Little League team. Our children have benefited through their desire to help our children. Rabbi and Mrs. Kogan and their children have been an integral part of our Schechter life for more than five years. The constant support and encouragement of the Rabbi and Mrs. Kogan have enabled us to help guide our children on their path of Jewish learning and to live a more fulfilling Jewish life. Yasher Koach to All! Judith Aharoni and Carol Gans Co‐Presidents Solomon Schechter Teachers’ Association
Message from the Parent Teacher Association The parents in our Parent Teacher Association are active, vibrant, committed volunteers who collaborate with the administration and faculty to enhance the learning experiences of our students. It is the parents and grandparents who help sustain some of the special programs at SSSQ. Tonight we recognize the contributions the esteemed honorees have made to our school. It is a pleasure to honor two of our active parents, Rabbi Manes and Silvia Kogan. Rabbi Kogan leads Jewish studies programs for our students and teachers. Most recently he worked with the 7th and 8th graders on wrapping tefillin. Silvia Kogan has been involved in the PTA for several years. She has helped with our lunch and Box Tops 4 Education programs and co‐chairs the sale of the Purim cards. Silvia is on the school’s Board of Education and serves as the Secretary. Rabbi Kogan and Silvia exemplify what it means to be community leaders and active parents. Yasher Koach! It is an honor to pay tribute to Mrs. Rise Fogel. She is a devoted kindergarten teacher who in addition to teaching our children the fundamentals of education, also instills in them Jewish values. SSSQ is fortunate to benefit from Mrs. Fogel’s experience. Mr. Norton Spiel is an example of l’dor v’dor from one generation to another generation. His children graduated from SSSQ, he has grandchildren who graduated and one grandchild currently enrolled. We appreciate Norton’s continued generosity and sponsorship of the Spiel Family Hebrew Language Enhancement Program. Debra and Gary Weil are also parents of SSSQ graduates. They were active parents when their children were students and still keep connected. Debra is a past president of the PTA and Gary was responsible for the school’s Little League baseball team. PTA and SSSQ greatly benefitted from their strong involvement and commitment. Todah Rabah to our Special Award honorees for their contributions to SSSQ. Mazal Tov to all the honorees who are outstanding role models for our community. May you continue to go from “strength to strength”. Janice S. Bigler and Taline Kozuch PTA Presidents
