Our first residents settled the land which would later become Franklin County around 1800. The settlers noticed the abundant riches and diversity of land for which the area has become known. It’s rich farmland, the Cumberland Plateau, rolling hills and abundance of water resource natural and manmade. These settlers appreciated the natural resources just the same as Franklin County Residents appreciate them today. Franklin County is one of the oldest settlements founded by the settler moving west when they crossed the Appalachians. Franklin County is named in honor of entertainer, inventor and statesman Benjamin Franklin. The bill establishing Franklin County passed the Legislative Assembly of Tennessee on December 3, 1807. The original borders were Warren County to the North, Alabama to the south, Bledsoe County on the east and Bedford County on the west. Since 1807, Franklin County has re-established its borders thirteen times during which the counties of Moore, Coffee, Grundy and Marion have been formed from lands belonging to Franklin County. The land for the county seat is named in honor of James Winchester, a hero of the Indian and Revolutionary Wars. Home of four State of Tennessee’s governors is a reflection of the pride and leadership that citizens of Franklin County continue by tradition. The governors are Isham G. Harris, Albert S. Marks, Peter Turney and Henry Horton. Franklin County is also home to many historical figures of different ages. These include David Crockett, frontiersman, soldier, statesman whose first wife Polly Finley Crockett is buried at their original homestead in Belvidere. Dinah Shore, TV personality and entertainer, grew up in Franklin County and the main boulevard in Winchester is named in her honor. Legendary football coaches, Johnny Majors and Phillip Fulmer, from the University of Tennessee are from Franklin County. Two natives of Franklin County have been knighted by the Queen of England. Sir Francis Joseph Campbell founded Royal Normal College and Academy of Music in London, England and Sir John Templeton. Sir John Templeton was born in Winchester and was known for his philanthropic endeavors and pioneering the use of globally diversified mutual funds. Today, Franklin County is seen as a progressive, dynamic, and beautiful place to live, work and raise a family. Preparing for the future is the goal of the Chamber of Commerce, County and Cities. Working together makes the goal a reality. Industry, Commerce and Tourism are all thriving which improves the quality of life for the citizens of Franklin County.

Franklin County Chamber of Commerce is a service oriented notfor-profit “for” business. Chamber services and publications are possible because of the many volunteers and professionals who want to make our area an even better place to conduct business and live. The Franklin County Chamber has a professional board of directors consisting of eighteen professionals for various walks of life to coordinate the Program of Work, provide expertise in special areas of economic development, and provide operations management for our Chamber. Every publication, program, service, industry/retail recruitment the Chamber provides is for the benefit of our investing members and community. The Franklin County Chamber provides direct benefits such as member referrals, directories, market-area promotions, success seminars, and market information. The Franklin County Chamber provides indirect benefits by being involved in a variety of local and state issues, area economic development, and other community-oriented businesses and lifestyle projects. Chamber Overview Board of Directors: A Franklin County Chamber Board of Directors’ role is to contribute to the defining of the Chamber’s mission, governing, and fulfillment of that mission. Each Director pledges to carry out, in a trustworthy and diligent manner, all the duties and obligations inherent to their role as a member of the Board. The term of a Director is three years. All Chamber members are eligible to serve. Nominations are taken from the general membership annually, and must be submitted to the Executive Committee or Executive Director during October of each year. Chamber Overview Partners-In-Education

Franklin County Chamber of Commerce implemented the Partners-In -Education program in 1991. The Chamber’s first partner was the Franklin County Board of Education. Franklin County’s business and industry partners are listed below. Several businesses are partners with more than one school. The purpose of this program is to encourage businesses, industries, and schools to combine resources to benefit the school system and the children. Along the way, the businesses and industries discovered they reap rewards with the many thank you letters and gifts they receive from the students. Each year the Chamber hosts an event to honor the participating schools, businesses and industries. The following business/industry partners have made a commitment to support the Chamber’s efforts to enhance our children’s education and work hand-in-hand with our educators. Chamber Overview Leadership Franklin County Leadership Franklin County is a five month program designed to build and enhance leadership skills through interactive learning sessions at the local and state levels. Franklin County Leadership consists of Youth & Adult classes meeting together to explore leadership styles and methods to operate city and county leadership roles in growing communities. Youth class members are provided a mentor in their chosen career path to explore opportunities and challenges of their career choice. Chamber Overview Polly Crockett Festival

The Polly Crockett Festival is an annual event held every third weekend in September. The festival is named in honor of Polly Finley Crockett the first wife of historical frontiersman and statesman David “Davy” Crockett. The theme of the festival is “Behind every good man is a Great woman.” Polly and Davy made their home in Franklin County and Polly Crockett’s resting place is in Belvidere, TN. Exhibitors from many states come to participate in the weekend event that features arts, crafts, food vendors, kids areas and much, much more.

The Bear Trace

IN MEMORY OF PAM LEDFORD The Bear Trace Classic is an annual fundraising event hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. The tournament is held in memory of past Chamber of Commerce President, Community Advocate and volunteer Pam Ledford. The Bear Trace at Tims Ford State Park is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course and part of the Award Winning Tennessee Golf Trail. A day of fun is always on the agenda. Over 134 have participated in the scramble coming from over 3 states and representing industries and businesses from the local, state and regional levels.

City Mayors The city of Cowan, located eastsoutheast of Winchester, the county seat of Franklin County, developed around the N & C Railroad station in the early 1850’s when the little Tennessee village was a passenger stop on the main line between Nashville & Chattanooga. It also was a spur line for rail service to Tracy City, Monteagle, Sewanee, and a base for the Cowan-Sherwood Pusher District. A Pusher engine is a helper engine that gives assistance to the overburdened locomotives as they ascend the Cumberland Mountain to reach the tunnel. The tunnel is 2,228 feet in length and one of the earliest and the longest in the state. It continues to be indispensable to rail transportation and serves the CSX railroad today. As you approach Cowan, a sense of the past surrounds you. The Cowan Railroad Museum is located in the former depot building in the middle of the downtown railroad park. Friends, neighbors, and visitors sit and chat on the porch of the reconstructed log court house and watch the trains passing through town. Businesses and restaurants are thriving downtown and other buildings are being renovated to house additional businesses. Cowan is home to several specialty and gift shop and art galleries as well as a variety of restaurants where visitors may enjoy a leisurely meal. Another site of interest is the Welcome Center at the restored Texaco Station where visitors can learn about Cowan and tour the museum housed there. Cowan is also the site for the Railroad Days Festival held annually in June, the Antiquarian Book Fair held annually in July, the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce’s Polly Crockett Festival held annually in September and the Cowan Christmas Parade held annually on the first Saturday in December. Decherd was founded in the mid 1800’s. Decherd owes its beginning to the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad which was completed in 1851 through what was to become the town of Decherd. The town is named for Peter S. Decherd, who gave the right-of-way to the railroad company with the provision that a depot be located near the “Decherd Plantation”. Mr. Decherd came to Franklin County from Virginia in the early 1800’s. In 1831 he moved from Winchester to a large tract of land about two miles northwest. He and his brothers developed the land into the plantation. The town was originally incorporated in 1868. From 1885 to 1901 the town was not officially incorporated due to the “Four

Mile Law,” which allowed for the selling of liquor within four miles of schools in incorporated communities only. The town was re-chartered by the General Assembly on April 22, 1901. Governor Benton McMillin signed the private act creating the town. Bedford C. McGill became mayor in June of that year, and R. Ross Powell was the first city recorder. The town also had one town marshal. The population in 1900 was about 1000. In 1890 James W. Terrill, with the help of local citizens, built and established Terrill College on the site where the Decherd Elementary now stands. The college closed in 1903 due to a lack of interest in higher education. Some of the early settlers in Decherd were William Simons, Simpson West, Carroll Walker, John March, Aaron Lynch, Cyrus Barnes, and Dan Champion. The Martin and Tucker families were also among the first settlers. The railroad played an important part in the prosperity of the town. It became the terminal for branch lines going to Huntsville, Alabama; Fayetteville, Lewisburg, and Columbia, Tennessee. Several trains left Decherd each day going to these towns. Two passenger trains were also in operation at this time. At one time there were eight passenger trains stopping at the Decherd depot. Trains still pass through Decherd today, but the depot is gone, along with the passenger trains. Decherd is proud of its two largest employers, NISSAN and Henley Supply & Millworks. Nissan opened in 1997, employs over 1,500 employees and are in the process of expanding. Henley Supply and Millworks has been in operation for many years employing a number of employees. Decherd is home to three schools; North Middle School, Decherd Elementary and Good Shepherds Catholic PK-8th grades. Decherd Lions Club has been active since 1957 and currently has 18 members. The club provides glasses for citizens in need and eye screenings for Decherd students. Our little town has two parks, Hank Weddington and John L. Sanders. These parks provide picnic area, walking trails, basketball goals, playground equipment, both a Little League Field and a Babe Ruth Field for the benefit of our citizens. Our city has over ten churches, among the oldest are the First United Methodist, Decherd Cumberland Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church of Decherd and Decherd Church of Christ. The Civil War dominated life in Decherd during the war years. No major battles were fought in the area, but several skirmishes were fought over control of the railroad and Elk River. Federal General Don Buell established headquarters in Decherd in August, 1862 before moving north to encounter Confederate forces under the command of General Braxton Bragg. In 1863, Federals under Colonel John T. Wilder drove a Confederate force from Decherd and destroyed about 300 yards of the railroad between Decherd and Cowan. Telegraph and commissary stores of the Confederate forces were burned in the raid. Decherd is proud of its past history, but a city must not dwell on the past. City Mayors Incorporated in 1948, Estill Springs is the second largest town in historic Franklin County. Before 1840, the Estill family had acquired considerable property in and around the area that bears their name today. Frank Estill offered the railroad company a right-of-way for the construction of a railroad track through his land. After the railroad was completed about 1850, there was much attraction to the area. The mineral springs were probably first discovered by the Cherokee Indians who inhabited the area and hunted along the Elk River. Originally, the springs contained sulfur, chalybeate, limestone, and freestone water. Those remaining springs are still the source of the town’s water supply. Thus the name… Estill Springs. Spas and summer resorts soon located near the mineral springs and became popular with summer vacationers in pursuit of the reputed curative qualities of the water. Mr. Estill had deeded the springs to the town, therefore making this an ideal location for a summer resort. One of the regular summer visitors was the wife of General Douglas McArthur. At the beginning of World War II, the construction of Camp Forrest brought about a slight economic growth in the community. In 1940, Highway 41A was completed. With the location of Arnold Engineering Development Complex near Tullahoma on the former Camp Forrest site in 1950, Estill Springs experienced much growth with the influx of new residents. There is lakefront property available, Estill Springs is surrounded by lakes and recreation sites are being developed by TVA. Estill Springs’ residents take great pride in their churches. Presently there are ten churches within the city limits, and they cover most major denominations. Estill Springs’ first public school was a frame building. When this school burned, a new brick building containing six rooms and an auditorium was created and later expanded to accommodate the growing population. Since 1977 elementary students in grades K-6 attend Rock Creek Elementary School. Only the remodeled gym of the old school building remains as the Young and Moore Community Center. Motlow Community College is 10 miles away and University of TN Space Institute is six mile away and we have a new Franklin County High School. Civic organizations active in Estill Springs today include the Boy Scouts of America, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge #651, and Homemakers clubs. Other active community groups are the Saddle Club, Little League baseball, girls softball, Coon Hunters Club, and the Estill Springer’s Square Dance Club. Recently completed is the Estill Springs Memory Lane, a fully lighted walking trail complete with benches, water fountains, bird houses, and a sign dedicated to former citizens of Estill Springs and Greenway Walking Trail is 1 2/10 miles along shoreline of Tims Ford Lake with historical markers. Estill Springs takes pride and comfort in its Police and Fire Department. The fire department has all the latest equipment and is striving to certify all volunteer firemen. The police department has a very dedicated group of officers who strive to provide twenty-four hour service to the residents. We also have two excellent hospitals, six miles away and two ambulance

stations. The Mayor and Board of Alderman past and present take great pride in maintaining the lowest tax and water rates in Franklin County. This continues to draw many new residents to the area. If you are looking for a small town atmosphere with a touch of business district, surrounded by a beautiful lake (Tims Ford Lake), opportunities for great outdoor enjoyment, friendly people, pure clean air and accessibility to industry, let me take this opportunity to invite you to drive through, come by for a visit or, better yet, come make our hometown your hometown!

The town of Huntland is a beautiful rural community in Middle Tennessee located in the southwest part of Franklin County. Huntland lies 12 miles south of Winchester, the county seat; 22 miles west of Fayetteville, the Lincoln County seat; 35 miles north of Huntsville, Alabama; and 100 miles south of Nashville, Tennessee’s state capitol. Huntland is governed by five alderman and meet every fourth Monday of each month There is also a planning and zoning commission and an industrial board. Huntland has one of the county’s high schools, established in the very early 1900’s. Huntland School educates students K12, and presently has about 600 students enrolled. Huntland is proud of its elementary, middle school, and high school. They excel in academics as well as sports, football, baseball, and basketball teams and their many accomplishments. And we are proud to have such a family oriented school in our community. Water for the town is obtained from three wells, and an up to date filtration plant. In the center of the community lies a nice city park, community center and fire hall. Local bank enhances the town’s business section that includes about twenty businesses. There is one lumber company, and one empty plant located in the town’s industrial area. A medical and dental clinic to ensure of residents health care provisions close to home. Huntland has a Dollar General Store and a newly remodeled bank building serving as the City Hall and Water Department. Every year for the last 64 years, the Huntland Lions Club have held an annual 4th of July celebration which still continues today. Partly surrounded by beautiful mountains and fertile farmlands, Huntland is a great place for people who enjoy small town way of life. We encourage you to visit our lovely town.

Arnold Engineering Development Complex Arnold Engineering Development Complex is the world’s largest and most complex collection of flight simulation test facilities. The 4,000 acres that comprise AEDC are part of the 40,000 acre Arnold Air Force Base. The base was dedicated June 25, 1951 by President Harry S. Truman. AEDC has tested virtually every high performance aerospace system the Department of Defense has developed since the mid-1950’s. There are 121 active duty military, 264 government civilian and 2,006 contract employees. World Renown Manufacturing Franklin County’s manufacturing base is broad and known worldwide. The world produces no better products than here in Franklin County. Nissan

opened it’s powertrain assembly plant in Decherd, Tennessee, and began production in May 1997. Today the plant manufactures all the engines for the complete lineup of Nissan and Infiniti vehicles produced in the United State. The plant has the capacity to produce 950,000 engines, 1.1 million crankshaft forgings and 192,000 cyclinderblock castings annually. Forges crankshafts, and cylinder block casting operations will began in 2008. Starting in 2013 the Decherd plant will produce the electric motor for the Nissan LEAF—the world’s first all electric, zero-emission vehicle designed for the mass market. Once the new assembly line is completed the plant will have the capacity to produce up to 150,000 electric motors annually for Nissan LEAFs. The electric motor assembly line represents the 5th addition to Nissan, Decherd operations. The assembly line will be located in the existing facility using 100,000 square feet of the 1.2 million square foot facility.

Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC)

is the most advanced and largest complex of flight simulation test facilities in the world. The center operates 58 aerodynamic and propulsion wind tunnels, rocket and turbine engine test cells as seen in the photo on the right, space environmental chambers, arc heaters, ballistic ranges and other specialized units. Twenty-seven of the center's test units have capabilities unmatched elsewhere in the United States; 14 are unique in the world. AEDC is an Air Force Materiel Command organization and an important national resource.

Hi-Tech Mold & Engineering S.E. Inc.

opened in 1998 offering the southern states a mold builder and a premier change and repair facility. Hi-Tech puts a premium on utilizing the latest CAD software and techniques. From concept to final design they pride ourselves on innovative ideas and the engineers that apply them. Baxter Enterprises began operating as a tool tryout, support, and test facility to Hi-Tech Mold & Engineering in southern middle Tennessee in 1998. Today, Baxter Enterprises has grown into a fullservice, tier1 and tier2 supplier to the Plastics Industry, with facilities covering over 400,000 sq ft, and employing over 240 people. It houses 25 Injection Molding Machines with a range from 85 to 3500 tons.

Tennessee Three Star Community Franklin County Tennessee Civil War Sesquicentennial

The cost of war, the price of freedom, a state reunited. Yet, out of the ashes of war, Tennesseans black and white built a new society where slavery was abolished and citizenship redefined. As such, Congress has designated the state as the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area. Tennessee's landscape contains many powerful reminders of the Civil War from battlefields and monuments in places such as Shiloh and Chattanooga, to the sites along the Civil War Trails stretching from Memphis to the Tri-Cities. Franklin County celebrated this historical event with the launch of the Franklin County Civil War Trail brochure. The launch of this publication was the result of a year and half research by the Franklin County Civil War Brochure Committee under the Guidance of Executive Director Judy Taylor and Dr. Michael Bradley. The public was invited to celebrate this event at the Chamber of Commerce’s Monthly Membership Connection that presented the history of Franklin County during the Civil War. Tennessee Three Star Community Franklin County, Tennessee Certified Three Star Community

The Three-Star Program sets high standards and incentives like no other state-run program in the nation. It has been hailed as a best practices model among community development initiatives assisting both rural and urban communities in developing strategic economic and community development plans that meet the needs and challenges of a global economy. In order to receive the certification, communities are required to meet a number of criteria

in organizational, community, business, education and work force development categories. Incentives for receiving the certification include identification on all Fast-Track infrastructure and job training applications; eligibility for matching grants, if criteria set by ECD are met; and the advantage of earning points in the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) process. Franklin County is situated in South Central Tennessee on the Alabama-Tennessee border. It is bordered by Lincoln, Moore, Coffee, Grundy, and Marion Counties in Tennessee and by Jackson and Madison Counties in Alabama. For most of its residents, Huntsville, Alabama lies 45 miles to the southwest; Chattanooga some 65 miles to the east; Nashville about 80 miles to the northwest. The county is served by CSX Transportation, Inc. and is serviced by US Highway 64, State Highway 41A, State Highway 127, State Highway 56, State Highway 130 and State Highway 50. Interstate 24, connecting Nashville and Chattanooga, passes by the county at Monteagle (Exit 134). A 4-lane connector road Highway 64 (Exit 127) also accesses the county. Interstate 65, connecting Nashville and Birmingham, lies some 50 miles to the west. Franklin County is located geographically at 86 degrees 6' longitude, 35 degrees 11" latitude, and 985 ft. above sea level. The county covers 555 square miles.

State Industrial Training Service Available Franklin County Public School System and Franklin County affords outstanding educational opportunities at all levels. Public and private schools offer strong college preparatory, vocational, and technical programs. A variety of higher education opportunities are available within driving distance of Winchester. These include two of the leading academic institutions offering graduate programs, a community college, and two area vocational technical schools. Franklin County Schools offer a variety of enrichment programs that take students beyond the normal curriculum. Our elementary schools have achieved “Exemplary Schools” status awarded by the Tennessee Department of Education and have received one of the “Ten Great Schools” awards. The “Basic Skills First” program focuses the efforts of elementary teachers on reading, language arts, and mathematics. Our Excel program gives gifted students opportunities for enrichment. Music, art, and physical education teachers promote creativity and good physical health. Special education gives help to our special needs students. At the secondary level, enrichment is provided for college preparatory courses. An “honors” mathematics program begins at the ninth grade level and allows students to complete calculus in high school. English classes are grouped so students can be challenged at their own levels. Franklin County students compete successfully in the Chattanooga Regional Science Fair. Annually, over one million dollars in scholarships are awarded in public high schools. Academic enrichment in music, drama, and art broaden the cultural awareness of our students and community.

Many of our students begin a vocation immediately after graduation. Introduction to trades and equipment begins during middle school and helps develop leadership and teamwork skills that will contribute to their success. Through the vocational educational focus, training is available in trades and through industrial education, childcare, health occupations, consumer science, agriculture, office occupations, marketing, and industrial arts. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has accredited Franklin County High School and the middle schools. The system’s professional staff consists of 450 teachers with over 50% holding a Master’s degree or above. Our teachers are dedicated, caring people who work hard for the children of Franklin County. Accredited private schools that offer classes in kindergarten through grade twelve are also available. There is close coordination between the public and private schools. There is a major intangible resource that makes a positive impact on the lives of the students in Franklin County. FRANKLIN COUNTY ADULT ACTIVITY CENTER—NEW LIFE (Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities / Education/ Training for Adults) The Franklin County Adult Activity Center is located on Hundred Oaks Street in Winchester. ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAM The Franklin County School System provides an Adult Education Program for adults who are interested in completing their elementary and secondary education. The program functions year round with both daytime and evening classes. It is an adult centered learning environment with flexible scheduling. The Adult Education Program provides English for speakers of other languages. Many of these students also prepare for U.S. Citizenship. TN REHABILITATION CENTER The Tennessee Vocational Training Center in Winchester is one in a network of facilities operated by the state. Its purpose is to provide Rehabilitation Services to persons with disabilities. These services include vocational evaluation, training in the workshop, and placement in jobs. Education TENNESSEE TECHNOLOGY CENTER AT SHELBYVILLE The Tennessee Technology Center at Shelbyville was the first of 26 such centers across the state and made possible by legislation enacted by the 1963 General Assembly of Tennessee. The Center is governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents and is staffed with highly qualified individuals who are specialists in their fields. Each occupational program is equipped with modern tools, machinery, and materials necessary to provide high quality instruction, which is both realistic and practical. The Center is accredited by the accrediting Commission of the Council on Occupational Education. The primary mission of the Tennessee Technology Center at Shelbyville is to meet the occupational and technical educational needs of the citizens and business/industry in a seven county area in southern Middle Tennessee. The Center fulfills this mission by providing instructional programs designed to prepare persons for employment. Programs are also designed to add to skills and knowledge of workers already employed. Full-time preparatory classes meet six hours daily between the hours of 7:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Part-time preparatory classes meet Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings from 5:45 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Supplemental offerings and schedules can be offered in some cases.

MOTLOW COMMUNITY STATE COLLEGE

Motlow State Community College is a public, multicampus college offering certificates, associate degrees, and flexible learning pathways in southern Middle Tennessee. For over 40 years, Motlow has proven to be a student-centered institution that promotes academic excellence as well as personal and professional growth. The main campus is located in Moore County on 187 acres of land donated by the late Senator Reagor Motlow and family. In addition to the main campus, the College boasts three learning centers in Fayetteville, McMinnville and Smyrna to serve over 540,000 citizens in Motlow’s 11-county service area including: Bedford,Cannon,Coffee,Dekalb,Franklin,Lincoln,Moore, Rutherford,VanBuren,Warren and White The wide range of quality academic programs offered at Motlow results from the steady expansion of degree programs to provide alternatives for changing educational needs. THE PEN FOUNDATION The Partners in Educational Excellence is a nonprofit organization that provides funding and programs to enhance the educational opportunities of children living in Franklin County. All members of the board are volunteers. The PEN Foundation is one of the requirements to be a Three Star Community. Funding for educational programs come from United Way, Nissan North America, Decherd, and private donations. We provide a yearly summer program housed at Decherd Elementary which is open to all elementary age children free of charge. Tims Ford Lake is a 10,700 acre highland lake created by the construction of Tims Ford Dam on the headwaters of the Elk River in 1970. After severe flooding within the Elk River Basin, the Tennessee Valley Authority constructed the Tims Ford Dam in 1970. The dam and reservoir not only provide flood control for the area, but also provide unlimited recreational opportunities. Tims Ford State Park is situated on the lake about 11 miles west of Winchester off State Highway 50. Tims Ford Lake is one of the most picturesque lakes in Tennessee, and is regarded as a top bass fishing lake, as well as for recreational/ boating fun. Year-round fishing can also provide a substantial yield of bluegill, catfish, and crappie. Year-round fishermen can also find a substantial yield of small mouth bass, rockfish, bluegill, catfish, and crappie for their enjoyment. A valid Tennessee fishing license is required for all anglers over 16 years of age. Several marinas and boat launching facilities are located around the lake. The Perimeter Trail offers gorgeous views and excellent terrain for hiking, mountain biking and running along the bluff of the Cumberland Plateau. The trail can be accessed within a 5 minute walk from central campus. It features beautiful overlooks, interesting geological features, two lakes, and plenty of upland deciduous forest. Caving and climbing sites are easily accessed from the trail. The trail, which follows the bluff line for 20 miles, is generously supported by the Roberts Family. Access points on the trail include Morgan's Steep, Proctor's Hall, Green's View, the University Gates, and the Cross. Certain areas are open only for hiking, including Shakerag Hollow and the section between the Cross and Morgan's Steep. The trail is open for day hikes to all individuals.

As the story goes, a circuit-riding minister chanced upon this rugged piece of Franklin County real estate in the late 1800s and was so awestruck by the cathedral-like beauty of the narrow gorge that he declared it deserved a biblical name. The preacher, it is said, stood in the gorge's bottom — a limestone bowl, 50 yards wide, where water shoots out of bowling-ball-size holes and foot-wide cracks in the rock during heavy rain — and peered up at cliffs 200 feet high on both sides. He named the site the Walls of Jericho. And so it has been known ever since. Except for the distant drone of a westbound jetliner cruising through the blue sky and high feathery clouds, a recent visit to the site is similar to what that 19th-century preacher saw. Unlike the manmade wall that came tumbling down, according to the Bible's book of Joshua, these opposing faces of rock aren't likely to do the same, barring a cataclysmic earthquake. Thanks to the Tennessee and Alabama chapters of The Nature Conservancy, the property is now saved from development for the enjoyment of future generations. As of today, hiking and horse trails leading into the 21,453 acres — 12,510 in Alabama and 8,943 in Tennessee — officially open to the public. The official Ribbon Cutting was held on October 25 th 2005 and the Ribbon was cut by Governor of the State of Tennessee Phil Bredesen. This area is multiple-use area. Unlike most of our Wildlife Management Areas where the prime activity is hunting, this area will be available to visitors who like to hike or ride horses. The property includes streams such as Turkey Creek and Hurricane Creek that are headwaters of the Paint Rock River, home to 17 varieties of rare mussels. If you like to fish, grab your tackle box and fishing rod and take time out to try your luck at Woods Reservoir in Franklin County. Located on Arnold Air Force Base, the lake is noted for its big bass and Muskie. It contains 4,000 acres of water with a 75-mile shoreline. Fishing conditions improve as fall approaches, and water temperatures begin to drop. It can be reached from AEDC/ UTSI exit 117 from I-24.

T e nne ss ee Wi l dl i fe Ma nag em e nt A reas  AEDC- WMA is 32,000 acres: An outstanding WMA known for excellent deer hunting, but also good turkey and small game hunting. It also has waterfowl hunting on Woods Reservoir. Lots of hardwoods, pine stands, and food plots on AEDC, including sunflower fields. Excellent dove fields prepared for first segment of dove seasons. AEDC also has a checking station.  Bear Hollow Mountain WMA is 15,000 acres. This is a mountainous WMA that includes lots of hardwood trees, many foodplots, and regenerating clear cuts. There is a nearby private campground. This WMA is for both hunters, hiker, and even horseback riders. A walking and horse trail runs through the area. It includes scenic views. Good deer and turkey hunting here if you can handle the mountains. Good small game hunting too, especially for squirrel.  Mingo Swamp WMA is 370 acres. Open with statewide seasons. Waterfowl hunters sometimes sneak up on a few birds here.  Owl Hollow Mill WMA is 3,000 acres. Open with statewide seasons.

HISTORIC SITES About 43,000 folks live in Franklin County today mostly because they just like it here. Many folks have deep roots but some roots are new. One thing they all have in common is that Franklin County is “home” and they are proud of it. There is a lot to do and see around here…different places, different faces. History has dealt Franklin County a unique hand. For instance, we have a mountain - a small mountain, but a mountain, nonetheless. On top of our mountain is one of the finest universities in the nation, or in the world, for that matter. Folks in these parts usually just call it Sewanee, but officially it is Sewanee: University of the South

A l l Sa i nts Cha pe l It is such a beautiful place, too. Built with colorful Tennessee Sandstone, it reminds most folks of a quaint English village. In the heart of the campus stands All Saints’ Chapel and Shapard Tower. You can read the University’s history in the stained glass windows in the chapel or marvel at a Sunday afternoon performance of the 56 bell Leonidas Memorial Carillon contained in the 143-foot high Shapard Tower. Sewanee literally rings in all its glory. Sewanee has produced 24 Rhodes Scholars, proportionally more than almost any other college or university in the United States. The University publishes the Sewanee Review, the oldest literary quarterly in the nation. They rank near the top nationally in the production of NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. C owa n Ra il ro a d M use um If you are into trains, Cowan has just the thing…they took their old train station, spruced it up, made a little park out of the surrounding grounds, parked an antique locomotive next door and made the place into a museum. There are lots of old train parts, lots of old stories, lots of good times to have at the Cowan Railroad Museum. Take a picnic lunch and eat in the park. Watch the modern CSX trains, with their pusher engines, as they travel through the town and on to the Cowan railroad tunnel built in the 1850’s going to the eastern part of our nation. F a ll s Mi l l In the southwest corner of the county is another great spot for a picnic…in the little community of Old Salem. This area of the county was one of the first areas to be settled in the late 1700’s, and is where industry in the county first flourished. The only remaining mill, Falls Mill, still grinds grain by the old method - with a water-powered grindstone. The Mill has one of the largest water wheels operating in the country. Upstairs from the mill, the museum traces the varied past of the beautiful old mill as well as houses antique machinery and looms used in another era. Today, still a working mill, you can purchase stone-ground flour and meal, get a cool drink of water from an old oaken bucket, or wade in the old mill’s stream. Po l ly C rock et t G rav es it e David Crockett and his first wife, Polly Finlay, settled with their children on a homestead a few miles east of the Maxwell Community in Franklin County in 1812. Polly Crockett died in 1815 following her husband’s return from the Creek War. An access road and small park denote her gravesite and was a Franklin County Bicentennial Commission Project. Tennessee Historical markers for the gravesite and “Kaintuck”, David’s homestead, are located on U.S. Highway 64 near Belvidere.

R e bel ’s Re st Major R. Fairbanks, one of the founders and a trustee of the University of the South, built Rebel’s Rest, the oldest house in Sewanee, in 1886. The Fairbanks family lived in the house until 1963, when the University took over the building for use in entertaining and as a guesthouse. It stands on the former site of Bishop Leonidas Polk’s home and is noted by a Tennessee Historical marker.
