PETER STRINGFELLOW Palace in the Sun

| By Angela Sara West

F

rom booking The Beatles for £50, to signing Edwin Starr and Dusty Springfield and hosting performances from Take That, he has enjoyed an illustrious and fascinating career as one of our country’s most famous entrepreneurs. This selfmade multimillionaire has built his dreams from the rubble of the Blitz, survived a prison sentence, bankruptcy and the New York Mafia to see his name up in lights on both sides of the Atlantic. A former steel worker and member of the British Merchant Navy, he has led an extraordinary life, opening clubs across the Pond, along with The Hippodrome and world-famous gentlemen’s club, Stringfellows, in London.

National treasure and legendary entrepreneur, Peter Stringfellow, talks to Angela Sara West about why he’s (possibly!) swapping his haven in Spain for Italy.

H

aving clocked up 54 years in the nightclub business, it’s time to wind down. “I now only have the one classic club, Stringfellows in Covent Garden. It’s been open 37 years and makes me more than enough money to enjoy the rest of my life,” explains Peter. “I haven’t just been the businessman in nightclubs… I’ve LIVED the life in my nightclubs almost every night of my life. I’ve had a wonderful time and now, I’m not retired, but I’m certainly leaning back a little!” These days, he’s in his club three times a week. “Not bad for a 76-yearold! I go to my office around twice a week and am constantly on my iPhone, iPad… you name it!” Peter wed his third wife, former Royal Ballet dancer, Bella, eight years ago. They have two young children, Rosabella, 3½, and Angelo, 1½. “They’re an absolute delight! My whole life is wrapped around them and my wife. I’m a very happy and lucky man.” He also has two grown-up children from his first marriage. “My beautiful daughter, Karen, lives with her husband and my grandkids in America, where they have their own restaurant empire. My son, Scott, has two children, lives in London and is the director of Stringfellows.” Peter and Bella recently moved from their central London apartment on the Albert Embankment to leafy suburbia. “My young family has changed everything. Our garden was St. James’ Park! When the second baby came, it was time to move out.” The family now lives in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire. “Our little girl goes to the local school. We’ll build a couple more bedrooms onto our 4-bedroom house here. We’re incredibly happy. This is a much more sensible way of living. I’m a commuter now!” Peter has a long history with overseas property, having previously owned homes in the US. His favourites? “When I lived in New York, I thought that was it. When I lived in London at Harley House, I thought that was it. The same for when I lived in Miami’s Biscayne Bay at Coconut Grove, in Beverley Hills… even the hotels of Paris… Now, it’s Gerrards Cross.” His house in LA was at the top end of Rodeo Drive. “It was GORGEOUS, I enjoyed living there but didn’t enjoy LA because my business was full of superstars who wouldn’t spend any money! They’re very spoilt, but nice people. I haven’t met a bad one yet. I’ve always enjoyed their company.” Seventeen years ago, Peter purchased a lavish villa in Mallorca, which is very close to his heart but is now on the market for €3.75m. “An absolute bargain!” says Peter, who admits it would be a reluctant sale. “I may sell it, I may not. I’m in a position where I don’t have to. If somebody comes along that makes it easy and meets my price, then I will possibly sell it, but to let Mallorca go would be a major life changer. It’s been one of my main homes and that’s how it feels. It has a permanent housekeeper. It’s incredible. It’s my home...” He and Bella seriously considered living in Mallorca rather than Gerrards Cross. “To live there, the children would go to the international schools, some of which are very good, but I’d need to travel every two weeks for three or four days in London for my business. As much as we love Mallorca, we eventually decided that would be too restrictive, but it was very close.”

So, they won’t be going to LIVE there, but why sell up? “We spend more time now going to Italy, where my wife’s family lives and we’re dictated to by the school holidays so, although we still love Mallorca, we just don’t have the time to go. I used to be on a plane every couple of weeks, but when you’ve got babies, you can’t do that. Also, the villa has steps, which is perfect for maybe a grown-up family, but not necessarily right for a two or three year-old. I haven’t GOT to sell it, but if I don’t, what am I going to do with it? I’m not particularly keen on renting it and don’t just want to own it as an investment.” The former ladies’ man has enjoyed a long-standing love affair with the island, first visiting for a family holiday in the 70s, before being invited back around 1990 by a friend who had retired and moved there. “I liked it immediately. The first thing I did was buy a boat, which I lived on for around six years before buying the villa. I took the boat and lived in Ibiza for a while, then I met my wife and we decided that the villa was where we’d like to be. It became our home and that’s how we’ve lived our lives these last years, between Mallorca, London and Italy.” Peter has owned (and now sold) two Sunseekers on the island. “I’ve had a wonderful time, sailing to Ibiza, Formentera and Menorca. It must be the best spot in the whole Mediterranean for boats.” Affording breath-taking sea view, Peter’s contemporary-style property sits on an exclusive estate on a hill in Bendinat, overlooking upmarket fashionista hangout, Puerto Portals marina. The four-bedroom villa boasts four ensuites, a fabulous pool, and, of course, his legendary love for leopard print. “It was originally built by an American, so downstairs, it’s open-plan, which appealed to me, with the lounge, dining room, kitchen and what I call my office area, all open-plan on one floor, plus a small area where the original Stringfellows piano is.” THAT piano, which went from London to Mallorca and is now earmarked for Gerrards Cross, has felt a fair few famous fingers in its time. “Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Little Richard and Elton John have all played it, Julian Lennon, another homeowner in Mallorca, tinkled away on it, my good friend Kool, of Kool and The Gang, also visited me there and played it...” Has his Spanish home witnessed any wild parties? “No, I’ve kept it as private. Mallorca has been for laidback family time, and that’s how I like 18 Upscale Living Magazine |

MAY 2017 www.upscalelivingmag.com

it. I host my parties in the club. I’ve occasionally hosted a Mallorca party for the locals and some friends. I once brought a couple of drag queens over from London, my good friends Ruby Venezuela and Ebony, and they scandalised, of course! Very naughty, the pair of them… People still talk about that!” So, while the clubland Casanova mingles with the A-list at his London club, “Donald Trump, Simon Cowell, Rod Stewart… the lovely Charlie Sheen a couple of weeks ago,” Peter’s place in Mallorca’s not for hobnobbing, although the island is a magnet for Hollywood heavyweights, with Michael Douglas among the numerous homeowners there. “It’s nice to say hello to these people when we bump into them, but we don’t go looking for them. We frequent the same restaurants occasionally. Celebs invariably like to live and hang out in Deià, in the north.” Peter lives quite a simple life there. “I keep chickens and ducks in my garden and play with a little vegetable patch. I love growing sage and lettuce, which come easy. I’ve got orange and lemon trees... That’s the good thing about living in the sun. All those things I’ve mentioned, you couldn’t buy them if you wanted them desperately in England. All this comes with living in the gorgeous Mediterranean.” He’s also a keen cook: “I’ve got a wonderful kitchen, so I like to do a lot of cooking. It’s not your latest modern thing, but it’s got the island in the middle and it’s fabulous.” He also loves Mallorca’s prolific food markets. “Santa Catalina, in Palma, is a very special place, with wonderful, localised produce. If it’s not growing, they don't sell it!” They have a great fish bar with fantastic, freshly-caught fish. There are some great supermarkets, too.” How’s his Spanish? “Café con leche, por favor and the other one is nada más… and now I’m struggling! When you’re in and out of the island, you don’t get much chance to actually learn it. If you lived there, you’d quickly adapt. And it doesn’t hurt to try!” Having tamed his party-animal reputation, he’s developed a taste for restaurants: “That’s where we go to relax, now we’ve got babies.” They’re spoilt for choice with fine local eateries. “In my area, a favourite is Mood, which looks straight out onto the bay, has excellent service and food. It attracts the more affluent, starrier crowd and you never know who you might bump into… big names who live on the island. Not that

we ever use the swimming pool, but it’s like a spa as well. In the port itself, another favourite is Ritzi, a lovely, fine Italian. If I went to Mallorca tonight, Chameli’s in Portals Nous would be my first port of call. The food is exceptionally good and such incredible value. I’m always amazed at how small my bills are there. Where in London it’s £100 a head, four of us sit in Chameli’s, dine, drink wine and struggle to pay £130 all in… and the food is incredible!” “Di Benedetto in Bendinat was THE restaurant in Mallorca but, sadly, the guy moved back to England. That was easily one of my favourite restaurants of all time, not just on the island, anywhere. I miss that place…” Peter has often ventured to the nearby capital. “Work on the cathedral is finished now and it’s even more beautiful than before. Palma is a wonderful city for eating… Namaste is my favourite Indian restaurant in the whole world. It’s consistently good and the owner is always there, which I like. In the early years, I did the lovely train journey through the lemon, orange and olive groves from Palma to Sóller, where a friend lived. On a beautiful day, it’s fabulous.” Although he’s a sun-lover, he doesn’t do beaches. His favourite spot is beside his pool. “At the end of the day, what more do you want? There’s a very Spanish beach, Playa Panasonic, at the bottom of the hill just below Bendinat, where the locals go. It has a bar, cafés, boats in the bay... It’s not a mad, touristy spot. If I did go to the beach, it would be there.” Philanthropist Peter never fails to support his good friend, Mallorcabased Robert Winsor's celebrity golf tournaments. “I always turn up and sponsor when charity calls. I’ll go on stage speaking, buy tickets, tables, things from his auction… I love the golfer boys but I’ve never played golf in my life!” So, he’s no king of golf clubs but as the king of nightclubs, has he been tempted to expand his business empire there? “No, Mallorca’s my haven. I’ve never really been to any of the clubs on the island.” How about local fiestas? “We see them in the port and they’re good fun.” Any downsides to life there? “Truthfully, I’ve nothing bad to say about Mallorca. It’s a beautiful place. It’s even worth getting on easyJet to get there! That's what I do!” Regardless of whether he sells, Peter has more property plans; for Puglia, in Italy. “We’re buying land and building a villa in San Vito dei Normanni, Brindisi. It will be a year before it’s ready. Bella is half-Italian; her father is very English and her mother very Italian. I love the Italians. They’re all family crazy and when you go there, they go all out, have massive dinners and I love it! My mother-in-law is one of best cooks I’ve ever come across.” Having plumped for Puglia, Peter believes it’s the next property hotspot. “The area’s probably like Mallorca was 20-odd years ago. It’s incredible value, the land is incredibly easy to buy and you can build a lot cheaper than anywhere else. I think I’m getting into Puglia before everything goes completely crazy!”

P R O F I L E local, provincial Italian food. Northern Italians go there to live in the seaside area. I love the area. As with Mallorca, we’ll make this our fantastic family home.” Does he speak the lingo? “The only Italian I know is grazie. That kind of works well for me!” Peter prefers flying the family there by private jet. “I’ve used Ryanair a lot but now, with the babies, it’s a step too far.” Even his beloved, pampered pooches have enjoyed airborne VIP treatment, having recently moved from Mallorca to Puglia to live with Bella's sister there while their new home is being built. The only solution Peter could find to comfortably transport them was to hire a six-seater private jet complete with a stewardess and VIP escort at either end… with Peter following them on an easyJet flight! “They are four well-travelled little dogs. Two Chihuahuas and two Yorkshire Terriers. It wouldn’t be right to take them from what they’re used to, the Mediterranean way of living, to London, which would have given them a winter.” “Life in the sun, it appeals to me. I mean, even my house here in London, my son always says ‘Dad, your house is like a greenhouse… it’s so hot!’ That’s how I like it. My heating’s on even in the summer. Mallorca appealed to me as Italy appeals to me. I can deal with heat – I love it! Good air conditioning is so important wherever you are if you’re in the sun though.” Peter has numerous tips for readers considering buying anywhere abroad. “Don’t think you’re going to a different part of England or the UK… you’re not. Rent somewhere for three months before you buy. Once you know that’s where you want to be, then you can buy have a wonderful time there. Don't buy anything if you’re on a stretch. If you can JUST afford it, it’s not a good idea. I’ve seen too many people get into trouble with the changing of the economies and with Brexit, who knows what’s going to happen. One minute the pound’s strong, the next it’s not. The winter’s probably better weather than the UK, but it can be very quiet. If you're going to live in these places, you have to think that way. This is where you’re going to LIVE, not to have an elongated holiday.” What will everyone’s favourite long-haired lothario miss most about Mallorca? “The lifestyle, the lovely times and great weather. It’s the safest, nicest place in the world to live. I love everything about the island. It’s the combination of all that. I’m going to miss it all. I’ve had wonderful run in Mallorca. I’ve matured my lovely villa over 14 years and it looks like me inside and feels like me… I put all of my effort into the villa, which has been sensational, and I’m going to do the same thing in Italy… I will remake it all again in Puglia!” For further information about Peter and his nightclubs, visit www.stringfellows.co.uk. Villa enquiries can be made to Paul Baxter at The London Office: Tel: +44 (0)20 7839 0888 / email: paul@tlo.co.uk

Peter’s project is proof that you can get a lot of Italian bang for your buck. “Believe it or not, we’re building a 4-5 bedroom villa in a gated community, with our own pool, large lawn, back field full of vines, side field which will be full of olive groves…. All for around €600,000700,000.” “Mallorca is now probably the most developed island in the Mediterranean, meaning developed well, not bad. It has a great infrastructure and Puglia hasn’t; that’s all still to come.” He stresses that Puglia is a “living area”, with barely a tourist in sight. “Don’t expect an Italian Disneyland. It’s rural, with fields full of artichokes, fruit trees and restaurants offering

QUATRO! | By Angela Sara West

Elvis wanted to meet her, she’s lived it up with the likes of Led Zeppelin and rocked along with the Rolling Stones. She started touring at the age of 14 and, at 66, is still on the road today!

H

aving sold over 50 million records worldwide, hits Can The Can and Devil Gate Drive among them, the Detroit-born, Britain-based chart-topper also found fame as a Hollywood actress, starring as Leather Tuscadero alongside the Fonz in Happy Days, while in 1990, she landed the lead in Annie get your Gun in London’s West End.

Every rocker needs a place to chill, so where does the first woman of Rock’n’Roll go to unwind? Mallorca. My husband (tour promoter, Rainer Haas) and I have a home in the south-west of the island. How long have you owned your property there and how often do you visit? We bought our home around 13 years ago and head there around four times a year. Can you describe your property? It’s an apartment in a modern development on the highest point in Bendinat, on the luxury estate of Sa Vinya. You can see the water and the mountains, as well as a golf course. It’s a small place, just for two, which is ideal for us since we have two big homes in England and Germany. We actually bought the show flat, because we already had two homes – one in Essex and one in Hamburg – and we just wanted ‘easy’ on our holiday place. How you have decorated your property? Is it typically Spanish in style? It was typically Spanish, having been decorated by a Spanish firm, but we have changed it around, thrown out some of the furniture and personalised it, especially with art, statues, photos and big-screen TVs. Once we started living in it, we saw what worked and what didn’t work for us. As an avid art collector, what pieces have you added to your home there? We brought in all the art on the walls and threw away anything that was there already. We now have lots of personal photos, miniature cars and shoes, wine racks… it really is very much us, but still Spanish in texture.

Angela Sara West talks to Suzi Quatro about how she’s still going hell for leather, how she became ‘Doctor’ Suzi, and why the Spanish island of Mallorca is just the ticket when it’s time for some well-deserved time out.

You’re also a fan of feng shui… I think it does some good to de-clutter… in a room, in your life, in your mind….

What have you been up to lately? I’m always busy… always creating… I’m now Doctor Quatro - I received an honorary doctorate of music from Cambridge University last October. It’s a great honour. I will be doing lectures and everything!”

What attracted you to the island, and the Bendinat area in particular? My husband came to Mallorca before me and recommended it for a family vacation. Before we bought our apartment, we’d been visiting for around six years. We’ve gradually grown to feel very at home there. Mallorca’s very pretty and feels safe to me. The island’s natural beauty, tranquillity and low crime rate are among my reasons for buying there. You also have a choice of noise or total quiet. We get to relax, get the sun, go to restaurants and shop. It’s a place to unwind.

Tell me about your latest books… My poetry book, Through My Eyes, has now been released worldwide and I’m about to release my first fiction/novel, The Hurricane. You recently formed a supergroup… Yes, Quatro, Scott and Powell (QSP) comprises me, Andy Scott (Sweet’s guitarist) and Don Powell (Slade’s drummer). We released our album in Australia (on Sony) for my tour. We were my support group, so I supported myself! The album, QSP, made the Top 20. And you’ll be touring the UK later this year on the Legends Live tour, which has previously seen Dionne Warwick and Roberta Flack take to the stage… It’s going to be excellent! I am ‘headlining’ myself. Other acts include David Essex, The Osmonds and Hot Chocolate. An evening of hits… what could be better?!! Any other projects we can look forward to? I have been offered to do UNZIPPED (my autobiography) - Part 2. I’m considering it… I’m also working on a new album, yet to be announced. You famously once said “I will retire when I go on stage, shake my ass, and there is silence.” What motivates you to keep working and touring? Simple. I love what I do. I was put on this earth to entertain and communicate… and will do so until my dying day! 23 Upscale Living Magazine |

MAY 2017 www.upscalelivingmag.com

How do you like to spend your time there? I like to swim, jog, sunbathe and read a little. Then I go to the port, Puerto Portals in Portals Nous which, I think, is the nicest harbour on the island, and drink my coffee whilst reading The Daily Mail newspaper. This is my ritual. Which are your favourite hangouts on the island? The Japanese restaurant, Tahini, in Puerto Portals is one of my favourites. There’s a great place in Deià we always go to - Josef Sauerschell’s Es Raco d`es Teix. We also love Olivera at Castell Son Claret (a restored castle) in Calvià. At the port, we go to Flanigan... it’s always packed and has a small, but excellent, menu.” Where do you head for retail therapy? Shopping-wise, I like going to Palma and Puerto Portals. How’s your Spanish? I spoke Spanish in school and although I don’t speak it now, I know that if I tried it would all come back. Sometimes, when you shop it can take forever to get something as simple as a hairdryer, just because you don’t know the Spanish word for it!

Do you feel fully-integrated? Do you get involved in local fiestas/ customs? I’m not a local. This takes many, many years. It’s a vacation place. We have some friends there and our next-door neighbours are great people. Do you mingle with other big names in this playground for the rich & famous? I’m not really a mingler… although we do run into each other. Stan and Viv Boardman are friends we dine with. Any downsides to living there? Well, this is the first house my husband and I have bought together, i.e. sharing every cost. So, being new at this, we argued about every pot and pan! It was very funny and a lesson well learned on how to ‘share’!! Do you ever visit the mainland or other Spanish islands? I’ve been to Ibiza and the mainland, touring there in the 70’s and visiting in the 90’s, and I did a gig in a bullring about 13 years ago. I like Barcelona very much. What would be your perfect day on the island? Up at 7am for a jog down the hill and back up again, then cool down and stop sweating! The temperature should not be too hot – I prefer spring. Then off to Puerto Portals, where I religiously buy my English newspaper. I then have my quiet couple of cups of coffee and do the crosswords. After that, I stop at the grocery store and pick up a few things before heading back to the house. I sunbathe while reading or playing Yahtzee (I can’t just lay there) interrupted by some swimming. At 6.15pm it’s The Weakest Link on TV and we then go out somewhere to eat. A couple glasses of wine or champagne while we watch a movie, then sleep time. A perfect day… 25 Upscale Living Magazine |

Is the island a source of inspiration for your music? It’s more a source of inspiration when I am writing my books and preparing my radio shows… Quatrophonic on BBC Radio 2, themed each week. Finally, what does Mallorca mean to you? Mallorca means escape, peace and quiet, and the best thing about it is that it’s easy to get to from the UK, so no jet lag. I have enough of that for a lifetime in my profession! 

FACTBOX Suzi’s poetry book, Through My Eyes, is available worldwide and keep an eye out for her forthcoming novel, The Hurricane, out in June (both New Haven Publishing Ltd). OMEGA WATCHES Celebrate 60 Years | By Anthony DeMarco

mmediately were a big hit and are now considered a classic within their product categories. The timeless popularity of these watches has led the Swiss luxury watch brand to introduce a 60year anniversary edition of each model and a special “trilogy” 26 Upscale Living Magazine |

MAY 2017 www.upscalelivingmag.com

Three Omega watches for three specific uses were released in Omega employed digital scanning technology to create accurate

representations of the original watches—including cross-sections and dimensions. This, along with drawings of the original models, served as design templates for the new watches, which were slightly revised but remain true to the 1957 models. All three watches are cased in brushed and polished stainless steel and feature black “tropical” dials. The stainless steel bracelets feature a retrostyle Omega logo on the clasp. All of the logos on the watches are in a different style—a reference to how individual suppliers in the 1950s interpreted the Omega logo. Each watch is limited to 3,557 pieces and delivered inside a presentation box inspired by the original 1957 packaging, including the Seahorse on the lid, a retro logo and red corduroy lining—with two spare straps— leather and NATO—and a tool to change them. triangular hour markers. The 2017 model, based on the CK2913 original, features a black aluminum bezel and retains the original Naïad sign on the crown, which back in 1957 was a mark of the watch’s water resistance. Omega has created a 557-piece limited edition package and engravings for those who purchase all three 60th anniversary models. The outer-box, made of Swiss oak wood, is engraved with the 1957 Seahorse on the lid and a front-plate engraved with “Trilogy 60th Anniversary, 001/557.”

The double-case anti-magnetic watch was designed for scientists, technicians or anyone who worked close to electrical fields. The original’s unpretentious style has been carried over into the 2017 model, though the vintage indexes are slightly deepened to allow a stronger light from the Super-LumiNova filling. The watch is powered by the Omega Master Chronometer caliber 8806, which can resist magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss and comes with a four-year warranty. The Speedmaster Edition 38.6mm

Dr. MICHAEL YAREMCHUK Boston’s Best Plastic Surgeon

H E A L T H

| By Debbi K. Kickham

I’m in love – with the results of my recent facelift. I’m also happy -- no, make that ecstatic – about my recent facelift performed by Dr. Michael Yaremchuk. I’m 61. Now, mind you, none of my friends and family thought I needed a facelift. But I did. My once-oval-shaped face had drooped into a rectangle, and I had nasolabial folds that I didn’t like. And my neck – although saturated with Retin-A for the past 30 years -- had lines across it. I’ve used some of the best beauty products in the world – but it really was time for a facial rejuvenation. I was not going to let myself simply “get old.” I decided that I was going to do something about it – but only with one of the world’s best plastic surgeons. I started my journalistic research and limited it to plastic surgeons in Boston, where I live. I wanted to employ the professional services of a Board-certified plastic surgeon, but also, a doctor who had the aesthetic background and artistic sensibility to rejuvenate my face. I scoured the web, and also asked friends and colleagues for their recommendations. I was very impressed with the recommendation for one surgeon in particular: Dr. Michael Yaremchuk of The Boston Center for Cosmetic Surgery in Back Bay, Boston. Dr. Yaremchuk is currently a clinical professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School; Chief, Craniofacial Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital; and is world-famous for specializing in cosmetic and craniofacial surgery. He is a Boston plastic surgeon of the highest repute. He has written four textbooks, and has written more than 100 scientific articles relating to plastic surgery. He has also traveled worldwide, to universities around the globe, as a Visiting Professor. He is also certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. “Being board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery means that there is a rigorous training program that doctors have to fulfill, and they have to take rigorous exams to be eligible,” says Dr. Yaremchuk. “Once they finish 36 Upscale Living Magazine |

Issue 41 www.upscalelivingmag.com

that training, they must take oral and written exams to be certified by the American Board. That training is different and unique from any other group that considers themselves cosmetic surgeons.” As an award-winning “Best of Boston” board-certified aesthetic surgeon, Dr. Yaremchuk uses his experience in craniofacial surgery to perform remarkable facelifts that look completely natural – and youthful. Even better, Dr. Yaremchuk is renowned among not only the medical community, but among the international clients who fly in from all over the world for his “bespoke” cosmetic surgery that is highly personalized to create a “golden ratio” of facial symmetry. Dr. Yaremchuk Skypes his professional consults with non-local and international patients on a weekly basis and his injectable facial rejuvenations are also highly sought-after. Another plus: Dr. Yaremchuk frequently performs revision surgery on patients who are not pleased with their results from another plastic surgeon. He has, for example, developed many innovative cosmetic procedures including a procedure to lower surgically over-elevated brows or eyelids that have been pulled down. And as further evidence of his expertise, he has been invited to demonstrate his techniques to surgeons all around the world and has performed live surgery in countries including Germany, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Canada and Russia. If you visit Dr. Yaremchuk’s website, here is what you will read: Dr. Yaremchuk imparts facial balance – the ideal facial blueprint – using anthropometric measurements, science, elements of nature and rational thought. He uses proportion of parts and elements of symmetry to guide his work with each individual patient. With this repertoire, imperfect features or faces can be reconstructed or rejuvenated to make a balanced whole. Translation: “Anthropometric measurements are surface measurements of your face – to see what’s normal based on various measurements of the face and facial skeleton, and since everybody is different, you then try to relate different parts of their face so they are in harmonious balance,“ explains Dr. Yaremchuk. “The whole idea is making things relate appropriately one to another on your face. That is the idea of balance. It has to all fit together.” The appointment was made. I couldn’t contain my enthusiasm. What I really appreciated about my medical visit with Dr. Yaremchuk is that he took the time to study my face, and not only discuss my concerns, but to

H E A L T H compare my face today with pictures of myself from years past, which I brought to our consultation. Dr. Yaremchuk’s website advertises that he specializes in “bespoke surgery.” He says that this means that he customizes every operation and surgery to the patient. He says: “It’s like getting a custom made suit. It’s not off-the-rack. You customize the procedure for the aesthetic needs of each patient.” Dr. Yaremchuk is also at the front-and-center of knowing about all the latest beauty trends, and all the latest surgical techniques. He would tell you that the main goal of a facelift is to ameliorate laxity in the lower face and neck – and that with new surgical procedures, there’s no better time than now to consider a facelift. Last year, more than 28% more people obtained facelifts, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. And you don’t need to worry about the “wind-tunnel” look – nowadays plastic surgeons like Dr. Yaremchuk restore the position of the deeper structures and then redrape rather than “pull” the overlying soft tissue envelope. The results are natural, beautifying, and definitely do not have the “operated look” that needs to be avoided at all costs. I was ready. For two weeks before the surgery, I avoided alcohol, aspirin and Ibuprofen, and increased my work load so that I would be free to simply concentrate on recovery after the surgery. Dr. Yaremchuk’s office and surgical center is located in picturesque Back Bay, Boston, and my husband Bill drove me in for my early-morning surgery in October. What do I remember? Dr. Yaremchuk – and his medical team – were kind, compassionate, and caring. I would gladly do it all over again. Here’s another great thing. After the surgery, I had practically no swelling, and no bruising at all. I couldn’t believe it. That’s not to say it was a walk in the park. Post-surgery that evening, my night nurse told me, “This is going to be the longest night of your life,” and it was. I kept sleeping and waking up, taking some pain medication, needing to eat something, and overall, just felt uncomfortable. But I left Dr. Yaremchuk’s medical facility feeling elated, and excited to get into my bed (all outfitted with bolster pillows, to keep my head elevated), and rest, rest, rest. I did just that. I had to stop all exercising, and let my body adapt. I felt nothing but excitement, because I knew my results would be superlative. Just one week later, my Mom and sister visited me (because I didn’t want to drive) and we actually went to Sephora, where I purchased some beauty products. Well, it’s now six months later, and I can honestly tell you – I received great results and six excellent outcomes: my crow’s feet diminished; my eyes are now two perfect almond-shapes; my nasolabial folds decreased; my “marionette” lines around my mouth disappeared; my chin is now oval and I have the neck of a 30-year-old. Dr. Yaremchuk, post-surgery, also injected filler into my lips, and used Botox around my forehead and eyes, to make my transformation even more dramatic. People tell me that I now look 40, not 61, and I feel that I have been “given back” the last 20 years of my life. Outside, I look great, and inside, I feel ready to take on the world. What a confidence-booster! Perhaps the most telling development? Now, six months after my facelift, after years of being called “Ma’am” by strangers – now they are all calling me “Miss.” I couldn’t be happier. https://www.dryaremchuk.com/ 

Buff your Nails & Believe in magic at the same time

uff Beauty Parlour, a quirky upmarket salon and retail space situated in Umhlanga, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa is filled with everything you didn’t realize you need and nothing you expect. Ever heard of the Alice in Wonderland quote, “If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn’t be. And what it wouldn’t be, it would. You see?” This quote is ethos behind the Buff brand and is evident throughout the parlour, right down to every miniscule detail. The moment you walk into the salon, you are immediately transported to a magical land far, far away and it is charming. 42 Upscale Living Magazine |

Offering essential beauty services, ranging from nails to waxing, and lash and brow grooming, this little shop of miracles is a must-see when visiting the beautiful Kwa-Zulu Natal Coast. As much as it is a spot for personal therapy, it is also a one-stop-shop for unique and unconventional gifting, stocking a wide array of brand-specific collections. We have become accustomed to beauty salons that offer generic, white-wall interior, tranquil-music-playing-in-the-background spa experiences. Whilst these salons all serve their purposes and rightfully so, Buff serves to challenge the norm, inviting you to be seduced by the retro décor, the offbeat retail offerings

and the magical ambiance, all whilst enjoying a little rest and relaxation. There is nothing quite like it in South Africa let alone Durban. The original inspiration behind Buff was the iconic Betty Boop, as she is simultaneously sweet and sexy. Owned by a local entrepreneurial family, the Buff brand and space consciously incorporates quirky components and magical elements as it flutters between wonder and whimsy and borrows from past and present. It provides an evocative sensory experience that is countered with slick professional treatments delivered by passionate staff in candy striper styled pinafores. Apart from venturing into Betty’s Boudoir (presided over by a gorgeous, life-size sculpture of Betty Boop we might add) for a little retail therapy in between your nail and waxing appointments, pop past the retro Soda Fountain and American diner-styled area that serves old fashioned soft drinks and handcrafted gourmet donuts from cult local brand, Wicked Donuts.

It doesn’t stop there, tweens and teens can find refuge in the salmon-hued Glow, a dedicated area where they can experiment with appropriate skin care products. Men have The Workshop where they can explore grooming in an environment specifically created to make them feel at ease. For essential services, there are waxing rooms (with televisions, warmed beds and squeeze toys for those who may need it) in which body full waxing is done, including private areas for both men and women. Buff has also been appointed Essie’s first and only flagship salon in South Africa – their imported Essie manicure stations from Italy come with a handbag hook and built-in extractor system to combat the dust and strong odors associated with acrylic and gel nails. The parlour embraces technology and there is not a “please switch off your cell phone” sign in sight! There are easily accessible points for charging phones plus there is a digital library for clients to check out tablets loaded with e-magazines. You can even visit their interactive website and book your appointment online. After a long day at the beach or before an intimate dinner overlooking the Umhlanga beach, let Buff take you to wonderland. It’s certainly worth the experience. ROVOS RAIL The Pride of Africa | By HelĂŠne Ramackers

I

t is the year 1985. Rohan and Anthea Vos board a train en route to the Magaliesberg. Little do they know that this would be the precursor to the most extraordinary and opulent means of train travel in South Africa and Africa, Rovos Rail.

hen the opportunity to travel on The Most Luxurious Train in The World presented itself, I was faced with the dilemma of who to take along on this journey. The decision was simplified by the fact that my daughter had never been on a train and at eleven years old, to travel in true style would make for everlasting memories.

a maximum of 72 guests and chugging along at a top speed of 37 miles per hour ensures that you can take in the spectacular scenery. The steam locomotive is only used in and around the area of Rovos Rail station as the use of steam has become increasingly difficult over the years. For the journey, diesel or electric locomotives are used, reducing the carbon footprint substantially.

Another predicament was which of the seven journeys would we pick? Cape Town to Victoria Falls, the Durban Safari or the very popular Dar Es Salaam expedition? Pretoria to Cape Town sounded like a logical choice as we reside in the Mother City.

Rohan Vos talks us through the formalities of what to expect on board the train and calls each traveller by name to join their host / hostess who will escort you to your room. Being personally identified adds to the grandiose style that is part of the proceedings. Looking after us for the duration of our stay is the effervescent Zodwa Ndlovu and no task is too much trouble for her.

We set off from Cape Town International Airport to board our Airlink flight. The Avro RJ85 is ready and waiting to transport us to Wonderboom National Airport in Pretoria and after a short taxi on the runway, we are up in the air. The food on board is delicious and the chocolate mousse is especially tasty. We walk off the plane straight into the airport building, where our suitcases are already on the conveyer belt. No queues, just convenience. For travellers departing from Wonderboom National Airport, there is a dedicated Airlink business class lounge with the most delectable treats, a wide variety of beverages and free Wi-Fi. Here you can relax in an airconditioned environment before jetting off to Cape Town. Rovos Rail’s Iris Anderson had arranged for a transfer from the airport to Rovos Rail Station in Capital Park, Pretoria. At the station, we are met with a hearty welcome and as we sip on champagne and apple juice, our luggage gets whisked away and tagged only to re-appear in our room on board the train. The Rovos Rail Station is the arrival or departure point for all guests and takes you back to an era of stateliness. The steam locomotive pulls into the station ahead of the shiny green train, snaking its 400 metres past excited travellers. The 36 suites accommodate 46 Upscale Living Magazine |

We depart Rovos Rail Station at 3 o’clock to start our 994 mile journey to Cape Town. Our domicile is Fitzpatrick, a Deluxe suite named after the intrepid traveller Sir Percy Fitzpatrick of Jock of the Bushveld fame. Sized at 108 sq. ft., it accommodates two passengers in either twin or double beds. The luxurious sleeper coaches have been refurbished and remodelled and the wood panelling throughout the suite creates an aura of grandeur. There is a lounge area and an en-suite bathroom with a shower. Fitted with the modern conveniences of hot showers, hair dryers, shaver plugs, a heating / cooling air conditioner and a personal safe for valuables, you will feel right at home. A bar fridge filled with beverages of your choice, doubles up as a writing surface and the two chairs make for comfortable seating. A special feature on Rovos Rail is that the windows can be fully opened. Do take care when sticking your head out to breathe in the fresh African air; wear the goggles provided to shield your eyes. After relaxing in our suite, it is time for High Tea. A tasty array of eats is on offer in the lounge area and if you don’t have a sweet tooth, there are some savoury choices. A vast selection of teas, coffees or whichever other tipple might tickle your fancy is available and prudently served by Lewis Jonga.

It is so fascinating to meet fellow passengers that we lose track of time and before we know it, it is time for dinner. A gong signals the dinner and lunch service, set out in the dining cars. The dress for days on the train is smart casual while for dinner you can don your fancy attire and men are kindly requested to wear a jacket and tie. The dining cars bear testament to the bygone era of Colonial elegance where the finery of the diners is complemented by the starched white tablecloths and silver service. The food, oh the food; it is simply sublime! The chefs are clearly passionate about their trade as the fare coming out of the kitchen is incredible! With a minimum of two chefs on board, we were fortunate to have three on our journey, taking exemplary car of our culinary desires. Chefs Refilwe Raseroka, Sarah Serumula and Leon Koch ensure that the variety of meals have a South African element while not skimping on the exquisiteness of what you are presented with in a sitting. For dinner, we are served by Bianca Engelbrecht and Tharize Henrico while the barman ensures that our glasses are kept filled. The menu consists of four courses: Grilled queen scallops with lemon-scented hollandaise sauce for starters, Slow roasted Karoo lamb shank served deboned, with mashed potatoes, a green bean parcel and mushrooms for main course, a cheese platter with Boland camembert style cheese with a blue vein, served with melon preserve, chives and rosemary infused savoury shortbread and for dessert there is Cape brandy pudding served with cinnamon cream. For every course, there is a wine pairing and after dinner, you can enjoy a selection of teas or Kenyan Coffee. Should you feel peckish at any stage during your trip, you can call on your host/hostess who will arrange for something to be whipped up by the chefs during the 24 hour room service. Filled to the brim, we make our way to our suite where our bed has been turned down. After a warm shower, we retire for the night in our luxurious dwelling. We each have our own duvet covered with the silkiest percale linen and three pillows per person. It takes some getting used to to fall asleep on a moving train, but once you’re in dreamland, you don’t feel the motion. For travellers with sensitive hearing, I suggest the complimentary ear plugs available on board. An incredible sunrise heralds the breaking day and we head to breakfast, 48 Upscale Living Magazine |

which is a veritable feast. Fruit, cereal, pastries, hot breakfast of your choice, here the ‘most important meal of the day’ can be enjoyed while watching the scenery unfold from your vantage point. Today we are visiting Kimberley, a historic town where mining was all the rage in the mid 1800’s and is home to one of the greatest man-made attractions, The Big Hole. The Big Hole has a surface of 42 acres and is 462 metres wide. From mid-July 1871 to 1914, it is believed that 50,000 miners dug the hole with picks and shovels, yielding close to 2,722 kilograms of diamonds. Here you can purchase a shiny memento to remind you of your visit. Once back at the train, we are greeted by the friendly Rovos Rail staff who presents us with cool refresher towels, champagne, orange and apple juice while traversing the red carpet. We are advised to go straight to lunch, which again is out of this world. Hearts of palm served with grilled aubergine with a sweet chilli and coriander dressing for starters, Balsamic and lemon-marinated slices of ostrich fillet served on a potato, beetroot, walnut and watercress salad for main course, a cheese platter with Duo of Huguenot and Amabutho cheddar served with sundried tomato chilli and black pepper savoury jam, fresh grapes, almonds and warm baguette and for dessert there is Seasonal fruit salad with shortbread and mascarpone cream. You do not want to be on a diet when travelling on Rovos Rail! With no phones allowed in public areas – yes, you have to talk to one another! you can release your inner technophile in the privacy of your suite. There is no WiFi on board, so make sure you have enough data to make contact with your loved ones or brag-post on social media. We linger so long at High Tea that the sun is starting to set over the escarpment. A quick change of attire and we are ready for dinner. Tonight is a special night as it’s the last supper on board. Even the staff have taken it up a notch in outfit and I mistake the very ostentatious tuxedo-clad Tshepo Letoaba for James Bond. We dine on sweet potato and lychee soup with peanut butter cream and a savoury crouton for starters, main course is Grilled Cape Rock Lobster Tails with a haricot flavoured bisque cream, Mediterranean vegetables

and lemon rice, a cheese platter with Dalewood Mushroom Brie served with fig relish, rocket leaves and luxury melba toast and for dessert there is Dark chocolate fondant with fresh seasonal berries and vanilla bean ice-cream. To conclude the evening, celebratory cocktails are served in the observation car. Time to wind down and get some sleep. I awake at 3:39 in the morning with a bright light in our suite. Is it morning already? No, there is the most magnificent electric storm and rain pelting against the windows. It is Day 3 and as we meander through the desolate Karoo, we enjoy another delicious breakfast. We are heading for Matjiesfontein and the train manager, Adam Bentley, has instructed the train driver to stop the train 3 miles prior to our arrival at Matjiesfontein station. This is so that the fitness fanatics can get their ‘fix’ with some exercise as they walk the rest of the way to Matjiesfontein. As we reach Matjiesfontein station, we disembark the train to stretch our legs, take in the scenery and visit the historical buildings. The train departs for our final destination, Cape Town via the picturesque winelands while we enjoy a hearty lunch. On the menu is Traditional South African Bobotie – a gently spiced beef mince dish oven-baked with a layer of savoury egg custard – served warm with fruit chutney and an apricot, julienne pepper and kiwi fruit salad topped with almonds as a starter. For main course is the delicious Garlic and lemon grilled prawn skewer on a green salad with a julienne of peppers, mange tout and cucumber drizzled with coriander and ginger dressing. The cheese platter has Drunken Pecorino with a salad of wild leaves and thin slivers of apple garnished with chives and dressed with a lemon and olive oil vinaigrette served with a dark seeded roll. As we walk back to our suite, a very pleasant fragrance fills the passage. I pop my head into the room to see what smells so nice. It’s Zodwa, going about her daily routine. ‘What are you doing’? he Elle Maison, a beautiful and private home located in Geneve outskirts on an medium high plateau from which you can enjoy the views of the city and of the enchanting lake. We had the opportunity to talk with the owners of Damilanostudio Architects and asked them some questions about the stunning architecture and the vision behind this specific project. Can you tell us who the owners of this splendid home are? What were they looking to obtain from this design? The owners are amazing!. Both married with the wife working with a Chinese trade company and the husband an engineer. As they both have very busy schedules, they were looking for a home design that would provide them with a tranquil space that succumbs to the beauty of nature.

Were there any connectivity as to the project and design of this home? The transparency of this house comes from the freedom spirit of the owners. Who was in charge of the interior? Were there rare materials used in the construction? Can you tell us more about the interior? The interior was designed by us but always with our client's vision in mind. We all visited showrooms for choices in lighting and furnishings. We, at Damilanostudio used different materials to characterize both the interior and exterior spaces by mixing natural materials, like stone and wood, to tiles and corten. Wooden part was incorporated by Cobola Falegnameria, while paint work was done by Bertero. The mixed woods and the different colors seeing were used to provide a harmonious look at the facade. Can you tell us what can be seeing from the terrace? I can imagine paradise! From the terrace you can enjoy magnificent open views of Mont Blanc and the Alps Mountains. It truly is an inspiration to be able to relax there and enjoy the surroundings it offers.

What was the most interesting part of this project? Can you tell us more about the lighting in the dining room?

Tell us a little bit more about the garden that surrounds the home.

The most interesting part of this project will have to be the view of the home with the lighting coming in from all the windows illuminating the open space providing a sense of peace and comfort, exactly what the owner's vision was; a design which offered them serenity and an escape from their very busy life.

Stunning would be the ideal word. Designed by Roagna Vivai, the garden was built on a hill and as such, different levels were designed, each separated by big corten vases with greenery. A mixture of grass, dark gravel and different type of greenery was used with the final intention to create an array of colors and scents throughout.

Run for the Roses THE KENTUCKY DERBY AT 142 | By Neil MacMillan

I

f there is any race that symbolizes horse racing so thoroughly, it is the Kentucky Derby. The race is the first leg on the journey to the Triple Crown. The derby is the oldest continuously held sporting event in the United States. The one and a quarter mile race is called the most exciting two minutes in sports. Twenty three-year-old thoroughbred horses vie for the blanket of roses draped over the winner and the chance to win the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, the other two legs of the journey to the Triple Crown. This year approximately 155,000 horse racing aficionados will gather at Churchill Downs to witness the 143rd Run for the Roses. While the race draws fans of all statures, the elite watch the race from “Millionaire’s Row”, lavish box seats where the view is much better than the infield. Women wear outfits topped with large and elaborate hats. Haute couture is the uniform of the day and the elaborate hats are the artistry of some of the world’s most noted milliners.

Millionaire’s Row is a place where fortunes are won and lost in a scant 120 seconds. The purse is a cool $2,000,000 and 1st place draws $1,425,000. A fortune can be made by the owner if his three-year-old earns the coveted blanket of roses. The mint julep is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. The spectators in the infield sip theirs in souvenir glasses for that year’s race. You’ll be sipping yours from an ice frosted silver julep cup. A local favorite served at the Kentucky Derby is a stew made of chicken, pork and vegetables called burgoo. While many luminaries attend the race, the derby reached new heights in 2007 when Queen Elizabeth II took part in the festivities. VIPs are ushered in via a special red carpet entrance. Queen Elizabeth was preceded by 62 Upscale Living Magazine |

her uncle, the Duke of Windsor in 1951 and her sister, Princess Margaret in 1974. Presidents Truman, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, and George H. W. Bush have attended the Kentucky Derby as well. Babe Ruth, Mohammed Ali and Bob Hope have visited. George Steinbrenner and Steven Spielberg had horses run in the derby. Sometimes the stars come out during the day. Only twelve horses have won the Kentucky Derby and went on to win the Triple Crown. Sir Barton was the first in 1919, followed by Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), Citation (1948) Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977), Affirmed (1978), and American Pharoah in 2015. Secretariat set a track record that is still unbroken and gave even quicker times in the Preakness and the Belmont stakes. Churchill Downs is so famous that its noted twin spires were featured on Kentucky’s state quarter when it was issued. Designed by draftsman Joseph Dominic Baldez, The original plans called for a simple grandstand. Baldez felt the grandstand needed something more. He added the Twin Spires. Erected in 1895, the grandstand is the symbol of the derby and arguably the most recognized building in Kentucky. Then president of Churchill Downs, Matt Winn commented; “Joe, when you die there is one monument that will never be taken down, the Twin Spires.” The horses are led out to the track to the strains of Stephen Collins Foster’s My Old Kentucky Home played by the University of Louisville Marching Band. The tradition dates to 1930 and the University of Louisville Marching Band has played the anthem since 1936 in all but a few openings. The gate opens and two minutes later you look at your picks. You won! This is Derby Fever and you can catch it Saturday, May 6. The Run for the Roses is an American legacy. Will you be there?

MONTENEGRO Magic at Aman Sveti Stefan | By Angela Sara West

Looking for some first-class escapism? Look no further than this high-end hideaway, situated on a stunning islet simply oozing style, history and romance, which also happens to be magnificent Montenegro’s most iconic site! Angela Sara West checks in to an award-winning Aman resort, which is back with a bang following decades of upheaval.

Having evolved from an ancient fortress for 12 families to a village supporting 400 inhabitants in the early 1700s, it was in the 1950s that the tiny island of Sveti Stefan made its mark when the last of the villagers moved to the mainland. The islet became a high-profile hotel for big names in the fashion and entertainment worlds and, along with royals and politicians, was graced by Hollywood heavyweights including Marilyn Monroe, Kirk Douglas and Sophia Loren. The break-up of Yugoslavia in the early ‘90s marked the end of this glamorous era but, 50 years after its initial renaissance as a luxury retreat, thanks to Aman Resorts’ magic

You’ve seen those postcard-perfect TV ads promoting the gorgeous hidden gem Montenegro, arguably the last of Europe’s undiscovered treasures, but where exactly is that idyllic–looking spot famed for its unspoilt beauty and breathtaking views? It’s the fairytale Aman Sveti Stefan, an awe-inspiring restoration of a 15th-century fortified village harbouring a glorious past. The islet sizzles in a uniquely historical sun-drenched setting on the alluring Adriatic coast. Attached to the mainland by a narrow isthmus, creating Montenegro’s most famous view, it’s a spectacle that really needs to be seen to be believed… Beckoning with beauty beyond belief, whether you’re planning a proposal, wedding, honeymoon or other special occasion, or are simply seeking some 5* R&R, this Balkan paradise awaits. Jet set go! “At the birth of our planet, the most beautiful encounter between land and sea must have been on the Montenegrin coast,” wrote Lord Byron. I, for one, agree. 67 Upscale Living Magazine |

touch, harmoniously blending the regal grandeur of old Europe to retain the island’s historic ambiance, Sveti Stefan once again reigns supreme, and is firmly back on the map with today’s global jet set. Two historic sites comprise the resort, which is situated along 2km of Montenegro’s most renowned stretch of coastline; the protected rocky outcrop of the island itself and Stefan’s stately Villa Miločer, situated on the beach opposite on the mainland and enjoying unrivalled views out to sea and across the bay to the island. As the former summer residence of Queen Marija, the great granddaughter of Queen Victoria and the Queen Consort of King Aleksandar of Yugoslavia, the villa later became a home for the former leader of Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito.

show-stopping sea views to the island or the gardens. One of the secrets to the resort’s successful renovation is the retention of its historic exterior, which remains largely unchanged, paying homage to its fabled past. The interiors have also been meticulously restored but updated to a super-high spec to meet contemporary comfort and ‘wow factor’ expectations. Original interior walls have been expertly preserved and furniture, and many fixtures, specifically manufactured to match the island’s original style. With a décor mantra of ‘less is more’, the resort’s pale palette interior designs include putty-coloured curtains and crisp white linen lovers won’t be disappointed.

Suggested pull-out: “Soak up centuries of history in the clusters of rustic, red-tile-roofed stone buildings and intricate cobbled lanes crisscrossing quaint courtyards, indelibly infused with a tempestuous past, but now blissfully bathed in peace and prosperity.”

The spa cottages offer a range of refined massage and body treatments, or indulge yourself at the Queen’s Beach state-of-the-art spa after a leisurely workout in the gym or a cooling dip in the cliffside swimming pool. A second tempting pool entices on the upper terraces on the south side of the island, or guests can bask on one of the resort’s inviting beaches.

Where to stay… Where to play…

Fine wining & dining

Aman Sveti Stefan boasts 50 cottages on the island and eight scrupulously-appointed spacious suites at Villa Miločer on the mainland. Accommodation is divided into Village Rooms, Cottages, Deluxe Cottages, Grand Suites and the Sveti Stefan Suite, which sports its own private pool, all offering sea/rooftop vistas or quaint courtyard or piazza views.

Breakfast like a king, gazing at the shimmering Adriatic on one of the panoramic terraces, before working up an appetite for a spot of lunch in the shady square. From tasty tapas to rustic fare and world-class seafood given haute-cuisine treatment, the pulsating Piazza is the exclusive enclave’s atmospheric heart and soul, featuring a number of al-fresco venues for sampling the very best of local cuisine complemented by premium wines and stratospheric standards of service.

Built between 1934 and 1936, Villa Miločer overlooks the imposing island. The graceful stone villa sits on a 32-hectare estate, set on the famous horseshoe-shaped, pink-sand Queen’s Beach, fringed with fragrant fig and olive trees and surrounded by ancient cedar and pine forests. Enhanced by subtle luxurious touches, its sumptuous suites enjoy free-standing bathtubs in stunning stone bathrooms and Juliet balconies, affording 68 Upscale Living Magazine | MAY 2017 www.upscalelivingmag.com

The main restaurant here serves international cuisine and modern interpretations of Montenegro’s culinary heritage. There’s also a cellarstyle enoteca, a convivial antipasti bar, a buzzing taverna and a woodand-leather-bedecked cigar room, offering fine Cuban cigars, vintage Armagnac, rare cognac and single-malt whiskeys.

T R A V E L

On the mainland, you’re also spoilt for choice, with a selection of exemplary eateries dishing up superb cuisine. Miločer Villa’s The Dining Room, wisteria-clad seafront Loggia and the Living Room (which serves a fantastic afternoon tea) all offer elegant menus, bursting with fresh produce and locally-caught seafood. With its dramatic views, the Cliff Pool and Bar’s the ideal place for sunset cocktails, while drinking in the mind-blowing panoramas and feasting on Italian-influenced delights in the Queen’s Chair clifftop restaurant, perched high on a rocky precipice, is a must. Alternatively, tucked away in a nearby cove shaded by cypress trees and century-old olive groves, the Beach Café’s a casual spot for informal dining. For beachside brasserie-style fare, take your pick from The Olive Tree’s menu of cut-to-order meats and seafood, prepared on wood-fired grills and an aromatic olive-wood-fired rotisserie.

Activities for action lovers & culture vultures Enjoying empty beaches lapped by pristine emerald green waters, the resort remains a favourite destination for newlyweds looking for the ultimate spot after tying the knot, but whether you picture turn-upand-flop-out island idyll indolence in total seclusion or you’re adventure seekers after activities-a-go-go, the options for low-profile or high-energy, exciting experiences in this blissful haven are endless. The resort offers bespoke, personalised guided excursions to dizzyinglymountainous Montenegro’s scenic and cultural attractions along the coast and into the country’s spectacular interior. Visit the old town of Budva, the wonderfully-preserved baroque city of Perast, or go further afield on guided expeditions, discovering the stories of centuries past. There are adventures aplenty in this rapidly-changing land of rugged snow-capped mountains, punctuated by remote clifftop monasteries and

imposing stone churches clinging precariously to rocks. UNESCO World Heritage sites include the Bay of Kotor, with its medieval walled town of narrow, cobbled pathways and church-clad squares against a steep mountain backdrop. A crumbling castle offers phenomenal vistas of bobbing luxury yachts and the fantastic fjord. Activities for the adventurous and adrenaline seekers include cycling and setting sail on the Adriatic, plus an array of water-based sports, such as waterskiing, kayaking, big game fishing and diving. Ski bunnies can hit the nearby slopes, while bird lovers grab their binoculars and flock to remote Lake Skadar, home to 280 species, including endangered varieties. Wine o’clock? If, like me, you like to learn about regional wines through private tastings and vineyard visits, it can all be arranged, rounding off a perfect day back at the resort with your favourite bottle… Oh, and THOSE views…

The Lone Mountain Wilderness of big Sky Montana | By Brooke Cunningham

Real Estate In the UHNW market has requirements beyond beauty and cache which include privacy, discretion, security and technology. Even in environments where it is clear that the mission is to get away from worldly cares, the home base, be it a house, condo, or ranch must have the latest in all of these features. For families looking for a home away at a ski area, Big Sky has three private club environments which have many different options within that framework.

At the side of the largest skiable terrain in the united states lies the Yellowstone Club. With 13600 acres of land which includes a members only ski area and golf course, as well as freestanding homes, elegant condominium associations and even huge ranches. Membership in “YC’ as members refer to it, offers exclusive use of seven restaurants with menus ranging from exotic Montana wild game to traditional family familiar meals, to classic club style dining. Several spas and health clubs are on site, a 75’ heated pool and golf and tennis facilities are among the many amenities offered with membership. Another distinction of “YC” is called “20 Below” appropriately named for an indoor retreat when the outdoor rages. This facility offers a wide range of indoor recreation which runs the gamut of sports including basketball, rock climbing and floor hockey with instruction offered in all of these disciplines. A game room, yoga loft, arts and craft center with classes offered make this a very popular way for members to wait for blue skies to return to the stunning mountains around their homes. 73 Upscale Living Magazine |

To own at Yellowstone Club, house sites range from $2.5M to $7.5m including the endless sky and restless mountain views. A few custom homes are currently listed between $6.5m and $20m. There are several complexes of condominiums within the boundaries of this private club, and the living within each has its own distinct style with prices ranging between $5m and $15m. Ranches vary in size and style and range between $18m and $25m currently. As with all things, this market changes but as of March 2017 this is the snapshot. For information contact: YCSales@yellowstoneclub.com Spanish Peaks Mountain Club is another of the private environments at Big Sky, spread out over 5700 acres. It contains a members only golf club and a members only ski club and has full access to the enormous variable terrain of Big Sky Ski Resort, Yellowstone National Park and world class fly fishing in the famous Gallatin, Yellowstone and Madison Rivers that run through and along its campus. Summer brings horseback riding trips through the wilderness, kayaking on the rivers, mountain biking in the rugged terrain and hiking in areas that you have all to yourself. Homes within the Spanish Peaks Mountain Club property range between $1.8m and $5.7m right now. House sites range from $300k to $1m. Condominiums are located in Meadow Village, near the Big Sky Golf Course. They are three story town houses, with Gourmet kitchens, upper story decks and lower level patios. There is a club house with a summer pool and outdoor hot tub and a game room. Access to cross country skiing and shuttle to the trails run in winter. At the moment

ranches. The prices vary, but the views are consistently beautiful. Real estate offerings start at just under $800,000 for a Saddle Ridge Townhome located adjacent to the Moonlight Lodge and run up to $16M for a custom home on three acres with ski trails meandering through the property. For more information contact: ania@bigsky.com or lkilgore@ lonemountainland.com So within the Big Sky basin the three clubs have distinctions ranging from a huge self contained resort, strictly members only including its private ski area which is Yellowstone Club, to the members only Spanish Peaks Mountain Club with gorgeous property and ski terrain access to Big Sky, and then there is the Moonlight Basin Club which is a private club located above and within the public Moonlight Lodge at Big Sky. there appears to be only one for sale listed at $5.9k. for information contact bdominick@lonemountainland.com The private Moonlight Basin Club is at the end of the Big Sky resort canyon under the towering majesty Lone Mountain. Inside the Moonlight Lodge, you can find a place for private club members to join friends for a hearty lunch or an apres cocktail surrounded by mountain goats climbing the huge stone fireplaces, gigantic timbers supporting a cathedral ceiling and dramatic views of the tallest peak in the region. Moonlight Basin Club has two campus’. Going over the mountain takes you to Ulery’s Lake and the new Reserve, a members only Jack Nicholson golf course, with its Back Nine Club House. MAGICAL MOZAMBIQUE | By HelĂŠne Ramackers

When an invitation appeared in my Inbox to visit Mozambique, I was hesitant at first. Not being much of a beach person but more of a bush gal, I pored over the itinerary and would definitely need some convincing. But when I saw that Nicky Arthur was the host, I knew that this would be too good of an opportunity to pass up.

O

ur journey from Cape Town to O.R. Tambo International airport starts at 5am. Upon arrival at O.R Tambo International, we are met by Nicky at the Airlink counter where a friendly ticket agent checks our luggage in and issues us with our boarding passes. We join the queue through security and passport control and meet up again at the boarding gate. The bus delivers us on the tarmac right next to the plane and as I negotiate the five steps into the Embraer ERJ 135-LR cabin, I am surprised with how spacious it is inside the aircraft. With a maximum of 37 passengers, a single row of seats on the one side, a double row on the other, you will never feel squashed.

We are assisted through customs and passport control and out the other side by an Azura representative, fast-tracking the process of getting us going for the third leg of our journey. We are met by the two pilots from CR Aviation, who usher us into the waiting Cessna 208B Caravan I. A short turn and taxi on the runway and the plane bursts into life as it takes off into the blue sky. From my window seat I am completely mesmerized by the views of the islands and the crystal-clear water. Soon we land at Quirimbas, where we drop off two honeymooners and take off again to our destination – Ibo Island. Steeped in antiquity, Ibo Island is a must-see for the historian in you. Situated in the far north east of Mozambique, you can sense the turmoil that took place here, dating back to the year 1600. The Arab influence recorded earlier turbulence, with the influx of traders using the coastline to create fortified trading posts. From this port of call, slaves, gold and ivory got shipped to the Arab world.

Doors closed, the captain starts the engines and after a short taxi, we are up in the air. Reaching an altitude of 36,000 ft and a cruising speed of 800 km/h, we are soon well on our way to Pemba, Mozambique. During the 2 hour 50 minute Airlink flight, we are presented with a delicious in-flight meal and a very welcome beverage. Stepping off an air-conditioned aircraft into the blistering heat and humidity at Pemba airport can be overwhelming, so dress appropriately (light and airy clothing) and have your bottle of water handy at all times. 89 Upscale Living Magazine |

A visit to the fort of St Joao Baptista has you witnessing the fine art of hand crafted jewellery being made by a local silversmith, using ancient Arab technique sand tools. During a guided stroll through Stone Town, you will notice many buildings in ruins while others have been lovingly restored. Dhow safaris are all the rage and clambering on to the deck of this vessel gives you a bird’s eye view of your liquid surroundings. Whether you fancy breakfast on an exposed sandbank or a swim with the dolphins, this can all be arranged. According to Nicky, the experience of snorkelling in the underwater marine world is remarkable and seeing dolphins mate right beneath her surprised her as much as it did them. Another highlight was snorkelling around the century-old coal steamer’s shipwreck and seeing the different types of corals. Ibo Island Lodge is the place to stay if you want to rest your head where rooms date back over 100 years and have been sensitively restored. Excitement is evident as we board the dhow and are collected in the middle of the ocean by speedboat. We are heading to Azura Quilálea in the Quirimbas Archipelago. Upon arrival, we are met quayside by the management team, Claudia Pellarini-Joubert, Leon Joubert and our butler, Ferai. We are offered cool refresher towels and while our luggage is whisked to our rooms, we are given welcome drinks in coconuts. Claudia discusses our itinerary with us and once we’re done, I scurry off to my room at breakneck speed to attempt to look presentable. The tropical climate has taken its toll on me and I need to cool down. My front door is ‘locked’ with a wooden beam that has a beautifully carved out elephant on it. As I open the front door of my Villa, I am met by the most spectacular sight of all the mod cons I could wish for on an island 11 degrees south of the Equator. After a refreshing shower, I feel somewhat human again and inspect what my accommodation has to offer. A king size bed with a mosquito net, an air conditioner, a bookshelf with some books should you get bored (that will never happen!), a desk to sit by if you wish to mail a postcard to yourself or loved ones back home, a seating area in the corner, some more chairs, an inclusive mini-bar, a coffee-making station, a bathroom with double vanities, shower, powder room and at the end of the bed an ice bucket with a bottle of French champagne! You would think that’s plentiful – but there’s more! I open the doors to my veranda and wow – I have my own beach! Plus an outdoor shower, some loungers and a daybed. Could this get any better? Yes! 90 Upscale Living Magazine |

The food here is beyond compare. Our first night’s dinner is served on the beach and pre-dinner drinks are Pina Coladas. On the menu is sweet potato & coconut soup, chef Julio’s shrimp and avocado with Quirimba island sauce for starters. For main course, there is a choice between baobab mangrove crab curry or Portuguese rump steak. For dessert the chocolate cheesecake is a winner! A great night’s sleep beckons and I awake early the next morning to take a walk around the island. The birds are twittering about and a hermit crab scampers across my path. Breakfast with delicious cappuccinos is served, sliced fruit plates and an enormous variety of hot options – from bacon to baked beans. Today is scuba diving or snorkelling day. While the scuba divers are kitted out by Claudia and Leon, I opt for a spa treatment ‘too much fun in the sun’. My therapist, Alima, goes to work and lathers my sunburnt back with the wonderfully soothing TheraNaka hydrating Aloe Ferox gel. She wakes me up so that I can wash the remaining product off my skin under the outdoor shower. Back in the Spa, she proceeds to send me back into a lull with the application of TheraNaka African recharge body oil. Fresh from her scuba with the consummate professional scuba instructor pair Claudia and Leon, Nicky reports that scuba diving off the house reef is something extraordinary – they saw turtles, ribbon eels and fish nurseries. This afternoon, we will be enjoying a picnic lunch at Turtle Beach. After a scenic walk, we are met with the phenomenal view of four bean bags placed on the beach and behind that, a table laid to perfection. The menu kicks off with avocado & lime soup, followed by spinach & pomegranate with feta and the most mouth-watering grilled prawns & lime espetada and chicken wraps with roast vegetable cous cous. For ‘sweet endings’ the juiciest fruit kebabs, made up of watermelon, mango, melon and kiwi fruit are served. A dip in the ocean concludes our picnic and as we head back, we notice a storm brewing on the horizon. Our secret location dinner is cancelled due to the weather and instead a glorious feast is served in the jellyfish restaurant, comprising of the most spectacular mix of seafood – prawns, lobster tail, crab claws and for the carnivores there is grilled fillet of meat. Dessert is mini banana tempura bites with vanilla custard & chocolate sauce or sorbet.

T R A V E L Sunrise on our last day is a sight to behold – golden hues peer out from the edge of the horizon. After breakfast, we go on a low tide marine adventure walk on the exposed substrate to experience the array of marine critters and birdlife. We take a quick dip in the cove off the beach where dozens of crabs are climbing up the rocks as the tide hasn’t come in yet. It is time to check out and after a brief lunch, we make our way to the waiting speedboat for our 20-minute transfer to Quirimbas island. We are taken to the airstrip by Land Rover where the same two pilots from CR Aviation collect us for our flight of fancy back to Pemba airport. Down below, the mangroves, palm trees and islands beckon. The azure colour of the water looks so inviting that I make a silent promise to return again. This was paradise uncovered.
