June was packed with meetings, activities, etc. Dave Van Buskirk President, and I spoke to the Rotary Club providing an update on our recent trip to Las Vegas for RECON retail conference. Dave, Troy Brown Past President and I attended, we met with fifteen potential retailers and attended various panel discussions. The fundraising committee met on June 24th and several ideas are being explored for a possible event on the first weekend in September. Your suggestions are welcome and important to the committee. Call the Chamber, President Dave Van Buskirk or any member of the committee with your ideas. Members are: Alex Barnett, Chip Manning, Stacy Mooney, Jim Cortner, Carol Fulmer, Roger Guess, Dave Van Buskirk and Sam Henley. Gary Morgan with Workforce Solutions held a regional workforce development roundtable with Burns Phillips, State of Tennessee Commissioner of Labor and Workforce Development with local and surrounding region manufacturer’s CEO’s. Commissioner Phillips and his team presented programs and services implemented by the state and provided an opportunity for recommendations from local manufacturers on how to improve programs. The commissioner specifically wanted information on programs being implemented in our communities for youth. Programs such as mock Interviews, mentor programs and Franklin County’s Career Quest were discussed as current successful programs and encouraged implementation in all districts. Career Quest was possible as a result of a grant awarded to Franklin County for obtaining ThreeStar and more requirements. The 2013-2014 grant awarded was directed to our Chamber by the Joint Economic and Community Development Board which allowed the implementation of the Career Quest. Franklin County submitted documentation for projects and activities that will result in the county’s improvement in one or more of the Governor's Pillars: Jobs & Economic Development; Fiscal Strength & Efficient Government; Public Safety; Education & Workforce Development; Health & Welfare. Meeting the Governor’s Five Pillars for Success resulted in the grant designated to the Chamber for the Second Annual Career Quest which benefits every eighth grader in Franklin County. Congratulations Director Roger Caldwell, on a great event, in spite of rain, celebrating Winchester Utilities’ 50th Anniversary. The event was a celebration of the successes and leadership of the Winchester Utility District employees for the past 50 years. The Winchester Utility team provided displays of the services, educational electrical safety tips. Dave and I attended the TVA Retail Development workshop with an opportunity to interact with panel representatives from: FranNet; Retail Strategies; Tune Entrekin & White, PC; Buxton; The Retail Coach; Baker Storey McDonald Properties; Parkes Development Group and The Shopping Center Group. Retail Development Panel discussion was lead by TVA Economic Development & ICSC Tennessee Co-Chair Melissa Halsell. Entrepreneurship is thriving and the evidence is all around us with three Ribbon Cuttings in June; Pretty Discoveries, Cash Advance 24/7, and Sanctified. Be sure to drop by each new business, make a purchase and welcome them to our community! The official launch of the new Infiniti powertrain plant was Thursday, June 26th. The footprint for Infiniti, Nissan along with Zanini, CST Storage, and others brings international partners and visitors to Tennessee and Franklin County. Thursday marked the opening of a new 310,000 square foot facility which is collaboration between the Renault-Nissan Alliance and Mercedes parent Daimler. Gary Edwards, Infiniti vice president-Decherd Powertrain

Operations and Battery Plant, welcomed International guests, state and local officials. Mr. Edwards introduced Governor Bill Haslam who congratulated Mr. Edwards and his team on completing the plant in record time. Executives on hand for the Job One launch in Decherd included Infiniti President Johan de Nysschen; Mercedes- Benz directorengine production Erhard Schletterer, and Infiniti Americas Vice President Michael Bartsch. The plant is an “excellent demonstration of the strong collaboration with Daimler commented, Nysschen. The new facility/partnership leverages the technologies, expertise and highest level of manufacturing standards from both companies, which in turn, benefit from the synergy and economies of scale of this joint effort.” Retail development follows industrial expansion, which brings more jobs and needs for various services and products. There is much more to come in both arenas and with it brings challenges to build a strong prepared workforce. Many options for increased opportunities for training facilities, programs for our youth and recruitment of retail are being explored. The Franklin County Monthly Manufacturer’s Round table was held Wednesday, June 25th with 22 attending. Guest speaker was Jason Beard Legislative Liaison who provided an update on relevant legislation that was recently passed. Also attending from the Department of Labor and Workforce Development was Melinda Williams, Communications, Constituent & Government Relations. Special guests introducing a new program ALMMII American Lightweight Materials Manufacturing Innovation Institute were: Reza Abedi, Assistant Professor Mechanical, Aerospace & Biomedical Engineering and Feng-Yuan Zhang, PhD Mechanical, Aerospace & Biomedical Engineering with University of Tennessee Space Institute. Our next project is to edit, update, and print the 2014-2015 Chamber Economic Development Area Profile and Membership Business Directory. This is a member only publication and is the main marketing tool for our county. A “one stop” information publication for our community that is provided to industrial prospects, newcomers, tourists and retail business prospects interested in our area. You do not want to be left out of this publication; published annually by your Chamber staff. We are exploring options with graphic designers and working on a different format for the next publication. Delores will be contacting previous advertisers and every member will have an opportunity to participate. Ads are available now. Call 931-967-6788 for more details. Another busy month reaching multiple sectors of our community; all possible because of your support!
