DESIGN STATEMENT

Architecture is not only the career I chose, it is also my lifestyle. Architecture is my way of life, a response to the appreciation of art and culture, and the influence to my behavior. Architecture is not only what I work on, it is what I love to do. In this journey my responsibility is to discover how as an architect I could make a difference in society by designing spaces that are functional enhancing quality of life. Understanding the importance of how architecture can change people’s behavior is my priority to be able to make better environments where people can be around each other with a better social comportment.

LOFT VILLA INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO 1 FALL 2009 PROFESSOR RIADY

DESIGN CONCEPT

The emphasis of this studio was on creating smallscale environment based on the interaction of the individual with the environment. I was giving a basic space where two of the wall were fixed. In this space is was required to create a space with a direct relation to a site and a client needs. After chosen a site and conducting a site analysis as well as a client analysis, I designed a multilevel loft with a exterior space. All the design was inspired on a painting and a song of our preference.

Godiva Chocolatier Stores. The company was looking for a new design image . The space was all inspired by the feeling of luxury that Godiva offers as well as in the chocolate itself.

The Parti is based on the geometry of the diamond. Lines were pulled out of the center to crate a radial composition. The different angles from the diamond cut were used to give shape to the angular form. The combination between the chocolate box and the truffle shape created a theme.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

In the design is important to emphasize the experience in the process involve in making the chocolate. The luxury involve in the branding is important to maintain the image of the Godiva store. The display units are a key element to show the different products that Godiva has to offer. The “Theatre area must be located where everyone could see it to make it an important selling factor. The overall experience must be unique, rich, and it has to make people feel special. The seating area should be cozy for people to enjoy the different beverages that Godiva boutiques offer. It is key to create and environment that has texture, modern, and luxury.

TRANSITION VOID

The commercial areas in downtown Savannah have seen an increasing number of vacant retail spaces where pockets of valuable land remain unused, eroding the democracy of public spaces. In this context, the corrosive effects of the void have started to negatively influence the quality of public life. In order to reconstruct and enhance the democracy of public space, the creation of a new space opens up the ways of how people circulate in the area and it directly frames the view toward Telfair Square. Deeply secluded between two buildings, the space inventively continues the urban fabric on the Broughton Street.

SOCIAL VOID

Arguably one of the most corrosive elements of the Savannah’s urban environment, the parking lots, frequently remain underdeveloped and therefore cannot accommodate diverse public activities. The vast parking lots minimize and limit the public social exchanges in and around that space. Moreover, the problems with vacant land drag the real estate value of neighborhood down. The reconstruction requires the infrastructure actions in which the parking would be moved underground, simultaneously offering the public the great use of open uninterrupted space. This analysis was based on a ten year observation.

CURRENT

The newly forged

functions take place in the urban tissue; each one of them with its scale and its function tries to redefine the urban void and to reinsert “the flux” of the city in it.

COMMUNITY VOIDS

The residential districts in Savannah are similarly prone to negative effects of the corrosive sprawl of voids. The pockets of vacant land are discontinuing the quality of the residents lives. In order to create a stronger community and

the proposed an urban garden. The

garden would provide the highly needed food resources for the houses in its close proximity. By building greenhouses in these vacant lots, we can produce food for the community and generate energy. This prototype would serve as an indicator for other residential areas to follow, eventually creating an organic food network throughout the city. This would minimize the need

CURRENT

to travel, and maximize the health of its residents. Urban space might then be reconsidered in terms of a network of hierarchically organized voids that are adaptive to variable needs and circumstances, while serving as a catalyst for

social and programmatic diversification.

SAN FRANCISCO HOME OF THE START UPS

San Francisco has become the new destination for Startup companies from around the United States. Many neighborhoods around Warfield Theater and Market Street experienced throughout the years a significant urban decay that had leaded the area to high vacancy real estate. However, in recent years, many Startups companies due to the limited availability of office spaces in Menlo Park and Palo Alto have moved to San Francisco looking for a city experience. In addition, the new Transbay System redevelopment plans to transform the area, making this site prime real estate.

The building massing design was driven by the idea of maximizing daylight, views, and natural ventilation into the building. The main structural design concept was inspired by the idea of folding paper and triangulating plates to create diagonal member that function as a diagrid system to support the building from the facade, with the help of a columned system. The folding plates along with the diagonal members wrap the building maximizing lateral support and the high seismic conditions in San Francisco.
