P R O F I L E Her big break came at sweet 16, when her father’s friend asked her to design his kitchen. “It was my first assignment and I haven’t looked back since. The passion grew stronger and the projects bigger!” Having achieved iconic status, Kelly’s contemporary stamp is emblazoned on numerous high-end properties, private jets and superyachts, along with countless commercial projects, worldwide. Constantly in demand, Kelly is currently working on around 50 international projects and, whenever she’s not donning her design hat, she’s working on product designs for her online store, writing books, or championing entrepreneurs and investing in innovative new businesses. She also recently collaborated with Lord Alan Sugar and has a plethora of projects in the pipeline. Design philosophy Famous for her taupe colour palette and minimalist taste, the internationally-acclaimed interior designer typically works with neutral colours, a trademark of her vintage-inspired “East-meets-West” style. “I like the palette’s simplicity. Not only is it easy to work with and pair different colours, textures and fabrics to, it also screams luxury. These tones complement any splashes of colour or excitement you want to add to the room.” Inspiration, inspiration, inspiration... Along with her home town, London, Kelly’s trips overseas always influence her work and have played a key part in her success.

at home in China. I love The Upper House hotel in Hong Kong and PuLi Hotel and Spa in Shanghai.” Closer to home, Kelly designed Barcelona’s ‘talk-ofthe-town’ boutique hotel Murmuri. “It was great! Working with the Majestic Group was incredible.” Life up in the air & on the ocean wave… With her relentless travels, does she have any travel tips? “Pack wisely, especially for a business trip, ignore any jet lag and stay in the time zone that you’re in. Read a great book, watch a good movie, use a good moisturiser and drink lots of water. Amazing food and great company help, too! That’s about all you need.” She has, however, had to overcome one of her travel bugbears… “Overpacking. I am the most organised person in the world but I have previously been guilty of overpacking. Now, I take my time when I pack, so I’m careful to take just what I need.” Kelly was also brought on board to design the new cruise ship for Celebrity Cruises. The brand new transformational Celebrity Edge will set a new standard on the market, thanks to its state-of-the-art and revolutionary design. “The concept of designing individual rooms on the sea was irresistible,” she explains. “We were inspired by the notion that it is possible to sail away from the demands of modern living and retreat to a breathtaking space with an endlessly-changing view. It was exciting to explore the precise balance between the excitement of travel and the comfort of a luxurious personal space.” Fit’n’Fab at 57

“Travelling brings me so much inspiration! I travel to such wonderful places through work and everywhere inspires me. I travel regularly to the Far East, America and Europe for work. I love the Eastern philosophy, sense of tranquillity, harmony and way of life. I also adore Europe. Places like Paris have such fantastic culture, people, food and sights… always inspiring. Among my favourite Parisian restaurants are Le Voltaire and the chic La Société. I also love Italy, particularly Positano, Capri and Florence.”

Stylish Kelly’s a firm believer that age doesn’t matter. “I’ve never thought about it. This is why I’ve always been honest about my age.” The flawless inspirational style icon never fails to look amazing, despite her fullon schedule. “My daughter has taught me how amazing an alkaline lifestyle is. Honestly Healthy recipes and daily exercise make the perfect duo for me. Also, Dr Joshi looks after me. As for skincare, I love Linda Meredith’s facials. Sleep and drinking loads of water are essential with my workload.”

New York is a regular stop on her hectic travel itinerary and one of her favourite destinations. Other recent business trips include travels to Mumbai and Moscow, a place that she loves and where her residential collaboration with YOO, in the city’s prestigious Golden Mile, has been heralded as one of the most exclusive addresses in the world.

Striking a life/work balance is especially important to her. “I work out every morning… it helps set me up for the day. I work in a very focused way and when I finish, and at weekends, I relax and recharge my battery, unless filming. I’m lucky...a great team of people behind the scenes help me balance everything.”

One of the flame-haired Queen of Taupe’s latest projects, One Shenzhen Bay in China, is an extraordinary venture, on a scale never seen before. Taking timeless luxury to the highest level, it boasts her iconic design philosophy of sleek, crisp lines and a subtle fusion of Western and oriental details. Using inspiration from the most renowned metropolitan cities, the four show flats are themed on Hong Kong, New York, Paris and London. “Hong Kong is high up on my list of favourite places. It’s such a vibrant city and I feel very 16 Upscale Living Magazine |

Kelly, who is Hollywood actress Sienna Miller’s stepmother, says she always finds time for loved ones… “They’re the most important thing.” But her business is also very important to her, so is never far behind. “There’s a lot to do but I enjoy every bit of it and my family and amazing team’s support makes things a lot easier. I think it’s about working hard, putting all that you have into your projects 95% and making sure the 5% relaxing time is the most incredible holiday or time out!”

Work hard, play hard!

Home styling tips from the top!

When it’s time for that well-deserved R&R, South African-born Kelly hits the beach: “I have such a hectic schedule, so my downtime is very valuable to me to recharge. I like to spend time travelling and have visited many beautiful parts of the world. I love a beach and some real relaxation. I head to the LUX* Island Resorts in Mauritius (which I designed), Mykonos or Mallorca, which is lovely. I adore the island’s little shops, restaurants and people”.

In Kelly’s eyes, cramming a room full of different colours can overcrowd it. “A room is a beautiful thing, a space to make your own, and I feel that neutral colour palettes always complement best.”

She’s also a big fan of Ibiza, where she celebrated her 50th birthday in style, renting a villa for her family and friends, including a few famous faces. “I celebrated with all my loved ones. Great food... fantastic wine... even better company... I couldn’t have asked for more! There’s some truly beautiful scenery, especially in the north. I love La Paloma Italian restaurant… the food there is amazing. There’s also a place called Café B on Formentera, which is fantastic!”

JULY 2017 www.upscalelivingmag.com

According to Britain’s first lady of interior design, the most important element for transforming the ordinary into the show-stoppingly extraordinary is to go the extra mile. “It’s not always about designing the room to perfection, but looking at the project as a whole and how everything works together. The finishing touches; artwork… lighting… photographs… right down to the scent of the room, are vital. Art and personal stamp are key.” Getting the lighting right is crucial, she says, helping to set the tone. “More styles mean more mood choices, so always plan more than you need. Natural light is always best but isn’t always an option, so beautiful lamps and uplighters help bring a room to life.”

P R O F I L E

“Revamp. Give your home a second life with a lick of paint or shuffle around existing furniture. It’s possible to substitute expensive materials with more affordable ones which are just as sophisticated, and mix textures to result in a high-end look.” What should no home be without? “A dash of personality…your home is YOUR home and should fit your lifestyle like a great pair of jeans, so make it feel that way. No-one wants to live in a show home; fill it with photographs of loved ones and personal touches.” Life in The Den & gongs galore… Having clocked up four decades in the design industry, the interior goddess’s unique flair has won her numerous accolades, including the “Oscar” of the industry, the Andrew Martin Interior Designer of the Year award. She says her greatest achievement, however, was receiving her MBE for her services to interior design. “It was a huge honour to meet the Queen and be presented with such an award.”

As a former Dragons’ Den investor, does Kelly miss her time as a TV ‘Dragon’? “I loved filming Dragons’ Den! I’m really pleased with the investments that I made as they’re all doing really well.” She reveals the secret to her success is actually quite simple; “Hard work and passion. I love and am proud of what I do, so it’s easy to put all my efforts into it. I work equally hard on every assignment; they’re all so different and unique. When each is finished, I get a sense of immense pride.” Kelly says she has no career regrets. “I’m happy with how things have turned out. I’m very fortunate to have a great business doing something I love and any mistakes in the past have been nothing but a learning curve to get me to where I am now in my life!” There is plenty to look forward to from this inspirational interior designer in 2017. “I am working on many exciting projects around the world and can’t wait to share these with you. I have just celebrated 40 years in the industry and have never felt so in love with my job or excited about what is to come!”

Setting up a business? Kelly’s top tips… Her advice for entrepreneurs? “Do your research, know your market and your unique selling proposition and be credible. If you have a dream, chase it. Stick to your vision, be creatively inspired by everything around and follow your gut. Most importantly, have self-belief. If you don’t have faith in your project or yourself, how will anybody else? If you have confidence in your ability and designs, paired with determination, you’ll go far!”

Kelly designs her own range of luxury products for the home in collaboration with Resource Décor as well as her e-commerce range retailed on www.kellyhoppen.com. She is an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust, cultivating young talent and inspiring young people to pursue their business ideas, and also for the UK Government’s GREAT campaign, which showcases the very best Britain has to offer. Performance Check Mate

RIMAC’S CONCEPT ONE | By Darren Dobson “Ahh, military intelligence. The great oxymoron” Probably one of the oldest jokes in the book, and in this case said by Samuel L. Jackson’s character in the unthinkably memorable 2010 spy-thriller “Unthinkable”. That is the opening gambit here because I’m about to introduce another unthinkable oxymoron into the conversation: “Croatian high-performance electric cars”. No joke. Rimac is a Croatian auto manufacturer that is evolving into a nascent expert in the electric arena. On top of work with Aston Martin on electrification projects, more exciting is the debut of the 2018 Concept One sports car at 2017’s Geneva Motor Show. Rimac trumpets their cutting-edge techno machine as ‘the world’s first all-electric hypercar’. The automotive world is charged up with the surge of electric vehicles like the Bolt, Tesla Model 3, etc. so electric hypercars are seemingly DC in an AC auto world. The Concept One can be called a 24 Upscale Living Magazine | JULY 2017

hypercar just for the shockingly explosive power delivered with a 1224 horsepower (900 kW) engine, if one can call it that. That amount of energy propels the car to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.5 seconds, blowing the circuits off of the McLaren F1 supercar figure of 3.2 seconds. The Concept One tops out at 355 km/h (220 mph), besting the Jaguar XJ220 supercar. The all-electric range is an impressive 350 km (217 miles) with the battery capacity of 90 kWh. Ongoing enhancements in the powertrain, battery system and electronics allow Rimac to consistently improve performance. The 200 km/h mark is reached in 6 seconds and the 300 km/h flag falls in just 14 seconds. Rimac Automobili’s proprietary tech includes a Torque Vectoring System that is upgraded to keep the immense power in check. As many electric car owners know, you have 100% power at the drop of your right foot. Rimac’s all-wheel torque vectoring computes info at 100 times per second. That’s fast!

www.upscalelivingmag.com

Founder, and Guru CEO of Rimac, Mate Rimac said: “To refine the Concept One and to reach an even higher level of performance we have continuously worked to improve and refine every system in the car. Hundreds of upgrades to almost all vehicle systems were necessary to unleash the car’s full potential. Our goal remains to deliver ground-breaking technology demonstrated in our hypercars to likeminded individuals around the world while at the same time being a recognized partner to the global OEMs.” In the chess-like world of the automotive industry, Rimac Automobili is positively charged to become a good Mate for many global brands’ electric-car ambitions, including Aston Martin, Koenigsegg, Tajima and others. And with the Concept One, they are proving they’re not just pawns in the promising future of electric mobility. Expect to be fully charged on price, currently around USD $1,700,000. www.rimac-automobili.com

An Arresting Concept

70 Ways to Reflet

Boucheron updates the iconic Reflet. As part of the watch’s 70th birthday this year, the maison has brought out eight new straps in vibrant hues and pastel tones. Featuring sculptured gadroons around the dial and sapphire cabochon winding mechanism, the Reflet timepiece with its interchangeable straps and simple geometric lines continues to remain in style. As always, motifs capture the inspiration. As you blow gently on the glass case, the steam from your breath reveals – on top of the hands – a hologram of the Vendôme column: the first jeweler on Place Vendôme, founded in 1858 by Frédéric Boucheron, often seeks inspiration from its address – the prestigious square in Paris. The maison, known for its transformable creations, made an invisible clasp that was patented back in 1944. The Reflet, available in steel or yellow gold cases, can now be worn in many different ways with leather or fabric straps in a myriad of colors; both light and bright. The style suits both men and women and come in various sizes – small, medium and large. Now, with 70 ways to wear Reflet, which one will you choose? www. boucheron.com

This was designed, we’re told, for the free-spirited dynamic woman, who travels the world in search of exclusivity. No surprise then, that Avakian’s sophisticated measure of time, the Lady Concept collection, sparkles with elegance. Spurred by the success of its limited edition Concept One collection for men, the Genevabased brand has drawn upon the tonneau form for its newest line of ladies watches that was recently launched at Cannes. Avakian has pushed the creative boundaries by giving the humble rubber strap an ultra-glam makeover. The pearly mosaic textured rubber straps are an industry-first, no doubt. “We created several prototypes until we got the final result. The mosaic rubber bracelet was designed with the idea of recreating a scintillating effect synonymous with a stunning piece of high jewelry. It took highly qualified technicians several months to make,” says Haig Avakian, vice-president. The texture features nearly a hundred motifs in each square centimetre, while the rules of light refraction inform the placement of each small pixel like pattern on the rubber surface. Accented with brilliant-cut diamonds and precious gemstones, the Lady Concept series embodies Avakian’s watch love for colour. The timepiece is a radiant epitome of elegance that segues between the modern and the classic. The collection is available in alligator and rubber bracelet variations. www.avakian.com

Miniature Masterpiece

Undeniably, one of Geneva’s best-kept secrets, (probably not anymore!) DeLaneau narrates inspiring stories through its outstanding craftsmanship. In its newest offering, Scarlett, pointillisme d’email (pointillism in enamel) and silver cloisonné techniques meld together to draw us into a stunning world of miniature artwork. None of the previous jewelry watches has delved into a combination of both the techniques, since the brand was founded in 1949. This was a daring attempt; one that saw creativity blossom on the dial, yet again. The DeLaneau Scarlett, an ode to delicate artistry and tourbillon movement, takes its inspiration from the watchmaker’s previous works on impressionism and flower fields. Just like Monet’s paintings, the Scarlett’s exquisite dial takes you on a walk through a cheerful field that springs into a riot of colors. The flowerbed, composed of hundred of grains of different sizes, features a promenading lady standing in its midst. The dome shaped white gold case is adorned with 35 ruby baguettes and 283 diamonds, two cabochons and ruby-encrusted crown. The tourbillon movement is housed alongside 52 baguette-cut diamonds, while the alligator strap features a deployant buckle accented with 32 diamonds. The bejeweled Scarlett makes a truly unique impression. www.delaneau.com

Nude Is Trendy

This summer, Baume & Mercier’s Neo Nude straps of its highly popular Petite Promesse collection come with a playful and vibrant twist. A fresh nude-fluorescent pairing blooms with pops of color – yellow, pink and orange – as the double-wrap around leather strap daintily hugs the wrist. Against the skin, the nude straps create a tone-on-tone effect that is highlighted by contrasting zesty accents. The color strip along the edge adds a hint of drama, while the sparkling diamonds and mother-of-pearl dial add refined elegance to the Petite Promesse timepieces. Yellow is for freshness, pink is for love and orange is for energy. So, which summer nude do you promesse to wear? www. baume-et-mercier.com

Tiffany City Hardwear collection HARD TO IGNORE Tiffany & Co’s bold new collection, titled City Hardwear, is hard to ignore! A notable departure from the brand’s signature design aesthetics, the collection – inspired by a unisex bracelet from 1971 – evolved under its former design director Francesca Amfitheatrof and was reimagined to include rings, earrings, necklaces and pendants. Available in 18k yellow gold, with a few pieces in sterling silver versions such as the ball hook earrings and bracelet, the core collection draws its inspiration from the urban soul of the city and industrialism. City Hardwear is how the modern rebel gets to fuse high fashion with street style. This jewelry line serves its purpose: it makes hardwear look utilitarian. Besides, its trendier form – chunky link wrap-around bracelet, necklace and tiered earrings – is bound to woo the brand’s younger clients. The campaigns, featuring pop icon Lady Gaga in triple drop earrings, link chain necklace and bracelet, made us go ga-ga over Tiffany’s metal intensive designs. www.tiffany.com | By Smitha Sadanandan

Spring Into Couture

Moschino gives its now famous ‘cleaning spray’ bottle a cuter pink spin. The new avatar, Moschino Pink Fresh Couture eau de toilette, unleashes a floral scent by interpreting the original essence that is delightfully perfect for spring. The fragrance is a mix of citrus, floral and woody notes. Pink grapefruit, cassis and lily of the valley form the top note. Wild rose, pink jacinth and pomegranate create the floral heart of Moschino’s Pink Fresh Couture, and cedar wood, ambrox and musk leave a sensual base trail. www. moschino.com

ummery Aroma

The new edition of Valentino Uomo comes with a re-invigorated spin on the classic fragrance. Staying true to its original intense character, the Uomo Aqua now springs with an evolved attitude. Composed by Alexis Dadier and Sophie Labbe, the fragrance is a contemporary exploration of freshness and intensity. Think aromatic greens of an Italian garden laced with mandarin, citron and green tomato! White leather and iris meld to bring a disenchanted charm to the fragrance, which blends in clary sage essence and patchouli heart. Valentino Uomo Aqua comes in subtle sage in the iconic studded glass bottle. The fragrance is available as a 50ml and 75 ml Eau de Toilette. Befriend the Uomo Aqua this summer. www.valentino.com

Gem Inspired

Adding a new chapter to Bulgari’s creative heritage, Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier transcribed the Maison’s first collection of high perfumery for men in a radical palette. Inspired by colored gemstones, Bulgari Le Gemme is an olfactory tribute to Bulgari and its immense love of precious gems. Colored stones inspire the fragrances – Ambero, Onekh, Garanat, Gyan, Malakeos and Tygar – that pay homage to great conquerors, adventures, emblematic gems and talismans. Atelier Oï made the Le Gemme masculine collection bottles with its form evoking the obelisk, while recalling trophies and talismans described by Herodotus and Pliny. www.bulgari.com

Quintessentially Oriental

Contemporary perfumer Thierry Wasser, who became the new Guerlain nose in 2008, traverses the Oriental route to capture the essence of the Oriental fragrance – all the way from Oman to Vietnam, from India to Laos and Cambodia. The woody-leathery Oud Essentiel is a unisex perfume with accords of oud, dry amber, saffron, geranium, cedar, rose and leather. Evoking the design of Middle Eastern lattices, the fragrance is packaged in a green bottle featuring a luminous label, elegantly accented with a green and golden ribbon. Take a whiff of oud and join Guerlain on its Oriental journey. www. guerlain.com

Sunny Notes

Who doesn’t long for sunshine? Azzaro seems to have read our minds, just right. The Solarissimo saga, comprising a collection of three fragrances for men inspired by the sun, takes on a sunny note with the second creation, Azzaro Solarissimo Marettimo. Celebrating the Mediterranean Marettimo Island, in the Aegadian archipelago, and evoking a key moment of the day, this new eau de toilette wafts across as a nod to high noon. Accords of lemon, citron hesperidia notes, punctuated by aromatic mint tones lend freshness to the fragrance, while the base leaves a woody trail accented by notes of Atlas cedar. Capturing the essence of the sunny open sea, cool breeze, cloudless skyline, the design of Marettimo’s blue bottle adopts a monochrome of marine hues in layers of blue. Quentin Bisch is the nose behind Azzaro’s new fragrance. www.azzaro.com 43 Upscale Living Magazine |

KOBI KARP Designing Genius

JULY 2017 www.upscalelivingmag.com

P R O F I L E

H

aving garnered worldwide acclaim as a virtuous architect, Kobi Karp is paving the way in design with a conscience.

How did your journey as an architect begin? After earning degrees in Architecture and Environmental Design at the University of Minnesota’s Institute of Technology, I started my career working on hospitality projects and all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean and Miami Beach. I opened my firm in 1996 with a focus on hospitality, mixed-use commercial, residential and multi-family properties. What / who do you draw your inspiration from? The environment. Before I start a new project I always focus on the potential location of the property on the land itself and its relationship to local environment and physical nature. What are / have been your biggest challenges in your creative process? The biggest challenges in my creative process has been to gather the most relevant and proper data in order to come up with the most unique and creative solutions to each individual project. What inspires you to work on a specific project? The concept is what inspires me to work on any project. If the concept is good then everything else falls in line. What does your work process involve? I like to study the area, history and environment for each project to come up with a design unique to the location. Important lessons along the way? The most important lesson is that the only constant in our life is change. In architecture, technology has evolved drastically and dramatically over a short period of time; it’s changing the way we design and build real estate. The important thing is to remember that evolution, in business and in technology, is constant and should be embraced. The favorite part of your job? The favorite part of my job is getting to know, study, understand and be exposed to different cultures, lifestyles and environments. It is this background of the uniqueness and the freshness that makes my job great.

If you hadn’t become an architect, what would you have become? If I had not become an architect, I would have been doing something in the creative arts.

What do you think sets your designs apart? We are strongly focused on innovation and contextual consideration. Every design is inspired by the site’s history and context, and by the “urban fabric” that surrounds it in the form of the built and the natural environment.

What exciting projects are in the pipeline for the rest of 2017 and 2018? We are working on a number of exciting projects in the U.S. and abroad. In South Florida, some of our current projects include the Four Seasons Hotel & Private Residences in Fort Lauderdale; Collins Park Hotel, a project that will combine six buildings in Miami Beach that will be restored and turned into a hotel complex; and 3550 South Ocean, Palm Beach’s first luxury condo project in a decade, to name a few.

What is the best thing about being an architect? Creating something that reflects the community and the society of which we are a part of. I believe that as architects and artists, we are a reflection of our time and our society.

In El Paso, Texas, we are working on the renovation and restoration of the historic Hotel Paso Del Norte, which will pay homage to the hotel’s history and will give downtown El Paso a luxurious and iconic landmark.

What has been your favorite building to design? I know, it’s like asking who is your favorite child, but there must be a special one? I truly do not have a favorite building. My two favorite projects which are still ongoing and have been ongoing for decades and are still work in progress … are my two sons.

Abroad, I’m looking forward to the opening of Hodges Bay Resort & Spa in Antigua later this year. Hodges Bay features luxurious oceanfront homes, penthouses as well as villas, suites and hotel accommodations, innovative dining options, and expansive leisure facilities. This project was designed to immerse guests and residents in a world-class experience of luxury in an unspoiled paradise. For more information, visit www.kobikarp.com

Describe your designs in three words. Dynamic, personalized and unique. 48 Upscale Living Magazine |

GUILLERMO ZAPATA It’s a SUR Thing!

| By Angela Sara West

A

ngelina Jolie’s celebrated her birthday here and Miley Cyrus is a regular. It’s home to TV’s Vanderpump Rules and is the hottest place to be seen in LA. It’s the SUR Restaurant and Lounge. From dishwasher to kitchen king, the founder and owner of the award-winning West Hollywood hotspot, Guillermo Zapata, talks to Angela Sara West about his super-sexy eatery, the famous faces he has welcomed here, the secrets of SUR’s sensational success and working with Real Housewife, Lisa Vanderpump.

S

uave and sophisticated restaurateur/actor/model/entrepreneur Guillermo Zapata is a man of many talents… Leaving behind an acting career, family and friends, he certainly spiced up his life when he arrived in America from Argentina in 1992. The slick entrepreneur is now firmly established amongst Los Angeles’ elite. “I came with empty pockets and a head full of dreams. Even though my first job in America was as a dishwasher and I didn’t speak a word of English, I always had big dreams.” Having starred in TV programmes, numerous national commercials and several movies, including Land’s End, the suave restaurateur founded his world-renowned restaurant in 1997, investing in a small, discreet space on the ultra-cool corner of Melrose Avenue on one of LA’s most iconic streets, Robertson Boulevard. “The day I founded SUR was my big break,” he explains. Swanky SUR is phenomenally successful and renowned as the trendiest culinary spot and watering hole in West Hollywood. From its humble beginnings with only a handful of tables, after 20 years and four expansions, the exquisite eatery now comprises 10,000 square feet, encompassing a stunning dining area and lavish lounge, several full bars, a romantic outdoor patio plus a chic private dining room. Guillermo met his French wife, Nathalie, in his restaurant in 2001. She subsequently left her life in Paris to help her husband continue SUR’s success and is still very hands-on with the business. “We are a powerful team on many levels; as a couple, as a family and as business partners,” he explains. “We have our own jobs within the restaurant and have very different personalities, which helps us avoid stepping on each other’s toes. Nathalie mainly takes care of the human resources, finances and helps organize the special events during the day, while I run the show in the evening. We have the best of both worlds!” Enter Lisa Vanderpump… and her rules! In 2005, Guillermo partnered with two established restaurateurs from London, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, Lisa Vanderpump, and her husband, Ken Todd, who invested, expanded and optimised SUR’s potential, transforming it into an ultra-glamorous venue for an ultra-discerning clientele. The shrewd English business couple were instrumental in the hot restaurant’s rise to fame, lending a taste of the exotic with A-list appeal. Thanks to Lisa’s exceptional eye for elegant design and tasteful décor, accompanied by the addition of a luxurious lounge with lashings of Lisa’s signature style, seductive SUR became THE place to dine in West Hollywood practically overnight. The refurbishment saw SUR adorned with striking artefacts, beautiful antiques, long leather Chesterfields and industrial zinc tables. Exuding an exotic vibe, a giant statue of the Hindu goddess Shiva greets guests with a sense of zen, while candles, crisp white linen, classy chandeliers and Lisa’s must-have freshly-cut flowers offer an intimate touch. Punctuated with a pop of purple velvet and Lisa’s trademark pink, there’s a subtle punch of colour at every turn. How did the collaboration come about and what’s it like working with Lisa Vanderpump? “We immediately appreciated each other’s work ethic and it blossomed from there,” says Guillermo. “Lisa is a great friend and the best business partner we could ever dream of. She is smart, a perfectionist and has this incredible English humor that allows her say anything to anybody!” Suitably fitting, SUR stands for Sexy Unique Restaurant. “SUR is Spanish for ‘South’; it’s sexy, it’s warm, it’s inviting… and our venue

54 Upscale Living Magazine |

JULY 2017 www.upscalelivingmag.com

represents all of that. It’s such a unique place and, naturally, when my partners, Lisa and Ken, came into the picture, we started to call it our Sexy Unique Restaurant… and it stuck!” Along with revamping its look, Lisa’s TV appearances aided the alluring restaurant’s rise to fame. “Lisa and Ken are definitely a power couple. They helped transform a quiet West Hollywood secret into a beautifullydecorated venue that is cohesively decorated to represent our aesthetic. Lisa becoming a star on the popular Real Housewives series brought new and exciting guests to the restaurant, too.” Supplementing its occasional appearance on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, stylish SUR is the basis for the show’s spin-off, Lisa’s successful BRAVO TV reality show, Vanderpump Rules, which attracts fans from all over the world. Featuring Lisa in the title role, she’s seen (just about!) maintaining control over SUR’s wild’n’sexy staff. “Both Vanderpump Rules and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills are great advertisements for the restaurant but, ultimately, the success of SUR is due to the strong group of people who work there every day, with both passion and love. We are immensely proud of our staff; they are our SUR family,” Guillermo tells me. SUR for starters & tempting TV fame It seems all servers in LA (many of whom are wannabe actors, writers, singers and so on) seek a slice of ultra-sexy SUR on their resumé. Acting as an amazing career apéritif, SUR serves as an invaluable launchpad for many of its staff, who can be seen on screen cooking up a storm both on and off duty, making Vanderpump Rules a riveting watch. The current crew of servers and bartenders are TV gold, boasting big personalities prone to more tantrums and tiaras than you shake a pepper pot at! Wanting to whet our appetites with a flavour of the forthcoming tasty TV happenings at his desirable restaurant, I asked Guillermo to tease our taste buds and prepare our palettes for the next sizzling series - will it be as deliciously-drama-filled and as explosive as ever? “We’ve just started filming the sixth season. From what I’ve seen, it will definitely be a season you don’t want to miss. I can’t tell you everything that happens, but I can tell you that drama is inevitable!” “Seeing the cast members filming at SUR is an amazing treat for restaurant guests. If you keep your eye out and come on the right night, you might see Tom Sandoval bartending behind the bar or Scheana serving drinks.” A hip Hollywood hotspot From its cutting-edge cuisine and exciting ambiance to its delightful décor, Guillermo’s restaurant is a charming, eclectic establishment which attracts a very eclectic, multicultural, star-studded clientele. Tantalising SUR serves up an appetising concoction of cocktails and mouth-watering, international culinary delights infused with influences from Argentina, Mexico, France and Italy. “The chef has been with us for 20 years and we trust him to deliver over 500 dishes every evening. My personal favorites are the grilled salmon served with English peas and the low-carb chicken enchilada. You can enjoy a delicious meal at our dining side then walk next door to the lounge for dancing and cocktails, all in one night!” To top it all off, Guillermo’s delectable venue plays host to a medley of fine-dining fashionistas and famous faces, and has long been a haunt for the who’s who of Hollywood. Along with Angelina Jolie and Miley

P R O F I L E Cyrus, Madonna, Sylvester Stallone, Paula Abdul, La Toya Jackson and The Talk’s Sharon Osbourne are all fans. “Having the TV show has been great, but long before it even started, celebrities and industry elite would eat at SUR. I don’t like to name every one, but I can tell you that the first famous face to dine here was George Michael,” Guillermo reveals. “I organized his birthday party back in 1999. He was a true gentleman and a truly beautiful soul. It’s one of my fondest SUR memories and I miss him. Al Pacino is another of my favorite celebrities who has dined here.” Success secrets, served with passion & love… In recognition of all his hard work in creating his celeb hotspot, Guillermo was recently awarded a coveted Creative City Award (CCA) for Creative Business from the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. “It was an honor to receive the CCA award but, for me, the consideration and satisfaction of our clientele is the best award I will ever get.”

The Argentinian George Clooney lookalike has modelled for high-end brands, including Mercedes Benz. What’s his personal style? Does he go for the cool LA look? “Dressing up for work, in a commercial or to go to SUR, is like getting into a new character every time. I like to mix high and low-end brands together. You don’t have to spend lots of money to look put together and clean. At weekends, you can find me in my favorite denim jeans, a pair of Converse, a simple white t-shirt and a leather jacket. For nights at SUR, I like to mix it up. I can be in anything from a Patrick James blazer to a Etiqueta Negra jacket. In LA, it’s more about wearing your clothes with confidence and not allowing the clothes wear you.” Often on the road for his modelling work, Guillermo has many favorite destinations. “While that’s fun, I really enjoy traveling with my family. Beside visiting our respective families in Paris, France and Buenos Aires, Argentina, our favorite spots include Rome, Punta del Este and Formentera.”

Did Guillermo ever imagine he would end up owning a highly-successful restaurant like SUR? “Yes! I was determined to succeed, no matter what it took. I made great connections with a positive attitude and a smile on my face.” He says he owes much of his success to his father. “Passion drives me. I learned it from my father. With passion and love, you can reach the stars.” He has, however, faced many challenges in starting up and running his own restaurant and says it’s definitely not for everyone. “You need to be very detail oriented, very hands on and involved in every aspect of the restaurant. I’m there most nights, making sure that everything runs smoothly with our waiting staff and ensuring that each guest has the best SUR experience.” On the plus side, he says there are numerous rewarding aspects to life as a restaurateur. “It’s hard work, but fulfilling work. For me, customer satisfaction is always rewarding. You can’t put a price on a happy guest who continues to come back.” Guillermo’s ethos is consistency and focus. “No matter what you’re doing, you have to be focused, consistent and determined. I wake up early and never push off to tomorrow what I can accomplish today.” How has the restaurateur world changed over the last decade or so? “It’s very competitive and creative, especially in LA, which attracts tourists from all around the world. There’s always a new restaurant opening down the street, so it will never stop being competitive. In the age of Yelp and social media, it has never been more important for restaurants to provide the best service; from the food to the drinks and the environment, restaurateurs have to be involved in their restaurant’s day-to-day activities and you have to be aware of everything that happens inside and outside of the restaurant and, nowadays, also what happens online.” Does he think he has inspired his daughters to set up their own businesses? “Both of my girls, Loulou and Miarose, are very smart, and my wife and I will support whatever they choose to do, as long as they are passionate about it. We are here to give them lots of love and we try to live by example.” Big screen & modelling success Guillermo made his debut as a producer in 2013 with the short film Tango Amargo, in which he also played the lead. He recently returned to his acting and producing roots. “Acting is my first love and I am extremely happy that I can go back to it. I am working on a project which I hope to launch by the end of the year… stay tuned!”

JULY 2017 www.upscalelivingmag.com

With such a demanding work schedule, how does he keep fit and healthy and on top of his game? “Being healthy is a way of life. I just love it! I am a Taekwondo black belt, I box and play tennis weekly, and run daily.” Citing his motto, “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough,” the famous quote from Mae West, Guillermo says he has no regrets in life. For a taste of what’s to come, I ask how he sees SUR evolving. “I picture myself producing movies, but still running SUR for many years. I’ll keep dreaming big!” Is he now living the American dream? “I am the epitome of the American dream and I live my dreams every day. It’s always important to follow your dreams and I am proud that I did. I always encourage others to follow their passions with determination and focus. It took many, many years but my “American dream” came true!” 

The Pride of the Dominican Republic

RON BARCELÓ RUM | By Doug Singer

I

t was in 1929, when a young Spanishborn Julián Barceló arrived in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and founded Barceló & Co. After being in the family for many decades and mastered through sheer passion, it was Don Julián Barceló in 1974 who handed over the reins of the business to his nephew Miguel Barceló and 6 years later, in 1980, Ron Barceló Imperial was born. The leader in its class since the day it was launched and the most internationally awarded Dominican rum, Ron Barceló has become an icon. Now available in over 50 countries, Ron Barceló abides by the Dominican rum regulations—the first collective brand product in the Dominican Republic that ensures compliance with the designation of origin for rum. To comply with this standard, rum producers must harvest the sugar cane, ferment, distill and age the alcohol in oak barrels all within the Dominican Republic and by law, Dominican rum must be aged for at least 2 years. The results speak for itself. 58 Upscale Living Magazine |

Recently the team at Upscale Living had the opportunity to sample a few of these extremely fine products and the results were nothing short of spectacular. Ron Barceló Añejo - This, our first exploration, revealed a nice golden/orange color. Compelling aromas of candy and chocolate followed by a smooth silky entry to a semi-dry fruity body with great depth make this an absolutely fantastic rum for mixing. Although this is a solid staple for a plethora of rum-based drinks, try it in a Mojito, you will not be disappointed! Ron Barceló Gran Añejo - Matured naturally in oak barrels previously used for bourbon to yield a rum with an unmatched bouquet make this one of my favorite rums this year. Aromas of malt chocolate, vanilla, caramelized walnuts, tobacco and delicate anise smoothly followed by a semi dry body with hints of mocha and whipped cream make this an incredible choice for a spirited twist on an Old Fashioned. This is a versatile rum and is

JULY 2017 www.upscalelivingmag.com

one that quite simply is hard to misuse— simply delicious. Ron Barceló Imperial - Receiving the Gold in the category of ‘Old Aged’ at the Miami Rum Festival, this gem relies on the use of the purest water, aging in new American white oak barrels in ideal climatic conditions and 70 years of passion and experience in blending some of the finest rums in the world. Visually, the bright amber color is extremely compelling, but it is the aromas of buttercream, dried cherries and intense vanilla that compel you to dive in. Drink this one neat. All in all Ron Barceló is solidly keeping pace with the other two big names out of the Dominican Republic—Bermudez and Brugal. With that said, Ron Barceló will most certainly be the rum highlighted in my glass.

Hangawl RESTAURANT New York City, NY HanGawi was developed as a delicious means in which diners can learn how to eat a healthy diet and to vegetarians a complete vegetarian meal. Throughout Asia, there is a strong belief in harmony and balance embodied in the principles of yin and yang, or um and yang as it is known in Korean. Everything in nature is balanced by the opposing forces of yin and yang: moon and sun, man and women, fire and water. In order to achieve good health, the food you eat must also be a balance of these forces of um and yang. A healthy vegetarian diet should be a balance of um foods such as green vegetables and fruits, and yang foods such as roots, radishes, carrots, and potatoes. Taste the chilled pumpkin porridge silken tofu with sautĂŠed spicy kimchi or the Organic Zen Bibimbap, organic vegetables, mushrooms and mountain greens atop organic brown rice served with hot sauce, gluten free organic kale dumplings, organic kale and tofu dumplings wrapped in tofu skin. DUMATAU CAMP, LINYANTI, BOTSWANA

The iconic camp of DumaTau, situated on the banks of the Linyanti River in Northern Botswana is all about incredible architecture and sublime interiors. Located between two elephant corridors, your ultimate safari experience along the river and in the bush starts right here. When LIFE Interiors+Architecture+Creative Direction were briefed to build a 10-unit Luxury Camp, comprising of eight twins and two family units, they found the most exquisite site on the Linyanti River. It has direct access to the abundant elephant, hippo and other wildlife populating this pristine area, offering a very exclusive river and land experience in a sustainable manner. Even though ‘DumaTau’ means ‘roar of the lion’, elephant is king in this watery wonderland. The tranquil setting on the Linyanti River lends itself to incomparable interaction with both elephant and hippo in their natural riverine habitat. The focus of the architecture is on a dramatic sense of space, fused with human scale in tents manufactured of tensile fabrics with gum pole uprights, angled out-rigger arms encasing sheer, greige (not dyed or bleached) mesh walls and rope and leather detailing, allowing a transparency that blurs the exterior landscape and the interior volumes. http://www.wilderness-safaris.com/camps/dumatau-camp 69 Upscale Living Magazine |

The shy sitatunga regularly makes an appearance as this antelope loves the swamp-dwelling environment. Honeybadgers can be seen in broad daylight while hippo inhabit the deeper channels and lagoons. andBeyond Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp blends in seamlessly with the ever-changing environment and nine exclusive tented suites raised on wooden platforms sit tucked beneath a canopy of ebony trees. BUGATTI NINEITTE 66 | By Darren Dobson To some, who may think ‘Tom Lincoln’ is the greatest boat designer in the world, the name Palmer Johnson might not resonate. But for those ‘not living on an island’, it has been synonymous with great yacht building since 1918 when it was founded by Hans Johnson and Herman Gmack. Today Palmer Johnson is renowned as one of the world’s top premium yacht builders, whose commitment to performance and innovation is well noted. It is no wonder that a designer of such luxury performance would team with Bugatti Automobiles to create a boat for the discerning buyer. The result of this enviable teamwork: the Bugatti Niniette 66, first in a series of sport yachts ranging from 50 ft. to 80 ft. Now wait, Bugatti and boats? A little back story: In the 1930’s, Ettore Bugatti was busy building racing cars, racing airplanes [it never flew], and also motorised railcars. He also built boats, specializing in racing boats of course, one of which was a “oneof-a-kind” commissioned by Italian Prince Carlo Maurizio Ruspoli. Bugatti named it Niniette, the pet name of Lidia his youngest daughter. These combined pedigrees of performance and design allowed Bugatti and Palmer Johnson to join forces in designing an uncompromising sport yacht inspired by the King of Automobiles, the Bugatti Chiron. The limited-edition (66 to be built) Bugatti Niniette 66 will include the best of modern amenities available for a truly unique offering, rarely seen on the water. The vision of the Niniette dream was to be ‘ground breaking’. Combining Chiron’s signature engineering traits: an accentuated centre line, a sweeping signature curve, 72 Upscale Living Magazine |

and perfect symmetry along with Palmer Johnson innovations including advanced materials such as a carbon fibre incorporated in the hull. The result is an example of a no compromise, top quality construction and design. The DNA of the Niniette is pure Bugatti. The joint project hails back to 2015, when the two companies first discussed such a noble idea. When initial renderings of the concept were presented, a flurry of potential buyers said, “Yes please!” This included several Bugatti owners, eager to pair an exquisite water craft with their prized automobile, like trucks matching trailers and private jet interiors mirroring home décor. Bugatti owners wanted the final yacht to mimic their latest supercar, the Chiron. Designers and engineers went to work and succeeded, with the launching of the highly-anticipated Niniette 66. “The challenge was to create an experience and a persona as much as a yacht, from streamlined luxury, sophisticated style and unprecedented quality. For owners of tomorrow, Niniette will lift your expectations of life even higher,” explains Timur Mohamed, CEO of Palmer Johnson. The 20 metre (66 ft.) long yacht features Palmer Johnson’s slender hull design with two ‘sponsons’ left and right that have an innovative effect on stability with roll dampening even at high speeds. Carbon fibre construction adds structural rigidity, while reducing weight. “This construction also allows for a wider build compared to other yachts in this class, thus offering the experience of a much larger yacht,” adds Mohamed. Aesthetic design features include an expansive, open deck crafted with an authentic materiality afforded by

leather and naturally blue morta [bog-oak] wood. The lower part of the deck is home to a Jacuzzi, sun pad, and champagne bar. A unique ‘fire pit’, centrally located, lies between the Jacuzzi and the two forward seats. With ample room for entertaining twelve guests on the main deck, no one needs to be left out of the festivities. Inside, the salon of the Niniette is outfitted with the highest level of comfort and materials. Highlights include polished metal, carbon, leather, and marble, used in the furnishings and decorations. The centrepiece of the lounge is a large Bugatti horseshoe overlooking the seating area. Natural light shines through the macaronshaped window in the ceiling to bring more outdoor elements into the interior. Adjacent to the salon is the master suite, equipped with a double-bed to retreat for the night. As with any Bugatti, customization is available in terms of colours, materials and finishes throughout guarantees your Niniette will be a unique to each owner. “The Niniette is a genuine member of the Bugatti family,” explains Etienne Salomé, Design Director at Bugatti. Its duotone painted exterior makes it easily recognizable as a Bugatti, even at a distance. With Bugatti’s guiding design principles of ‘form follows performance’, the signature elliptical line incorporated in the side profile of the boat is a clear reference to the Chiron. Power comes from a potent 1,500 horsepower engine to propel you to 44 knots in supreme comfort. As with most things of significant beauty, the price of this floating objet d’art is yet to be finalized. www.bugattininiette.com
