DONATING YOUR MEDAL GOES A LONG WAY At Qhubeka we believe that when we give bicycles to people who earned them, we are not just giving them a means of transportation but the gift of hope. This is one of reasons we chose the name “Qhubeka”, an Nguni (Zulu, Xhosa) word that means “to carry on”, “to progress” or “to move forward”. As World Bicycle Relief’s programme in South Africa, we believe in giving a hand-up not a hand-out. This is why we help people progress by giving bicycles in return for work done to improve communities, the environment or academic results.

If you demand 100% from your beer, choose

*based on Bavaria 0.0% Regular Malt

Bavaria 0.0% is brewed naturally, but with a unique, patented process creating no alcohol at all from the get go. It’s a genuine 0.0% alcohol malt drink and a flavour taste sensation! The claim ‘non-alcoholic’ or ‘alcohol free’ is often a misnomer. How can any beer with up to 0.5% alcohol content claim to be non-alcoholic? Most ‘alcohol-free’ beers are brewed as normal alcoholic beers, with the alcohol extracted at the last stage. Is it possible to remove all of the alcohol? No ways! These beers can have up to 0.5% alcohol by volume remaining when they reach the shelf. But by law it’s still ‘alcohol-free’? Who’s kidding who? ‘Alcohol-free’ should mean zero alcohol, nothing, nada, zip! Zero alcohol for Bavaria means Halaal too! Looking to reduce your waistline? Bavaria 0.0% uses only the purest mineral water, barley malt, wheat, and hops and has only 25Kcal, 6g carbohydrates (of which sugar 3.1g), 0.2g protein, and 0g fat per 100ml. It’s good for the figure and your confidence gets a kick! Bavaria 0.0% also has isotonic values and contains 68% less sugar and 41% less calories than the average soft drink or fruit juice. WOW!* We’ve sacrificed none of the flavour to bring you Bavaria 0.0% – you’ll love its malty, smooth, refreshing taste! And if you like your alcohol-free experience with a twist, Bavaria 0.0% is available in the following natural flavour taste sensations: Regular Malt, Raspberry, Lemon, Apple, Peach, Pomegranate and Pineapple. Enjoy!

MTN NATIONAL MTB SERIES #8 RIDE CRATER CRUISE 13th & 14th September 2014 Driven by NISSAN Ride Arena, Parys, Free State, South Africa 1422m Above Sea Level 2000+ Sat 06h30-08h00 & 11h00-15h30 | Sun 06h30-08h30 13km | 23km | 45km | 80km | 115km

Parys is a town situated on the banks of the Vaal River in the Free State province of South Africa. The name was given by a German surveyor named Schilbach who had participated in the Siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War and the location next to the Vaal reminded him of Paris on the River Seine. The farm Klipspruit, on the Vaal River, which was owned by four van Coller brothers, was laid out with the first erven in 1876, and the little town of Parys was born. The Vredefort structure is currently described as the World’s oldest and largest impact structure. The structure was formed many, many years ago when an asteroid of 10 kilometers in diameter collided with the earth at a speed of 30 000km/h. The Vredefort Dome is South Africa’s 7th World Heritage Site, declared in July 2005 and the only one in the world where 99% of the land is private property. The Vaal River is the oldest river in the world though not nearly as old as the crater. The town acquired a reputation as an arts and antique hub. Many well-known artists, antique dealers and craftsmen have made Parys their home. A great variety of mountain biking trails are found in the Vaal River valley, in the farmlands to the south of Parys and along the heights of the Dome Bergland.

HISTORY & WINNERS Photo Credit: ZoonCronje.com NIKON

The Ride Crater Cruise leg of the MTN National MTB Series driven by Nissan is owned by the Koekemoer family. The race first became part of the MTN NATIONAL MTB SERIES in 2005 until 2007. The event was re-introduced in 2010. Perhaps the most memorable moment was in 2005 when the leaders came across a closed gate, this brought the race together again, but with only a handful of kilometres to the finish, it was decided to award five first places! In 2008 Yolandi du Toit was seriously injured in a freak accident when an Impala jumped straight into her, she recovered and returned to win the event the following year. The routes makes use of only some of the mountain biking trails in the Vaal River valley and farmlands to the south of Parys and along the heights of the Dome Bergland. Thanks to all the land owners and families along the Vaal, without them the race will not be possible. The event supports local business and the local community.

ROUTE & FEATURES Photo Credit: ZoonCronje.com NIKON

NISSAN NATIONAL MTB SERIES Half-Marathon The first 3.5km is tarmac and relatively flat. Thereafter it goes over to a rather open undulating dirt road into farmland. At the river crossing, just past halfway riders reach the lowest point of the course 1373m. From there it is a uphill that finish with a quad trail at 21.5km to test you strength, That will bring riders to the main USN water station at 22.5km. The main Sorrie-berg climb peaks at 24.5km. The last 15km beyond the Sorrie-berg climb is partly on the side of a railroad following onto the road around Schonkenville entering an undulating singletrack section towards the water tower (highest point on route 1452) leading onto the single track trough the bluegum forest until you reach Petit Paris. MTN NATIONAL MTB SERIES Marathon The route follows the same route as the Half-Marathon until the river crossing. From there it is right, underneath the tar road on dual tracks and unto a 1.4km piece of tar before turning left onto farm roads for 17.2km heading to the halfway mark at Schoemansdrift where the Marathon joins the Ultra route. MTN NATIONAL MTB SERIES Ultra Marathon First 5.5km is tarmac and relatively flat. A new section of challenging single and dual track over granite hills will cut riders across to the river-edge district road called the Koedoeslaagte road. Thereafter a rural dirt road with a 2km piece of dual & single track cutting though the Koedoeslaagte. Followed by 5km of district road past Venterskroon. Now for the new technical and challenging 10km section in the kloof that makes this event a true ultra marathon. We join the district road just ahead of Venterskroon and climb up Suikerbossie with a concrete dual-track leading onto the Suikerbos Nature reserve. This path will lead us though farmland and the Espach’s game farm. From the winding dual-tracks of the game reserve riders join onto the winding dirt road that leads to the half-way mark at Schoemansdrift. 3km from Schoemansdrif we leave the district road. We will enter the farm Baskop starting with a fast downhill singletrack called Rooikappie se woud. For the next 20km riders will deal with dual-track and mainly single track along the river. From Hakuna Matata riders will be challenged with a partly corrugated dirt road and a few longish drags. At the next waterpoint (103km), the route leaves all the “nice” roads and continues on farm tracks. The last 12km, is partly on the side of a railroad following onto the single track trough the bluegum forest until you reach Petit Paris. A new 1km quad trail at Outlaws will be a pre-final challenge before crossing the rock plate climb called Sorry-berg. NATIONALMTBSERIES.COM 16.

Are you part of SAS? SASeeding (SAS) is an exciting race administration system aimed at improving the standard of cycling events. Upon registering with SAS each cyclist receives a permanent and unique SAS number; which also doubles as a race number and timing chip. SAS gathers race results from various race organisers and uses these to create a race index. This enables SAS to divide large numbers into smaller batches in accordance with a riders ability which effectively eliminates congestion. Riders are provided with a more enjoyable and safer riding experience.
