MISSION 1: Nuclear Nearth

AN ENGLISH WORKBOOK For senior primary school readers: 10 year old Rynn faces the biggest challenge of his life when a little alien recruits him to help on his mission: to prevent an event on earth that would lead to planetary disaster of galactic proportions. Their only weapons are the social media, Internet games and other web forums that are second home to Rynn and his friends. Will this be enough to beat the sinister beings that inhabit the dark parallel dimension of Nearth?

Name: ………………………………… Grade: ……………………………….

CONTENTS OF YOUR WORKBOOK This workbook has been designed to test and encourage reading, speaking, comprehension as well as self-driven research. Focus is on the story behind the book but also on the subject matters the book incorporates including environmental issues, knowledge of our galaxy and the theme of connectivity! THE THEME OF CONNECTIVITY One of the key themes of the book is that of “connectivity”. Connectivity can mean lots of different things. Use the following as references in the book and discuss in class how connectivity is a part of our everyday life on both a physical level and a nonphysical level. Page 85: A physical connection can cause an explosion. How does this happen? Page 99: A modern form of connectivity is the Internet. What about cell phones? Consider also multiplayer games where everyone plays live via the Internet? What does this connectivity say about our world? Page 115: Discuss the connections between planet earth and the other planets in our galaxy. HOW are we connected? Page 124: Persuading the schools to connect and sign up for the website Page 223: What sort of special connection lies between Rynn and Jazzpaw?

Here are three different projects for you and your class to do that will allow you to explore the theme of “connectivity”.

PROJECT 1: ART How did people connect with each other and communicate before the Internet was invented? How would life have been with no websites, no cell phones, no email and certainly no text messaging?! Design a poster showing “The Evolution of Human Communication”. Show communication and connectivity as it (a) used to be, (b) as it is now and (c) as you think it might be in the future. Combine what you know (facts) with what is possible (use your imagination).

THE THEME OF CONNECTIVITY contd… PROJECT 2: PERFORMING ARTS: The feeling of being connected to something or someone is important to most human beings. Turn this thought into a performing art piece. Choose whatever medium best expresses your feelings about connectivity. Here are some ideas:

Create a dance

Design and perform a mime piece

Choose and play a piece of music that you think best conveys connectivity.

Write and perform a skit or drama piece that presents an interpretation of the theme.

MY NOTES: ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

PROJECT 3: ORAL PRESENTATION: Pick one aspect of connectivity and prepare an oral on how that connectivity plays a role in your life. You could pick something physical (such as the Internet) or something not physical (such as a relationship between you and your dog or between you and a member of your family or a friend). Answer the questions:

Why is this connection important?

What would your life be like if this wasn’t possible?

SOCIAL MEDIA – A GROUP PROJECT TO DO IN CLASS “Social media” refers to the way people use e-mail, text messaging on cell phones, social websites such as Facebook, Twitter and other digital media in order to communicate with each other. Your parent’s generation would have grown up without any of these. Communication would have been dependent on people being in the same room or on the writing and posting of letters. Jazzpaw and Rynn used social media to reach the kids of the world. (Refer to pages 96, 98 and 243). Divide into groups. Pretend you have “something big” that requires communication with other children around the world. • Identify what your message is. • Give the idea or project a name. • Now answer the following: 1. Which social media will work best for us are: (be sure you know why!)

2. What activities would you do for each different form of social media. Be creative. Have fun with your ideas. TAKE ACTION! – Let’s Do a Business Planning Session On Jazzpaw’s request, Rynn and his friends signed up for their school “Green Club” that focused on environmental matters. Jazzpaw needed them to join as a cover for the big mission but he also wanted them to become aware of what was happening on their own part of the planet.

DO A BUSINESS PLAN: A good approach to any business plan is to list things under “WHY?”, “WHAT?”, “WHEN”, “WHO?” and “HOW”. MATERIALS YOUR TEACHER WILL NEED: Large flipchart paper or board, small pieces of paper (preferably sticky) so you can stick them up onto the charts as you work, thick felt-tip pens.

1. As a group, discuss what kind of club you could invent that would make a difference to our planet, or just to your own part of that planet. It could focus on one issue or a few different issues. This is the “WHY”. 2. Each one of you write down three important objectives you want for your club. Have your teacher read them all out loud. Group them into similar subjects as you go. By linking and grouping the ideas, you should be able to whittle them down into three or four broad objectives. This is “WHAT”.

4. Divide into small teams. Discuss and write down as many creative and practical ideas of what your new club can do. There is no such thing as a silly or wrong idea! 5. Appoint one person to share your team’s ideas with the whole class. 6. Agree as a class which ideas to turn into action. This is all about “HOW”. 7. You’ll probably need some help from teachers, parents, other adults or even organisations. Write those down. The “WHO”. 8. Now write up some sensible deadlines for the first round of activities and agree on who is going to do what. This is “WHEN” and some more “WHO”. 9. Now get out there and do it! Well done! You have just experienced a real-life business planning session! Remember the WHY-WHAT-WHENWHO-HOW thinking for future projects. It helps you to plan! Don’t forget to write to Jazzpaw and Rynn at www.kidzSerious.com and share what you are doing!

MORE ON THE THEME OF CONNECTIVITY Q1: “TRAPPED”! In chapters 19 and 20, we read how Rynn is trapped by the evil Brogens in a “dimension trap”. Read the pages again and find 5 adjectives that make you realise how scary it was for Rynn. Remember we are looking for words that make you feel like you know how disconnected and frightened he was feeling.

1) ……………………………………………………………………….. 2) ………………….…………………………………………………… 3) …….…………………………………………………………………. 4) ……..………………………………………………………………. 5) ………………………………………………………………………..

Q2: STORY WRITING! Rynn was always “connected” to his friends. When he was held captive in the dimension trap by the Brogens, it was quite the opposite. He could not communicate with anybody. He was very much alone. No matter how hard he tried to shout at everybody he could see, nobody noticed him. He was completely disconnected. In real life, there are many children who might feel trapped by something or someone. Can you imagine what it would feel like to be held captive in a place where you can’t reach your family or friends? Where you are completely disconnected? Write an essay called “Trapped”. Use your imagination. It can be any sort of situation where you or your characters find themselves trapped. Be sure to describe what it feels like in your story.

Q3: Adjectives and descriptive words go a long way to making a reader feel what is happening in the storyline. Now it’s your turn to write! Look at the following sentences and think of an adjective that suggests a certain mood or emotion. 1) I screamed as I fell into the ……………………….…. well. 2) I ran forward, feeling the …………………….… wind beating against my face. 3) I could see my friend standing in the middle of the …………………………… crowd. 4) The ……………………………………. animal was getting closer and closer to me. 5) Shaking, I looked down at all the …………………………………… faces. MISSION 1: Nuclear Nearth

Jazzpaw & Rynn: The Book, The Series QUICK STORYLINE: JAZZPAW & RYNN MISSION 1: NUCLEAR NEARTH Rynn is just a regular boy in Grade 5. Then one day, something happened that changed his life and the way he saw his planet dramatically. That “something” arrived in the form of a funny-looking dog called Jazzpaw. Suddenly Rynn needed all of his friends and a whole lot of kids beyond that, when he found himself unexpectedly recruited for a mission of galactic importance under the leadership of a little alien who didn’t quite fit the mould of acceptable extraterrestrial visitors.

AUTHOR’S MESSAGE TO YOU! What do you think Jazzpaw and Rynn should take on as their next mission? It has to be something that the “kidzSerious” of today find important. It has to be an issue connected to the way we live our lives here on earth. It could be about something we need to stop or something we need to do more of. What do YOU think is important enough for Rynn and his friends to take on as a mission? What do YOU think would have so much impact on the rest of our galaxy that a worried little alien (disguised as a silly looking dog) feels the need to come to earth in order to help sort things out … before its too late? I would love to hear your ideas and opinions! Please email me on wkcoetzee@gmail.com. Or send me your ideas via the KidzSerious website on www.kidzSerious.com. Thank you for reading Jazzpaw and Rynn!
