As one of the best-selling classical musicians of all time, and one of the biggest solo male touring artists in the world, he’s topped the international charts an impressive 30 times. This fun-loving musician thrills audiences around the globe with his impressive live shows… a “modern-day Strauss” on a mission to get the whole world waltzing. 15 Upscale Living Magazine |

ulti-award-winning André Rieu talks to Angela Sara West about the secrets to his sensational success, collaborating with Sir Anthony Hopkins and The Hoff, his forthcoming North American tour and his fairytale home in Holland, a castle made famous by D’Artagnan.

Dutch violinist and conductor, André Rieu, is a first-class act. With an impressive career spanning over 30 years, the charismatic entertainer delights fans around the world with his eclectic mix of waltz, musical scores, opera, pop and easy listening, and is a multi-platinum musical phenomenon like no other. The high-spirited musician is universally recognised as a musical genius with the energy of a rock star, and acclaimed for his innate ability to create a symphonic party out of pop songs fused with classical music. Initiating a worldwide revival of waltz music, the charming classical comic brings not only humour to the world, but has the rare ability to convert even non-classical music lovers, touching the hearts of millions of people who discover a whole new musical world and get excited about classical music.

He says his concerts are about love and joy, and reveals that the most rewarding aspect of what he does is witnessing his fans’ enjoyment of his work. “Seeing all those happy people in the audience…. the fun they are having, the kisses, the dancing… People write me letters, saying, “André, I needed two weeks to come down after your concert.” Isn’t that wonderful?!!” Cutting a romantic figure on stage, the conductor of waltz-based classics and his enthusiastic orchestra put their hearts and soul into each performance, injecting passion and emotion into every note, resulting in very happy, clappy, toe-tapping audiences, with whom he has a great rapport. Swaying with the music, clapping, dancing, jumping up and down… it ALL happens when this music maestro performs. The violin Wunderkind is the very proud owner of a very valuable instrument which often makes an appearance on stage; his precious Stradivarius from 1732. “Yes. My first one was from 1667, but it was a little bit too small and more appropriate for a young girl, who now plays it. This one is perfect. It has a rich, passionate sound which reminds of me of the warm voice of Maria Callas.”

With his talk-of-the-town tours outselling A-list artists including Madonna, Coldplay and Elton John, he has sold over 40 million CDs and DVDs worldwide, received close to 500 Platinum and almost 300 Gold awards and had billions of views on YouTube. Last year, André’s successful shows outsold any other male touring artist in the world, including Bruce Springsteen. If anyone knows how to stage a grand stage show, it’s André. With his Johann Strauss Orchestra, occasional choir and top-class soloists in tow, this international superstar has travelled the world, staging spectacular extravaganzas and show-stopping performances everywhere from London’s Royal Albert Hall to NYC’s Radio City Music Hall. His lively concerts display a winning formula of sensational music, interspersed with romantic moments and witty twists, and he delights audiences everywhere he goes. It’s always one big party whenever this flamboyant musical star is in town! MUSICIAN ON A MISSION The amiable Dutchman tells me he feels honoured to be dubbed the modern “King of the Waltz” by the world’s media. Playing music from all genres and decades, he’s the king of crossover, too. “I am very proud… But I play so much more than waltzes. There is really only ONE true King of the Waltz and that is my idol, Johann Strauss.” Following in the footsteps of the great Austrian composer, André is a born entertainer with boundless enthusiasm plus a great sense of humour, which he brings to his uplifting shows, which showcase superlative sets matched with flawless melodies. Well-known for his infectious joie de vivre, his unique, unorthodox approach to classical music makes for an atmosphere that is electric, with sets that are out of this world. The energetic orchestra leader encourages his audiences to jump out of their seats and dance in the aisles, makes jokes, tells stories, and even indulges in a bit of slapstick comedy in between performing some of the most beautiful waltzes in the world, along with romantic songs and much-loved hits from musicals and films. Jam-packed with surprises, we defy anyone not to fall under this magical musician’s seductive spell! For André, the excellence of the music is equally as important as the staging of his concerts. Exuding emotional melodies, a good deal of humour and top-class international soloists, his enchanting events engage and captivate audiences, bringing the glamour of the Viennese ballroom to millions across the world. 16 Upscale Living Magazine |

HOW IT ALL BEGAN… Born in the Dutch city of Maastricht, André was surrounded by music from birth and discovered his profound passion for music at a very young age. Along with Strauss, his music icon as a child was the celebrated classical composer, Mozart. “My mother always told a story that when I heard Mozart as a small child, I’d always say ‘Mooooi’, which means ‘Beautiful’.” “My father was a conductor, so I can’t remember a time without music in our house. I had five siblings and all of my brothers and sisters played an instrument. I started playing the violin when I was five years old, but also studied the flute, piano and oboe. My mother picked the violin for me… and she was right. I loved the sound of it.” It wasn’t long before the violin virtuoso discovered he had a very special talent. “I don’t believe I was a “child prodigy” - these children work very hard, studying for hours and hours per day. For me, playing an instrument was normal… I thought everyone did! I asked the other children at school, “Which violin do you play?” I simply felt at an early age that the violin was for me, and I fell in love with my teacher, which helped a lot, ha-ha!! André continued his musical training at conservatoires in Liège in Belgium and Maastricht, and received his prestigious “Premier Prix” degree from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. PIZZA PLANS At one point, the acclaimed conductor and violinist went off-piste, swapping his stick’n’strings for a piece of a pizza project. “My wife, Marjorie, and I had a very strict education, but when we were students,

O FF II LL EE PP RR O we tried to escape all of that and decided to break free. I locked up my violin, she threw away her books and we planned to open a pizzeria, in which I would play when the Pizza Paganini was being served. But that idea only lasted for three weeks, and I figured that if I wanted to play Paganini, I’d better go back and study!” A MILESTONE 30 YEARS OF THE JSO In 1987, he founded André Rieu Productions company and his beloved Johann Strauss Orchestra, to which, he says, he is “practically married”. “I started with a small ensemble of 12 people. The first rehearsal was at my sons’ school and it then grew bigger and bigger. We started playing at retirement homes, small theatres, then arenas and finally stadiums, like Toronto and Melbourne. It makes me so happy because we have reached people with what we do.” André’s energetic orchestra now comprises a 60-piece ensemble and marked its milestone 30th anniversary this year at his eagerly-anticipated annual concert in Maastricht, this year screened live into over 500 cinemas here in the UK. PITCH PERFECT! André’s big break came in 1994, with the recording of the Waltz No. 2 by Shostakovich. The following year, he scored the perfect goal... Performing the same piece at AFC Ajax’s home Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich put André not only on the sporting, but also the world music map overnight. Ajax went on to win and who else but André could have a football crowd waving flags, humming along and swaying to Shostakovich?!! “My wife named it the ‘Second Waltz’. It sold 850,000 copies in the Netherlands alone. It was truly amazing that people sang it in football stadiums… you can still watch it on YouTube.” FROM SMALL TO SILVER SCREEN SUCCESS From performing on Dancing with the Stars to his fascinating TV series, Welcome to my World, following the ups and downs and backstage goings-on of the violin wizard and his orchestra around the world, along with TV appearances, André’s set new standards on the big screen, too. The broadcast of his 2015 Maastricht Concert marked his biggest success yet, breaking the UK box office records for a cinema music event. Screened live in cinemas, it took over £1.4m, making it the highest-grossing cinema music event of all time, surpassing One Direction and Take That. “That was fantastic! It shows that our music is really for everyone.” The concert was beamed live into cinemas in over 30 countries worldwide, including the US, Brazil, Canada and South Africa. André also topped the box office in Australia, Denmark and, of course, his native Netherlands.

He has also been bestowed with the prestigious French decoration of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, while in his hometown, he clinched the Gold Medal of Honour from Maastricht’s Mayor Gerd Leers – the city’s greatest distinction. “I think I am proudest owner of the “Grand Gold Decoration for Services to the Republic of Austria”. It’s a very prestigious award, and to receive this from a nation with such exceptional musical traditions, where composers like Mozart, Schubert, Strauss lived, is amazing.” SUCCESS SECRETS As the head of a flourishing entertainment company, taking care of the creative side as well as business matters, André presides over a global business empire. “Everything we earn, we put back into the company. I have the largest private orchestra in the world and more than 100 people on the payroll, including my administration staff. It’s a big family business.” He credits much of his success to his wife, Marjorie, and has faith in the power of positive thinking: “I was born lucky. It is really my character. I am a happy person. I can get impatient, but I never get mad.” The biggest challenge of his career? “Convincing managers, label people and critics that my music is for everyone. For younger and older people, for families, for the professor or the cleaning lady… not for an elite.” André believes that everyone can enjoy classical music and has been instrumental in achieving his aim to revive 19th-century waltz music. What drives this music maestro? “Love and passion… Walt Disney once said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” I always dreamed of travelling the world with my own orchestra. And I love to be on stage playing all that beautiful music.” With a gift for touching hearts, his unique approach to classical music and engaging spectators is part of his winning formula. “We are very individual. Every concert is different.” He says encouraging audience interaction has been instrumental in achieving his melodic path to the top. “Communication and emotions are the secret to my success, I think. I look my audience in the eye, I talk to them and ask them to join us.” The born entertainer speaks six different languages, Dutch, English, German, French, Italian and Spanish, and can therefore ask his fans to participate by standing up from their seats and waltzing in the aisles in all six! SECOND-TO-NONE STAGE SETS

GONGS GALORE! The superstar of classical music has notched up no less than 30 no. 1 chart positions worldwide and is the only classical artist to enter Pollstar’s Top 10. As the most successful classical artist in the world, the multi-talented musician’s success and emphatic contribution to classical music across over three decades has resulted in countless coveted accolades. Along with Brit Awards, André’s won World Music Awards, a Gramophone Award and a Dutch Export Award among numerous others, celebrating his unrivalled talent. How does it feel to receive such prestigious awards and honours? “It’s wonderful, of course, because it’s proof that we have reached the hearts of millions of people around the world,” He says music is very important to the world. “Especially in times like these. Wherever we play, people always seem to forget their worries for a moment. That’s one of the most beautiful and powerful things of making music.” 20 Upscale Living Magazine |

The international sensation again made history in the UK by having the highest- charting classical album this century, was crowned no. 1 Classic Artist in the US (with the Wall Street Journal calling him a “Maestro for the Masses”) and has been the highest-selling music artist in Australia for the past five years, dominating the DVD charts Down Under with nine DVDs in the Top 10.

A live André Rieu show makes for quite the spectacle… Extravagant with a capital “E”, his showy stage sets are nothing less than breathtaking. Elaborate global extravaganzas with no expense spared, the classical conductor’s concerts have seen Mary Poppins flying over the audience, life-size ballrooms and ice rinks, and an enchanting Venetian-style set complete with a Doge’s Palace, Rialto Bridge, ornate Italian fountain and a colourful Venetian masquerade. His lifesize replicas of Austria’s Imperial Schönbrunn Palace saw the biggest stage set ever to go on tour. The sensational set was 10-stories high and longer than a football field, featured fountains, a skating rink, a ballroom dance floor plus a state carriage covered in real gold! For the most excessive and extravagant show ever to take to the road, he had to build two sets to fit into his touring schedule, which included his largest concert ever, to an audience of 38,000 in Melbourne, Australia.

P R O F I L E Hollywood hobnobbing with Sir Anthony Hopkins & cooking up a storm with The Hoff! André’s adored by A-list names and once recorded a waltz penned by his hero of the big screen, Sir Anthony Hopkins, and named an album after it. “Sir Anthony composed this waltz named And The Waltz Goes On when he was a student but it had never been performed,” André explains. “His wife saw me on US TV and thought my orchestra should perform her husband’s waltz. His office called me and we got together to collaborate on it. Sir Anthony is a wonderful person and my favourite actor. It was very exciting and inspiring to meet and work with him.” And it’s mutual admiration - Sir Anthony is a fan of André too! He and his wife flew by private jet to Maastricht to attend André’s hometown concerts, where André performed it for the first time to a large crowd. Sir Anthony said it was a was “a dream come true” and that he was “totally knocked out” by it. André also recently teamed up with David Hasselhoff as part of his 30th anniversary JSO celebrations in Maastricht. The Hoff made quite an entrance, bursting onto the stage as a guest singer in his famous Knight Rider car, KITT, and had the crowd rocking to his hit Looking for Freedom, Elvis’ Love Me Tender and George Baker’s Una Paloma Blanca. “There was immediate sympathy between us. I knew at once that I’d love to work with him. David is such a professional and was a huge success with the audience. We were both very happy!” THE KING OF THE WALTZ MEETS THE QUEEN OF BRITAIN André’s no stranger to the international pop charts… From ABBA’s Mamma Mia and Michael Jackson’s Smile to Celine Dion’s emotional chart topper, My Heart Will Go On, the baroque pop performer has celebrated them all. The musician he’d most like to perform with? “Bruce Springsteen! I really admire him.” So, he admires “The Boss”, is inspired by Andrew Lloyd Webber and once took to the stage alongside contemporary artists Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus and Anastacia, along with Michael Bublé, Katherine Jenkins, Bette Midler and Whoopi Goldberg to perform for Queen Elizabeth II, before meeting his royal fan backstage. “It was a great honour and my orchestra and I were all very excited. Her great, great grandmother, Queen Victoria, loved to waltz and made the dance popular in the UK. The Queen was very friendly and thanked us for the performance. She enjoyed it very much!” To celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday, he wrote a special piece of music titled The Windsor Waltz, which opens with a vibrant fanfare and pays homage to British favourites including Rule Britannia and Pomp and Circumstance, before launching into wonderful waltzes and culminating with a hint of God Save The Queen. In 2013, André wrote the Coronation Waltz and gave a Coronation concert, which was broadcast live on national television, in Amsterdam’s Museum Square in honour of the inauguration of the new King WillemAlexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands. TAKING THE BIGGEST SHOW ON EARTH ALL AROUND THE WORLD From New Zealand to Mexico, and the UK to the USA, André certainly lives up to his other nickname, “The Flying Dutchman”. With his orchestra in tow, he tours on five continents, playing around 120 concerts a year, establishing him as one of the top 10 touring acts in the world. Four sets of stages, costumes and instruments, along with cooks, a doctor, a fitness instructor and custom-built Mercedes-Benz tour buses make life on the road as seamless as possible. In 1998, André was on Spanish soil, filming his Romantic Moments 24 Upscale Living Magazine |

DVD in Mallorca’s medieval palace in Raixa, where he played dreamy songs including Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet and Plaisir d’Amour. The internationally-renowned maestro has many favourite places and venues to perform. “It’s hard to say… People all over the world are so happy when they come to our concerts. It doesn’t matter where they come from, the moment we start to play for them, the audience and the orchestra seem to become one big, happy family or band of friends. Music really unites people. I have that same feeling in every place or venue I go to, whether it’s Europe, Asia, South America or the United States.” His epic 2014 World Tour outsold Ed Sheeran, Rod Stewart and Beyoncé, while he embarks on another World Tour in Germany in early 2018. His current tour sees him in countries including France, the UK, the Netherlands, Austria, Chile and Mexico. Well-known in the US for his wildly-popular PBS specials, André’s American US tour kicks off on 19th October and takes in Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Diego, Los Angeles, San José, Sacramento, Fresno, Tacoma, Portland, Tampa, Orlando and Sunrise. “I’m really looking forward to tour the United States and Canada again,” he says. “Our North American fans have a great attitude and always show their enthusiasm right from the very first note.” What can fans expect? “I love to surprise my audience, so I am not going to tell you in detail, but the program will be a mix of waltzes, film scores, musicals, folk songs and, of course, some great American Classics. There will be many international soloists, my 60-piece Johann Strauss Orchestra and me, of course! We will open our hearts for you and will make you dance in the aisles and give you an evening you will never forget!” André’s new album, Shall We Dance, is out this month. “It features some of the world’s most beloved classic songs including The Blue Danube, Love in Venice, Bolero, Zorba’s Dance and more. It will also include a separate, live DVD.” KING OF THE CASTLE… CHILDHOOD DREAMS REALLY CAN COME TRUE! He may regularly travel the globe but, for André, home is where his heart is, his home city of Maastricht, the capital of the Dutch Province of Limburg, where he owns a romantic, and legendary, castle. Dating back to1492, De Torentjes (meaning “The small towers”) is Maastricht’s only castle and legend has it that it was here that the real D’Artagnan (on whom Dumas’ character was based) had his last breakfast before he died in battle serving King Louis XIV. André took piano lessons in his jaw-dropping 15th-century home as a child and dreamed of living in it and filling it with chandeliers and paintings. That dream is now a reality. “As a boy, I loved the The Adventures of Tintin comic, in which the Captain Haddock character owned a castle. Ever since, I’d dreamed about owning one myself but my wife said, “You’ll have to sell a lot more CDs for that”. So I did, ha ha!” Known as the modern “King of the Waltz”, André is also a true “King of Romance”. He and Marjorie, his childhood sweetheart, have been married for over 40 years and have two sons and five grandchildren. Marjorie manages the concerts and creates the sets and costumes while their son, Pierre, now manages the business side of things, allowing André to concentrate on the musical aspects. Their other son, Marc, is an artist, and André’s imposing castle serves as the perfect exhibition space for his paintings. Comprising 27 rooms, a recording studio, its own travel agency, a kindergarten for the orchestra members’ children and a complete atelier in which the costumes for André’s concerts are made (the female orchestra

members wear pastel silk ball gowns that he designs himself!), the impressive property also boasts an André-designed orangery, a grandiose greenhouse which is André’s personal sanctuary, filled with rare species of butterflies, koi and other tropical fish, exotic birds, palms and flowers, including ornate air-borne orchids. The spectacular grounds boast extensive gardens and this sensational stately setting, encompassing the surreal, dreamlike backdrop of Andrٞé’s fairytale castle, makes the most magical setting for his majestic Christmas and grand New Year concerts. HIGHLIGHTS & DREAMS There have been numerous highlights for the classical king of the stage. “Oh, so many… the performances in Vienna, including the World Stadium tour with a full replica of the Schönbrunn Castle, New York and our open-air concerts each summer on the Vrijthof, where this year we welcomed 110,000 people from over 80 countries.” His “dream” waltzes to perform? “There are so many beautiful waltzes, it is as if I was too choose between my children. But I would probably say, my dream waltzes are the Beautiful Blue Danube, which I play at every concert. I have also immensely enjoyed performing Sir Anthony Hopkins’ composition And the Waltz Goes On. A waltz can be happy and sad at the same time. It can also be romantic and joyful… It has every feeling in one composition… and it is very difficult to play!”

REACHING FOR THE STARS & THE MOON… As an avid conservationist and peace lover, André also carries out benefit concerts for charity. “My wife and I have been backing a project in Burkina Faso, supporting the people who work so hard to conserve their natural environment because the desert takes much of their land. They plant trees etc. to fight it back.” With his motto “Live your dream… don’t dream your life,” André is also an aspiring astronaut. Fascinated with space travel, he is in talks with Sir Richard Branson to build a concert hall on the moon to enable us, one day, to waltz in space. His main mission? To become the first artist to play on the moon. “Yes! That would be a dream come true. You’ll all be invited!” 

er translucent sculptures emulate the transparent characteristics of jellyfish and the multifaceted talents of Daniela Forti know no bounds. Born in Rome, her studies in architecture and interior design formed a benchmark for her transference to the fine art of glass design.

Her development of a particular expressive mastery of the intricacies of glass created a brilliant manifestation of the divergent process that links fluidity and heat to colors as to glass in its natural state. She collaborated with glassmakers after she moved to Tuscany in 1982 where she researched the dichotomy between light and glass. Each of her brilliant pieces is manufactured by hand, using a technique known as “vetrofusione”; by melting glass, the creations are unusual, exotically original worlds where this material acquires vivid colors and pliable shapes, and light gains a new, abstract essence. Through her ingenious designs and knowledge of her art, she gives new life to marine creatures by using sensual shapes and incredible colors. MARCHESA

Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim literally were on the top of their game stamping their collection with what has become the house aesthetic. Classic men’s shirts and coats turned backward and blown up into oversized dresses worn over snap-up windowpane-printed pants. Tipped cardigans in red and white and a navy baseball jacket twisted, cut out and unsnapped to reveal shoulders and collar bones. Worn over striped sequined fringed skirts, the knits giving a fresh casual attitude to evening-wear.

At Marchesa, there was a continuing fairy-tale story, not bookended so much by collections but each dress was unto its own. Sort of like keepsake pieces, not driven by trends—pieces for you to pass on. Pieces of art & craftsmanship if you will.

A style of polished deconstruction translated to an attitude of allure both confident and fun. The clothes were steeped in playfulness, here heightened by the Americana and university motifs, but the execution was always adult.

Fluffy tulle gowns came covered in hand-dyed organza cherry blossoms and wisteria vines, and models had petals woven into their hair.

Certain gowns required hundreds of hours of intensive handwork; heirloom quality.

With Marchesa, it’s best to consider each look individually, rather than view the pieces as a cohesive group yet the collection was cohesive and truly beautiful.

RALPH LAUREN For his show, we traveled to Lauren’s famed Bedford Mills, New York. There at his larger than life garage, we took a peek under the hood of his obsession. Ralph Lauren’s love of fashion is perhaps second only to his fascination with cars. Ferraris, Porsches, and the aforementioned Bugatti—were lined up on the runway as models strode past their curvilinear bodies. As if from his own front row seat was a 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic, worth an estimated $40 million and arguably one of the world’s most expensive cars. At the opening came a parade of tailored suiting followed by glamorous red carpet options, many of which were directly inspired by the cars dotted around the room. Even the most feminine pieces were not too far removed from the energy of the racetrack, with dramatic ball skirts and patent leather bustiers that recalled the primary color palette of sleek 1980s sports cars. The collection was — Totally in line with the American luxury lifestyle Mr. Lauren has carved out for himself over the past 50 years. After several news cycles fueled by headlines about New York’s top fashion talent defecting for a brighter City of Light, those who have stayed put used their runways to show their American pride. These designers were not only in the race to be the best they were winging the race. 33 Upscale Living Magazine |

QUICK TIPS TO UPGRADE YOUR

consciousness | By Christopher Pinckley

T

he world is changing and doing so in quite dramatic fashion. Things are not the same as they used to be. We are evolving as human beings and beginning to understand that there is much more to us and being human than we previously thought. In the past two decades we’ve learned that we not only have a physical body, but also a mental body, an emotional body, and a spiritual body. We’ve learned that, in order to be truly happy, one has to honor each of these bodies by paying attention to them and working on and within them. The result of acknowledging that you have these different bodies and natural conclusion to working with each of them is the cultivation of inner peace within you. Some people mistake happiness as the end goal when the reality is that happiness is merely one tributary of the river of peace. To be truly happy,

one has to have the cultivation of inner peace ranking higher in importance than the pursuit of happiness as a goal. Since the cultivation of inner peace is a lifelong goal and most people are incessantly busy then we have to create shortcuts to access these various bodies within your consciousness. A good short cut can upgrade your consciousness and help you to make permanent, positive changes that enhance your lifestyle. Here are 3 Quick Tips to Upgrade Your Consciousness TIP 1: RAPID BELLY BREATHING – Traditionally, this is a Vedic Science adopted by the Yogis around 5,000 years ago. There are various techniques ranging in duration and intensity from hours on end designed to go deep into your consciousness to a mere sixty seconds designed to bring you back to the present moment. What I am suggesting is five quick minutes done whenever you feel anxiety, depression, compulsion, anger, or any other unwanted emotion. This exercise is very simple: sit in a meditative posture, preferably alone for five minutes, and breathe in and out rapidly through your nose and into your stomach. You do not need to breathe deeply into your stomach. Doing so is healthy and beneficial,

37 Upscale Living Magazine |

OCTOBER 2017 www.upscalelivingmag.com

HEALTH + BEAUTY

but that’s for another exercise. For now, you are attempting to pull the breath down into your pelvis, towards your perineum. Doing this rapid breathing exercise for five short minutes will fully center you, completely eliminate any and all feelings of anxiety and depression, and bring you back into the present moment. Do this exercise whenever you feel any negative emotion and you will be well on your path to creating the feeling of consistent inner peace. TIP 2: COULD I LET THIS GO? – A startling revelation for many is the realization that the ego enjoys rehashing problems. In fact, the ego thrives on rehashing problems and issues. Why? It’s because the act of rehashing issues over and over again ensures its survival. This is also why some people can go to the same therapist for decades on end and still need that therapist’s support. Instead of authentic deep work and integration, the ego has adopted the therapy as part of its identity. Rather, what if all it took was the consistent letting go of issues to be permanently done with them? What if trying to intellectually understand the issue was actually perpetuating its existence? In one of the most bizarre twists in the history of human evolution it turns out that we can begin to heal ourselves at the deepest level when we cease the need to understand the issue. Instead, ask yourself this question: could I allow this issue to come up 38 Upscale Living Magazine |

to the surface to be here with me as best I can? After a minute ask yourself another question: could I let this go? Finally, ask yourself, would I be willing to let this go? Five minutes of doing this could very well yield the same results as five years of the old methods of traditional therapy. When you allow your issue to be with you unconditionally you may actually encounter the suppressed emotional charge behind it. If you are able to fully surrender to it when it surfaces then it will move through you, yielding a permanent integration. Doing this whenever you feel uncomfortable emotions will give you a permanent upgrade in your consciousness. TIP 3: STORY MONITOR – Have you ever paid attention to the sheer number of stories your mind creates throughout the day? If you pay attention, which means being conscious of your thoughts, you will come to recognize that your mind is incessantly creating and attaching stories to the various people and scenarios that you encounter throughout your day. None of these stories has any basis in reality as they are all based upon the suppressed emotional charges and subconscious emotional patterning from your past. What would happen if you could begin to drop each of these stories as you become aware of them? What if, each time you caught yourself in the middle of one of these self created stories about the person standing next to

OCTOBER 2017 www.upscalelivingmag.com

you, you were able to simply let it fall away? As it turns out, if you can do this, you will feel much more peaceful. Additionally, your interactions with the people around you will be much more productive and positive. Try it for just one day, try becoming aware of and dropping the stories as they come up. See if you can actually catch yourself in the process of creating stories and simply let them fall away. If you can do it for one day, then go for three. Then, go for a whole week. Doing this is an easy, accessible way to upgrade your consciousness. The results will be less energy expended in negative worrying about other people, places, and things, and more energy available for you to continue creating what you want. MORE MAGIC The joy of doing these quick, easy exercises is to access and bring back the magic in your life. Life was meant to be full of magic and fun and too often we wind up in the realm of the ego: where dwell seriousness, stress, anxiety, depression, and frustration. With as little as five minutes here, five minutes there, your life will begin to take on that magical quality so that you can enjoy yourself and your lifestyle without feeling like an emotional hostage any longer. You will be on the road to authentic inner peace and emotional freedom.

P R O F I L E

When and how did your journey as a businessman begin? I guess it began because of my interest in soccer. I was always interested in sports, particularly soccer, from a very early age. One of my first jobs was working as an intern at a public relations firm that promoted marathons, and I’ve worked in sports media ever since. In 2001, I became the CEO of Milan Channel, the official TV channel of AC Milan football club, and guided the international development of the channel. I was a fan of the team since my childhood, so this was a huge privilege. In 2004, I set up and ran MP & Silva, a sports media rights company that now has twenty offices around the world. When I sold the majority of my shares in MP & Silva in 2016, the company was a world leader in TV rights distribution. Last year, I established Silva International Investments, which manages and invests in assets across multiple sectors such as media, sports, tech, entertainment, art and real estate. How has coming from a family business background, where your family is said to be ‘one of the most important industrial families in Italy’, shaped your business acumen? My parents instilled in me a strong work ethic from an early age. This discipline combined with creativity have been indispensable qualities for my career. What / who do you draw inspiration from? From my father and his values; family, a strong work ethic and moral values. What are / have been your biggest challenges in your business career? When I first launched MP & Silva, I essentially needed to change the way TV rights were acquired and distributed in Italy. To avoid getting too technical, I’ll just say that the first three to four years of the company were amongst the most challenging and required much perseverance and strategic thinking. Important lessons along the way? Understanding that an idea is only 20 percent of the work while execution is the other 80 percent of the work. The favorite part of your job? I’ve been very fortunate in my career that there have been lots of highlights. My favorite aspect is probably that I’ve been able to make a profession out of working in or with the sports industry, which I’m immensely passionate about. What is the best thing about being a businessman? It’s rewarding to see what you’ve created. Throughout my career, I’m proud to have been able to assemble teams of talented professionals that are very focused and able to successfully work together toward a common goal of always building something valuable. 42 Upscale Living Magazine |

You have quite a number of varying businesses – Miami Football Club, Silva International, MP & Silva, MP Management, Mast Capital, The Riccardo Silva Collection, Musik and SportBusiness Group. What is your involvement in each of them and tell us an anecdote about each of them? My assets now sit under the umbrella of my investment company, Silva International Investments. It invests in and helps manage companies that I’m interested in across various sectors. Its portfolio of investments includes MP & Silva, Mast Capital, MP Management, The Miami FC, Musik and SportBusiness Group. I have a selective investment criteria, so these are all companies I feel match my investment philosophy. My team and I are heavily involved in working with each of the assets to provide support where necessary to help each of the assets expand and grow. I’m not sure I can tell you an anecdote from each of the companies but I think you can imagine that when you are working across sports, fashion, entertainment, it makes for a pretty exciting range of opportunities! I’m very lucky indeed. You also have a philanthropic side. Tell us a bit more about that. I’m involved with a number of charities and projects in Europe, Africa and the U.S., in particular Miami. I’m involved with Play for Change, amfAR, Mount Sinai Medical Center and the New World Symphony. I strongly believe in giving back, and I align myself with charities with causes that are important to me. Describe yourself in three words. Respectful, grateful, ambitious. How do you balance your career and family life? Spending time with my family is very important to me. I have two young boys who keep me on my toes and, even though I travel a lot because of my job, we speak every day. Like many young boys – and just like me – they are obsessed with soccer so when we are together it usually involves watching or playing soccer together. What do you do for fun? I enjoy traveling, spending time with my children, following and playing sports. When I’m in Europe, I’ll typically go and see a team like Chelsea or Arsenal play a game. When I’m in Miami, I obviously go and see The Miami FC play. If you hadn’t become a businessman, what would you have become? I always thought I’d work for my family’s business in the chemical industry, until I developed an interest in the television rights industry, which was a new field in the 90’s. Any parting words? Be passionate about what you do. The best advice I can give is have passion, be organized and be focused. 

ondolozi. The very name conjures up images of becoming enamoured by the majestic reality of witnessing copious leopard sightings. Since I can remember, and became aware of the existence of Londolozi somewhere in the late 1980’s, it has been my deepest desire to visit the place where leopards take centre stage. When the opportunity presented itself to visit the place of my reveries, I was met with the quandary of who would accompany me on this journey to the habitation where rosetted creatures reign.

The decision was simplified by the fact that my daughter sees herself as a leopard aficionado and at 11 years old, she would revel in a trip to a place of such beauty and the possibility of feasting eyes on her (and my) favorite mammal. Our trip starts at Cape Town International Airport where our Airlink Avro RJ85 flight takes us directly to Nelspruit International Airport, which saves the precious time you might have with the flight being a mere 2 hours and 35 minutes. At Nelspruit International Airport, we are welcomed by an Airlink representative, who takes us to the Transfer lounge area before our onward journey with Airlink’s Lodge Link service to the

Londolozi Airstrip in Airlink’s Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, another ingenious way Airlink has designed to make air travel so much simpler to connect you from the city to the doorstep of your safari destination; it is hassle-free. Field Guide Greg Pingo is at the Airstrip to meet us and transport us to the lodge. We are heartily welcomed at Founder’s Camp where we will be staying for two nights. Camp Manager Simon Sambo is at the ready to greet us and ushers us to the deck, where the most delectable lunch is being served. We feast on the incredibly tasty and tender 1926 Burger, consisting of 100% Rump mince, BBQ and parmesan fries, attentively served by our butler Remind Mgwena. The food choices are extensive and the lunch menu changes every day. Today there is Fish & Chips - Beer battered seabass with tartare sauce; Kale Caesar – Kale, Chickpea croutons, Boiled Egg, Parmesan shavings; Middle Eastern Chicken Skewer – Cumin yoghurt, Pita, Micro salad; Charcuterie – Gorgonzola wedge, Camembert, Gherkins, Welsh Cheddar, Rocket, Parma Ham, Baby Ciabatta, Onion Marmalade; Cake of the Day – Lemon & Yoghurt. It is time for our first game drive and Greg, together with tracker Equalizer Ndlovu will see what they can find. The unusual sighting of a wildebeest hanging around with a herd of impalas has everyone in stitches. A whitebacked vulture is perched on a bare tree branch against the bluest of skies. He eventually takes flight, showcasing his impressive wingspan. A lilacbreasted roller is showing off his beautiful colors and a bit further in the grasslands, a rhino is peacefully grazing while its calf seems jumbled by the windy conditions, scurrying about in riotous fashion. A cute tree squirrel is staring intently at us. We approach the Mhangeni pride, all seventeen of them lying about, soaking up the warming rays of 50 Upscale Living Magazine

the sun. The lioness is trying to avoid pesky flies by throwing her head backwards, displaying a protruding tooth on her bottom jaw. Our drinks stop is next to the watering hole where piles of dung have us and the other guests on our vehicle negotiating the area to evade stepping in droppings. A few drinks and eats later it is all but forgotten. Back at Founders we are escorted to our room by the night porter, ensuring guest safety. Despite the living area being fenced, animals might still venture into camp on occasion. This is the first time I can delight in the luxurious surrounds of our accommodation, Room 8, set adjacent to the dining deck and boma area. Two three-quarter beds are covered in silky white bedding with handmade scatter cushions adding an element of contrast. Comfort and class is intertwined with stylish furnishings whilst maintaining a feeling of nature by juxtaposing smidgens of colour against neutral fittings. The clean lines and white amenities in the bathroom add to the emphasis of unclutteredness which is the perfect antidote to the overwhelming feeling of incomparable wilderness extending from your deck view. Dinner is served in the Boma where an enormous fire has been ignited to ward off the evening chill. Tonight Sous Chef Sipho Khoza takes us through the menu choices and they are Cauliflower, Dill & Cumin Soup - Garnish chargrilled florets and spring onion; Salad Selection – rocket, lettuce, cucumber, cocktail tomatoes, parmesan shavings, olives, feta and cashews with Londolozi sexy dressing; Salmon with lemon herb cream sauce; Fillet with mustard sauce; Chickpeas with spiced tomatoes & spinach; Chef ’s Selection; Sliced crispy potatoes with rosemary & garlic, White chocolate & granadilla mousse / berries / chocolate bark with pistachio & cranberries. To conclude the evening, the Londolozi Choir entertain the guests with a divine song and dance routine.

A prelude to a good night’s sleep for me is having a cleansing shower. At Londolozi you can either immerse yourself in your bath overlooking the river with the soothing suds of the specially crafted 1926 Fragrance Range created by Shan Varty or indulge in the wonderfully fragrant and generously sized glass bottles containing Shower Gel, Shampoo and Conditioner. Morning has broken and so has the wonderful smell of fresh pre-gamedrive coffee. The table is laden with straight out-of-the-oven baked bread, rusks, fruit skewers, porridge, apples and oranges. Greg is heading in a Southerly direction and we stumble upon a herd of elephants feeding on the shrubbery. A young elephant is extracting a branch from his mother’s mouth. Further north, a hyena is lying in a watering hole, cooling himself before the day starts to warm up.

Much to my chagrin, the malingering leopards are playing truant today. As I finish my thought, Equalizer points towards the camouflaged bushes and then we see her – the exquisite Nhlanguleni 3:2 Leopard. She crouches in the grass, seemingly stalking something. She disappears out of sight and all we can spot is her outline as she moves swiftly through the grass. Suddenly she re-emerges and positions herself on a large flat rock, surveying her surroundings. Breakfast is served on the deck and while I feast on a delicious Londolozi breakfast, consisting of eggs, bacon, black mushrooms, oven roasted thyme tomatoes, rocket and sausage of the day, my daughter opts for croissants and pancakes. She is scheduled to have a Cub’s Den activity and excitement abounds and she wolfs down her food. The family element is a very important factor at Londolozi and kids are offered a wide range of activi-

ties to keep them occupied. With the expertise of Cub’s Den Manager, Jo Benecke, we depart with Greg to do some track moulding. After crossing the Sand River, they disembark the game drive vehicle to find animal footprints. Jo has the plaster of paris ready to mould what appears to be a lion paw print. Across the river, we see them lying in the shade of a tree – the very lions whose paws we are about to cast in stone. Greg suggests we take a closer look at the lions while waiting for the mould to set. The Tailless lioness and her niece are lying fast asleep in the soft sand while two cubs are more alert than the adults. At sixteen years of age, this is probably the last litter that the Tailless lioness will produce and boy, are they cute! As we head back to collect the mould, a herd of elephants is crossing the river and having loads of fun quenching their thirst. The day has heated up enough for us to try out the plunge pool on our deck. What a stunning place to have a swim with the Sand River as your vantage point. After lunch, the evening game drive always holds the promise of seeing nocturnal animals on the prowl. Greg and Equalizer are following the tracks of the Mashaba female leopard that has three very young cubs hidden in a den site. Fresh tracks are spotted over the vehicle’s tyre prints, concluding that she has to be in the area. The trackers are now on foot, searching in the dry riverbed, but she seems to be running away from them as she veers off in a different direction all the time. Disappointed, we leave her be as keeping her cubs safe is of paramount importance to their survival. We are rewarded with the spectacle of two giraffes fighting in the Sand River. Keeping a close eye on them is the aunt of the Tailless lioness while the lioness’ cubs are nursing. Greg announces that we must go because ‘we are already late’. Speeding through the reserve we eventually see the twinkling lights of the drinks stop, where Founders Camp Manager Christy Jordan and Operations Manager Will Ford, together with Greg and Jo await our arrival. This is a special occasion and while the hosts and guests get better acquainted, Jo and my daughter play copious rounds of a ballgame called Bull. Back at camp, our Boma dinner is a veritable feast. 52 Upscale Living Magazine |

A magnificent sunrise heralds the new day and by now I’m desperate to see another leopard. Londolozi is renowned for its leopard sightings and I will not be happy if they elude us today. Greg drives us in an Easterly route and Equalizer is concentrating very hard to see where the footprints are heading. Another vehicle has joined the search with Greg and Equalizer on foot to get a distinct idea of where these illusive creatures might be hiding. The radio message comes through loud and clear – ‘we found them’! I am so excited I can hardly contain myself. On top of a termite mound in the shade of a tree we see her – the Tamboti 4:3 female leopard glancing upwards looking at her Impala kill in a tree. She is not alone – she has two fluffy cubs who join her and we sit for a while watching them playing before she moves to the other side of the termite mound and starts grooming her one cub, much to his delight. She gets up to scale the tree and pauses before looking up with her cub joining her. We leave the incredible sighting to make way for another vehicle, exultant in the knowledge that Londolozi is in fact, leopard heaven. Sad to leave, we are driven by Equalizer to the Londolozi Airstrip with a packed breakfast of croissants, bacon, fruit juice, a muffin and a banana to board our Airlink Lodge Link flight to Skukuza Airport. The Cessna 208B Grand Caravan is our mode of transport and we are suitably impressed with the cleanliness of Skukuza Airport. Homeward bound, we are flown from Skukuza to Cape Town International by Airlink in the Embraer 145/140/135, undoubtedly the best way to travel. www.londolozi.com. SE77 ANTASETTE By Benetti and Romero | By Heléne Ramackers

Embodying the spirit of design, technology and handcraftmanship, the innovation of concept designed yacht SE77antasette is a work of art. At the helm of the design is international award-winning designer Fernando Romero, partnering with Benetti, the oldest Italian builder of motor yachts and an icon of timeless Italian styling and construction excellence.

P

remiering the Se77antasette concept yacht at the 2017 Monaco Yacht Show, the cutting-edge design is a revolutionary escape from the conventional conceptualization of yachts. No more rigid edges; instead flowing lines combined with complex structures create balanced connections between all decks, design features and at exactly 77 metres long, Se77antasette is inspired from the marine habitat.

56 Upscale Living Magazine |

It is visually appealing with a fusion between decks, creating a single body that appears carved into the structure of the boat, making it a dimensional masterpiece. The navigation systems and the propulsion system is technologically advanced with radar equipment completely invisible from view and navigation equipment hidden inside a glass dome. The groundbreaking design and layout allows for the engine room to be on only one level, making it possible for the lower deck to be dedicated completely to accommodation. This is luxury on another level. An extremely satisfied Vincenzo Poerio, Benetti CEO, in his comments on this latest challenge, stressed “the decidedly innovative essence of this project, born from a perfect union between the two different worlds of yachting and civil architecture; the major difficulty was to make an already excellent product even better. If the shipyard’s identity is recognised universally as a sophisticated luxury product, then the Se77antasette elevates yachting to a higher dimension than we have ever seen before, drawing on Romero’s skill and Benetti’s know-how”. www.benettiyachts.it

aris-born Benjamin was 14 years old when he volunteered as an apprentice at a local restaurant. He continued and studied French cuisine where he earned two culinary degrees. Later on he worked at Le Celadon and after military service he worked at several wellknown French restaurants. Steve Benjamin became the Sous Chef at the Astor Hotel in Paris where he was trained by Joël Robuchon who soon noticed the talented chef. In 2003 Robuchon recruited Chef Benjamin to open L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon in Paris and in 2005 he was given the opportunity to open up the L’Atelier in Las Vegas as the Executive Chef. Chef Benjamin joined the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills as Executive Chef of Jean-Georges Beverly Hills in June 2017.

Was there a moment early on or an experience that sparked you to pursue a culinary career? It is in my blood. Where I’m from, my family and I love to be around and entertain people, the conviviality of it all, and to make something special for them that they will enjoy. Now, I do it every day, constantly challenging myself to do better. How you would describe your philosophy or approach to cuisine? My philosophy is simple. The best food requires the best produce and the best ingredients. Where do you draw your inspiration from? I come up with my best ideas when I’m asleep. My dreams are a powerful source of inspiration for me. Walk me through the process of how a new dish is created, from your mind to the plate. It usually starts with a vision of the dish on a plate. Next is what we can assemble together based on that vision and understanding the combination of flavors we would like to instill. Then, we focus on texture and uniqueness. What are some of your favorite dishes and drinks to serve at the new Jean-Georges Beverly Hills? I really love all the JG pizza and caviar creations, as well as the crispy sushi. The best drink, and I’m not a drinker, is the infused lavender Mezcale Paloma. Is there such a thing as the perfect dish? There are no perfect dishes in my eyes. There is always room for improvement or modifications to elevate the dish. It is a never-ending pursuit.

“The palaces have been restored in a contemporary style but all original details have been maintained like the grand staircase designed by the architect of King Louis XIV, Daniel Marot,” explained Roberto Payer, General Manager of the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam. In an interview, we discussed the history of the hotel, the understated luxury of the interior design, the two-star Michelin restaurant on-site and much more. Tell me a little bit about the history and location of the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam. The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam comprehends 6 merchant palaces of the 17th and 18th century in the Golden Bend and is the first canal ever built; ‘the Herengracht’ or ‘Gentlemen’s Canal’. The palaces have been inhabited by key families of the country and all the history can be found in the literature of the Gentlemen’s Canal. The area is included in the UNESCO heritage. The palaces have been restored in a contemporary style but all original details have been maintained like the hall and the grand staircase designed by the architect of King Louis XIV, Daniel Marot, or the dining room of the Hooft family painted by Jacob Maurer.

How would you describe the design and décor of the property at large and in particular, the signature suites such as the Van Loon Suite? Understated luxury is the term that can be used to define the interior decoration of the hotel signed by GA London. All original details have been maintained and became part of the interior. Rooms face the Gentlemen’s Canal or the private largest garden of Amsterdam. Four signature suites and three loft rooms are second to none having used the original structure and décor to emphasize the past while the rest of the interior shows a contemporary style. One of the most original suites is the Van Loon suite, with details from the 17th and the 18th century in them and a painting of the ancestor ‘Willem van Loon’ fellow founder of the VOC (United East India Company). The lofts are unique as they feature beams dating back to the 17th century. In terms of dining, how would you describe the atmosphere and menu of Librije’s Zusje Amsterdam and Goldfinch Brasserie? Librije’s Zusje received its 2 Michelin stars after 7 months of the opening. Located in the lower part of the hotel facing the garden and contemporary decorated, it has a very personalized menu, signed by Sidney Schutte. The menu cannot be described as all the recipes contain the various experiences of Sidney around the world and most of the products are local. A unique experience for a food lover.

Award winning and classical cocktails are served. The menu includes a wallet where the design of foreign currencies shows a specific cocktail of the country they represent. TAITTINGER CHAMPAGNE UPSCALE LIVING GOES BUBBLY | By Karen Berliner Champagne. (/shamˈpān/) --A sparkling wine associated with joy and regarded as a symbol of luxury, typically that made in the Champagne region of Reims, France. Champagne. Let the word roll off of your tongue--maybe practice and perfect your French accent while you’re at it. Allow it to incite your own personal reaction and pique all of your five senses in a rare and perfect symphony--- even how one pronounces the word champagne, or the wine region and the vineyards from which it originates Reims (pronounced by the natives like some nasalization of Ranse which rhymes oh so exquisitely with France) matters. It all matters, so take it in. Whether you are walking the ancient and naturally chilled salt caves where champagne is stored till maturity or exploring the champagne grape vineyards themselves, heady with the fragrance of its sweet fruit, champagne is an experience for all of the senses – color, aroma, texture and flavor. Oh, and the sound of a cork popping—

---Pure celebration. In the name of tried and true, there are some brands of Champagne that rise above the rest to the extraordinary. For us at Gladys, Champagne Taittinger sweeps in and simply steals the show. About Champagne Taittinger: In the city of Reims, France, Champagne Taittinger is the largest family owned Champagne house and continues the tradition of creating its fine wines just as it has since 1932 when Pierre Taittinger founded the brand. In 2005, the house was brought by Starwood Capital, an American investment company. After a few years Taittinger was sold to Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger, grandson of the original founder. (A small portion owned by bank Crédit Agricole). Vitalie Taittinger joined Champagne Taittinger when her father bought back the company and is now its Artistic Director. A source of creative flair for advertising campaigns and a Taittinger ambassadress, she is a fine representative of the values of elegance and generosity that is what this company is all about, at the heart of it all. Lovely and vibrant, Vitalie was recently

appointed as Champagne Taittinger’s Global Ambassador and can be seen in advertisements all around the world. Champagne Taittinger is one of the last remaining major marquee Champagne houses that is actively owned and managed by the Taittinger family. Their Champagnes are dominated by Chardonnay giving them a signature elegance and delicacy. Currently, Champagne Taittinger is distributed globally in 140 countries. About an hour’s drive from Paris through France’s scenic countryside, the grand Château de la Marquetterie is where it all began for Champagne Taittinger over 80 years ago. At the two houses in Reims, the complex and vast history of the Gallo-Roman is recollected via chalk pits that were constructed in the fourth century and used as a place of refuge by thousands of people during World War I. The maze of passages at Pommery also housed a hospital, a school and a post office. The Chalk Mine headquarters are located on Reim’s Butte Saint-Nicaise, a site with more than eighteen centuries of history. Descend the stairs to the underground and experience the old world

created in Gallo-Roman times in the 13th century. The site was abandoned for 150 years and resurrected in the 1920s with the arrival of a Champagne House. After the war, Taittinger bought the site and moved its headquarters there. The building’s original art-deco style has been meticulously preserved and it shows. Stroll the cavernous space, its nooks and crannies and allow your senses to dictate the experience. Today, Taittinger‘s Champagne house produces approximately 400,000 cases a year of Champagne cuvee, Brut Reserve, vintage wines and sublime Blancs de Blancs prestige cuvee Comtes de Champagne, matched by an equally exquisite and rare rose type. Taittinger makes a Brut Réserve every year which is recognized all over the world. Produced with a unique proportion of first press wines, this cuvée is a blend that has a particularly high percentage of Chardonnay (40%) combined with Pinot Noir (35%) and Pinot Meunier (25%), which come from more than 35 different crus and harvest upon harvest. After aging three to four years in their cellars (over twice the legal requirement0, it reaches a maturity packed with flavor. The color is a bright golden straw yellow. The nose is very expressive, with aromas of fruit and a robust brioche note. There are also hints of peach, white flowers and vanilla. On the palate, the “attack” is fresh and lively, expressing delicate flavors of fruit and honey. The finish offers a slight hint of grapefruit.

http://www.cellartours.com/france/ french-wineries/taittinger About Reims, France: Reims, an Art and History city is ideal for more than just sipping and tasting. Stroll through its streets and discover many sites, monuments and museums which proudly showcase the history of Reims, from the Gallo-Roman to the modern era, going through the Art Deco period. For those with a passion for botany, Reims lies in the first floral department of France with 103 communes ranked 1 to 4 flowers, among them Reims with the 4 flowers rank. The “Coulée Verte”, a wide band of greenery that crosses the city from northwest to south-east, follows the River Vesle and the Aisne-Marne Canal. Jog along the canal and take in the fragrance and the visions before you. The Parc naturel régional de la Montagne de Reims is a hikers dream, located in the outskirts of the city. While champagne is Reims’ most famous product, Reims holds numerous culinary treasures to satisfy the most discriminating taste buds.

UPSCALE LIVING OFFERS A CRASH COURSE IN CHAMPAGNE 1. To appreciate the full aromatics of Champagne, you must allow the wine to open, at the same time studying its appearance in the glass. Once open, the Champagne releases its ‘first nose’ or olfactory impressions, followed later by a deeper, more complex ‘second nose’. The aromas in Champagne are also an indication of grape variety and ripeness. Champagne challenges the sense of taste, particularly the tongue and the palate. The moment when the wine enters the mouth is the high point of the tasting. Our sense of touch is also the source of thel ‘mouthfeel’ or the texture of the wine on the palate. 2. The glass, ideally a fine crystal tulip-shaped glass, should feel cool to the touch. Champagne is at its best when you have stood the bottle in an ice bucket for half an hour and served it at a temperature of 8-10°C (46.4-50°F). 3. Our brain has to distinguish between suggestions of white, yellow and pink, fruity, spicy and floral aromas, subtle, delicate and powerful aromas –and of course its magical bubbles. The sound made by Champagne as it leaves a correctly opened bottle is one of your first clues to the wine’s identity. The cork should be eased out firmly but at the time gently, releasing with a soft hiss. There is a subtle popping sound as the bottle is opened, then a crackly, fizzing sound as the wine is poured. The bubbles whisper and then quiet, allowing you the non distracted first taste. 4. Enjoy to your heart’s desire! WILD TURKEY BOURBON DONE RIGHT | By Jennica B.

Wild Turkey is an award-winning brand of Kentucky Bourbon - High in Rye and Aged to Perfection.

T

he bottles make interesting centerpieces, and allow for great presentation and conversation. For those who are serious about Bourbon, this distillery will create for you your very own, personalized barrel for purchase. Designed with your unique, specific, Upscale tastes in mind, you can choose from two, different varieties of Bourbon, and if you are a collector, then you’ve come to the right place! Each barrel yields 174 bottles of Bourbon, and they are precisely blended and packaged in cases of six. Equation Persuasion: We’ll help you in case you’ve already delved into pre-selection sampling - You get 29 cases of six bottles each. Buyer Insider: Eddie Russell represents this label with 35 years in the distilling industry. The distillery was handed down through generations and originally owned by his Father, Jimmy. Jimmy, himself, lends a wealth of experience to his son, with over 60 years in the industry - A

little secret: Jimmy is also a title holder, as an award-winning distiller in the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame. We appreciate people like these who appreciate quality, and also those who are humble, in turn – Just “Plain old Jimmy from Kentucky” and his son, Eddie Russell – These guys know Bourbon! Here are your choices, if you are looking at buying into the barrel-ship program: Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel Bourbon | Deeply complex, with flavors of caramel, licorice, and vanilla, there is a slight difference in characteristics from one barrel to another. The barrels used for Russell’s Reserve are branded the best. Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit | This Single Barrel Bourbon is full-bodied with rich vanilla flavors and a spark of sweetness. It’s complex with hints of almond, honey, blackberry, and leather. For those of you who are questioning the “leather” taste, we like to describe this as a Smokey, Cocoa or Mocha flavor, the kick of spice that you can’t quite put your finger on - The good news being that Bourbon is another spirit that is 100% Vegetarian, so you are doing your part in conservative consumption - The finish is long and dark with a velvety taste following every sip. We had a great time interviewing Eddie Russell, and he shared with us the secret to his success.

Describe your Bourbon using five words. Real Bourbon. No apologies. Ok, that’s four words - We’re not sorry either. What do you mean by that? Meaning we continue to make whiskey the same way my father, Master Distiller Jimmy Russell, has done for more than 60 years. This includes sing the same yeast strain for decades, only non-GMO grains, charring our barrels to a number four “alligator char,” aging longer than most, and using a high rye count in our mashbill. Ok, I apologize. What inspires you most about your Distillery? The time-honored techniques and fam ily tradition we’re continuing at Wild Turkey. My father has been working at Wild Turkey for more than 60 years and gave me a deep ap preciation for making great Bourbon, which I’m honored to continue. There’s the right way, the wrong way, and the way Jimmy does it. It’s inspiring to grow up with a man who is unwav ering in his principles. The same extends to our Wild Turkey distillery team, which is like an extended family. Many of

the people who work at Wild Turkey Hill come from a long line of Bourbon makers and distillery workers. My son Bruce joined the family business a few years ago as a Russell’s Reserve brand ambassador and it gives me a lot of pride to see the younger generation take to Bourbon the way Jimmy and I did. Oh Hey-Zus – We forgot Bruce! Lordy Old Sweet and Dying Jesus...Who are the most likely barrel-buyers?

the fundamental difference between the two, or what might be the deciding factor for each? When it comes to Wild Turkey and Russell’s Reserve, I don’t play favorites, but I’ve been known to enjoy a glass of Russell’s Reserve - 10 Year Old – on occasion. I also appreciate our Master’s Keep Series for Wild Turkey, as I’ve been able to [experiment with] some of the older aged Bourbons.

We’re looking to reach anyone interested in great Bourbon. Right now, bartenders are a big reason Bourbon is a big seller, both in the US, and overseas. While the US has always been an important market for us, I’m spending a lot more time on the road these days, in places like the UK, Brazil, Australia, and Japan – [Wild Turkey’s Worldwide].

Created in 1998, Russell’s Reserve is Wild Tur key’s Kentucky-made line of small batch Bour bon and Rye whiskeys. For Russell’s Reserve, we use only the best, aged-whiskey bespoke barrels, from the center cut of the rick house the best aged barrels. Who is your biggest source of inspiration when it comes to your work?

Sounds like you’ve been everywhere but Turkey. When is the best time to purchase a private barrel? Do you offer tours of the Distillery to the general public? When is the best time to visit?

My father, and his unwavering passion for making Bourbon the right way. Bourbon went through a rough patch from the 1970s through the 1990s, when gin and vodka were the popular, spirits of choice. It was during these times when my father remained steadfast and work hard, spending hours venturing town-to-town, [tetea-tete], [forming lasting relationships in the community – the key to good business], [building a solid reputation on] his Bourbon, [based on good character and passion]. Jimmy has the same time for his fans – and you will often find him hanging out in the Wild Turkey Visitor’s Center, with his sharpies, signing bottles [for those who appreciate good Bourbon]. Wild Turkey ownership changed four times during that duration; [however,] Jimmy’s [enthusiasm] for making Bourbon, using time-honored traditions was unwavering.

Times for barrel selection vary, and we suggest people start by calling the distillery for avail ability. Each year we allocate a certain amount of Kentucky Spirit and Russell’s Reserve Barrels as part of our private barrel program, and our customers line up barrel picks months in ad vance. They love coming to the distillery and hanging out in the warehouses sampling Bour bon, straight from the barrel. Which do you prefer, Russell’s Reserve or Wild Turkey Kentucky Bourbon? What is 72 Upscale Living Magazine |

OCTOBER 2017 www.upscalelivingmag.com

Why do you think it is important to recognize good Bourbon? Bourbon is booming today, thanks to distillers like Jimmy [Russell]. If they didn’t commit to making Bourbon the right way, years ago, we wouldn’t have the quality of Bourbon we’re accustomed to today. I think it’s important to recognize the [dedication] that goes into something that takes four or more years to make. I also can’t impart on folks enough the importance of the bartending community in making Bourbon and Rye “COOL” again. You can walk into almost any bar these days and find a great Manhattan or Old Fashioned on the menu. The Bourbon community owes a [gracious outpouring] to the bartenders who brought Bourbon back into fashion…and made me a busy man. Lucky too – It’s nice to be one of those innova tive, creative people, who gets to do what you love, and love what you do - Wild Kentucky Bourbon – It’s all you! I’m sorry, we didn’t interview you sooner, about your unapologeti cally real, genuine, Upscale brand of Bourbon. What a great way to celebrate with friends, and share good times - A bottle to take home for guests.
