Hublot & Marc Ferrero celebrate the 21st Century Woman | BY NIKITA VIVEK PAWAR
In turn, wife, mother, friend, lover, businesswoman, femme fatale, fashion icon, or a night owl, for every hour of the day, the modern woman sets herself apart as unpredictable, multifaceted, and unique. Artist Marc Ferrero finds his muse in the multifaceted and headstrong woman of the 21st Century to epitomize his creations in collaboration with Hublot. It wouldn’t be false to say that the Swiss luxury brand has redefined luxury and its definition with some of the most interesting ventures since its inception in 1980. Deriving its name from the French word for ‘porthole,’ the brand has brought a newer perspective to style, horology, and art. From the concept of fusion to creating a smart system to detect counterfeits, Hublot has always been innovating and reinventing. The Swiss brand was also the first brand that used natural rubber straps for a gold luxury timepiece – a result of three years of research and development and $1 million to find the right method to reduce the chances of cracking or staining of the rubber strap. The first watch created by Carlo Crocco, founder of Hublot, which was showcased at the 1980 Basel Watch Fair, failed to attract a single potential customer at the fair but later on went to be a commercial hit making over $2 million worth of business. Not only did it become an integral part of the sports watches, but it also got a respectable stature in the world of luxury timepieces. This very rubber strap was the founding stone of the ‘Art of Fusion’ literally as well as metamorphically! Combining various contrasting 10 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | JUNE 2020
elements became synonymous with Hublot’s ethos. EXCITING COLLABORATIONS While there have been many partnerships with brands in the art, automobiles, music, and more, the brand further went to be the first luxury watchmaking company to be soccer and sponsor the Swiss National Soccer team in 2006, a bold move that might have raised eyebrows within the watch world. Still, it proved to be a smart move as the players wore their Hublot Big Bang ASF bringing the Swiss watch brand into the limelight. The brand has had a keen eye for artists and creators that could add a possible vision and parallel thinking to the world of art as well as be integrated into the world of horology and craftsmanship. The collaborated with Carlos Cruz-Diez in 2015 highlighted Cruz-Diez in kinetic art - a disruptive art form that places the spectator’s perception at the center of the piece to question the purpose and status of a work of art. The collection brought an array of colors in constant motion, changing in potentially infinite combinations. Beyond the purely visual effect, the horological color composition changes and evolves with the passing of the hours, minutes, and seconds, mirroring other works by the late artist. THE BIG BANG COLLECTION When Jean-Claude Biver joined Hublot in 2004, he wanted to take the brand to reach a new level. Reaching back to Hublot’s roots

and created a watch was represented the true essence of Hublot – the fusion of unusual materials together and emphasize the Art of Fusion. Fifteen years later, the Big Bang still holds the title to be one of the most desirable watches and has been recreated in various versions. Last year, Hublot collaborated with Marc Ferrero, the artist behind Storytelling Art, to create a collection of watches that glorified the spirit of womanhood in the 21st Century, who distinguishes herself through the multiplicity of her roles. With the spinels in shades of red, and topazes for the turquoise version, forty-two fine stones decorated the bezel of the 39-mm case. The dial was where all the magic happened. The artist finds the modern woman to be in black shades and bright lipstick, that she is confident in her skin yet mysterious. With one touch of its “One Click” patented fastening system, the collection was limited to 50 pieces per version. The leather strap for this version was in alligator and rubber, adding a touch of sophistication appropriate for the moment. THE BIG BANG ONE CLICK MARC FERRERO 2.0 For its second edition of the artistic collaboration with the master of Storytelling Art, Hublot invites ‘Lipstick’ ones again but this time in a monochromatic look. In the form of two 100 limited-edition numbered models, with a lacquered dial and calf and rubber strap and one in satin-finish polished steel and resin, all in white. The other is black ceramic with a lacquered dial and calf and rubber strap, in a combination of black and white. Both the versions have the artist’s representation of the headstrong woman on the dial with dark sunglasses and a flashy red lipstick – the only element that has color. The dials of both the watches are set with two diamonds that elevate the presentation of the watch. These versions of the Big Bang are introduced with the One-Click technology. The straps of the watch carry the artist’s creations, adding a chic yet spontaneous and fun spirit. Like the other members of the Big Bang Collection, these watches also have interchangeable straps in matching alligator skin and rubber. «I love the power of black and white. Shade and light. Yin and Yang. One is profound, unclassifiable, eternal. The other is subtle, ethereal, timeless. They symbolize antitheses and complementarity. Choosing black and white means getting straight to the point without an excess of tonalities. The black and white make ‘Lipstick’ even more graphic and its red lipstick—more magnetic.” – said Marc Ferrero.

ART
PAUL DAY
Captures "Moments in Time“ | BY TRACY BEARD
Art, in all its forms, has brought beauty and intrigue into the world since the beginning of time. Paul Day, a British sculptor, adds to that beauty with his gorgeous high-relief and free-standing sculptures. He creates stunning, lifelike 3D scenes and sculptures in bronze, terracotta, resin and stainless steel. His high-relief sculptures capture moments in time, tell a story and recreate historical moments. Paul’s talent for bringing solid materials to life is nothing short of phenomenal. His intense and detailed works appear in public forums and private homes all over the world. I first met Paul while traveling on a canal cruise with European Waterways. Our small group of six engaged in a private tour of his art gallery near Dijon, France. During a recent interview with Paul, I discovered more about his artistic process and the story behind his public and private works. I found that not only is he a gifted artist but also a warm and genuine person. Paul began his career after attending art school at the Dartington School of Arts and graduating from Cheltenham School of Art. During our interview, I asked him the following questions. WHAT STEPS DO YOU TAKE TO CREATE EACH PIECE? I begin by researching the subject. Then I draw sketches on paper and put together models in clay, followed by a discussion with the client evaluating the model. I use the same process when making something for my gallery. After discussions, I make a more elaborate miniature model, gain approval to make the piece and then create a full-size sculpture. This piece goes to the foundry where I act as the project manager. A rubber mold is made from the clay and used to make a wax copy. The wax pieces are cast into bronze, and the sculpture is patinated (chemically colored) and finally installed. HOW DO YOU GET CLIENTS? My work consists of commissioned and non-commissioned jobs. Some commissioned projects come from winning a competition where the person or company taking 1st place receives the commission. Other pieces come about from people that have discovered my work in public places or have heard about me from former clients. Lastly, I sell my art online and directly from my gallery near Dijon, France, when people come to visit.
14 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | JUNE 2020
TELL ME ABOUT A FEW OF YOUR COMMISSIONED PUBLIC PIECES. An Urban Comedy was my first large-scale public piece. A private banker in Brussels commissioned me to create an 82-foot-long terracotta frieze in the Royal Galleries of Saint Hubert in Brussels. I knew absolutely nothing about Brussels, enabling me to go into the project with an open mind. I spent several months researching the city, meeting architects, interviewing historians and talking to everyday people. I read a lot about the country and watched numerous films. I discovered the city as a character. An Urban Comedy expresses a bird’s-eye view of the city. It is a visual novel with chapters covering the city’s history, physical structures, contemporary culture, and political and daily life. I made over 100 scenes, and it took 18 months to finish. I subsequently won a competition for the commission of The Battle of Britain monument that sits on the Victoria Embankment in London. The frieze is a visual narrative. I took moments in the island’s history and created something that rose to the occasion. Looking at this frieze is like viewing the stained-glass windows in a cathedral. Each scene is part of a story that reads like a book. The Meeting Place, located inside St Pancras railway station in London, is a 30-foot-tall bronze sculpture with a high-relief frieze at the base. The designers determined the need for art during the last 12 months of the station’s construction. They wanted something that captured the spirit of romance in railway travel during the 1940s and 1950s and drew on the mood of the David Lean film “Brief Encounter.” The idea was to make something user friendly that was easily accessible to the public, nothing too highbrow or obscure. The sculpture is a large couple embracing. I wanted to add a little bit of bite to the project, so the reliefs at the base deconstruct relationships between couples traveling through the train station. Many people passing through the station spend considerable time talking amongst themselves about what might be happening in each scene. The scenes remain ambiguous and invite the viewer to interpret the narrative through their own eyes, working out whether the relationships are functional or dysfunctional. My first sculpture in the United States was recently installed in Beverly Hills. The client named it Creation. This piece was privately commissioned

and was something new for me. It is a very minimalist sculpture that stands nine feet in diameter. Inspired by a piece of jewelry that evoked something personal for the client, I designed the abstract sculpture using proportions based on the mathematical ideas of the Fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio. These measurements bring balance and beauty to things in nature and art. Sometimes things just feel visually right, and it’s often due to such proportions. Creation is not the type of project I usually undertake, but in this instance I fancied the challenge of something new. Working on it has given me ideas for other abstract pieces, and it is nice to do something different and well outside of my comfort zone. WHAT OTHER UNUSUAL PIECES HAVE YOU MADE? A wonderful American couple living in New Zealand traveled on one of the canal cruise ships through Burgundy, France, and visited my gallery. I wasn’t home, but my wife showed them around. A few days later, they called and invited me to meet with them on the ship for a drink. They asked if I had ever considered making sculptures of domestic farm animals. They asked, “Do you do sheep?” “Well, yes, of course I do sheep” was my instant answer, feeling puzzled by the question. Then the husband said, “There are too many sheep in New Zealand already. What about cows?” So cows it was. Having never sculpted animals before this serendipitous meeting, this project led to the creation of a series of monumental cows and chickens that are now installed at the glorious Craggy Range vineyards near Napier on North Island. I never intended to sculpt giant bronze farm animals, but I’ve acquired quite a taste for it! 16 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | JUNE 2020
ARE YOU WORKING ON ANYTHING NEW? My current project is for Rollins College in Winter Park, Orlando, Florida. I have been invited to create a sculpture of one of their most famous alumni, Mr. Fred Rogers. Living in Britain I didn’t grow up watching Mr. Rogers on television; but after completing some research, I discovered a deep admiration for the man and his values. Fred Rogers was an ordained minister and is famous for his show “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.” His philosophy was that love is at the root of everything and that each child is loveable just as they are. Mr. Rogers was well known for changing his shoes and donning his sweater at the start of each show. Famous characters on his show included Mr. McFeeley, Lady Aberlin and handyman Negri. The land of makebelieve included Trolley and the puppets King Friday, Daniel the tiger, Henrietta the pussycat, and Mr. Owl. Everything Fred Rogers did was to help and educate young children. The bronze sculpture at the college will depict Mr. Rogers with his puppets surrounded by children. DO YOU FIND ANYTHING ESPECIALLY CHALLENGING ABOUT THE FRED ROGERS’ PIECE? Children are notoriously difficult to recreate. Most artists find them a struggle. Children often have a look that is very sophisticated and grown-up. It is hard to portray their complex expressions while retaining a childlike appearance. Children are whole beings in their own right, yet they are perplexing and often difficult to read.
ART
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING ARTISTS? I have always believed that my natural abilities are modest, but hard work and perseverance go a long way. I am very disciplined, and I work long hours. I don’t wait for the conditions to be “right” or for the inspiration to be there to work. I would say to aspiring artists that you should be in the studio every day and accept the mistakes you make until you get the results you are looking for. Working diligently over the decades could get you there. Nothing happens by magic. WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT YOUR WORK? Each day is truly a new beginning and full of possibilities. Sometimes it is difficult to get a sense of your mission in the world, but art gives me that sense of abundance. If, in some small way, my art touches peoples’ lives for the better and brightens someone’s day, then I can go to sleep a Happy man. Paul is a fabulous example of a gifted and gracious man that has added beauty to the world through his art and his delightful personality. He has several incredible pieces for sale in his gallery and is available to create one-of-a-kind pieces on commission. Contact Paul at paul@ pauldaysculpture.com.

The Spring Summer 2020 Ready-towear collection marked as Virginie Viard’s first solo collection as the Artistic Director of the French fashion house. With classic silhouettes and familiar prints, the designer elevated the jewelry to another level. Chanel is now has a magnifying legacy of two visionaries of all times, Coco Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld. The French fashion house has always redefined the societal norms to free the spirit of womanhood in every shape and form. From introducing trousers for women, Coco Chanel wanted to show a fearless side of women through jewelry as well. The designer always termed jewelry: A piece of jewelry should cause astonishment at most, not envy. It should remain an ornament and amusement. Since then, jewelry became an indispensable part of the Chanel silhouettes and allure. The first of the costume jewelry pieces were launched in the 1920s. Coco Chanel simplified the traditional settings to glorify the form and shape, giving it a new meaning altogether. She made fluidity a principle and liberty a virtue and established a timeless code for creativity. The designer merged faux pearls with precious metals to create some of the most extraordinary and unique designs. Collaborating with various goldsmiths and costume jewelry makers to
bring her dreams to reality, she crafted masterpieces that would complement the silhouettes. Chanel often used symbols and codes that she felt resonated with the persona of a free-spirited and head-strong woman. Karl Lagerfeld took the essential lessons of the jewelry from Coco Chanel and incorporated the designs in every way possible. The double C’s, lions, camellias, pearls and soon became associated with the brand and the unofficial logos as well. The brand’s iconic double C’s were then spotted at every season in the mainstay in the form of cropped out for earrings or brooches and bracelets. Continuing with the tradition of collaborating with jewelry makers for the jewelry collection, a major part of the collection is still entrusted with Desrues. Further in his tenure, Lagerfeld infused many concepts with the essence of the Chanel brand to create jewelry pieces and accessories that surpassed expectations every time. The final day of the Paris Fashion Week last year saw a much-awaited show. Karl Lagerfeld’s successor Virginie Viard presented her first time after becoming the Artistic Director of Chanel. Viard is the first woman to lead the fashion house after Gabrielle Chanel herself. The Spring Summer 2020 RTW Collection displays a marvelous conjugation of the eternal Chanel style with Karl Lagerfeld persona. The show at the Rue Cambon did not see elaborate and extravagant sets like Lagerfeld’s and the garments echoed Gabriella Chanel with every model

walking in. Playing with the classic colors of monochromes, pinks and reds of tweed dress, play suits, garçonne coat dresses, and little bellshaped skirts, the jewelry that accompanied every dress were characterised by softness yet a loud statement of glamor. The collection consists of over 54 pieces ranging from bracelets, necklaces, earrings to cuffs, brooches and rings. The collection extensively uses glass and faux pearls, resins, calfskin, denim and precious metals. A major part of the collection still re-imagines the double Cs in metal and strass broach or metals dangling earrings or pearl studded studs or long necklaces. With cluster necklaces and camellia, rings take you back to the 1920s with the double C and stars detailing. The collection also features a versatile collection of earrings from studs to danglers to clip on earring in various styles. Apart from the re-imagined interpretations, the brand also introduces a few funkier brooches like the guitar-shaped, a cassette tape, a belt, a denim and metal double C and a vinyl broach with the word ‘Chanel’ inscribed on it. The collections have some elaborate pieces like metal, glass pearl and strass intricately designed cuff or metal and calfskin earrings in the brand’s iconic letter C. The Spring Summer 2020 marked to be the beginning of a new era, where the modern woman would grow even stronger and express herself in her true form just like her matching jewelry.

J E W E L RY R Y
The MARIO UBOLDI
Collection | BY JYOTI BALANI
André C. Meyerhans, the founder and designer of Mario Uboldi jewelry art, is an award-winning architect. His magnificent creations blur traditional boundaries between art, architecture, and design. Mario Uboldi Jewelry Art is an articulation, part of a larger language in contemporary design with a cultural inflection that is applicable to different trades and to different scales. The designer’s approach focuses on analyzing phenomena in art, culture, nature, architecture, and distills them to their core parameters to get at their underlying principles. By combining diverse attributes, such as historic and contemporary characteristics, a new visual dialogue emerges which is rooted in its references. Mario Uboldi Jewelry Art not only blurs the boundaries between art and jewelry but also between cutting-edge production methodology and sophisticated goldsmith tradition which has been passed on for generations. In this interview, we spoke to the talented and acclaimed designer about current and future trends, important facets of the jewelry industry, and his several achievements throughout his illustrious career so far! WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO PURSUE A CAREER IN JEWELRY DESIGNING? There are certain things one does not decide in life but life decides for you. This is one of these moments. I was always interested in design and art and pursued architecture as my career. That I started to design jewelry is a coincident – agreeably a very nice one – but completely unintended. WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER THE MOST IMPORTANT FACETS OF THE JEWELRY INDUSTRY? The intangible mystery of dreams and emotions created by tangible preciousness. There is the sophistication of craftsmanship and quality of gemstones, the preciousness of materials, and ultimately the physical value of jewelry that serves as an objective measurement of importance in the jewelry industry. 20 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | JUNE 2020
JEWELRY
21 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | JUNE 2020
JEWELRY
And rightly so. However, the art of jewelry starts where it leaves behind comparison and solely focuses on itself and where rationality gives way to emotions. The pieces that evoke sentiments ultimately outshine everything else. WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE CURRENT AND FUTURE TRENDS IN JEWELRY GLOBALLY? Talking about fine jewelry, we see three trends in the global jewelry industry: 1. Jewelry as an investment – there will be a shift from perceived value to hard value. Customers will focus on material values and see this as an investment, something tangible that can be enjoyed every day. This will happen mainly in regards to the purity of the metal as well as in the quality of the stones – in particular diamonds. 2. Jewelry as emotional adornment – People long for meaningful and emotional designs that touch beyond its ostentatious appearance; the intrinsic spirit warms the soul and comforts the mind. 3. Socially responsible jewelry – this trend started a while ago. While the focus has shifted away lately due to more pressing matters, social responsibility and fair trading throughout the entire process of creating jewelry will become important again. 4. Online platforms – fine jewelry has been lagging behind in regard to all other trades when it comes to online sales. Considering most people got more accustomed to online purchases in the last few weeks and months and social distancing is glooming in the back of the head, more accessible fine jewelry will see an increase in non-brick-and-mortar activities than before. HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR EDUCATION HAS PREPARED YOU TO WORK IN THIS INDUSTRY? My academic study focused on architecture; harmonies of shapes, surface qualities, and color combinations belong to an architect’s repertoire to create functional and inspiring buildings. To date, my design approach shows this rational-explorative mannerism that is rooted in the engineering mindset of an architect. Most of my technical knowhow about jewelry making, I have learned in the workshop: settings, connections, locks, and surface treatment. Also the melting, molding, soldering, and polishing … I have learned from the workbench and not from the textbook. Much later I went back to school to study gemology. Gemology involves rough and polished diamonds, colored stones, and pearls. This study consolidated and broadened at the same time my knowledge of vital elements of
the jewelry. Each of the above engagements prepared me in a different way for what the jewelry world brings. A proper education paves the way into the industry and supports quick progress for sure. However, I would emphasize that continuous and persistent work is equally if not more important for success. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? The architectural beauty of engineered art – My architectural background influences the jewelry design in the way that the designs are often sculptural and developed in three dimensions. The gold is used as an expressive material to create cathedral-like shapes: structural elements added to artistic compositions of higher complexity that awe the eye and mind. And precious stones are seen as an integral part of the design that can be molded and formed as a colorful embellishment rather than serving as a solitaire phenomenon WHAT WAS THE FIRST PIECE OF JEWELRY YOU EVER DESIGNED? That was back in 2000 when I designed the first piece of jewelry for my mother who had back then a difficult time in her life. We got her a piece of jewelry, and there were matching but unset stones which we also took and for which I designed the setting to complete the set. So, the first piece of jewelry was a token of love for my mother. She loved it, and it made her happy – and her happiness made me happy too. This original story lives on in the brand name: Mario Uboldi Jewellery Art. It is the name of my maternal grandfather – my mother wished to be out of the spotlight. The logo is the coat of arm of the Uboldi family, a noble clan from Northern Italy. WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU WANTED TO BECOME A JEWELRY DESIGNER? As indicated, my initial jewelry pieces were very personal. This changed when a royal family member from the GCC organized a solo art exhibition with works of mine. While the exhibition focused mainly on artworks, it was important to link it to related fields – like architecture, furniture design, and jewelry. For that specific exhibition, I designed and created five collections that reflected on the same topic as the artworks shown. This event was maybe not the starting point in regards to designing jewelry but for sure the key to creating the label Mario Uboldi Jewellery Art. HOW LONG DOES IT USUALLY TAKE YOU TO CONSTRUCT A PIECE OF JEWELRY?
22 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | JUNE 2020
That depends much on the complexity of the piece and the material one works with. Pieces of the Mario Uboldi Jewellery Art collection usually take about one year. Much time is being given to the design process and research of it. Often an idea migrated from architecture where extensive reflection on a topic occurred for something different. Designs grow like a plant – they need time. They also need scrutiny and reflection. Once a design reached the stage of prototyping, technical aspects and wearability come into focus along with market-related issues. For our Uboldi Charms collections, the time from initial idea to finished product is significantly shorter – not necessarily because of the complexity of the design but because of the technical aspects and market-related topics. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS A JEWELRY DESIGNER? Mario Uboldi Jewellery Art has been exhibited in the Rietberg Museum in Zurich, a reputed art museum in Switzerland and an institution linked to the University of Art and Design in Zurich and at the luxury department store Liberty in London. We had collaborated with Rolls Royce and showcased in various art galleries in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. We are proud and honored that a few royal family members of the Middle East own Mario Uboldi Jewellery Art. WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE FASHION DESIGNERS? I am usually most intrigued by young, up and coming fashion designers – and artists for that matter – as their ideas are fresh, exploring, and usually joyful. They can capture the Zeitgeist well. The intensity and freshness often outbalance the technical refinement and the chance that its creator – not the creation – might not succeed long term. On the other hand, I also appreciate old masters as it seems the wisdom of a lifetime is consolidated in a single piece. Very interesting! The last aspect which I like in designers is if they challenge my perception and open my mind. Such work is often fascinating but not really pleasing at the same time. It is an uncomfortable attraction that suggests that I need to change or evolve my thinking or point of view. I really like that. WHERE CAN READERS BUY YOUR JEWELRY? Mario Uboldi Jewellery Art is available directly with us and best is to contact us via email: order@mariouboldi.com. Uboldi Charms is available in various stores in the GCC. Store locations can be found on our website (about – store locator). There are discussions about listings outside the Middle East – and we are

working on opening our online store under uboldicharms.com later this year – most likely third quarter. So, should you be interested in the charms, please feel free also to contact us under the above email.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ASPIRING JEWELRY DESIGNERS? Believe in yourself and pursue your passion continuously and steadily … and don’t give up!
HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AS A JEWELRY DESIGNER?
DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF AN ARTIST?
My first piece of jewelry, I designed in 2000. Fifteen years earlier, I entered the field of architecture. I still do both and it is interesting to engage in these trades in parallel. They influence each other and inspire each other across different uses, scales, and materials.
Interesting question, I never thought of myself as an artist. When I attended London Business School for an MBA, a colleague of mine told me after graduation, you are an artist. Interestingly, to me, it did not feel like a compliment, even though, he meant it as one. I now
understand where he came from and do agree with him that I have a creativity-driven mindset like an artist. Do I consider myself an artist – no, but an architect and designer.

AUTOMOBILE
2020 PORSCHE CAYENNE E-Hybrid Elevating The Luxury ExPerience To a New Level
| BY NIKITA VIVEK PAWAR
Necessity is the mother of invention. The depleting resources and the constant ever-increasing needs of the consumers have led the automobile companies to focus on renewable or alternate energy resources that do not hamper the performance or the comfort of the user. The Porsche Cayenne e-hybrid is one of the best performing and a substantial step towards eco-friendly automobiles. The time in quarantine has aided us with a lot of time to introspect and reflect on our actions and perceptions. The novel coronavirus has forced us to see things that we neglected or ignored previously. Transportation is one of the most prominent degraders of the environment has prompted the world to save our planet before it is too late. The automobile industry has shifted its gears in the right direction with incorporating electric and other less harmful alternates over fuel. Since the first car ever made in 1886, the world of cars and automobiles has undergone a rigorous make-over. Over the span of two centuries, from the most basic vehicles to smart and supercars - there’s something for every need and requirement. Porsche is one of the most renowned luxury cars manufactures. To say they have been keen on technological advancement and luxury might be an understatement. They were the first car company to initiate in the world of hybrid cars and models that struck the right balance between performance as well as luxury. The first hybrid car (a vehicle that uses two or more distinct types of power,

such as submarines that use diesel when surfaced and batteries when submerged) was designed and produced by the founder of Porsche, Ferdinand Porsche in 1900-1905 and was known as the Lohner-Porsche Mixed Hybrid. This was only the beginning of an era that would change the automobile industry forever. Almost every luxury automobile company starting hopping on the same bandwagon, from regular cars to sports cars companies created their versions of the technology. One of the proud addition to the automobile line-up of Porsche is the motorsport SUVs with a plugin e-hybrid to elevate the perception of performance and luxury. EXCEEDING THE BENCHMARK The 2019 Porsche Cayenne e-hybrid and Porsche Cayenne Turbo S e-hybrid set a benchmark for the Porsche cars in regards to design, efficiency, performance and comfort. Kick-starting the new decade with a new version of the Cayenne the ridiculously powerful 541-hp seemed to now be the beta dog. The 2020 versions skip the 335hp turbocharged 3.0-litre V-6 for a better 4.0-litre V-8 while the Turbo S hybrid uses the 541-hp twin-turbo V-8. Ripping to 0 mph in mere 3.2 seconds, this beast of a car covers a quarter-mile time of 11.5 seconds at 121 mph, crowning itself to be the quickest SUV in comparison with Lamborghini Urus, Tesla Model X and Mercedes-Benz GLC63 S Coupe.

There are six driving modes available in both the variants: E-Power operates on electricity alone; E-Charge simultaneously charges the battery and powers the car, E-Hold maintains the battery’s current state of charge for use later, Hybrid Auto utilizes both the engine and electric motor, and Sport and Sport Plus focus all systems on performance and keep the gas engine on and ready. The unique 21-inch wheels, body-colour wheel-arch extensions, and polarizing Acid Green paint for the brake callipers are constant. The 2020 Porsche Cayenne Coupe e-hybrid On the same day, Porsche announced the Turbo S E-Hybrid variant of its standard Cayenne in a sleeker and more chic or car-like version, the Cayenne Coupe. This stylish version does not compromise of any element. Powered by a 3.0-litre V6 with an electric motor sandwiched between the engine and its standard eight-speed automatic transmission and The 455 horsepower and 516 pound-feet torque makes it a cakewalk for the car to hit 0 miles per hour in just 4.7 seconds. The Cayenne Coupe e-hybrid comes with 14.1kWh battery. While its stronger sibling, the Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo S e-hybrid uses the beefier 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 making it easy for the achieve 60 mph takes just 3.6 seconds, and the top speed is bumped up to 183 mph. Porsche’s carbon-ceramic brakes, adaptive dampers and torque vectoring carry the legacy ahead. The eight-way power sport seats, a fixed glass panoramic roof and 20-inch alloy wheels only add into the style quotient of this potent automobile. Though sleek and moving away from the traditional SUV design, the Cayenne Coupe still rides on the same wheelbase, hence there is no effect on the legroom of cabin storage. The 12.3inch infotainment touchscreen, on-board Wi-Fi, Apple CarPlay and the dual-zone automatic climate control along with the eight-way power-adjustable seats create a sporty environment for all the passengers. There are other additional features to choose from like a louder sport exhaust and rear-axle steering. The seats can be outfitted in a classic Porsche hound’s tooth pattern cloth or the standard 10-speaker stereo can be replaced by either a 14-speaker Bose setup or a 21-speaker Burmester 3D High-End system, and other exciting features can be customised into the car. Bespoke activities like the Exclusive Manufaktur program is available with the Coupe as well. Cars like the Porsche Cayenne series are the future of automobiles and transportation where striking the right balance between luxury, technology, performance and efficiency becomes a crucial aspect of judgement.

PULSE CONCEPT EMBRAER‘S NEW FLYING CAR CONCEPT
| BY JARONE ASHKENAZI
B
razilian aerospace conglomerate Embraer is looking back in television history to look forward in terms of transportation. Famed series The Jetsons brought the personalized driving to flying concept to the masses, and now the strikingly bold Pulse Concept allows passengers to go from self-driving vehicles to aircraft.
To celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary, the company decided to look ahead to what autonomous driving and flight would look like in 50 years. As such, they designed a concept vehicle, more a transportation vessel, which allows passengers seamlessly to transition from land to air, all in the safety of its glass pod. The transparent pod is a concept based on designers’ thoughts of the future in glass technology and the potential breakthrough of seethrough alloy materials. Stylish and elegant in design, the eVTOL aircraft and land vehicle evoke the ethos of flight in the 1950s with a stunning space-
age edge. So passengers never have to leave the protective environment of the pod, the futuristic pod on the ground is the cockpit for the unmanned self-driving car while allowing for vertical takeoff and landing aircraft from any location when wanting to fly. Providing a 360-degree view of the world around in the pod, it also is designed to feature displays for riders to be entertained, work, and communicate on whatever journey they are on. The forward-thinking company which launched Embraer X, the first electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft concept in 2018, is looking ahead towards 2070 with this concept transportation system. Embraer’s Pulse is the first-ever aerospace concept car, and it takes inspiration from Harley Earl’s Buick Y-Job from 1938, the first-ever concept car. It will extend air travel beyond airports with bird-like capabilities for door-to-door service between destinations in its range.

Celebrating ART + NATURE | BY TRACY BEARD

ARCHITECTURE
Nestled into Santa Monica Canyon, this residence seamlessly fits into its wooded locale while serving as a backdrop for a world-class art collection.
O
rganic architecture experts Kristopher Conner and James Perry of Conner + Perry Architects were commissioned by a deeply-rooted Los Angeles couple to design a home that seamlessly fits their family and lifestyle, while also showcasing a worldclass art collection and effortlessly blending into a beloved section of Santa Monica Canyon. Taking cues from the property’s surrounding Oak and Eucalyptus trees, the firm designed a residence that allows for reflection, openness, and serenity. Key design features include windows that frame the magnificent trees, extended canopy-like, cantilevered eaves, and fully pocketing glass exterior walls that open to a central courtyard to offer the perfect balance of indoor-outdoor living. Every view in the house was designed to captivate with either nature or art. Initial plans by John Lautner protégé, architect Duncan Nicholson, set the stage for Kris and James, formerly with Nicholson’s office, to complete and enhance the project, despite his untimely passing. Given their love for the neighborhood and its majestic trees, the clients sought to repurpose the felled Eucalyptus wood found on the property into outdoor furniture and key elements within the house, including the grand entry doors. In keeping, exterior materials for the new home were selected for their organic nature, ability to age in place, and compatibility with the climate, such as charred wood siding (Shou Sugi Ban), copper, exposed steel, and concrete. Interior materials were chosen to reflect the nature outside, including a mix of massangis grey limestone and french oak for the flooring, weathered brass, blackened steel elements, and a variety of marbles and tiles, including art tiles by Lubna Chowdhary. For the clients, who both grew up in the neighborhood, the chance to collaborate on the design process and build a space for their impressive art collection was a dream. For Conner + Perry, the home represents exactly what the clients were seeking — a quintessential California indoor/outdoor experience where everything feels open and unified. “Each of them has described the house as having a magical or mystical quality, allowing light in at the right moments, as well as the shadows of the trees, and a calming mirroring effect,” says principal, Kristopher Conner.

fibonacci electric catamaran | BY JARONE ASHKENAZI
E
nvisioning the future of transportation, Turin’s Icona Design excites consumers through creating cutting-edge styling and design in a multitude of verticals, including automotive, mobility, and product. Inspired by “the numbers of nature,” this stunning and asymmetrical new electric catamaran by Icona Design looks like a floating piano.
The Fibonacci electric catamaran is a 54foot concept yacht, the first yacht design from the studio. It is named after Fibonacci, the famed Italian mathematician of the Middle Ages, who discovered the Fibonacci sequence – which in simple terms applies a series of numbers that can be applied to geometries nature. The chief nod to the sequence is the ornamental staircases on the sides, giving the yacht a dramatic look, which provides access to the flying upper deck and the helm. With an overall shape that looks like a seashell, the compact yacht most defining characteristic is it’s the hardtop that lifts to expose the fly deck. Resembling a grand piano, this design feature is truly special to the Fibonacci and is a remarkable func-
tional feature. Its main deck offers ocean views through its open-space salon from fore and aft. Two en-suite guest cabins come standards, the owner may opt for three, the yacht is also equipped to hold a small tender between the two hulls. Building off its ethos of cutting-edge design and the Icona Design’s award-winning Icona Nucleus, its autonomous concept vehicle, Fibonacci, can be seen as a futuristic transport vessel on the water. Together with established companies already in the yachting space, Hydrotec, Terra Modena Mechatronic, and ASG Power, they combined to create a platform that can be adapted to multiple yacht designs. Conceived as a day boat more than one for ocean crossings or even extended cruising, the yacht is aimed to attract the younger millennial yachters out there and powered by a pair of 200-kilowatt (270-hp) electric motors suitable for about 12 hours on the water and 12 of lounging about. A max range of 150 miles with a cruising speed at 10 knots with charging as fast as 20 minutes according to the company.

SIMPLY MALLORCA GOLF | ANGELA SARA WEST
F
rom air steward to golf consultant, this London-born Brit quit his high-flying job with British Airways to realize his dream of living on the luxury island of Mallorca. With championship golf courses a-go-go, this stunning Spanish hotspot also boasts action sports aplenty, along with glamourous spas and wellbeing retreats, wine tasting apps, and designer shops for non-playing partners, too.
visited in 1976 with my parents,” he tells me. “I made friends here and it’s always had a bit of a draw.” So much so that Mark quit the rat race in May 2004 to make a permanent move here, taking on the role of team manager with Thomson Holidays.
Angela Sara West chats with Mark Showler about his life and award-winning golf business venture on this idyllic isle, how to up your game, high-end hotels to rest your head after around, and finds out where you can find a famous face or two on the fairway!
In February 2005, inspiration intervened and he and a friend decided to set up Mark’s own golfing holiday business, Simply Mallorca Golf, arranging bespoke packages for British golf fans.
Mark tees off, watching his ball soar down the impeccable fairway at stunning Club de Golf Alcanada. With the enticing Mediterranean sea sparkling through fragrant olive and pine trees, this is his favorite course to play. Although he loved his job as Customer Services Manager at British Airways, he’s now undeniably in his element here in Mallorca, having established a thriving business offering value-for-money, tailor-made golf packages on this accessible island, which has become an important landmark on the golf tourism circuit. As cabin crew on long-haul, Mark visited fabulous places worldwide. But Mallorca is the place that has always held a special place in his heart... “I first 38 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | JUNE 2020

Given his love of the game, coupled with his background in travel and customer service, it was a natural business choice. Mark says Mallorca and golf made the ideal match. “I absolutely adore Mallorca and have been interested in golf since taking lessons as a teenager. I love its outdoor appeal and wanted to promote the high-quality courses here, providing great holidays, too!” Since its inauguration, Simply Mallorca Golf has gone from strength-to-strength, regularly selling over 10,000 rounds of golf per year and outperforming other golf agents at many of the island’s courses. The company won the prestigious accolade of ‘Top Selling Golf Tour Operator’ at Mallorca’s largest golf resort in 2018, and Mark is proud to have played an important part in making Mallorca

one of Europe’s premier golfing holiday destinations. GOLFER’S PARADISE Over 300 days of sunshine a year and some of the world’s best and most challenging courses over a variety of terrain make Mallorca an all-year-round golfer’s paradise. Wisely investigating business opportunities elsewhere, Mark island-hopped around all the Spanish Balearic and Canary islands before opting to carve out a career here. “Knowing the island so well, it felt comfortable and homely. It’s only two hours from London, with a good, year-round climate.
“Whilst we can’t ensure that it doesn’t rain, it is unlikely, offering a fantastic 360 playable golfing days a year!” ORANGES & LEMONS Initially, Mark rented a Finca, which was the former residence of the ex-vicar of sleepy Son Servera, a typical Mallorquín village in the northeast of the island close to the coastal resort of Cala Millor. Along with religious artifacts, the land surrounding the Finca boasted orange and lemon trees and Mark enjoyed growing his own vegetables, too. “You can’t eat nine trees’ worth of oranges, so I made marmalade!”
He’s now invested in a two-bedroom, groundfloor, traditional apartment with a terrace area in Cala Ratjada, just 15 minutes away from the famous European Love Island’ villa. Situated in the ‘Square of the Fishermen’, his Cala Ratjada residence was originally occupied by fisherfolk. “Our home is very traditional Mallorquín in terms of the furnishings and décor, so the aim is to try to modernize it a bit. At certain times of the year, you can still see the fishermen repairing their nets down the main street, so it’s got a lot of local character and there’s a real local feel to it. There are no other English people in development. There’s one German couple and the rest are all Mallorquín or Spanish.”

Mark enjoys participating in local fiestas, varying from religious to agricultural, and particularly loves partaking in one of the biggest parties on the island, the Nit de Foc, where devils maraud through the streets breathing fire, setting off firecrackers and lighting fireworks. Does he now feel fully-integrated? “I almost feel like a local. I knew I was accepted a few Christmases ago when the neighbors had a matanza, pig-killing. I awoke to the sad and sorrowful screams of their pig meeting its maker and was later offered a sobrasada, sausage. I’d rather it was still running around the garden but had I declined, they’d have been deeply offended.” TEEING OFF THE COMPANY In establishing Simply Mallorca Golf, Mark spoke to every course director, hotelier, and property provider in the area. “I spent eight months working in a variety of positions in the local tourist trade, enabling me to make important contacts whilst allowing time to research the business. The courses are keen to promote golf to the British market and, therefore, mostly welcomed me with open arms.” Mark’s small team initially included the daughter of a flamenco dancer, key in helping Mark source new properties available to rent.
Aiming to respond to quote requests within hours, the company prides itself on impeccable service, offering a variety of packages to suit all budgets and individual needs. “Whatever your requirements, we can provide for them.” The business has flourished most years, covering more and more areas of Mallorca as it grows, and now boasts contracts with every single course. “We’re attracting clients from all around the world, including America, Australia, and Korea. The Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and German markets are strong, and German-speaking clients now have their own dedicated website where inquiries are handled in their own language by Ricarda, the latest addition to the Simply Mallorca Golf team, who has a fantastic knowledge of golf.” WHERE TO PLAY With championship courses galore, golf lovers are spoilt for choice on the island. With over 20 existing courses, several have been designed by renowned golf course architects, including Jack Nicklaus, John D. Harris and Robert Trent Jones Sr and Jr. Pula has hosted the PGA Mallorca Classic, while Son Gual hosts tournaments such as the European Seniors Tour, organized by companies including Rolex, Son Melià and Pinmar. Mallorca recently won the contract to host the European Challenge Tour Grand Final until

2022, following its six-year spell in the Middle East, seeing the Challenge Tour Grand Final return to European soil for the first time since 2012. The four-year deal between the Challenge Tour and the Federación Balear de Golf sees the Grand Final move to a different venue on the island each year. Starting at scenic Alcanada, the Tour’s season-ending Grand Final tournament 2019 took place last November, as the final stop on the newly-named ‘Road to Mallorca’. What’s more, it offered a whoppiprize fund of €420,000, making it one of the most lucrative events of the season. So, there’s everything to play for! The venue for the 2020 Grand Final will be T-Golf Poniente, or T-Golf as it is now known. A golfer’s dream, the 18-hole championship course at Golf de Andratx, meanwhile, is one of the most outstandingly-designed and technically-demanding courses in the whole of the Mediterranean. Boasting four par fives and seven ponds, the 609-metre ‘Green Monster’ (No. 6, par 5) is the longest hole in Spain and regarded as a highlight for even the most accomplished golfer. The signature 6th hole plays uphill, with each shot entailing meticulous navigation of bunkers and water hazards towards the next hole. Thankfully, there’s no need to wait until the ‘19th hole’ for a much-needed pit-stop here, as the Halfway House awaits at the end of the spectacular 8th hole, offering an oasis of calm with views across the beautiful bay of Camp de Mar from the

large tree-lined terrace, where you’re served up typical tapas washed down with a refreshing beverage before tackling the ten final holes. SIMPLY PLAY! Simply Mallorca Golf initially concentrated on the northeast of the island and was the first British company to solely promote golf in that area. “With so many great courses in such a relatively small area, I couldn’t understand why more British people weren’t visiting,” Mark explains. “To find good courses you have to travel, and traditionally, the British golfing market stays and plays in and around Palma. The northeast area’s ideal for golfers wanting to play the best courses away from the mass tourism and busy courses of the south. It’s tranquilo, calmer, more laid-back, and unspoiled with some real, hidden gems.” He has helped enormously in putting the northeast firmly on the golfing map, promoting excellent courses, along with great golf accommodation, facilities, pro shops, and tuition. But Mark has also made his mark all over the island, and is hugely influential in other areas, too. The ‘must-play’ courses? “Alcanada, Son Gual, Son Muntaner, and T-Golf & Country Club. But if you’re looking to stay in one area and have a choice from four great courses, then I would recommend visiting the northeast of the island, and playing Canyamel, Capdepera, Pula, and Son Servera.“ HIGH-QUALITY GOLFING ADVENTURES Looking to play around? Look no further than Simply Mallorca Golf, who are on hand to discuss all 19 of the island’s 18-hole golf courses in-depth, and help you decide on the one for you! Mark and his business partner, Tracy, cater to their clients’ preferences, offering advice, and saving you time and money, creating a personalized package to suit all your requirements. “For example, if you don’t like courses where buggies must be kept to the paths, then we’ll only offer courses 41 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | JUNE 2020

where they can be driven on the fairways. We’ll help you to schedule your itinerary so that you can take advantage of the best offers, and obtain the tee-times that you favor.” The company is a member of IAGTO (International Association of Golf Tour Operators), the global trade organization for the golf tourism industry. “This further demonstrates and emphasizes our commitment to providing a quality product and service for all golfers on, or visiting, the island of Mallorca,” says Mark. “A lot of the work that our customers don’t see is the effort we put into ensuring our clients have a great golfing experience. We survey all of our customers, and the feedback we receive is relayed back to the Director of the golf courses so that the service experience of our clientele can be enhanced.” The team’s expert knowledge means they can answer your queries quickly and confidently. “Your time is valuable, and you shouldn’t have
to spend it researching your holiday!” says Mark. Contact the team, and they’ll suggest courses, luxury hotels and transport options to match any requirement or budget you have in mind, making them a one-stop-shop for booking a golfing holiday tailored uniquely to you. “We want to ensure that golfers have a brilliant time playing the game in Mallorca, and that’s at the heart of everything we do. We love what we do, and as a small agency, we want you to play some great golf and enjoy your holiday. You’re not just another golfer to us!” WHEN TO PLAY & WHERE TO STAY “Spring and autumn are the best times of the year to play,” Mark advises. “In spring, the courses are in great condition, and in autumn, the temperatures have dropped sufficiently to enable you to play golf in the sun without

gasping for a beer by the time you reach the 19th!” Some of the best golf courses in Mallorca can get fully booked up to six months in advance. “So, we advise to always plan ahead, and book early.” From high-end boutique hotels and deluxe apartments to agritourism properties and luxury villas, there are more choices close to perfectly-manicured greens than you can swing your club at. When it comes to great golf accommodation, you’ll never find yourself more than a short putt away from a fairway! Mark recommends checking in to Creu de Tau Art & Spa, a beautiful 4-star superior hotel in a restored historic convent close to the course in Capdepera, the brand new Hotel Pleta de Mar, a 5-star luxury establishment surrounded by nature and overlooking the sea, boasting not one, but two, infinity pools, a spa and a private path to a small beach, or the magnificent Park Hyatt nestled in the Canyamel
GOLF
valley, a luxury retreat with references of local art and cultural heritage, reflecting the style of a traditional Mallorquín hilltop village. “We think that Canyamel is one of Mallorca’s hidden gems!” reveals Mark. “It’s just starting to be developed and, within a few years, I think this area is going to be completely different. There are some excellent restaurants and new hotels in the northeast area, along with four excellent golf courses with a range of difficulty and terrains, enabling you to select the courses that best match your tastes.” CELEBRITY GOLFERS Immaculate fairways, prestigious marinas, and the island’s colorful cosmopolitan capital, Palma, also draw the rich and famous to this year-round golfing getaway, with celebrities and golf pros, including David Beckham, Seve Ballesteros, and TV stars, frequently spotted teeing off on the island’s championship courses. Jack Nicholson, Nigel Mansell,
Claudia Schiffer, Jasper Carrott and Prince Andrew, and Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have all played at Real Golf de Bendinat, while tennis ace Boris Becker swaps his racket for clubs at Golf Club Andratx. And tennis might be the island’s own resident champ Rafael Nadal’s first love, but golf, it seems, comes a close second for the Manacor-born tennis star, who can often be seen showing off his skills at many of the island’s courses. Alternatively, follow in the famous footsteps of Ian Woosnam, Sam Torrance and Mark James at Son Gual, praised by the pro golfers when practicing their swing here. Such high-profile role models have helped open up the game to a new generation of players, and its elitist image is fast disappearing. Along with its celebrity appeal, golf is attracting a new market, drawing a younger and cooler following.
As for the future of the golf industry on the island, Marks says it’s definitely going upmarket. “Many courses are pricing their rounds at over 150€ per person, and they have to deliver on quality. With numerous new boutique hotels springing up, Mallorca is appearing on the radar for US travelers as a luxury destination now, too.” WELLBEING BENEFITS OF THE GREEN Sunshine and golf make a great combination, providing a powerful tool known for improving both physical and mental health. According to the World Health Organization, access to green spaces has a positive impact on mental health, and, alongside also offering a wealth of physical health benefits, the game can give your confidence a boost, too. To top it all off, playing around can sharpen the memory and prevent cognitive decline. 43 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | JUNE 2020
GOLF
Mark also ensured that they switched from being a UK company to a Spanish company 10 years ago. “Registering everything in the UK was the quickest way for us to start trading, but added complications. You must fit in and conform. Appreciate that it’s not your country, respect local traditions and do things THEIR way.” TOP OF THE PROPS Sensibly keeping one foot in the UK with a home he owns in West End in Surrey in the UK, he’s just purchased a second property in ?? to rent out, with plans to sell one of the two in around five years’ time and to, hopefully, be able to live mortgage-free in both the UK and Spain in the future. “It will be great to be able to travel between the two whenever I want.” “Even in winter, the light quality’s so good that where I used to feel depressed in the UK, I don’t here,” says Mark. “The health benefits of golf are well documented, and I now cycle to work, too. I thought the other evening on my way home that, years ago, I’d have been stuck on the M25 from Heathrow, with a two-hour minimum drive, whereas now I’m cycling home through the beautiful countryside!” Mark has also joined a hiking group in the historic village of Valldemossa, close to where Michael Douglas owns a stunning estate. “The views are amazing!” says Mark. PAMPER TIME FOR GOLF WIDOWS Golf widow? While your other half ’s off enjoying around, why not splash out on a session at a spa? Most of the island’s 5-star hotels have luxurious pampering spaces, and with wellness tourism on-the-up on the island, yoga and health retreats are on the rise. For the more adventurous, cycling is huge here, and canoeing and tennis are also popular activities. Alternatively, adrenaline junkies can survey the island from a unique perspective with paragliding or hang gliding lesson, or take to the skies with a hot-air balloon ride. Simply Mallorca Golf can assist with helicopter charter, too! With well over 50 vineyards on the island, wine tasting is yet another appetizing option. Not forgetting the fabulous shopping! Give your credit card a workout at the bountiful boutiques and designer stores in the glittering capital, Palma, and at prestigious ports while your partner’s playing a game of golf – all par for the course, of course! Most towns on the island have a weekly market, too. “Artà’s market, on Tuesdays, is one of the best in the area and well worth visiting,” recommends Mark.
Kids in tow? For young golfers, there are plenty of activities on offer, including numerous opportunities to follow in their father’s golfing footsteps at the island’s many mini-golf offerings. LEARNING THE LINGO The main challenges for Mark in setting up his business? “One of the biggest challenges was being accepted, which was difficult when my level of Spanish at that time was initially poor,” he explains. “Hoteliers and golf courses have seen so many people arrive and request contracts, but then fail to bring customers, so the first contracts that we had with the golf courses, in particular, were really poor. But once they saw that we were bringing customers, paying our bills promptly and conducting our business in a competent manner, our contracts and our terms of business improved. I can understand why they did that, but when you’re starting a new business, it’s a challenge not being able to compete on price with more established businesses.” TOP TIPS FOR A TOP BUSINESS Thinking about setting up a business on the island? Mark stresses the importance of taking financial and legal advice. “Tax rates and licenses required to run a business can be so different in a foreign country, and sometimes rules and regulations don’t function in the way that we’re familiar with in the UK. Sometimes, they don’t even seem to make sense! The main thing is to appreciate that there is a cultural difference in Spain, and the faster you can adjust to that and respect the way that people function and work, then the faster you and your business will be successful.”
44 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | JUNE 2020
How’s the property market in Mallorca looking now – are things hotting up over here, too? “I sense it’s an interesting time to buy property on the island. For a while, the building industry stalled, but we’re now seeing new developments in a number of different resorts in the northeast. I particularly like the Canyamel valley, where there are some magnificent villas and new apartments springing up. Regular overseas’ visitors with holiday homes tend to migrate to the resorts west of Palma, such as Andratx, Santa Ponsa, and Portals Nous, but Canyamel is only an hour away from Palma and its airport. With beautiful countryside and neighboring towns with hillside castles, the area offers an image of a quieter and less-developed Mallorca that many people are searching for.” Mark says he had been contemplating getting ahead of the game and snapping up a Canyamel home. “I was considering buying in Canyamel before prices go crazy!” he says. But his love of Cala Ratjada has tugged at his heartstrings, and he’s now decided to stay put. With his new property plans in the works, Mark’s making massive changes to his Mallorcan abode. “This property is rather tired, so I’m planning to completely gut, re-wire, knock down walls and refurbish it, hopefully in the winter of this year.” Luckily, the purchase of his well-appointed apartment here was problem-free. “I was amazed at what it was like in comparison to the UK, where it can be really difficult and there’s a greater degree of checks on your ability to repay the mortgage and so on.” He says it’s a completely different story here, where the bank does a lot of the work on your behalf. “It would probably be different if it had been in the countryside, with access rights, provision of water and electricity, etc. but because it’s a simple property, it was a simple process. From start to finish, it took just
GOLF
six weeks. That’s including finding the property to actually moving in!” His tips for readers thinking about buying a property on the island? “It’s definitely cheaper if you buy direct and cut out the estate agent, but the benefits of using an agent include superb advice and being assisted throughout the whole purchase process. They instruct the bank, and that makes everything really simple. So, pick a good one who speaks English, as they can save you a lot of time and money.” UPPING YOUR GAME What does Mark love most about life in Mallorca? “Although I’ve been coming here for nearly 50 years, I still like exploring and discovering new places. I love the culture, fantastic beaches, dining out, and Palma, a beautiful city, touted as the new Barcelona.” And, of course, there’s golf. “I play whenever I get a chance. As any golfer will tell you, it’s not all about the game; golf ’s about relaxation, being in the open, enjoying the scenery, and also the social side of playing around with complete strangers or having a chilled glass of Rioja on the terrace after a great round with friends. Being involved in the sport on both sides, from practicing and improving my game to promoting it, is a dream come true!” Mark recently met up with a mentor, Seán Herron, who has helped take his game to a
whole new level. “Seán trains golf in a completely different way to the way that the PGA pros teach. He’s also a transformational breath coach, which is an interesting field in itself! I do still miss a night out in London, my UK friends and visiting a proper UK pub, but apart from that, little else! People are booking earlier, which means that the more popular courses are already very busy during the second peak period of the year, which is September/ October. STRAND HOTEL | BY KEVIN PILLEY
I
n 1901, Queen Victoria and Verdi died, US President McKinlay was assassinated, Gillette was founded, and Rangoon’s famous Strand Hotel opened. It quickly became not only the landmark of Burma ( now Myanmar) and the city ( now Yangon ) but a symbol of British colonialism. However, it was built by two Armenian brothers, Aviet and Tigran Sarkie, who had opened the Eastern & Oriental in Penang in 1884 and the Raffles Hotel in Singapore, three years later. Blue-plaque now by the Yangon Heritage Trust, the three-story, all-suite colonnaded Strand has had to move with the times. It was revamped in 1990. The headboards are original teak, windows are still teak framed, and floors kept glaringly polished. No longer, however, do guests chase bats around the rooms with tennis racquets. The mice and rats (although always very well turned out ) have gone, and there is now one pool table and not six billiard tables over which your official marker once removed twig insects, gaudy moths, and grasshoppers from the baize before your attempted cannon. The pahits( gin and bitters) and stengahs (whiskey and water ) may have gone, and solar topees, white drill, and colonial administrator’s knee socks now low on the ground, but the downtown Strand is getting known again. What was once widely considered “The best hostelry east of Suez” has recently
588 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | JUNE 2020
been voted “The Best Honeymoon Hotel in Asia” and “Best Romantic Atmosphere in Asia.” The historic Strand is now owned by a group of investors and managed by “Gap Hospitality.” Its sister properties are “The Strand Cruise” ( offering 3-5 night sailings along the Irrawaddy or Elephant River from Mandalay to Bagan ), “Yangon G Hotel” and Inya Lake Hotel. The Strand still offers “unsurpassed catering and comfort,” and its 24 /7 butlers still deem your room key to heavy for your to hold, let alone carry and will run to get to the door before you do. To spare the unnecessary exertion of opening and closing the door yourself. The Jolly Brothers and the Harmonists may have been replaced by piped Ella and easy listening flute musak, but the rattan chairs are still comfortable. The lacquered ceiling fans still whir as you enjoy sundowner cocktail (now Bagan Breeze-, Strand Sours, and Strand Slings ) in Sarkies Bar or traditional Myanamese fish soup breakfast with plantain fritters in the stylish high-windowed Strand Café. Burmese Shan tea is still served the old way, with condensed and evaporated milk. Your $20 high tea can be Myanmar ( rice dumplings with palm sugar, brown pea pancakes, pandan ( the fragrant plant) with coconut agar- red algae seaweed ) or slightly less occidental ( Financier filled with salted caramel, chocolate lava, rose water and lychee macaroon and raspberry mini éclair)

Over the road, in the shadow of a bridge, Mrs. Chun is the proprietress of the nearest “Oet Si Phat” pork crackling stand. Around her, others fritter okra and eggplants in pressed peanut oil, offering funky faloodah, pickled tea leaf salads-, Zi Kyet noodles, and spooning sticky jiggery rice onto palm leaves. In the small market by the old wharf of old Rangoon, they still sell hairy fruit, pig part bamboo skewers, and watermelon juice. But the children now have soccer shirts and south Korean film star haircuts. Back in the nostalgic Strand, its $6 for a bottle of Evian and a week’s local wages for a bottle of Myanmar Monsoon Valley Shiraz. In the capital of the former pariah state of Myanmar, you can enjoy French Chef de Cuisine Xavier Fauvel’s $54 three-course a la carte dinner with wine pairings, finishing with imported cheeseboard. The hotel’s first chef was a pupil of Escoffier, and lobster was the signature dish. Now you choose between crab tartare, lobster spinach ravioli, roast river prawn bisque, aoli-steamed fish, mango Pavlova, and Hennessey XO. These days The Strand has a swimming pool, fitness studio, and a spa, eccentrically of-fering neck and bust firming along with the ritual of a $20 afternoon tea. The Strand is now more boutique than grand. But always a must place to visit or stay. For $10 an hour, Mr. Hla Htay’s person people-carrier is available to take you to see the Shwedagon pagoda, temples, churches, and the Secretariat building- the Victorian-colonial architectural masterpiece, and former seat of the British administration in Burma.
Which now has a KFC. He’ll take you to Scott’s market and help you haggle over a shirt, longyi sarong or a parrot. And direct you to the local currency exchange shop where authorized money changer Mr. Victor will show you his collection of old coins, and banknotes including a pre-war “nickers” (£1) and a Benjamin Franklin dollar with a misprint. He’ll also buy your 200 kyats ( chat) ticket on Yangon’s Circular Railway, which allows you to spend three hours and thirty cents seeing the sights and traveling into the paddy fields. At the same time, vendors tempt you with quail eggs, shred cauliflowers in front of you and try and set the record for carrying the most bananas and melons on your head in a moving train. There may be no Uncle George, the master of flowers, or a post office anymore, but it’s good to get back to the forever-cool Strand, be bowed at by Mr Ko Saw the doorman and see Miss Lu Lu’s beaming face as she alerts your butler- in our case, Ko Win Hlaing Soe - to our return so he can bring ys the paper to read about the local watermelon glut or to ring the barman at Sarkies, formerly a bakery and stables for the Japanese army, to order us a reviving tincture or restorative in a highball. To toast the day passing and those ahead. And the times when The Strand required ladies to wear the national dress for dinner. You may also permit yourself to feel a little sad that no one seems to know how to tie a half-decent cravate any more. And rue – very briefly – that all prices are subject to 5% government tax and 10% service charge. www.hotelthegrand.com ends

Situated on the eastern boundary of Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe, Chikwenya enjoys a rich Wilderness Safaris history as one of the first camps in the region. A photographer’s paradise, Chikwenya overlooks the open floodplain and the broad Zambezi River, with a backdrop provided by the mountains of the Rift Valley escarpment. Chikwenya’s seven tents (including two family units) stand on low wooden decks with pine walkways linking them to the raised main area. The lounge, dining and bar area are places of hospitality and relaxation, with a pool and deck offering alternate spaces to enjoy the scenery and passing wildlife. Game is plentiful with large concentrations of buffalo and elephant, the latter standing on their hind legs to reach for whatever is left of the albida fruits when the season comes to an end, which serve as sustenance for the pachyderms during the dry season with these protein-rich pods. Predators such as lion, African wild dog, leopard and cheetah are often sighted.
In between a variety of activities, the camp’s main area offers shady spaces to sit back and enjoy the spectacular scenery and passing wildlife. Greater kudu, Burchell’s zebra, impala, warthog and common waterbuck can be seen on the surrounding plains and the grunting of hippo can be heard all day. Birdlife is superb, with numerous local specials like collared palmthrush and racket-tailed roller. Guests can try their hand at catch-and-release fishing – imagine hooking a tigerfish as you drift down the Zambezi. Enjoy a walk in the woods, while experiencing Africa on foot – along the Zambezi River, amongst the riverine vegetation and under the shady trees. NamibRand Reserve, Namibia Natural Selection opened their latest Namibian property, Kwessi Dunes, on the 1st March 2020. The new property is set in the vast 531,000 acre NamibRand Nature Reserve, with easy access to Sossusvlei’s iconic rusty red sand dunes and the photogenic Deadvlei. The NamibRand is a vast place of awe-inspiring beauty. One of the largest private reserves in southern Africa, it was the vision of Namibian farmer Albi Bruckner in the 1980s and was created from the integration of several livestock farms and the removal of the fences which divided the land. The barbed wire Bruckner removed was long enough to stretch from Cape Town to Windhoek. The result was a protected wilderness area that today is a model of conservation success. For Natural Selection, it was the perfect location for their sixth Namibian property. When Kwessi Dunes opened on the 1st March, it brought Natural Selection’s low-key style and quirkiness to southern Namibia. The twelve thatch and canvas rooms measure 948 sq ft
inside and out, and feature vintage four-poster beds, striped canvas walls and a beautiful map mural feature wall. Each bedroom has an ensuite bathroom with both indoor and outdoor showers and a shaded, outdoor veranda. High thatched roofs and air-conditioning will keep guests cool during the hot desert days. The rooms at Kwessi Dunes really come into their own after the sun sets. Each room has been designed with a special “star gazer” room and every night there is the option to sleep outside, under the African night sky. In 2012 the NamibRand Nature Reserve was selected by the International Dark Sky Association as an official dark sky reserve on account of its low light pollution and cloudless night skies. It is one of the best places on earth to star gaze and enjoy spending the night under a canopy of twinkling stars. The guides at Kwessi Dunes will help guests to tell their Southern Cross from their Orion’s Belt but if that all feels like too much hard work then counting shooting stars is a wonderful way to fall asleep.

The park is a haven for chimpanzees — introduced as part of groundbreaking rehabilitation project in the 1960s — as well as elephants, giraffes, hippos, shy sitatunga antelopes and 300 species of birds. The pristine Rubondo Island is 75 percent forest, which guests can explore on drives and walks while learning about the animals and plants that make up this extraordinary protected ecosystem. Wake up to the serene lake views from your beachfront cottage and enjoy catch-andrelease-fishing the massive Nile perch and tilapia that dwell in the surrounding waters in the afternoon. Meals at Rubondo Island Camp are served al fresco on the main deck overlooking the beach, where you can relax with your
toes in the sand. Spend afternoons in a hammock, binoculars and bird guide in hand or cooling off in the pool. As the sun sets, watch hippos emerge from the water to graze on the grass around camp. All of the food is homemade, including breads, cakes, biscuits and sorbets. Breakfast is served on the deck overlooking the lake. Lunch is a light buffet (if you are a keen cook, join the chef for a class that doubles as lunch prep). Sip sundowners around the campfire on the beach, after which guests can enjoy a communal dinner under the stars. There are many things to do at Rubondo, with activities on both land and water, focused on learning about the remarkable ecosystem. Have a once-in-a-lifetime experience helping habituate the island’s chimpanzee population. As you walk through the forest tracking their progress with a knowledgeable guide, you will likely hear them calling to each other and they’ll hear you. TULUDI CAMP
Okavango Delta, Botswana July 2019 saw the opening of Natural Selection’s most luxurious camp yet, Tuludi in the game rich Khwai Private Reserve in the northern reaches of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Tuludi’s seven tree-house-esque tents sit on the edge of a vast flood plain, with expansive views of the wilderness ahead, including the camp’s very own hippo pod. Tuludi’s design is a whimsical reflection of the Okavango; its creatures, colors and bird life. Each of the seven tents covers an impressive 645 sq ft with king size or twin beds, lounge area and dressing room. The textiles are by Ardmore, one of South-Africa’s most famous design studios. Well known for their playful, bold designs; their bush inspired textiles featuring leopards, monkeys and crocodiles are the perfect choice for Tuludi. Handmade chandeliers featuring dip dyed rings of high thorn and jacaranda wood hang from the roof. Each room has its own bespoke piece of art featuring the flora and fauna of Tuludi by artist Sarah Kelly.
The space outside is as important as inside at Tuludi and each suite has a spacious deck, complete with a hanging chair for lazy afternoons. The private plunge pool in each suite is the perfect place to wallow on a warm afternoon. The bathrooms offer the best of both worlds, with inside double vanities and an outdoor shower and bath – with views of the bush ahead. The main area is dominated by a handmade, mosaic tiled bar. Again, a whimsical depiction of life in the Okavango, it was made by the award-winning artist Sarah Pryke of Fragments of Africa and features the iconic birds and mammals of the area. A lilac breasted roller swoops above a hippo who is keeping out of the way of a thirsty leopard. From the bar a selection of South Africa’s finest wines are served as well as a range of craft beers and artisan gins served with premium tonic waters. The camp’s best kept secret though is most certainly the tree top library. Set high up in the

If this all sounds a bit too serious for a holiday, then enjoy the quirky slide which links the library back down to the ground and is fun for both children and adults. Meals at Tuludi are home cooked and hearty and served a la carte, with flexible and varied menus to suit all tastes. From freshly baked pastries to a cooked breakfast spread, brunch is a relaxed experience after a morning game drive. Dinner is an a la carte affair, served under the stars and all meals feature fresh, home-made goods from jams and juices to smoothies and sorbets. ABELANA RIVER LODGE HOEDSPRUIT, SOUTH AFRICA
It takes unfathomable patience and considerable resources, both financial and human, to build a safari lodge. Then, of course, there’s the location, and when it comes to Abelana River Lodge, its prime position on the northern banks of the Selati River, overlooking this beautiful river, is absolutely breathtaking. With 20 luxurious guest suites and a wonderfully designed and immaculately decorated main lodge area, all overlooking the Selati, building Abelana River Lodge has been a labor of love. The knowledge and project experience of all involved in this mammoth undertaking have been a major advantage too, especially when ensuring compliance with both safety and environmental requirements while designing and building a lodge that looks amazing, provides incredible facilities and high levels of comfort and convenience in the middle of
the African wilderness. Thank goodness the team at Abelana Game Reserve are old hands when it comes to breathing life into outstanding safari lodges. Drawing on their combined reserve of experience and undertaking, the team took a vision captured in artists’ impressions and turned it into bricks and mortar. It is no mean feat and fraught with problems, not the least of which was the weather. Even in the home stretch, there were last-minute challenges to contend with. Construction came to a grinding halt earlier this year due to heavy rainfall that swelled the seasonal Selati River and its normally dry tributaries to fast-flowing proportions. This coincided with the main tributary, the Mulati River, coming down in a glorious flood. Underpinning the safari experience on offer at Abelana Game
Reserve is an ethos of sharing that gave rise to its name - the word “abelana” means to share amongst each other in the local Northern Sotho vernacular. The spirit of sharing and caring for every part of the tourism value chain is very much part of Abelana Game Reserve’s DNA. “As caretakers of this reserve, and working in partnership with the Mashishimale community, it’s important that we nurture a culture of sharing the benefits of what we are doing here,” says Abelana CEO Ian Beauchamp. “This means that we are directly benefitting our community, both through substantial annual lease fees and a tourism levy and through job creation and procurement practices that encourage entrepreneurship and joint venture opportunities,” adds Ian. https://www.abelanagamereserve.com/

When not on drives or exploring the area on foot, guests will be looked after by Jason and Kayla Johnstone (who managed Chiawa Camp and Old Mondoro for five years) and can spend time in the photography hide, relaxing in the elegant lounge and terrace areas, dining on international cuisine with local influences,
sharing safari stories around the fire pit, and stargazing from the star terrace with its telescope. WINES + VINEYARDS
From France to Sonoma, Winemaking is a
SEILLAN FAMILY AFFAIR | BY F R A N E N D I C O T T M I L L E R

I
t can easily be claimed that wine runs through the veins of the Seillan family. As co-proprietors with Jackson Family Wines of Château Lassègue in France’s Saint-Émilion region, and as vignerons of Sonoma County’s Vérité, patriarch Pierre Seillan and his children Hélène and Nicolas steward their vineyards on two continents utilizing Old World expertise and flawless, modern winemaking technique.
A sixth generation vigneron, Pierre’s career in the wine industry began at his family’s French estate, Bellevue. Located in Gascony, France, this idyllic spot is where he learned to farm the vineyards. Later, he focused his efforts at Château de Targé in the Loire Valley before spending two decades in Bordeaux managing several châteaux across eight different appellations, an experience that allowed him to explore the nuances between various vineyard sites, creating the basis for his micro-cru (vineyards-within-vineyards) philosophy that allows him to build the elegant and complex architecture of his current wines. “I am a vigneron, not a winemaker, which means that whichever country in which I am making wine, I am a servant of that soil, working with hundreds of different micro-crus in each location,” says Pierre, who pivoted in the mid 1990’s upon meeting American winemakers Jess Jackson and his wife Barbara Banke who convinced him to join Sonoma-based Jackson Family Wines as vigneron. Recognizing the potential of the Sonoma County terroir, located in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountain Range, and excited about the possibility of crafting his own wines in California, he accepted. Together, they created Vérité (French for ‘truth’), a label that, since its first 1998 vintage, has consistently achieved great acclaim, including fifteen perfect 100-point scores from Robert Parker Wine Advocate. “Wherever I am, the soil make-up is my inspiration. I analyze the topography, elevation, vegetation, and climate in terms of wind and rainfall each year, levels of heat during the growing season, and position to the sun. My understanding and sensitivity to these elements is what makes the difference in my work. But never forget - as soon as you think you have the knowledge, you have more to learn. It is the diversity of micro-crus that allows me to create the quality and complexity of the wines but also the essential style at Vérité and Château Lassègue.” 90 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | JUNE 2020
Pierre’s Jackson Family Wines partnership continued to flourish and in 2001, he crafted the inaugural vintage of Anakota, a single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, inspired by the unique terroir of Knights Valley in Sonoma County. In 2002, he began crafting Arcanum at the Tenuta di Arceno estate in Tuscany, and he returned to France in 2003 when he and the Jackson/Banke family purchased the 17th century Saint-Émilion estate Château Lassègue in Bordeaux. Today, Pierre splits his time between Tuscany and Bordeaux, where son Nicolas serves as vice president of both Tenuta di Arceno and Château Lassègue, and Sonoma, where daughter Hélène serves as Vérité’s assistant winemaker. Having learned at the heels of their dad, the siblings share his passion for respecting the soil and allowing the terroir to speak through their wines. At Château Lassègue, built in 1738, Nicolas is responsible for production (vineyards, winemaking and bottling), accounting, and finance. He tends old-growth vines that create a rich, aromatic Cabernet Franc/Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon blend that is powerful and elegant. The ornate sundials that adorn the stunning façade of Château Lassègue are a nod to the vineyards’ perfect dawn-to-dusk sun exposure; the vines grow on south by southwest facing hills amidst rich soils of clay and limestone that add exquisite minerality to their fruit. At Tenuta di Arceno, he focuses on administration and with Pierre oversees operations. “Watching my father managing several estates and crafting wines as I was growing up, I learned to observe and respect nature, and also to work with integrity and perseverance,” says Nicolas with overt respect for his father. “From a very early age, he trained me to produce wines that reflect their origins by listening to instinct and staying close to your roots. We both pay quite a lot of attention to the details, we are both stubborn, and we both have a very strong work ethic. I admire his intuition, loyalty, leadership and the inspiration he gives others.” Replies Pierre, “In my opinion, Nicolas is one of the most ‘complete’ vignerons on the planet. Today, along with his wife Christina, he manages Château Lassègue with incredibly high precision on both the business and production side. Under Nicolas, the quality of the wines of Château Lassègue continues to improve, yet

he maintains the style while respecting the terroir of Saint-Émilion.” At Vérité, Hélène works alongside her father on vineyard operations, harvest dates, winemaking protocols, and blending her family’s Old World expertise with New World fruit to produce three of the most critically acclaimed Bordeaux blends ever produced: the Merlot-based La Muse, the Cabernet Sauvignon-based La Joie, and the Cabernet Francbased Le Désir. Hélène started her wine career at Château Lassègue in 2003, an environment that provided unparalleled experience and a comprehensive overview of every step in the farming and winemaking process. By 2006, she held the role of the estate’s assistant vigneron. She returned to California and Vérité in 2008, bringing with her everything she learned from her time in Saint-Émilion. She is dedicated to continuing what her father started and takes utmost care in every step of the viticultural and winemaking process; every vineyard is an intricate patchwork of soils, microclimates, exposures, and elevations. Rather than treat each site as a single entity, Hélène and her father have chosen the absolute best quality micro-parcels from existing vineyards. After twenty years of careful study of the Sonoma terroir, they have identified more than 100 of these tiny micro-crus, representing a palette of more than 40 different soil types spanning 2400 ft. in elevation. “My daughter has exceptional talent and totally understands the style of Vérité,” says Pierre. “She is the perfect person to continue Vérité. She understands the complexity of the blends and we have been repairing vineyards for new stock to ensure not just the protection of the quality but also the style of the wines.” “I believe it is my duty and responsibility to keep the signature that my father created 20 years ago,” adds Hélène, who remains extremely close with her brother. The two are in constant communication about Vérité and Chateau Lassègue. “At any moment Nicolas and I could switch places and you wouldn’t know a difference in the resulting wine.” “We all work toward the same goal with the same voice,” says Pierre. “Quality without style doesn’t mean anything. It is the style that is the reference of the quality.”
