CHAPMAN’S peak After traveling along “ Chappies”, known to us as Chapmans Peak Drive, arguably one of the most scenic marine drives in the world, you are left with a new appreciation of majestic scenery at its most spectacular. The 9km route with sheer drops of sea below and towering mountains rising above you boasts 114 curves of endless twists & turns, winding it’s way between Noordhoek and Hout Bay on the Atlantic Coast, skirting the rocky coastline of Chapman’s Peak. (593m). An absolute photographers dream & paradise for motorists, sightseers, picnickers, runners, hikers, cyclists & bikers, Chappies offers many viewpoints overlooking the Hout Bay Harbour & glorious coastline, not to mention excellent whale watching during the annual migration between mid-August and mid-November.

Page 6 EXPERIENCE HOUT BAY

Chapmans Peak Hotel has been a landmark in Hout Bay since the early 1900s, when on completion it became the pride of the local community. Set against a backdrop of deep green foliage of milk woods and standing at the foot of Constantiaberg, the exterior has undergone considerable change during its existence. The building is still a fine example of a seaside hotel.

Due to alterations over the years the interior has undergone a number of changes. Fortunately many of the original features are still intact. Four fireplaces still have their irreplaceable art nouveau tiles, marble sides and mantles and old iron gratings with brass embellishments. The folding doors between the dining room and the sitting room, the sturdy teak bar counter, the pillars with moulded Corinthian capitals, the windows and the high ceilings are reminders of the gracious early 1900s. Chapmans Peak Hotel has become the grand old lady of outdoor seafood restaurants in Cape Town with decades of worldwide reputation for its famous calamari and seafood. This famous Hout Bay establishment was the originator of the ´seafood-in-a-pan´ concept and is still very much in demand for a languid Sunday lunch, to be enjoyed on the Terrace on a sunny day or in the warmth of the spacious Dining Room on a chilly day. The large sun-drenched terrace, with breath-taking views of the bay, beach and valley is a popular spot with locals and the movers-and-shakers alike.

hout bay NOW & THEN The History of the village dates back to even before Jan Van Riebeek landed on Cape Town’s pearly white beaches, and deemed “Houtbayken”, fit as an alternate safe anchorage for his ships – ships being unable to anchor in Table Bay during the months of May to November, due to the wild north-west winter storms. The timber in the forest on shore so awed him, his journal entry read “The forest are the finest in the World and contain timber as long, thick and straight as one should wish”. Sadly the forest that so captured his attention was soon stripped and

Many know this tiny village on the other side of Table Mountain, and perceive it as only a small fishing village on the “other side” of the mountain. Centrally situated to Cape Town and the V & A Waterfront, Constantia Winelands, major sports fields and shopping centres as well as Cape Point Nature Reserve this area is misjudged at first glance, it has developed into a thriving community that holds the ideals of small town life close to heart, and is the ideal destination from which to start your holiday. cut down to nothing within a generation. The trees gracing the slopes today are mostly exotic but one can almost imagine what a sight this beautiful sheltered harbour was on that day. Fishing was a naturally given, and to this day many of the locals earn their daily living from the coastal bounty. Through the years the community came to realise that they need to protect what has always been their home and livelihood and started looking at expanding the then small tourism industry in this nook of Cape Town. Today, the working harbour

continues to process and export the daily catch and is a definite stop for many visitors. Cultural tours open up the colourful life of locals while encouraging their dreams to succeed. Established hiking and biking trails offer all who are willing, unsurpassed beauty and scenery, flora that will keep the curious enthralled for many hours, activities for all from every walk of life - there is so much to do in this small town that is bursting with energy.

Come along and enjoy the ride.

The Packing Shed – c 1900 known as The Barn, in Beach Crescent. Built by the Trautman Family as stables for their horses and shelter for poultry and their cows (the ones with 2 short legs that used to graze on Hanging Meadow). The back section served as a dairy. If you dig up the current cement flooring, you will still find some of the cobbled floor underneath. In the 1930's, Trans Atlantic Fisheries, belonging to Christian Trautman, packed the first rock lobster tails, in this shed, hence the name The Packing Shed, for export to the United States of America. This soon became a multi-million dollar export business. The Barn has a special energy. Warm, friendly and inviting. In the 1990's The Barn, was home to Christine Calder's Antique business, and to this day, people still come looking for antiques, at the TOBI offices in The Barn.

Die Plaashuis – c 1890, known as Deli Delish, in Beach Crescent Die Plaashuis, was built in about 1890, by Johan Trautman for his brother Christian. The Barn, next door housed the farm animals, as well as fishing boats and trek nets. In the 1950's Die Plaashuis was leased, by the Trautmanns to SAPS as accommodation for the Station Commander and his family. The Trautmanns subsequently built the Police Station next door on the corner of Beach Crescent and The Promanade. This was demolished, and is now a vacant lot. The stoep (verandah), was recently enclosed, thus removing much of the Victorian charm this farmhouse had.

Safe Hiking Walking on mountain terrain and wilderness areas can be both extremely exhilarating and also very dangerous. To ensure that only good be taken from these hikes here are a few basic safety guidelines to help along the way.

Page 26 EXPERIENCE HOUT BAY

Always go prepared. Take along wind and waterproof clothing and wear good footgear (strong boots or hiking shoes with non slip soles). If climbing more dangerous routes, carry an emergency space blanket, compass and whistle as well as a first aid kit. Only experienced climbers should attempt these routes and preferably with a guide. Be certain to have enough food and water for your trip. Leave unnecessary valuables behind. Always inform someone of your intended route and time of return with stipulations in case of an emergency. Choose a route according to experience, ability and fitness of all members in party. Every hiking group should have a registered tour guide as leader who has experienced the chosen route before. Participants must listen to leader at all times and always stay together. Pace yourself to avoid walking in the dark. Check the weather forecast before the start and do not continue in bad weather. If new to hiking avoid long or difficult routes and pay attention to danger signs on the route. Do not descend unknown ravines or cliffs. Carry a detailed map or guide book with description of route taken. Carry a full charged cell phone but note there is not always reception. Programme the emergency number ( 0861106417) on your phone and always report mountain fires. Programme “ICE” ( in case of emergency) with family member/ friend’s name and number. Ensure you can retrace your steps at all times. Take care not to pollute the streams on your way as others also use these to replenish their strength. Keep a good look out for snakes... especially during summer... puff adders like to lie in the middle of a warm path... if victim of a snake bite... do not try to return.. call the emergency number and keep the patient quiet until professional assistance is received.

Enjoy Nature and respect the tranquillity offered in abundance.

Military heritage In 1783 the West Fort Battery was constructed with eight 24-pounder Dutch guns. Over the years the Hout Bay & Llandudno Heritage Trust noticed that the ancient cannons had suffered extensive corrosion from their exposed position on the edge of Hout Bay. After a protracted stay in ”hospital”, West Fort's historic Swedish cannons dating from the middle of the 18th Century, all 6 restored cannons finally came home to rest at West Fort on the 17th July 2013.on their repaired stone bases, and new concrete carriages. West Fort thus has five 24 pounders, one 18 pounder and one 36 pounder.

Other historic Military sites in Hout Bay are ... Constantia Nek Redoubt – c 1781 Klein Gibraltar Battery – c 1771 Military Road 2nd World War: The Apostle Battery – overlooking Llandudno Fort Collins Radar Station– on Karbonkelberg, boasted the first magnetron unit in South Africa

cultural

diversity

Here in the 'Republic' of Hout Bay we have a microcosm of society in South Africa with 3 different cultures residing in close proximity with each other within our beloved Valley. Schools have been improved and built, Sports fields have been completed and various programs put in place to help and educate those in need. There is still more to be done, please see listings for various Organisations and NGO's helping assist these worthy causes. Diversity in many areas will not yield as many blossoming prospects as it has produced over time right here in the Bay. The two most prominent areas containing different cultures are Hangberg and Imizamo Yethu – Walking Tours are available to interact and experience first hand our amalgamated community – please see details Africa Moni and Navadly Koopman, or experience Dinner@Mandelas. hout bay MANOR Hout Bay Manor, (originally known as the Royal Hotel), was built in 1871 traditional Cape Colonial style, it became the social hub of the Hout Bay community. Many relaxed and gathered under the graceful oaks which are still standing today and are now over 120 years old. In 1920 it became known as Hout Bay Hotel and only became Hout Bay Manor in 1992. Having changed names and owners over the next few decades, it was decided towards the end of 2005 to restore the building to its true African Heritage. Listed as a historical building, special care was taken by both the architects and owners to retain as much of the existing essence and fabric of the building. Pure honours the buildings rich history by hosting live bands every Saturday evening while patrons enjoy the atmosphere. All facets of this unique destination are drenched in historic wonder and culture, which has been captured in the decor from the rooms in the Manor to the Inzolo Wellness Suite that always beckons all to taste the peace of an era long passed.
