Vania Leles A Bejeweled Journey | By Smitha Sadanandan

G

Guinea-Bissau-born jewelry designer Vania Leles has a penchant for finding delightful inspirations – be it in nature, travels or fond childhood memories. This time, she has scoured through the annals of history all the way to Africa and back. On this creative journey, she stumbled upon a gem of a story: a story of two phenomenal women; a story of hope and triumph mired in the saga of slavery. Vania’s arduous research helped her discover more about these extraordinary women from the 19th century: Dido Elizabeth Belle and Sarah Forbes Bonetta. Dido Belle was of mixed-race and her father, who was a naval captain, brought her to England and raised her as a free woman. Dido Belle went on to become “Britain’s first Black aristocrat.” Sarah Bonetta was a West African girl from the Yourba clan, who was captured in a slave hunt and later sold as a ‘present’ to Queen Victoria. The Queen took the girl under her wing, and soon her life was transformed.

Legends of Africa Positivity joined forces with creativity, as Vania collaborated with Gemfields. She crafted a five-piece high jewelry collection – featuring ethically sourced Zambian emeralds and diamonds – for her Legends of Africa emerald collection that was released this summer. Comprising two bold rings, an asymmetrical collar necklace, chandelier cascade earrings and an eye-catching cuff, the collection is an ode to Dido Belle and Sarah Bonetta. “I was struck by their stories and how, from difficult beginnings, they were swept up by English aristocrats and welcomed into British society. They are wonderful stories of hope and I found that really exciting,” says Vania, who took nearly two years to put together the Gemfields Legends of Africa collection. With Gemfields and Vania both sharing “the same ethos and commitment to the local communities where the materials come from,” it was only a matter of time that they joined hands to come up with a sparkling surprise. A former catwalk model, Vania studied at the Gemmological Institute of America after which she honed her skills by working for luxury jewellers De Beers and Graff. She accrued industry expertise at Sotheby’s Jewelry Department before launching her own line, VanLeles Diamonds, in 2011. “In some ways it has been hard for me to break into the high jewelry world, as I did not have any previous connections. But the journey has, so far, been a really exciting one and I’ve found people have been very supportive of me,” says Vania, who works out of her atelier on New Bond Street in London. During her research, the designer stumbled upon photographs of these women dressed in scalloped dresses. That’s how fashion came to play a key part in accentuating the silhouette. “I used elongated arches that echoed the shapes of the scalloped dresses, but incorporated them into modern pieces, inspired by the strength of the spirit of these remarkable women.” The design – rendered in round cabochons, faceted pear shapes, faceted round brilliant-cut emeralds and round diamonds – has a Goth accent to it. Vania has, for the first time, used blackened gold in her design to create the perfect backdrop that most complemented the emeralds. “I found that the emeralds really stood out if set in a soft blackened gold,” says the designer, whose fluid design has pear-shaped emeralds cascading down the form. Mussulo Collection She has crafted two more stunning exquisite sets, both of which romance her heritage and culture. For the Mussulo sapphire and diamond creations, Vania draws upon the namesake peninsula off Luanda, where she used to visit during holidays with her family. “We mainly travelled throughout Africa, exploring the continent and were exposed to 14 Upscale Living Magazine |

Issue 41 www.upscalelivingmag.com

its beauty, richness and strength. That’s why I have so many positive memories and feelings towards the continent and all that it has to offer.” Moreover, when possible, she sources her materials from Africa – it is, after all, the continent richest in natural resources and the perfect place to source magnificent gems for high jewelry. Zanzibar Collection Vania’s elegant Zanzibar collection is adorned with fine Paraibas that are evocative of lush blues and turquoise of the sea. The clever use of the gems from Brazil and Mozambique, varying in color tones, lends an ethereal look to the gorgeous pieces. “I always find that if you play with slightly different tones of the same stone, it gives the jewelry a feeling of life and depth. This was really important in these pieces, as they were inspired by nature which is never uniform.” Red, she divulges, is the gem color of choice for her forthcoming pieces. “It’s a surprise! But it will be bold and full of color.” Vania’s surprises are always precious. It’s guaranteed to be worth the wait.

Italy, a country full of rich history and beautiful people, a nation where getting lost in the wonder of beauty is expected. Whether traveling through the green pastures and hills of Tuscany or strolling along the cobblestone of a city with ancient ruins, there is much to see and experience. I’ve been offered many opportunities to travel to this glorious country, and I’ve truly enjoyed my many visits, however, my travel with Insight Vacation turned out to be truly unique, as it was an experience beyond anything I’ve ever imagined as the most unique and essential way to capture the true essence of every destination. Traveling to me means a new set of adventures, and visiting Europe and its endless ancient treasures is exciting. Joining ‘Ultimate Italy’ Luxury Gold Holiday by Insight Vacations was the perfect treat. In anticipation of the trip I was packed two weeks early and ready to take on the world! My day of departure arrived and I was whisked off to the airport without any issues; again, my arrival at Rome’s Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport was also without any challenges, on the contrary, I had a representative of Insight Vacations meet me at the baggage claim, and after all was set and luggage retrieved, we drove directly to my hotel. Throughout the drive, I was able to capture the core of the city, you can see people from all nationalities walking around admiring the many fountains, grand churches and old monuments, all a truly fascinating sight. “And here we are”, said the driver bringing me back from my wondrous daydreaming. Right in front of me stood the elegant Five-Star Hotel, The Regina Hotel Baglioni Rome, situated on the legendary Via Veneto. I walked towards its entrance and a well-dressed doorman greeted me and opened the door to a beautiful decorated lobby with sophisticated elegance. The space is complete with black and gold marble flooring, a big statue of Neptune, the Roman God of the Sea was placed near the wrought-iron staircase, (Continues on the next page) 41 Upscale Living Magazine |

with original furnishings and Murano chandeliers throughout. “Wow” I thought to myself “This is the beginning of an enchanting vacation”. Meeting the small group of travelers was just as fantastic! Everyone coming from every part of the country, sharing laughs, travel stories and excitement about what waited for us on this trip. Some of them were on their 3rd and 4th trips with Insight Vacation and share with us their most unique experiences wherever they’ve traveled to with the company. “I must have chosen right” I thought to myself and that was indeed a true statement as Insight Vacations, the leader in premium and luxury escorted journeys made sure that our experience was not only fabulous but unforgettable! Our first day in Rome started with an ultimate VIP Experience! We enter the Sistine Chapel for a private tour with local experts, where we enjoyed taking in the magnificent of its ceiling painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512. Then we were taken with a fast tracked entry into the Vatican Museum ensuring maximum enjoyment of the priceless Papal art collection. Afterwards, we headed to the Colosseum, another ancient building that fascinates me! No matter how many times I’ve visited this place, I feel I see and learn new things. Later on that day, once we returned to the hotel, a group of us got together and decided to wonder off through the city, taking in the Spanish Steps, the shops on the Via Condotti, Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon, always making short stops for a nice glass of Italian wine. The perfect first day in Rome! On the 3rd day, it was time to head to Perugia, Tuscany with the Insight Motorcoach, and I mean this was not any bus! With comfortable seats, computer controlled temperature and air-conditioning, and don’t forget the complimentary Wi-Fi, this European motorcoach was luxury on four wheels! But it did not end there, our much beloved Daniele Nanneti, a wonderful and charming travelling concierge joined us from day one, making sure our trip was just as perfect as planned. Daniele was full of captivating stories; his knowledge of the country was absolutely astounding, and he was always ready to answer every question we asked (Continues on the next page) 43 Upscale Living Magazine |

in a friendly and graciously manner, while also sharing with us formidable experiences and many jokes! Also on this trip, I was able to meet John Boulding, the CEO of Insight Vacations, a very tall, elegant and friendly man who was also making sure everyone was pleased with everything and their smallest of requests were being met. I was truly impressed by John, as it’s not every day you have the opportunity to meet and share time with the CEO of such a successful company; again a pleasant surprise as not only was I able to see the man behind the brand, but learned his passion for the business and his devotion at meeting and exceeding every single one of his customer’s needs. I felt the more days passed, the more comfortable and happier I got knowing Insight Vacation was definitely a good choice of travel. Next stop was Villa Le Maschere Hotel, a 5-star luxury resort set in the Tuscan hills of Mugello near Florence, and one of the most gorgeous late Renaissance country homes in Tuscany. I loved wandering around the villa and capturing all its magnificent views, from its ochre, tan and lilac facade, to its beautiful fountains and gardens. Exceptional décor throughout, my room again was as much ample as it was beautiful with big windows overlooking the beautiful gardens and its grandiose pool. The villa also has a 44-acre park where you can enjoy natures beauty, everywhere you turned was majestic! That night, we all enjoyed a delicious and authentic Tuscan dinner. This is the perfect place to relax and enjoy. The next day I was looking forward to our next adventures. We all got into the motorcoach and ready to embark in another luxurious experience! We traveled on to Calcata, a striking cliff side village which has become home to a community of artists. We were able to wonder through the small village and admire some of their arts as well as the medieval surrounds. After a while, we continue north to Perugia where a local expert met us along the Corso Vannuci to the main square. We visited a workshop to see how the art of hand-weaving textiles has been passed down through generations. Marta, one of the owners was lovely, she shared with us the Umbria weaving tradition and offered a fascinating experience, after listening to her and sampling some of the machines, I walked away with a great appreciation for the artistry and passion that she demonstrated. After this, we peruse through the city, had a lovely lunch and journey on through the Chianti hills for a delicious exploration of the regional wines with a lovely Tuscan dinner, oh but not before I tried a delicious bowl of gelato. I was beginning to feel that I never wanted to leave this place! Lovely views everywhere you turned, outstanding attention to detail, in general, it felt I was in a dream that I didn’t want to wake up from; The next day was just as promising as every day has been since I arrived. I had a lovely breakfast and boarded the motorcoach heading now to Florence where Insight Vacation had arranged a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all of us! able to enjoy a private viewing of the Vasari Corridor, the kilometer-long passage spanning the Ponte Vecchio and housing portraits of famous artists, and afterwards we met with an art historian for an insider’s guide to Florence. We strolled to the cathedral. “Gates of Paradise” an open-air gallery in Signoria Square before admiring Michelangelo’s original statue of David in the Accademia Museum. I couldn’t help myself but my camera seemed to be on a click mode, everything I saw, I took a photo of! Later that day, we headed to dine at Barberino de Mugello, a family run restaurant where “nonna” makes the most delicious desserts! And I can definitely vouch for that! Our stay in Tuscany was abundant and exciting. We even had the opportunity to experience the flavors of Italian cooking with hands-on culinary master class at Villa Dianella, and I must admit that I was pleasantly surprise I did quite well cooking part of the meal we all enjoyed that day. Now it was time to say goodbye to Tuscany and head to Venice, and as I’ve never visited Venice, I was excited and looking forward to what awaited us ahead. While driving towards the floating city, we all avidly talk and shared our experiences, we tasted delicious treats that Daniele always had ready for us, a tremendous “touch of class” and always going the extra mile to make our voyage a unique experience. Italian music played at times, bringing us to many laughs and some even joined the music! You can feel the harmony amongst all of us. What an exciting time! Before arriving in Venice, we went across the fertile Po Valley to Verona, home of Shakespeare. We strolled past the well preserved Roman Arena and through a maze of elegant 47 Upscale Living Magazine |

squares to stand beneath the balcony said to have belonged to the Capulet family. The place was full of people taking photos and posing as Romeo and Juliet. We kept walking through the beautiful cobblestones and for lunch, a few of us settled in for delicious pizza and local beer. “Ready to head down to Venice?” Someone said, “Let’s go!” We all responded and headed towards our final destination. What a majestic sight! Venice is unlike any other town. No matter how many times you’ve seen it in movies, but the real thing is more like an unbelievable dream, something that

you’ve never imagined. We rapidly boarded the boat that took us to the Bauer Palazzo Hotel, another incredible hotel chosen by Insight Vacation, tastefully refurbished featuring beautiful chandeliers, fine Art Deco furniture and modern sculptures and a magnificent terrace overlooking the Grand Canal. The perfect hotel in every sense. As this was the last city we were going to visit on this trip, we decided to really take the spectacular views and places the city offered. Getting lost in Piazza San Marco early afternoon was fabulous! With (Continues on the next page)

Venice is unlike any other town.” many small restaurants surrounding the Piazza, I decided to have a small meal at Quadri, highly recommended by our concierge as one of the finest restaurants in Venice, which I enjoyed very much. Later that evening, our Insight Vacation guide took us on a traditional gondola for a serenade through the romantic canals. The next days were full of excitement and happy surprises. Insight Vacation was always on top of things meeting and exceeding each one of our expectations, almost nothing was too small or too big of a request. We visited and enjoyed St. Mark’s Basilica, and the lavish pink marbled Doge’s Palace, with its Bridge of Sights. We also had the opportunity to witness the age-old skill of glassblowers at an arts center and cruised to the idyllic fisherman’s island of Burano, a photo-lover’s paradise that shows brightly-painted buildings and flowerpots, where we enjoyed a celebratory dinner before our departure the next day. Now back home, I am still dreaming of “Ultimate Italy” with Insight Vacation. It was beyond fascinating, an experience that you will only attain with Insight Vacation. During my years traveling throughout the World, I have never encountered such a unique and exceptional way to travel, and I would welcome the opportunity to travel again with them, as a matter of fact, I am ready for my next “Exceptional Traveling Experience” and you should too. With Insight Vacations, one can truly appreciate the beauty of travel. 49 Upscale Living Magazine |

THE VELONIA BICYCLES - The Velonia Bicycles commuter gets lighter & sharper with new Lamborghini-inspired Viks GT. All Viks bikes are handcrafted in all its Viksfactory upon your exact request and have a unique serial number. Viks is entirely made from highest quality stainless steel (30×1.0mm tubes and 1.5mm U joints are used). All the crowns, dropouts and weldments are made from the same grade of steel. The design is highly exclusive for Viks as there is no seat tube – two identically shaped tube frames run alongside the entire frame, joined at the head tube, seat tube and bottom bracket. This is why there are no issues with the strength. The fork and handlebars are all in one piece as well, making the Viks look extremely sleek and flowy from every point of view. The ride doesn’t feel any different from a “normal” bicycle as the frame doesn’t flex from missing the seat tube at all. Stainless steel is used purely for the corrosion reasons and for the option of leaving the frame unpainted and having a polished or brushed look. Viks has been kept simple – bottom bracket, seatpost, wheels and headset are all in common sizes and available in most of the bike shops around the world. So there is no problem getting replacement parts or built your own dream bike on Viks frameset.

GREECE

GREECE

One of the Most beautiful Countries | By Alina Rosa Leyva

My first visit to Greece was as fascinating as the country itself. We look at photos, and envision ourselves being there, enjoying the many breathtaking views; from picturesque white houses on a hill in Santorini, to magnificent monuments and museums in Athens, to surrender oneself in its beautiful sunsets and overlooking the stunning blue waters of its seas. There is so much to see! The welcoming hospitality of its people, the culture, the cuisines, where does it end? Greece is truly a country of wonderland perfection and exemplary history; and as such, I’d love to take you with me, even if through my reading, on this fascinating journey that offered me impeccable and extraordinary experiences. I arrived late in the evening at Athens, travelers coming in and out of the country can be seen throughout the busy airport. “It’s almost midnight”, I said to myself amazed at how fast time has gone by, and although it was late and my body craved a warm shower and a comfortable bed to rest, my mind was going about 100 miles per hour, thinking about the adventures that await. “Finally in Greece!” I said to myself. I couldn’t believe it! After I picked up my luggage, I was met by Dimitri, our wonderful Greek guide who became a dear and funny friend to all of us; Dimitri and

Grigoria Kamaterou, the Director of the Greek National Tourism Organization, who was in charge of the trip, were all fabulous! Funny, knowledgeable and happy people who I am happy to call my friends. Along with the beautiful atmosphere, architecture and adventures, our guides helped tailor this trip into an experience that I will never forget. It’s morning time and I awoke ready for adventure. After a nice breakfast of Greek pastries, cold cuts, and an array of cheese, I met with our traveler friends who were also as eager to explore the capital city of Evia. With such a rich history dating back well over a decade, choosing our first stop was a hard task, however, we threw the dice and Karababa Castle was our first choice. Wonderful views of the straits of Euripos and the town of Chalkis can be seeing from this beautiful fortress, an impeccable sight to see. Built in 1684, and designed by the Venetian Gerolimo Galopo, one can embrace its treasurable history. As a matter of fact, inside the fortress is one of the best-kept secrets in Greece – one of the country’s best local museum, packed with well-described artefacts. Also within the fortress was a small church dated back to 1895, said to have been dedicated to the Prophetes Elias. Everywhere you turn had a story. After visiting the fortress,

we strolled through the streets and decided to stop at Xenia, a nice café not far from us, where we ordered cold drink and enjoyed a few laughs. Next day, our traveling group headed to Athens, the capital and largest city of Greece, and one of the world’s oldest metropolises. If you’ve never visited Athens, you will surely enjoy your stay; as you can notice all periods of Greek history throughout the city; from Ancient times and Roman occupation, to the Turks and Modern Greece, a true inspiration. We arrived at the Acropolis Museum, a truly world-class architectural gem; there I was able to see the stunning displays of over 4,000 statues and artifacts, and when you first enter the museum, you will be able to see, through the plexi-glass floor, the ruins of an ancient Athenian neighborhood, which were artfully incorporated into the museum design after being uncovered during excavation. After wondering through the exhibition halls, we walked over to the Parthenon, a historical landmark that can’t be missed. Words or pictures cannot describe the majestic Hellenic masterpiece. We all took plenty of photos and walked through the ruins. After a few hours, we decided to stop for a nice glass of wine and taste some of the Greek cuisine at Dionysos Zonars, an elegant restaurant offering the most spectacular view of the Acropolis. What a wonderful way to end our visit to Athens! Truly a place where the past meets the present and creates the future. For the next couple of days, we took in the many locales to dine, explore and even relax; heading for Mesohoria was a treat, where we visited the Purple Cave for diving, and later, lunched at the traditional tavern at Almiriki, a little restaurant by the sea where every dish brought to our table was excellent! the eggplant salad, the chicken, cheese, etc. delicious! A whimsical day spent with old and new friends, taking in the sunset, drinking and splurging in fine Greek cuisine. The next few days we all explore the vicinity towns and enjoyed every detail. We also had dinner with the Deputy Governors of the region who hosted us at Delfinia Restaurant, the best food in Stavros! Delicious traditional Greek dishes came to our table, fresh fish, lamb, goat and a variety of fresh vegetables and salads, a truly culinary treat with undeniable beautiful views. Early next morning we departed towards Northern Evian where we had the opportunity to meet with the Consul of Central Greece. There we 53 Upscale Living Magazine |

had coffee and some traditional sweets. We were also welcomed by the Mayor at the town of Edipsos, great Greek hospitality! Everyone was so welcoming and happy to share with us the beauty of their country. Now, it was time to head to Lihadonisia, The Maldives of Greece! Consisting of a group of islands that emerged after a big earthquake thousands of years ago, mythology has it that the islands were named after the servant of Hercules, a spectacular view! While there we stayed at the famous Hotel Spa Thermae Sylla, considered the first modern hotel in Aidipsos and frequented by the likes of Winston Churchill, Aristotle Onasis, Maria Callas and many others. I was delighted with my surroundings and thrilled to experience the splendor of such hotel. My room overlook the Eubean Gulf; beautiful décor adorned my spacious room, comfortable slippers & bath robes with luxury bath amenities, I was in for a wonderful gratifying time! After a nice cup of tea, I headed to the Thermal Spa for a little relaxation and rejuvenation. Faced with a list of spa treatments offered, I had a hard time deciding, however, I opted for the mud therapy bath. I lay down on a bed where the therapist massaged mud over my body until I was covered from head to toe, next I was wrapped in a warm blanket and given approximately 15 to 20 minutes to succumb into complete relaxation. It felt a little weird as I’ve never had this experience, especially when I tried to move my arms, which were tightly tucked in the blanket, but after a couple of deep breath, I relaxed and enjoyed the therapeutic treatment. With the mud bath treatment, I was also given a stress-free relaxing massage, and I was content to succumb once again to the comforting treatment. Oh this is Heaven! I remembered thinking. Afterwards, I headed for my third and last treatment of the day, the famous Cleopatra’s Bath, best described by the Spa director as “the ancient beauty secret recipe of Cleopatra for a rich and deep hydration, using luxury moisturizing creams enriched with aromatic essential oils from flowers and leaves to help the skin absorb in deep the humidity and the necessary nutritional ingredients. Immerse yourself in a special warm water bed and feel the absolute relaxation.” And that I did. Slathered in goat milk cream and wrapped up in a towel lined plastic blanket, was again a new experience for me, and shortly thereafter, I was instantly submerged into a thermal waterbed bath! The whole treatment was magical! My skin felt so soft, and the rest of the day I felt a sensation of pure blissful relaxation. When evening came, we met the Mayor of the town and had a succulent dinner filled with numerous Greek entrees, every single one totally delicious! Early the next morning, we departed for Port of Edispsos & Thermopylae, approximately an hour travel on the ferry. The day was sunny and warm as it has been since I arrived in Greece; and I enjoyed the views from the sea, taking in the beauty surrounding us. Next stop? Hotel Galini Wellness Spa nestled in a valley of eucalyptus trees, another splendid resort! There we were greeted by Mr. K. Bakoyiannis, Governor of Central Greece and Mr. N. Hardalias, General Secretary where we enjoyed a nice glass of wine and converse about our experiences from the places we’ve visited. This day was relaxing, at least for the next 5 or 6 hours, and as I enjoyed swimming in the thermal waters of our previous hotel, I figured I succumb my body to the same relaxation and healing treatment. After a few enjoyable hours at the pool, it was time to get ready and head over to the Atalanti Winery, internationally known for the Hatzimihali family wine label. We toured the vineyard, had a nice meal and even had the opportunity to mixed our own potions. The next few days were just as exciting as the days before. We visited the seaside spa town of Kamena Vourla where we enjoyed the majestic views of Mount Knimis before heading for the Mountain Region of Karpenisi. There we arrived at Hotel Spa Montana, which was to be our home for a couple of days. While in Karpenisi, we had the chance to visited the Monastery Prousou, only 31 kilometres south of Karpenisi and built inside a giant rock over a canyon, a truly impressive site. The monastery is dedicated to Panayia Proussiotissa (Virgin Mary of Proussos), whose memory is celebrated every August 23rd. This historical and religious monument 55 Upscale Living Magazine |

is today revered as one of the few still functioning monasteries in the area. After visiting yet another amazing site, we departed for traditional Greek Delicatessen “Stremmenou” known for their locally produced prosciutto, and we ate and ate! I remembered going to bed that night totally satisfied. And then, we are off to magical Delphi, one of the most important archaeological site in Greece, and second only to the Acropolis of Athens. Spectacularly built against the side of the Parnassus mountains, Delphi stands in all its glory. The ruins and their setting are spectacular; just imagine the wealth of architecture, oracle mystery and treasures while standing in the footsteps of Alexander the Great, the King of Argos and the likes was magical! You can see the temple of Apollo, the ancient theater, the stadium, the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia with the Tholos, the Kastalia spring, and the various treasuries that adorn the sacred way. I also visited the archaeological museum which contained many important ancient Greek artifacts from the many excavations at Delphi. I was totally impressed by these ruins and the rich history behind them. Definitely a must see while in Greece. The following day, we visited Sparta and the monument of the Great Leonidas king of Sparta, the hero of the Greco-Persian war who helped the Athenians defeat the Persians with only “300” men. As I had studied the Spartan history, to me being at this place was an incredible feeling and to stand just a few feet away from such an impressive statue. That night, after a long day visiting towns, we headed back to Hotel Spa Montana, had a nice dinner and turned in for the night as the next day was departure day. My experience through Greece was beyond exuberant! Everything was perfect, I truly enjoyed this beautiful country and I am ready to go back and recreate new memories once again! Are you ready for Greece? I sure am.

ROYAL CHUNDU Exalted Haven | By Heléne Ramackers

A

h, the power and privilege of Social Media. No longer do you have to visit your local library to dig up juicy titbits of information on your subject. You simply “stalk” them on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, which is exactly what I did a week before my trip to Royal Chundu. As luck would have it, I stumbled upon the pages of the very regal Tina Aponte, General Manager and Owner of Royal Chundu. Her affinity for the finer things in life is evident; she dotes on her two boys, two golden retrievers and delights in the odd G&T. I go in search of the perfect beverage to take along as a ‘thank you for hosting me’ gift. The question beckons - what do I buy to enthral a lady of such stature? Armed with a premium bottle of Gin, I set off for Zambia, hoping she will enjoy the contents as much as I thrived on purchasing it. A three hour flight takes me from Cape Town to Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport where the late afternoon is enveloped by a warm breeze. The airport is quiet and after a quick smile into the camera at passport control followed by a stamp and a ‘Welcome to Zambia’, I am met by my driver, Francis Chileka from Bushtracks. My journey to Royal Chundu takes me along Nakatinde Road and through Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park where we spot some warthog and impala. We drive past Simoonga Village where kids are playing soccer and people are going about their business selling charcoal along the roadside. The one hour drive to Royal Chundu is over in a flash and we arrive at the steel gates behind which I will be spending the next three nights and four days. The sun has set and the entrance to Royal Chundu Zambezi River Lodge is illuminated by beautiful beaded chandeliers. The magnificence that lies in front of me is jaw-dropping – the view over the pool onto the mighty Zambezi River is almost too much to bear. Fortunately my thoughts are disturbed by Hessah Silwebbe, who welcomes me and takes me to the jetty where I am transferred by boat to Island Lodge. I have been whisked through River Lodge and am now in transit to Island Lodge and in all of five minutes I have become so captivated by this place that I am tempted to ‘drop’ my passport into the Zambezi River. What a great tale that could become – a crocodile or hippo ate my passport?!

I’m jolted back to reality with our arrival at Island Lodge. Set on the pristine and private Katombora Island, these four glorious Villas bear testament to one man’s foresight – that of Hugh O’Mahoney. Like so many prior to him, after many a visit, he had simply relinquished his heart to Africa. His exploration of Africa took him to a game reserve in neighbouring Zimbabwe with subsequent trips to the Victoria Falls and the surrounding waterways. When he stumbled upon an old fishing camp with six self-built wooden huts located between two sets of rapids on the Zambezi River, he knew he had struck gold. Upstream, he discovered the unspoilt sandy-beached island of Katombora. His lifelong dream of establishing an exclusive luxury lodge was to be realised. In 2005, after the acquisition of the fishing camp and Katombora Island, the wheels were set in motion. Two years later, he demolished the old structures to make way for ten magnificently crafted stilted suites in the river and four larger villas on the island. Meticulously built, these

havens of luxury were completed in 2010. If ever I was fortuitous to be marooned, Island Lodge is undoubtedly the place to be. Twenty-five wooden lantern-lit steps lead you to the deck of Island Lodge. My habitation is Villa 1, aptly named Heron as these winged creatures frequent the waters of the Zambezi River. This is pure refined luxury on another level. Hessah shows me around my room, which comes complete with a lounge area, a bedroom with King sized bed, an oversized shower with his and hers showerheads and taps. The pièce de résistance is a free-standing bath on your outside wooden veranda. Dinner is served on the deck overlooking the crystal clear infinity pool. Reminiscent of a bygone era, Colonial charm is not lost on Royal Chundu as every meal comes complete with a silver service and at night, you dine while candelabra and lanterns light your way. The Zambian Tasting Menu is what awaits my palate tonight and I start with the refreshing Zambia pina colada, which is a baobab fruit cocktail. My starter is freshwater crayfish with bean velouté, followed by pan-fried Zambezi bream in an aniseed fish broth on a kapenta visashi. After a palate cleanser of ‘Ichisongole’ monkey orange sorbet, it is time for the Zambian bush feast – a delicious beef fillet with vinkubala crust served on creamed, horseradish pearl barley accompanied by braised oxtail tortellini, fried bondwe, sweet potato leaves, wild Zambian mushrooms and lusala. I conclude my meal with the very sweet Zambian banana split with village peanut ice cream. The ingredients for each meal are carefully sourced from within a four kilometre radius of the lodge, ensuring complete freshness, wonderful taste and community involvement. Food and beverage manager Sungani Phiri combines all the local produce to create the most delectable meals to feast on. Back at my room, a bubble bath has been prepared for my indulgence. I immerse myself and drift into the fantasy world that has been bestowed upon me at Royal Chundu. This is the place where fantasy has become reality; your wish is their command. My bed has been turned down and the cool white luxury linen awaits my slumber. The beautifully handcrafted headboard forms a canopy for the wooden beams that hold your mosquito net, safeguarding you against any unwanted winged companions. After a good night’s sleep, it is time for my morning beverage, which is served in the hatch of my room, another unique feature at Royal Chundu. No concern of answering the door in your sleep attire sans make-up. Breakfast is a veritable feast of the most delectable fruit, mouth-watering pastries and made-to-measure choices from the menu. For those who might have over-indulged on their tipple the night before, there is a fully fledged Bloody Mary selection to regain your composure. River Lodge will be my domicile for the remainder of my stay. The 61 Upscale Living Magazine |

well-maintained teak wooden decks link all the rooms to the more frequented area, which has a very large relaxation area, dining areas, a bar area, a pool overlooking the Zambezi River and a hammock suspended between two tree trunks. The more family-oriented River Lodge has all the conveniences of Island Lodge; the only missing ingredient is the bath on your veranda. Here you can relax by the pool or have a Spa treatment in your room or in the gazebo while your children go in pursuit of bugs and butterflies during their tailor-made Children’s Club outing. Stilt number 4 is where my bags get delivered and I quickly assess my schedule for the rest of the day. Today is canoeing day! My trepidation is evident and I’m hoping that my guide won’t sense my fear. I reluctantly lower myself into the canoe and as we set off, I glance backwards towards my guide, Kelvin, who is rowing like a pro. I pick up my paddle and realise I’m getting more water into the canoe and onto myself than I probably should. This is the Zambezi River, home to lots of wild and wonderful creatures and some heart-stopping rapids. My concerns are set aside when I ask Kelvin whether I might become crocodile brunch. ‘The crocodiles are vegetarians Ma’m’, he humorously assures me. Not far down the river, we encounter a family of five hippopotamus, which Kelvin steers clear from as these territorial animals are extremely dangerous. We approach the first set of rapids and I hold on for dear life. Fortunately my camera is safely stored in the dry box. Nothing earth shattering – just a mild splashing of water. The second set however has me completely soaked and exhilarated! We stop at Katombora Island for our picnic lunch, a feast that might have you taking a siesta on the Persian carpet or a snooze in the hammock. Think salads, sandwiches, kebabs, fried chicken, pizza, fruit and dessert. The fully stocked bar is filled with whatever drink tickles your fancy. You might not want to leave here – ever! After digesting our food, we go on an island walk where we are faced with the gigantic stature of a beautiful baobab tree. What an incredible sight. We meander our way on foot back to Island Lodge where we are met quayside by our guides, who transport us back to River Lodge in our canoes. I take refuge in my air conditioned room and emerge in time for the sunset cruise. We set sail and Kelvin points out the well camouflaged crocodile on the banks of the river, when suddenly he slithers back into the dark water. The unmistakable sound of an African Fish Eagle calling cuts through the dusky sky. We see him perched high in the tree tops. He ‘poses’ for a while before taking flight and his impressive 6 foot wingspan has everyone clamouring for their cameras and binoculars. The sun has begun to dip behind the horizon and the clouds are painted a beautiful golden hue. My dinner tonight is served in the wine cellar, where wines from all over the world can be paired with your meal of choice. I opt for the

aged beef with hollandaise sauce, grilled to perfection and concluded with a chocolate fondant. Before retiring for the night, I take a shower and am suitably impressed with the generously sized bottles of The Victorian Garden African Indulgence Collection seaweed and cypress shower gel, basil and rooibos shampoo and argan and vanilla hair conditioner. Refreshed, I lather some macadamia and marula ultra rich body lotion onto my sun kissed skin. Sunrise the next morning is a sight to behold – golden rays light up the early morning sky. Breakfast is served on the deck and I order the perfectly prepared flapjacks with cinnamon sugar. A visit to the Royal Chundu Foundation School is scheduled for the morning and after an easy walk, I am met by headmistress Luckie Siamoonga, who together with other teachers lovingly take care of 55 children, between the ages of four and six years old. Another great initiative spearheaded by Tina, who realised that building a school for her staff’s children will go a long way in securing their futures. I combine my sunset cruise with a birding safari and Fred describes every bird we see along the way in great detail – from the black winged stilt, the African Skimmer, the African open bill, the Squacco heron and the Bee eater. We take in the rare sighting of a breeding pair of African Fish Eagles. Back at River Lodge, we gather in the Boma for the traditional dances and drumming displayed by Zambian dancers. It is time for the Cultural Ala Carte Menu. It starts off with a Chibwantu cocktail beautifully presented in a shell, followed by trio of fish with mundambi jelly. My main course is organic ‘village’ chicken ravioli with salad and dessert is sour milk cheesecake with musika jelly and tamarind ice cream. The next morning heralds the most magical sunrise. It is time for me to leave and as I say my goodbyes, I realise just like the sunrises and sunsets, here at Royal Chundu, this place is pure gold. Thank you to Marina Smithers-Carlaw for taking care of all my arrangements. A huge thank you to everyone at Royal Chundu for taking such great care of me. A special thank you to Tina Aponte for allowing me to share your incredible h(e)avenly piece of paradise with me. Views expressed are the author’s own. THORNYBUSH GAME RESERVE | By Heléne Ramackers

T

hornybush Game Reserve is the second oldest commercial Game Lodge in South Africa, with the first bricks being laid in 1961. It spans 14 000 hectares and its close proximity to the Greater Kruger National Park makes it the ideal venue for animal viewing. After a complete rebuild in 2001 and a name change to The Thornybush Collection, the lodge has become synonymous with luxury accommodation, great service and up-close Big 5 encounters. We arrive late in the afternoon, famished after our long journey. “We have kept lunch for you,” a friendly voice informs us. We are escorted down the wooden walkway towards the elevated lookout deck where our table is beautifully set up. After a quick and delicious lunch, we head out on our late afternoon / evening game drive. Our ranger Joe and tracker Orlando go in search of what animals they can locate for us. A shrub hare hops off into the twilight and with the onset of darkness, the only illumination is the light cast by the vehicle’s headlights. We enter a very dense area and Joe suddenly switches the Land Rover’s engine off. Orlando plugs the search light in and suddenly we hear a deep and primal snarl, followed by a skirmish and then we spot the rosettes. Can it be or are my eyes playing tricks on me? We wait fifteen minutes and there it is again – leopards mating! We leave the sighting to give them privacy and head back to camp.

Dinner is a delectable feast in the boma with a braai (barbeque) and all the trimmings. Meals have a distinct South African flavour and there will always be something traditional on the menu, whether it is Springbok shank or the ever popular Malva pudding for dessert. It is time for bed, but not before indulging in the opulence of our stunning suite. Upon entry, there is a lounge area where you can browse through the wonderful variety of magazines that have been put there for your reading pleasure. From the vantage point of your wooden deck, complete with your own plunge pool, you might find an animal browsing the leafy surrounds. The view from the bathroom is incomparable, with the outside shower being the perfect cooling off spot for the naturist in you. A very large bed draped in mosquito netting awaits your sleep and don’t be surprised when you are serenaded with some nocturnal animal sounds. Refreshed from a great night’s sleep, we embark on our morning game drive. The sun has risen over the airstrip and the animals are basking in the glow of the warmth and the promise of a new day. The leopards have probably taken a respite from their mating antics, I wonder out loud when a snarl penetrates the silence of the bush. We hear them, but cannot see them. Then he struts into view, tail erect, looking for his lady. She is taking a catnap. He does the same. We wait in antici64 Upscale Living Magazine | Issue 41 www.upscalelivingmag.com

pation. She gets up, strolls over, parades herself in front of him, willing him to mate with her again. He obliges unwillingly and she gives him a good smack across the nose. This ‘honeymoon’ phase lasts between three and five days with mating occurring every fifteen minutes. These solitary animals will then go their separate ways and if conception has occurred, the female will raise her litter on her own. A delicious breakfast follows our incredible sighting after which we retire to our posh accommodation. Lunch consists of mouth-watering chicken pie, an array of salads, home baked bread, scrumptious pasta and sticky finger-licking ribs. Our early evening game drive takes us to another part of the reserve. With its sheer size, you are spoilt for choice in which direction to venture. We pass by a herd of buffalo grazing and the light is starting to fade. Joe is driving up the embankment and pauses for a moment, consulting with Orlando who seems very interested in the tracks he has found on the ground. The tracks reach a dead end and as we look up, we see them – two lionesses and three cubs. The cubs are playing on the dry riverbed and the lactating female rolls over on her back to allow the cubs to nurse. After their fill, they carry on playing and the curious one of the three comes to within four metres of the vehicle. Joe joins us for dinner, regaling us with tales of his time as a ranger. Sleep beckons and my dreams are startled by the sound of a lion calling. The following morning, we set off in pursuit of the lion. I ask if we could perhaps find the cubs as it would be wonderful to see them in the daytime. With about five different ranger and tracker teams trying to locate them, we eventually give up as Joe explains that she is probably on the run. The lion was calling for her and she would do anything to keep her cubs safe from a suitor who would either love them or kill them. She wasn’t going to take that chance. Driving back to camp, we spot the ever graceful giraffe, three of them expecting babies. We leave hoping that all the babies at Thornybush Game Lodge will stay safe from harm. http://www.thornybush.co.za/ lodges/thornybush-game-lodge NOTE: Thank you to The Thornybush Collection for making our stay possible. STRATAJET

Exploring the many facets of ground-breaking Stratajet | By Doug Singer

The “empty leg” business model is one that is flawed at best. It is often very challenging to find a flight specific to your journey in terms of the locations in which you want to depart and arrive, and more specifically, the times you wish to take-off and land. Enter Stratajet. Dubbed ‘the world’s most sophisticated comparison site,’ it is the first and only software that allows you to search for, compare and book private jets online within seconds. Founder and CEO Jonny Nicol (a former British Armed Forces officer and pilot) spent over four and a half years of tireless dedication developing a new technology that is quite simply turning the industry on its ear. Stratajet is the world’s first real-time private jet booking platform using the power of technology to give its passengers total control and freedom. Having just added the US as their 43rd country since their April 2016 launch, they are quite simply on fire. Stratajet has developed an ‘adaptive empty leg’ solution. This approach quite simply diverts the aircraft to suit your schedule, reducing the cost of your private jet charter by up to 75% and maximizing efficiency by minimizing waste of time and fuel. A number of online brokers have been trying to sell passenger-less flights by posting all empty legs in the hope that people will find the one that they want. However, Nicol believes this breaks a key principle of private aviation; that the aircraft needs to work around the individual, not the other way around. “Private aviation gives you a huge amount of flexibility,” he explains. “It enables you to take a lot of stress out of traveling and everything happens on your terms. But as soon as you’re told ‘you have to fly from this airfield at a certain time,’ you’ve got to adapt everything to the aircraft.” With a system so intelligent that it can search in real-time, every available flight for any journey, Stratajet has the capability to solve the industry’s problem that 40% of private jet flights currently fly with no passengers. By including existing empty legs in its search, and adapting these to suit the passenger, the cost of private jet travel can be reduced, whilst providing operators with a higher profit margin and travelers with the flexibility they so desire. “We know that the aircraft is going to cost the operator a certain amount to fly empty,” says Nicol, “but if somebody wants to fly a similar route, our technology also allows us to redirect a plane. Constantly working around your needs, it can even find the nearest, most convenient airfield for you and redirect the plane there. For the first time

people can see in real-time what private jet is available and what it’s going to cost them.” To explore the attributes of Stratajet, on a gorgeous fall morning I departed Manhattan at 8:00 a.m. for Teterboro Airport. I was immediately greeted and escorted with absolutely no stops, hassles, or lines onto the Gulfstream IV, “my jet” for this journey. A mere 39 minutes and a glass of Champagne later, I touched down on Martha’s Vineyard for a day of relaxation. We were greeted by the team from ‘Farm. Field. Sea.’ and transported to the lovely fishing village of Menemsha. Here we lounged seaside and enjoyed some local cheeses and cider while being edified by island oyster farmers, fishmongers and aquaculture experts during an intimate conversation about the seafood native to Martha’s Vineyard. Here we explored how these industries have created new opportunities for the island’s fisherman, and the incredible service oysters do to clean our waters for future generations to enjoy. Taste-testing island oysters, clams and other local seafood delights are a part of the fun provided by ‘Farm. Field. Sea,’ as is learning to shuck oysters just like the locals. Next it was off the Beach Plum Inn where we gathered around with a glass of wine as we learned the secrets of open fire cooking with our Chef, Jacqueline Foster. The menu included an array of foods all locally sourced, from an island-inspired paella, local vegetables, shellfish, handmade bread and more— all of which were cooked on an open fire. We then gathered around a communal table, basking in the flavors, the smells and the sounds of our private island asado, enjoying the panoramic views of the ocean and Menemsha Village below and feasting on the vibrant flavors of the season. After a hearty lunch that would satisfy even the most stringent of epicurean palates, it was off to Lucy Vincent Beach for a late afternoon stroll. In my opinion this is one of the most beautiful beaches adjacent to the East Coast of the US and gazing at the beautiful, large boulders as the sun settled into late afternoon was quite a memorable scene. Satisfied from an amazing afternoon of relaxation and convening with nature, it was time to head back to Martha’s Vineyard Airport. After an “almost too quick” flight, while enjoying a late afternoon cocktail, I was whisked back into Manhattan in time for dinner with my family. A good day indeed and one that truly articulated what can be enjoyed while having the type of freedom that Stratajet affords. www.stratajet.com 68 Upscale Living Magazine | Issue 41 www.upscalelivingmag.com

THE NEW WAVE OF CRUISE TRAVEL Escape on the Waves | By Ava Roxanne Stritt When I set off on the ocean on a great Princess Cruise ship, I had no idea I would return a truly renewed woman: healed, healthy and stronger than before. I should have anticipated something big, what with the hashtag #comebacknew the cornerstone of Princess Cruise’s social promotion. What I didn’t realize was that what Princess hashtags, Princess means. The cruise ship scene has evolved, and this higher-level of traveling seamlessly brings together adventure, luxury and wellness. And Princess Cruise is leading the way on this new wave of cruise travel that is tapping into a more discerning travel market. Forget what you think you know about cruise ships: lengthy lines for a subpar buffet, crowded decks and pools, loud and unruly children. Make way for true serenity at sea. When I departed on a Princess cruise, I had been suffering with a painful shoulder tear. One year of numerous doctors’ appointments and failed treatments had left only one option left: surgery. What I hadn’t tried, however, was alternative medicine. As part of the Princess Cruise offerings, I made sure to visit the spa — an essential, not optional, component for a proper rejuvenating vacation — and was pleased to see some unique offerings on the menu. I didn’t expect them to have a life-changing impact on my injury, but I hoped they might relieve some of the discomfort. First, I enjoyed a unique Thai Poultice Massage by a highly skilled therapist named Lindy. The poultice was filled with herbs, such as tamarind, lemongrass and patchouli. The on-board Lotus Spa offers discounts and incentives, the more services you book, which makes it easier to make a full day out of the spa with treatments that rival many esteemed European spas. Then, my shoulder was treated with acupuncture by the ship’s Australian-Chinese medicine doctor, Gerry Brumm. When I left the spa, I was amazed. My shoulder was nearly 100 percent better. There was no way surgery would be needed. If I hadn’t taken the Princess cruise, and if Princess hadn’t made it so easy for me to access these services, I would have never tried the combo of these two therapies, and right now, I’d be typing this with an unnecessary gash in my body — one that would require physical therapy and may cause problems, due to scar tissue, for years, if not for the rest of my life. Instead, I’m almost as good as new. I set off expecting a fun vacation. I quickly discovered a sanctuary at sea. And I left a new person, stronger than before I left. Princess’s royal treatment on the water was a game-changer — for my life, and also for the rest of the travel industry.

Crazy-busy seems to be the status quo for many people these days, making it more important than ever to carve out some time for a timeout. Consider a Princess cruise for your next wellness vacation and experience firsthand how the cruise ship industry has been leveled-up. Beyond the spa treatments and acupuncture, here are some other ways that Princess Cruise brings zen to the ocean: No need to plan. One of the most exhausting parts of a vacation can be the planning before you leave (and while you’re there): trying to find the best restaurants, activities, relaxation nooks. Princess has vetted through the options for you and offers the best of the best. Instead of prepping, follow your whim and desires, day by day. If you want to go wine-tasting, there’s an option for that. If you wake up another day and you want a facial, or to go gambling, or to experience food-tasting, sign up on the spot. Even if you arrive with a bucket list, expect to toss it out. Adventure awaits. Get a new perspective. There are plenty of ways to expand your brain and perspective while on Princess Cruise. A memorable option is to visit “The Bridge,” where the captain’s chair sits. From here, you can get a unique, expansive view of the waters — and if you’re lucky, you might get to sit in the captain’s chair and sport the special cap. Rest up. The Princess Cruise rooms are brilliantly arranged with a smart space for everything. The centerpiece of the room is the bed, developed by board-certified sleep expert Michael Breus and HGTV designer Candice Olson. The cozy cloud-like bed with luxe bedding makes it easy to fall asleep — and OK, maybe take a nap later, too. Pack your Karen Neuburger loungewear for ultimate comfort; they’re my travel go-tos. Entertain and enrich your life. The cruise offers an impressive list of demos and events to keep you entertained, but my favorite features were the cooking demonstrations by guest celebrity chefs, Ted Hopson and Joel Miller. They offered useful tips to bring home and incorporate into your own kitchen. The host: Love Boat star Jill Whelan, who played Captain Stubing’s daughter Vicki on “The Love Boat,” but of course. How fitting that she’s an ambassador for Princess Cruise. Get away and find some peace. When you think of a cruise ship, you might not immediately think about quietude and Zen, but the Sanctuary is where I found peace abounding. This adult-only, spa-inspired, luxurious top deck retreat features plush furniture, great service, chill music and healthy food and drinks, such as smoothies and spa water. 

CHEF BEE | By Alina Rosa Leyva

P

iyarat Potha Arreeratn, known to most simply as Chef Bee, was born in the small town of Ban Sankhohiang, located in the Chiang Rai province in Northern Thailand, bordering Laos and Myanmar. Born to farmers, he developed an appreciation for culinary arts early on from his mother who taught him about growing his own food, the different techniques of preserving and preparing food, as well as the vast array of flavors within the Northern Thai culture. Chef Bee spent his childhood summers at his grandparents’ home in the nearby village of Ban San Macade where under his entrepreneurial grandmother’s guidance he learned the art of making Thai street food that she traded and sold at the local village market. At the age of 18, Chef Bee came to America to study at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. After UCF, Chef Bee moved to Miami where he pursued his passion for cooking. He worked at several Miami area restaurants before landing a sushi chef position at Nobu in Miami Beach. While training under the tutelage of some of the country’s finest chefs, Chef Bee learned what it took to run a kitchen and maintain the highest standards. Following Nobu, Chef Bee went on to work under Chef Kevin Cory at Siam River before opening his own restaurant, Oishi Thai, in 2005. Oishi, which means “delicious,” quickly became a favorite of diners and critics. Today, Chef Bee, in partnership with his mother, have opened a new Thai concept, NaiYaRa, in Miami Beach. The restaurant is located at 1854 Bay Road in Miami Beach’s locals-friendly neighborhood of Sunset Harbour. Chef Bee showcases an eclectic menu featuring Thai street fare and Japanese specialties for which he is known for at his much loved Oishi Thai in North Miami. Named after his daughter, “NaiYaRa” means friendly, honest and hardworking, which is exactly what guests find at the new eatery. “I’m excited and honored to work with my mother on NaiYaRa to bring some of my favorite childhood dishes from Thailand to the Sunset 72 Upscale Living Magazine |

Harbour neighborhood,” says Chef Bee. “It’s been such a delight working with her to develop a concept that traces back to my Thai roots. The artful design, authentic cuisine and prime Miami Beach location truly make NaiYaRa a memorable and authentic experience for locals and visitors.” Inspired by Bangkok’s street food scene and Old Siam, Chef Bee combines both new and old to create a warm, retro-contemporary space. NaiYaRa boasts an open dining room with elegant, tufted red leather banquettes along with tables made from reclaimed Indonesian teak wood. The space is sprinkled with vintage soda crates and repurposed traditional fishing baskets from Thailand, and illuminated by industrial and craft lighting. Walls are adorned with custom artwork by Daniel Fila (aka Krave) including vintage movie poster and vinyl album cover montage in the breezeway, handmade wheat pasted columns, elephant mural at the sushi bar, and fine art installation showcasing vintage memorabilia and The King of Thailand. In addition to the main dining room and sushi bar, there is a separate bar that was custom designed featuring uniquely shaped liquor boxes inspired by back street Thai watering holes, with LED lighting to match the mood of the restaurant. A hand painted sign that reads “Miami Siam” can also be found above with kitschy lighting. At the bar, guests can find inventive cocktails and fresh ingredients. In addition to a selection of wines and international and local brewed beers, NaiYaRa has an impressive sake menu featuring exclusive bottles and blends for sake enthusiasts along with approachable favorites.
