The Baby Grand Has Landed! In December 2008, our beloved Ben Zander, conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, mentioned on Dr D’s Classic FM radio programme that KMA was seeking a baby grand piano… A few days later Liz Maughan of Gauteng wrote in to offer her much loved Weber baby grand! Liz, an avid pianist, is unable to play piano much these days due to debilitating arthritis and she decided she would like to see her “baby” put to good use… and it is! Thanks to Josie Borain of Hout Bay and Dorianne Cara Weil (“Dr D”) the piano was transported by road to Hout Bay and assembled in the Cultural Community Centre where it is safely stored and used for lessons and community singing evenings.

Zack Ward Climbs Kilimanjaro
Zack and some members of the choir (top); Mr Banda and his recorder group (bottom)
In July this year Zack Ward of SACS joined a group of classmates to climb the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, He was one of 5 boys who made it to the top and at 5895 metres above sea level that is no mean feat. What made this climb so special is that Zack dedicated all the sponsorship money he raised beforehand to KMA! A total of R3910.92 was raised and designated for our little beginner recorder group from the Moravian School in Hout Bay. A very big thank you
goes out to all the generous sponsors < Thank you Zack and Wendy for all your support and love, and to Jane Bodin for helping us with the marketing.

H.E.A.R.T has heart! After the first non-racial elections in South Africa Professor Denis Goldberg founded the development organisation Community H.E.A.R.T. in London in 1995 to help to improve the living standards of Black South Africans more quickly.

Ebrahiem Manuel of Simonstown told his ancestral story about 2 brothers: from Indonesia: In 1752 one was captured and incarcerated in the slave dungeons in Simonstown and both brothers kept diaries of what happened 256 years ago, which have been passed down from generation to generation.
Together with partners in South Africa Community H.E.A.R.T. gives priority to health, education and reconstruction training projects based on the principle of selfhelp. They try not to run
projects but give support to local initiatives, small and large. With the support of German friends Professor Goldberg established Community H.E.A.R.T. e.V. in Essen in Germany in 1996. It was from here that Denis secured a very generous donation of R30 000 for KMA, which was channelled through The Sentinel Experience in Hout Bay, another of Denis’ initiatives.
With this money KMA was able to purchase A bass amp, a guitar amp, a bass guitar, 4 beginner violins, 1 full size violin and a keyboard bag. Additionally we were able to finance 2 terms of music lessons and various admin costs. We wish to thank Denis from the bottom of OUR hearts - and all who were involved in this wonderful gift, including Marshall Music for the generous discount they gave us.
Sharing Stories Of Love And Living On May the 16th 2009, events around the world celebrated sharing life stories in communities and organisations. KMA hosted just such an event in collaboration with the fabulous Bonfire Theatre Company. As luck would have it the 16th yielded a miserable, stormy and wet day so we postponed our proceedings to the following week. On the 23rd the sun came
out and shone on our day of inspiration‌ we had stories re-enacted by Bonfire, as they were told by refugees and South Africans from all walks of life. As we were confronted by our individual assumptions and judgements we all came to realize one fundamental truth: we are all precious and unique. We can only hope that one day human kind learns how to respect
itself enough to honour the story in each of us. Thank you to Bon Gertz for the use of the Community Centre and to St Elmo's for providing the pizzas!

KMA pupils spent the morning of June the 16th at the Baxter Theatre, where we were entertained by young musicians from a number of music organizations in Cape Town, describing and demonstrating instruments and musical styles. Out of the 15 snug blankets donated to the lucky draw, 4 of our pupils won one
each! A lucky day! Thank you to Sue Kievits who managed to raise the money we needed to buy the pupils a travel lunch pack each and to Hout Bay Superspar for the delicious rolls. And, to the pupils, thank you for being such well
behaved, perfect ambassadors for KMA!

Marimba Project In Imizamu Yethu
Jimi Sibindi, a well-known and respected figure in IY, is one of the most innovative gentlemen you will meet. Amongst his many ideas for making a living, making
marimbas to sell to the public is one we hope to support, funding allowing. KMA has developed a project with Mr Sibindi which would involve 8 children (2 groups of 4) from across Hout Bay. Whilst one group is learning how to play the marimbas, the other group will be tutored in making their own set. The groups swap after an hour of instruction. At the end of the project the pupils produce their own set of marimbas and are able to sell them to
schools or individuals. The profits then go towards funding tuition for 2 new groups. Of course, the only thing stopping us is funding. Whilst we await the outcomes of proposals, we were wondering… anyone out there wanting to support this fabulous idea? Using all recycled materials this project is environmentally friendly and empowering local artisans while teaching our children valuable skills and heritage.
Just don't give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there is love and inspiration, I don't think you can go wrong. Ella Fitzgerald

Who is KMA? In 2007 Kronendal Music Academy was formed to address the ongoing lack of cultural stimulation that face the youth and the community as a whole in Hout Bay, with particular emphasis on the underprivileged and economically challenged areas. Coupled with this was a burning desire to provide a platform with which to initiate racial and social interaction and integration amongst the three very distinct communities in Hout Bay: The “white affluent” valley residents, Hangberg - traditionally a fishing village - and Imizamu Yethu informal settlement. Starting from scratch KMA began developing individual tuition, group activities, ensembles, workshops and community events, as well as a Youth Choir of 65 pupils. Since day one, all of our activities have successfully united members from these
three areas and the Academy has become synonymous with integration development. With a total of 47 students involved (funded as well as paying pupils) we have 10 teachers giving individual music tuition in cello, violin, classical guitar, rock and jazz guitar, piano, vocal training, recorder, drum kit, flute, clarinet and saxophone. Added to this we have 14 children involved in groups: beginner recorder, theory and a jazz band. We have provided countless workshops to the pupils as well as the community and we have established a weekly community singing evening for anyone who enjoys singing. It is free of charge and has proved to be a very effective tool for social interaction and integration. We have the support of the local Cultural Community Centre building and Kronendal Primary school, which serve as our base and teaching venues.
What To Look Out For In Term 3 Our annual variety concert is coming up at the end of September… coupled with International Peace Day on the (21st September) we aim to present a weekend of interesting and entertaining events that will promote the message of peace in our community and amongst our pupils and their families. Watch for further notice… On the 5th of September we welcome the 'Quartete Riaz', a Brazilian guitar/percussion group who live and work in Holland. They will be presenting a workshop for the KMA pupils and friends. The Community Singing Evenings continue to grow in popularity. We meet every Tuesday evening at 7pm for an hour and a half, at the Cultural Community Centre. Admission is free and singing with all your heart is a pre-requisite! Keep an eye on the Sentinel Newspaper for further notices about our movie nights…
