Hello all! Looking back at the last 6 months of 2010, it is astonishing to notice how quickly it has sped by. This year kicked off with our “New Pupil’s Concert”, featuring pupils who had joined us at the end of 2009 and the new pupils from first term this year. At the same we also saw the debut of the new KMA Jazz Band members who raised the roof with their renditions of Herbie Hancock pieces and other Jazz Standards. As new pupils keep joining KMA regularly, we wish you all the best and most importantly, wish you LOTS OF FUN! Before we move on with news from this year, there are a few wonderful bits that simply must be shared… In November KMA was down to its last penny but, thanks to previous supporters’ belief in what we are doing, we were able to continue:

Our deepest thanks to both for helping us in our time of need

received our first grant from National Government of R75 000 in December 2009. This is a big milestone for us, not only in terms of much needed funding but also as a show of commitment from Government. Many thanks to Lindi Ngcobo for guiding us through the proposal process and beyond.

Featured Pupil Denecia Muller Denecia is one of KMA’s “oldest” pupils, having joined us in July 2007 for cello lessons. She was also our first sponsored pupil and was supported through her lessons for 3 years by Lois and Craig Strachan of Lakeside, Cape Town. Denecia truly loves music and takes the opportunity whenever she can to learn a new instrument. Through the wonderful efforts of volunteers in her

She loves singing also, and is a member of her church choir and the KMA Youth Choir and plays cello in the KMA Chamber Orchestra. “My dream is to one day play in a real orchestra,” she says. Denecia is in grade 11 at the Hout Bay Secondary School in Hangberg. We are so proud of

So what else have we been up to so far this year…? In March Director Dwyn Griesel again braved the Cape Town winds to take part in the 2010 Argus Cycle Race. Unlike last year, the winds only got up to 55km, Chapmans Peak remained open and Dwyn was

able to make it to the finish line, 108 km later. Aching legs, feet, buttocks, arms, hands, neck and shoulders were the worst of it, but all worth it as sponsorship for this race brought KMA over R25 000! Thanks to Dot Canham who every year, faithfully stands on the side of the road waiting with a Red Bull or two as her daughter skids in for a pick-me-up before the dreaded Chappies and Suikerbossie inclines…! Our gratitude

Later on in the year the jazz band went on to perform Brasilian melodies at Darlene’s birthday party – on the night of the Brasil vs Ivory Coast soccer match and, as a result, Brasil won! ☺

Intended to inform the locals about the good community efforts taking place in Hout Bay, the expo also served as a bridge between those organisations in need and those who have the time, resources or skills to assist. The KMA Jazz Band thrilled the crowd with their lively blues and funk and went on to perform

With Many Thanks To‌.‌ all those who support KMA and continue to see the potential of a growing musical environment in Hout Bay.

To date we would not have been able to survive without the support of companies and individuals locally and internationally, but in order for KMA to continue to expand and be a valuable contributor to society we need increased sponsorship... As we continue to grow, our vision is to create a building for Hout Bay containing everything from practise rooms and recording facilities to a versatile performance space. For this we need the assistance of the Hout Bay community and those with diverse skills. If you are interested in being part of this vision, please contact the KMA office.
