e has likened shopping for scent to dating, in that you want an idea of what is out there before committing to ‘The One’. With a passion for perfume perfection, award-winning master perfumer, Roja Dove, coined the term ‘Haute Parfumerie’ on opening what has become the most influential and luxurious perfumery in the world – The Roja Dove Haute Parfumerie in London’s Harrods, ‘the greatest department store on earth’.

P R O F I L E The charismatic perfume expert talks to Angela Sara West about his nose for business, the lavish scents and bespoke fragrances he creates at his eponymous boutique and his commission by Laurent Perrier to create a candle for the quintessentially English event, The Chelsea Flower Show. When it comes to nostalgia, perfumes are up there for evoking memories. It's said that fragrance is not only intensely personal and subjective, but interpretive. Who better to take you on an aromatic journey of discovery than the perfume master himself, Roja Dove, famous for his incredible ability to identify over 800 different scents blindfolded. If anyone ‘nose’, he ‘nose’! Boasting a reputation that has enticed prestigious global institutions, including Rolls-Royce and Fabergé, the Sussex-born fragrance specialist's style epitomises indulgent luxury. His eponymous perfume line, Roja Parfums, is stocked in department stores all over the world. The perfumer owes his phenomenal success to his mother, who sparked his lifelong interest and exquisite taste in perfume. “I had a very happy childhood with my parents and brother and sister and was always very close to my mother throughout her life. She was an incredibly warm person who was always a lot of fun and very positive. She taught me how to be a kind and creative character who should always follow their dreams.” He says his love of both perfume and jewellery is down to her. ”She always wore L’Aimant from Coty and without this scent I wouldn’t have lived the life that I have. That’s quite a powerful thing to say but it’s true. I fell in love with this perfume when I smelt it on her one evening when I was a small boy. She was going out to a cocktail party and was wearing a gold Lamé dress. As she came in to kiss me goodnight, the light from the hallway created a corona around her and transformed her into this ethereal figure whose scent lingered in my room long after she left. From that moment, I was put on a path that I was born to walk down. Roja Parfums would not exist without that particular scent memory." Learning at Guerlain As a perfume obsessive, he discovered he had a natural talent. "I engaged with these golden elixirs, simply because it was something I was extremely invested in." He then discovered the work of Guerlain, and his intrigue grew even stronger. “Guerlain had an advertisement in a shop window showing couples dressed in period clothing with a date below: Jicky 1889, L’Heure Bleue 1912. I found it incomprehensible that these perfumes were so ancient, enticing me into the shop to learn more.” Roja became fascinated with the history behind both the scents and the house. "I would write to Guerlain so often, asking so many questions, that eventually they decided I would be less of a nuisance from within the company! I was offered the opportunity to design a perfumery training course for them. They knew I had an interest in it so they took the risk and allowed me to go forth with it.” He worked at the prestigious company for almost 20 years and became the company's first global ambassador outside of the family name. Working with some of the industry’s most famous noses, he himself became one of the most respected perfume experts in the world. “It was then bought by a very large corporation in 2001, and I am simply not a corporation kind of person. So, I left on Halloween 2001, which I thought was the perfect date to leave as it appealed to my humour! I started my own firm the very next day.” With a nose for business, he set up his own bespoke perfume service, which came about in a rather organic way. “Right after leaving Guerlain, I was asked by the Terrence Higgins Trust if I would offer up a scent for their annual charity auction. I have always loved to do what I can for a 14 Upscale Living Magazine |

good cause so, of course, I obliged. However, I didn’t want to just make a scent and put it up to bid on, as how would I know who likes the scent?” He therefore commissioned Lalique to hand blow a very special bottle, which he then sent to the auction... empty. “It seems a little bizarre but the intent was that whoever won would then have a perfume handmade to their specification by me. It was the highest-grossing entry at the auction, making more money than a brand new sports car and a tropical holiday for six people, which I was thrilled by! When the scent had been made for the highest bidder, their partner then decided they wanted one for themselves… and my bespoke service was born." Heaven in Harrods In 2004, he launched his haute-parfumerie boutique, the first of its kind, in Harrods, the store he refers to as the ‘spiritual home’ of his perfume brand. The perfumer's captivating treasure trove of the world’s most famous, rare, significant and historically-important scents is opulently adorned with antique furnishings, mirrors, silk and crystal. In 2011, he created H - The Exclusive Aoud, to celebrate the official launch of his brand Roja Parfums and his long-term collaboration with the high-end department store. “I was terrified on launch day because I had sunk my entire life savings into this project. Much to my relief, our entire stock for six months sold out within a matter of days, and continued to sell out each day for a long time. We were quite literally making as many bottles as we could in a day and carrying them straight into the store to be sold again. It really was rather funny now that I look 16 Upscale Living Magazine |

back! I created three specific H fragrances for Harrods to celebrate our special relationship." Roja’s launch was the most successful in Harrods’ history, and he remains their best-selling perfume brand today. Unlock your perfume personality! Want to discover your perfect signature fragrance? Roja’s Maître de Consultation offers private, personal fragrance consultations in Roja’s Salon de Parfum. “My Odour Profiling is a process I created myself and copyrighted. It's a specific way of digging down into the client’s olfactive fingerprint and matching them with their perfect fragrance." The hour-long Odour-Profiling technique takes the approach Roja uses with his bespoke work - finding the fragrance that is best matched to the individual. "Clients' perceptions of scent are revolutionised, as it is very much an interactive learning experience. The service is also available at my flagship boutique in the Burlington Arcade." A labour of love… The actual scent-making process can take anywhere from six months to two years to complete. “When I am working on a perfume, I am working at it constantly, and often on many at a time. I like to keep coming back to a scent to ensure it is not rushed and that I am happy with it under different mind frames.” Roja only works with the finest-quality raw materials, some of which

require harvesting at very specific times. “My personal mantra is that if you are going to do anything, why not do it properly? The rose I use comes from Grasse in the South of France. It takes 308,000 flowers to make just one kilo of oil, and these flowers can only be harvested before noon in the month of May. A kilo starts at £35,000 to purchase and therefore very few perfumes use this precious oil. And yet, I make a candle out of it…”
that govern every bodily function or action, giving us energy, lifting us from glumness or enhancing sensations of pleasure."
Cool, fresh, fruity, powdery, sweet... the premium perfumer explains that the top, heart and base notes are an easy way of identifying where each ingredient sits in the composition of a perfume. “If you imagine a perfume like a triangle, the top notes are the apex. These are higher up in the nose and more diffusive, which means they evaporate away from the perfume quickest. Top notes are typically citrus materials, heart notes tend to involve flowers and fruits, while base notes sit at the bottom of the triangle. These are less diffusive notes, like leathers and woods and balsams, which stay on the skin for much longer. This is what it means when a perfume changes over time – the notes fall away one after the other, starting at the top of the triangle and working their way down.” Memories & mood…
He says odours work like a cat-burglar, intruding unannounced into our minds and soul. "When revisited, they unlock the floodgates of memories and emotions, leaving a profound imprint in our mind. Scent is like a portal to some place inside us that contains risk and revelation. Smell brings everything into technicolour; it is the most intimate of the senses."
So, what's the science behind wearing a fragrance? How does a scent work as a memory evoker and mood enhancer? "Fragrance has been used to change mood since antiquity, which is why smell is the most profound of all the senses. A scent is one of the best things you can buy to make you feel good as each odour stimulates the synapses, which release hormones
"Scent is transformative... When we smell vanilla, it triggers a sense of comfort within us, whilst citrus notes revive and uplift us. Scent has the power to make one think, feel, or even do. Fragrance is an extension of the soul."
For those with an acute sense of smell, is there a risk of sensory overload? “Oh, completely! London can be such a cacophony of scent that one small section of a pavement can smell different to the next. I simply cannot travel on the tube!” "It's amazing how many people have no idea what they are smelling when they aren’t presented with marketing, visuals, or simply being told. Most people struggle to even say what a lone ingredient is when they are smelling it. Because of my work – and I have been doing this for a very long time – I am able to identify many perfumes and notes instantly. It took a lot of work to commit scents to memory and create my ‘olfactive rolodex’." 17 Upscale Living Magazine |

P R O F I L E with fragrance and Great Britain is my homage to my country, for which I was made an ambassador for The GREAT Campaign – the biggest honour of my life.” The Fragrance Foundation has also recognised Roja for his contribution, dedication and passion for the industry. Inhaling inspiration… Roja travels the world for his work and even spent six months a year for three years in the Middle East, learning about their ancient ingredient, Oud. “Few perfumers have enjoyed that experience and it is a massive complement when Middle Eastern clients ask ‘How do you know our smell?’, because that means I have done the ingredient the utmost justice.”
According to Roja, nobody has a particularly extraordinary olfactive talent - some just have more sensitive noses than others. As one of the most significant ‘noses’ of this century, he worked hard to refine his sense of smell, learning each of the raw materials and hundreds upon hundreds of perfume references by heart. "What really enables you to be a ‘nose’ is practice. I always compare it to a singer or a dancer; they may have a natural gift for rhythm or pitch, but what really refines the talent is practice." What can we do to enhance our sense of smell, train our noses to enjoy more scents and what are his tips for readers looking to make their mark in the perfume industry? “Practice, practice, practice. The best way to really understand a scent or a perfume is to smell it in comparison to another. That way, the nuances of each will come to the fore and you will be able to pick out styles and notes more distinctly. Smell things on card, away from the perfumery hall, and spend time with each scent under your nose to allow the ingredients to pop out at you. Read the olfactive descriptions and notes to help you along, join online fragrance communities and invest in discovery atomisers and libraries. Immerse yourself in as much scent as you can. It’s like writing an essay; you wouldn’t do it without reading a hundred essays yourself.” Flower power! Roja once collaborated with the Duchess of Devonshire to create a very special candle for the Chelsea Flower Show. “I tend to do a candle with the Champagne brand, Laurent-Perrier, each year and this was a limited edition. I worked with Her Grace's gardener, learnt about all the incredible plants in her garden at Chatsworth Estate and incorporated these oils into a candle for their entry at the Chelsea Flower Show. Such fun!” His favourite flowers? “I love white flowers. Because they have no colour, they need to attract pollinators in another way, so they compensate in scent. White flowers contain a particular molecule called indole, and flowers like jasmine are incredibly sensual. I like this rather risqué floral fact." Roja reveals many of his clients have become his friends but, naturally, is discreet about his discerning clientele. “Even the people I work the most closely with do not know. The clients that come to me for my bespoke work come for a very specific service. It is a very personal process as I am finding out every detail of their lives. It’s a bit like a doctor’s confidentiality oath, except that many clients say that coming to see me is like seeing a therapist!” Roja Parfums boasts a particularly special trio of fragrances, the Haute Luxe Collection. “Each scent is a particular story that is personal to me, so these are, without doubt, my favourites. ROJA is simply the fragrance I made for myself, A Goodnight Kiss captures the moment I fell in love 18 Upscale Living Magazine |
JUNE 2017 www.upscalelivingmag.com
His inspiration is derived from the myriad of people and places, among other things, he encounters around the globe. “This can find its form in anything from a word or story, to a place or concept. I am constantly inspired… I am very lucky to travel so much and therefore be exposed to the beauty the world has to offer.” Roja says he takes the utmost care in communicating his brand. “I travel the world visiting Roja Parfums stockists and train any staff that represent me to ensure that, wherever in the world you go, the same message of my brand is being communicated. I go through everything from the materials I work with, to the scents in my collection and the stories behind them. This is a very important thing for me to do because my brand is very much a part of me and is privately owned and self-funded by me. What people really respond well to about my work is that it is personable and feels real, made by a real perfumer.” When he’s not on the road, Roja spends Tuesdays to Thursdays at his beautiful flat in London’s Mayfair, catching up with friends, holding business meetings and working on fragrances. His head office is in bustling Brighton on the south coast, where he spends Fridays and Mondays working with his team and enjoys resting at weekends. How does he see the perfume industry evolving and where does he see himself, and his wonderful perfume brand, in five years' time? "I hope that Roja Parfums remains a name that people associate with the ultimate example of fine fragrance. It has grown at such an alarming rate thus far that day-by-day, I struggle to fathom how it can grow further, yet it just continues to. The perfume industry is a fascinating thing... we are past the time of the next big blockbuster or celebrity scent and are very much in a time where the public want fragrances of quality, creativity and individuality. Small, niche and luxury brands are having continued success, but I do wonder if this might alter at some point as the conglomerates have bought up most of these names." So, was Coco Chanel right when she said 'The sense of smell is the only one that is still instinctive. It lives on nostalgia, the subconscious'? “Completely!”

JORDANA WOODLAND Naked Princess - Livin’ La Vida Boudoir!
| By Angela Sara West
W
hat woman doesn’t want to look and feel fabulous? Combining elegance and luxury, contemporary lingerie and lifestyle brand, Naked Princess, encourages women to embrace their femininity through the empowering daily ritual of ‘boudoir’. The brand firmly believes that boudoir is not just a space, but a state of mind… a lasting confidence that can only be attained through unapologetic self-care.

P R O F I L E
Angela Sara West talks Jordana Woodland about her timeless lounge wear, lingerie and beauty products, her celebrity fans and the secrets to her sensational success. As the CEO and Creative Director of Naked Princess, what drives and inspires you? I know it sounds cliché, but honestly, love is what drives me. The love for my children, my work, my family, my friends… it’s what inspires me every day. Who are your business icons? There are so many! But to name one, I would say Jessica Alba. She juggles being a successful business woman, loving mom and a generous public figure with tremendous class, savvy and grace. You set up your company in 2011. What was your inspiration for creating a lifestyle brand? As a young girl, I fell in the love with the “art of dressing.” I believe that creating a boudoir is not only about curating a beautiful physical space, but an emotional place for women to balance the many facets of their daily lives. It’s about taking a moment for unapologetic self-care. Naked Princess’ products are created with this passion. I wanted to create a company that made women feel confident, sexy and honored. What have been the biggest challenges of starting up and running your own business? I had no idea how to run a business when I first started Naked Princess, so for the first year I ran into many roadblocks and felt completely blind sided at times. But those hardships were integral to the growth of the company. The hiccups and setbacks helped to define my vision and focus for what I truly wanted this company to be. The biggest challenge now is attempting to take on too much. When you’re passionate about something, like I am about Naked Princess, you want to do everything you can to see it thrive and flourish. That’s a beautiful aspect of loving what you do, but it can also be the biggest test. It’s a constant learning curve of when to push harder and when to just let go. When I’m worn out and overworked, I try to remind myself that I can’t really give my best. Confidence and clarity are key components for success, and you can’t have either if you’re stretched too thin. Are you very ‘hands-on’ with every aspect of your business? You have to be! If you can’t stand behind your products 100%, then why be in business? There’s a fine line between being “hands on” and “micromanaging” though, so it’s definitely a balancing act. I work with an amazing team that I sincerely trust, which is unbelievably important. I can’t do it all - it takes a village. But at the end of day, it’s up to me to ensure my vision for the company remains on track. How would you describe your style? Feminine, sexy and sometimes playful. Every woman is our ideal customer, and, of course, the men who appreciate them! Our company is all about promoting confidence in women; encouraging them to take time for themselves, even if it’s just a quick moment to spritz on their favorite scent as they are heading out the door… The woman who wears our lounge wear and lingerie wants quality pieces that are effortlessly chic and luxuriously comfortable. 24 Upscale Living Magazine |

P R O F I L E Which are your go-to pieces to make you feel your most attractive and confident?
You have also created custom-formulated beauty products and gifts… What are your top beauty must-haves?
For me, a matching bra and panty set underneath my outfit is a big confidence boost. I love waking up in the morning just so I can pick my favorite set of lingerie to wear. It sets my mood for the day.
Lip gloss, lip gloss and more lip gloss!! I must admit, I’m a bit of a lip gloss junkie and never leave home without it. I keep a small collection with me at all times. It’s the easiest way to pull an outfit together or just give yourself a little afternoon pick-me-up.
What sets your brand apart from similar high-end offerings? Naked Princess isn’t just about offering quality and timeless products, our passion lies in how those products come together to create the ultimate boudoir experience. Cindy Crawford is among your famous fans. Are you willing to divulge a few more big names from your celebrity clientele? Sure - Mindy Kaling, Catt Sadler, Gina Rodriguez and Arielle Kebbel. What is the most rewarding aspect of what you do? Hearing how Naked Princess positively affects our customers. Whether it’s that special lingerie set that makes her feel sexy and confident, the lip gloss that instantly makes her feel “put together” or the candle that calms her down after a hectic day… hearing our customers speak about their purchases in that way motivates me. It shows me that we’re on the right track and that all of the hard work is making a difference. What we do is enhancing someone’s daily experience, and that is unbelievably rewarding.
And your beauty, diet and exercise tips? Everything in moderation and don’t forget to have fun. Nothing is less motivating than a stale routine. Make sure to mix things up every once in a while. Try something new. What’s the secret to your success? Having the courage and perseverance to learn from my mistakes, to own my vision and never lose sight of what’s important. Where do you Naked Princess in five years’ time? We are focusing heavily on expanding Naked Princess through our wholesale and e-commerce platforms, which is really exciting. We feel so honored to be carried in prestigious hotels, spas and boutiques around the country (Ritz Carlton, Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental and more). I’m excited to see our company reach the next level of success and go global in the next five years.
What are your top tips for women setting up a business?
Finally, how can women create instant glamour and inner confidence?
Believe in your vision, believe in your products and know your customer. Those are the key building blocks for success.
I think women feel beautiful and fabulous when they take time to do something for themselves… whether that’s getting their nails done, having a massage, going shopping or just generally spoiling themselves, without carrying around any guilt. When we allow ourselves this time, our mind and body feels refreshed and recharged. As simple as it sounds, trust me… it’s a beautiful outcome! Surround yourself with what you love, experience each moment and live the boudoir life!
You’re not only a CEO, but a mother, model and a muse. As a working mom with endless creative meetings, photoshoots and red carpet events to attend, how do you maintain a successful work-life balance? I’m not going to lie, it’s a constant whirlwind. I try to take an hour each morning, before anyone else wakes up and my emails start coming in, to just look at what my day is going to be like. As the CEO of my household and my company, I write everything down and assess my day accordingly. I try not to take too much on, while also trying to tackle as much as I can. It’s always a balancing act and some days I find better balance than others, but that’s just a part of being human. As a mom, you learn the art of patience and perseverance.

You were born in the Philippines and now split your time between Montana and Los Angeles. Do your travels inspire you? My business travels mainly consist of flying back and forth between my two hometowns; Whitefish, Montana and Los Angeles, California. Both places inspire me in their own unique ways, so having the privilege of being able to call both of them home is something I’m incredibly grateful for. Where do you head for some well-deserved R&R? I love Kauai any time of the year. The culture and laid-back atmosphere always makes me want to turn off my ‘phone and force me to recharge my batteries. What’s hot this spring season in the lingerie, accessories and beauty world and what pieces should we be adding to our wardrobes to ensure we’re on-trend this summer? Honestly, I say wear what makes you feel good. It doesn’t matter if it’s on trend or not. If you feel sexy and confident in it, then own it!

Rihanna Chopard Shines Bright | By Smitha Sadanandan
Luxury watch and jewelry brand Chopard and pop star Rihanna’s new RIHANNA CHOPARD collection comprises signature pieces in vivid colors that capture the charm and spirit of the singer’s home island – Barbados. Undeniably, Rihanna’s love for Chopard sparked this creative journey, as she worked alongside Caroline Scheufele, Chopard Co-President and Creative Director, to co-create the bold line. Embracing Rihanna’s spirit and aesthetics, while hinging on the brand’s vision of classic glamour, the new chandelier earrings featuring butterflies and flowers are adorned with diamonds and nearly a dozen colored gemstones. With tsavorites, rubellites, green beryls, aquamarines, Paraiba tourmalines and multi-color sapphires accenting the danglers, they are bright and vivacious as Rihanna. “I have always been in love with Chopard’s exquisite jewelry, so to actually design collections with them is something I still can't believe…to reveal the new pieces in Cannes is pretty amazing,” said Rihanna. “It was a really incredible process and I learned so much!”
CHOPARD-Haute Joaillerie Collection - Earrings in 18k white gold and titanium set with blue, pink and yellow sapphires, tsavorites, rubellites, green beryls, aquamarines, Paraiba tourmalines, rubies, amethysts, topazs, lazulites and diamonds | Earrings in 18k white ethical gold certified ‘Fairmined’ featuring four pear-shaped diamonds (9.7cts) and set with brilliant-cut (5.2cts), pear-shaped (4.7cts), oval-cut and marquise-cut diamonds | Necklace in 18k rose ethical gold certified ‘Fairmined’ and green ceramic.
The lush foliage of Barbados and its Carnivals proved key references for the RIHANNA CHOPARD creations that meld urban chic and classic glamour. “Rihanna and I collaborated closely on the collections so you can feel her unstoppable energy, strong creativity, and inherent sense of design in every piece,” said Caroline Scheufele. “With her unique style, she redefines the way people see and wear jewelry.” Also, Chopard’s Ice Cube line gets nine new additions inspired by Rihanna. The capsule collection includes pieces with clean lines and minimalist geometry. Rosewood Tucker’s Point Golf Course in Bermuda
The Fairmont Banff Springs is the only golf resort in the world that includes a castle, two mountain ranges, elk, and a century’s worth of railroad lore. When Banff Springs opened in 1928 it was the most expensive golf course ever built.

TIME + TIDE SLEEP-OUT UNDER THE STARS, SOUTH LUANGWA, ZAMBIA Leading the way in responsible tourism in Zambia for over 60 years, Time + Tide’s Norman Carr Safaris initiated the Sleep-out under the stars concept in 2008 in the South Luangwa Valley. This is wild Africa at its best – sleeping out under the stars in the spectacular and extremely remote Luwi dry river bed with just a bed roll, a pillow and a mosquito net, not even a tent! Follow in the footsteps of the first safari pioneers, including Norman Carr himself, as they discovered the wonders of the South Luangwa. This overnight adventure is only for the most courageous of spirit. Led by one of the top guide and scout teams at Norman Carr Safaris, a maximum of six guests venture out from the remotest bush camp on foot in the mid afternoon. “It’s a private activity where you find a spot to camp, make a campfire for a game ranger’s dinner and then relax with a cool drink,” explains Mindy Roberts from Time + Tide Africa. “Then, having shared adventure stories around the fire, sleep out under the magnificent African sky whilst the guide and scout keep a watch until morning.” With a surcharge on the nightly rate as a camp room is reserved just in case of a last minute change of heart. www.timeandtideafrica.com

THE ROYAL LIVINGSTONE VICTORIA FALLS Zambia Hotel by Anantara
Experience the Royal Treatment | By Heléne Ramackers
W
hat do you do when you get invited on a four-day sojourn to visit The Royal Livingstone Victoria Falls Zambia Hotel by Anantara? You pack with lightning speed and wait at the airport, passport in hand. Heléne Ramackers was fortunate to visit one of the shiniest jewels on the Anantara crown.
I’ve always wondered what all the fuss is about whenever someone waxes lyrical about the Victoria Falls. Seen one waterfall, seen them all … When the opportunity presented itself to go and see one of the Seventh Natural Wonders of the World, I didn’t hesitate. Thanks to Minor Hotels, my trip was arranged in record time and I set off for the heart of Africa. My flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg connected me onto Harry Mwaangwa Nkumbula International Airport, where the sweltering heat engulfs you when you step off the plane. A long line through customs and passport control has you thanking your lucky stars that there is some form of ventilation in the airport building. “Welcome to Zambia” a friendly customs official announces as he stamps my passport and I point myself in the direction of the luggage carousel. I have little hope that my suitcase 43 Upscale Living Magazine |

has winged its way to my final point of arrival as the plane had a technical problem in Cape Town and we got bumped onto an already full flight. How they managed to identify my luggage and put in on the correct flight is a miracle in itself but there it is – my suitcase! My flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg connected me onto Harry Mwaangwa Nkumbula International Airport, where the sweltering heat engulfs you when you step off the plane. How they managed to identify my luggage and put in on the correct flight is a miracle in itself but there it is – my suitcase! Filled with elation, I am met by the very friendly Catherine from Bushtracks Africa, a key partner of The Royal Livingstone by Anantara, who discusses my itinerary with me while my driver Aston loads my luggage into the waiting vehicle. He drives me through the historic town of Livingstone and drops me off at the jetty where a refreshing juice and my transport to the hotel await my arrival. I am loaded onto my water taxi by Mathew and Miyanda and they 44 Upscale Living Magazine |
careen down the great Zambezi River, expertly getting us through the rapids. We dock riverside adjacent to the sundeck and I am welcomed by Joyce Sikabbubba, Public Relations Manager and Naji Esta, Hotel Manager, both at The Royal Livingstone Hotel. After some refreshing iced tea, a spa therapist appears to treat me to a relaxing hand massage. I am taken to my impressive Deluxe Corner Suite where my butler, Kennedy is at hand to cater to my every whim. My room is everything I hoped for, and more. The King sized bed is covered in the finest white linen and at night, the mosquito net is elegantly draped to keep any pesky buzzers out. I have the luxury of all the comforts that make me feel right at home – Wifi, air conditioning, tea and coffee making facilities, a mini bar, satellite television and a laundry service. The bathroom is equipped with an inviting tub, but my favourite is the rain shower where I wash the day away with the wonderful fragrant complimentary Molton Brown shower gel. Even though there are 169 rooms and 4 suites, the layout of the site is so cleverly designed that you hardly ever encounter your neighbour. I quickly unpack and drink in my surroundings – I look up and there’s a zebra grazing right in front of my patio and to his right an impala is nibbling on some grass. To my left is the crystal clear pool where you have unparalleled views of the Zambezi River and in the distance, you can see the smoke rising from the Victoria Falls.
JUNE 2017 www.upscalelivingmag.com
A big drawcard to visiting Zambia is the Victoria Falls and at The Royal Livingstone by Anantara, I am just ten minutes away from unlimited access to this magnificence. It is impossible to describe the magnitude and the beauty of ‘The Smoke That Thunders’. It is something you have to experience at least once in your life. With a drop of 108 metres down the sheer rockface and a width of 1,700 metres, the multitude of water cascading can be heard from afar when approaching The Falls. I stand there, mesmerised by something so extraordinary that it takes my breath away. The evening sunsets are so jaw-dropping that you will linger long after the sun has disappeared. Dinner is served in the Dining Room and I order the slow braised lamb with parmesan and garden pea nshima cake and rosemary jus. Meals at The Royal Livingstone by Anantara are wellthought through and come with the freshest ingredients. Executive chef John Easingwood changes the menu every three days so you should never have the same meal twice. There is definitely something for every palate. It is day two and my guide, Mwaka Chilinga collects me in an open Land Cruiser for my game drive. We stop at the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, at 6600 hectares it is the second smallest game park in Zambia. Our first sighting is of a Puku, followed by some warthogs, buffalo and the very graceful Angolian giraffe. After a picnic stop where I am served coffee and muffins, we head to a different part of the park. Mwaka parks
T R A V E L our vehicle and gestures that I climb out as we are going to see the rhinos. Hesitant at first, I soon realise that this isn’t your average rhino sighting. We are soon met by Kapoko, alias Kilo and three other guides carrying rifles. I am informed that we will now be walking to the rhinos, on foot, in single file and that we should listen to his commands. He is with them every day and knows when it is not safe to approach them. Under a tree, I am met by the most incredible sighting of a mother and her eight-month old calf. The calf is making dolphin-like sounds, indicating that she wants to nurse. The rest of the rhinos are peacefully resting in the shade. What an honour to be amongst these endangered animals! Back at the hotel, I indulge in a lovely English breakfast in The Royal Livingstone Dining Room after which I take respite in my air conditioned room. Next on my agenda is a 15 minute flight over the Falls in a helicopter. We are met at reception and driven to United Air Charter where we are briefed on our flight path and safety measures that we have to follow. Excitement is evident as we make our way to the helicopter which has already been started by the pilot. We get strapped in, handed our headphones and there we go! Nothing prepares you for the ‘flight of angels’, the unbridled scenery and seeing the falls from the sky. This is awe-struck and thunderstruck rolled into one. High tea is served in The Royal Livingstone Lounge, where you are reminded of the bygone era of colonial splendour when faced with a life-sized painting of Sir David Livingstone. The treats for High tea are impeccably displayed, with a choice of quiches and cakes to delight your tastebuds. I opt for the Flourless chocolate cake and the Black Forest offering. I think I’ve died and gone to chocoholic heaven! Dinner is a candlelit affair under the monkey tree. I am lucky enough to experience the Dining by Design concept, exclusive to Anantara. This is a special dinner created authentically for you, with personal butlers and a chef attending to your every need. I am joined by Joyce and thankful for her sidesplitting company. The food is excellent; I order the fillet of beef and complete the meal with some mouth-watering chocolate mousse. My next morning is spent at leisure and I awake early with a skirmish in the garden. I take a look to see vervet monkeys scavenging for anything to eat. I notice a tiny infant, clutched tightly by its mother. A visit to Livingstone Island is scheduled for the morning and a flat hull speedboat whisks you over the rapids at high speed. On Livingstone Island, you are given a guided 45 Upscale Living Magazine |

T R A V E L tour of the falls and can then opt for a swim like no other in the world. The friendly and helpful guides from Tongabezi ensure that you are comfortable and know what you are in for. For your swim, you make your way across the rocks in the Zambezi River and your final destination is a whirling mass of water about one metre from the edge of the Victoria Falls, appropriately called the Devil’s Pool. After this adrenaline filled activity, lunch is served under a gazebo where you indulge in muffins, Eggs Benedict and coffee or tea. Muli, my Spa therapist is hard at work on my foot ritual. Your feet are softened by the combination of milk and salt crystals, which work wonders as an exfoliation agent. My 60 minute Zambezi massage has me drifting into dreamland it is so relaxing. Muli uses a detox oil containing ginger, juniper and cinnamon. It is time for dinner on the Royal Livingstone Express Steam Train. Joseph, our Bushtracks bus driver takes us to the train where champagne welcomes your red-carpet arrival. The steam train sets off for the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe and on the bridge, you are cajoled to climb off to take a closer look at this beautiful piece of history. Dinner comes with all the trimmings – a six-course meal, starting with cauliflower soup, salmon fishcake, mushroom risotto, lamb shoulder with polenta, lemon tart and the most delicious biscotti, which you can wash down with your beverage of choice. It is time to pack up and start my journey home. I am suddenly overcome with sadness, thinking I have to leave this magical place. Little did I know, I left a piece of my heart in Africa. Travel tips: - Zambia is situated in a malaria area, so speak to your healthcare practitioner about taking precautions. - A visa is required when visiting Zambia - The Zambian currency is the Kwacha, but major currencies are accepted at the hotel and converted into Kwachas. Thank you to Minor Hotels for putting such a wonderful trip together. I would recommend travellers seeking to visit Zambia to visit the iconic Royal Livingstone Victoria Falls Zambia Hotel by Anantara.
