DONATING YOUR MEDAL GOES A LONG WAY At Qhubeka we believe that when we give bicycles to people who earned them, we are not just giving them a means of transportation but the gift of hope. This is one of reasons we chose the name “Qhubeka”, an Nguni (Zulu, Xhosa) word that means “to carry on”, “to progress” or “to move forward”. As World Bicycle Relief’s programme in South Africa, we believe in giving a hand-up not a hand-out. This is why we help people progress by giving bicycles in return for work done to improve communities, the environment or academic results.

If you demand 100% from your beer, choose

*based on Bavaria 0.0% Regular Malt

Bavaria 0.0% is brewed naturally, but with a unique, patented process creating no alcohol at all from the get go. It’s a genuine 0.0% alcohol malt drink and a flavour taste sensation! The claim ‘non-alcoholic’ or ‘alcohol free’ is often a misnomer. How can any beer with up to 0.5% alcohol content claim to be non-alcoholic? Most ‘alcohol-free’ beers are brewed as normal alcoholic beers, with the alcohol extracted at the last stage. Is it possible to remove all of the alcohol? No ways! These beers can have up to 0.5% alcohol by volume remaining when they reach the shelf. But by law it’s still ‘alcohol-free’? Who’s kidding who? ‘Alcohol-free’ should mean zero alcohol, nothing, nada, zip! Zero alcohol for Bavaria means Halaal too! Looking to reduce your waistline? Bavaria 0.0% uses only the purest mineral water, barley malt, wheat, and hops and has only 25Kcal, 6g carbohydrates (of which sugar 3.1g), 0.2g protein, and 0g fat per 100ml. It’s good for the figure and your confidence gets a kick! Bavaria 0.0% also has isotonic values and contains 68% less sugar and 41% less calories than the average soft drink or fruit juice. WOW!* We’ve sacrificed none of the flavour to bring you Bavaria 0.0% – you’ll love its malty, smooth, refreshing taste! And if you like your alcohol-free experience with a twist, Bavaria 0.0% is available in the following natural flavour taste sensations: Regular Malt, Raspberry, Lemon, Apple, Peach, Pomegranate and Pineapple. Enjoy!

PURE PERFORMANCE, NATURALLY. CLEAN, CLEAR & POTENT. PERFORMANCE ENERGY AND REHYDRATION DRINK LOADED WITH PERFORMANCE NUTRIENTS: 3-STAGE GLYCOMATRIX CARB SYSTEM, L-GLUTAMINE, PHOSPHATES & ELECTROLYTES.

Durbanville was founded in the early 19th century around a fresh water spring and was primarily a watering station for travellers between Cape Town and the interior. Durbanville was originally known as Pampoenkraal (from the Afrikaans words pampoen meaning pumpkin, and kraal meaning corral - an enclosure for livestock).During 1836 the inhabitants of Pampoenkraal petitioned the Governor of the Cape Colony, Sir Benjamin d’Urban, for permission to rename the village D’Urban in his honour. Permission was duly granted and the new name persisted until 1886 when it was renamed to Durbanville in order to avoid confusion with Durban. Meerendal, situated in Durbanville just 20 kilometres from Cape Town, is one of the oldest wine estates in South Africa. The unique location and terroir of Meerendal, in one of the coolest wine regions in the Western Cape close to the Atlantic Ocean, is ideal for the variety of noble cultivars that have been planted; Shiraz, Pinotage, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Meerendal is proud to treasure one of the oldest vineyards of Pinotage bush vines in South Africa that were planted in 1955 and produces a limited number of bottles from this Heritage Block. Meerendal has scooped up many top wine awards over the past five years and is exporting its quality wine to more than 12 countries. The estate first held a Cape Epic prologue in 2012 and has since strengthened it’s mountain biking offering with club memberships and have expanded it’s trails built by Bennet Nel and is owned by Meerendal Multisport. The Meerendal leg forms part of the Tygerberg Mountain Bike Club trail network. NATIONALMTBSERIES.COM

History & Winners

The Meerendal leg of the Ashburton Investments National MTB Series is owned by Advendurance. The idea of moving the Tulbagh leg closer to Cape Town have been with us for about two years but finding the correct venue was a tall order. That was until Advendurance met with Matthew Zoutendyk from Meerendal Wine Estate at the 2014 Cape Epic where seed was planted. The trails on Meerendal Wine Estate have been built by Bennet Nel over the last four years and is owned by Meerendal Multisport. Two of arguably the favourite trails is the staircase to heaven and the Burry Stander tribute trail. The event makes use of some of the mountain biking trails on the neighbouring farms like Bloemendal, Hillcrest, Contemanskloof and Hoogekraal which form part of the Tygerberg Mountain Bike Club trail network. Some of the trails are unique to the event and the properties have exclusively agreed access to some wonderful and private areas. Special thanks to Meerendal Wine Estate and all of the landowners, without them the race will not be possible. The event supports local business and the local community.

Route & Features

Half-Marathon The route follows the lower lying routes on Meerendal for approximately 5km before crossing the road, with a slight drag towards the vineyards on rolling land. After entering a reserve riders will be greeted with game as they work their way towards the first climb of the day at around 9km, just three kilometres long it will enviably show who is here to race! After the climb the route enters some more wine lands over undulations before hitting the next proper climb at 21km. This is where the men from the boys will be separated, at just over 2km and on cement, the elastic will snap here and a couple “climbers” will getaway. After water point two, the route goes up to the tower and then down onto single track into Contermanskloof past the last water point and climb back out and back to Meerendal for the finish. After water point two, the route turns back down onto the first set of single track into Hillcrest after which the route climbs back up (4.4km) past the reservoir up to klip rug. An incredible fast but rocky 8km of downhill await and then onto Contermanskloof and over the road into Hoogekraal. With some fast flowing track meandering up the mountain, the route takes a quick detour before the dip back down towards the quarry where the hardest obstacle of the day awaits the climb up the back to staircase to heaven in Meerendal and down on the Burry Stander tribute route towards finish. Ultra Marathon The ultra marathon route is a combination of the marathon and the half marathon. NATIONALMTBSERIES.COM

BETTER CHOICES THROUGH SHARED EXPERIENCES

Are you part of SAS? SASeeding (SAS) is an exciting race administration system aimed at improving the standard of cycling events. Upon registering with SAS each cyclist receives a permanent and unique SAS number; which also doubles as a race number and timing chip. SAS gathers race results from various race organisers and uses these to create a race index. This enables SAS to divide large numbers into smaller batches in accordance with a riders ability which effectively eliminates congestion. Riders are provided with a more enjoyable and safer riding experience. SAS recently started the first MTB ranking system in conjunction with KIA, so riders can now view their national ranking on www.kiarankings.co.za
