BESPOKE PEARL ROLLS-ROYCE CULLINAN An Exclusive Paint Shade unlike any Other

| BY SOMNATH CHATTERJEE

R

olls-Royce is no stranger to bespoke one-off cars and its latest project is a Cullinan SUV with a rather unique paint shade. Called as ‘The Pearl Cullinan’ it is also the first Bespoke project to be done in Dubai and which brings the bespoke Goodwood experience to clients here.

The Pearl Rose finish also comes with a single coachline, applied by hand in Rose Gold paint, to match the rose gold-plated Spirit of Ecstasy mascot. The rose gold theme also extends to the Bespoke tread plates, which are revealed on each of the four door sills upon opening.

‘The Pearl Cullinan’ was commissioned in early 2022 by a longstanding Rolls-Royce client, to mark his father’s 90th birthday. Regional Director, César Habib, and Bespoke Lead Designer, Michelle Lusby, were originally introduced to the father with the purpose of understanding his passions and life story; these meetings provided valuable insights to inform the design direction for the commission.

The interior meanwhile comes with two different leather colors. The front seats, where the father prefers to travel as a passenger – are finished in his favorite Cashmere Grey. In reference to the family’s heritage, the rear seats are trimmed in Ardent Red which takes inspiration from the colour of the material on which pearls are presented to customers. Similarly, the burr walnut veneer echoes the wooden presentation boxes in which pearls are traditionally handed over to customers upon purchase.

As mentioned above, this project was commissioned by a son as a birthday present to his father hence, the fascia motif features the Arabic symbol for ‘father’ inlaid in stainless steel. The highlight here is the fact that this is the highest amount of mother-of-pearl ever seen in a Bespoke Rolls-Royce motor car, including central rotary dial and clock surround. The bespoke paint finish is inspired by the colors of most prized pearl in the owner’s collection and paint specialists at the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood used carefully selected pigments to replicate a delicate hint of pink rarely found in natural pearls. Not surprisingly, it took around 30 different iterations to perfect the paint and these were pre-checked under daylight simulation lamps in the Atelier at Goodwood, then sent to the client to make sure the color was correct when viewed under the Middle Eastern sun. The paint also underwent extensive technical testing to ensure it will remain unaltered by heat or UV light over its lifetime. 14 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2023

Bespoke embroidery detailing includes ‘RR’ monograms in Rose Gold thread on the headrests, and rear seat inserts in Grace White, inspired by the symmetrical growth patterns of an oyster shell, and angled at the same precise 55 degrees as the veneer finish the changes. Other details spill over to the rear Picnic Tables which circular pattern inspired by traditional Arabic design that draws the eye inwards to a central point. Each tabletop is then inlaid with 1,351 separate pieces of mother-of- pearl, every one individually selected and placed by hand in the surrounding burr walnut marquetry and sealed with clear lacquer. The center rotary dial is also finished with mother-ofpearl while the Bespoke Starlight Headliner shows the sky as it appeared on the night and at the very place the commissioning client’s father was born. As far as birthday presents go, a bespoke Rolls-Royce is as good as it gets!

Elizabeth II (1984), the Sultan of Oman (1981), and the King of Bahrain (2003), and provides bespoke and military tailoring. No matter the occasion, the experts design, cut, and make all the bespoke clothing at number 10 Savile Row -- from business suits, overcoats and smoking jackets to equestrian clothing, and more relaxed leisure garments, Dege & Skinner offer understated, timeless elegance with hours of craftsmanship dedicated to the process. Their expert cutters and tailors spend a minimum of between 60-80 manhours to produce a 3-piece bespoke suit, 55 hours for a 2-piece suit and approximately 40 hours for a bespoke coat. It’s no surprise then, that their customers are always impeccably dressed. Managing Director, William Skinner, tells us more about Savile Row’s leading tailoring house.

& SKINNER Heritage and Elegance on Savile Row | BY FELICITY CARTER PHOTOS PROVIDED BY THE BRAND

Renowned as one of the finest bespoke tailors of London’s famous Savile Row, Dege & Skinner was established in 1865, and impressively is still family-owned today. With a rich heritage it also has the royal seal of approval, as it’s obtained three royal warrants of appointment, Queen

Tell us about the heritage of Dege & Skinner? Established over 150 years ago in 1865, Dege & Skinner is one of Savile Row’s foremost and most respected bespoke tailoring houses. We’re one of only two that remain in family-ownership – I’m the fifth generation of the Skinner family to manage the business – and we were also the first to incorporate an in-house bespoke shirt-making service, which continues to this day. Number 10 Savile Row in central London is home to our sole retail shop, as well as our bespoke tailoring workshop, which operates from the basement and is visible from the street pavement. This workshop houses our dedicated team of world-class makers, each with individual expertise in coat making, trouser making, waistcoat (vest) making or shirt making. All of Dege & Skinner’s bespoke tailoring and bespoke shirts are cut and made here at Number 10. To complement the bespoke offering, we launched a ready-to-wear collection in 2016 and that sells very well online via our website. What’s the USP of the brand? Being family-owned, customer care and word of mouth reputation are crucial for our continued success. Customers tell us they genuinely appreciate the close, trusted and personal relationship that develops between themselves and

their dedicated Cutter. And with an in-house bespoke shirt department based inside the shop itself, customers really seem to enjoy being able to order shirts along with their bespoke outerwear and seeing shirt patterns being cut to order at Number 10, in the very heart of London’s prestigious Savile Row. Visible from the street pavement, the workshop provides a constant source of interest amongst Londoners and tourists, who are mostly unused to seeing artisan makers creating beautiful items of clothing by hand in the centre of a capital city. Savile Row continues to thrill in its uniqueness!

Sarah and her colleagues also work on the Tudor-inspired uniforms of The King’s Body Guard of The Yeoman of the Guard and The Royal Company of Archers, which are widely seen at numerous high profile events attended by His Majesty The King in England and Scotland. It’s for the work on these specific historic uniforms that Dege & Skinner holds the treasured Royal Warrant.

As Sarah’s own career illustrates so clearly, investment in training to the level required of one of Savile Row’s foremost bespoke tailors is business critical to a century and a half old business such as ours and indeed, the bespoke tailoring trade in general. We’re currently training three apprentices, all of who coincidentally happen to be women, working across three different areas of expertise.

What are the core pillars of the company? We truly are a family business, and that ethos runs through the entire team. Our firmly held core values of quality, trust, investment and training are at the centre of everything we do. Tell us about the royal connection and the V&A collection? We’re also world renowned for making military uniforms so often seen during royal and globally televised events, such as Royal Weddings and the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and more recently, His Majesty King Charles III. It might surprise you that our military uniform expert has been here at Dege & Skinner for her entire career, just over 40 years! During her distinguished career to date Sarah has worked on some of the most striking and recognisable pieces of military tailoring for which Great Britain is world-renowned. The V&A Museum even included a piece in the 2014 exhibition titled ‘What Is Luxury’? That same piece is now part of the official archive at the Museum. You might have seen Prince Harry’s wedding day frock coat when he married Meghan Markle in 2018 and the miniature versions made for the attending Page Boys. Or perhaps, HRH Prince Louis’ much admired doeskin tunic that he wore to the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III. Or the miniature military replica uniforms made at the specific request from The Queen and worn by the four Page Boys who attended her at the Coronation.

What is QEST? It’s 40 years since military tailoring specialist Sarah Wilkinson joined Dege & Skinner and her sewing and embroidery skills remain a rarity, even here on Savile Row. Joining the company in August 1983 aged just sixteen years old, Sarah successfully applied for a scholarship from the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) in 1993, enabling her to learn metal thread embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework, based at Hampton Court. These rare skills bring a unique level of expertise to the team here at Dege & Skinner.

What have been your career highlights to date? For me personally, there are a lot! Instigating trunk shows in the Far East, travelling to see clients in Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan whilst still maintaining and expanding the bespoke Trunk Shows to the USA, Europe, Middle East and in the UK. Taking on the uniform and evening wear requirements of the Royal Company of Archers, the King’s Body Guard for Scotland. Which markets do you best in, and where are you looking to expand? We somewhat pioneered the concept of Savile Row taking its trade over to the USA back in the 1960’s, when my father, the current Chairman was tasked with building up trade across the pond by his own father. So overseas Trunk Shows still contribute a significant level of trade for us and we’re now scheduling regular trunk shows across America, Europe, Asia, Middle East and Far East. Most recently we’ve seen increased demand for our services in Hong Kong and Singapore, with Japan continuing to deliver a strong order book for our bespoke departments. If the demand is there, we can travel to meet it!

Making clothes for the singer Michael Jackson, David Bowie, US president George HW Bush and author Tom Clancy. Over the course of my tenure at Dege & Skinner the company has trained 19 apprentices, the majority of whom are still working for us or are still in the Savile Row Community. This helps to maintain the skills required for bespoke tailoring and shirt making. The company celebrated its 150th Anniversary in 2015 and the introduction of the Dege & Skinner Ready to Wear collection in 2016.

Cartier Beautés du Monde Obi necklace

ETERNAL

Splendor

Cartier Obi necklace beautifully embodies the rich culture of Japan—a land that has captivated the Maison for over a century. At the heart of its creation lie eight mesmerizing cabochon-cut emeralds, including a magnificent 12.53-carat jewel sourced from Zambia. The Art Deco-inspired geometry of the motif, accentuated by carefully placed caliber-cut rubies, creates an intriguing contrast with the smooth roundness of the cabochons. To add further allure, delicate custom-cut onyx inserts enhance the angles and accentuate the necklace’s voluminous expression, adding a sense of depth to the entire piece. Balancing harmoniously in Cartier’s signature chromatic symphony, the necklace features a captivating blend of green, red, and black—a daring combination that has been the Maison’s hallmark since the early 20th century. 21 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2023

I

n collaboration with its partner, Agenhor SA, H. Moser & Cie. developed the Endeavour Chinese Calendar Limited Edition. Produced in a limited quantity of only 100 pieces, the timepiece is presented in a red gold case with a diameter of 40mm and a height of 13mm. Combining the Chinese lunisolar calendar with the solar-only Gregorian calendar, the timepiece symbolizes the union of two different cultures and measurements. The watch displays the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac alongside the moon phases, showing the harmonious existence of both calendars. A true technical feat - displaying the months and days of the Chinese calendar, the days of the Gregorian calendar, the moon phases and the signs of the zodiac - the elegant and minimalist aesthetic of the timepiece makes it user-friendly to read and operate. As the two calendars differ, H. Moser & Cie. and Agenhor SA therefore undertook a major challenge in choosing to make a timepiece that is able to precisely indicate all the lunisolar calendar information for ev-

ery 12 years without any corrections. While other watches require manual corrections over a period of time, this piece features movement that doesn’t require any external intervention. Featuring crescent-shaped windows on both sides of the dial of the watch indicating the Chinese lunisolar months and Chinese lunisolar days, the dial also features two windows indicate the Chinese lunisolar year and the associated animal zodiac at 12 o’clock and a small seconds display on top of the Gregorian calendar window at 6 o’clock. The color is one of Midnight Blue fumé with a sunburst pattern with a sapphire crystal dome and comes with a hand-stitched brown alligator leather strap. The see-through caseback gives a window into H. Moser & Cie.’s HMC 200 automatic in-house movement, the HMC 210 calibre, as well as its solid 18K gold oscillating weight engraved with the H. Moser hallmark. Pricing for the H. Moser & Cie. Endeavour Chinese Calendar Limited Edition is $97,500.

everso Stories was created in 2021 to celebrate the 90th anniversary of its most celebrated timepiece and in 2023 the exhibition comes to Manhattan with its North American debut. It seems New York is a right fit for the Reverso’s Art Deco origins which is steeped in design also. After all, this was a time piece created by Jaeger-LeCoultre first in 1931 while with the nine decades, the Reverso has seen more than 50 different calibers, while its blank metal flip side has since been decorated with enamel, engravings, or gemstones. Located at IRON 23, the exhibition will happen between November 3 to November 22, 2023. The ‘Reverso Stories’ exhibition also happens just ahead of the grand opening of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s new flagship boutique on Madison Avenue. The exhibition revolves around four key themes: Story of an Icon, Style and Design, Innovation, and Craftsmanship. There is also a digital art installation by Korean artist Yiyun Kang;

plus a space devoted to the video series ‘In the Making’, which reveals the facets of the 180 crafts practiced in the Manufacture; a room dedicated to Japanese artist Hokusai, whose works have been reproduced on Reverso timepieces; the 1931 Café serving an Art Deco-inspired menu; and handson watchmaking Discovery Workshops within the Atelier d’Antoine. Elsewhere, the exhibits will include the 2023 Reverso models launched at Watches and Wonders, and two new Reverso Tribute Enamel models that will be launched during the New York season of ‘Reverso Stories’. Amongst the new releases, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Chronograph comes in a stainless-steel version while there is also a Rose gold version. Inside Fine Italian Jewelry House

FOPE | BY FELICITY CARTER

The home of fine jewelry, FOPE has built a global reputation for offering oh-so-glamorous pieces, complete with innovative, Italian flair, of course. Expect a coming together of diamonds and fine gemstones, and plenty of chains -- cue FOPE’s original flexible 18-carat gold mesh chains -- for a classic, yet contemporary appeal. And it’s an aesthetic that’s loved by the fashion glitterati and A-listers alike, from Rihanna and Katy Perry to Miley Cyrus and Kate Beckinsale all choosing FOPE for major red carpet events.

A

t the helm of the brand is Vicenza-born designer Claudia Piaserico who began her professional career as a lawyer, before heading into the realm of her true passion: fine jewelry. Over the course of her designing career, Claudia has received a whole host of awards and accolades, from an International Lifetime Achievement Award by the Women’s Jewelry Association to the Italian Fondazione Marisa Bellisario prize, supported by the President of the Italian Republic. If that doesn’t keep her busy enough, she’s also been recognized by the academic world for her achievements, lecturing at the University of Padua and the Artistic School of Vicenza. She has also held institutional positions within the goldsmithing world, including President of the Vicenza Confindustria Gold and Silversmiths section, National Vice President of the Italian Jewellers Association, and Vice President of Confindustria Vicenza. Claudia is also on the board of the Museo del Gioiello of Vicenza and, holds the position of the President of Confindustria Federorafi, the Italian association that represents more than 1500 Italian

goldsmithing companies. That’s no mean feat, especially whilst developing new designs and concepts to expand the FOPE markets. Claudia has taken time out of her busy schedule to talk about her passion for jewelry, her career to date, and the evolution of this beloved brand. You moved from the world of law to jewelry, how did that come about? My family owned a jewelry company in Italy, so I grew up around jewelry. But my father always wanted me to study law and become a judge. But after becoming a lawyer, I realized that my heart wasn’t in it. I started designing special jewelry pieces just for fun and only for myself to wear rather than sell. My designs included a big starfish, dolphin, and octopus brooch with lots of colored stones and enamel. Then fate intervened and an important international buyer happened to see my designs, fell in love with them, and asked to purchase them. They placed a significant order, and so my mother decided to give me an opportunity in the family business. That’s when my jewellery career began and I have never looked back. Did you always have a love for jewelry? I always loved jewellery from when I was a small girl and I loved to play dress-up with my Nonna’s necklaces and bracelets, pretending to be a princess. I especially love Art Deco and 1920’s designs, but I love all jewelry. Every design tells a unique story and it’s then up to us to lend our individual interpretation to that design when we wear jewelry in our own personal style. How did you develop your design talents? Traveling is important to keep my mind open and helps me to understand how the markets and consumers evolve, and what kind of new trends or needs we will face. I live in one of the three most important Italian gold districts (Vi-

30 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2023

cenza) and this helps me a lot in understanding new technologies and new working techniques, which is very important when designing contemporary jewels. Tell us about FOPE and its heritage. FOPE is one of the most important Italian jewelry brands. The company was founded in 1929 and it is famous around the world because of its continuous innovation. It is still a family business, even though it has been listed on the Milan stock exchange since 2006, which means that the brand has kept its family values and heritage. And it is very Italian! FOPE perfectly represents ‘Made in Italy’ because it masterfully blends heritage with innovation. What is your role at FOPE, and what does it entail? I am FOPE’s Creative Director. This means that I research how FOPE jewelry can develop by considering trends, looking at ways to increase quality, being always distinctive yet keeping our identity, but also becoming something new and different from the past. We look to design contemporary jewelry, that transcends gender, age, and culture. FOPE jewelry is suitable for both men and women, for younger generations and for the older ones, and with designs that can be translated into all kinds of fashion and cultural styles. This work is not done on my own - I also rely on my young team of designers, and I’m really very proud of them. How is the brand evolving? FOPE is constantly looking at the future and this sets us apart from many others. We heavily invest in R&D activities to assure innovation, to produce the highest quality 18ct gold jewelry, and to manufacture in a sustainable way. While FOPE’s ground-breaking Flex’it technology was pioneered in 2007 to create flexible gold mesh chains, made entirely from

JEWELRY

18ct gold, since then, FOPE has not stood still but has developed different types of flexible gold mesh designs on which our collections are based on. To do this, the bespoke technology to produce a new chain mesh has to be developed too, often using state-of-the-art robotic technology. A new collection based on the idea of a new style of flexible gold mesh can take two years to come to fruition - from the initial idea to creating the technology to make it and then designing a collection around it. Our designs are contemporary and while they constantly evolve with each new collection, they all fit perfectly with an everyday ‘quiet luxury’ experience. Our Flex’it system, which is unique in the world and patented to FOPE, makes our jewelry super comfortable to wear and very versatile. FOPE’s Flex’it bracelets can be worn all day, every day, and feel like a second skin on the wrist because they are so smooth and comfortable. Our Flex’it gold rings can stretch around different fingers, so you can choose which finger to place them on depending on your mood or style, or they can

be stacked together or with other rings too. And our Flex’it gold necklaces can be worn as comfortable chokers or joined together using our innovative clasp designs, to create long sautoirs. Finally, we have even extended the Flex’it technology to earrings, creating flexible gold hoops and drop earrings that can be worn in different ways. Is there anything you can share about new concepts and designs that are on the horizon? Well, one concept is very secret, and it will be amazing when we are ready to launch! I can’t tell you anything about this, but it will definitely be gorgeous! Trust me! It would be something very different but it will contain a deep meaning. Which are your standout or favorite FOPE pieces? Bubble rings! Especially because it was my very first design for FOPE and I’m really fond of them! They are something of a departure for

32 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2023

FOPE because they are a playful celebration of colored stones and diamonds, all set within an 18ct gold band based on FOPE’s classic Novecento mesh chain. What have been your career highlights to date? There have been so many! In 2011, I was awarded the national prize “Fondazione Marisa Belisario”, supported by the President of the Italian Republic for “New talents in Made In Italy design”. In 2013, I was awarded by the master Gianmaria Buccellati with the International Lifetime Achievement Award from the WJA (The Women’s Jewellery Association). In 2009 and 2010, during the Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles, I dressed well-known celebrities including Rihanna, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, and Kate Beckinsale. And finally, in 2021 I was honored to be appointed as President of the Italian Jewellery Federation, representing the interests of Italian jewelry manufacturing: a very important institutional role, which I take very seriously.

DARE TO RIDE BEST MOTORCYCLES ROUND-UP | BY DOUGIE LOYNES

From classic cruisers and rugged off-roaders to speedy superbikes built to tear up on track day, there’s a motorcycle for every rider in this round-up of 2023’s best new motorcycles in each category.

BEST TOURER: GL1800 GOLD WING TOUR In a year when manufacturers chose to unveil minor updates to their existing touring models rather than release any all-new bikes, Honda announced that the 2023 Gold Wing Tour would be available in two new colour schemes. And that it now comes with a new Tyre Pressure Monitoring System as standard. That’s all. Same 1,833cc flat-six engine, same throne-like pillion, same luxurious ride. But what more does the understated champion of long-distance touring need? Sexier bikes there may be, but when it comes to comfort nothing compares.

BEST ADVENTURE BIKE: DUCATI MULTISTRADA V4 RALLY Ducati’s latest model in the Multistrada range, the 2023 V4 Rally, rolled off the production line and straight into contention for the title of class leader in the adventure biking category. With increased ground clearance, a larger fuel tank and upgraded specs, the V4 Rally’s versatility makes it feel just as at home on the highway as it is off-road, combining comfort and rideability with top-notch tech that adds a touch of luxury. Performance and power have always been at the heart of Ducati, a brand famous for its superbike heritage, so it comes as little surprise that the V4 Rally outperforms its rivals with 170bhp and a V4 engine whose growl belies its racing roots. But with BMW’s R1300 GS arriving in the US in early 2024, it’ll be interesting to see how the Multistrada V4 Rally stands up to an all-new version of the world’s best-selling adventure bike. BEST CRUISER: HARLEYDAVIDSON BREAKOUT 117 It had to be a Harley. The world’s most iconic motorcycle brand celebrated their 120th anniversary this year by releasing seven limited-edition bikes, but it’s the raked-out Breaker 117 that gets the nod as this year’s quintessential American cruiser. More functional than their Fat Bob, and less cumbersome than the Road Glide or Low Rider, the original Breakout was Harley-Davidson’s stretched-out, no-compromise drag bike, but it took some heat for sacrificing rider comfort for show-stopping visuals. Thankfully, subtle changes to the bar height and a Softail rear end have turned the 2023 version into a bike that’s good for more than just turning heads. Loud, muscular, and dripping with Harley heritage, the 2023 Breakout 117 has the substance to back up the style courtesy of its enormous eight-valve 1923cc engine.

BEST ROADSTER: TRIUMPH STREET TRIPLE 765 RS When Triumph let loose the Street Triple 765 RS, they called it “the most addictive, explosive and intuitive performance street motorcycle you can buy”. A bold claim from the British manufacturer, but spend five minutes in the RS’s saddle and you’ll find it difficult to disagree. Make no mistake, this is a stripped-down, straight bar sports bike with a class-leading 128 bhp and 57lb-ft of torque thanks to performance upgrades from the same team that developed Triumph’s Moto2 race engine. It makes the Street Triple RS a thrill to ride on track days, where it launches out of corners like a catapult and handles with razor-sharp responsiveness. Not content with simply setting a new performance benchmark for naked sports bikes, the RS also doubles up as a surprisingly friendly road bike that doesn’t shy away from its daily duties.

BEST SUPERBIKE: DUCATI PANIGALE V4R Ducati’s Panigale V4 R is a racing bike in the thinnest of disguises. Barely road-legal, it’s the closest that many of us will come to living out our Moto GP or World Superbike Championship dreams. That said, it’s a challenge for mere mortals to take this bike anywhere close to its upper limits, even on a track day. The numbers kicked out by the V4 R’s 998cc Desmosedici Stradale R engine are astronomical, with a top range of 16,500rpm in sixth gear delivering a maximum of 231bhp (with racing exhaust attached: otherwise, expect 218bhp). All this power makes the V4 R a formidable track monster that takes some serious skills to tame, but endless excitement awaits for those who dare to dance with Ducati’s devil.

BUGATTI’S EYEWEAR COLLECTION As Striking as their Cars | BY SOMNATH CHATTERJEE

B

ugatti is known for its extravagant cars and these are some of the most expensive along with being the most sought after by car collector. Hence, if owning a Bugatti is a privilege for only a few, you can still own a slice of this brand via its new eyewear collection. Bugatti Brand Lifestyle’s all-new eyewear collaboration includes 37 statement pieces and the nine-style set includes ones made different materials – including palladium, 925 sterling silver, carbon fibre and Macassar ebony. It is also taking inspiration from Bugatti cars within the minute details and has been designed with Larry D. Sands. “When I got the call from Bugatti, I was a little surprised, but to be approached by the world’s most powerful and luxurious auto manufacturer, to create their eyewear, was an honour,” he said. “Everything I do is unexpected, and Bugatti Eyewear is some of my most unexpected work yet. Expectation is the enemy of creativity.” Collection One took two years to complete while each piece has been crafted in Japan, from solid 925 sterling silver trim with genuine 18k gold and palladium- the most expensive materials in the world. Also, it uses Positive Vapor Deposition (PVD) – a process in which a solid material is vaporized

in a vacuum and deposited onto the surface of the product. The PVD acts as a Diamond Like Coating, a surface that is highly resistant to wear and is also used throughout the development and production of Bugatti automobiles. The use of carbon fibre and Macassar ebony is another aspect of design elements from cars being used along with the use of the famed red enamel Macaron. An intricate custom wire core, developed in sheets to mirror the grill pattern that adorns each Bugatti hyper sports car’s horseshoe radiator, is perhaps the biggest design factor. Wiebke Ståhl, Managing Director of Bugatti International, added: “The decision to partner with such an auspicious, revered, and experienced artist as Larry Sands is testament to our shared design ideals and vision for outstanding quality to achieve truly iconic products. Creating this new luxury eyewear is also key to our portfolio as it closes a strategic gap in Bugatti’s diversified brand lifestyle collection; I could not be more excited to finally launch our new Bugatti Eyewear!” Collection One was showcased at the MIDO Optical Trade Show on February 4 2023 in Milan, Italy, and will be available in highly exclusive boutiques. Retail prices from $1,295 to $15,000. 

GLEN IVY HOT SPRINGS An unforgettable Holistic Hot Springs Retreat | BY DAWN WILSON

After visiting Glen Ivy Hot Springs in the Temescal Valley of Corona, California, I now understand what it means to ‘live in the lap of luxury.’ This is where natural mineral spring water flows from the earth into the resort pools and mineral baths, offering guests complete relaxation and rejuvenation. Open year-round, the hot springs attract more than 200,000 visitors annually. We are delighted to be among that number in 2023. From the moment we walked into the facility, we were immersed in peace and tranquility. While we weren’t sure how we would spend an entire day at a hot springs resort, we quickly realized how easy it is to do at Glen Ivy. By the end of the day, we still wanted more time to enjoy all they had to offer. We were convinced that we would have to return very soon and regularly. If you need a respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life, I can’t think of a better place to find it than at Glen Ivy Hot Springs. With so much to offer, you may be unsure where to start upon entering. Might I suggest beginning as we did, with a holistic massage provided by a certified therapist with years of industry experience. It’s just what the doctor ordered! In addition to various massages, they also offer facials and nail treatments, as well as treatments specifically for men. Our relaxing massage set the pace for the rest of our day. Next, we made our way to Club

Mud, where geothermal mineral water mixed with local red clay offers detoxifying benefits. As the mud dried and created a flaky coating on our bodies, we felt the transformation. Once washed off, our skin was as soft as butter. The mud is locally sourced and mixed with natural mineral water daily. Now, it was time for a meal. There are several dining options available, all offering organic and locally grown ingredients, in line with their fresh and clean California eating initiative. Guests have a variety of dining choices, whether they are vegetarian, vegan, or prefer gluten-free dishes. We savored a variety of healthy options and comfort foods at their main restaurant, Ivy Kitchen. Our dining experience was enhanced by reserving a beautiful cabana atop the restaurant, which offered sweeping views of the immaculate grounds and surrounding mountainous terrain. Cabanas also come with food and beverage service, enabling you to sit back, relax, and fully enjoy the experience. Several bars and restaurants are scattered throughout the neatly manicured property to suit your needs and preferences. Now it was time for us to explore The Water Experience, the heart and soul of Glen Ivy Hot Springs. The property boasts several Mineral Baths and Pools, each with a host of medicinal benefits. We began by soaking in the Glen Ivy Mineral Water Composition geothermal pool, which soothes joint pain, stimulates immunity, and

softens the skin. The Saline Pool aids the nervous system and is filled with Epsom salts, rich in magnesium and sulfates, which ease tight muscles, cramps, and reduce inflammation. The Hydrotherapy Pool enhances the immune system and circulation. As temperatures range from hottest (102.5 degrees) to coldest (55 degrees), blood vessels expand and constrict, boosting blood flow and detoxifying the body. It is recommended to repeat the hot and cold-water immersion process at least three

times. The Lap pool keeps you fit, while the Vista Pool, also heated, allows guests to enjoy stunning views of the Santa Ana mountains during the day and nighttime sunsets. The North and South Pools are the liveliest, basking in direct sunlight, and perfect for relaxing poolside. Lastly, the Roman Baths evoke the authentic Roman Bath Houses with classical arches, stone colonnades, and mosaics, providing a luxurious bathing experience. In our humble opinion, we

saved the best for last: The Grotto. Guests enter a cave and are coated from top to bottom with a moisturizing body masque. After being painted, they are led to an area where they can relax, allowing the masque to be fully absorbed into the skin. After the masque is rinsed off, it leaves you with silky smooth skin. I’m delighted to announce that throughout October, Evenings at Glen Ivy will be held on weekends, from Friday through Sunday. This special event includes exclusive evening dining, live entertainment, and more, which can be added to guests’ existing wellness plans. The Glen Ivy Hot Springs experience is something I believe everyone should treat themselves to at least once in their lifetime. Chances are, you’ll be like us, planning your next visit before you even leave.”

AT HOME WITH

LAUREN LERNER | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS PHOTOS BY LIFECREATED

Lauren Lerner allows us a look inside her Scottsdale home, which she shares with her son, Zach and two adorable dogs, Zoe and Bernie.

Lauren, please tell us a bit about yourself. I am the principal designer and founder of Living with Lolo, an interior design firm based in Scottsdale, AZ, since 2017. Fueled by my love for clean lines, mixed metals, colors, and timeless pieces, I thrive on bringing a client’s home to life from the very beginning. Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path? I believe I was born to be an entrepreneur. Both my dad and my grandpa were entrepreneurs. I fondly remember the thrill of getting to “work” alongside them in the family business as a child, and always knew that my path would somehow lead to running a business of my own.

42 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2023

Please tell us more about your home. My home is located in Scottsdale, AZ, and is 6,000 sq/ft. It serves as my personal residence, and we have a separate structure on site that serves as our team’s office. I knew I wanted a space that was both chic and livable. It was also important that this modern allowed me to take full advantage of an indoor/ outdoor living concept which is enjoyable many months of the year in Arizona. I can confidently say that my home is a wonderful reflection of all the things that I feel design should accomplish - a space that you feel connected to, comfortable in, and proud of. You are an interior designer. Did you opt to do your home’s own interior design?

Because I am constantly seeing new products and innovations, it was hard to make a decision and stick to it for my own home! Especially because I designed my house during COVID-19 and the delays were long, it meant that I had a lot of time to rethink my decisions. Ultimately, I landed on pieces and finishes that I loved, and the end result is a sophisticated and modern space that has timeless appeal. How would you best describe your design style? I have a true passion for crafting personalized spaces that strike the perfect balance between familiarity and inspiration, enabling our clients to live their most extraordinary lives. My design approach seamlessly blends modern, contemporary, and eclectic styles, resulting in captivating and timeless environments. Where / what / who inspires your design style? My design aesthetic draws inspiration from individual pieces I love from a broad range of artisans and is strongly fueled by the beauty of nature discovered both locally and through travel. I don’t like to box my preferences into one exact style, because I feel an eclectic gathering of inspiration creates a more personalized design without limitations. How do you keep things fresh and new in terms of decorating? I make it a point to attend the market at least once a year to stay updated with the latest trends. Additionally, I find endless inspiration on Instagram, where I immerse myself in captivating visuals and innovative ideas. Is there a specific color you are drawn to in interior design? I incorporate a variety of neutral textures in our designs, complemented by vibrant pops of color. Many of our clients specifically request shades of blue and green, which I gladly include. However, if I had to pick a personal favorite, purple would definitely take the top spot. Do you believe in repurposing? I advocate for repurposing only when you truly adore an item. I am not fond of holding onto things simply for the sake of having them. If something resides in your home, it ought to evoke a sense of significance and love for you. Do you have any special heirloom pieces? No, I do not. Which part of your home is your favorite? I really enjoy the seamless blend of indoor and outdoor living in my home, allowing me to relish the best of both worlds effortlessly.

my home with my dogs and my kiddo in mind, ensuring easy clean-up and durability. There are no restrictions or limitations for any of them on furniture etc.

In which part of your home do you spend the most time? This is a tough one because I am a happy homebody who loves so many areas in my home! I spend the majority of my time in the kitchen crafting yummy recipes, in the living room hanging out with family and friends, and in the backyard lounging by the pool or enjoying a cocktail while admiring a stunning AZ sunset.

Did your son navigate his own design style, interpreted by you? Zach did have design input in his room. He is a big fan of abstract art and selected the piece over his desk. I love that he felt a personal connection to it, and it served as a great inspiration for the remaining aesthetic of the room. He also is drawn to brighter colors, so he chose a deep teal as the primary hue in the space.

You share your home with your son and two adorable dogs, Zoe & Bernie. As an expert in your field, were/are you open to design suggestions from them, and did you incorporate any special places for your marketing managers? Let’s be honest, my dogs run the house! I have designed everything in

Do you have any designers that inspire you? I enjoy exploring social media platforms to uncover emerging designers and witness their innovative ideas firsthand.

Narrating through Design

TIM PFEIFFER & STEVE HOEDEMAKER | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS

As the leading partners in their firm Hoedemaker Pfeiffer, Tim Pfeiffer and Steve Hoedemaker merge their collective talents to create amazing interiors and exteriors. They spoke with Upscale Living magazine about what goes into fashioning beautiful spaces, and in essence, narrating through design.

Tim & Steve, tell us a bit about yourselves. Tim Pfeiffer: I am a Northwest native but spent nearly thirty years away. Both San Francisco and New York were home during those career building years. I had the pleasure and great opportunities to help develop and design many world class establishments and branded environments in the retail and hospitality arenas, with projects on nearly every continent. I was fortunate to have work, though commercial at first the focus was all residentially driven. Grand hotel stays, European restaurants and boutiques and of course the Paris flea markets were the classrooms of my early career. The craftsmanship of interiors, the art and furnishings studied on those travels have inspired so many aspects of my work. Steve Hoedemaker: I grew up in the Northwest, the son of an architect and a farmer. I continue to embrace that dichotomy, spending the weeks in the city at a house designed by Ralph Anderson and Jim Olson in the 1960s, and weekends at a family farm in the San Juan Islands. I also serve as the Board Chair of the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington. Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path? Tim: My grandmothers. At the age of nine, after rearranging the dining room

48 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2023

one evening, my maternal grandmother looked at me and said “Dear, I think you will be an architect. Or more, an interior architect.” I didn’t know then, but I got it quickly. My other Gram, who saw a kindred spirit, dragged me round the house pointing out the differences in persian rugs, china and silverware, then through museums and antique stores teaching me the art of treasure hunting. The road trips through colonial America to see important architecture of the east coast caught my hunger for buildings and their place in society. Steve: I lived through 7 remodels by the time I left for college, at which point I saw houses as malleable and available for improvements that make a difference in people’s lives. At 19 I started working construction during the summer and had a chance to see a huge variety of work, starting with sanding plywood on Whidbey Island for a Christopher Alexander house. In college I had the good fortune of studying with Thomas Bosworth, FAIA and later working for him as I finished my thesis. I had intended for that to be a short-term prospect but found myself loving the confidence placed in me and ultimately the opportunity to take over that practice.

How did you end up in business together? Tim: Over cocktails … When did you start your firm, Hoedemaker Pfeiffer? Steve: Hoedemaker Pfeiffer was formed in 2017 out of Bosworth Hoedemaker, the practice formed out of The Bosworth Studio. What does it entail to be partners in a multidisciplinary architecture and interior studio creating modern yet timeless experiences? Tim: It starts with a bit of a marriage. We have a shared respect for both our professional and life experiences. Appreciation of individuals strengths and focus and a shared eye and understanding of the balances required to stay the joyful course. We have created a work and team culture and social network grateful for shared ambitions and delight in our achievements. Understanding the true essence of family allows us to tap both the experiences and dreams of our clients and deliver spaces for memories to be made. Steve: We like to think of the practice as a sandbox that give us the space to play in a number of different ways. Architecture and interiors each have their own projects where we have the pleasure of partnering with other firms. And we have the projects we share and have the pleasure of creating a fully conceived and complete vision. All of our work is centered on finding and telling a family’s story through building, furnishings, and art. How do you go about creating a space for your clients, essentially revealing the human spirit and connecting them to the world they live in? Steve: We start by collecting a lot of information, from site and zoning information to details about how our clients want to live their lives. We want to know what story they want to tell themselves and their friends every time they walk in the door. We want to know how many guests they will have for dinners, who sleeps on which side of the bed, and whether they are morning people or evening people. The process is intimate so the work can be good.

Photo by Kevin Scott Tim, how do you fashion unique environments for your clients? Tim: I am always curious, a natural treasure hunter and collector. In getting to know the personal aspirations of a client, I build a platform and weave together pieces of their individual story. Shapes, textures and colors are selected to meet the focus of individual rooms and from there a natural flow and direction emerges. From the collective, a comfort and unique familiarity can be felt that completes the script for the client and the project. Steve, how do navigate your clients’ relationship between indoors & outdoors? Steve: I often think of our houses as tools designed to connect people to the outdoors. The season dictates so much of what is possible in terms of that engagement, but if a house can make it easy to step into nature in the summer, easy to tuck into a cozy porch in spring and fall, and easy to visually connect to the outdoors all year, that is a great way to center the outdoors in everyone’s lives.

Would you regard yourselves as storytellers by design? Tim: Without a doubt! From the introduction Do you have a signature style? to a client and the project site, we begin to build a narrative that informs who and what the Tim: If any, it would be an eclectic layering of events. A suggestion of gathering with a charmed project will become. 50 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2023

and collected life. Warm and comfortable, structured and balanced. Textures and shapes are evident that capture the eye and draw rhythm between pieces and space. Art holds the final layer and cements a sense of time and place. What and who inspires you? Tim: Simplicity and exuberance. From Jean Cocteau to I.M. Pei, Marcel Proust to Rudolf Shindler, Roland terry to Axel Vervoort; stories born and dreams executed to perfection. A social understanding of history and the connected creative world that colors the present work we do. What is your favorite part of your job? Tim: The discovery of a new solution to an age old challenge. Steve: Finding joy in the act of creation, joy in the work we do with our clients, and joy in appreciating the finished project. We are engaged in creating homes with people who recognize that where they live has the power to change their life and that is a beautiful thing. You have done some exquisite projects. Has there been a favorite and why? Tim: We have a wonderful Island project situated remarkably on a spit that began as a renovation

Moments of Axel Vervoort meet English country with a sense of being afloat on the sound…the water is so near. A plastered world with timber and monolithic stone feels solidly anchored and at peace with the edge of forest wrapping the project. It’s a dreamy place and a wonderful client that we helped bring their dreams to life. What do you do for fun? Tim: I am a collector and have focused a great deal of free time on art, but with personal home projects I always seem to have a building in a state of design transformation. If not for interiors

and architecture, I would have been a landscape man. So yes, a major gardener, you can otherwise find me working on landscape projects or off to the nursery. And, of course, travel tends to keep my curiosities fed and up to speed on the arts and design of experiences outside the Northwest. Paddle boarding and hitting the trails brings me squarely back to the sound. Steve: For fun I like to get out of the city to the farm or on a sailboat I share with friends. Being on a boat is a wonderful way to separate from all the things that ground my life and work.

let me stretch my commercial wings again and create real moments of gathering in Seattle. Then off to the Coachella Valley where we have two ground up desert family compounds. Warm weather destinations are always wonderful to focus on with the outdoor living aspects of vacation homes and the complexity of amenities available to imagine. https://hoedemakerpfeiffer.com/

In the North Malé Atoll of the Maldives is an island so pristine, you will discover what paradise truly means.

I

have only ever seen the Maldives on photographs and never thought to visit what looks like a picture-perfect postcard place. When the call from the inimitable Charlotte Rous from Charlotte Rous Communications came through, I said yes without even hesitating. The destination? Gili Lankanfushi in the northern part of the Maldives, where the color of the water changes so spectacularly, it seems almost unreal. Arriving in paradise following two flights with Qatar Airways – the first from Cape Town International Airport to Hamad International Airport in Doha, and the second from Doha to Malé International Airport in the Maldives, I am whisked away by the Gili speedboat for my 20-minute transfer from jetty to silky white sand. With Gili’s ‘no news no shoes’ policy, guests relinquish their footwear on the boat to literally immerse themselves in barefoot luxury when setting foot sans shoes in this immaculate environment. The shoes are safely kept in canvas bags and reappear on the boat transfer back to the airport on your last day. For those who want to make use of the gym at Gili, a reminder to bring suitable trainers is included in Gili’s list of what to pack. Being met at the Gili jetty adds a different perspective for receiving a warm welcome – the team is there with big smiles, and most importantly, I am introduced to my Ms. Friday, the lovely Shaany, who will be looking after me during my 4-night stay. Conceptualized from the Robinson Crusoe book and his loyal assistant, the advantage of a Mr./Ms. Friday is clear – they make

a guest stay seamless from the moment they arrive at Gili. No task seems too insurmountable, and when things like missing luggage rear it’s ugly head, they handle it with grace and calm, albeit in an inobtrusive manner. I’m staying in Villa 9, and Shaany transports me there in a golf cart to show me around my impressive accommodation. Getting around the island from my Villa to the main area, I am offered a bamboo bicycle. Shaany spots

the trepidation on my face as I disclose that I haven’t ridden a bicycle in decades. “No worries,” she says reassuringly, “we’ll bring you a tricycle!” Said tricycle is outside my front door when I leave my Villa for lunch, and what a wonderful way to get from point A to point B and back. Peddling along the wooden jetty to the Pool Bar for lunch with the breeze enveloping me, I’m elated to be on a mode of transport that requires less balance than being

on a bicycle. My one-bedroom Villa Suite is absolutely stunning, designed by Singapore-based firm Maverick. Their inspiration was unpretentious living spaces, allowing guests to feel immediately relaxed and at home. The interior design needed to be relevant in harmony with the existing structure, and blend into its natural surroundings. It’s evident that the use of eco-friendly materials creates a neutral palette,

and the result is striking in the setting of a no-frills overwater Villa. All luxury aspects have been carefully considered, from a choice of duvet inners to which fragrance you might appreciate for the little pillows placed between your pillow and pillowcase. Bath products are 100% natural and come in refillable containers, another way in which Gili is sustainable and plastic-free. Dining at Gili, guests are in for a treat – from Kashiveli to By The Sea, and the Overwater Bar to the Underground Wine Cellar. The destination dining at Palm Beach is like stepping into a dream, with twinkling lights and the most incredible cuisine. A highlight for me is meeting executive chef Harinath Govindaraj at the Gili Organic Garden, where he proceeds to cook for us from his vegan and plant-based menu. The tasty fare he concocts right in front of us is so delicious, I’m very tempted to convert to this healthy way of eating. His Pan-seared Scallop dish is out-of-this-world, as is the BBQ Eggplant Striploin steak. Hari is really passionate about what he does, telling us that being able to pick his own herbs in the garden that he was instrumental in growing adds to the fresh taste of what he prepares. “As a chef, coming to pick your own herbs makes such a big difference,” he tells us while chopping Shitake mushrooms. “The garden is the place where I recharge, even if I’m angry, upset, or happy, because the plants will talk to me. People think I’m crazy, but the plants will talk to everyone. Once we start listening to ourselves, we can listen to the garden. Nature has a solution to everything, but because we are all so busy, we’re not listening. My family doesn’t know that I’m a chef at Gili Lankanfushi – they think I’m cooking in the markets of the Maldives. I cannot imagine what I would do if I wasn’t a chef. People say you find your destiny, but I can say my destiny found me.” Making my way to the Meera Spa, spa therapist Sue awaits my arrival, and she brings me a delightful mix of rose and lime tea. Starting my session with a foot massage using tea tree oil, I feel relaxed and look forward to my Meera signature massage. A combination of global massage styles, Sue cautions me that she will be placing heated cushions on my back that infiltrates through my spine alignment to my lower back. She applies just the right amount of pressure during my restorative massage with Meera’s signature oils, sending me off to dreamland.

There are plenty of activities at Gili Lankanfushi, from snorkeling to sunset dolphin cruises, and surfing lessons for novice or advanced surfers, presented by Tropicsurf instructors. By far the most interesting aspect of a stay at Gili Lankanfushi is getting to know about their sustainability initiatives, which is at the core of everything they do on the island. “We are part of EarthCheck,” marine biologist and sustainability manager Jocelyn Panjikaran tells me. “It’s our scientific benchmark based out of Australis, and they monitor our environmental impact, things like our fuel usage, our water usage, how we dispose of our waste, and how efficient we are with our resources. We have many different initiatives on the property.” Jocelyn continues: “Engineering plays a big part in sustainability; operationally we need to be as efficient as possible because we get our power from diesel, which is a huge carbon

footprint and for a property this size, we use a fair amount of diesel. To offset the amount of power / diesel we use, we have solar panels at the back of house, and all our accommodation has solar – we have around 690 panels in different areas on the property, but not on the villas because the design doesn’t allow for it. We try to maximize the use of solar for things like our laundries and the water treatment at a time when the sun is shining brightest in the afternoon.” In spite of being on an island surrounded by the Indian Ocean, water in the Maldives is regarded as a precious commodity. At Gili, the water is desalinated, and they have boreholes from which water is extracted. Water is monitored on an hourly basis, and if there is a spike anywhere, the Gili engineering team will investigate whether there might be a leakage. One thing is certain, even in such an unspoilt location, people work hard to go the extra mile as I experience during my stay here. It’s hard to leave paradise, but I promise to be back one day. Another part of the Gili philosophy – arrive as a guest, leave as friends, and return as family. Nightly rates at Gili Lankanfushi Maldives start from $1,440 based on two adults sharing a Villa Suite with breakfast included. SCOTLAND Indulge in its Hospitality on a Luxury Tour

My indulgent five-day luxury tour of Scotland began with a warm greeting at Edinburgh Airport from my knowledgeable chauffeur, Neil Milne, arranged by Luxury Scotland Tours. Over the next few days, Neil provided outstanding hospitality and insights into Scottish culture as he drove me through a thoughtfully crafted itinerary showcasing this captivating country’s abundant charms. | BY SHAUN MELADY

M

y journey began in Glasgow, where I soaked in the city’s blend of history and culture. A contemporary take on Scottish gastropub cuisine at Ox and Finch was followed by a private walking tour of Glasgow’s gothic architecture and world-class museums. That evening I continued my cultural immersion at Crossbasket Castle, where I stayed the night. Its meticulously restored 16th century bridal tower and opulent interiors provided a taste of Scottish nobility. Chef Michel Roux Jr.’s Michelin-starred dinner exhibited fine Scottish cuisine at its best. Venturing further into Scotland’s scenic wilderness, an exhilarating 4x4 off-road tour in a Land Rover Defender with 4x4 Adventures Scotland Ltd. took me up rugged trails for panoramic vistas over Loch Lomond. Afterward, I stepped into The Loch Lomond Arms

Hotel for a relaxing lunch filled with fresh local flavors and inspirational views. A highlight was an intimate falconry experience at the Isle of Eriska Castle, where I also spent a night. Donning a glove, a majestic hawk landed on my arm, demonstrating aerial skills. The team at Elite Falconry introduced me to owls and other birds-of-prey as well. Before arriving at Inverlochy Castle and Greywalls Hotel over the next few days, I toured the renowned Oban Distillery, learning first-hand how it crafts its award-winning single malt scotch. From there, I indulged in amenities from pink champagne tea at Inverlochy Castle to visiting the award-winning master chocolate maker at Highland Chocolatier, while taking in the dramatic beauty of Glencoe and soaring above the mountains in a thrilling gondola ride.

The castles and stately manors combined exquisite hospitality with oldworld Scottish charm. The cuisine expertly blended tradition and innovation. While each day brought new discoveries, I looked forward to unwinding in luxury each evening. As Neil drove me back to Edinburgh, I was already longing to return to Scotland’s enchanting landscapes and lavish hospitality. This unforgettable luxury tour transported me into a world of wonder. I departed with lifelong memories and a piece of Scotland in my heart. To learn more about Luxury Scotland Tours or to book your bespoke itinerary, visit their website at LuxuryScotlandTours.com.

HOTEL

GOLDEN WELL HOTEL | BY TRACY BEARD

The Golden Well Hotel rests just below the wall of Prague Castle in the Malá Strana, also known as Lesser Town, a hillside area with stunning views across the Vltava River and into the old town. This 5-star boutique hotel boasts 17 luxury rooms and 2 suites, world-class amenities, art and original paintings of Prague, an incredible restaurant, and one of the best locations in the city. Many of Prague’s most impressive sights, including the Royal Gardens, St. Nicholas Church, Old Town Square, Prague Castle, numerous art museums, and eclectic architecture from multiple centuries, are within walking distance of the hotel. HISTORY OF THE HOTEL During the 16th century, the property where the Golden Well Hotel now exists was a private residence and part of a collection of private houses; the property was converted into a hotel approximately 20 years ago. Prague thrived from 1583 to 1612 under Emperor Rudolf II. Each room at the hotel has its own individual personality and is named after someone connected to the court of Rudolf II to preserve the hotel’s historical and cultural legacy. Rooms feature well-appointed furnishings of Richelieu reproduction antiques that speak to the history and luxury of the hotel. The pillow service features four or six down and hypo-allergenic pillows and a nightly bed turned-down service to inspire a good night’s sleep in your bed with a luxury duvet or French bedding setup. Each room offers an iPad, writing desk, flat-screen LED TV, Nespresso or Illy coffee machine, and a selection of tea. VISIT TO PRAGUE Recently my husband, Steve, and I visited Prague, and we stayed at The Golden Well Hotel in Room 21, the Roelant Savery room. Roelant was an artist who traveled to Prague from the Spanish-occupied Southern Netherlands around 1604 to become the emperor’s court painter. BREAKFAST AT THE GOLDEN WELL The morning meal can be enjoyed in the

breakfast room, boasting a stunning view of the city, or in the privacy of your room. Breakfast includes a beautiful buffet of fruits, charcuterie, cheeses, juices, coffee, tea, and more. The menu also offers an assortment of breakfast meats and hot dishes. FINE DINING AT GOLDEN WELL HOTEL The Terasa U Zlate studne restaurant, located on the top floor of the hotel, is one of the top dining destinations in the city. The restaurant features two outside and one inside terrace with breathtaking views of “the city of one hundred spires.” Italian architects Lorenzo Carmelini and Katrin Herden showcase their merged style of modern design and elements of the Renaissance era in the restaurant’s new interior. Executive Chef Lukáš Hlaváček started at the restaurant last year and was previously selected by Forbes Magazine as one of the 30 under 30 talented professional chefs. THE BAR The bar offers a carefree atmosphere with a terrace located high above the city where patrons can enjoy a wide selection of the finest wines, Champagnes, and cocktails while enjoying spectacular views of Prague’s red roofs. EXPLORE THE CITY The city of Prague was once considered very provincial. The architecture speaks to the city

66 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2023

planners’ openness to include styles from each era. Steve and I spent a few hours with Kristian Mejstrik, who gave us a spectacular tour of the city, compliments of Prague City Tourism. We also used our vouchers to ride the buses and the Prague Metro service for our remaining 3-day stay. Our walk and Metro ride throughout the city with Kristian was informative and fun. I especially liked the bizarre artwork created by David Černy. David has made numerous pieces of unusual art found peppered throughout Prague. The Head of Franz Kafka, a Czech writer, was my favorite and is a sculpture in motion. The turning head statue, made of 42 pieces stacked on each other in layers, twists and turns until Franz Kafka’s face is formed. The statue is outside the Quadrio business district. Another unique piece, installed hanging from the ceiling in the Art Nouveau Lucerna Mall, represents King Wenceslas riding on the belly of an upside-down horse. BOOK A TRIP Prague, the centerpiece of the Czech Republic, is a fabulous city. Its mix of Medieval architecture, cobblestone streets, and modern art is exciting and worth a visit. A stay at the Golden Well Hotel will set the mood and help you immerse yourself in the history and culture of the city while providing all the opulent amenities desired.

Beautifully Refurbished

DELAIRE GRAFF ESTATE | BY JARONE ASHKENAZI

Purchased by British diamanaire Laurence Graff OBE in 2023, the Delaire Graff Estate opened in 2009. It recently underwent an extensive refurbishment of its Garden, Luxury and Presidential lodges, and shared guest spaces. Graff entrusted renowned interior designer David Collins Studio —who has worked with the

Estate since the beginning—to bring his vision to life and beautifully combine old-world elegance with contemporary, creative opulence. Each lodge has a pared-back color palette with beautiful South African accents and art that frames the views from each terrace. Interior details focus on intricate hand craftsmanship; rich greens, oranges, and yellows are seen throughout, perfectly mirroring the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. Spacious living areas and lightfilled interiors flow seamlessly outdoors, where guests can dip into a private heated plunge pool. The Estate’s Garden, Luxury and Superior lodges all feature one bedroom. In contrast, the two Presidential lodges have two bedrooms on either side of a spacious living area and a full-size swimming pool. One of the most exclusive private residences in Southern Africa, the four-bedroom Owner’s Villa is a masterclass in luxury living, offering complete peace and privacy. Following a five-month refurbishment, the Estate welcomed guests old and new on October 16 to see the upgrades firsthand. To complement the exceptional collection of modern and contemporary

68 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2023

African art seen throughout the Estate, Graff selected bespoke pieces crafted by South African artists to bolster this powerful design aesthetic. Two such artists, Jesse Ede and Chuma Maweni, have their remarkable lighting and furniture pieces showcased. An intricate chandelier by Maweni forms part of his Isibane (meaning ‘light’ in isiXhosa) collection, as well as an Imbizo-inspired (meaning ‘gathering’ in isiXhosa) table which can be seen in a new cocktail bar. Solar Portal by Ede also features—a large-scale, wall-based bronze sculpture with a mirror-polished elliptical area in the center that portrays the sun opening up and is inspired by the sun god Ra. Along with the refurbishments noted above, HŌSEKI replaced long-time local favorite Indochine Restaurant and will provide cuisine elevating the spirit of Japanese culture and traditions. Prices for the lodges at Delaire Graff Estate start from R22,000 per night in the low season and R28,800 in the high season. More information can be found at delaire.co.za. 

World’s Largest Super Luxury Charter Catamaran

THIS IS IT | BY KEVIN PILLEY

T

HIS IS IT is the world’s largest ultra-luxury motor catamaran, based in Greece. It launched this year at the Monaco Yacht Show and will be available for charter beginning April 2024. The design inspiration for THIS IS IT comes from the automotive world, based on aerodynamic rules, fluid and organic lines, and flexible and dynamic shapes. “Naturally, what applies to external lines also applies to interior styling,” says luxury yacht builder Gian Marco Campanino of The Italian Sea Group. Marco continues, “Smooth, cocooning, and curvilin-

ear are perfect words to describe the interior of the yacht, plus a touch of pure luxury due to the use of sophisticated and precious materials.” The THIS IS IT interior styling is highly precise with contrasting materials, including smooth finishes such as high-quality leather, Alcantara suede fabrics, and metallic surfaces. Metals like bronze, platinum, and gold contrast the soft, neutral palette. Campanino adds, “The materials used result from careful research and great craftsmanship, necessary for their creation and application on complex surfaces and detailing.”

The spectacular 43.5-meter (142.71-ft) futuristic catamaran’s striking exterior design is by Tecnomar, while her ultra-luxurious interiors are by Mattia Piro and Campanino. Built with an aluminum hull, THIS IS IT has a maximum speed of 19 knots, a cruising speed of 17 knots, and a range of 3,500 nautical miles at 10 knots. THIS IS IT is the vision of its owner, Cypriot Tasos Papanastasiou, who established XM, one of the world’s largest financial forex platforms, boasting more than 2.5 billion transactions to date. “ THIS IS IT was born not as a concept study but as a yacht to be built;

therefore, the yacht’s design had to be feasible even if it is completely new in terms of content and style. She is radical and innovative,” says Papanastasiou. The clever catamaran layout design maximizes time onboard with light-filled interiors courtesy of expansive windows and strategically placed skylights. Large floor-to-ceiling doors fully open to blur the lines between the yacht’s interior and the exterior lounge area, including

a swimming pool and sunbathing area. The yacht’s main lounge includes a large bar and game area, with ample seating for convivial get-togethers, and the dining area seats 12 guests. A total of six ultra-luxurious cabins accommodate 12 guests, including a voluminous owner’s suite with a private balcony and a VIP cabin, each featuring a dedicated en-suite bathroom, clever storage solutions, and the yacht’s

refined Champagne-infused color palette. Her crew quarters accommodate 12, ensuring guests onboard enjoy excellent service. Relaxation happens on the upper deck of THIS IS IT in the sumptuous spa, which features a dedicated treatment area, sauna, and sensory shower. Adjacent to the spa is the yacht’s playroom/convertible cabin, a flexible space used to keep little ones entertained or as an additional guest room. 

ARIA HOTEL PRAGUE | BY TRACY BEARD

When I think of the Aria Hotel Prague, the words that come to mind are luxury, art, and beauty. Photos and statues are on display throughout the public spaces and rooms. Coda Restaurant serves delicious, Instagram-worthy dishes, and the UNESCO World Heritage Baroque Vrtba garden just outside the hotel is stunning.

T

he 5-star hotel, located near the historical city center and designed by the Italian architecture firm SPATIUM, opened in 2003. The hotel is within walking distance of numerous historic buildings, the Charles Bridge, and plenty of tasty restaurants. The original buildings, transformed by architects Rocco Magnoli and Lorenzo Carmellini, now showcase a luxurious musical-themed boutique hotel. The hotel interior was refreshed and renovated five years ago. ROOMS AND SUITES This luxury boutique hotel has a total of 51 guest rooms, 29 Deluxe Rooms, 16 Junior Suites, and 6 Signature Suites, all different, and each one offers contemporary, well-appointed furnishings, Saffron beds, and many opulent amenities. Suites are designed to feel like residences, are larger than the deluxe rooms, and look out onto the Winter Garden Atrium or Vrtba Garden. Each floor of the hotel has a distinct color scheme and is themed with décor and artwork depicting contemporary, classical, opera, or jazz music. ARTWORK IN THE HOTEL Steve and I loved our tour with Jan Horta, the hotel’s Director of Sales and Marketing. He told us that all the artwork in the hotel is part of the hotel owner’s private collection, a musicloving Czech film producer. Jan explained, “The idea behind the music-themed hotel was that an international language was music. We thought dedicating and naming each room after a different music artist would be a good idea. Rooms have a picture of the named artist. Artists include Mozart, Miles Davis, Jeff Baker, the Beatles, and so on. Each artist’s room is on the appropriate floor of the genre they

represent jazz, classical, opera, and contemporary. We have huge events in Prague and are a preferred hotel for many artists.” Many of the art pieces are originals by Salvador Dalí, and several original sculptures, statues, and paintings by Chagall, Kodet, and Franz von Stuck are represented throughout the hotel. MUSIC LIBRARY As a guest of the hotel on a recent visit, I was thoroughly impressed with the Music Library. Hotel guests can watch or listen to over 5,000 CDs and over 900 DVDs or videos. The music literature covers every music genre and includes the artists represented throughout the hotel. Music lovers can sit back and relax in the cozy leather chairs or take items back to their rooms to listen or watch in private. PRIVATE CINEMA Another unique room is the Private Cinema. This room reminded me of the quintessential man cave. Up to 12 guests can choose from the more than 900 movies, sit and watch for hours in comfortable chairs, and snack on their favorite movie fare, which can be ordered from the restaurant. Use of the cinema is first come, first serve. VRTBA GARDEN The Vrtba Garden is Prague’s oldest Baroque Garden and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Guests at the hotel have access to a private entrance to the terraced garden, which boasts an incredible view of the city. My husband Steve and I meandered through this stunning, professionally manicured garden first thing in the morning before the general

public entered and filled the pathways. WINTER GARDEN ATRIUM The Winter Garden Atrium sits at the center of the hotel. This palace-like garden space is perfect for reading a book, sipping a glass of wine, or listening to music in the evening. The Atrium is filled with light, has comfortable seating, and features concert-quality piano music. ROOFTOP TERRACE Guests can enjoy dinner and drinks on the Rooftop Terrace, which is open during nice weather in the summer. This area is available for parties upon request. FIREPLACE LOUNGE The Fireplace Lounge is another beautiful place to relax before dinner. CODA RESTAURANT CODA Restaurant is one of Prague’s top fine-dining restaurants. Steve and I enjoyed a tasty dinner during our stay. Coda Restaurant hired a new chef this fall. Executive Chef Igor Chramec sits at the helm and turns out delicious courses for hotel guests, locals, and other visitors to Prague. Those dining on Tuesday through Saturday will enjoy the live music played on the piano in the lounge. Breakfast is served each morning in the Coda Restaurant. It is both buffet style and a la carte. HARTWELL HOUSE | BY ADAM JACOT DE BOINOD

HOTEL

If you really want to get a Downton Abbey experience then come to Hartwell House (www.hartwell-house.com). For it’s a grand country house, steeped in history where you can live like an English nobleman. Louis XVIII lived here in exile and Lord Byron said of his return to rule France: “Why wouldst thou leave calm Hartwell’s green abode …”. During the Second World War, Hartwell served as a base for British and American troops. Bill Clinton stayed while President and it also hosted the G7 summit in 2013.

S

et in the Chilterns just outside Aylesbury, it’s close to Oxford, 45 minutes from Heathrow and only an hour (by train or car) from central London. The stately homes of Waddesdon Manor, Blenheim Palace and Hatfield House are near as is Bicester Village with its designer outlets, Woburn Safari Park and Silverstone (for Formula 1 fans). It’s one of only three hotels in the National Trust-owned Historic House Hotels collection. It’s approached, beside a long stone wall, by a lovely avenue of lime trees. It passes the ruins of a gothic church, formerly the family chapel, before reaching the house in front of which proudly stands the equestrian statue of Frederick, Prince of Wales. Hartwell House has stunning Jacobean and Georgian facades and is built from a gorgeous pale golden stone. I entered beneath a delightful corbel into The Great Hall. It’s the oldest part of the house. The Grandfather clock helped send me instantly back into another era. The hall has an English baroque design

“Hartwell’s Green Adobe is definitely fit for a King” with a huge tapestry decorating the wall and an ornate stuccoed ceiling. Several of the rooms have wonderful mammoth carpets, flocked wallpaper and gilded mirrors. There are chandeliers and log fires roared in the sculptured marble fireplaces. The Morning Room was exquisite and gorgeous with its light hues of silver, gold, green and pale blue. It felt very royal, especially as pride of place is given to a photograph of the visiting Queen Mother. There’s a Library, two lovely private dining rooms and an ecliptical hallway with a grand piano. I took my traditional afternoon tea in the emerald green drawing room in front of the croquet lawn. My tea consisted of cut sandwiches, cakes and scones all arranged on a silver cake stand. I then went up a staircase that had carved figures on each baluster depicting different figures. One was of Winston Churchill puffing his pipe and another of Lady Thatcher looking self-assured. Down the corridor with its Venetian ogee arches are some of the 48 bedrooms and suites. They start from $500 in this main house and from $370 in Hartwell Court per night. Mine was traditionally furnished with 89 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2023

fine paintings, ancient artefacts and antique furniture and had two large windows joyfully overlooking the grounds. For dinner a waiter in tails brought me a series of delights from the selective menu in the Soane Dining Room. It has doubleheight windows and convex mirrors reflecting the candlelight beneath the high ceiling. It overlooked the greenest of lawns and was where I sat outside the next morning for breakfast on an expansive stone patio with its two sculpted stone sphinxes to enjoy the vista. Such was the scale of the landscape that I noticed how small were the figures of walkers in the distance. They contrasted with the enormity of the trees that varied from walnut to cedar of Lebanon, from sycamore to Giant Sequoia, from Tulip Tree to Beech and from Chusan Fan Palm to London Plane Tree. It was all very healing. This beautiful landscape isn’t manicured but is naturally stunning. My magical trail was a circular walk around the grounds, with my map resembling a treasure trail. It took me in and out of daylight as the paths winded through the woods before opening into the grand expanse of the grounds that constitute 90 acres of landscaped gardens and parkland. It’s all very peaceful and secluded. A heron, a swan and some ducks inhabit the tranquil

lake. At dusk the rooks converge to roost with great exclaim as the trees rustled their leaves. There’s a sunken pond, a rose garden and a spring garden with a path planted with 10,000 daffodils. Dotted around the landscape are statues of Zeus and Juno, an obelisk, a Folly Arch, a pavilion, an icehouse and a gothic tower. If there are a number of you I recommend renting the Old Rectory, next to the chapel, with its private driveway and outdoor pool. In the orchard are apricot, peach, pear and plum trees and the apples are used to make the apple juice served at breakfast. The orchard leads into two tennis courts cocooned within the high brick walls of the former kitchen garden. In the many outhouses are the former 18th century stables, coach house and indoor riding school. Here are the further bedrooms of Hartwell Court and it’s also where lies the Hartwell Spa with its gym and sauna. Within a separate orangery lies the swimming pool built to resemble a Roman bath with deep, rich terracotta walls set against grand pillars and large, white archways. So grounding are the grounds and so dignified is the main house. How sad to “leave calm Hartwell’s green abode”. It’s definitely fit for a king. 

VERMEJO

TED TURNER RESERVE | BY JARONE ASHKENAZI

O

ften, the road less traveled is such for good reason. It’s a treacherous, off-the-beaten path, but more often, that is precisely what makes a place special. And that’s exactly the case for Vermejo, a Ted Turner Reserve. The four-hour drive from either Denver or Albuquerque to the sprawling 550,000-acre Reserve in northern New Mexico offers a diverse landscape with awe-inspiring views, a

plethora of activities, and a stunning record—and continued effort—of conservation. Beyond its wide variety of luxury and rustic accommodations, rejuvenating wellness programs, and three gourmet meals a day, Vermejo offers ample year-round outdoor activities and opportunities for guests to enjoy and explore nature. Purchased by Ted Turner in 1996 with a commitment to conserving the land and the threatened species that call it home, Vermejo is a remarkable place where the ecosystem is balanced and respected. The Reserve is home to one of the world’s purest herds of American bison, the Castle Rock herd, numbering 1000. Through the efforts of their offsite and infield teams of wildlife biologists, they have successfully restored the riverbank, which was destroyed through erosion from overgrazing by former cattle operations and an overpopulation of elk on the land. With the removal of cattle, careful studies of elk carrying capacity, and specific placement of enclosures throughout the property, healthy waterways were created, aiding in saving the imperiled Rio Grande cutthroat trout. Today, there is a robust trout population, and guests

92 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2023

can fish for this species on the property. Their conservation efforts go far beyond just the restoration of the species, as biologists have been busy restoring the forests and streams to aid in the abundance of wildlife. The health of the Vermejo River watershed has been restored to enhance trout habitats and promote keystone species such as beaver, while they have been continuing efforts to restore Ponderosa Pine and Aspen. To repair damage caused by clearcutting and deforestation that occurred on the property long before Turner’s purchase, Vermejo aims to treat 1,200 acres annually to thin the ponderosa pine forests back to pre-settlement conditions, creating a more open and sustainable forest canopy. Since 2008, forestry treatments have been implemented to stimulate the regeneration of aspen stands in the upland forests that have been declining for years. These efforts are shown first-hand by the highly knowledgeable and friendly staff on site. From guides to their food and beverage team to the ranch hands, each staff member greets you with a warm smile, their backstory of how they came to the Reserve, and why

they chose to work here. After spending several days on the property, two commonalities arose. First was that each staff member had an intrinsic passion for conservation and being part of a company that truly believes and practices their company mission. Second was the fact that without prodding, each member was proud to boast that they were happy and honored to be a part of one of the premier properties in their respective discipline. Two half-day or one full-day activity is included with each day of your stay, and Activities Director Jason Ladjevic and his team of guides are thrilled to share their encyclopedic knowledge of the history of the land and the company’s conservation efforts while exploring the property during enjoyable outdoor excursions or dedicated conservation tours. Guests can explore the picturesque land with knowledgeable guides and try their hand at lake or stream fishing, learn fly fishing 101, or even go ice fishing in the winter. Home to a wide variety of wildlife, including elk, bison, black bears, and mountain lions, the property also features over 12 miles of mapped and marked hiking trails accessible from the main lodge, explorable with or without a guide, a Via Ferrata natural climbing park, 19 fishable lakes, 30 miles of streams, and a deep history in shooting sports. Whether you are a novice or an expert marksman, instructors teach guests to master the five-stand shotgun, wobble deck, or rifle shooting. The property honors its past as a sportsman lodge, with a unique curriculum during the winter geared toward the forest-to-table harvest of organic, wild protein, but with science-based conservation efforts front-and-center. These Forest-to-Table workshops offer novice

sportsmen, women, and youth the opportunity to learn the vital role hunting plays in conservation and promotes a greater respect for how food comes to one’s plate. As part of their weekly Vermejo happenings, meet the culinary and gardening teams at the Greenhouse to learn about their organic, chemical-free growing methods and greenhouse-to-table menu planning. During the summer, come hungry as the team prepares an authentic Cowboy Breakfast near headquarters on Tuesday mornings and the Merrick Lake Fish Fry on Friday nights. Make sure to catch their Thursday night Cinema under the Stars on the Lodge Lawn, or kick back with one of Bartender Will’s handcrafted cocktails on the Veranda. Other elevated experiences guests can book include the Koehler Mining Tour, High Country Horseback Ride, and the High Country Lakes UTV Tour & Hike (each $800 for up to four guests). Offering the broadest range of housing options of the Ted Turner Reserves properties— currently, there are four in New Mexico—Vermejo has the ideal accommodation to match your party size and preferences. With a history dating back to 1902, Casa Grande, a renovated 25,000 square-foot stone mansion, offers seven guest rooms and a massive great room that will transport you to an elegant soiree from the past. Turner House exudes old-world grandeur with an elegant interior offering ten guest rooms and a lovely gas fire pit to spend an evening gazing at the stars above. The property also offers five Cottages ranging from three to five bedrooms and the eight-bedroom Costilla Fishing Lodge, located 45 minutes from the main lodge up in the high country. Vermejo will also introduce

94 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2023

waterfront Bernal Lake Cabin next Spring, a secluded private two-master suite accommodation with exclusive access to Bernal Lake. Executive Chef Giovanni Lanzante and Vermejo’s talented culinary staff further connect guests to nature through their regional of the land menu and memorable culinary adventures. With an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients and bold Southwestern gusto, the menu features garden-fresh produce and local game, ensuring freshness, quality, and bold flavors. From expertly prepared meals which are served at the Lodge, on the Veranda, in a private dining room at Costilla or Casa Grande, or even during an intimate picnic with a view, the culinary team will even prepare a guest’s fresh catch in a wide variety of offerings such as fritters, trout salsa, or delectable filets. Guests can further bolster their experience at Vermejo by booking culinary adventures like the Sunset Cocktail Tour, High Tea, and History experience, cooking classes, or a six-course Opulence Tasting Menu. With a minimum stay of two nights, rates include all meals, snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, and two daily guided activities co-curated before arrival, with guest’s preferences in mind. Expert Reserve Ambassadors like Sarianna Grossetete reach out to each guest to explain more about the Reserve and understand what they hope to gain from their experience before suggesting tailored activities for each guest. The Reserve offers something for everyone, and each day provides a fresh opportunity and a new corner of the massive property to explore. 

Luxury Adventure Travel at Four of the

BEST OF THE ALPS | BY PRISCILLA PILON

Luxury meets adventure in the Best of the Alps in four upscale, dynamic European destinations. Paragliding in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, white water rafting in Chamonix, France, hiking to a flower-filled plateau in Courmayeur, Italy, for a picnic lunch, and flying high above Megève, France, to view the famous Mont Blanc by private plane are just a few of the exciting possibilities for summer activities in the region. WHERE TO STAY Six Senses in Crans-Montana is nestled in a forest of pine trees on the slope side of the mountain, and as with every Six Senses› property, this hotel focuses on wellness and relaxation. It is a beautiful spot to decompress after an exhilarating experience like paragliding. Their spa offers multiple treatments and programs to help travelers loosen stressed muscles or get sleep therapy interventions that work so well you might just put the art of sheep counting out of business. Little ones enjoy the Earth Lab and kid›s club, and teenagers are entertained with a tricked-out game room and disco. Pack light, and don›t take up valuable luggage space because Six Senses has you covered with the following items—rain jackets, umbrellas, and day knapsacks. The fully stocked mini-bar includes Swiss wines, Swiss gins with mixers, and a 24-hour hospitality area with tea, coffee, and sweet treats. Hotel Mont Blanc in Chamonix is in the heart of the village; its 100-year-old historical charm and updated interior design are tastefully combined. Their outside dining terrace and inside cocktail lounge spaces are popular locations for après ski or après hikes where the cuisine and libations please hotel guests and locals alike. We stayed in a well-appointed, spacious, two-bedroom, two-bath duplex suite with a balcony overlooking the gorgeous grounds below and the majestic Mont Blanc above. Guests can›t beat the convenient hotel location for its proximity to specialty shops, dining options, and nightlife venues. Knowledgeable concierges are helpful and adept at pointing guests in the right direction for all their hiking, skiing, or shopping needs. Auberge de la Maison in Courmayeur is a short distance to town. Auberge is as authentic an Italian Alps experience as possible. Charming rooms decorated with a combination of antiques and contemporary touches add an air of sophistication that would otherwise seem overly played. Their bed linens are divine—soft to the touch, just the right amount of down filling, and very cozy. Our suite offered a generous wrap-around couch and an upstairs petit loft perfect for a third guest. Cleverly placed windows showcased views of the mountains in all the right places. A generous-sized porch with comfortable upholstered furniture was ideal for an evening debrief of 96 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2023

Four Seasons Megève is a stunning resort in the quiet slope side area above the town. The hotel is a dream spot for summer lounging or more engaging summer activities—golfing, biking, and hiking. We stayed in an elegant, enormous one-bedroom, two-bath suite with

SUMMER TO DO’S Crans-Montana is a hiker›s paradise with an easy yet daredevilish trail we liked; it was not for the faint of heart, but it offered breathtaking views on the narrowest section of the Bisse du Ro path to the hanging bridge.

an après hiking happy hour were popular with locals and visitors. We soldiered on a hike up the Bisse du Tsitorett, passing by stunning La Tieche waterfalls as we ascended; it took a couple of hours. Then, in tandem, we effortlessly paraglided to the Sierre Valley with the expert and fun-loving pilots from Flyin’ High. After observing the family-run operation up close, we finished the day with wine tasting at La Tambourin. Vineyard grapes are brought into the family home basement, processed by hand, and made into award-winning wine by owner Ismael Bonvin. Chamonix has a vast array of trails. To help you decide which one is right for your skill level, we recommend booking with the Compagnie des Guides. Chamonix mountain guides are legendary worldwide, and our private guide, Ben, was no exception. While on breaks to rest our legs, Ben shared his love of the area and extensive geography knowledge with us. We trekked along the graciously shaded trail from Brévent to Flégère. It’s possible to do the vice-versa (poles are helpful), noting it still gives awe-inspiring glimpses of Mont Blanc on clear days and at least the Aiguille du Midi on most days. Another favorite outdoor activity in the heart of the town is white water rafting. We braved the frigid water temperatures and rafted on the River Arve (book this activity through Compagnie des Guides). It was a perfect adrenaline-junky activity for us and the family that joined us with their older children. We jumped in the water for an added rush. It was chilly but easily tolerated, thanks to the wetsuits provided for us. Courmayeur was a great destination to take advantage of the clear skies above the clouds for sweeping views of the Italian side of Mont Blanc via their cable car ride, the SkyWay. We saw the Giant Tooth rock formation clearly from this unique vantage point, and on the way down, we stopped at Europe’s highest garden—Giardino Alpino Saussurea. Auberge Hotel packed us an outstanding picnic lunch fit for a king and queen, which we gladly tucked into our backpacks before heading up the steep but safe trail from Ermitage to La Suche. We stopped at a plateau covered with wildflowers in pink, purple, yellow, and blue hues. The rolling hills offer scenes that we swore were straight from the backdrop of The Sound of Music. It was the perfect location for a picnic, with unobstructed views of Mont Blanc. Solo on the trails, we enjoyed the peace and relaxation before stressing the quads for the walk down. Afterward, boutique shopping followed by happy hour at Gou in town was necessary and oh-so delightful. It was too rainy for us, but

we recommend you take an E-bike tour of Val Veny for more mountain adventures. We did work in a tour of the stunning Grandes Jorasses Golf Club. This nine-hole course was a treat in terms of natural beauty with its alpine views, and their clubhouse restaurant served delicious home-cooking Italian fare. Megève has electronic bikes you can take down to town from the Four Seasons hotel or along many trails throughout the valley and back up again, stopping for a round of golf or a coffee. You can even ride them to the small local airport and hire a tourist plane from Aérocime to fly you within a few short minutes above the clouds for unparalleled panoramic views of Mont Blanc›s mythical peaks. Shopping is a strength for this hamlet, and there is no better place to choose personally tailored clothes than at the legendary shop, Allard. This institution has been around since 1926. And just up the street is their accessories shop with one-of-a-kind leather handbags, purses, wallets, and scarves. Megève spa days are must days. If you are staying at the Four Seasons, relax by the indoor/outdoor pool or have a facial at the spa. If staying in town, Hotel Mont Blanc›s Igloo Spa features Pure Altitude products for personalized skin treatments and unwinding massages in cool treatment cabins (pun intended). WHERE TO EAT Crans-Montana has some super lunch spots. We loved Six Senses’ Wild Cabin and gobbled up their specialty wood-fired pizza, homemade pasta, and healthy, gluten-free options. For a casual lunch in Montana, we opted for the charming Le Mayen, where we devoured raclette featuring four local (Valais region) cheeses. A dinner must is at Le Mont-Blanc’s one Michelin-star restaurant at Hotel LeCrans, where we enjoyed sensational views of the mountains and valleys below. We appreciated their cuisine more by experiencing their Terroir Tasting Menu, thrilled with the masterful food and wine pairings. Some alpine adventures require early morning departures before restaurants are open; Six Senses’ room service was exceptionally accommodating. We ordered an eclectic assortment of American-style breakfast items. Everything arrived precisely as expected, tasted terrific, and started us off on the right foot. In Chamonix, we tried a couple of in-town options in the past, but nothing beat our meal this summer at Hotel Mont Blanc’s signature restaurant, La Matafan. We swooned over our alfresco dinner on their terrace with mountain and city views. For a casual en plein aire lunch,

100 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2023

we tried the hiker’s paradise Chalet Refuge de la Boërne, Trélechamps, and walked along the public path behind the rooms for outstanding views. Another casual and super local spot is the relatively new Terrace du Tennis. It has a limited but tasty menu. A shot of their homemade Ginepee is a must. One of my favorite elevated dining options was the Rosebud Restaurant in Le Lavancher. Their exceptional cuisine is in a refined but casual atmosphere for a special dinner on the mountain. Well-crafted cocktail specials added to the exciting dining options. Our Courmayeur breakfast at the hotel featured tiers of pastries, individual pots of fresh fruits, homemade granola, and yogurts at L’Aubergine, and a delightful dinner that included traditional gastronomy using ingredients from their gardens and local producers. Dinner in town at Cadran Solaire was a treat. They believe they could make a menu without traditional polenta or pasta, but we agree that it wouldn›t make them or their guests happy. The food was as soulful as the mood lighting. Rarely do I love the sconces and chandeliers as much as the food. They made an impression. Après hike cocktails were best on the terrace at Guo in the heart of the village. Foodies will want to try the gourmet yet unfussy lunch at Grandes Jorasses Golf Club (open to the public), and hikers will surely prefer to order a picnic lunch and eat it in the meadows of their favorite trail. Megeve’s gem, Flocons Village, serves “no-nonsense food for epicureans” in a charming atmosphere. In the center of town, this petit bistro was a delight created by three Michelin-star chef Emmanuel Renaut. His devotion to respecting local cheese producers meant diners like us got the absolute best at their tables. In contrast to local cuisine, Kaito at the Four Seasons is known for its Japanese classics with alpine views. Dinner for us was perfectly casual yet formally served. Kaito was convenient for golfers, skiers, and hikers like us, as was La Ferme du Golf at the end of the Mont d’Arbois Golf Course. Everything they served, including beers on tap, was produced locally. Their food combined easy slopeside salads and burgers to comfort food raclettes and fondues. Every item chosen was with a positive intention to showcase local farmers respecting nature in every dish. For a fun night out with the family, try pizza and bowling at Cosa Papa. We were a table of two, but we enjoyed it. Even if you strike out in the lanes, you will score well with the authentic Neapolitan pizza. Whether you choose Megève, Courmayeur, Chamonix, or Crans-Montana, one thing is guaranteed – a super atmosphere to push your physical limits, unwind afterward, and experience luxury adventure travel made easy.

TIPS TO MAKE THE JOURNEY EASY Crans-Montana – Fly into Geneva, about a 3-hour drive, rent your car on the Swiss side, and return to the Swiss side. Schedule wellness and sleep lab sessions in advance at Six Senses. Chamonix – When selecting which hiking trail is best for you, stop by the Mountaineering office for a map and a quick chat about your fitness level and appropriate courses; better yet, hire a private guide to show you the highlights. her you heard that Hurricane, UT, got its name from the wind blowing the top off a horse buggy in 1860. Hurricane is the city address of Sand Hollow, a course annually ranked as one of Utah’s best of the best. Even the bunkers at Sand Hollow feature red sand, so the contrast between the John Fought-designed lush green fairways and the red-on-red surroundings is striking. Fought was wise to allow golfers to warm up a bit on Sand Hollow’s front nine before delivering a mountain-rich back nine that builds a steady crescendo of landscape strokes of brilliance. The eye-opening views begin with a stadium-sized 180-degree vista beyond the 11th green. Next, the 12th hole tee box sits on a cliff looking out at a death-defying ravine on your left and red rock mountains on your right. The 13th hole continues with the plunging left-side ravine scare and a humbling mountainscape to your right. The 15th hole is another cliff-to-cliff scene stealer over a gaping gorge. Sand Hollow Golf Course is an adrenaline junkie’s dream.

In 2022, 4.6 million people visited Zion National Park to experience the red, pink, and cream-colored Stay While You Play – mountain ranges that are the stuff Sand Hollow Resort of legend for hikers, climbers, and artists alike. In the mid-1960s someCOPPER ROCK GOLF COURSE one thought, “Wouldn’t this be a fabulous setting for a golf course?” When Copper Rock Golf Course burst on

Fast forward to the last 15 years, and the Greater Zion region now plays host to 13 golf courses with stunning mountain backdrops. Golfers from around the world travel to Southern Utah to play three of Zion’s best: Sand Hollow Golf Course, Copper Rock Course, and Black Desert Golf Course. Let’s take an inside look at these three world-class golf layouts featuring soaring red mountain ranges, the deepest ravines, and even black lava rock dating back thousands of years. the Greater Zion golf scene in 2020, the LPGA immediately recognized that this mountainous beauty was made for television. Enter the Copper Rock Championship on the Epson Tour in 2023 and the upcoming LPGA Senior Championship in 2024. Each of Copper Rock’s 18 holes features the Pine Valley Mountains, the Hurricane Cliffs, or you guessed it, Zion National Park. Copper Rock has taken to naming its golf holes, and a favorite is the 478-yard, Par 4, 13th hole. You won’t feel an earthquake at this exhilarating Tom Weiskopf design, but you will encounter waves of black lava rock dating back to when Fred Flintstone wielded a five iron. One of the unique aspects of your Black Desert round is that Weiskopf ’s voice is piped into your cart’s GPS screen with his design thoughts for each of this golf masterpiece’s 18 holes. Weiskopf ’s final design before his passing will compete with any course in the world for one-of-a-kind ambience, unique golf shots, and an everlasting impression of the Snow Canyon and Padre Canyon mountain ranges. The Greater Zion area is investing $2 billion into Black Desert. That’s billion with a “b.” This 630-acre development will include 3,330 living spaces, hotels, resort pool, conference center, restaurants, and a wellness center. Discover Luxury, Off-The-Beaten Path Destinations with

GEOGRAPHIC EXPEDITIONS | BY JARONE ASHKENAZI PHOTOS COURTESY OF GEOEX

SHIKOKU, JAPAN

If you’re after extraordinary experiences in edge-of-the-map locales, look no further than Geographic Expeditions (GeoEx) as they specialize in high-end and off-the-beaten-path trips. Offering participants itineraries spanning from eye-opening adventure tours, treks and safaris, cultural tours, cruises, and rail journeys—to all seven continents. As a pioneer of travel to remote and challenging destinations since 1982, they offer intimate group trips or private trips to explore the world’s undiscovered marvels in over 70 countries. Recently, the pioneering travel company, announced five recommendations on where to travel in 2024.

While Japan is a perennially popular destination, GeoEx recommends adventuring far off the beaten tourist path to the unspoiled island of Shikoku, nestled in the Inland Sea between the main island of Honshu and the Pacific Ocean. While most travelers rarely venture beyond Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, Shikoku presents another Japan of pristine landscapes, pilgrimage temples and country kindness. Explore its rural reaches from the 88-temple pilgrims’ route that encircles the island and to the isolated Iya Valley for unforgettable stays in a renovated 300-year-old thatched-roof farmhouse. The remote inn with an open-air riverside onsen hot spring bath can be reached only by cable car. 105 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2023

GeoEx believes that 2024 will be Sri Lanka’s year to shine after recovering from a period of internal conflict. The island country in the Indian Ocean, southwest of the Bay of Bengal, is famous for producing finest tea, rubber and coconut, as well as exotic spices. Sri Lanka offers an enchanting abundance of riches: delicious and innovative cuisine, remarkable wildlife and biodiversity, historic monuments and fabulous hotels. With experiences ranging from wandering the resonant ruins of an ancient capital, to hiking the lush, rolling hills of colonial tea estates, to tracking Asian elephants through the jungle, to savoring fiery curries and mingling at an art-filled bazaar, Sri Lanka is an endless surprise. 106 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2023

Due to the completion of a road into Zanskar which will unlock the remote riches of Ladakh, GeoEx believes that travel in India will richly rebound in 2024. This massive country, the seventh-largest country by area, offers the bustle of big cities along with a plethora of breathtaking Himalayan landscapes and charming villages. Visit the hard-to-reach tribal areas in Odisha and go to Kaziranga National Park to watch for Royal Bengal tigers, rhinoceros and water buffalo on safari. From verdant valleys, cliff-hanging monasteries, world-class culinary tradition, history of yoga and Ayurveda, the country is a very spiritual place with many colorful festivals. For example the Hornbill festival in Nagaland, a 10-day celebration of 16 local tribes and their cultures, with music, dance, arts and a variety of other activities is a must.

The mystical Buddhist kingdom in the Himalaya is known for its monasteries, fortresses (dzongs) and inspiring mountain scenery. From its vibrant festivals to the country’s commitment to sustainable tourism development, you are met with traditional, devout and friendly people, along with comfortable accommodations that range from modest to high end. Travelers can experience the verdant landscape (as more than 70 percent of the country is still covered by forest) and hike into central Bhutan, through hidden valleys and tiny terraced hamlets, where travelers can experience off-the-beaten-path cultural encounters and deeply personal interactions.

Famous for its beautiful and sunny beaches, lush natural attractions and a vibrant food scene, recently the Southeast Asian country has welcomed new luxury resorts into its offerings. From Shinta Mani Wild in the Cardamom Mountains and Six Senses Krabey Island in the sea off the southern coast, travelers can now enjoy a true luxury immersion in Cambodia. A trip to Cambodia will offer travelers everything from ancient ruins and culture, cuisine and handicrafts, rainforest and jungle and sublime beaches. Adventurers can head to the little-visited Cardamom Forest Protected Area for an abundance of activities, while in Angkor, after exploring the glorious temples, venture farther to visit the rarely touristed pre-Angkorian temples at Sambor Prei Kuk.

CENTAURI HONEY

The Best Quality & Most Expensive Honey offers Health Benefits | BY JARONE ASHKENAZI

L

abeled as the most expensive honey in the world, Centauri Honey is harvested from Turkish caves and rock faces situated between altitudes of 1,900 to 3,000 meters. The starting price for this elixir is $16,500 per kg (and goes up to $1,100,000 for the Centauri Cave—Emerald, which is available only once every 15 years), and with this high sticker price actually comes with some health benefits. Beyond its sweetness and delectable taste, the honey earned its spot in the Guinness World Records two years ago as the world’s priciest honey. The premium honey stems from a distinct colony of bees feasting on native medicinal herbs and is priced at $10,800 per kilogram in 2021. “Our highly sought-after honey has attracted industry leaders and connoisseurs alike, looking for pure, high-quality honey that also has health and wellness advantages,” said Ahmet Eren Çakır, CEO & Managing Director. This ‘liquid gold’ is highly effective with its anti-inflammatory effects on colon cancer, high immunity-boosting properties, and other health benefits. Some clients have been using the honey on their faces for anti-aging properties. The diet of these bees (Ahmet and his team feed the bees a unique mixture of honey at the cave entrance) at high altitude amplifies their production of phenol, flavonoid, and antioxidant contents backed by scientific evaluations, not just anecdotal evidence. Ahmet is proud to boast a different technique to extract the honey and makes sure he only removes around 15 kilograms per year, which preserves the hive as well as the exclusivity of the product. The team at Centauri Honey not only allows the honeycombs

to absorb intense minerals from deep cave stones from between 10-500 meters below but recruits top speleologists (a scientist who studies caves or a person who goes into caves as a sport) who risk their lives each time, placing honeycombs on proper places inside the cave as instructed and aging the honeycombs for a specific amount of time. Following the honey extraction each harvest, Centauri Honey works with two laboratories in Turkey to find out the medicinal and chemical values of the batch. Following the results, he sends samples to Professor Patricia Rijo in Portugal for antimicrobial and anti-cancer examination before further testing in Europe. “I am very proud that Centauri Honey has begun tests on animals on cancerous cells to understand scientifically the true medicinal nature of this product,” said Ahmet. “My main goal is to start with the clinical trials in the next five years, which will be a big hurdle to overcome.” To preserve the production method of the liquid gold, Ahmet keeps the details of the production method secured in a bank vault hidden in the cave. The true mystique of the honey further adds to its price tag. Centauri Honey is bottled in handmade bottles partially covered in gold with each purchaser’s name written on the bottle, further adding to the allure of the honey. After reserving, the time to produce the honey is two to nine months, so place your orders soon to have a sweet taste of Centauri Honey for next year. Centauri Honey is also a proud partner of charities and animal shelters and sponsors conferences regarding natural drug discoveries.

TERASA U ZLATE STUDNE RESTAURANT AND CHEF LUKÁŠ HLAVÁČEK | BY TRACY ELLEN BEARD

T

he Terasa U Zlate studne restaurant, located on the top floor and the terrace of the Golden Well Hotel, is one of Prague’s best fine dining destinations. The restaurant features breathtaking views of “the city of one hundred spires.” Italian architects Lorenzo Carmelini and Katrin Herden showcase their merged style of modern design and elements of the Renaissance era in the restaurant’s new interior. Golden Well Hotel boasts one of only 40 restaurants that have earned the “Rémy Martin Louis XIII. Fortress” label. Each hotel’s staff must be specially trained to handle this precious Cognac, and at the Golden Well Hotel, it is served in the bar and at the restaurant.

CHEF LUKÁŠ HLAVÁČEK Forbes Magazine chose Chef Lukáš Hlaváček as one of the 30 under 30 most talented professional chefs in the recent past. Before returning to his home in the Czech Republic, Chef Lukáš worked at the 3-star Michelin Restaurant Meadowood in Napa Valley in the United States. He came to the restaurant in December of 2022 and operated under the current chef; then, in February 2023, he took over and began serving his menu.

AN INTERVIEW WITH CHEF LUKÁŠ HLAVÁČEK How often do you change the menu? I originally planned to change the menu every three months, but we have changed it more often because spring and summer products are often only available for one month, and I like to change the menu and use fresh products.

Why did you choose cooking? My mom did not like to cook; it was boring for her. No one from my family enjoys cooking, but we all love to eat. I love tasty food, so I began preparing it, and I never really wanted to do anything else. What is your style of cooking? I cook what I like to eat. It is always about getting the best ingredients, and here at Terasa U Zlate studne, I have the budget to buy them. I don’t care how far I must go to get them. I will buy things from France if they are better than what I can get locally. When you are talking about the price level of my food, it must be the best. My customers care more about the taste of the food than where it came from. Regarding my style, I try to cook a little lighter and bring in some Asian elements. I don’t use fish sauce, but I like more modern ingredients like dashi. I buy some ingredients locally, but they are the very best I can get. My cooking is a little bit regional, a little bit French, and a lot Lukáš. Who are your customers? I’d say that 40 % are local and 60% are international. Some locals come every two or three weeks, so I change the menu frequently. What wines do you pair with your food? Most of our wines are from Austria, Germany, and France, with a few from the United States. What is one of your favorite parts of the job? I love working with my pastry chef. I give him an idea, maybe what I want a dish to look like and the texture I am thinking about, and he creates it.

a Foie Gras Terrine and the Fjord Trout from Germany. Chef Lukáš said, “The terrine is very French and old school. It is a foie gras mousse mixed with cream and made into a ganache. It is like butter. I serve it with poached rhubarb, almonds, and brioche. I like only putting two or three amazing things on a plate and keeping it simple.” Next, we had the third course, the Fjord trout covered with buckwheat skin, which is very Czech. The chef said, “I serve it with asparagus and beurre blanc with cucumber cubes and caviar. This dish is crazy moist and delicious.” My old chef told me, “It is very easy to make a complicated dish, but it is so hard to make a simple one.” The trout was followed by a gorgeous Halibut Wrapped in a Zucchini Flower with olives and a beurre blanc sauce. It was moist and tasty. The final savory dish was Angus Royal Steak and Rib with smoked bone marrow, black truffle, white radish, and truffle sauce. The flavors were rich and decadent. As is typical with a tasting menu, there was more than one sweet to finish the meal. The first was Chocolate Valrhona Semifreddo with Hazelnut Cream and salted caramel. This course exploded with texture and was delightfully sweet without going overboard. To finish, we received a selection of Homemade Petit Fours. This delightful selection was the perfect way to end a glorious meal. Dinner at Terasa U Zlate studne restaurant is a must when visiting Prague. 

Dinner at Terasa U Zlate studne Restaurant My husband, Steve, and I enjoyed the tasting menu on the terrace. We began with a couple of amuse-bouches, a delicious fresh Pea Tart, and a White Asparagus tart with Smoked Duck Breast, Chicory, Grapes, and Walnuts. Then we moved on to two of the chef ’s favorite dishes, 113 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2023

for release this autumn! For a more than decent Pinot Noir you don’t have to go to Pringle Bay in South Africa, Williamette Valley in Oregon, California’s Sonoma coast, Russian Valley or Napa Valley (where the Bread & Butter Pinot Noir is excellent, via Majestic at £15) or Elk Cove (www.adnams.co.uk), Central Otago or Rapaura Springs in New Zealand, German Spatburgunder, Pzalz Villa Wolf. Peter Zemmer’s south Tyrolean Riserva Vigna Kofl Or Rollhut Alato Adige, Romanian Cramele Recas Sorcova, Chile’s Casablanca and Aconcagua valleys or Majestic’s King Of Wrath . British Pinot Noir is an increasingly trustworthy wine category. You can’t go astray with Lyme Regis Winery, Sharpham, Luke’s Balfour, Denbies and the London Cru urban winery. How often do you make seasonal wild mushroom risotto and how many times do you come home to duck or game and a fridge in which someone has considerately placed a bottle of not very affordable Burgundy to chill for two hours at the connoisseur recommended 12C? Probably about the same amount of times you have ordered a Chassagne-Montrachat in a Michelin restaurant and read the words Gevrey-Chambertin appellation on thebel brought by one of your supper-on-a-knee

guests. But far less times than you have twisted the neck off a light and fruity Californian. And far less occasions than you have squirmed when you have heard yourself talk about “funky, earthy wines with vibrant black cherry pie jostling for recognition along with dried strawberries, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg.” Burgundy is very expensive and New World much easier to pronounce than Patrice Rion Nuits-St-Georges Clos Saint-Marc Premier Cru. Pinot Noir drinkers go more ‘old world’ the more they spend. Vivino is a good source of quality Pino Noirs. Pinot Noir is a crowd-pleaser for everyone from the wine curious to the wine connoisseur. Its low tannins and fruity palate are a winning combination. It “goes” with beef, salmon, trout, beef and duck. Tuna too. Pinot Noir is a real goer. The art of Pinot Noir is being further honed in England by Chapel Down, Gusbourne and the lesser known Nutbourne in Pulborough, Sussex where the Gladwin family make 100% Pinor Noir still as well as sparkling and blush. All with labels with “sentimental, meaningful and frivolous” paintings by Brid-

get Gladwin. Says vineyard owner Peter Gladwin: “Pinot Noir is a wonderfully versatile grape. It is the varietal that we have most. We have both Champagne and Burgundy clones and use Pinot Noir in all three of our sparkling “Nutty” wines. Also, when the year and the sunshine is on our side, we make a single varietal still red. Any remainder is added to our estate’s field blend Sussex Reserve where it adds body to our renowned aromatic still white.” Burgundy may be the home of Pinot Noir but the southern counties of the New World are its second and supermarkets third. Once you might very rarely have come home to an explosion of dominating red cherry fruit laced with herbal and muted florals, all woven through an allspice-laden matrix and rarely “a profile allowing complete integration of fruit, acidity, and subtle structure”. But now Pinot Noir is accessible. The great wine grape will make a great impression on your palate as you make one on your sofa. You don’t need a special occasion or restaurant. You can now enjoy at home a great grape with a touch of toastiness and refreshing acidity. Sit and watch the news with Pinot Noir. Forget fripperies like pan-fried whole Dover sole and herb-crusted pork loin. And don’t even mention “grippy, svelte tannins”. Pinot Noir pairs well with a chair. With company and without.

Following the release of his 2017 book entitled 5 Ingredients – Quick & Easy Food, readers kept asking for another book where they only need 5 key ingredients to create an enjoyable meal. Inspired by Jamie’s travels, 5 Ingredients Mediterranean contains over 120 delicious, easy-to-follow recipes with food that will create a Mediterranean vibe at home. Celebrating hero flavors, ingredients, and combinations, it gives cooks a taste of sunnier climates to share with family and friends. A large chunk of the book has meat-free recipes, but in true Jamie-style, they are all super-tasty.

Offering a substitute to the understated aesthetic so ubiquitous within modern interior design, Maximalism, published by Phaidon, showcases more than just a visual survey. It is an extraordinary celebration of an eccentric decorative urge, presenting a new interpretation of a style that often spurs controversy and dismissal. “Without the exuberance and excess of maximalism,” contributor Simon Doonan writes, “[minimalism] has no raison d’être.” Maximalism may be provocative, and at times even gaudy, but nevertheless is “too big to fail.” Packaged in a luxurious gold cover, with metallic gold ink on every page and quotes from figures such as Andy Warhol, Dolly Parton, and Liberace interspersed throughout, Maximalism is a bold portrait of this flamboyant style.

A multi-award winning Los Angeles-based interior designer, Martyn Lawrence Bullard is globally recognized for his expansive range of styles, and diverse yet refined and inviting interiors. In Star Style, Interiors of Martyn Lawrence Bullard, published by Vendome, he allows readers a look into his own masterfully created homes in Los Angeles and Palm Springs. With the most stunning photography by Douglas Friedman, and forward by Cher, readers will love seeing the interiors of Kylie Jenner, Khloë Kardashian, Ellen Pompeo, Elton John & David Furnish, and Tommy & Dee Hilfiger to name a few. 118 | UPSCALELIVINGMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2023
