WINTER ISN’T FOR WASTING We all know of someone who takes the whole winter off doing nothing more than binging on Netflix and popcorn. But for some of us, we not only make the most of winter, but actually like it. Here’s a few ideas to make the most of the six months or so that we lovingly call winter in Wisconsin.
ICE FISHING Most of us have dropped a line in the water on a sunny day in July, but have you ever tried it in January? You might consider yourself an avid fisher, but sitting on a bucket on 30 inches of frozen lake is a whole different ball game. But when the fish are biting, and you see the flag “tip up,” the elements simply fade away, and winter, at least for the moment, slips back into summer. And believe it or not, Wisconsin has over 15,000 lakes, so finding one to call your own should be no problem.
APOSTLE ISLANDS The Apostle Islands, so close to Canada, you can almost smell the poutine, eh? Always awesome, but so incredibly spectacular in the winter - especially the Ice Caves. Located at the western end of the Mainland Unit of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in northwestern Wisconsin, there are intricately carved sea caves in cliffs formed by Lake Superior waves splashing against the rock and freezing almost instantly. Needless to say, bring your winter gear. All of it. Because it is as cold as it is beautiful.
COPPER FALLS STATE PARK Sticking with the frozen water theme, have you ever seen a waterfall in the winter? It’s true, they freeze, almost as if you’re looking at a still-shot photo. One such spectacular site is Copper Falls located, oddly enough, within Copper Falls State Park in Mellen, Wisconsin. The park is 3,068 acres of hills, mountain trails, tall pines, birch, and maple, and when the thermometer dips far enough for long enough, the most spectacular view of the frozen falls. WISTRAVEL.COM
WOLFSONG ADVENTURES IN MUSHING FISH CREEK WINTER FESTIVAL
Have you ever taken your dog for a walk in the winter when a squirrel crosses your path? Well, that’s a little taste of what dog sledding is like. If you’ve ever wanted to experience it for real though, you’re in luck. Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing, located in Bayfield, Wisconsin, lets you drive your own team of Siberian Huskies or ride along with one of the guides. And with Wolfsong so close to Lake Superior, there is almost always snow from December through March, even when the rest of the Midwest is still hoping. Better yet, unbearable arctic blasts are tempered by the lake and the temperature rarely drops below zero. Adventures are waiting all winter long.
Fish Creek Winter Festival will celebrate its 33rd year in 2020! Whether you’re into tossing bikes or toilet seats, racing minnows or competing in kickball in the snow. Each year brings something weird and wonderful. Fish Creek’s longest-standing tradition and Door County’s most notorious winter event features live music, quirky games, delicious food, the notorious “Fruit Loop Fun Run,” an entertaining Stumpf Fiddle Contest, a spectacular fireworks display and a “Smokin’ Hot” Chili Cook-Off…all under a heated tent overlooking the frozen waters of Green Bay. The fun is jam packed into three days January 31, 2020 - February 2, 2020.
MADISON WINTER FESTIVAL This annual celebration reflects the city’s active winter culture and features skijoring (a combo of cross-country skiing and dog sledding), fat biking, sledding, hockey, snowshoeing, snow carving, live music, food vendors, and more. Held each year since 2005, the festival features two days of outdoor activities for all ages. Keep warm with hot chocolate and s’mores to make it a truly magical weekend. The festival is February 1-2, 2020.
HIBERNATING IS FOR BEARS, BATS, AND BUMBLEBEES.
U.S. SNOW SCULPTING CHAMPIONSHIP & WINTERFEST With a full roster of events spanning nine days, Lake Geneva’s Winterfest is jammed with all kinds of activities from helicopter rides to magic shows to, of course, the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Competition. All of the activities take place at the beautiful and famed Riviera on the lake front in downtown Lake Geneva from January 25, 2020 February 2, 2020. It is without a doubt one of Wisconsin’s favorite winter festivals.
AMERICAN BIRKEBEINER
CEDARBURG WINTER FESTIVAL
Challenge yourself and experience Birkie Fever! The Slumberland American Birkebeiner is North America’s largest cross-country ski race and a homecoming for cross-country ski racers from around the globe! In fact, skiers from 49 States and 22 countries participated last year. Here’s the good news though; there’s still room for you if you think you have the drive. If not, that’s OK. It’s an incredible weekend for those of us who are far better equipped to watch, with a hot beverage, from the sidelines. The race Spans 50 kilometers from Cable to Hayward for Skaters, and 55K for Classic Skiers on Saturday, February 22, 2020.
There’s something about the freezing temps that bring out the weird and wacky in Wisconsin. Cedarburg, just north of Milwaukee, was smart enough to capitalize on the craziness with their annual Winter Festival. The ever-popular, two-day event features an ice carving contest, the Lions Club Ice-Burg Open golf tournament, bed races and barrel races, and wine tasting to name just a few of the activities. And if beer is more your style, fear not, the Cool Brew beer tasting event on Saturday night was designed just for you. If by chance you wake up Sunday a little groggy, then you won’t want to miss the pancake breakfast. That too was designed just for you. SEE WISCONSIN
