The Baroness of Mayfair
LADY MICHELLE MONE Takes the Interior World By Storm! | By Angela Sara West
M
ulti-talented and multi-awardwinning Michelle Mone is one of the UK’s most successful self-made women. She’s not only the ultra-glamorous Baroness of Mayfair, but also founded the country’s leading designer lingerie line, Ultimo Brands International, promoted by highprofile names including Helena Christensen, Penny Lancaster and Mel B.

he’s also a global ambassador for Bentley and British Airways, a reality TV star and has a highlysuccessful jewellery collection for QVC. Now, she’s set to conquer the world of interiors with her immaculate interior designs.
She talks to Angela Sara West about her expanding business empire, her global property portfolio, her top tips for entrepreneurs and her beauty advice for women over 40. Baroness Mone of Mayfair is among the UK’s most successful entrepreneurs. Despite growing up in an impoverished part of Glasgow, Scotland, and leaving school at 15 with no qualifications after her father became ill, she lives a life of luxury and enjoys an expansive, and everexpanding, multi-million-pound business empire spanning multiple industries. Her rise to fame and fortune began with the ultra-successful lingerie brand she launched in London’s Selfridges in 1999. She went on to create the award-winning fake tanning range, UTan, and a best-selling jewellery range for QVC. She now has a new string to her business bow… Launched last month, her latest venture, the eponymous Michelle Mone Interiors, is a truly international one, offering high-end, bespoke interior design services around the world. “From the intricate creation of ‘the perfect bra’ with Ultimo and my jewellery range, to personally renovating the interiors of my own homes to an exceptionally high standard, design and interiors has always been my passion,” she tells me. “Although I am labelled an entrepreneur, global speaker, author, innovator and parliamentarian, being a designer has long been a big part of my life and, therefore, my success,” she explains. A BUSINESS BARONESS Michelle’s entrepreneurial spirit kicked in at a very early age. “I’ve always had the drive, from just 10 years old. Failure drives me and I always keep going as I never will go there!” What’s her ethos and what’s at the heart of all her businesses? “Hard work, innovative design, originality and personality. Those attributes run through all of my businesses.” She says it’s a combination of those qualities that set her brands apart from similar offerings. “Everything I do has my own personal and professional stamp on it… no-one can rival that as no-one else is me! We are constantly pushing to be bigger and better than our competitors. Business is a really exciting thing and my passion to launch new ventures motivates me. Personally, my parents inspire me while professionally, my business icon is my partner, Doug Barrowman.” But business hasn’t always been booming for the Baroness. “In the beginning, finance was my biggest challenge… having a great idea and vision but not having the finance to take it to the next level is often the case with businesses. A distributor ran off with £1.4m of my money! However, that was also my biggest lesson. I learnt a lesson from that experience. In business, you learn a lot from the low moments.” A GOVT BIZ CZAR! ACCOLADES FROM THE QUEEN & PARLIAMENT Perseverance paid off and Michelle carved out a glittering career. In 2010, the now high-flying businesswoman was voted one of the UK’s top three female entrepreneurs and the Queen awarded her an OBE for her outstanding contribution to business. “I felt very honoured, and to be recognised on this level, considering my humble Glaswegian 14 Upscale Living Magazine |
background, is such a special achievement, meaning a lot to me and my family. It was an incredible moment for us. For me, though, this is for all of the young children and young adults who don’t have hope. Dream, work hard, never give up and you will get there in the end.” In 2015, the inspirational born achiever was awarded a Life Peerage to the House of Lords. “Receiving my OBE was one of my proudest moments and becoming Lady Michelle Mone of Mayfair and a member of the House of Lords in 2015 were also huge honours for me.” The lingerie tycoon-turned-Parliamentarian subsequently set up The Mone Review, focusing on helping start-up businesses. Her top tips for setting up a business? “To succeed in business, you need determination like no other. It may sound cliché, but never give up. Always deliver for your customers and team, no matter what. Be unique and passionate and never stop! Business isn’t easy, and success is ever harder. It can be a long journey, so you need to be hard-working, different and determined – that really is the secret.” SELL-OUT SUCCESS FOR DIAMONIQUE The super-smart businesswoman’s phenomenally-successful jewellery collection, Michelle Mone for Diamonique, has proved so popular that one of her necklace ranges sold out on the QVC retail channel in just 92 seconds! “My range for Diamonique is incredible and I am so thrilled with its sell-out success on QVC. I was so proud. I never lose the feeling of feeling incredibly happy when a project I’ve been working on for a long time does really well.” Comprising timeless pieces, perfect for both formal and casual occasions, her collection offers an affordable range of stylish jewellery. “I have always loved jewellery, so this was a natural collaboration for me with my interest in the subject, my business mind and my design-led attitude. I have always been a glamourous businesswoman, and jewellery has been a big part of my look and outfits over the last 20 years of business.” How did the collaboration with QVC come about? “It really is the perfect brand match for both of us, plus I have years of experience when it comes to presenting a product and dealing with media, so it’s the dream link-up. There are always challenges in a design-led fashion business but, overall, it’s such a wonderful collaboration.” The chic jewellery designer has just launched a new collection, featuring perfect pink diamonds. “It’s going very well. We’re consistently extending the range, launching new designs and acquiring new customers. It’s an amazing feeling.” Michelle’s personal style is all about customised glamour. “I would say I’m glamourous, but always with a sophisticated, tailored edge. There’s always a line I don’t cross when it comes to glamour. My jewellery pieces are very glamourous and really are statement pieces, so they can totally enhance an outfit and really make it something special. I often wear block colours and add the jewellery in for the sparkle.” What kind of woman wears her collection? “I have lots of different customers. The QVC customers are women who always look gorgeous and really care about their appearance, whether they are wearing a piece every day or buying a matching set for that special event or occasion.” What’s hot this summer in the jewellery world and what should we be looking at investing in to ensure we’re on-trend this autumn? “The designs and trends are constantly moving and evolving, but one of my personal favourites is my Michelle Mone for Diamonique 3.5ct tw Halo Ring Sterling Silver – it’s timeless!” GRAND INTERNATIONAL DESIGNS As one of Britain’s wealthiest men, Michelle’s partner, business tycoon Doug Barrowman’s company, Knox Private Office, offers a tailored advisory service to ultra-high-net-worth individuals and entrepreneurs

Michelle and Doug recently set up Michelle Mone Interiors (MMI Global Limited) as part of Doug’s Knox Group. Multimillionaire Michelle’s new move into the interiors sector already sees success on the horizon. “My latest venture for 2017, and a huge passion of mine, is Michelle Mone Interiors, for which I collaborate with the fantastic leading designer, Julie Chapman. This partnership allows me to combine my business attributes and unique design flair with Julie’s unrivalled experience and expertise as Head Designer for my company.” With offices in London’s Chelsea, Monaco, Dubai and the Isle of Man, Michelle’s new global business delivers a high-end, very personal and bespoke interiors service that balances luxurious elegance with intelligent design and creative infusion, promising to turn clients’ homes and businesses into places of inspiration. The company’s signature is British-inspired elegance with a contemporary design twist and functionality, created from the highestquality materials and outstanding craftsmanship, resulting in beautifullycrafted bespoke interiors of distinction and creating exceptional homes for discerning private residential clients, property developers, hoteliers and superyacht owners worldwide. From acquisition and strip out, to creating mood boards and plumping the final cushion, Michelle’s talented team delivers a complete turn-key solution, focusing on full concept interior and architectural design through to dressing every part of the home. Despite its very recent launch, the company already boasts a celebrity clientele. “We are very lucky to work with some incredible names and people within Michelle Mone Interiors. Julie has also designed homes and property for some big names across the world over the years. Our collaboration has allowed us to put our contact books together!” “I am as passionate about my new businesses, my jewellery range and Michelle Mone Interiors, as I was years ago launching Ultimo. It’s a journey… and a really exciting one!” A JET-SET BARONESS! “Permanently” on the road for work, Michelle has just finished a worldwide speaking tour, while her new interiors business takes her all around the globe. “A few weeks ago, I was in Dubai and then flew to the South of France before heading to London. Now, I’m on the Isle of Man, where my home is with Doug. In the near future, I’m due to visit South Africa, the US, St. Barths and Thailand. I’m very lucky!” Michelle never hops on a ‘plane without her ‘phone, laptop and a couple of other “essentials”. “Cider vinegar and a copy of my autobiography My Fight to The Top, in case I meet someone who needs to be inspired, in which case I’ll give them a copy!” Any travel bugbears? “DELAYS! It’s hard to manage delays when I have such a busy schedule!” The global entrepreneur extolls the virtues of Emirates. “They are just the best at everything.” Her favourite hotels and stretches of sand? “The Palace at One&Only Royal Mirage in Dubai is outstanding. All of my favourite beaches are in St. Barths.” Michelle’s most memorable business travel experience was her trip to China, where she enjoyed exploring the local cuisine and learning about the captivating Chinese culture. She has even enjoyed a quintessentially English ritual with royalty. “I once had afternoon tea with the incredible royal family of Abu Dhabi. But I’d left my make-up bag behind, so I ran into a local pharmacy and bought Vaseline… a last-minute panic purchase before I met the royals!”
I’m working because I love it so much! I enjoy experiencing different places… when you do that, every day is a school day!” With a new global business resulting in relentless travelling, does she worry about her carbon footprint? “Of course I do, but the world has to work. I support anything that can make the environment better.” As an active member of Parliament, Baroness Mone believes Brexit will inevitably impact on travel, but she offers some long-term reassurance for travellers. “Brexit’s like a difficult divorce. Of course, it will impact on everything, travel included, but after a while it will settle down.” A PROLIFIC PORTFOLIO OF PROPERTY, YACHTS & A PRIVATE JET… Although Michelle travels the world, she says there’s no place like her first home. “Scotland is my favourite destination. It’s beautiful, it’s where I’m from and I started my first business there. The Isle of Man is home now, though, and I feel I can relax there.” She and her Scottish boyfriend, venture capitalist Doug, divide their time between six luxury homes; a sprawling £120m château-style estate on the Isle of Man, a Belgravia penthouse apartment and a sevenbedroom villa in the South of France. They also own palatial homes in Thailand, St. Barths in the Caribbean and in Scotland, near Gleneagles. Doug owns a luxury car collection, including a fleet of five Ferraris, two super yachts and a private jet. He is an avid art collector and the sitting room of the couple’s main residence, the Isle of Man mansion, boasts a grand piano plus priceless pieces by Picasso, Dalí and Chagall, among other 19th- and 20th-century masters. The artworks are said to be worth more than £50million. Michelle enjoys the process of renovating her own homes. She says she embraces a range of styles and isn’t afraid of a pop of colour, but always opts for British craftsmanship, timelessness and sophistication “with a sexy twist and a touch of real glamour”. With their exceptional eye for design and attention to detail, Michelle and Julie have put their interior design stamp on the stunning Isle of Man mansion, which comes complete with a fully-equipped spa, swimming pool and high-tech gym, along with a helipad, amphitheatre and staff quarters. In London, Michelle resided in a £2million Mayfair penthouse apartment with its own cinema and nightclub on one of London’s most exclusive streets, before moving into the London riverside penthouse, with an unbeatable, front-row Tower Bridge view which, she says, “Looks like something out of a movie.” The loved-up couple, who have seven children between them, met at a business dinner last year, sparking a whirlwind romance. The besotted billionaire was soon wining and dining Michelle on a three-day-long date in the South of a France, on board his spectacular £50m 183ft super yacht, Turquoise. Boasting ‘7-star’ service, a 13-strong crew, an outdoor cinema, a grand piano and handmade silk carpets, the luxury love boat featured in the Channel 4 TV documentary Million Pound Mega Yachts and in an explosive opening scene in Sky Atlantic’s new crime drama Riviera, starring Julia Stiles. Doug himself landed a role as a Russian arms dealer, in return for loaning Turquoise and “digitally” blowing it up! When it’s time for some well-deserved R&R, Michelle swaps the benches of the House of Lords, the sofas of QVC and her business-speaking duties at home and abroad to head to her holiday homes to enjoy the high life in the sun. “We’re very lucky to have a home in the South of France and a new one in St Barths, which is no.1… we just love spending time there.” Surrounded by palm trees and overlooking the spectacular bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer and St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, the baroness and her beau’s Villefranche vacation home is on the market with upscale agents Knight Frank for €15m (US$17.12 million at the time it was first

marketed). The seven-bedroom French Riviera villa, La Cascade, boasts a stunning infinity pool with a Jacuzzi and 180-degree views from the terraces. The plush pad enjoys an elevated, private position affording an awe-inspiring panorama of the sparkling Mediterranean and the lavish lifestyle of the glitzy Côte d’Azur. A HEALTHY PASSION
Does age matter to 45-year-old Michelle? “With age comes experience, which is always so useful in business. But there are some incredible young business minds out there, too, which is really exciting. I have found happiness with my partner, Doug, so for me, my 40’s and after means happiness with him in our homes and time spent with our families.” SAILING OFF INTO THE SUNSET… SUPER YACHT STYLE!
With beautiful blonde locks cascading over her shoulders and flawlesslyapplied makeup, the first lady of lingerie never fails to look amazing. She says she found herself in a much more positive place when she developed a recent new passion for health and fitness. Her advice for women over 40? “My one main tip is exercise for one hour a day, wherever you are, whatever your mood. A healthy body = a healthy mind. Exercise and health has changed my life. Ambition, happiness and confidence all create instant glamour for me.”
Michelle says she has “no regrets” in life and has now met her match in Doug who, she says, makes her feel like she is “in a fairytale… a beautiful dream”. She once said she plans to retire at 48 and her dream is to build a sailing boat with Doug, to their own design, and sail around the world... Is this still the plan? “Let’s see! As long as I’m happy, travelling the world and my businesses are successful, that’s what matters.”
The elegant entrepreneur is inspired by the “juice master”, Jason Vale, and advocates a healthy diet, including ginger and malt vinegar shots, while her top beauty must-haves include her UTan tanning range. “It always gives you that healthy glow whenever, wherever you are.”
Michelle’s motto is “Work hard, play hard”. How does she manage to maintain a successful work-life balance? “When you love what you do, you’re living the dream and it doesn’t feel like hard work. That’s the secret to balance!”

Maker's Mark® showcases exclusive Art Exhibition by Renowned artist Dale Chihuly | By Heléne Ramackers
T
wo iconic Americans join forces once again to craft an experience that catches the imagination while dazzling the senses. Proudly celebrating the work of world-famous artist Dale Chihuly, Maker’s Mark®, the pioneer of premium bourbon, Chihuly at Maker’s will be unveiled from 1 July through 31 October 2017.
Temporarily exhibited at Burke House Welcome Center, the exhibit is inspired by the distillery’s command of light and lush surrounding camp grounds. The site-specific exhibition is the second installation commissioned for Maker’s Mark by Chihuly. The Spirit of the Maker, his first notable permanent installation, was a celebratory tribute to Maker’s tradition of bourbon making in Kentucky with the unveiling taking place in 2014. “I had the privilege to visit the landmark Maker’s Mark Distillery in 2014 when we worked together to install The Spirit of the Maker,” said artist Dale Chihuly. “I was inspired then by its unique landscape and architecture and am excited to share my work from the perspective of its special surroundings.” Chihuly at Maker’s encompasses six large-scale art installations sited throughout the distillery grounds. The Maker’s Mark Distillery will be altered by Chihuly’s dramatic works of art decisively set throughout the historic landmark campus to complement the distillery’s landscape and architecture. The exhibition includes Summer Sun, a 12foot tall blown glass and steel sculpture; a collection of five fiery-red Baskets; and an 18-foot wide Crimson and Chestnut Fiori Boat, which combines a range of forms massed together in a traditional wooden boat. The Sapphire and Platinum Waterdrop Tower, which stands at approximately 12-feet, is a classic demonstra-
tion of Chihuly’s desire to mass color on a steel framework for dramatic effect. For hundreds of years, blown glass pieces were small, intricately designed and admired from atop a table. The stark contrast is evident in Chihuly’s Towers that seem to rise from the ground like huge stalagmites and have been an iconic aesthetic of installations in art museums and botanical gardens worldwide. Like all Chihuly sculptures, the Sapphire and Platinum Waterdrop Tower was designed explicitly for its location, in this case, in front of the distillery’s cellar and natural water source. “Just as my grandparents, the founders of Maker’s Mark, first envisioned, we’re committed to enhancing our visitor experience with culturally immersive opportunities unlike any other distillery in the world,” said Rob Samuels, the eighth-generation whisky maker and Chief Operating Officer of Maker’s Mark. “Creating our handmade bourbon isn’t a job – it’s an art form. It’s an honor to have formed such a lasting relationship with world-renowned artist Dale Chihuly.” Chihuly at Maker’s is one of several site-specific installations from Chihuly that have been featured at high-profile locations around the country, including recent exhibits at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the New York Botanical Garden and the Catalina Island Museum in Avalon, California. archesa is the haute couture collection, created by Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig. Both of these women are wellknown designers with educational degrees in art (i.e. costume design, print, etc). Known for their flashy fabrics, elegant embroidery, and delicate details, these fearless, fashion designers feature a variety of beautiful ball gowns and cocktail dresses, well suited to the equally confident, self-actualized, style-wise women who wear them. Marchesa designs are often seen on the Red Carpet, dressing up female actresses and musicians, as they receive awards for their many accomplishments. These first-place picks have been gracing runways, public and private events since 2004, and we are patiently awaiting fashion week, ready for more.
ROMANTIC RUFFLES | Ruffles add dimension and texture to gowns, creating an alluring look and feel - dressed to express. We love the mood of romance, that sets the tone for evenings spent adorned in ruffles, wrapped in lightly colored fabrics and intensifying drama, like the faint to dark shades in these cascading, layered looks to love. Carefully choose color to add a sense of emotion that communicates your most sincere sentiments. While ruffles accessorize the ensemble, when choosing flirtatious looks like these, companionship can become the finishing touch. SATIN SILHOUETTES | Satin woven dresses are flexible and flowing with tremendous, figure-flattering drapability. Dresses in this textile represent luxury, high-end fashion design, and are reserved for the most special moments. Bold col26 Upscale Living Magazine |

ors and darling details, set the mood for finesse and formality. Think deep, rich hues of teal, purple or black, or add in sultry detail with charming accessories. More subtle, diamond-accents, make a guest appearance, to liven things up. Arrive high class and high fashion, with selections in satin. FLAWLESS FLORALS | Floral patterned prints present a more traditional look and feel to dresses, giving them an overall illusion of innocence and simplicity. Become a natural beauty, with floor skimming gowns reflecting colors characteristic of the blossoming seasons, in shades of summer and fall. Styles inspired by cosmic creation can be worn for any occasion, and come complete by Marchesa with dazzling delights to accessorize with – dashing, floral accents embellish the natural look with floral decorations for faces, necklines and feet.

riving through the 36,324 acre reserve en route to Ngala, you are already amongst the animals and should you encounter one, keep your windows and doors closed and don’t attempt to approach them. Should an animal cross your path, they have right of way, so stop and enjoy their beauty.
We are fervently welcomed at andBeyond Ngala Safari Lodge by Christina Messham, Kim Waterworth and Beatrice Coetser. Not far behind them is our butler, Emmanuel Makhabula and our ranger Bernard Stiglingh. After a refreshing drink, Emmanuel leads the way to Room 3 and 4, where we will be spending two nights and three days. He unlocks Room 3 and disappears into Room 4 with a ‘let me do some magic’. He unlatches the inter-leading door to reveal two adjoining rooms, carbon copies of one another. Our daughter is so enthralled that she has her own room that no-one is allowed to visit without her permission. It is time for lunch and a tasty variety of salads, main course and dessert is on offer. We meet Bernard at reception for our first game drive. Following andBeyond Ngala on Instagram and taking heed of the wonderful sightings leading up to our visit, I am eager to see what we can find. Bernard does not disappoint. From vultures waiting to feed on a carcass to the cutest lion cubs – the one plays with his mother’s tail while the other one gets groomed. The highlight for everyone on the vehicle is an African Wild Dog sighting. And this is only Day 1! Dinner is in the Boma with Bernard as our host. We dine on a selection of salads, vegetables and meat that is grilled on a braai (barbeque). I rush through supper as I cannot wait to get back to the comforts of our opulent suite. Night has fallen and we are escorted to our room by a security guard, one of the unique features at Ngala, going the extra mile for the safety of their guests as the camp is not fenced. Vigilance at all times is a pre-requisite and many animals can be spotted during the day enjoying the offerings of the camp – you might see tree squirrels, warthogs and bushbuck grazing and elephants coming to drink from the pool. Stay a safe distance from them and rather leave the pool area when the elephants come to quench their thirst. Colonial chic is apparent in the choice of furnishings while the tiled shower, freestanding bath and double vanities take you back to an era of grandiose style. With floor-to-ceiling glass windows, you can wash the day away in the comfort of your bathroom or serenade the surrounding wildlife from your outside shower, which is exactly what I did. Clean from head to toe, the soft white linen is incredibly enticing. The bed is so enormous that I joke the next morning ‘I had to send out a search party to find my husband’.

T R A V E L Our morning game drive departs at 06:30 and it is overcast. A lone giraffe is feeding on some greenery and a number of hyenas have taken over the runway – the tar surface must be warmer than the wet grass. A coalition of three cheetahs is on the prowl and two of them take refuge on a termite mound. They suddenly realise they have ‘lost’ a member of the trio and after lots of anxious high-pitched chirping, they are eventually reunited with lots of sniffing and a few ‘welcome back’ licks. andBeyond Ngala Safari Lodge has a slightly different but very effective ranger / tracker system – a ranger and tracker team go in search of animals before the rangers depart, calling in the sightings thus saving time. When we all agree that we would like to see a leopard, we are astounded when Bernard approaches a tree where a leopard is feeding on an impala kill. Watching him disembowelling the dead animal is the fluffiest hyena I have ever seen. Back at the lodge, breakfast is served, where you can choose between fruits, cereal, continental or warm breakfast. The temperature is pleasant enough to warrant a swim in the sparkling blue swimming pool. After a hearty lunch, our afternoon game drive heads in an opposite direction; Bernard is intent on finding something different. A lilacbreasted roller is perched on a tree branch and with its beautiful colors, it is easy to see why it is one of the most photographed birds in Kruger National Park. Bernard pauses and picks up his binoculars to get a better look at an object in the distance. He takes us closer to what he has just seen – two healthy lionesses and four cubs with mange, a skin disease caused by parasites. There is sudden excitement from Bernard and he speeds up the vehicle to show us ‘something special’. He cannot find them and sets off on foot to find the tracks. I spot something moving in the long grass and see the unmistakable shape of the ears – Wild Dogs on the hunt! We try everything to catch Bernard’s attention to let him know we have seen the dogs, from calling and whistling to an African Fish Eagle call. He emerges from the bush and veers off in their direction. They are running and playing through the dense grass. Each one has a different pattern and it is so incredible to watch them chasing each other in a playful fashion.

ntering the Carnegie Club at Skibo Castle in a chauffeur driven Range Rover you get the feeling of what it was like to live in a time when royalty truly ruled the Scottish Highlands.
A stone wall reveals a manicured front lawn large enough to play cricket, which it is sometimes used for. It’s ringed by golden strands of tall fescue that looks like wheat and large full trees—a rarity in this part of Scotland where much of the land has been clear cut. It leads to the circular driveway of a magnificently restored castle with a most unusual marking: a flag with one side boasting the Union Jack of the United Kingdom and the other side bearing the Stars and Stripes of the U.S. There is perhaps no place on earth that flies a flag with this combination and it required special permission of local Scottish authorities and the U.S. government. It refers mostly to the former and current owners of the castle. Records of Skibo Castle date back to the early 13th Century, however, its modern transformation began when wealthy Scottish-American industrialist, Andrew Carnegie, purchased the 8,000-acre estate as a family residence in 1898. Today it is owned by Ellis Short, an Irish-American businessman. He reportedly purchased the property in 2003 for £23 mil-

lion ($30 million) and has since invested another $27 million to modernize and restore the castle and grounds. It is still a work in progress but you couldn’t tell by Skibo’s majestic beauty. It is perhaps best known as the place where Madonna and Guy Ritchie held their wedding in 2000. Well known guests over the years included Bill Clinton, Sir Sean Connery, Jack Nicholson and Michael Jordan. It operates as a members-only club. It has to be one of the most exclusive clubs in the world and it offers an experience that would be hard to duplicate anywhere. The cost is steep for sure. A full membership requires a one-time fee of £25,000 ($33,000) and annual fees of £8,500 ($11,200). The per-night fee is £1,240 ($1,640) for one of the 20 double rooms in the castle. Members can also stay at one of the dozen or lodges scattered about property, ideal for families. In fact, families with small children are required to stay in the lodges. Guests of members and those considering membership pay a little more per night. The fees are steep but what you get in return is everything. Meals, snacks and well-stocked wine and spirits carts are free and constantly available throughout the castle and grounds almost any time of day or night. Activities are also ever-present and include skeet shooting, archery, falconry, fishing, spa services, horseback riding, cycling and tennis. A staff of more than 200, many in traditional Scottish kilts, tend to the needs of the members, care for the property, and with a fleet of jeeps drive guests

throughout the estate. Ellis Short is an accomplished businessman and it may seem like he is making another small fortune charging these seemingly exorbitant fees, but the expense of maintaining and renovating the property means that the castle often operates at an annual loss. From the moment my wife Maria and I arrived we felt at home. Our large suite, “E 5,” is named after Ellis Short’s son, Ellis Short V. Modern light neutral colors with traditional wood furnishings (most likely antique) brightened the space. A small bottle of Skibo’s own 10-year-old single malt Scotch and two glasses provided a warm welcome. (The castle also has its own branded gin.) It was the first of several small surprises during our stay. The bathroom was as large as the bedroom and is completely renovated with new fixtures and appliances. The two rooms are connected by a long hallway. Each room in the castle has a different motif and our room was chinoiserie, with the décor representing Chinese themes. The room had everything except the proper amount of outlets for the connected traveler. But this is a place designed for its guests to disconnect. 42 Upscale Living Magazine
There are very few rules at Skibo and we were encouraged to roam everywhere. While the guest rooms had modern amenities, the public areas in the castle are kept much as it was when the Carnegie family roamed the estate. Andrew Carnegie’s massive, multi-room library is filled with antique books and furnishings. I did some work there on our final day, although I chose not to use the manual Burroughs typewriter on display. The trophy room downstairs is one of the more interesting parts of the castle with a collection of custom hunting rifles, fly fishing rods and the trophies that included large fish, birds and stag heads. We attended a formal dinner our first night in the main dining hall which required a jacket and tie. However, the host of evening, Alan Grant, made it clear it wasn’t going to be a stuffy affair. He appeared with his tie pulled to the side and the top button of his shirt undone. We all quickly followed his lead and the conversation flowed freely. After dinner Maria and I moved to the drawing room for digestifs and snacks by the fireplace and to listen to the castle’s pianist. The next morning during breakfast he was playing the castle’s full-sized pipe organ. When we finally returned to our room there was another surprise: a stuffed rabbit containing a warm water bottle. It was then that Maria never wanted to leave.

Scotland is where golf was invented and for those who worship the links Skibo is a paradise. Its private course designed by Tom Mackenzie, who also oversaw its $3.4 million restoration, is challenging and beautiful with springy bright grass, ringed by tall golden fescue, purple heather, and winding rivers and lochs. Fewer than 4,000 rounds are played on the course each year. It gets such little use members don’t need to reserve tee times. It’s opened to the public in a very limited way and at a high cost (nearly $400 per round). An advantage of having such free access is that if you don’t have four hours to spend on the links you can play as many holes as you want. In the height of summer, when the sun sets near midnight, members will play the final three holes after dinner. The recently renovated stone and glass clubhouse—open for breakfast, lunch and dinner—provides splendid views of the links and the freewheeling Evelix River. For our activities on the second day we chose skeet shooting and archery. Our instructor was patient but we were both hopelessly inept. This was followed by a massage and finally a dip in the pool housed within a magnificent glass walled building. For all its exclusivity there was a total lack of pretense during our two-day stay. Conversations with members were friendly and fun and the staff was always courteous, professional and warm without being haughty. While being wealthy is a requirement in order to afford membership, there are no other prerequisites. One member told me that basically the only requirement is that you’re not a jerk, adding that he knows of only one person who was denied membership for being insufferable. On our bed on our final night was a warm water bottle inside a stuffed lion with a sad expression on its face. That’s the way I felt the next morning when we took the hour-long drive to Inverness for our flight to London; wishing we could have spent one more day.

BECKS SAFARI LODGE
Limpopo Province South Africa | By Heléne Ramackers
T
he latest addition to the Karongwe Portfolio is the charming Becks Safari Lodge, situated in South Africa’s Limpopo Province.
The motto of Karongwe Portfolio ‘one experience, a thousand moments’ is very apt when enjoying a stay at Becks Safari Lodge, which is certainly what you can expect here. With only eleven suites, you can be assured that exclusivity and tranquillity reign.
After a short drive from the Becks gate to the entrance of the lodge, we are met by Sam Gendle, Armand du Toit and Tammy Nolting and their merriment in welcoming us is contagious. A refresher towel and a wonderfully cooling non-alcoholic drink is a preview to the amazing service and fare at Becks. Once the indemnity signing is out of the way, we are taken to our room, which is very spacious in size. Don’t let the exterior fool you – the charcoal coloured façade might not seem the ideal fit for the Bush, but the interior is refreshingly sublime and stylishly furnished. The designs are meant to have high impact, with contemporary and bold accents drawing your eyes to the supreme backdrop overlooking the Drakensberg Mountains while the cobbling waters of the Makhutswi River creates a calming effect.
We thought we had arrived in time for lunch, but are informed that a very substantial afternoon tea is served, ensured to sustain you well until dinnertime. Beautifully displayed on the outside veranda, the choice of food is plentiful. There is so much to choose from: Black Forest Cake, Mini Lemon Cheesecake, Fresh Fruit, Beef Sliders with mustard & pickle, Chicken & Pepper Kebabs, Hot Vegetable Skewer, Potato & Mozzarella Croquet, Whole Wheat Loaf & Assorted Butters, Cheese Board with crackers and Iced Coffee or homemade Lemonade you might want to nod off during the game drive. Our ranger, Setepi Motlutsi and tracker Simon Molobela meet us for our first game drive. We head out to see what we can find and a troop of Chacma baboons have an audible fight and run off into the treetops. Some zebra are crossing the road and to the left of the vehicle, a male giraffe is curiously looking at us. To our right, an elephant is grazing so close to us that we can see his long eyelashes. There is an enormous bull elephant walking across the road and Setepi stops the vehicle to let Simon move from his tracker seat to the confines of the vehicle. Male elephants, especially those in musth, have been known to be very aggressive. Rather safe than sorry. Impalas are going about their business and some white rhino are blissfully feeding. We are heading towards the dam to enjoy sundowners when a water monitor slithers across our path. The hippos in the dam are splashing about and a crocodile is lying on the banks of the dam, 47 Upscale Living Magazine |

T R A V E L enjoying the last rays of the sun with his mouth wide open. Dinner is a delicious feast of Soup, Pork Roast with vegetables and the most decadent meltin-your-mouth Chocolate Mousse. Back at our room, the mosquito net has been dropped and the air conditioner is heating the room. After a cleansing shower, it is time for a good night’s sleep. Setepi gives us a wake-up call at 05:30, and we depart for our morning game drive at 06:00. Thank goodness for hot water bottles and blankets as the pre-sunrise drive can get quite chilly. Setepi informs us that we will be visiting the Southern side of the reserve as they might have found the lions. After a lengthy drive past some rock hyraxes baking in the sun that is finally out, we see them strolling up from the dry riverbed, playful as only sub-adult lions can be. One is sitting ‘posing’ for photographs but there is a vehicle blocking my way and I cannot get a good photo. Not to worry, Setepi assures me, you will see them. Having been on numerous game drives, I know the guides always try their best to get us to see the animals we wish to view, but as Setepi jokingly says ‘the animals don’t always get the memo’. Ducking for a few thorn bushes, she comes straight into view – a stunning lioness sharpening her claws on a tree trunk. Right in front of us, the rest of the pride scurries off in spirited fashion, all ten of them. Simon suddenly indicates to Setepi to stop the vehicle. We are invited to climb off to go on foot to a very special sighting. Nervously, we follow Setepi through the bush in single file. Between the grass, she is so well camouflaged that it would have been easy to miss her had it not been for the fact that she suddenly sat upright. The most stunning cheetah is lying five metres away from us and we are gawking at her statuesque presence. All this driving and fresh morning air has everyone hungry and it is time for breakfast! The breakfast menu is satiating to say the least – choose from Eggs – Fried, Boiled, Poached or Scrambled, Crispy Bacon, Pork Sausage, Chicken Livers and for the Vegetarians, the choice is Grilled Tomato, Sautéed Mushroom and Hashbrowns. All washed down with a warm beverage or freshly squeezed orange juice.
Sesame BBQ Chicken Wings, Mini Rolled Beef Koftas, Mini Vegetable Quiches, Watermelon & Feta with a Balsamic Glaze, Olive Focaccia & Assorted Butter and a Cheese Board with Crackers. Today’s beverage is Iced Tea and Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice. An evening game drive is always a highlight as nocturnal animals sometimes make an appearance. We had hardly started our drive and I still wishfully think out loud that the leopards must be hiding as we haven’t seen one, when Setepi slams on the brakes and almost sends Simon flying. Right next to the vehicle, the most stunning leopard awakens from her afternoon slumber and hurriedly rushes off in an attempt to escape the clicking of camera shutters. She seems to be a scaredy cat. We are dining in the Boma where a huge fire is already lit. A traditional South African barbeque is on offer tonight and the wonderfully fragrant meat is enough to have everyone salivating. The food at Becks is delicious! On our morning game drive, a heavily pregnant zebra looks like she’s about to give birth any day now. A big herd of buffalo make their way to a watering hole where they drink to their heart’s content. Setepi stops the vehicle and indicates to us to follow him. The walk is long and I’m trying to avoid getting ‘kissed’ by a thorn bush. In the clearing, they come into view – three cheetahs looking for a place to lie down. They eventually decide on a termite mound and we are able to take photographs of these majestic creatures, standing three metres away from them. Definitely one experience, a thousand moments. Thank you to Bryan West from Karongwe Portfolio for arranging our stay at Becks Safari Lodge. Views expressed are the author’s own. https://www.karongweportfolio.com/becks/

ALLADALE WILDERNESS RESERVE Quite Possibly the Coziest Luxury Resort in the Scottish Highlands | By Anthony DeMarco
A
bout eight red deer more than 5 feet high stand motionless as if posing for a portrait on an emerald-colored lawn at the edge of the forest. Innes MacNeill brings a blue bucket filled with dried food pellets. A few of the deer approach slowly, cautiously. The tallest one with the largest antlers (12 tines) comes forward and takes the pellets from MacNeill’s hand. He is the leader of the herd given the name Frank. While MacNeill feeds Frank he tosses pellets to the other deer that are more cautious. When the bucket is empty MacNeill walks away and the deer disappear into the forest.
This small herd is among the tamest of the wild fauna in the Alladale Wilderness Reserve, a 23,000-acre estate in the Scottish Highlands that serves as a comfy luxury retreat in a remote natural setting. The main guesthouse has seven cozy rooms that can accommodate 14 people. There are two lodges on the property that provide a more luxurious and secluded experience. For a more rustic experience there’s a bunkhouse that sleeps 18 in a comfortable camp-like atmosphere. There’s even a bunker-like hut in a secluded area of the reserve built into a ledge for picnics. The estate is about an hour’s drive from the city of Inverness. My wife, Maria, and I were taken there by Ted Innes Ker, the founder of Ossian, a company that provides unique travel experiences in the Scottish Highlands. As his Jaguar
SUV masterfully hugged the winding country roads, the former professional golfer says that his young firm can tailor luxurious travel itineraries, including a variety of active adventure tours. He works with a number of castles and estates in the area, including those with British royal provenance. Some are private residences that are occasionally opened to the public under the right circumstances. Ker, who also has royal pedigree, can make it happen. At Alladale, we stayed for one night in the main guesthouse, which has a gym, a small sauna, a billiards room and a comfortable living room with a welcoming, lit fireplace—because even in the summer it gets cold in the Scottish Highlands. The house is stationed on a plateau that provides astonishing views from every window.

Meals are taken communally on a long wooden table beneath chandeliers made of deer antlers. Guests included a couple with their two children from London, solo travelers from Missouri and Sri Lanka, and two young women from Romania. Conversation at dinner and afterwards was easy and enjoyable. Local venison was served for dinner in the form of steak and as sausages for breakfast by the highly capable chef, Tom. For lunch we had locally caught salmon terrine. The manager, Steve, was always on hand providing anything we needed. There are plenty of activities, including trout fishing, pony riding, hiking, mountain biking and stalking (hunting for deer on foot). I believe the best way to enjoy the reserve is as a place for rest, relaxation and the opportunity to learn about the history, culture and ecology of the Scottish Highlands. Paul Lister, a conservationist and multi-millionaire heir to a British furniture retail chain, purchased the property in 2003 and has since set about a highly publicized “rewilding” effort to return the land to its natural state before the clear cutting of forests and the widespread killing of several animal species. It began with the “Highland Clearances” in the 18th and 19th centuries, when farmers were forcefully evicted from their homeland and agrarian way of life to make way for sheep herding, and continued with the industrial revolution and two world wars that followed. Lister has managed the planting of 900,000 indigenous trees (the majority being pine, along with alder, rowan and birch) and has repopulated some of the wildlife. The most noticeable newcomer is a herd of Highland Cattle. The most controversial is a proposal to introduce wolves and bears on the reserve. MacNeill, who manages the 23,000-acre reserve with Lincoln, his ever present Red Labrador Retriever, gave us a tour of the property that is reachable by jeep. A good portion of the land can only be traveled by foot. The Alladale River cuts through windswept hills of grass and exposed rock, with only a scattering of trees. Patches of early summer purple heather mingle with the green terrain. It’s a rugged, beautiful landscape. There is fencing in areas to protect recently planted trees from grazing deer, which are everywhere. Part of the reason Lister says he wants to introduce predators is to cull the deer population and protect the saplings. At one point we stopped along the Alladale River where the Highland Cattle graze so MacNeill can pour food pellets to supplement their diet. It’s a scenic spot with a clear view of the rugged, bending river making its way through the hills. The cattle are distinguished by their long horns and long wavy coats that even extend over their eyes. 54 Upscale Living Magazine |
MacNeill also took us to view three Scottish wildcats being kept in an enclosure. The idea is to eventually release these predatory cats into the wild. They look a lot like large domesticated cats except their stare says “don’t mess with me.” None of us will live to see if Lister’s goal to return the land to its original state will happen. But visitors can enjoy the process as well as the comfort of the estate.

The Project covers the entire travel experience beginning on the ground with topics like; how to overcome the fear of flying, countering allergies, how to best prepare for a flight etc. Then, the actual flight is made easier with information on avoiding dehydration, blocked nose as well as exercising on board against the negative effects of pressure changes and similar topics. OCEANIA CRUISES Top 5 Things to Love About Oceania Cruises | By Debbi K. & William D. Kickham
A
hoy, upscale travelers! We recently sailed on an extended cruise for 28 days on Oceania Cruises, on the Insignia, from Rome, through the Mediterranean, up to Ireland, then across the Atlantic, back to the East Coast in Montreal. Why 28 days? Extended cruises are a hot new trend nowadays, as sophisticated travelers understand that a typical 10- to even 14-day cruise would never be enough to truly unwind and take in all 64 Upscale Living Magazine |
that such an experience has to offer. After packing, planning – and most important – dealing with the torture that is air travel nowadays – intrepid cruisers increasingly sign up for extended cruises – if they’re not already considering a World Cruise, that is. (World Cruises can last anywhere from approximately 150 to 180 days.) In fact, on Oceania’s Insignia, we met numerous travelers who were “ATW’s” (on the “Around The World”

cruise for seven months) – and they still expressed regret when disembarking. We sailed for almost a month and here is our report about what we like about Oceania. You’re going to love it too. 1). The Tranquility Bed. With this bed, I thee wed. I’m serious – we want to marry this bed, as it holds us in its arms every night, and we cozy up in comfort. The Oceania Cruises Bed Collection includes the Prestige Tranquility Mattress, which is a custom-designed mattress composed of 400 encapsulated springs covered by memory foam. It all ensures a deep and restorative sleep. And yes, you can take it with you: A king-sized mattress with box springs costs $3,290, and each pillow is $129 (www.Oceaniabedcollection.com)· 2). The cuisine. Legendary French chef Jacques Pepin is the Executive Culinary Director for Oceania, and the cuisine is delicious and decadent any way you slice it. Dinner might include New York strip steak with steak frites and garlic butter; herb-crusted rotisserie chicken in a yummy gravy; plus poached Norwegian salmon with rice pilaf. Executive Chef Farid Oudir assures that every morsel is magnificent, no matter what you prefer. “We can create lowfat, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, you name it,” says Chef Oudir. Even better, in the Terrace Café, (the more casual dining venue) “You can have a lobster or shrimp or delicious sushi every night,” says Chef Oudir. The staff on Oceania is first-rate and they jump to the opportunity to assist you with whatever you need. Also important: The two alternative Michelin-worthy restaurants onboard – Polo Grill and Toscana -- don’t charge additional fees for your reservation (as some cruise lines do). In Toscana, try the artichoke timbales, and the chocolate lasagna for dessert! 3). Canyon Ranch spa and cuisine and excursions. We are huge fans of Canyon Ranch – Debbi has visited Canyon Ranch in Lenox, Mass., for
years, and it is a delight to know that there is a Canyon Ranch SpaClub aboard all Oceania cruise ships. For example, Debbi had an exceptional Environ facial featuring this posh brand you will never find on another cruise line. (www.dermaconcepts.com, www. CanyonRanch.com) Oceania has also taken the unprecedented step of offering special Canyon Ranch excursions in ports of call. In Spain Deb visited an apiary, and even donned a beekeeper’s suit for the interview – plus bought gorgeous beauty products. www.museomielranchocortesano. com And be assured: The experience is also conveyed in the Dining Room – with exceptional Canyon Ranch cuisine and recipes that ensure you of delicious, lowfat food. For example, a 500-calorie dinner: Artichokes in forest mushroom vinaigrette; consommé with Parmesan tuiles; and a scrumptious cod in ginger sauce. With a diet like that, you’ll never feel deprived. 4). Special extras: Most “Around The World” guests were sailing from New York to Miami for 180 days. Many were thrilled with their experience, and why not? “ATW” passengers receive numerous advantages including two-for-one cruise fares plus free first-class roundtrip airfare, along with a wealth of other freebies including pre-paid gratuities, unlimited internet, luggage delivery, round-trip transfers, one-night pre-cruise luxury hotel accommodations, and much more. There are also numerous special ATW excursions. 5). The entertainment is first-rate. It included the unbelievably talented violinists Laszlo and Claudia, (www.laszloandclaudia.com), Britain’s-Got-Talent-finalists Zyrah Rose quartet plus flute player Clare Langan who wows with every note. Irish comedian Billy Boyle was also a high note – and as he remarked, remember: If you look like your passport photo, you’re probably too ill to travel. https://www.oceaniacruises.com/

ARMAGNAC The Best Bottles Cognac to Purchase | By Jennica B.
Armagnac is a type of Brandy produced in Gascony, a former province, and now a region of Southwest France. As a member of the brandy family, it is most closely related to Cognac, although there are some noticeable differences between them – More on that later. Like Cognac, the ageing of Armagnac is developed over time, in Oak barrels, which contributes to the taste and gives the liquor its dark, amber color. However, Armagnac is different from other spirits because it is low in alcohol (i.e. between 40% – 50%, similar to Rum or Schnapps), and there is no water added in production.
I
n ancient history, Armagnac was believed to be a merry-medicinal, of sorts - A drink of choice, believed in by many for many of its healing properties. Among these perceived special powers by potency, present a myriad of “cures,” like treating various ailments - now disproved by modern medicine. Armagnac was also commonly used as a salve, during massage, and said to sharpen peoples’ 70 Upscale Living Magazine |
mental abilities, vis-a-vis, relaxing one’s body and mind, when applied topically, and also making them speak more fluently, when drunk. We agree that there may be some truth to these theories, although probably most notable when surrounded by like-minded peers, served in likeminded quantities. COGNAC VS. ARMAGNAC – WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? 1. The wine base in Armagnac is sweeter, and distillation only undergoes one round. Armagnac has a stronger taste, as a result, because of the distillation process, which preserves most of the flavor in the base. 2. The wine base in Cognac is very strong, and it needs to be distilled twice, to remove some of the toxins. Dual-Distillation, ultimately, lightens the flavor of the liquor - It can’t be twice distilled, without losing some of the taste. 3. Cognac uses mostly one type of grape in production, the Ugni Blanc variety. 4. Armagnac is produced from many different grapes, with lighter flavors, and the wine base is more well-blended, than the wine bases of Cognac.
SEPTEMBER 2017 www.upscalelivingmag.com
ARMAGNAC USES FOUR TYPES OF GRAPES TO GET THE BEST RESULT. HERE IS AN EXPLANATION OF THE PLANNING THAT GOES INTO PRODUCTION – PERFECT PICKS:
BACCO 22A | Bacco, the grape named after the Roman God Bacchus (LINK: https://mytrendingstories.com/article/bacchus-glitz-up-with-atwist/), is a White grape that was most highly sought after in the early 1900s. And Bacco 22A, is a hybrid grape, derived from Folle Blanche and Noah grapes. This type of grape is not used in Cognac, one of the main differences between Cognac and Armagnac. Taste: Bacco Grapes are known for their fruity, light, very sweet, unique taste (like raisins). These appear, on the vine, as bright green or white grapes and have a subtle sharpness to their taste when eaten; they are most often picked when they are very young, or slightly under ripe.
FOLLE BLANCHE | These are the most traditional grapes of the Gascony Region, and they have, typically, been replaced by Bacco Blanc; however, Folle Blanche grapes are still being used in the production of Armagnac. Folle Blanche grapes grow wildly and quickly, and are very common all over the Southwest region of France. Therefore, these grapes are not planted here as often anymore, and other varieties are picked in addition. Taste: Folle Blanche grapes have a characteristically dry, acidic, or slightly bitter taste. The citrus flavor they contribute to Armagnac is lighter and sharper, like the citrusy taste of green apple or a more sour hint, like the zest of lime.
COLOMBARD | The grapes that also go by the name “blanquette,” are the special kind of grapes that are used in the very first type of Champagne ever made, “Blanquette de Limoux.” These grapes are White grapes, and they are very widely used in both Armagnac and Cognac. Taste: Colombard grapes are fruity-sweet, and used for both doux or brut wine and similar spirits. These grapes have a more acidic, tart or hardhitting, bitter taste, as opposed to being simply sweet, as their appearance suggests. The fruitiness of the grapes is more exotic, as a result, contributing to the full flavor of Armagnac.
UGNI BLANC | Ugni Blanc grapes are the most commonly planted grapes, in the Southwest Region of France, at present. Used in the production of Armagnac, they are white, until they turn a slight, pinkishhue, when over ripe. These grapes are small to medium sized, and very juicy, which is why they are among the most commonly used type of grapes for making Armagnac – That, and the taste. Taste: Ugni Blanc grapes have a unique blend of flavors, like plain, green tea or matcha (without the creamy texture), combined with a very subtle, sweetness, reminiscent of lemon. The grapes are known for their high acidity, and are bolder in flavor, as a result.

S P I R I T S Those who enjoy Armagnac as an aperitif, are highly attuned to the difference. While Cognac might seem much more smooth in sip, it also tastes much lighter. As the distillation in Cognac is a more lengthy process, Armagnac is much bolder and flavorful, as a result. Savorers of spirit are treated to more intense infusions of Oak, Citrus (e.g. Dried, Candied Fruit), sleek sweetness and a vivid velvetiness, with warmer accents of Brown Sugar, in a smooth, creamy, lush drink.
HERE ARE THE TOP THREE CHOICES FOR THE BEST BOTTLES. With modest prices like these, relative to Cognac, we suggest that you either Split (one bottle of Armagnac, one bottle of Cognac) or Double Down (buy two bottles). Armagnac Black-Jack:
DOMAINE BOINGNIERES (Estimated Price: $90 USD)
FRANCOIS DAZZORE LES GRANDES ASSEMBLAGE, (Estimated Price: $95 USD)
Domaine Boingnieres bottles have been around since the 1800s. Developed by the Armagnac manufacturer of the same name, Boingnieres has remained in the family for six generations. This solid reputation and development over time, contribute to the overall quality of the brand, considered among the best in the business.
Francois Dazzor Armagnac brings us a unique, sweet taste of Sugar, Honey and Almond, blended into subtle hints of Chocolate and Fruit-Flavors, such as Peach. A smooth sip, with a kick, Dazzore has a richer texture a bit spicy on the palette - with tasting notes of Cinnamon and a sharp hint of Sambuca or Ouzo like flavor.
Stored and aged in classic, oak barrels, over six years, these Hors D’Age bottles are well loved, XO.
The Vintage bottles have been aged and stored for over 12 years.

presented, in clear bottles, with visually stimulating labels, due to the interesting writing across their centers. It’s a step down from some of the higher end, collectorlike, bottles that are artistically crafted, and presented so dramatically well. On the
rmagnac drinkers will enjoy these more intense infusions, and invest wisely; The only thing we’re not completely sold on are the bottles themselves. In relation to the fancier, Cognac bottles, on the high or vintage end, Armagnac comes more simply 72 Upscale Living Magazine |

FRANCOIS DARROZE CHATEAU DO GAUBE BAS ARMAGNAC (Estimated Price: $250) Dazzore has been making Armagnac since the 70s, and Beyond Age, bottles from the 70s are very bold. These bottles date back to those beginning years, when Darroze began producing its first bottles. For a comparatively small cost, in relation to Cognac dating back to the same year, it’s good to have a bottle behind the bar.
upside: These choices come at a fraction of the cost, and at 40% - 50% alcohol, the flavors are so much more than half-full. So is your glass, my friend, Cheers!
