#7Dullstroom Race Summary
Special Thanks We would like to thank our hosts Dunkeld Country & Equestrian Estate and the people of Dullstroom for welcoming our riders to your special town. We also would like to thank the volunteers helping at our water points, namely the Nelsies girls from Ermelo High School raising money for their hostel Nelstehuis, the local Montessori School & Cambridge Academy in Dullstroom and Zest Property Group - you are what makes our races extra special for our entrants.. In order to create an amazing route and experience, we are very reliant on private land owners allowing us to ride through their property. We would like to extend our gratitude to the following landowners: Abraham Meyer, Lost Valley Estate, Trevor Cunningham of Dullstroom Reservations, Gerry Penzhorn, Thys Prinsloo, Santa Estate, Morgenzon, Holingsberg, Anglo American and Jocks Cottages.

Dullstroom is a small town in Mpumalanga province, South Africa, the town lies 35km north of Belfast and some 53 km south-west of Lydenburg. Along with Underberg, it is one of South Africa’s premier fly fishing destinations. The town features the highest railway station in South Africa at 2,077 m above sea level as well as at the foot of De Berg, the highest point in the province at 2,332 m high.
The element stroom, ‘stream’, refers to the Crocodile River nearby. One of the coldest towns in South Africa, Dullstroom is the only place in the country where beech and elm trees grow; they were planted by Dutch colonists.

Dullstroom was established in 1883 by Dutchman Wolterus Dull to settle Dutch immigrants. It was proclaimed on 9 October 1893 and named after a merchant from Amsterdam, Wolterus Dull, chairman of a committee which rendered assistance to families who had suffered losses during the First Anglo-Boer War. During the Second Boer War the town was destroyed and most of the settlers returned to the Netherlands.

The Dullstroom leg of the Ashburton Investments National MTB Series is owned by ADVENDURANCE. The event made it’s debut appearance in 2013 as the “Thin Air challenge”. Exploring much of the area meeting landowners and mountain bikers that were eager that the event continued we added into the 2014 National MTB Series. As a first ever event in the National MTB Series the events popularity completely took us by surprise and drew a staggering 2200 participants. Unfortunately due to heavy rains leading up to the event it became a bit of a mud fest. Since we’ve moved the date to a more suited mid September date where there’s much less rain and it’s still great cool weather for riding. With purposely hand built single track and spectacular views, the race had a 1400 participants last year. The event supports local business and the local community. Ultra marathon Year Men

NATIONALMTBSERIES.COM
Half-marathon The Half-marathon route moves in an clock-wise direction with an abundance of single track with some hand built trails, specially created for this event. Heading out riders are met early on with a steady jeep track climb which then undulates and includes some nice downhill sections to the first water point, from there riders hit the foot of “De Berg” climb. This is where the fun starts! A mix of jeep track, cattle paths and purpose built single tracks awaits the riders, on a mostly downhill trail with short power climbs in between. At the bottom the route splits and the 45km will turn back. Riders will be rewarded with some more fast jeep track and sporadic singletrack sections down to the railway line. The route has a nice balance between single track sections and jeep track. The “Race Snakes” will find challenging sections to test technical skills, while the sharp climbs and steep down hills will test both fitness and courage. Marathon The Marathon starts off with the same route as the 45km until the bottom of “Carpe Diem” where the 75km will split from the route. The route continues down to the railway but takes a sharp left where the riders will be immediately met with “Cobra Climb” which is mostly made up of jeep track. At the top, with burning lungs due to the high altitude riders suddenly dip into the “Candelabra contour”. This is one of the featured sections of the race and has breathtaking views over the valley below. A short steady climb back up introduces riders to the “runaway train”. This is a ever increasing speedy descent down the valley wall to the railway.
Ultra Marathon The Ultra marathon will be a combination of the Marathon & Ultra routes.

The next section flows along the railway and is a long steady descent, the ideal time to recover from the proper mountain biking that’s just been experienced. Crossing the spruit almost 17km of down-hilling later signals the start of the main climb of the day an 11km steady climb to the king of the mountain. From the top fast undulating jeep tracks and brick roads are met by the riders taking them back to the finish.

If you demand 100% from your beer, choose
*based on Bavaria 0.0% Regular Malt
Bavaria 0.0% is brewed naturally, but with a unique, patented process creating no alcohol at all from the get go. It’s a genuine 0.0% alcohol malt drink and a flavour taste sensation! The claim ‘non-alcoholic’ or ‘alcohol free’ is often a misnomer. How can any beer with up to 0.5% alcohol content claim to be non-alcoholic? Most ‘alcohol-free’ beers are brewed as normal alcoholic beers, with the alcohol extracted at the last stage. Is it possible to remove all of the alcohol? No ways! These beers can have up to 0.5% alcohol by volume remaining when they reach the shelf. But by law it’s still ‘alcohol-free’? Who’s kidding who? ‘Alcohol-free’ should mean zero alcohol, nothing, nada, zip! Zero alcohol for Bavaria means Halaal too! Looking to reduce your waistline? Bavaria 0.0% uses only the purest mineral water, barley malt, wheat, and hops and has only 25Kcal, 6g carbohydrates (of which sugar 3.1g), 0.2g protein, and 0g fat per 100ml. It’s good for the figure and your confidence gets a kick! Bavaria 0.0% also has isotonic values and contains 68% less sugar and 41% less calories than the average soft drink or fruit juice. WOW!* We’ve sacrificed none of the flavour to bring you Bavaria 0.0% – you’ll love its malty, smooth, refreshing taste! And if you like your alcohol-free experience with a twist, Bavaria 0.0% is available in the following natural flavour taste sensations: Regular Malt, Raspberry, Lemon, Apple, Peach, Pomegranate and Pineapple. Enjoy!

BETTER CHOICES THROUGH SHARED EXPERIENCES
DONATING YOUR MEDAL GOES A LONG WAY At Qhubeka we believe that when we give bicycles to people who earned them, we are not just giving them a means of transportation but the gift of hope. This is one of reasons we chose the name “Qhubeka”, an Nguni (Zulu, Xhosa) word that means “to carry on”, “to progress” or “to move forward”. As World Bicycle Relief’s programme in South Africa, we believe in giving a hand-up not a hand-out. This is why we help people progress by giving bicycles in return for work done to improve communities, the environment or academic results.
