Hilton EVENT SUMMARY

DONATING YOUR MEDAL GOES A LONG WAY At Qhubeka we believe that when we give bicycles to people who earned them, we are not just giving them a means of transportation but the gift of hope. This is one of reasons we chose the name “Qhubeka”, an Nguni (Zulu, Xhosa) word that means “to carry on”, “to progress” or “to move forward”. As World Bicycle Relief’s programme in South Africa, we believe in giving a hand-up not a hand-out. This is why we help people progress by giving bicycles in return for work done to improve communities, the environment or academic results.

Welcome to the seventh leg of the 2014 “MTN National Mountain Bike Series driven by Nissan” this weekend in Hilton As the proud title sponsor of the “MTN National MTB Series driven by Nissan”, which has grown immensely in support and popularity over the past four years, we look forward to bringing you another weekend of gruelling yet thrilling riding in the mountains of picturesque Hilton. MTN remains actively involved in amateur and professional cycling on a national level across mountain biking and road cycling. MTN is a responsible corporate citizen and in line with our vision for cycling to leave a lasting legacy, MTN formed a partnership with Qhubeka. This initiative uplifts rural communities and more importantly the youth within those communities to enable children to get to school in time and return home with enough time to study and do their homework. Attendance at school also sees a marked improvement. Your unselfish decision to exchange your medal for a donation to the MTN Qhubeka programme will assist us in achieving these objectives. Kindly take some time to visit www.qhubeka.org to find out more about this worthy CSI initiative.

If you demand 100% from your beer, choose

*based on Bavaria 0.0% Regular Malt

Bavaria 0.0% is brewed naturally, but with a unique, patented process creating no alcohol at all from the get go. It’s a genuine 0.0% alcohol malt drink and a flavour taste sensation! The claim ‘non-alcoholic’ or ‘alcohol free’ is often a misnomer. How can any beer with up to 0.5% alcohol content claim to be non-alcoholic? Most ‘alcohol-free’ beers are brewed as normal alcoholic beers, with the alcohol extracted at the last stage. Is it possible to remove all of the alcohol? No ways! These beers can have up to 0.5% alcohol by volume remaining when they reach the shelf. But by law it’s still ‘alcohol-free’? Who’s kidding who? ‘Alcohol-free’ should mean zero alcohol, nothing, nada, zip! Zero alcohol for Bavaria means Halaal too! Looking to reduce your waistline? Bavaria 0.0% uses only the purest mineral water, barley malt, wheat, and hops and has only 25Kcal, 6g carbohydrates (of which sugar 3.1g), 0.2g protein, and 0g fat per 100ml. It’s good for the figure and your confidence gets a kick! Bavaria 0.0% also has isotonic values and contains 68% less sugar and 41% less calories than the average soft drink or fruit juice. WOW!* We’ve sacrificed none of the flavour to bring you Bavaria 0.0% – you’ll love its malty, smooth, refreshing taste! And if you like your alcohol-free experience with a twist, Bavaria 0.0% is available in the following natural flavour taste sensations: Regular Malt, Raspberry, Lemon, Apple, Peach, Pomegranate and Pineapple. Enjoy!

LEG NUMBER DATE VENUE ELEVATION PARTICIPANTS REGISTRATION DISTANCES

MTN NATIONAL MTB SERIES #7 HILTON Driven by NISSAN Sunday 22nd June 2014 Hilton College, Hilton, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa 1122m Above Sea Level +-1000 Sat 16h00-19h00 | Sun 06h30-09h00 10km | 20km | 40km | 75km | 110km

The distinctly English country village of Hilton with its attractive sense of history lies on the brow of the escarpment, only 10 kilometres above Pietermaritzburg, at the start of the Midlands Meander. Hiltons beginnings originated in the purchase of a large portion of the farm Ongegund in 1857 by Joseph Henderson, whose wife called their farm ‘Hilton’. Hilton is a good five degrees cooler than Pietermaritzburg, and it is this access to fresh air, coupled with first sightings of the Drakensberg, that lures people to Hilton. The town may now be home to 10 000 residents, but it manages to retain its village feel, right down to its meagre adherence to traffic control with only two traffic lights, and some distinct examples of Tudor-style architecture. In 1872 the Reverend WO Newnham opened Hilton College here, one of South Africa’s leading private schools. This routes boasts scenic views over the Umgeni valley and the Albert-Falls Dam. Enjoy the great hand built trails around the Hilton College area.

Notice to all participants Although the organizers endeavour to remove dangerous rocks and cut as much of the long grass and overhanging bushes, trees, thorns and vegetation as possible before the event, weather conditions sometimes result in certain unforeseen obstacles on the route. It is the rider’s responsibility to avoid these hazards by riding carefully where required. Please remember to ride with your phone. NATIONALMTBSERIES.COM 10.

HISTORY & WINNERS

The Hilton leg of the MTN National MTB Series driven by Nissan is owned by ADVENDURANCE. The race became part of the MTN NATIONAL MTB SERIES in 2009, where it was first held at the Grace College. It was moved to Hilton College in 2011 which served as a better start finish venue for the event. In 2009 the Ultra distance was shortened by the Commissaires due to extreme weather conditions, with temperatures of over 40 degrees being measured in the valley. The routes makes use of some of the existing trails around the Hilton College that has been created in the past by many of the local trail builders. Thanks to Mt. Verde and the Reserve, without them the routes will not be as unique as what riders have come to expect and experience at the MTN Hilton event. Special thanks to Hilton College for the start and finish venue. Year 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013

ROUTE & FEATURES Photo Credit: ZoonCronje.com NIKON

The NISSAN Half-Marathon route moves in a clock-wise direction with an over abundance of single track and hand built trails, specially created for mountain bikers. Heading out riders are met early on with a quick downhill to the foot of the first challenging climb of the day to the first water point, at the top just after the water point is the highest point on the route. This is where the fun starts, with 5.5km of mostly downhill! At the bottom the route starts a long steady climb to Grace College. From here, riders will be rewarded with some fast downhills and flowing dual tracks. The route has a nice balance between single track sections and duel track. The “Race Snakes” will find challenging sections to test technical skills, while the steady climbs and fast down hills will test both fitness and courage. The MTN Marathon starts off with the same route as the 40km until the just after the first water point, where the 75km will do an additional lap. The route consists mostly of duel track with sporadic singletrack sections. Riders will descend approximately 10km down the escarpment into the Umgeni Valley, lying 300m below. After entering the reserve the riders will be met with a challenging long steep climb of approximately 8km of continuous climbing, snaking it’s way out of the valley to Mt. Verde. The route will be reversed for 2014, from 2013. The MTN Ultra marathon holds true to form and is definitely not for sissies. This year sees the riders do the Mt. Verde section twice but in reverse! The route is aimed at providing fit, competent and professional riders with an opportunity to compete over mountainous terrain, with lots of technical ascents and descents, with extended sections of single track to test their skills. Fit and skilled recreational riders will find the climbs and some of the rocky, rutted surfaces very challenging. Novices are discouraged from participating in the Ultra marathon. Where the surfaces and descents are dangerous it is recommended that riders be overly cautious and alert to a change in riding surfaces.

Are you part of SAS? SASeeding (SAS) is an exciting race administration system aimed at improving the standard of cycling events. Upon registering with SAS each cyclist receives a permanent and unique SAS number; which also doubles as a race number and timing chip. SAS gathers race results from various race organisers and uses these to create a race index. This enables SAS to divide large numbers into smaller batches in accordance with a riders ability which effectively eliminates congestion. Riders are provided with a more enjoyable and safer riding experience. SAS recently started the first MTB ranking system in conjunction with KIA, so riders can now view their national ranking on www.kiarankings.co.za
