SHELLEY POINT NEWS A community newsletter dedicated to fostering a sense of community and the free flow of information at Shelley Point

Jan/Feb 2019

FROM THE EDITOR: Hi All, And a happy and healthy New Year to you all! I sincerely hope that 2019 will be a time to remember in the best possible way and that you will all have a blessed and peaceful year. You will notice that this issue is a combined issue for January and February. Our Shelley Point News team are taking a much-needed break to recharge the old batteries. There is a very short turnaround period between issues – no sooner is one released and we are already starting work on the next one and so, there is generally little or no rest between each newsletter! But, we will all be back again, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed with the March 2019 issue. We are also delighted to present our twelve finalists for the 2018 Leapfrog Properties Photo of the Year! Now, it is up to you to select the overall winner who will receive the grand prize. There are so many stunning photos to choose from, all of which do justice to our beautiful estate. So, go ahead and vote for your favourites. You may be the recipient of the lucky draw prize. Got anything on your mind? Remember that this is your newsletter so feel free to email us with your queries, comments and concerns. We always enjoy receiving communications from you. May the next two months herald a fabulous start to the year! Terry - shelleypointnews@gmail.com FROM THE CHAIRMAN: It appears that I was premature in announcing the end of my term as a trustee of the SPHOA. For my sins, I have been re-elected for a further year and will be staying on as chairman until the first quarterly board meeting in February 2019. It remains to be seen if the board will elect me to the chair once again. In the meantime, I would like to thank all who attended the AGM on 20th December for their participation in the affairs of the HOA. It is much appreciated.

It remains only for me to thank members for their support and to wish one and all a healthy, happy and prosperous 2019. Cheers, Ian Mac HOMEOWNERS HAVE THEIR SAY: Back issues of the newsletter: Anne writes, ‘Our family has recently bought a property in Shelley Point so we were delighted to receive a copy of Shelley Point News. I believe that the newsletter has been going for a few years now and I would love to read some of the previous issues. Are there any hard copies available that I can borrow? Or are they possibly available online?’ (The editor replies...Welcome to Shelley Point, Anne, and pleased that you enjoy the newsletter. All our back issues are available in the archived section on the Shelley Point Homeowner Association website at www.sphoa.co.za). UPDATE FROM THE SHELLEY POINT BOARD OF TRUSTEES: The annual general meetings of both the SPHOA and the Sports and Social Club were held at the Shelley Point Hotel on 20th December 2018. The meetings were well attended and the debate was, as always, lively and highly interactive. Most of the issues dealt with were routine legal requirements for an AGM, but the following issues are highlighted for members’ information: 

 

Minor amendments were made to the minutes of the last AGM before the minutes were adopted as a true reflection of the meeting. The revised, adopted minutes will be made available for perusal shortly if members would like to do so. The constitution of the HOA was amended to provide Trustees with the capacity to enter mortgage agreements going forward. This amendment was required to facilitate the establishment of an HOA recreation center. Minor adjustments were made to the proposed changes to the Shelley Point Building Design Manual (BDM). The revised, adopted BDM will be available on the HOA web site soon. It was agreed that a Recreation Center should be established at Shelley Point to provide a venue for HOA and Sports and Social Club activities. o The funding model for this was agreed and more details in this regard will be provided soon. o The preferred siting for the Recreation Center is unclear with several members objecting to the proposed siting at the current childrens playground. Further work will be done to clarify options before proceeding. Further communication in this regard will be made in due course. o A detailed project proposal is to be prepared before the project is initiated. The budgets for both the HOA and the SPHOAS&SC were accepted pending adjustment to accommodate the preferred funding model. These budget adjustments will be made shortly in order to ensure that January levy statements reflect the approved levy increase.

Please feel free to contact the Estate Manager, Administrator or one of the trustees for further information if you require it.

SECURITY REPORT (Daniel Plaatjies): I can proudly announce that, at the time of writing, we made it through 2018 with no serious issues or incidents. It has been two years now since I was appointed as the Security Manager and I have tried my best to start implementing some new security systems and protocols without causing a negative impact on the visitors, contractors and homeowners. Please do keep in mind that all homeowners are encouraged not to use casual or temporary workers, as we find this results in a higher security risk for the estate. Also, we would like to reassure you all that we have the support and back up of the St Helena Bay SAPS Crime Prevention unit should there be a crisis within the estate. This is a great liaison to have moving into the future. Traffic Control: There has been a significant increase in visitors, contractors and even residents ignoring the speed limit within the Estate and not going around circles correctly. This places children and animals at risk so we appeal to everyone to please adhere to the speed limit. LEAPFROG PROPERTIES PHOTO OF THE MONTH: The following twelve photos labelled A – L (in no particular order) are the finalists for the 2018 Leapfrog Properties Photo of the Year Competition. ALL photos were taken at Shelley Point. Please look through them, choose your top three pictures and then email your selections in order of preference (1st, 2nd and 3rd) to shelleypointnews@gmail.com. Photos will be allocated points according to the number of votes they receive and the position given. The photo receiving the highest number of points will receive a cash prize of R500 courtesy of Maurits Marnewick of Leapfrog Properties. They have also donated prizes of R250 and R150 for the two photos receiving the second and third highest number of votes respectively. There will also be a lucky draw prize of R100 drawn from all the names of people who have sent in their votes. Closing date for sending your votes is Sunday 10 February 2019. Any votes received after 10 February will not be included in the final count. Please note that the winners are selected from your votes only! Staff from Leapfrog Properties or from Shelley Point News have absolutely no influence on the outcome of the results. All votes will be kept and are available for inspection by whoever would like to see them.

SPORT AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES: Sundowners Get-Together: With Holiday Season festivities behind us, come and enjoy a quiet and relaxing drink with other Shelley Pointers on Friday evening 25 January from 17h30 onwards. Golf, Bowls and Tennis News: If you are interested in participating in any of the sports on offer at Shelley Point, please consult the directory on the last page for contact details of the captains. Carols at the lighthouse: Big thanks to Sam and Ian Wilkinson for organizing this on 21 December. Despite the windy conditions, much fun was had by all who attended. Donations of food and toys for less fortunate children and dogs in the community were also collected and distributed. Thanks to all who contributed. Bridge News: The annual Christmas Bridge Tournament held on Thursday 6 December was a huge success with players from all over the West Coast participating – even from as far afield as Cape Town! In addition to some extremely challenging bridge, a magnificent Christmas feast was put on courtesy of Jenny Sivertsen and her team. In fact, Chris & Jenny Sivertsen and Niel and Tjokkie du Toit, even gave up the opportunity to participate so that they could ensure that everything on the day ran smoothly. Big thanks to them as well as to Gerilde, Mike and Nancy who worked tirelessly the entire day and Norman for overseeing everything. Much praise was also heaped onto the gate guards who personally welcomed each player as they arrived and directed them to the club. It was a very closely contested tournament with Terry Mackintosh (Shelley Point) and Mitty Collett (Laaiplek) emerging as the eventual winners of the floating trophy. Runners up were Susan Theron (Velddrif) and Kay Law (Langebaan) while third place went to Anne and Theo du Plessis from Port Owen.

Head Chef, Jenny Sivertsen, with Harm Jansie – one of the participants from Darling.

LIFE AT SHELLEY POINT: Rainfall statistics at Shelley Point: According to our rainfall recorder, Henri Roux, we received an astonishing 18.5mm for the period of mid-November to mid-December. An unusual amount for this time of the year! This brings total rainfall for 2018 to 200.5mm which is only slightly below the long term annual

8

average for the area (220mm) and which compares very favourably to 2017’s total of 115mm. Let’s keep fingers crossed for another good year of rains. Art Classes resume in 2019: Following the very successful Sundowners function at the end of November where local artist, Jannie Jordaan treated us all to a demonstration on how to create a magnificent oil painting in under an hour, many Shelley Pointers expressed an interest in attending Jannie’s classes which are held on Monday mornings at the Sports and Social Club. If you are interested, please book your place by contacting Jannie at 0732514240 or by email on jannie.jordaan9@gmail.com Jannie, who was born in 1961, loved sketching as a child but had no formal education in Art and only started painting for the first time in 1994. His paintings soon became so popular that he resigned from his job in 2007 and began painting on a full-time basis. He was commissioned to do the murals in the Laguna Mall and it was as a result of this, that people began asking him to give classes. To date, Jannie has sold an astounding 10,000 paintings and has taught more than 5 000 people the principles of oil painting. He also paints and exhibits every year at the Laguna Mall over the festive season where he typically sells between thirty to fifty paintings. For more information about Jannie, visit his website www.janniejordaan.com Pictured below is one of Jannie’s iconic Weskus paintings.

Snoek on the couch - a 'must read' or a wonderful gift: I was privileged to recently get an opportunity to read Shelley Point Homeowner, Robin Emsley's, fascinating and absorbing book, Snoek on the couch. Not only is it an interesting and engaging account of all matters pertaining to snoek, life, language, the universe and everything, the photographs of St Helena Bay and its local fishermen are truly beautiful as well. I would

9

highly recommend purchasing a copy of this limited-edition publication before stocks are sold out. A few copies have been made available for purchase from Lindy at the office for R275 – R50 cheaper than

purchasing online. All proceeds from the sale of the book will go towards the establishment of a Research Fellowship to benefit snoek fishermen from our local community. VASCO SAYS:

Please drive slowly around Shelley Point! We are fond of our children and our animals and don’t want their lives endangered by speeding drivers! The speed limit is 40km/hr. Happy New Year to you all.
